Galaxy S III Discussion - Galaxy S III General

Personally, not amused. Didn't raise the bar the way the S2 did. US versions shafted with S4.
And also, I think it's absolutely hideous. "Inspired by pebbles?" Honestly, who could even say that with a straight face. Oval phones are just... not smart.
But all in all, it's probably one "Plus" away from being stunning, but alas, combined with a pretty questionable keynote, I'd say this is overall pretty disappointing. It's still easily one of the best phones on the market, but it's now in a market populated by the HTC One X and the Huawei Ascend D XL, the former which is stunningly beautiful, and the latter has the chance to be even more specs-heavy than the S3.
tl;dr: Samsung pulled a 4s.

I actually think is a very nice release!
Cant wait for it to come to the US --

Nice device, no doubt.
Is it groundbreaking? Don't know yet, we'd have to see some reviews to determine that.
I will say this, development is going to be through the roof for this phone, just as it with the SGS2.

When it comes out in the USA, i dont know if im really getting it. Thats what happened when the S2 first came out. It came out around summer 2011 then a couple months later on a october, the tmobile brand t989 was released with upgraded hardware. Maybe the S3 might follow the same route.

S3 Hardware: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02nIoynGqYg&feature=related

'Quad-core' is a good marketing term for selling. Minor differences in everyday use in my opinion. You'll notice the difference if you run a benchmark.

I like all the functionality of it.... but I'd like to know from someone who knows:
Will our S2 be able to do all the cool stuff they are showing off with a software upgrade to 4.0.X ? Like the gesture functions, etc... Because our phone can already do most of the stuff they are showing, and the specs are pretty close?

Some of the features they show off will be unique to it, because the S3 uses a new version of Touchwiz that the Galaxy S2 isn't getting. Our ICS update is more a minor update, whereas the S3 gets some unique features. Kind of like HTC adding unique features to Sense 4 versus phones with Sense 3.5, even though both are on ICS.
-the ultimate black dragon-

If the tmobiles version gets turned into the red headed stepchild like the s2 did with changing the processors I'm just gonna go with the note or jump ship to att..

That's touchwiz i wasn't impressed at all. It not even all that special especially since samsung didn't even bother using a15 architecture on their processor. So qualcomm will be in the lead till ti omap is released. The only noticeable feature was picture in picture and that is it. Guess ill be sticking with the nexus line because
all those features are useless. but they can be done with apps which someone will probably do in the future.

The pebbles thing made me chuckle lol

Meh. Looks nice, but I'll reserve judgment until it arrives at T-Mobile USA. We'll see if it stays the same or becomes a varient that shares nothing but the name, like this one did.

Yea that what I meant buy the international unlocked for att but again I wasn't to impressed with it so I'm leaning towards getting the note and riding it out til the next nexus.

i dont like how it looks, i also think that it is too big its almost the same size as the galaxy note. It has a 8mp camera hopefully its not the same ones they put in the galaxy s2. that being said only thing left to really know is hows the battery life.
the next nexus will hopefully be a bit better

I actually love it!
But it only has HSPA +21
No HSPA +42 for us TMO users?
WTF ?

I agree with OP. Pretty much a let down here. Minor upgrades with some gimmicks. It will be the same story all over for us nerds here who want updates. Sure it has nice specs, but development is going to be slow for 6-9 months after the next OS release for android I probably wont own it, I don't need those specs for anything. All games run perfect on dual cores.

What's your thoughts on the upcoming Galaxy S II

I ask this question as a current Vibrant owner from the day it came out. I have seen all that Samsung has done with its first line of Galaxy S phones and so I'm not sure if all the new technology is going to be worth the upcoming headaches. Its easier to get a working ROM from the community rather than deal with official Samsung updates.
If you feel the same way I do, do you feel like the Vibrant is the last Samsung device you'll ever buy?
I'm just curious and it might help me make a decision on buying any upcoming devices from Samsung. Also since I've learned that the new Sidekick is going to be a Samsung device, I'm already depressed about that one.

I will definitely be upgrading if possible. I love the vibrant, but I'm not sure if it will ever see 2.4. I remember reading somewhere that 2.4 will utilize hardware acceleration for the ui, I'm really looking forward to that.
This will be my next phone love the phone............
I'm currently trying to decide if I am going to upgrade to it or hold off for something else. I think it just depends on what else comes out at MWC and when the release date will be on the S II.

Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.
http://galaxys2.samsungmobile.com/html/specification.html
I bought the galaxy s cause it had the most powerful cpu in the bunch + screen. The s2 = better screen + 1gb ram + dual core processor that's better than the hummingbird and the mali400 gpu is way better than current sgx540. Overall, it'll be the most powerful device in terms of hardware, i'll find some way to afford one!!
But yes, i'm pissed about the updates, wish they'd just release the source for everything and let the community do it if they don't want to.
Sent from my SXY-T959
It's not about buying it or not. That's a sure buy for me.
It's about when it'll be available on the T-Mo network. T-Mobile has its own 3G frequency(1700?) making buying a smartphone without this feature(i.e., that's not OEMed for T-Mo) a hard decision.
Im buying the first HSPA+, 4.3 inch Android phone T-Mo puts out. If this is it then ill be upgrading to this.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I don't know... it is going to be sooooo expensive unless they subsidize it on T-Mo. Right now you can get a decent Vibrant off craigslist for $250 off contract. That's pretty unbeatable. I doubt I'll be getting one of these for at least a year.
i prob wont end up getting it, samsung ruined their phones for me!

Never again. Fed up with Samsung and their wannabe-software.
Concentrate on what you know; hardware.
Im kind of up in the air...cool comes with 2.3 but 2.3 isn't that great that's why 2.4 is out in couple months to fix what issues 2.3 has and to add features 2.3 should have had if it wasn't rushed.
So who knows when it will get 2.4
If i do decided to get im getting a real galaxy s 2 and not from carrier one thing to wait from Samsung another to wait for tmobile on top of it
Depends on what HTC has available on T-Mobile, if somehow HTC puts out a competing phone it will be a tossup, but will come down to the screen size and how well SLCD holds up against SAMOLED

Getting a Windows Phone. Tired of dealing with manufacturer skins or crippled Nexus phones (i.e. Nexus S).
Also, why do people put up with the high rate at which Android Manufacturers cannibalize their devices.
Vibrant 4G may have good download speeds but who will want it if T-Mobile gets a Galaxy S II Variant - the same way some people are getting Nexus S due to the Vibrant's issues?
That's 4 new phones announced since the Vibrant was released... 6 months or so? And I'm ignoring it's sister phones on the ohter 3 major carriers and phones like the Continuum on Verizon...
It's hard for these non-Nexus devices to keep value when manufacturers are releasing new phones at such breakneck paces, and it makes it hard to commit to purchasing anything, since the chances of a better phone being released so soon is so high.
There's a reason why iPhones and even Windows phones are selling for more on eBay and CL than even high end Android phones...

The fanbois are running out of excuses. I wonder if they'll claim Android isn't optimized for Tegra II this time, like they did with the Hummingbird.
The issue was always Samsung's RFS and crappy TouchWiz. Why buy something with TouchWiz on it, and I wouldn't rule out RFS, either...
Also, is it just me or does that phone have some odd choices of pre-loaded applications... Vlingo, for example...
Looks like an iPhone 4, though.
I really wish they would get rid of the chrome and round out the phone little
like the NS but still looks nice

According to the leaked VZW roadmap, verizon is getting the phone sometime in may. If samsung can redeem themselves from the froyo debacle, I would consider this.

It doesn't make much sense for VZW to release the Droid Charge, and then this a month later. Plus, I'm guessing each US carrier will make alterations to this like they did with the original GS line. That would push a release back to the summer at the very earliest. Just my .02
cant wait till it comes out!! IMO Sammy phones rock, even without 2.2.1 the Fascinate is freakin awesome, I can only imagine how much better the sgs2 will be! As long as it does come with Bing on Vzn I'm buying this as soon as it drops!! LTE 2x core sammy phones on the way!!

This is the International version much like the Galaxy S 9000 vs the i500 that we have. Essentially ours is gimped as compared to the 9000 and likewise our LTE version might be losing some features.
However, this looks nice. Problem I do see is what specific chip. So far Netflix and Sony's next media peice (Playstation Suite) will only work with Tegra2 chips and it doesn't sound like this phone has the Tegra2.
Other than that, this phone looks sweet and I can't wait to see what LTE Verizon's version will be like. Though I'm still considering an eventual HTC as they are better standard UI and better at updating.
I don't see any reason to opt for this. Dual core is a plus on paper, but IMO not that huge of a one for me (nothings really taking advantage of it yet, and it's not like the single core processors were slow as is). I also don't like the larger size (the Fascinate is at the high end of what I think of as reasonably sized... the 4.3" phones I've seen so far look comically oversized... amazing what .3" will do!), and Samsung+Verizon will probably make sure we get it running Eclair just because they like us so much.
Next time I buy a phone, I'm gonna first look to see how mature the mods are for it first, and make sure there aren't widespread issues with any of the hardware in it not working (GPS still doesn't work for me!).
F Samsung to high hell!

