I really want to like the HTC one for its design, screen and sound quality. But I just can't fathom the placement of the power button. It just makes no sense on such a tall phone. HTC is the ONLY manufacturer that places the power button on the top of such large devices. This fact alone should have been noticed by HTC.
Ya there is the volume wake mod but you still have to lock the device and using a widget for it is not a good solution. The power button is the single most used thing on a smartphone so to have it in such an awkward place is such a compromise that one really shouldn't have to make. This isn't a technical limitation or anything but just a poor decision by HTC. I hope they release a refresh version of the one with a side power button, the device would be nearly perfect then.

It's because the power button acts as an IR.
It had to be there. If it was on the side, you would have to use your phone in portrait mode nonstop when controlling the TV.

Or they could've did what samsung did with the GS IV.
It has never bothered me, and to be honest I prefer it to how it was on my Note 2.
Because my Note 2 was in a case, which meant that I had to push the buttons harder, I couldn't push the power button without accidentally activating the volume buttons and vice versa. It got to be very annoying.

It seems to be counter intuitive especially when compared to a power button on the side. You have to re position your grip to reach the top of the device which adds the possibility of dropping your device.

I hate the side power button personally, as it is very easy to hit it mistakenly, such as when you hand your phone to somebody else, and a top power button always felt more ergonomic to me. The side power button also made the phone wake up in my pocket.
However, they should definitely stick to one side for the power button, and not switch it around like the One X, One and Butterfly.

I've gotten used to the power button being on the side after owning two Galaxy devices. I previously used two HTC devices with the power button on the top left just like the One, however, I prefer the side layout. It's much easier to power on the phone and turn the screen on/off.

I disagree. I use it when I pick up the phone and then again when I put it down or into my pocket. In both instances I find it easy to just hit the button wherever it is. I'I'm currently using an iphone and an Asus tablet both of which have the button in more or less the same place. I'm more concerned about one-handedly hitting the back button and home button (which I bet gets used a whole lot more than the power button).
The power button sure is pressed often. But on the One, its kinda easy to reach. Tho I would've preferred it to be on the right side, like the Nexus 4 has. The IR sensor could've been a seperate module on the top, would've looked great as well.
The One is pretty "long" in terms of build and design, therefore, people with smaller hands will have a tough time reaching the power button with only one hand available. I can manage it barely, even tho I have pretty big hands....
Somebody mentioned vol wake. Venom Rom has vol wake and vol lock - its what I've used for the past 6 month due to a broken power button. So if venom Rom cones here problem solved. Not sure if it is though.....

Hmm. I guess I'm in the minority then. I always, always use two hands to hold my phone, since my hands are too small to just use one. I've never thought twice about where the power button is because I have to shift my grip regardless.

Really really dont like power on side of device.
Not really a big deal if you ask me... Unless of course you only have 1 hand? If my other hand is busy I'm pretty sure my pointer finger could reach it. I don't have any difficulties reaching the top left power button of my current phone. And the HTC One is just .5 or .6 inches higher than my current phone.
Maybe I'll practice whacking myself in the forehead with the top of the phone.

I must admit, I preferred it on the side like my Galaxy Nexus. But as someone else said, handing your phone to someone else (such as scanning it as a boarding pass in the airport) meant half the time they'd turn it off again, and the placement on the One should avoid this. I daresay I'll get used to it in time as well.

Who do i have to bl*w in HTC in order to get on screen buttons? Why do HTC refuses to implement onscreen buttons on their phones? they're so practical, they (and we) can remap them to their/our liking , and now they made the horrible decision to cut the multitasking button for good? because supposedly people dont use it? really HTC? you're stripping android of one of its best features? easy and almost instant switching between apps ? whatever people say, having to wait 2 more seconds to hold the back button to get multitask really makes an annoying difference

It's all in the flavor of the designer. I myself prefer this layout over android's on screen button.
And I must say if the HTC One had the on screen but I would have gone with Xperia ZL and never leaped to HTC One.

TBH I prefer physical capacitive buttons over pure software buttons. There are pro and contra for both of them - in the end it's a matter of taste - you get used to both of them.
What I really don't like are physical buttons like the home button on the Galaxy Line. They need to be implemented perfectly, like on the iPhone or they are a major nuisance.

Hi for example Xperia Z got on screen button and 5" screen but 3-4 mm, onscreen button taking space unnecessary so practically 4.7" in HTC one screen screen got same usable screen area as 5" of Xperia Z, I got S3 atm and when I install custom rom which enable on screen button and than I realise that on screen button is waste of precious screen size, for better information see using compare tools side-by side and you will see almost there is not much advantage of 5" screen because of onscreen button wasting space and look like .3" screen look like black strip at bottom, I would also like to see if anyone can compare actual usable screen area of Z vs ONE and post here please

On screen buttons would be an immediate deal breaker for me. The Nexus 4 will be the last phone I ever buy with on screen buttons. I hate it, with a passion.

To solve this losing work space complain, they could make made a phone with 5" screen like the butterfly and still get 4.8" real state .

