Moto X vs Droid Mini: Active Notifications [video] - Moto X General

Active Notifications on the X and Mini act differently because of the Mini's LCD screen. I posted a short video showing the difference: http://youtu.be/UWZUy_arQf0. I posted same video on Android Central, but thought it might be of interest to folks on here debating between the Vzw X and the Mini.

I returned my Droid maxx on vz to go a family plan att moto maker. I loved the maxx but solo plan was too pricey, on the family plan i dropped my sprint plan, returned the maxx and got a moto x custom on att. To be honest if other carriers offered the moto maker i would have kept my sprint plan, droid maxx was great but not worth the price unless i could get users to share the price. I hope moto gets the nexus 5 and offers the maxx and x at nexus pricing.
imagine the motorola droid maxx battery with kevlar back - on a slightly larger moto x form, 4.9" screen curved kevlar back, i can do without moto maker to get the off contract nexus price structure. I dropped the motorola droid maxx which many people dont realize is motorola droid ultra maxx to not confuse with previous lines. to get the moto x. They have the same specs but i find the smaller phone provides more stable camera use, i miss the extreme 2 day battery use i got on the maxx but like the shared family price on att.

Is the Moto X still worth it?

I have my upgrade this week on Verizon, I've been taking a very serious look at the moto X. Motomaker is one of the coolest things on the scene, as well as some of the moto specific features such as active display. The specs just worry me a tad bit when I put it up against something like a G2 which is in the same price range. Many say the specs on this phone are not a indicator of performance, and I actually like the feeling of the Moto X compared to all the other phones I've tried. So should I just throw my spec worry to the wind?
This phone can easily do anything you want it to do. Hardware specs are not a key decision factor here. It is powerful enough.

Don't focus on the specs! I just left a Note 3 and switched to the Moto X ... Don't regret it one bit!
Tapatalked via my moto x
I just did. Came from the HTC One about a week ago and no regrets! No difference in performance on daily tasks and Active Display is the best new feature I've seen in a long time. I did go with the Developer Edition though.
Maybe read the 20 other similar threads....lots of opinions there that I'm sure many aren't going to repeat again.

Got mine a few days ago. The phone is fantastic. It may have modest hardware, but the stock ROM runs great on it.
Best phone I have owned!

I would stay its still worth it because the price has done down too. Its a great phone and runs fast and smooth but its also a good deal at almost half the price of the other flagships of its generation..
This has been the best device I have purchased in my four years on android phones. I've had the GS4 and HTC one and this phone IMHO performs just as good if not better.
Sent from my XT1056 using Tapatalk
Don't focus on the spec's. Focus on how it performs. My X performs great. Despite having a Samsung Galaxy S4 in my drawer for work that I could stick my personal SIM in and use, I PURCHASED a Moto X Developer Edition for Verizon in early November (two days before the first price drop, when there was no other option to get 32gig X on VZW).
Also keep in mind, if you plan to root, the Moto Maker and retail Verizon Moto X have a locked bootloader which can not be unlocked. While SlapMyMoto 1.0 works to root phones on 4.4, It has a few steps, including flashing older roms first, etc. In reading this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538896&page=69 there are reports that root can survive the 4.4.2 update, but it appears the "write protection disable" provided by MotoWpNoMo doesn't survive. Therefore the Developer Edition Moto X for Verizon, which can have its bootloader unlocked and is quicker/easier to root, might be worth looking at.
I have always been about the latest and greatest smart phone and wanted the best specs. When I got the X, I was skeptical. I am now a true believer in that the greatest specs are not needed. Go for the X.
Mine is arriving tomorrow con UK!!, I'm ****ing excited!!. I bought even know in Lenovo bought Motblablabla!!, I don't care I have MotoG and happy to have it so I don't wanna think tomorrow when I'll get MotoX between my hands on!!

Agree with all previous comments - I'm coming from a HTC ONE X, X+, ONE, and even a Sony Xperia ZL in regards to recent phones and the Moto X for some reason just makes me
The HTC ONE was really good in terms of Android phones and the build quality is still impressive. However, in terms of every day use, snappiness, battery life, integration of core services - the Moto X is nearly perfect (in regards to today's phones). Things can be always improved on any phone (screen if you need text to be razor sharp / camera if you are a vampire that only takes pics at night), but considering all the promos and the decent support from Motorola to keep their customers happy - it's worth taking the risk and seeing if you like it (not to mention you can always return it)!
There is paranoia from people regarding the Lenovo deal - who cares. I'm in the tech industry and will probably have a new phone next year anyways. If the Moto X2 is awesome I'll buy it even if it's owned by Lenovo. If something else is better, then they'll get my business. Who cares - just enjoy what we have now that is awesome...and that awesomeness is the Moto X.
Note: I was not paid by Moto to reply LOL
Buy the Moto X
I bought two Moto X's and can say unequivocally that they are the best phones I've ever had - and I've had cell phones from the very beginning. Don't focus on the specs - focus on the user experience. The size, performance, battery life and feature makes the X a first-rate product.
Plus, building it on MotoMaker is really cool.
I say do it unless you can hold out til the end of Summer for the "X2" lol. I left the N5 for this when I got in on a promo for it over the holidays. This is my favorite Android phone so far and I've had a lot! Nexus S, Galaxy S2, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S3, HTC One, Nexus 5, and probably others I am forgetting lol. The extra features like Active Display, Touchless Controls, and "Drive Mode" are super cool. This phone performs just fine given the "midrange" specs and the fact I customized the colors to my liking makes me like it even more.
I love my moto x and believe that it's worth the money to purchase outright without a contract. With a family of 5, I've had a LOT of "flagship" phones. After receiving my Moto X, I'm thinking about giving my S4 to my 14yr. old son and buying another Moto X for my business line.
I'm debating the moto x too...I might need a new phone cause mine is bricked but i cant help and think a new generation of phones are coming out soon
Best phone I have owned. Very snappy. Love all the extras, like twist to open camera - no more tapping away to get a picture.

