Ordered N4 from Amazon, best way to RMA? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I ordered my 16GB Nexus 4 from a seller on Amazon on December 6th last year, when I was desperate to get my hands on this phone, and this seller had it for only $50 more than the Play store brand new.
Well, now I'm having issues with my N4 and I need to have it repaired or have an RMA done, but since I'm not the original owner I'm not sure if it's possible. The seller I bought it from, who is still actively selling on Amazon, just sent me an email after I asked him if there was any way to get the original order number, and if he can send an email stating that he was transferring ownership to me. All I received was a reply in which he simply said "Nope".
So, now I'm extremely frustrated and not really sure what to do. I need a working phone, but it doesn't look like I'm going to get what I need from the original owner. Any ideas?
Anyone else had a similar experience and was able to overcome it?

I don't know if this is fraud or not but you can tell Google you received it as a gift and they will transfer the warranty over

Or you can contact LG. They handle warranty claims on phones not bought at the play store

I told them that it was was a gift, but the rep. said that they need to get some confirmation info from the original owner before they can replace it. And LG told me to call Google. I will never buy an unlocked phone or a Nexus from Amazon. I guess this is what I get for being in a hurry lol.

They won't do anything for me without consent of the original owner.

Strange. I just bought a Nexus 4 on Craiglist (!) a month ago, got its back glass shattered today. I called Google, they told me to call LG. And the LG rep was really nice and gave me a RMA number right away after I gave him the IMEI number. Now I just have to ship the phone to LG and probably pay a hefty sum to have them repair it lol
I guess you can try calling this number that I called: 8007938896
Hope this helps!

If you want to be extreme and really want that RMA you can say that owner passed away. A friend of mine did that and they let the RMA transfer. Not saying you should though.

Just slipping in a casual bit of racism there? Well that's not allowed on XDA, you should probably edit your post or something.

I don't think I'll do that. I contacted Amazon to see if there is anything they can help me with.

Wow I'm an Asian and just seriously had a hard time understanding his accent. no offense to Mexican people! i will edit my post right away.
also update on my issues: i decided just to pick off the glass around the camera and buy a dbrand skin to stick on the back. Not the most elegant solution but... sure saves a lot of money

[Q] RMA: Asus or Google?

For those who have had issues with their N7, who did you have to go through to get a new one?
I have a feeling dealing with Asus will be a long and drawn out process but that's just an assumption.
Thanks
Well I can say I sent my tablet for a cracked screen on last week Tuesday and received an email on Monday night this week stating my tablet was being shipped back....it contained a tracking number and if already in transit which it should be here tomorrow.....I think that is really fast

I had to send it back to Asus. I purchased it from Sams Wholesale Club they refused to replace it even when I purchased a service plan from them....lesson learned....never by anything electronic from Sams... ! I couldnt go to Google since I didn't purchase it from them...thus leaving the manufacturing company Asus. No, warranty is non-transferable in normal circumstances. Call Google for clarification, though

Why should it? If he owns the bill everything should be okay. Sold a phone once wich still was in warranty period. Just copied the Bill and everything was OK.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Might work that way in the US, but in the UK a warranty isn't always transferable regardless of having the original POP because the device is technically 2nd hand and most warranties state it's for the original purchase only - definitely that way for the company I work for. If the original owner registered the unit for warranty then you're screwed. If not, you might be able to get away with it
I live in the us. Any way to check online?

Yes you can...I had a similar issue...bought off craigslist...screen had major flicker issues....if you get a hold of the person who sold you the phone and have them give you the receipt..then you can RMA it only through LG because its from t-mobile...mine was bought from google so google has the RMA processed.

If you did not purchase the device from Google Play you'll have to contact LG for warranty service. http://www.lg.com/us/support-mobile/lg-LGE960
If its from T-Mobile call customer care and get a warranty exchange if your phone line has the the device warranty.

Google cancelled my order for no reason. Can I do this?

I bought an 8gb and 16gb a month ago. The 8gb arrived. I thought it was broken so I RMA'd it and was waiting for it to arrive so I fixed it. I woke up today to notice my 16gb order has been canceled and RMA has been shipped. Can I keep the RMA and they charge me for it or will they block the IMEI?

