[Q] What is the possibility we get Google Wallet working on the AT&T version? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I know AT&T is working on ISIS and likely won't allow google wallet out of the box, but other phone devs have figured out ways to make it work. What are the chances of this happening for the GS4?

Lol we dont even have root yet. Give it time.

Well, I was waiting for the entire life of the HTC One X for Wallet use and never got it... Maybe it will be different with Samsung *crosses fingers* :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:

I've been using GWallet on my SIII for a long time, hopefully ogdobber or someone else from the Google wallet fix for SGS3 thread will be able to work their magic on the S4 because it's something I certainly enjoy using it!

I used Google Wallet a lot on my Sprint S III. I didn't know AT&T blocked it.

they block it so they can use their own app called ISIS, which is freaking vaporware as far as I'm concerned. Why block GWallet on everything if you don't have your own software ready yet??

Stop killing android carriers

Cnet just put up a review of the Motorola Atrix, one of the most anticipated smart-phones. AT&T has blocked the ability to download 3rd party apps . "You can't install third-party apps" and goes on to say "No change of heart on third-party applications, as that feature is disabled on the Atrix."
Google's(andy rubin) response is to say let me market decide. I truly agree with this statement but when the carriers are in power (two year contracts) it doesn't let the market work. General consumers dont know know the difference between android phones. Consumer assume since they are getting an android phone, all android phones are the same. This blocking of 3rd party apps creates a bad user experience and users will blame android and not the carriers.

ITA.
Looking on the slighter brighter side, CNET also said this (emphasis added):
Of course, you've also got your obligatory AT&T services--AT&T Navigator, AT&T FamilyMap, and AT&T U-Verse Live TV--on there, but for once, you can actually uninstall any of these apps if you wish.

It's not enough, but it's a start.
Side loading apps is such a trivial issue on any device, including devices on AT&T. Root not even required. So for the tiny percentage that want to do this (like rooters) the option is there.
No Third party software? No "FREE" bootloader? No reasonable laptop dock price? It really destroyed the purpose of open-sourced software.....I guess AT&T kills the fun of having an Android phone.....I went from "must have one" to "might have one"...sigh.....
My last 3 phones were not purchased from AT&T because of similar issues. AT&T modifies the phone to disable installation of anything not coming from their store.
I've been considering switching to a different provider because I find it very expensive to buy unlocked phones just to get them in their enabled state. I know I would lose the flexibility of using the phone around the world, but I don't travel that much.
Is Verizon doing this same thing on their phones? If not I may consider switching to them. How about Sprint?

AT&T restricts third-party apps, which means you can download only from the Android Market - which is not AT&T's store, btw.

As far as I know, AT&T is the only one of the 4 major carriers that blocks 3rd-party apps. As previously mentioned, getting around that restriction is extremely simple and does not require rooting the phone. The Sideload Wonder Machine, for one, is very easy to use.

Common users aren't going to be side loading to begin with. If its not in the market they aren't going to care. If they care they can google it and find XDA or the plethora of other sites that detail the simple few step process.
i agree it shouldn't be an issue, it is and its an easy fix so I don't worry about it. Efuse is a bigger issue to development that this. If it does have efuse I won't buy it out of principal and I'll get an inspire.

At least in the performance realm, it doesn't seem too need much help from hacks. Although I'm looking forward to seeing what can be accomplished...

Google wallet and AT&T S3

Is there, or will there be a way to use google wallet on the non sprint S3s? With or without root or rom?
There has to be some info on this out there. Is Google Wallet just a gimmick or will this really take off? If so I would think AT$T and Verizon being bigger providers than Sprint, there would have to be the ability to get these to work with it.

there is info on this, if you search.
wallet is only support officially by sprint. the rest of the carriers you will have to find the modded apk for wallet.
(also, i hit the thanks button accidentally instead of 'quote' on your post, so free thanks for you!)
I searched, but anything that comes up is about Sprint having it and AT&T not...But at least I know that it will be possible at some point.
The question is if the At&t version has a secure element. If it doesn't, then there is no chance.

How do we go about finding something like that out? If they are wanting their version of the s3 to work with some other "google wallet" type system, it would seem it would have all the same requirements. I dont see them killing the ability completely, just had the software side removed. But who knows what these guys will do these days.
Att is developing their own system with some other carriers called ISIS. Probably not a chance to get Google wallet working on the att version.

EDIT: That only works on rooted devices, my bad
Having to root it is not a big deal, I just wanted to know it was possible to use it if the need came up. Right now I dont think NFC payments are big enough to consider a must have, but if the day comes that 8 of 10 shops use some sort of nfc payment system it will change my mind for sure. I just like to know that I can do something. Im sorta waiting to root as well Its running like a champ and everything that i use daily is working without a root. Once a nice easy one click is out that will not trip the counter I will go for it, or if some app or ability that I just have to use requires it. But just enjoying the phone for now as is
I am rooted still doesn't work on i747 just hangs on activating

Maybe now that so many are getting this phone we will see some work being done to figure this out.
to get it to work you will need to fudge the phone into thinking it's connected with Sprint using Market Enabler or equivalent. That's I had to do on my G Nexus in canada.
so, for some reason, i installed it, it loads but i get this message, and just stopps.
"Initializing your device. this make take a few min...... blahh blahh.. "
thats it..
Worked for me on Canadian sgs3...
I'll try post instructions for it tomorrow evening.