It will be enough for me. It'll keep the cost down (hopefully.) I hope that it has active notifications. I'm quite found of that feature. Could live without it if need be. I'm thinking more along the lines of rooting and bootloader unlocking. Likely that won't be possible with the Turbo. If I'm paying outright for a phone it's not gonna be ~$700 and locked down like Fort Knox!

Its officially coming to VZW which is unheard of. I think even though the nexus has a slightly smaller battery, the unlockable BL is enough to boost it over the Turbo.
http://www.droid-life.com/2014/10/1...-t-mobile-sprint-and-us-cellular-in-november/
The 64gb option is nice. I also prefer the Nexus' shape to the Turbo. Droid Turbo will probably be $700 like the Maxx was.
If there was a way to get the moto stuff on the nexus, ie. Touchless and active display, then I'm in, since it is unlocked. If the Turbo can be unlocked then that is the one I go for since I still have an upgrade available. Put this Droid Maxx on eBay because the wife likes her OG Moto X more. That is months down the road, probably something to consider in 6 months when the dust settles. Hopefully by then xposed will run on art and somebody found a way to unlock the bootloader. Until then, this Droid Maxx is a beast of a phone and I'll continue to lurk in the 2014 Moto X forums and secretly laugh at their locked bootloader and a joke for battery life. 3500 mAH baby!!!!

Wow....Early Christmas Gift from Motorola!

I had a nice unexpected surprise this week.
I've using an unlocked Moto G (16 gig) on AT&T for awhile. Started to have problems with the earpiece. Did an advance exchange for another Moto G. Received the Moto G, but come to find out the replacement was not unlocked.
After 2-3 different calls to try to figure out the situation, I received a call from another person in advance exchange. This is a true story, but he said because of the hassle and amount of calls I had to go through, they were shipping me the 2013 32 gig developer edition. I never asked, requested, or even got upset trying to initial just to get them to ship the correct Moto G. Showed up today brand new sealed in the box.
Anyway, pleasantly surprised and now need to snoop around the forums on case recommendations. They sent the white background/black front.
Congrats. The dev version only come in one color, black front and white back as you state.

While I don't mean to sound harsh, this is the Moto X subforum so, why are you posting about the Moto G here? I read that post thinking that because of the hassles you had with Motorola customer service they sent you the 32GB Dev Edition of the Moto X, but... now I don't have any clue whatsoever exactly what you got.
I don't think there exists a 32GB Moto G Developer Edition.

Mods: please close the thread as it appears this should not have been posted here.
Same thing happened to us!
I bought a brand new Moto G ( previous edition) for my dad and after a few days the sim card slot somehow got messed up and wasn't reading the card. So we called, it was covered under warranty and we gave our info for advanced exchange. When we received the package in the mail it turned out to be a Moto X Dev edition.. I was shocked and called them to make sure it wasn't a mistake. ( I didn't want them to charge me extra for it) . Turns out it wasn't a mistake but they just decided to be nice? Not sure why exactly.. Maybe they have extra DEs sitting around or something, or they want to clear inventory. Anyways my dad and I are both happy campers and their excellent customer service has made us customers for life!
Moto has great support. They really take care of people.
Seems like a fitting place to me.
I just purchased this same dev edition model and I am eagerly waiting for it to arrive!
My custom moto x had a ring around the front camera get loose. I was eventually told (after I sent Motorola the phone) that they were unable to make me the same phone and upgraded me to the pure edition 2nd gen.
Moto has the best customer service from what I experienced. ( I have own samsung. lg, htc , etc, all went through RMA before).
Last time my Droid Razr Maxx broke and could not read sim (UICC card). they just gave me an MOTO X developer Edition. ( back in April). I call and offer to paid more to get customization. They just offer me a custom moto x unlock/t-mobile for not extra cost at all!
I could not be more happier. And I convinced my friends and family to try Moto X.
HTC is very quick in RMA but since moto offer me an free moto x, I could only vote for them
Moto is a great company. But I'm afraid what the future holds now that lenovo has bought them. I think lenovo already closed the US plant where they made custom motomaker phones and outsourced those jobs overseas.
Not to downplay moto's kindness.... But watching ebay it seems people have been clearing warehouses of dev editions lately.
I would imagine that it being a dev edition, at this point they are just trying to figure out what to do with the remaining units... Regular moto x carriers will take and give out for free/pennies until remaining stock is gone... But I bet demand for the developer units has dried up SIGNIFICANTLY now that its an old model of what was already a nich phone to begin with.
Nice unexpected upgrade though. Nice to see companies taking care of customers rather then just performing the minimum expectations..

