[Q] I can't use Google wallet if I am rooted? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is my first time having an NFC device, so please bear with me. I rooted my phone the evening I received it. Now I'm trying to set up Google Wallet, and it says that my device is unsupported. In the help topic regarding this message, it mentions something about rooted devices being unsupported due to security reasons, can I still use this feature? Is it discouraged in any way?
If anybody has some insight or experience with this, I'd like to know.

I have the evo lte rooted with same unsupported device message, yes it will still work

The reason it is discouraged is because anyone (with the now-how) can brute-force access your pin if your phone is rooted. And then skip away making payments on goodies.

What would be the chances of someone getting that close to you, they would have to be pretty much hugging you

Well seems about as secure as having somebody run off with your actual wallet... So off-topic but where are the places where I can actually use Google Wallet >_>

Any place that has tap-to-pay or pay-pass features (forgot what the actual name is). I've seen it at McDonald's, CVS/Walgreens, Best Buy, and a few other large chains around town.

Plenty of you fly to Japan and China, they have been using it for years. You can try looking up PayPass mechant, such as this link: http://www.google.com/wallet/how-it-works/in-store.html

So it doesn't have to be specifically for google wallet? They work on the things like the speedpass at speedway or your creditcard where you just tap it to the machine and it gets your infO?

Awesome! Looking forward to trying this out in the next few weeks. Hope I remember to try it when I see it...

I tried to use this at Walgreens today. They had the translucent blue PayPass terminal. I sat there for about 30 seconds and nothing happened. I even tried to enter the app and still nothing. NFC was on, and my card is attached in Google Wallet.
I think I set up wallet, then unlocked and rooted, then had to re-set up Wallet. Am I doing something wrong? The clerk was staring at me like I was crazy, just holding my phone next to the terminal....

I had that happen at Taco Bueno. And a McDonalds. But at some McDonalds it works. I think that so few people use this system that when its broken no one complains. And its probably never even tested when they set it up.
Typically you can just tap your phone to the thing (no need to be in the app). It'll prompt you for a PIN. Then you can pay.
If it's not working you may have a poor data connection? I think it requires data to work.

I'd still say it's more secure than that. Anyone can swipe a card and charge it as credit. Relatively few people would know how to brute force hack google wallet on a rooted device.

Everyone.
Google wallet does not require a data connection.
If its not working , I read on the wallet website to "hold it about an inch" from the terminal. Without placing it on the terminal. Try to see if that works.

Yeah mine didn't work at the gas station the other day, though I didn't log out of Google Wallet before I flashed a rom and rooted recently so some say that it'll never work again after that because of the secure element getting locked or something like that. Hopefully that's not true.

I've flashed and reflashed a lot. All you need to do is delete the data, connect to high speed internet like WiFi, then open it up. Worked for me.

Google wallet and AT&T S3

Is there, or will there be a way to use google wallet on the non sprint S3s? With or without root or rom?
There has to be some info on this out there. Is Google Wallet just a gimmick or will this really take off? If so I would think AT$T and Verizon being bigger providers than Sprint, there would have to be the ability to get these to work with it.

there is info on this, if you search.
wallet is only support officially by sprint. the rest of the carriers you will have to find the modded apk for wallet.
(also, i hit the thanks button accidentally instead of 'quote' on your post, so free thanks for you!)
I searched, but anything that comes up is about Sprint having it and AT&T not...But at least I know that it will be possible at some point.
The question is if the At&t version has a secure element. If it doesn't, then there is no chance.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
How do we go about finding something like that out? If they are wanting their version of the s3 to work with some other "google wallet" type system, it would seem it would have all the same requirements. I dont see them killing the ability completely, just had the software side removed. But who knows what these guys will do these days.
Att is developing their own system with some other carriers called ISIS. Probably not a chance to get Google wallet working on the att version.

EDIT: That only works on rooted devices, my bad
Having to root it is not a big deal, I just wanted to know it was possible to use it if the need came up. Right now I dont think NFC payments are big enough to consider a must have, but if the day comes that 8 of 10 shops use some sort of nfc payment system it will change my mind for sure. I just like to know that I can do something. Im sorta waiting to root as well Its running like a champ and everything that i use daily is working without a root. Once a nice easy one click is out that will not trip the counter I will go for it, or if some app or ability that I just have to use requires it. But just enjoying the phone for now as is
I am rooted still doesn't work on i747 just hangs on activating
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
Maybe now that so many are getting this phone we will see some work being done to figure this out.
to get it to work you will need to fudge the phone into thinking it's connected with Sprint using Market Enabler or equivalent. That's I had to do on my G Nexus in canada.
so, for some reason, i installed it, it loads but i get this message, and just stopps.
"Initializing your device. this make take a few min...... blahh blahh.. "
thats it..
Worked for me on Canadian sgs3...
I'll try post instructions for it tomorrow evening.

