Has anyone noticed that the Galaxy Note is not as fast as it should be? I compared it to a Galaxy S II and the SII was just buttery smooth in terms of speed compared to the Note. The more I played around with the SII the more I noticed the speed and smoothness difference, and it confused me because the Note has a faster processor so it leaves me wondering why the Note is slower.
EDIT: I don't know if anyone else has noticed but there seems to be a very slight lag between input and the phone responding, for nearly everything. From swiping/scrolling to opening up apps, there just seems to be a bit of lag. The SII does not have this, that I can see. Everything is almost instant on it, as soon as you give input to the SII it responds.
Also, for those of you who are lucky enough to have upgraded to 2.3.6, is there a noticeable difference in terms of general speed and smoothness?

Same i observed as well with d demo piece kept in the shop.
Note is bit lagging than the galaxy s2.
Please answer the question. Did firmware update 2.3.6 improved performance?
Can ICS update make it as smooth as s2 or nexus?

Sorry but I have to disagree. I would say my Note is buttery smooth, insanely quick & responsive...
I've never owned the previous Galaxy S2 but have tried it in the shop and it's no way any quicker, infact it was choppy at times...
I take it it depends what apps you are running since certain apps are buggy and cause problems such as the device being sluggish at times?
My note has never lagged or been slow. I'm running the stock launcher. I tried others but did not like them.

i have not yet bought it, yesterday for the first time i saw a demo piece.
Dont know why but i found it bit laggy. Maybe beacuse the expectations with which i went there.

I still got 2.3.5 I'm very picky about speed in my phone, one thing I have noticed is that whenever memory gets really full the device suffers, say for example you launch the default browser and it's choppy, just try this: launch the task manager and do a clear memory from the ram tab.relauncb the browser and compare the speed, lighting fast!
I belive that it somehow loses the hardware acceleration at one point, so next time you guys try one specially at a demo stand, just clear the ram and give it a go.
Input lag is something I haven't noticed, what's more typing using SwiftKey is truly an experience! Zero lag and lighting speed! So I wouldn't worry much about it I'm pretty sure it has more to do with the early stage of the firmware than the lack of hardware to do it.
I truly belive speed is not an issue on this device,it's by no means perfect but it's definitely an experience using this screen with this power under the hood
Also I totally agree about the underrated s-pen people still don't realise that this is not just a piece of plastic with a fine tip, the pen is not crappy one like the horrible stylus on windows mobile phones, this pen uses a magnetic technology developed by wacom, what this means is a mix between accuracy an speed of capacitive touch also let's not forget that it can detect and separate between a normal finger press and pen press it had the potential of doing mouse hovering, not yet implemented on gingerbread drivers, also it finally brings pressure sensitive to the artist so it truly can be used as a sketched on the go!

The only reason S2 is faster is because it has a laughable super low res WVGA display. Low pixel counts = faster rendering time.

I just updated to DTB PDA KK9 and it feels smoother. Launcher Pro is not stuttering as it was. Battery life infinitely better. Still 50% after a long 16hr day of quite heavy use as opposed to 15% after 8hrs.

Probably because it was a demo unit.
I'm running exact same setup on both SGS2 and the Note (Launcher Pro, Widget Locker, etc) and SGS2 definitely is noticeably smoother than the Note in UI operations

ever since i use Android im kind of annoyed by the responsiveness of the tochscreen. Even with state of the art smartphones like the S3 (ICS version) there is substantial lag. (compared for instance to an iphone)
I was really excited when JellyBean was announced because as it seems, it addresses the issue.
However when i tried an S3 with JellyBean i still felt the lag.
My question is whether the Nexus 4 actually matches the Iphone in responsiveness.
(I do not mean the stuttering when opening for instance the app drawer, i mean the pure relation of the finger touching the device and the quickness of the response of the device.)

It uses the same new technology as the iPhone 5 which brings the touchpanel closer to the front glass meaning responsiveness should be significantly better. It's called In-Cell Touch display if you want to Google it.
You'll get a real answer when the phone comes out. Or check video reviews. We know as much as you do at this point.

The thing is, this input lag issue is very rarely adressed. It seems to me as if most poeple dont even notice it. It may be that im kinda picky there but its definitely a very important feature for me...
As the device has been released I would appreciate someone talking about the mentioned issue, who actually posseses the phone.

lol... that's just not true. It helps viewing angles, but has absolutely no effect on responsiveness.
The thing is, It could be or could not be,I think its just what peoples definition of smoothness and response is. Never know until the phones out. IMO

Well for me the scale is definitely the iphone. (even still the 3G when scrolling homescreens) Also top notch Windows Phones offer very good responsiveness.