Why? Is Google going to take his returned unit and sell it as new? That would be a **** thing to do. And as far as know they aren't selling refurbs.
OP, If you keep the one you were supposed to send back they will not honor warranty on it in the future. I know because I asked, I wanted to do the same thing and let a friend who is waiting on stock keep my original.

if you've always wanted the 16gb but only have the 8gb then its a sneaky good way to get 'another' upgraded 16gb nexus phone if it goes through, RMA the 8gb one and just keep it and hopefully they send you the 16gb version! (of course you'll be paying for BOTH the phones) but a good way to get another phone fast!:good:

How does the RMA process work?

I bought a slightly used Nexus 4 from a guy I bumped into yesterday morning. This afternoon, I wanted to flash a factory image (occam) but no matter what I do, my computer won't recognize my phone. This computer can see my Nexus 7 without a problem, but no go with the phone. The phone just charges.
I have uninstalled the adb devices, samsung and lg devices as well, all purged from the computer but nothing when I connect the N4.
Am I eligible to call in for an rma?

Call Google and see what they say. They will ask for the IMEI of the phone and the email address used when that phone was ordered. So you may need to bump into whoever sold you the phone again.

I had a problem that was very similar. (Daughter board failure) and the guy that sold me the phone stopped answering and refused to communicate.
I ended up having to send the phone to LG for repair. It was covered by the manufacturer warranty, but I had to be without a nexus for 2 weeks. (LG refuses to send a phone pre emptively like Google.
That's one reason to avoid the gray market and stick to ordering from Google directly.
Your only hope is if the original owner bought it from Google and transfers the info over to you.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
You can get the warranty transferred from the original guy to you. My buddy had to do this, he bought a used one and it went bad. Just contact the guy and call the Google play store and tell them you want the warranty transferred. 3 days later you will get a new N4, then of course ship the old one back.
The seller is not responding to my text or call. So, my option is to send it in to LG for service repair. I have initiated a service request (ship it in) and have to wait for return authorization.
Will they refuse service if your Nexus 4 is unlocked?

So, just received an email message from LG, states that in-warranty service must be go through the same place where you bought it. Only out of warranty service can be performed by LG.
How do you get LG to provide service on your nexus 4?
Sent from my GT-N7005 using xda premium
I think the out of warranty work they are referring to would be something like a cracked screen, which isn't covered under the standard warranty.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
so, a borked usb port on the phone is covered under warranty service but a cracked screen isn't??? makes no sense to me, but whatever. I'm just going to sell it on ebay. so sick of this non-sense.
LG sux. Eggs. One more reason to stay away from LG products. Never had problems with Samsung, ever. I had to get a Galaxy Nexus sent in to Samsung for warranty repair, actually it had a bad usb port, just like the N4, Samsung repaired it under warranty. Didn;t give me any problem. LG sux. Eggs. Another mental note--stay away from LG products.

[Q] RMA for the nexus 4

Is RMA like swapping out a faulty device for a new one through Google? How does it work? If my screen just one day doesn't turn on after having the phone for 6 months will they replace it for free? Do they send you a new device then you send your faulty one back? Or vice versa?

OK. In the UK, you ring Google Play, they send you an email with an RMA attachment and create a special order for you in your google wallet. You then order your new device and they take an authorisation on your card (they dont actually take the money, just "allocate" it to them, should you not return your faulty device), then they send you a new device and you send your old faulty one back to them within 21 days using their free TNT service that comes in the bag with your new replacement device.
So...
1) Ring google, they give you RMA attachment to print out
2) Order your device through the special order they have set up for you
3) Ensure you have a card with money on it so they can allocate it as security
4) When new device arrives, you have 21 days to return the old one to them (with the RMA you printed off in step 1) or they will take the allocated money off your card.
Hope it helps

No problem mate
EDIT: I should add that they will allocate the full cost of the handset until they receive the old one back. Then they will release that "hold" on that amount within 14 days (In reality they have released the hold on all three of my RMA devices before they even received the device back)
If you have got a cracked back for example, they will still exchange it, but they will bill you the cost of the smashed glass back.
Little chips and scratches they are not bothered about as the phones go to be refurbed, so as long as the back and front are "unsmashed" you will get all your money no sweat.