One reason I like capacitive buttons a lot is the posibility to use S2W.
When I have the phone on the table I use this all of the time with HOX+
No posibility to do this with on screen buttons.

For the last time: you can DISABLE THIS BAR by enabling long-press back for menu on the One.
I would much rather have a three button layout (the third one being a dedicated menu button), but this two button layout isn't preventing me from buying it in anyway.

1. This image shows my standard grip/hold of the phone and it sets up all other actions.
2. Slide/Move forefinger to rest on the Power button
3. Press Power button firmly! (Yes that's my daughter - and now I can catch her thanks to Zoe )
4. Slide/Move forefinger back to original resting position behind phone.
5. Move thumb to sliding screen lock.
(Although you can see my initial grip has moved you'll find that your hand will naturally move as your position your thumb)
6. Press and slide the lock upwards and then move your thumb back to original grip.
(Your hand will return to where it was previously, you'll find that you end up doing the unlock and re-position in one fluid movement)
Now you're good to go and you still haven't had to remove your left hand from your pants yet! WIN!

Very true however these forums aren't just for people who wish to root their devices. I'd just noticed a few mentions about the power button placement and how awkward etc it is so wanted to share how it can be done very simply. Of course to most this may seem stupid but to the odd few perhaps might show them where they're going wrong.

I think there is some good info there, I was having a lot of trouble pressing the power button and even dropped the phone while trying to do so. I guess it was my own fault for trying to operate the phone with my feet.

Maybe though I think you may need to also use a charger and maybe ever plug socket to charge your phone.....but don't quote me on that.

Hmm, been thinkin´bout launching a kickstarter project to create a lever-thingy-device that attach to the side of the One with a lever and linkage. If you press the lever on the side it will by the means of a clever linkage transform the pushing force up onto the top of the device where it actually pushes the real power button.
Would you like to kick in ...say 20 bucks for this? I´ll start cadcamming and create a mockup at once

Seriously though, when I got got my HTC Butterfly (still waiting for my preorder of the HTC One here is Australia) which is also a larger device, I found I pull the phone out of my left pocket, press the power button with my left index finger, then swipe to unlock with my right hand... If I had to I could somewhat perform the method described in the OP, which I found quite awkward and having to shuffle my grip with danger of the phone slipping.
Shall be interesting with the One (if the damned thing ever arrives...)

Also your power button is not so raised like the volume button? If you take the device in a vertical position the high zone of the power button is more "pressed" in the cover than the lower one. Can you confirm that is like my description also in you device?

This is exactly like mine, so I guess its normal.
I'll admit I struggle to find it quickly, there's lots of fiddling going on. It's the only negative about a great little tablet, maybe I'll get used to it.

Install a custom kernel w/ double tap to wake or s2w... makes life a lot easier double tapping the screen than fumbling around trying to find the power button.
Just fyi this is due to slight differences in the way it is assembled. I have 2 N7 2013's and one has a very solid, clicky, power button which feels great and feels like a real button. The other one has a noticeably smushier feel when pressed, but at least it isn't unevenly oriented like yours. You could exchange for another one, but if you've been following these forums you know that the feel of the power button is the least of the factors that should be considered when deciding to exchange or not.

I will send the device directly to the online store where I buy the n7. They will send me another new one free.. 10 days warranty with the shop ... I will let you know ... thanks for your help.

I agree you have a fault. Exchange or warranty fix.
My 1st Nexus 7 (2013) screen broke. I took the screen off to fix. So I just checked the buttons on the inside.
Basically, both should stick out equally. There is a small elastic connector on both sides of the power button. One of yours might have broken. The volume is one big button for both up and down combined. So the elastic bands are much farther apart. Both volume switches push out this button. So, everything has to be assembled perfectly or the power button will be mushy or out of alignment. Much more flexibility on the volume buttons.

If you are rooted, try flashing the elementalx kernel, you just double tap the screen to turn it on, or swipe along the bottom to turn on as well.
Just another option. I hate the power button position, so that kernel fixes my need to use the button almost entirely.

Lol...initially it's quite confusing now it's better... the reason they placed there is because it is easily accessible when you're holding the phone from behind...by this they kept the marvelous rectangle design and also easy access of button...if it was phone the place of button would have been difficult

So I was on the fence about switching from my iPhone 6+ to the Note5 and when I tried it in the store, one feature sealed the deal. Amazingly, I haven't seen it mentioned in ANY review I've read or watched all over the web. Samsung should be focusing on this in their marketing efforts too. I'm referring to the one handed REDUCE SCREEN SIZE mode. With a simple triple tap of the home button, the entire screen shifts down into what is likely fully one hand operable by almost hand size. This is genius to me and a world more useful on a (let's face it) huge phone than Apple's stupid and awkward Reachability thing which just shifts the interface halfway down the screen.
Am I crazy for thinking this is such a big deal??
maybe because it's been around on a number of Androids for a while now. it's not really a new thing. it's one of the features i give iPhoners as a reason to switching over to larger-screened Androids since before the G2 and N3.

