I was wondering which phone will have more options for ROMs and the like, because after seeing that s4 keynote, I was pretty off put by all of the gimmicky features, while the One seems pretty cool. Any advice?

Way too early to tell on either front. I suspect both will have great options to be honest, they are both likely to be very popular.
Speculation only, the GS4 will sadly probably have a larger user base and hence larger development base, but quantity does not equal quality.
Personally I wouldn't let whatever minor difference there sway your decision either way, and would base the decision on specs and features useful to you.
I don't know about Roms quality, we have to see but i'm pretty sure that the S IV is gonna be so easy to root unlike the One that you have to deal with that HTC dev.

lol what's so hard with HTC dev? It's just a matter of doing a couple of copy pastes on your browser and the command prompt for once in the device's lifetime then off you go. I don't find it hard at all.

It is "harder" than rooting a samsung phone. Definitely not for noobs. And then you have to fastboot flash kernels most of the time. It's easier on a samsung phone, that's a fact.
Maybe u should get Xperia Z... Sony is more hack friendly with the unlock bootloader service and sources...
It has an open bootloader like it's predecessors. So installing custom firmwares via Odin will be possible.
Unlike HTC or Sony phones, you don't have to unlock it first.

A 5 year old could root a Samsung phone. Plug it in, open ODIN, throw in the file, click START..... Done. Wasn't a fan when rooting the wife's HTC Inspire 4g. Her new Note2 was a piece of cake (just like my 3 galaxy devices!).
Plus.... Chainfire is great with Samsung devices!!
Samsung phones are much easier to root and play with. Also you have to try real hard to hard brick a Samsung phone.
As for the ROM development quality I can speak about my experience having owned the EVO 4G, EVO 3D, One X, Galaxy S2, Skyrocket, S3, Note, Note 2. To me it seems Touchwiz is much less intrusive than Sense on the Android OS as a whole. Seems sense devs usually have to play with the rom base longer than Touchwiz devs. Also using the example of the S3, a slew of mods/tweaks are actually compatible across all the different variants of the S3. Another thing I noticed (not bashing the work of Sense Devs) there is a different quality of devs working on Samsung devices here on xda. This especially shows on the international versions of the phones.

Not sure if its official or obvious or both. But a someone working from Samsung told me that someone has just received official RC for Gingerbread for Galaxy S.

Sure Hope so! im getting tired of waiting around for samsung. It's this type of customer service that makes me think of switching to an HTC for my next phone, even though i will miss out on dual core and high end video graphics.
Manufacturers need to start focusing on the total experience rather than hardware. (i would love to see how battery lives of next gen android phones compare)

HTC is better? The Desire came out at the same time as the Galaxy S around here (I chose between the two), and they are basically in the same spot we are. http://www.product-reviews.net/2011...htc-desire-owners-will-get-update-eventually/ Waiting for it to come...eventually. A quick search reveals the Incredible doesn't have it officially yet either.
At least us XDA'ers won't have to wait an eternity for carrier-specific releases. In Bell's case they will be months molesting 2.3 (and possibly screwing it up) even after Samsung is finished, but I won't be beholden to their whims.

Well, this person works in Nordic division for Samsung so can't really say. My guess is European first. The word is that the release will take some time because Samsung received a lot of complaints for Froyo- so they want to do this one right and freeze the development for Galaxy S- consider it as a farewell gift from Samsung.

There will be some other issues again. The battery is still the same, the display is the same, the button won't change, the scratches your devices already have won't go ... so ... what is it good for?!
My stock Galaxy S was ok for calling, sms, mails, and some enternmaint as it comes. So it did/does what they said. Switching to other ROM or adjusting this or that was born by some boring nights at work, just to see how the things are working. But no real need to change anything. So, if they will release another ROM - nice, but if not - who cares.
To have always the newest (is it always better?), the more shiny (unfortunaley it will be easier scratched), the more expensive (did you earn more money in the last past?), the glamour of modern style (do you really think a smartphone beams you to the rich und famous?) belongs exactly to:

According to Eldar Murtazin from mobile-review.com 2.3 version should be in 2 months time for Galaxy S phones. At least in Europe.