I guess it would be better for you to stay with iPhone.

iPhone relies on a system that basically delivers all or much of the available resources to the graphical interface when scrolling, which slows down or stops whatever else the phone is doing at the time (ie stops loading a web page when you start scrolling or momentarily pauses a download). This, along with a very strong GPU, is much of the reason for the smooth interface. (note: this info was taken from an interview with a Google employee, probably about a year or less ago. Could be outdated, but I believe it's still true...)
4.1 ramped up graphics rendering FPS to 60fps. This, a long with a strong GPU, S4 Pro processor and (mainly) 2 gigs of ram should result in an incredibly smooth UI. Also, the curved glass on the edges of the screen have been noted to give a much smoother feel to scrolling, whether it's a placebo effect or not will just have to be determined over time.
Long story short...yeah, this thing should be smooth as butter (pun intended)
Also iOS is more optimized since its on for few devices.

actually the big main reason for smoothness of ios vs android is that...every single application (basically everything) runs on virtual machines on the android unlike ios.. so it is true that the beefier the hardware the smoother the device..and thats y ios is able to run smooth even with lesser hardware..

I have a Nexus S (awaiting a 16GB N4) and I can tell you that Jellybean offered a tremendous improvement in smoothness.
As for the lack of improvement with the S3 and Jelly Bean, do keep in mind that is not "stock" Jellybean, Samsung may have avoided using any of the "project butter" code for their own GPU rendering.. Only Nexus devices are guaranteed the advertised improvements listed by Google, once an OEM touches there's no guarantee.
Only the framerate is high. There is MASSIVE input lag of 100-200ms on every Android device. As evidenced in every video of the Nexus 4 the screen lags behind your finger by 1 inch or more when swiping. This makes it feel extremely sluggish and unresponsive in apps like Facebook and games like Canabalt are unplayable.
I noticed this too when I first started messing around with my N4.
A test I like to do is use the calculator, and see how many numbers I could hit before they would be highlighted (which I assume means the device starts registering the command). For some reason I was getting 2 (almost 3) punches before the device would see it. On my Wildfire S and my iPod Touch the input lag was never this bad.
Amazingly, I actually found a solution. I don't remember if I turned it on myself or if it came on by default, but my phone had the "Magnification gestures" on. You can find them in the "Accessibility" settings. I turned it off, and BAM! The input lag has practically disappeared. I don't know why it was doing that or how it's related, but this has effectively fixed it for me. There may still be a slight input lag, but it's small enough that I can ignore it. Before it was easily over 500 ms.

I've made sure that's off on every Android device I've tested. The input lag is still considerably worse than the iPhone.
As a big Samsung smartphone fan, I was hugely disappointed with the S4. Micro stutters and lag EVERYWHERE it drove me crazy.
I was really REALLY hoping the Note 3 with the S800 powerhouse will remedy the lag, according to the many videos so far of the device it seems crazy but I can still see some micro stuttering going on. WTF Samsung!?
My Note 2 was literally lag and micro stutter free, is it too much to ask for your "Next big thing" to perform the same?
I have my fingers crossed that the final software will give a smooth buttery user experience, if not I'm jumping ship for reals.. you know what they say, fool me twice......
I am hoping the 3GB of RAM help this and eventually root happens so we can remove the bloat :fingers-crossed:

It's a good question actually. The SGS4 lagged with its initial release s/w. From what I've heard its improved over time but still has some lag in certain areas. The SGS4 (and now the N3) have new sensors tied to new functionality that requires the phone to always be anticipating an action. Like someone said above, 3GB of RAM should help with the additional workload. That and Samsung's had some time to refine the s/w that was first launched in April. The SGS3 had issues that were fixed in the N2 so I'd expect/hope history repeats itself.

It was excellent, yes. It got even better when I loaded a debloated ROM on it. Only reason I didn't leave TW altogether was I needed wi-fi calling. AOSP was by far the smoothest ROM. Ideally for those of us who don't need or want S-bloat they'd release a non Spen Note 3 equivalent GP Edition.
Running Miui on the s4 completely removes the lag. Hoping the note3 will also get Miui like the note 2 did. Touchwiz will always lag imo.

I've just bought the Note 3, and there's plenty of s-lag. I'm very disappointed with the device and want to swap it for the Blackberry Z30.

That's why I went getting a Galaxy Note 1 in my hand now when waiting for my GN3.
In this kind of " training", I am sure that I will be very satisfied with the speed of GN3..........GN1 is just soooooooooooooooo lag. Freeze itself once or twice a day....