How is our phone gimped compared to the i9000 outside of the software department? We are one of 2? phones that have a LED flash for the camera. We don't have a FFC, but then again, most of the SGS phones released in the US don't have one either, so it is a US thing, not an i500 thing.
Samsung is nice, but they suck on updates. After Omnia and now Fascinate, I doubt I will get another Sammy anytime soon.
I'm quite satisfied with this phone, since we've gotten 2.2. I know, it's not official, but we have it, thanks to the great crew that has worked on it. Imo, it has the best screen going, and you can't beat the profile. It says that the S2 will be coming with 2.3, and the screen and profile are only going to get better. If it's a couple months, or the middle of summer, I plan on getting the S2 when it arrives.
I bought the SF launch day. I will not be getting the SGS2 on launch day. Going to wait and see how the dev community is as well as how Sammy supports or doesn't support this baby. Hardware is stellar but thats only part of the equation as we all learned with the SF
All 3 of samsung's firmware engineers have been working on future products like this instead of supporting the galaxy S I. As such, they all should get kicks in the butts.

Yes they have sucked ass in the update department... but the hardware is pretty nice. The screen is amazing on these phones. I have had to much to drink a few times and dropped it with no consequence besides some minor Knicks and scratches. Gorilla glass is very durable. I'd definetely get one if I could afford it.

I just jumped ship from the Fascinate to the Thunderbolt a few days ago. Rooted and have been experimenting.
After getting a sense of the Thunderbolt and putting it side by side with the Fascinate, its not as dominant as I would have expected. The Fascinate's SAMOLED screen is just substantially better than the Thunderbolt's S-LCD. Its not even close really. Also, the latest gen Snapdragon + Adreno 205....doesn't seem as snappy as the Fascinate SoC. Fascinate definitely has better graphics. Very subtle stutters on the Thunderbolt after testing a few ROMs and Kernels. Also, its certainly a matter of opinion, but the Thunderbolt is just a tad too big compared with the Fascinate. They have the power button on top like an iPhone, and the way I would naturally grip the phone puts the power button barely out of reach of my index finger. I have to do a very small phone adjust in my hand to allow my index finger to get on top of the power button, but the Fascinate's 4 inch screen is about as large as I would imagine it could get for it to require no movement of the phone in the palm while operating it, which is preferable I think.
On the other hand - Verizon's LTE network is stupid fast. NYC with its saturated 3G networks -- the LTE network is like coming up for air after nearly drowning. Its rock solid everywhere I've been, almost like ubiquitous WiFi. When you really think about it, even the best Dual-Core Cortex A9 phones on ATT can't really touch a Cortex A8 experience on WiFi. The network makes an enormous difference and that can't be stressed enough.
The Thunderbolt is sexier than the Fascinate with its screen off. I don't really care about the kickstand, but the feel and heft is a welcome change from the Fascinate. Although not a graphics beast, it is by no means a slouch. The UI is very snappy, and I'll be very curious once CM7/AOSP gets released.
Thats the final thing about the Thunderbolt that I think is worth mentioning. The Thunderbolt forum is buzzing. Lots of devs, people are gearing up for CM7 nightlies/crackflashing. Not to say this forum wasn't Fantastic, but the Thunderbolt, and HTC in general, seem to have a slightly more robust community. I'm not at all upset with my decision to switch, but the Fascinate is by NO MEANS old hardware right now, in fact using the Thunderbolt makes me appreciate how good Samsung was on the hardware side.