No your not the only one. On paper the Galaxy S should be faster than the Desire (which i owned before Galaxy S). But it lags so much its terrible sometimes .. im even embarrased to show the phone to iPhone users.
The problem is the crappy RFS filesystem!!! (Google it). I hope they get rid of that stupid crap and switch to EXT2 or 4.
Sometimes the phone just doesnt react to anything .. and i end up hammering the thumb on the screen. But the phone is frozen for several seconds. Its so anoying!

lol, you are kidding right? as far as i know no htc device has official gingerbread yet so ... i'd say if samsung is able to produce a RC yet they are definitely on track! also i prefer a a good and tested firmware over a buggy and unoptimized one like the first 2.2 firmwares.
and yep: I'm also looking forward with joy to a fantastic 2.3 firmware. i guess they improved a lot due to the production of the nexus s. although i'd prefer a stable release of cm7 ...

No kernel or ext4 tweaks will fix the lag on our phones, i've been trying everything since day one, its hopeless. The problem isn't just the rfs filesystem, its also touchwiz.

My i9000 outperforms both my friends iphones and android devices in speed and smoothness. (ok, the iphones are a bit smoother... But it's still better than the androids)
Exept for the GPS, there is nothing wrong with the galaxy that can't be fixed by mods.
And so far, Samsung has a pretty good update record. All of their unlocked international phones have got updates as fast, or even faster than other OEM's.
Install js5 and speedmod.
Activate lagfix, and i can promis you it will kill the iphone.
And with fasterfix and GPSaids the GPS is really good to.

When all these other company's HTC included are locking down bootloaders Sammy says please make our device better. Plus the galaxy tab 2 is getting great reviews it looks like its going to be a sammy year for me .

This, & Sammy gave the dev a GSM model, which doesn't mean **** for us CDMA users, & if you don't agree then just go ask the devs in the Epic forum who are still trying their damndest to get CM7 fully running while the Captivate & Vibrant both has been fully blessed by Cyanogen hisself.

It's a promising sign but I'm not sure I'm quite convinced that Samsung is trying to change their ways. Of course, we also have no proof that HTC is going to truly unlock their bootloaders either.
My experience with 3 stock Samsung Android phones on Sprint has left a bitter taste in my mouth.
1. I had the original "Moment" from day 1. Paid $475 for it and had nothing but problems.
2. My wife has the "Transform" (I gave Samsung a mulligan for the Moment since it was 1st generation....) -- big mistake, almost as crappy as the Moment.
3. My Daughter has the "Intercept" -- got it at the same time as the Transform (so I did not have a chance to see that the Moment was more a precursor to the craptastic to come rather than a "one off" mistake.
Even without rooting and romming -- the EVO is head and shoulders above any of the Samsung phones I have seen. As far as being able to actually use it without weird things happening.
Yes....I said it --- that is the downfall of Samsung phones...."Weird things happen at a very slow pace, and even doing basic things like making a phone call or sending a text becomes a huge undertaking."
Had I not known better (owning other Android devices) -- could have sworn that Samsung was trying to make Android look like a steaming, buggy, not ready for prime time, piece of crap OS....When in fact it is not that at all.
As a last desperate measure before purchasing my EVO....I rooted and installed a custom ROM on my Moment -- and it actually was a pretty good experience to turn it into a device I could at least make phone calls on and send texts (which was worlds above stock Moment -- even though the GPS no longer worked.) So I can at least thank Samsung for forcing me to discover the world of custom roms.

How is this not good news for the end user? A headset manufacturer giving the OK to one of the best developer teams to implement a highly popular custom ROM is a bad idea? Some people will never be happy.

It might be good news if said dev recieved a CDMA phone which is what the majority of people here would purchase. It really is irrevelent because he got a GSM phone, which really changes nothing.

Official, no. Testing, yes. Samsung could easily give a CDMA developer the device, but it'll be discreet until the carrier announcement. This was a good move by Samsung, but don't forget about the Nexus One and EVO 4G. Classy move by Samsung, but nothing HTC haven't done before and more.

This ain't no Epic. SG2 marks a new era for Samsung. I've had it for 2 weeks now (with my EVO) leading up to what would have been my pending EVO 3D purchase... which will likely morph into a Sprint Within purchase at this point.
Obviously 'user experience' is highly subjective...but it seems unlikely the 3D will match this rooted, stripped SG2 experience I'm enjoying now. Fiercely fast...brilliant multimedia performance...at least compared to the 4G..

Very subjective, but I fail to agree that the 3D rooted and optimized fails to match, especially when noone has even touched the phone. The specs are too good on it not to be one of the best phones of the year, and rooted and optimized is only icing on the cake.
How is the screen on the 3d compared to a super amoled. I tried reading specs but have no idea what they mean. I just wanna be able to actually see my phone when I'm outside.