Decent nexus 7 anti theft app?

I'd like to install an anti theft app on my n7. I've got Where's My Droid on my phone, but the thing is, the nexus doesn't have a data signal to access its GPS location at the drop of a dime.... it would only be able to be tracked if it is currently connected to WiFi, right? If it wasn't connected to WiFi then there would be no way to track it that I can think of. Anyways, what are some good anti theft apps that you guys are using?
Another question, has any used Tablet Talk, or so,etching similar? Its an app that sync your phone and tablet together which allows text messages to be sent front your nexus, but it uses your mobile number. Are there any other apps out there like this? Would really love to hear about some experiences with Tablet Talk or similar apps so I know what I should purchase. Thanks in advance.

What is the point... besides a password how would a tracking app help. They will just wipe the tab anyway doesn't even need to be booted. If it's password protected its not going to connect to unknown networks anyway. So either way you look at it you lose it its gone. If you left it open counting on them to connect it good luck...lol if they are smart enough to steal it I'm pretty sure they understand how to do a factory reset.

You can install Cerberus as a system app and it will withstand a factory reset. However, if they decide to flash a new ROM you are screwed. But you are pretty much right about once you lose it is is gone since it has to be connected to WiFi to send back data.

I have Cerberus.. but it most likely will be useless... unless it is taken like at work where I already have Wi-Fi setup on it, it will never be able to phone home and the pattern lock will prevent the new owner from setting up a new access point without having to wipe the unit anyway because it will get locked out.
A phone is a different beast altogether.

Yea, phones are a different thing... not only do you have the opportunity to track but also they are tagged to a network. But a WiFi only tab... even with an autowifi app.. the chances of both apps running at the time stolen and connected to WiFi are really slim. Besides the fact that you couldn't go busting in a residence just because you knew it was in there......

Assuming that your tab has some sort of pin/pattern lock/face unlock protection and your Wi-Fi is always on, then there shouldn't be much problem for the auto-Wi-Fi app to connect and enable access for Cerberus. Mind you that wefi pro DOES start on boot.

I have Avast installed on my Nexus 7. Don't care for the AV, but it does have built in anti theft, where if your N7 is rooted, it can bury itself deep in the system and survive hard-resets. Not sure how well it does, and hope never to find out, but it looks alright. There are probably similar apps out there.
Avast here too. AV does seem to slow some things down some, I guess I'll turn it off. The "locate" feature works well with Google Voice number. Turns on your GPS then sends location to GV (on a PC). Only time I hope to need it is if I leave my Nexus somewhere and I need to remember where (hoping it wasn't stolen). I'm a bit paranoid since I recently had a phone stolen with no security software on it.

Passwords aren't going to get your tablet back. IMO, the biggest risk of losing a tablet is accidently leaving it someplace. I have a business card taped to the protective case of my Nexus and have the app "Android Lost" installed. If my tablet is found by an honest person, then they will call the number on the business card and all is well. If it is found by someone not so honest, the odds of them being sophisticated enough to know how to "wipe the tab" are slim to none. It is more likely that if they are stopped by a passwork, they'll just ditch the tab in the trash or try to "get a reward" by calling me. Without a password, they'll probably at least use it long enough to run down the battery. In that case I at least have a chance of locating it via "Android Lost".
edit: If I were a student, using my tablet "on campus" everyday, I might reconsider the risk. The "campus environment" probably is more conducive to actually having a tablet stolen.

Even if that were true, so what?
You are missing the point.
Okay. I'm at a conference and and look away and someone grabs my Nexus 7. I was using WiFi via my phone since I never use WiFi from unsecure sources. They run away and hours later turn it on. Password is required. They don't know it and after X number attempts the tablet is now locked.
The tablet is not going to connect to any WiFi near them because it is setup to not allow unsecure WiFi connections.
How is cerebrus going to help me find my Tablet ??? It won't, it can't. If they can't use the Tablet (its locked out now right), it doesn't matter if Cerebrus is on it or not.
On a device with 3G, We are talking about something totally different. and I use Android Lost for that. Works great and I know a couple people who found their phones with it, including one that didn't even have it installed when it was "acquired".... they had it installed via the play store and then took control of the device.
The tablet without 3G is not the same beast as it requires working WiFi to do anything. Can't phone home or do anything without it.
The best protection is my data and backing it up OFF the tablet on a regular basis so that if I break my tablet or it gets stolen, I can quickly rebuild a new one with my apps and data in a short time period.