Never having owned an iPhone till my company gave me a 6, i can understand why nixonx loves this.
The iPhone ui puts the back arrow waaaay in the upper left of the screen. What a completely dumb thing since they dont have a back button built in at the bottom like android does.
Yeah this is a good feature for using the phone while driving, to quickly reply to email or text. (Not recommended to use your phone while driving)
iPhone has same "feature" called reachability. Not new for either device.
S5 has a similar feature too (one handed mode)
Apple with their obsession to be retard-friendly, with 1 button on their smart devices and 1 button computer mouse...

I agree, but I've since learnt that there's a left-swipe gesture you can use to go back on iOS which is pretty effective

I don't post often but this thread is just ridiculous. First off, the iPhone also has this feature called "Reachability" starting with the iPhone 6. It's not pressing the iPhones home button but rather "tapping" on the home button twice. This brings down the screen to use in one handed mode.

Ya if your new to notes its pretty neat. Its been on the last couple notes though. U just got to it a different way but same concept
If ur use to half ass iphone concepts like the accesability feature when u double tap the home button it seems like this is a more realistic one handed feature

As someone who switched from an iPhone 6+ (8 months with the device) to a Note 5, I can attest that Apple's 'Reachability' feature is a fairly half ass effort at improving one handed usability and no where near as useful as reducing the entire screen to thumb reachable. First of all, activating it is hit or miss experience that led me to rarely attempting it because the 'double light tap' needs to be done pretty perfectly for it to work the first time. From a usability standpoint, it doesn't bring things on the far side of the screen any closer to your thumb horizontally, it merely brings them lower, meaning you still have to reach to the far side. It was also not always predictable as to when it would jump the screen back up to normal mode and it always felt more like a bug than a feature and many reviewers felt the same about this.
As for it being available on the Note 4, I find the home button triple press to be a faster and 100% reliable activation method.

I agree that it isn't like Sammy's implementation of reaching things, but there were some aspects of it that I did like, which mostly had to do with being able to add additional apps to utilise that open space, such as Carpe Diem and Reach App.
as far as not being able to reach the far corner, there was an app called MyReachability that brought the opposite corner closer to your thumb. it's kind of lousy though. and yeah, the light double-tapping to actually take was a bit annoying.

i have used the feature a handful of times, but I think it should be slightly larger. The size that it shrinks down to feels even smaller than the iPhone 4's screen size.... I think it should be just ever so slightly larger.

Someone in another forum was unfortunate enough to have to go through 3 phones. The ones he had issues with had a slanting power button where pressing the bottom of it did nothing. They said the phone that worked had a correctly functioning power button. I was just curious if any of you have the slant?

Yep mine is slanted. I think it was normal when i got it but after a week the bottom half is stuck. And pressing there does nothing
You can't press the bottom of the button, only the top clicks.
Mine is as well. I have yet to have any sticking.

Mine doesn't stick also.
I tried out 4 demo units at a corporate store. 3 out of the 4 had the slant. I brought it up and they swapped me a new one that is normal. We'll see if it slants after a while.
I just noticed my power button I ly works if I press top or middle bottom is dead. This has never been an issue. Only reason I notice it now is because of this thread.

Mine works regardless where i press it.
I have the slant and can only press the top of the button. I thought it was just something wrong with my case, but removed it to check after seeing this thread.

I think it's supposed to be more like a rocker. If you press the bottom "dead" spot hard enough, it will work. Mine has been like this since day one.
I see it as a complete and utter non-issue, because my finger can't press just the very bottom part anyway - I have to use my fingernail to press it and I have to work my way down the power button to find the exact spot where it stops working.

Mine is exactly the same, I just noticed it last night, then went searching and stumbled upon this thread. I'm contemplating swapping it because I don't want it to fail down the road, but I also don't want to be paranoid (which I tend to be about my cars, electronics, etc.)
Has anyone had the button completely fail?
I believe it is kinda supposed to be this way, I have read that it is hinged on the bottom. So, there should be no risk of it failing because of it, and theoretically should last longer than normal power buttons, but yeah, if feels a little crappy.

Thanks for the feedback. I actually went into the Verizon store on my lunch break since it's over by Subway, and I played with two of the other Droid Turbo 2's that they had on the floor. They felt exactly the same as mine (bottom 1/3 of the button doesn't click) and the sales guy I talked to agreed.
Dang issues
I'm having this issue as well. can't press bottom power button slightly, hopefully it's not that big of an inconvenience for people because this is a great phone so far I love it, besides the bl unlock and root methods not being available for months and the lack of software support...or just plain slow support... If any ha-ha well good luck guys I hope it works out send those defective units in!!
Yeah, the power button kind of sucks. Hard to press. But oh well, I'm certainly not sending in my phone just for that.

Based on the photos posed above, it looks like it was just a design oversight and likely can't be "fixed" in the sense we would like it to be. The ones that have perfect power buttons probably have a stronger spring mechanism, and seem to be in the minority.
The good news is that it doesn't look like it will be indicicative of future failure based on the design, unlike when older iPhones would do this and then fail completely as the rubber plunger broke free.