Yeah, hope your right..really do. To me it comes down to the camera quality and video quality...cause other than that the only thing it has going thats appreciatively better than my rooted gingerbread 4G!...is pixel density and that its faster.
To me the dealbreaker is how much better are its multimedia capabilities...(2D..not 3D)...cause this things (GS2) is crystalclear brilliant!
I think it's funny that Samsung can't make good software for their own phones, so they want someone else to do it for them. And for basically nothing.

My first android phone was Nexus One and after a year in December i bought Nexus S. Now i feel that i need a new phone or a tablet,right now i m little confused between samsung Galaxy s2 or Htc Sensation.
The reason i m posting is that many of you guys came from flavored to vanilla phone like Htc and galaxy. So i want to know which phone is devs favorite and has more roms and will be better for gaming and stuff.

Go do your own research about Galaxy S2 vs. Sensation. People here at these forums prefer the Nexus S over anything. We get the Nexus series because manufacturers don't have any say in anything. They simply just provide the hardware.
Not being a jerk or anything, but we shouldn't have to babysit you one by one our opinions about what phone to get when we're already enjoying the one we already have.

It's a tough question because everyone has different needs.
I have used MANY Android devices, I'm almost ashamed to admit.
I currently have the Nex S, HTC Glacier and a Motorola Xoom and I'll probably be getting the SGSII soon.
The Sensation is really nice. I have the ROM with Sense 3.0 running on my Glacier now and it's pretty sweet, but I still would prefer the SGSII without a doubt.
So it's really a YMMV situation, based entirely on your preferences, needs and wants
However, I've heard the new Samsung Galaxy 10.2 is currently regarded as the best Android tablet out now. So I hope that helps.

It's really bad when you're coming to a respective forum and people are giving their own opinions about the phone when the REAL facts about the phone itself are on Engadget. These phones are made to fit a person's personality. One phone will please one person, whereas, another will knock it down because it's simply not what they're looking for.

I just find it really rude to come here and start talking about two phones that have absolutely nothing to do with its respective forum. People here (especially Sprint) users just got the phone and it's making them have regrets in buying the NS4G because with this thread, it makes the NS seem like an obsolete device when development for the NS/NS4G is starting to boost.

Note: Going to one of those forums and asking the same thing, they will most likely side with their phone because its a biased post. Just like how I'm standing up for the Nexus S. However, it may be more informative since they ACTUALLY have the phone in their hand and can list their personal experiences with the phone rather than us providing our experiences based on our readings from tech blogs. Fair?
Quad-core phones are coming out later this year with the upcoming rumored Nexus device anyway, which will most likely be the flagship "Ice Cream Sandwich" device. The leaked roadmap for NVIDIA Tegra lists that Tegra 3 (Quad-Core 1.5GHz) will be released within this Fall.
And since the Nexus S is a Nexus device, it will be one of the first phones to get "Ice Cream Sandwich" (or whatever it will be called). Having that in mind KEEPS me on staying with Team Nexus. Because there's really no reason to go out of Team Nexus when Nexus devices are getting their updates directly from Google including a fully deoxed ROM being released in a short period of time. ESPECIALLY when these devices being released are not optimized for Dual-Core (or above) usage. It doesn't matter if it has a 8-core CPU, if the OS doesn't optimize those cores, then it really doesn't matter. That's the end of the story.
Anyway, enough of my ranting. I hope this makes you stay with Nexus devices because they are truly unique phones and people should learn to appreciate them more. We will get our updates faster than any other phone and to be honest, I don't trust any manufacturer that determines whether or not when I will get the OTA. Even still, CyanogenMod does a great job on keeping users at the highest Android OS version possible but a stock version of the latest will help. Especially when Nexus devices are un-bloated and built from AOSP for the most part.