That is a great question. I bought a used Fascinate to hold me over, and to learn the Android system. I am hoping that later in the year I can get something with dual core and LTE. But I also don't want to give up battery life. So this may not be possible.
I like Android, but have a bad opinion of Samsung compared to my previous multiple HTC WinMo devices.
So I want:
For the OS: Android, likely not Microsoft, never Apple.
Manufacturer: HTC, maybe Moto, Samsung is low on the list.
Carrier: Verizon...........period.. What I need it for, other choices fail.
Dual core would be nice, but not at the expensive of a lot of battery life.
I want LTE. Not badly, but there is not much reason to throw away a 2 year contract and not get it.
The Thunderbolt is almost it, and may BE it, for me. Maybe I really don't want dual core just yet anyway. The new SGS II is probably nice, but I'm sure I would be returning in to Verizon as it would have the same hardware weaknesses that I see in the Fascinate.
So I'm waiting it out for now to see what else comes along. Until I smash this P.O.S. Fascinate against the ground and I'm forced to decide.
It's going to be really tough for me to buy another Samsung phone. The internal guts of the Fascinate are awesome (which is why I bought it), but the lack of support and poorly written code is a real let-down. I'm definitely going to explore other phone manufacturers and carriers to see how things compare. If another network suits my daily needs, I'll definitely switch... possibly to T-Mobile given their upcoming line-up of phones. I'm not excited about the possible AT&T merger, but I definitely won't be locking myself into any contracts in the near future. Android progresses way too quickly to get locked into anything longer than 1 year - and those contracts are going away.
As much as most would hate to hear it, if the iPhone had Google Navigation, a universal micro-USB port and maybe removable internal storage + battery... I would consider it. I doubt those things would ever happen, so no iPhone for me. An MIUI-compatible Android would be much better anyways.
Galaxy S2. Samsung is improving. I mean, GB is rolling out to the i9000 before any other phone. Their hardware is superior. With the Galaxy S2, it's EXT4. AND, the bootloader is gonna be open. It seems that they ARE listening to the consumers. Though I'm angry that we still don't have 2.2, I blame Verizon for that more than Samsung.

Nexus Prime dues end of OCTOBER

http://androidcommunity.com/nexus-prime-support-page-up-and-in-shambles-at-samsung-20110908/
Nexus Prime Support Page up and in shambles at Samsung
As I noted yesterday when we got word of a code hidden at Samsung’s mobile webspace, the Nexus line is one that, when you get any new information on it at ALL, you’ve gotta report it. You NEED to report it because when it comes to Android, there’s basically nothing more exciting for those who love purity than a Google-certified vanilla flavoring of a version of Android OS, and in this case, it means the launching of the next big platform, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. What we’ve got today is a rather preliminary looking support page for the device aka GT-I9250, this being otherwise known as the Nexus Prime.
This device is being shown here in a broken-down placeholder of a page which, when it comes down to it, doesn’t show us much of anything. On the other hand, there is a new set of supposed factoids this morning courtesy of a tipster speaking with GSM Arena. Take the following with a grain of salt, of course, but note that these are all possibilities:
“For one, our tipster says that the final name of the next Google flagship is Samsung Galaxy Nexus rather than Nexus Prime. It will have a 4.65″ screen of HD resolution – not 4.5″ WVGA. … screen is curved just like the Nexus S screen … device itself will be very thin – 8.8mm – and have a metal chassis … the launch date – at the end of October (right on the Ice Cream Sandwich schedule)” – tipster
Note again that for basically any other device we wouldn’t be as apt to publish a third-hand unnamed source like this, but these specs ring enough bells that they’re certainly inside the realm of reality. Keep your ears open and let’s get this device out of the closet sooner than later!
ALSO as a bonus, here’s our favorite well-played comment on the matter thus far:
“Galaxy Nexus is like naming your kid Ricky Bobby. Galaxy Prime would make more sense and sounds a lot better.” – Kenshiro
This man speaks truth!

Idk about that...last night there was the XML leak saying its actually just the same resolution as the Vibrant is currently, but with a 4.65 screen. I have not seen anything today saying it will have an HD resolution.

I talked to a Tmobile cc rep and she told me that the galaxy S2 is due early next month, she told me low key because they don't have prices yet

Google and Samsung should find a way to PUMP up Pixels in this jumbo screen otherwise they should jump back to IPS display to satisfy custumer . Samsung should move to new laser-based method, Laser Induced Thermal Imaging (LITI) from the currently-used shadow-mask method (FMM) to pump up the pixel density.
Point well taken--best to wait an extra month to get 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Nexus Prime/Nexus Galaxy then to get 2.3 Gingerbread Galaxy S2. Also you will get updates directly from Google instead of waiting for TMO/Samsung (some say its TMO fault the Vibrant hasn't received Gingerbread, others say Sammy, depends whom you ask).
I have a terrible feeling this phone will be Verizon exclusive.... Ready to ditch my vibrant.

I was ready to ditch my vibrant to until I tried miui, its like a new phone and don't think I can ever go back to stock. You should give it a shot unless you already have.

You're right. Even though battery life on MIUI is nowhere compared to 2.2 but I also find my way back to MIUI .

