Shutdown and reboot solutions for stick computers
Hi Wakkaday,
I had exactly the same concern with my MK808. I used "Extended Controls" by JUSTBIT SRL.
I'd purchased this a couple of years ago for my HTC Desire. Works fine with the Android stick - I've created a 2x1 widget containing a reboot and shutdown icons.
Warning: There's no warning once you've clicked the reboot icon, but with the Shutdown option you do get a "yes/no" option.
You have to power off and on again to boot up again after a shutdown but that's no problem I guess.
Hope this helps.

If you have a keyboard attached you can type Ctrl-Alt-Del to turn it back on. I do this all the time with my MX1.

can you install roms with a broken power button?

hi all,
as the title says, am i am to still install custom roms if my power button is dead?
wat work around can i do to install them etc?
You can probably use ROM Manager to install roms as it will automatically reboot you into recovery.
I think it would depend on if you were rooted before your power button died. Mine is dead, but I'm not rooted. My 2.1.1 update installed on its own.
Couple of off-the-topic questions, but;
1 - How do you turn the phone on without a power button (if you pull the battery, is that "the end"?)
2 - Why haven't you returned your phone under warranty?
...just curious.

Turn on from power off is plug in charger, wait for charging light then remove and reinsert battery.
I use lockgo to wake my phone from screen off.
I'm waiting..... over a week now for a new phone to be sent to me.
Use 'quick boot' app to get to recovery, to install updates.

Epic Won't Turn ON

I know they are a lot of Topics about this, I have tried everything (I think), here is my problem.
The Epic is stuck at the Battery Charging Icon. It will not Power On, It will not go to Download Mode, and it will not go to Recovery.
What are my other options, since the phone is not following commands, is not rooted and is not activated?
Thanks guys

If you have the battery out it should not react that way. With the battery out hold the 1 key on the keyboard and plug into a USB port and press the power button while still holding the 1 key.
It shows me the battery icon and then goes away, shows again then goes away...

Only power and the 1 key on the keyboard will get you into download mode. Sounds like you will have to take into the Sprint store to diagnose at this point. If you can't get into download mode, you are screwed. You can try leaving the battery out for a couple of hours.

Where did you get it? Sounds like you got a bad phone. Return it. It is still under Samsung warranty so you can send it to them.
Have you tried another battery and see if the phone boots?

This is due to the thin wiring harness being damaged that connects the keyboard to the Motherboard.. It can be replaced at your local Sprint repair store.

This happen when I bricked my phone. Unplugged my phone and took the battery out for about a day and then afterward pressed the power button about 30 times and I got lucky and my phone went into download mode after I pressed 1 and the power button. The key is discharging your phone's memory and reflashing your phone with stock rom. I had to reflash my phone a lot of times before my flash stuck.

Ok. it turns on that is good. Now turn off the phone hold down the power button and the 1 key on the keyboard. This should get you to download mode. Pressing the power button is useful to get your phone to powerup and now that it is powered up you can now flash the stock rom on your phone thru odin. Reflashing stock rom is the key to fixing your phone.
But the power buttom is not working, I already give it a hard reset and the phone was not rooted, you think that is gonna fix the buttom? I thought it was an hardware issue.. what do you thing?

Guys...I have a quick question...well maybe 2...
(1) so my phone is having the same problem. Working one minute, then not the next and I can't get the phone to boot up at all. Is there any other way I could get it to boot...through USB to the PC, anything?
(2) So I got it into download mode, and it completed. Did that download everything from the phone to my pc? If so, where is that data and how will I get it back to my new phone?
Sorry for the stupid questions, but I haven't dove into things like this with the Samsung yet. Thanks!!!

Can't press Power button (hardware)

Hey
My power button seems to have failed on me. I press it but nothing happens and I leave the phone alone and it press itself. Something inside must have failed
Can I fix this myself? Not sure if I have a warranty on this phone anymore (never unscrewed but rooted and has CM running on it)
Hm can't say much. Did you drop it? Could there be dust and pocket lint in there preventing button movement?

Open your battery cover, does it say VOID?