Well the fact that Samsung gave a CM7 developer a Galaxy S2 to dev CyanogenMod meant a lot. I give Samsung more credit than they deserve regardless of how people criticize Samsung.
Motorola is just a no no.
HTC would be my second choice. I respect them for their commitment to "unlocking bootloaders." But the fact that they wanted to lock the bootloaders in their first place is shady.
Samsung doesn't really lock their bootloaders, its just fully open. And no, I'm not referring to the NS. The Galaxy S series wasn't even hard to unlock, just rename to update.zip and flash it in stock recovery.
I dont think so nexus 3 will be tegra 3 1.5 quad core so now i am thinking galaxy s2 or lg optimus 2x(g2x)

that was the main reason i came to nexus, i want to trade it only for a new nexus... this hardware race is insane! it reminds me the old times of PC: 166mhz, 233mhz, 300mhz... MMX, 3DNOW
just look for better battery life .. wichever provide u better battery..and i think almost all phone now days coming with dual core n higher ram..
if u dont really care about updates than just pick one, which looks n feel better
cuz there arent much higher upgraded features coming anymore soo 2.3 and above is all cool
SGS2 because:
Faster everything
Slimmer profile
internal storage plus micro sd
physical button on the front
not Sensation because:
Wifi Death Grip issue
Sense 3.0 = which is garbage and pure eye candy
nexus one was my first android as well, and coming from vanilla, sense > touchwiz for me. Actually, a lot of ppl prefer sense over touchwiz. thats what you should look into if youre coming from vanilla.
of course, you should look at the specs as well. i found that any hardware differences werent significant enough for me.
Even though i'm not a fan of touchwiz, i ordered the sgsii because its compatible with the network im heading to, and mainly bc it looks like samsung really brought their stuff together and put a lot of work into the phone...where as (while i'm not doubting the work put into it) the sensation comes off as merely a dual-core EVO 4g.
just my 2 cents.
I don't understand why people prefer Sense > TouchWiz.
Sense is ALL EYE CANDY.
TouchWiz, first thing that comes to mind is looking like iOS. This is true, but when you put TouchWiz launcher under the hood and use LauncherPro/ADW over it. It's actually a great skin. TouchWiz implemented new features such as the power widgets on notifications bar and added codecs to play 720p. The Camera App was amazing too.

And also, I think it's absolutely hideous. "Inspired by pebbles?" Honestly, who could even say that with a straight face. Oval phones are just... not smart.
But all in all, it's probably one "Plus" away from being stunning, but alas, combined with a pretty questionable keynote, I'd say this is overall pretty disappointing. It's still easily one of the best phones on the market, but it's now in a market populated by the HTC One X and the Huawei Ascend D XL, the former which is stunningly beautiful, and the latter has the chance to be even more specs-heavy than the S3.
tl;dr: Samsung pulled a 4s.

Nice device, no doubt.
Is it groundbreaking? Don't know yet, we'd have to see some reviews to determine that.
I will say this, development is going to be through the roof for this phone, just as it with the SGS2.

When it comes out in the USA, i dont know if im really getting it. Thats what happened when the S2 first came out. It came out around summer 2011 then a couple months later on a october, the tmobile brand t989 was released with upgraded hardware. Maybe the S3 might follow the same route.

'Quad-core' is a good marketing term for selling. Minor differences in everyday use in my opinion. You'll notice the difference if you run a benchmark.
I like all the functionality of it.... but I'd like to know from someone who knows:
Will our S2 be able to do all the cool stuff they are showing off with a software upgrade to 4.0.X ? Like the gesture functions, etc... Because our phone can already do most of the stuff they are showing, and the specs are pretty close?
Some of the features they show off will be unique to it, because the S3 uses a new version of Touchwiz that the Galaxy S2 isn't getting. Our ICS update is more a minor update, whereas the S3 gets some unique features. Kind of like HTC adding unique features to Sense 4 versus phones with Sense 3.5, even though both are on ICS.

That's touchwiz i wasn't impressed at all. It not even all that special especially since samsung didn't even bother using a15 architecture on their processor. So qualcomm will be in the lead till ti omap is released. The only noticeable feature was picture in picture and that is it. Guess ill be sticking with the nexus line because
all those features are useless. but they can be done with apps which someone will probably do in the future.
The pebbles thing made me chuckle lol

Meh. Looks nice, but I'll reserve judgment until it arrives at T-Mobile USA. We'll see if it stays the same or becomes a varient that shares nothing but the name, like this one did.

All usa versions will be the step child because no one be using exynos unless you unlock the device go on at&t. All because of lte/hspa+ on tmobile bands.

Yea that what I meant buy the international unlocked for att but again I wasn't to impressed with it so I'm leaning towards getting the note and riding it out til the next nexus.
i dont like how it looks, i also think that it is too big its almost the same size as the galaxy note. It has a 8mp camera hopefully its not the same ones they put in the galaxy s2. that being said only thing left to really know is hows the battery life.