When you say that battery life is nowhere compared to 2.2, on average how many hours are we talking in a normal day?
I use Toxic 8 and juice defender to limit the amount of data when my screen is off, and I'm getting around 20 or so hours. It's usually around 14-16 when I'm using it a little more during the day, but I don't do that as much anymore.
I've been wanting to try Miui for awhile now, but both the GPS and battery life have been talked to death on these boards. Just curious what your personal experiences have been since using it?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Lol, ill simplify this for you...
Note, not coming to USA anytime soon, and when it does it wont be on tmo bands.
Gs2, the Hercules more than likely will have the same snapdrogon that's in the sensation. While nice, IMHO is not as good as the exynos in original sgs 2, and the omap 4 that will be in the prime. Also, because of this seems to me to be more of a lateral move from vibrant than a forward one.
Nexus, is the way to go. It will be stock android so waiting for updates wont happen again, also it will have top hardware and more than likely an HD screen which will look amazing.
Just wait for the nexus unless you absolutely need a phone now. It will be well worth the wait.

hey guys currently
have omnia i910 really old now.
my provider is getting the s2 with 1.5ghz 4.5 screen - Telus
Should I just opt for the s2 or wait another month for the nexus?
Really need a new phone. Phone works but having a lot of service issue the phone been dropped one to many times.

Looking for advice for my next phone

It seems that Cyanogenmod will not be bringing their next generation (ICS) to the Vibrant. While I really like the Vibrant, perhaps it is time to think about moving on.
Are there any recommendations for where I should be looking. Here would be my considerations:
- I like the hardware features (screen size and resolution and 16GB memory)
- I want the phone to have full Cyanogenmod support
- Cyanogenmod support should include a good gps and battery life (both of which are shortcomings for the Vibrant)
- I need to stick with TMobile
- And, I don't want the phone to cost an arm and a leg
Any thoughts, ideas, advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Nexus. Nothing else needs to be said. But if it does not come to to tmobile, I would lean towards HTC, they seem to be able to at least update phones.

I agree. Nexus should be #1 on your list if you want support and like the Vibrant. The HTC Amaze just came out on T-Mobile and has impressive hardware specs and is on the list from HTC to get the ICS update. It also has a 8MP camera with instant picture taking like the Nexus. I would imagine that Cyanogenmod will put out a mod for it. Though any new phones will need some time to see if CM will support it.
The Galaxy Nexus is a pentaband phone, so even if T-Mobile doesn't get it, it'll still run on their network. I normally tell people to get the phone that they like the best. Not everyone is an uber android geek. I told a buddy of mine to get the Droid Charge, he loves the thing. If he waited for the Galaxy Nexus, he'd be disappointed. It's personal preference.
It sounds like you like to tinker. People that like to tinker need a Nexus device because they'll always be the ones with the most support and the smoothest Android experience. I love my Vibrant, it was my first Android device. I'll probably always hold onto it as a backup phone with Stock Froyo + WiFi Calling, but in the future I'll most likely stick to Nexus devices.
Decide what you care about the most and less about hardware/appearance. If you want a custom experience more than what a manufacturer's android experience is, then go for a Nexus with optimized hardware. There are a lot of really nice, very cool phones out there but in terms of longevity of future up to date use, Nexus wins 10 times out of 10.
Also, I wouldn't buy a device based on the promise of updates. Carriers may intend to update a device, but several things can hinder that intention. In all reality, if an upgrade to ICS doesn't come until next August, well, what's the point? Remember, for a long time it looked like Samsung assumed that T-Mobile would want the Vibrant updated, and it didn't happen. There have several devices through the years that were suppose to be updated and never were. Always buy a phone for what it is, not what a carrier says it should be.
Regarding Galaxy Nexus being penta band, doesn't it mean only GSM is supported in 5 bands and not 3G? Why would Samsung build AWS band in a world phone for couple of carriers.
tmobil sgs2
What do you think of the T-Mobile sgs2? Will it get ice or will it end up being forgotten like the vibrant? Seems to me the T-Mobile sgs2 is more powerful than the nexus hardware wise
Sent from my T959 using xda premium
Higher specs are irrelevant. I'm sure it needs them to push TouchWiz. There is one device ICS is optimized for, and that's the Galaxy Nexus.
1) It's not Samsung that will abandon the SGS, it's T-Mobile
2) If you chase spec sheets you'll be replacing devices every 3-6 months.
Also, manufacturers are going to want to want their frameworks on top of ICS. There's no reference point for how ICS will look or run with TouchWiz, Sense or Motoblur on top of it. You have to go with what you know, not what you think you can assume.

Your advice is based on a "think" without any leak information of a virtual phone
nexus or tmobil sgs2! stay away from amaze
iPhone 5 will be my next device. too tempted by androids openness to play around with all the roms out there. iPhone will take that choice away and simplify things. also would play nicer with my Mac. my MacBook hates the vibrant it seems.