Seems like delayed response. Not a dead power button. Check how much ram is left on ur phone.
Sent from my Desire Z via XDA App
Strange, I just had this happen to me the other day! It ended up being dust/lint...
hopefully that's all it is for you as well!
My power button is also acting up. When I hold it down while the phone is on nothing happens. When I pull the battery and put it back in it turns itself on. It is rooted running the Andromadus Alpha v5, previously running ILWT CM7 where it was doing the same thing but I didn't figure it out before flashing the ICS ROM. What would happen if I took it to a T-mobile store?
Happening exactly the same, button doesn't react completely and if i remove battery start up automatically. But i drowned the phone before so probably thats why...
Happened to me. I ended up just remapping my trackpad button to the power button.
How you did it?

The symptoms sound to me like the power button is stuck down, either the plastic button itself or the actual switch contacts underneath it.
Seems like it has auto fixed itself...........for now.
I edited the curcial-oj.ko file or whatever. Changed the key binding to POWER instead of trackpad click.
You can use adb to pull/push the file from /system/usr/keylayout. Reboot after pushing
keep in mind this only affects the android os, so you still need to be able to turn on your phone without using the power button (can't use tp to power on phone)

Power Button

No more reboots since the new update. But the power button doesn't work anymore. I have to use the docking station to turn the TF101 on and a app to turn it off.

Is it going in and out?
Did you drop it recently?
My bezel was bent out of shape from being dropped onto the bottom left corner and yesterday I took it off to bend it back in shape. When I put it back on, power button wasn't set properly, so just popped it back off and back on again and it works just fine.
It's fairly easy to do. Just remove the two T5 torx screws by the charging port, then pull out and up on the bezel (some used a guitar pick or some plastic piece to pry it out) all the way around the device and it comes right off. Then to put it back on, just put it over the device and simply push it back in and it'll click back in place.
The button works fine and I never dropped it.
If my TF is on and I get a dark screen I can use the button to turn it on.
But I can't turn it off with the button.
If my TF is sleeping for a few hours, the button can't turn it on, I have to use the dock.
The funny thing I can reproduce this behavior over and over. First I was thinking its the button, but for me it seems to be a software issue.

Does anybody has a idea how to do this, when the power button is not responding?

If you root it you could use terminal emulator, su [enter] reboot [enter]... try rooting with viper mod, at least you could turn it on and off with terminal emulator... not sure what the command for shut down is, power off maybe? Sure someone knows it...
power down command
Under *nix 'shutdown -P' (or '-p' under *BSD except OSX) should power down the system.

JUST ROOT IT.
or use the command "adb reboot"
Adb reboot says demon not active and nothing happens.
Do I need to be a superuser or any permission to do that?

Do other adb commands work?
And why don't you just friggin root already? You know it takes less than a minute right?
I don't agree with Horndroid much, nor do I share his animus about your not rooting, but I must say that having your device rooted is SOOOO easy, and totally reversible, and would make all of this 100% easier for both the community to help you troubleshoot, and for you to do what we need you to do to help us troubleshoot..for example having emulator terminal access or ADB control of your device. For the latter you don't NEED root, but it makes things SOOO MUCH EASIER. So yeah, just root already...
I'm experiencing the same thing. After the latest update, my power button doesn't work correctly.
Power button does not work TF101
I have the same issue since latest android update. Have all latest firmware etc and it is a brand new TF101.
Don't want to root. Anyone know an app to shut down this thing?
Perhaps Asus will include a power off/sleep soft key in the settings/bottom bar section for future releases...
Strange

ICS (I think) has Widgets for regular reboot and to turn off if your button doesn't work or you don't like using the button. [Sorry, I just realized that the icons came from an app called Quick Boot (reboot) that does require root to work]
So after you root and install that app - Just go to apps, (where all the icons are- top right of home screen) then Widgets tabs at top, swipe around and you'll see several buttons with lightening bolts labelled for the various options including both power off and reboot. (At least in Revolution HD ICS ROM.) I never even tried vanilla stock ICS. I have been on Revolution since Honeycomb. When ICS came out I waited a few days for the Revolution version to come out.

Turn off the device(Hold the power button for about 10sec) if it's on. Now hold all three hardware buttons(Power, volume UO & Down) togather till the google logo shows up, and this will tur your device on into fastboot mode. Now you should be able to to find your devece from your PC(if driver installed). If you ment "Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit" by "WUG" than you probably want to use Flash stock + Unroot (Can't boot up).

Thanks I tried this. When I try to turn it off it immediately reboots. Tried holding the 3 buttons when this occurs, but the result is still the dead droid with no command under it. The screen where you can select reboot recovery, bootloader never comes up. Confirmed fastboot isn't working.
Any other ideas?