The micro stutter is still there. For me, it's very annoying because the browser suffers from it (and I spend a lot of time in the browser). I've tried both Chrome and the ASAP browsers. The latter is slightly better, but it's still there and still very annoying. I understand it's subjective and does not bother everyone the same way, but for me it completely destroys the user experience.
Here's one way to see the stutter:
1. Open theverge.com in desktop mode.
2. Hover the s-pen at the bottom of the page (results in page slowly scrolling down).
3. Observe stutters (occurs intermittently, usually when scrolling sections in the page that contain images).
4. Do the same thing to scroll up once you've reached the bottom (I.e. hover the s-pen at the top of the page to scroll slowly upwards).
5. Observe the intermittent stutters.
Very bad user experience. Inexcusable considering the hardware. I for one am very disappointed.

You recommend him get an iPhone because?.. Oh that's right it doesn't lag even with buggy websites. Sammy needs to work out some kinks with their over bloated touchwiz nonsense. I was going to give the note 3 a go. Then I heard people complaining of lag similar to the s4 (which I returned because of lag) now I've decided against buying one. I wanted that big 1080p screen so bad but I just can't deal with constant stuttering and frame lag, it drives me nuts.
I myself will be sticking to my newly purchased Gold 5s and the Nexus 5 running stock KitKat when its released.

Don't use theverge.com for testing, their frontend code is terribly slow.

Do you have the exynos model? Because I just tried this in my note 3 S800 and didn't see any stutters. There was one micro stutter initially and then smooth sailing from there.

I know a lot of people say don't use theverge.com to test the device... but what I found strange is:
The iPhone does not have ANY problems with that website, 4, 4S or 5.
The Galaxy S3 both the dual core US snap version and quad core international exynos versions, My Nexus 4 and Note 2, do not have any problems with theverge.com desktop or any other website.
The real kicker is this, my HTC One had ZERO issues with theverge.com, either in the stock browser or chrome. It flies through that website like butter. The S4 which has the same but "better binned" AB S600 chipset grinds to a halt with that website and other graphic intense websites, even XDA desktop will bring the S4 to it's knees sometimes. To level the playing field, I installed chrome on both my S4 and HTC One, theverge.com desktop version flies on the HTC but grinds to a halt on the S4 using the same chipset and same browser. So what's going on here??!
My recently acquired LG G2 is running an s800 and is an absolute monster when it comes to web browsing. Probably the fastest and smoothest web browsing I've ever encountered. I'm really hopeful that the N3 will at least be on par with it when it comes to a simple task like web browsing. Crossing my fingers, from what I've read so far I'm not holding my breath.
I played with a tab pro 8.4 at Best Buy today for about 20 minutes because I was wondering if it could replace both my nexus 10 and my nexus 7 (2013). I think I changed my mind, given the sheer amount of lag I saw on any type of scrolling whatsoever. Changing home screens, flipping through the app drawer, scrolling in chrome, you name it. It was like using a device from 2010.
Boo on you, Samsung! Now I gotta shop some more.
Chrome works great for me. I haven't seen any delays in switching apps or opening magazine or multi window.
Then again, I have a clean install with a bunch of unused stuff disabled.
Don't go by the store demo. It's been discussed here before. The units in the store are running in an awful demo mode. It's very laggy and a terrible representation. I have the 8.4 and got rid of a Nexus 7 and an LG G Tab 8.3 and couldn't be happier.
I currently have the 2013 nexus 7 and have owned a nexus 10 both with custom roms and the stock 8.4 is faster then both, as mentioned you shouldn't base your opinion on a demo tablet

Well that's stupid. Why would they do that? It's got to hurt sales.
I doubt it matters. Most informed buyers buy based on reputable reviews from known sites.
People that buy based on playing with it in the store for a few minutes are either impulse buyers or are being sold by the salesguy.
That's the type of buyer that wouldn't know the performance difference either way...
Yeah I played with the 12.2, saw it lag numerous times and I love samsung products. I figured it was the demo software.

I never had any lag on my 8.4 with the stock OS. Now that I'm running crpalmer's CM 11, I can't remember what lag is.

I haven't and I watch fairly large sized mkv files as well as smaller avi and mp4 files. I've watched about 15 hours of video on it since getting in hand. Not a single hiccup.
I'm not sure I understand what people complain about with lag. If I'm running Touchwiz and scroll or use magazine/flip board UI I see a slight hesitation. It's there if I choose to nitpick but it doesn't bother me as it doesn't affect anything from a usage standpoint. God forbid the home button when pressed has a millisecond delay before going back to the home screen. Not trying to be an a** but I honestly think the people complaining would fine something else to complain about even if things were instantaneous.
The things I care about like the Internet or email or games and movies have no problem or lag at all. I came from the Nexus 7 and G Pad and couldn't be happier.

I second that. I care about how apps run, not how much time it takes to switch between them...
For me it is much faster than my prior G Pad and a better battery life (and much better screen!).

We're not talking about the time it takes to open apps. We're talking about screen hitches and stutters. Maybe you've just never used a smooth device before so you don't know any better.