NFC - Found Any Use For It?

I was wondering if any found any real good use of the NFC or the Google wallet app. I have $10 from signing up, and am thinking about going over to 7-11, but it is weird when on the MasterCard finder, it says there is NFC checkout and you don't want to seem like an idiot trying to check out.
So little use for it I have NFC what to use it for.

It would be so much simpler and have a far greater reach if you just had a QR code in it.
Using NFC for just a website seems a total waste to me.

The only thing I saw with it, was that it can'y verify payments immediately unless it's connected. I have tried twice. Once at Best Buy, failed because the systems don't work. Second at 7-11 and it worked but it doesn't say whether it took the money ou, because I didn't have it connected.

I thought places just had to accept NFC, or Mastercard's PayPass thing, and not specifically Google Wallet?
I like to take an nfc chip with me where ever i go and find ladies with nfc capable phones and put my contact in their phone all ninja-like and then just be casual and say "aye bay bay, call me sometime" and when shes like "i dont have your number" i tell her to look at her phone and her panties instantly become soaked.

[Q] Google Wallet on a Rooted phone

Ok, I've tried to get Google Wallet on my rooted S4 without asking too many questions, but I'm not sure if I'm messed with the system too much or not but regardless of what I do I am unable to get the NFC portion of Google Wallet working. I am running MDL and have frozen SE on the system.
I did try to follow the information on how to get it to work for the S3 and the S4 on AT&T but I am either missing a step or am really bad at getting simple things to work. Does this work on a rooted S4? Are the steps even the same? How can I learn more about this without running and asking questions for every little problem I have? (last one is really just more of a frustrated question).
If anyone could take a few minutes to point me into the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. If it can't be done, I understand (and may be relieved as sad as that sounds).

I actually have Sprint, but have been reading the other forums just incase my questions can be answered by a little research.
The problem I have is that it still says unsupported device but when I go to scan against an NFC reader (IE like those at CVS) it doesn't transmit anything. I turn my phone on, open it, and even open google wallet but nada.

Stock (MDL) rooted rom. I have frozen a few services /apps and removed the Sprint scumware that was installed along with a few samsung apps, but haven't been able to figure out what I'm doing wrong.
Crawrj actually posted a fix for the Google Wallet issues on rooted Mdl but has taken it down since he baked it into the MDl rom. I think I still have the zip to fix the issue on my computer, so I'll put a link here in a bit

Thanks man.. I'll have to check it out in 8 hours when I get home.
I installed his zip file. It does start up now, but says unsupported device.
Try reinstalling it, and then see if it fixes it. If that doesn't work, I'll search the threads for some solutions.

Is there a fix for the unsupported device? The above file is for deodexed ROMs.
Specifically I am rooted stock, and would like to see some love.
It does the same for me but I think mine is working... it's really weird. I wasn't able to find a fix yet so hopefully someone might be able to help us out.

I actually may have stumbled upon the fix using NottachXposed. Basically I just installed Wallet as normal and attached my account, then I went to NottachXposed›Applications›checked Google Wallet hack and rebooted. I have used Wallet 2x since doing so at 7-11 and at CVS. Nag screen does not show and my purchases went through.

Maybe you're broke?
<- Not helpful.
Actually, dumb question, but you do have a valid fund source set up in the app?

Can I have some money?
Can any one confirm Wallet working on Rooted stock? Mine is displaying "unsupported device", but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

Google Wallet Tap and Pay

Not sure if anyone has noticed....but on 4.4 Wallet does not give any errors during set up. I am S-Off, Super CID on ARHD 40.3 and I am on TMOUS. Have not gotten an opportunity to test yet...
It's been discussed. It works on 4.4

Thanks,
so does that mean the Secure Element is out the window?

Google virtualized it, not sure if that means a physical implementation is going to go away entirely, but so far seems to be working.

Yeah Google has said that for android 4.4 and up every device with a NFC chip will work with tap and pay because it no longer needs to look for the secure element or something like that but yeah it works been using it for a while now love it.
Now for them to release it in other parts of the world and really put a push behind NFC payments.
Putting my flame-retardant clothes on, but if Apple were to 'invent' tap and pay with their next device, the whole world would move very quickly to get on the bandwagon. Google should have similar ambitions.