The wallet application is in N7, just got frozen when the sign in of the device is in uk. Same for magazine app and sound search widget. If your device is rooted and have titanium backup, they can all be defrosted. No good for wallet app, though, as there's no terminal in the UK to use it; opening the app will say it's not supported in this region.

[Q] I can't use Google wallet if I am rooted?

This is my first time having an NFC device, so please bear with me. I rooted my phone the evening I received it. Now I'm trying to set up Google Wallet, and it says that my device is unsupported. In the help topic regarding this message, it mentions something about rooted devices being unsupported due to security reasons, can I still use this feature? Is it discouraged in any way?
If anybody has some insight or experience with this, I'd like to know.

The reason it is discouraged is because anyone (with the now-how) can brute-force access your pin if your phone is rooted. And then skip away making payments on goodies.

I had that happen at Taco Bueno. And a McDonalds. But at some McDonalds it works. I think that so few people use this system that when its broken no one complains. And its probably never even tested when they set it up.
Typically you can just tap your phone to the thing (no need to be in the app). It'll prompt you for a PIN. Then you can pay.
If it's not working you may have a poor data connection? I think it requires data to work.

I'd still say it's more secure than that. Anyone can swipe a card and charge it as credit. Relatively few people would know how to brute force hack google wallet on a rooted device.
Everyone.
Google wallet does not require a data connection.
If its not working , I read on the wallet website to "hold it about an inch" from the terminal. Without placing it on the terminal. Try to see if that works.

Yeah mine didn't work at the gas station the other day, though I didn't log out of Google Wallet before I flashed a rom and rooted recently so some say that it'll never work again after that because of the secure element getting locked or something like that. Hopefully that's not true.
I've flashed and reflashed a lot. All you need to do is delete the data, connect to high speed internet like WiFi, then open it up. Worked for me.

Google Wallet?

Hi, I'm new to the LG brand of phones, but I've had just about ever other brand. I wanted to know if LG phones have been able to use Google Wallet, and if someone can test Google Wallet on a VZW G2. I'm thinking about picking it up as my upgrade soon, but also was considering the GS4 since I know I can get wallet to function on that easily. Obviously I know information on this at this point is going to be scarce, but I hope someone can shed some light on this for me!

I understand this. Its the same story for all other VZW phones. Except the GS4 can use it just fine so long as you have root and the MoDaCo Toolkit. Granted the GS4 has a secure element which Google Wallet requires. My main question is I guess.... does the G2 have an onboard secure element? ISIS require a secure element Sim card to use. Google Wallet only looks for an internal one.
Now that we have root for all variants of the G2, can someone test this out? The directions from this thread should help out a bit. Although this is all assuming that the G2's firmware has the required Libs as well.
I would appreciate it very much if someone could test this!
How about At&T version of G2 ? Anybody tryed yet?

Google needs to end the block. It's eliminating competition by blocking Google wallet.
ISIS can actually run on rooted roms now. Search it up. People have been running it on the Droid DNA for a bit now. Google isn't the one who is blocking Wallet by choice. Verizon, AT&T, & T-mobile are all on the ISIS bandwagon, and do not allow Google Wallet to run on their network officially . Normally you should be able to use any legal software on your carrier according to the FCC, but Verizon is actually getting around this by not including secure elements in phones but instead moving the secure element to the SIM card which Google Wallet does not check at the moment.
Since I don't have a G2 yet, I can't test the things I would like to. The thread I linked to previously here should give some instructions on how to install Google Wallet from the Play Store and see if it functions. Like i said we may need some lib files though from a Sprint variant. Usually Sprint is the only carrier to support Google Wallet on their devices. Ultimately the VZW G2 may not have an on-board secure element, and we may just be stuck using ISIS unless Google codes Wallet to look for an external SIM SE.

Try this module with xposed framework. It's worked for me in the past to get Wallet installed from the market on my Droid DNA. You need to edit your build.prop though to match a supported device like the Nexus 4/Galaxy Nexus. MoDaCo Toolkit module has a nice build.prop edit section you can use.
Once you get it installed, don't change the build.prop back until you go through the wallet setup (if it even launches)
From what I'm reading from you guys here, it seems that even installing wallet is a challenge! I always thought that was the easy part lol. The hard part is dealing with if it actually functions or not :/

Nah the Google wallet installer will not run on unsupported devices (a la the build.prop changes) with or without the module. Same deal on most other phones that aren't explicitly a nexus. Do you have a list of what I need to change the build.prop to to allow install? I'll give it another try. But I bet the "secure element" being in the Sim will put the kabosh on all of this anyways. ****ing Verizon.. man.