I've owned about 20 different tablets (Happy to post pics of them if you like). I can tell when a device lags during application use (video playback for example).
I haven't seen an instance of it yet with the 8.4. I've had tablets with terrible lag (The first Asus Transformer for example).

So the Nexus 7 isn't smooth? Trust me I've had enough devices to understand the difference, and I clearly said in my post there is a slight bit of hesitation or stutter, but that it doesn't bother me. It's ever so slight. I'm saying I don't understand how this affects usage for people. Would I like it to be buttery smooth? Sure, but I can't complain as once in in an app, which is where 99 plus percent of my time is spent I don't see anything. It doesn't do it when gaming or watching movies or even surfing the Web. Most users wouldn't even notice it.
I am loving the device. I switched to Nova launcher and any stutter swiping is gone.

I was mostly being snarky because the "you people would just find something to complain about even if it were perfect" line irked me. It's such a copout fanboy thing to say. Leave that crap on the Apple forums, where you're supposed to believe your device was handed down to you by God. Every device has something wrong with it. My nexus 7 is plagued with touch errors that I HOPE I've finally fixed with a custom flash.

I've got it and it's not a fan boy thing as I'm not a Samsung fan normally. My intention wasn't to be an a**hole but I know it comes across that way. I'm glad you said no device is prefect and I completely agree with that. They all have something. And while my Nexus 7 was silky smooth with custom ROME and kernels, my first had many touch issues while the second was better but still there. Just the awful UI. I'm sure there is something more, but I haven't found it or just didn't need it to begin with. I'm very pleased with it
I am coming from a nexus 10 which I loved........ until my son did a cheetah flip and crushed the screen. I think my tab pro 8.4 is on par with my nexus. The screen is as good or better IMO. Video playback with MX player is perfectly smooth. Yes, every now and then there is a little stutter when switching screens. I've noticed that it is almost always when I go to or from the magazine ux screen.
I loved to bare bones UI of my nexus 10 but what can I say, I like all the options and eye candy of the Samsung tainted UI. I'm sure root and getting rid of a bunch of junk would probably help out quite a bit. I know it made a difference on my nexus.
How is web browsing lag? What frustrates me the most on my current tab (transformer infinity) is lots of lag in browsing in chrome... switching tabs sometimes pauses for several seconds, scrolling in pages it sometimes becomes unresponsive for seconds or will turn gray for a few seconds while it renders the next section.
For inexpensive tabs that is probably acceptable, but if I'm paying a premium I would expect a completely smooth experience. Can anyone comment on that?
Given the reports of lag and stutter persisting in this new line of Galaxy devices, it would be great to see some evidence of it.

There is a horizontal line which is the 60 fps limit (i.e. the limit for a stutter free UI experience). If the bars stay under this line, all is good. If they shoot over it, it can be perceived as stutter. An occasional spike is not too bad, but when you have a lot of spikes it definitely correlates with stuttering in the UI.
You can see in my graphs that my trusty OnePlus One offers a much smoother UI experience than my Note 5. Was wondering if the new line-up is better in any way. Based on the XDA article I don't have high hopes...
If you're having problems with UI turn on GPU acceleration and see if that helps.
Just a few screens, both were taken after scrolling around several times. It's kind of odd because it seemed like every time I stopped scrolling it would spike once it stopped. Probably fine. I also should note that those bars actually seemed to reduce performance in a few areas, such as when using keyboard. It would probably be more accurate to use the adb method so the GPU isn't drawing all of the graphs ontop of the ui. Ty for telling me about this though. Will probably come in handy for testing kernel changes in real-time.

Here ya go. Tho I must say idk what it is, but the homepage of the playstore hasn't scrolled super smooth for me on a single device.
The playstore doesnt cache thatz why it will lag on every device

That looks encouraging! So in your experience, are large spikes (that reach up to the top of the phone almost) rare?

The only time I saw huge spikes was usually right when launching an app or when scrolling for the first time on play store while the stuff was still loading.
Dude why isn't this function more talked about???? This should be part of every reviewers set of tools when reviewing new phones! Why in the world isn't it?? This is the very first time I've seen this little utility and I've been on android since the beginning LOL...wow. This also offers freaking objective evidence on something that has always been a subjective measurement that a lot of Samsung die-hards simply don't want to admit exists. I just ran this on my verizon S6 still on 5.1.1 and I'm sure you can imagine the horror...from what the above poster put up it would appear things are possibly improving with the S7 but one could take a screen cap at a good moment and miss some of the spikes.
I'm not sure if using this measurement tool has me more excited or more mad about what samsung offers as flagship material but it at least gives me a baseline for comparison now, thanks man! I'll be running this like crazy when my S7E comes in and will definitely update with my results.

It can drive you mad though In the beginning with my Note 5 the frame dropping was really bugging me, cause my previous device had been super smooth (OnePlus One). This function just rubs it in