I agree with OP. Pretty much a let down here. Minor upgrades with some gimmicks. It will be the same story all over for us nerds here who want updates. Sure it has nice specs, but development is going to be slow for 6-9 months after the next OS release for android I probably wont own it, I don't need those specs for anything. All games run perfect on dual cores.

Samsung is planning S IV to roll out in April 2013 possibly with unbreakble screen. Other features 13 mp camera picture density 441 ppi.(times of India Banaglore edition dated 7Dec2012, page18). So Note 3 may roll out in 4th quarter 2013 for which I am waiting, by that time my note 1 will be around 2 years old and I could willfully sell or give it to a family member. I think most of you will do the same thing, I shall catch up you guys there.
PS: I do not want to miss this crowd.
The best thing to do is buy one every two galaxies. I have an S2 and I'm gonna get an S4, S6 and so on.....

I think I'm gonna jump ship to the Sony Xperia Yuga,if it comes out......with cyanogenmod leaving the Galaxy and Note lines(unless Sammy decides to scrap the Exynos SoC.....which,lets face it, is not gonna happen) and Sony offering full GPL compliance(read: almost all source code is released), I'm thinking about the Yuga.
Doesn't matter about the S-Pen, don't use it anyways; just bought the phone for the screen size and a .3" decrease doesn't seem that much different to me.

I don't care if it's S13 with fantastic phone features, which also gives you a BJ in the morning. Never again a Samsung for me. Ever.

Brickbug, no source code released despite numerous promises, CM team moving out of Samsuck development.
While we all (read I) appreciate what the CM team and team Hacksung may have done, lets face it, they are a minuscule minority to Samsung. CM also does not offer anything revolutionary over what a standard device can do, (OK, so maybe the code and is cleaner and there's less bloat, but its just as easy to remove the bloat from TW), and in terms of the Galaxy note, it actually takes away some of the most useful parts.
99% of users never even root their devices, and for them, the Brickbug does not exist and never has.
It's hardly a good reason to never use another Samsung device...Especially since they really are ahead of the curve at this point.

The simple fact is we arent part of the 99% that never root their phones. We are the ones who enjoy the freedom of customizing every little aspect and squeezing every ounze of performance out. Some (like myself) can't stand touchjizz and to say that cm doesn't offer anything revolutionary is plain ignorant. The fact that Samsung isn't keeping the promises they make and continues to string us along is disgusting. I was a Samsung fanboy for years but after this ordeal I won't be buying another Samsung phone until they get their act together. Maybe cm is a miniscule minority to Samsung but there are still thousands of us who come here, to xda, to tweak, tinker and get the most out of our devices and cyanogenmod plays an enormous role in that. As xda members we look for devices with dev support, you can have the most high end phone in the world but if the devs aren't given what they need from the manufacturers then what's the point in even being here? You might as well become an iSheep. I am another who will be picking up a Sony yuga unless Samsung has their **** sorted by the time they release the gs4. For a company that's fighting apple as much as Samsung is they're starting to look more and more like them every day

I'm so grateful for the devs that have made my Note worth having, if it wasn't for them I would of upgraded a long time a go.

I don't care about brand. Only real estate. The next 5.3 to 6 inch screen phone with up to par technology is getting my money.
For the record, the Note looks terrible and build quality is even worse. I didn't buy a note 2.
The market is improving too fast these days.. Barely have time to catch up tiwht the bandwagon!

Like you said. Every odd number note is best to buy Like note1, note3, note5 so on...
Probably going to skip Samsung next time if Sony will continue their pro-development policy with Xperia Yuga phone. Don't get me wrong, CM10 runs great on my Note, but it's not nice to know some bugs will probably never be fixed because Samsung didnt keep their promise about releasing sources AGAIN. And since i hate TW-based roms, i can't stick with stock.
Anyway, Sony's TimeScape ( is this what it's called ? ) Android mod is probably the best non-aosp android build...
Well Samsung works for me. I had to root GS2 for regional font support and print screen. In GNote, I ran stock unrooted for 6 months as all that I needed were already there. Then I started exploring and flashed several ROMs. Some which are closest to Nexus version have everything in white background (eye straining). Some do not support SPen. Some had more annoying bugs than Samsung stock. So finally back to stock TW and TW is blessing. If I buy Galaxy Nexus, I will want to flash TW. When OS starts to reach maturity, having latest OS is not always required on the first day. For example - we can almost run everything in Windows XP, the same has started to hold true in Android too. And SPen is blessing, it has saved me borrowing pen from waiter and draw quick diagrams on tissue paper dozen times.