I owned a lot of phones before ( yes , I am a phone-junk). Some are good, some have issues. It just happens. For those which have issues and still under warranty, I would have them RMA.
That is why I have experienced RMA from Samsung, HTC, LG , and moto.
Not all my phones went through RMA, only a few. But I do know all major phone maker RMA procedures
This is why I won't be able to switch to another brand in the foreseeable future, Motorola tries to show they care. My first Android device was an Xperia X10, which was damaged not a month after I bought it (a known device issue) but Sony wouldn't hold up their warranty and left me scorned forever at them. Never again Sony. And now, Motorola has restored my faith in any company, I just love my Moto X.

Why is everyone switching from Droid Turbo to Moto X? I think Droid Turbo is far superior than Moto X 2014 but never used a turbo so I'm not sure.
I guess the major reason is that we dont have root on droid turbo and moto x already got lollipop. I did thought about that too until i tested the droid has way better camera compare to the x

Much better camera and much better battery but from every review I have seen, camera takes a 1 second pause after taking a pic which is not the case with Moto X 2014. I don't care about root personally but camera taking 1 second between pics could be a deal breaker
I dont see any issue, that 1 second pause issue was the hdr, if you turn it off, i dont have issue at all. Also, i guess droid use hdr a lot more than x because of the sensor it use on turbo.

May have to stop by at a Verizon store and switch to Verizon from AT&T then. Hopefully selling X will cover some of the bill that AT&T will send after numbers are ported lol.

Exactly.
Well you had my curiosity now you have my attention. Lets talk business. What exactly do you propose?
If you're giving up the Turbo to get an X on lollipop, you're making a big mistake. Stock X lollipop is horrible. It has terrible memory leaks and stutters worse than any phone I've ever owned, even early model Samsung androids with their proprietary file system that was so bad.
I'm in no rush to get lollipop on my Turbo and I wish could go back to KitKat on my Pure Edition X.

Good luck. Having owned both, the Turbo is "better" in the sense that it has a bigger battery and wireless charging. The rest of the specs are fairly meaningless to me. The Moto X 2014 is a very nice, slim, device with all of the software features. 5.0 is a tad buggy, but not a showstopper for me. So, if you are looking for a lighter and slimmer device with 17 hours of battery life, the Moto X is a great device.

Nexus 6 Mini

So... for most this will be dust in the wind and you won't care or believe...
I heard from a little birdie that a Nexus 6 Mini(aka a smaller moto x branded as nexus) is coming... so wait if you want it smaller.
I hope it's true.:highfive:
I would be all over that!
Where did you read it man.
Found nothing on the internet
I doubt it. That would just be pretty much a google edition of a Moto X 2014.
I bought the Moto X (1 gen) for 3 reasons:
- At the time, it was a Google product, which meant, for regular updates,
- Its size, which perfect for me (and for a lot of people around me, perfect size for a phone)
- its price (300 euros)
The Nexus 5 was too big. The Nexus 6 too too too big and too too too expensive.
A Nexus 6 Mini, with a prize of what Google habit us at beginning... why not..
Only one reason: Active Display( now maybe Moto Display).
So I don't need Nexus6 or CM12.1
And Moto X 2014 is my other choice.
Nexus has to come out with a new phone this year. Any nexus the size of a phone and on Verizon and I am on it.

Right there with you lol :highfive:
I'd be on it in a second. My 2013 Moto X is getting old, and not having Lollipop isn't helping matters.
My GF has the Nexus 6 and it's just simply way too big for my taste. If they made one closer to the size of the Moto X 2013 or 2014, I'd be on it in a second. But it must work on Verizon. I'd probably be willing to switch to Google Fi, but I use too much data for it to be worth it at this point. I'm on a family plan on VZW, so my dad pays the base cost, I only pay for my data plan and handset insurance ($50/mo). I use ~10-15GB of data month, so Google Fi would be at least 3x that amount. And I'd lose the Verizon network, which is definitely the best in my area. GF has Sprint and my old roommate has T-Mobile, and they are both awful in many of my frequent locations, while VZW doesn't miss a beat.
Would love a smaller Nexus 6... or even just a smaller Moto X would be great.
...or why not keep the same moto x 2013 metrics and only update the hardware, camera and maybe give it a slight mAh bump?
The original design is cool and conservative yet can be classy with its custom backs. No need to ruin this balance with some new "let's-try-this-or-that" ideas.
The X feels solid like a good'ol Nokia did back in the day. It simply makes sense and has that thoughtful engineering approach to it. Something that isn't very common today among SP manufacturers.
Thread cleaned.

Not that I don't think a smaller Nexus 6 would be great, but there aren't any news stories about this anywhere that I know of, so it's a little hard to believe.
