. i was at ces yeterday at the samsung booth. there was a guy givig the samsung rep a lot of grief for the shoddy updaate rolllout for the us, the samsung rep said we'd have the update "very soon". since it was running on the note 10.1 with lte for verizon one would hope so. it really seems like they delayed the us upate so verizon could have something unique. the guy also asked about the keyboard dock andt he samsung rep said he didn't know but suspected now that verizon was gettting the lte unit samsug would bring the dock to the us. apparenly a marketing decision
as for jellybean on the note it looked great.it is really multi-windows and not split screen. windows are resizeable. switcching lag is gone,

Here's a link to Engadget's Myriam Joire's interview on stage of Samsung's Ryan Bidan yesterday. Joire owns a WIFi Note 10.1 and asked when those of us in North America will get the JB update. Bidan said soon, too. He also said the Verizon LTE tablet will ship with JB 4.2.

I've said since the beginning when these topics started coming out that it was because Samsung had a "newer" version coming out, possibly at CES, that would come with JB preinstalled and it would use that to it's advantage. Look what happened. I guarantee Verizon paid quite a bit to make sure that update would not come out for existing tablets for quite a while after their version was out. No one seems to understand that all these companies care about is making the most possible money in the shortest amount of time. A lot of people have the illusion that they care about consumer interests and wanna put the best possible product in their hands. These are corporations. They wanna put the most "money making" product in consumers hands and that's something they can mass produce quickly, sell quickly, and make quick money on it.
Apple has been using something like this to their advantage for years. They release an iPhone or iPad and deliberately leave out "key" features to be added to future devices. If they didn't, they wouldn't make as much money.
Bottom line is, it's a shame that people think corporations have the consumers best interests in mind..

The business practice Is worldwide . Although the prevalence of LTE varies by market, if one of your country's carriers is deploying LTE and wants marketing advantages by lining up exclusive deals on LTE devices, don't be surprised to see update delays. Start checking tech and cellular tech publications in your respective countries to see if there are rumors of pending releases of carrier branded LTE GN 10.1 devices. If there are, you may see updates for your WIFI devices delayed.
Haha I see some tin foil hats going around. If it was just samsung be one thing but way to many other tablets out there dont have updates to 4.1. But hey what they want to do is up to them. But think .. putting 4.2 ..thats it? That and Verizon name on the back is the best they could come up with? Anyone with a TAB has phone.. anyway.. keep your hat on and who knows..

LOL, I don't think the corporate types like the look of foil with their expensive suits. This is about the reality of corporate relationships and marketing. LTE may be more widely deployed in North America right now but it will be rolled out elsewhere. As it reaches 3G markets, users will find LTE services and devices categorized and priced as premium, top-of-the line . Like it or not, Samsung will repeat the roll out of the LTE GN 10.1 for Verizon with other carriers around the world as those carriers deploy their LTE networks to try to keep up with the 24/7 demand for fast and voluminous amounts of data and entertainment services like streaming. Carriers pay for tweaking and branding and Samsung and all other companies will happily reserve updates and features for a carrier launch even if it makes individual consumers unhappy.

Yes and no. Granted, Verizon is a larger customer than we are as individual consumers. However, I do not want a Note with telephony. I have a phone. And if the poll here is to be believed wi-fi only constitutes the majority of Note buyers. Thus, Samsung ignores us at their peril, and by us I mean we individual users with wi-fi only and the retailers selling us these units.

If this is true, this sucks tremendously. Guess, people are going to have to get the international version.
Our man Chris Davies wrote earlier this week that the carriers might kill the Galaxy Tab 7.7 thanks to the fact that the tablet has voice calling capability. Davies reckons that the carriers in the US won’t appreciate that voice calling feature because it might make some users cancel that smartphone plan rather than having both smartphone and tablet plans. I would be willing to bet that Samsung shopped the Tab 7.7 and the Note around to carriers in the US and found no takers.

Well, this was an international event, and they didn't announce availability in any country yet, so I don't think they're ready to announce availability. I don't think that Samsung is dumb enough to pass on one of its biggest markets for this, and I think this was just a misunderstanding.
Also, the guy in this video seems to have been told that the "IR" port on the side is for the "American" model of the Galaxy Tab 7.7, and that the models on display were Wi-Fi only, so hopefully the Wi-Fi model will launch alongside the 3G model, unlike the original 7 inch Galaxy Tab...

Also for what it's worth, these PR guys really don't know what they're talking about most of the time, the girl in this video even said that the camera was 5mp, when it's actually 3mp.
They did this for all the previous devices. That just means they don't have a plan in place for US yet. It doesn't mean they won't release in US.

Actually injunctions granted from Germany impacts the rest of the EU doesn't it?
Also the reason why germany is chosen over other EU countries is the fact that Germany will grant preliminary injunction based on Community design and community design grants do not have a review process before being granted

The preliminary injunction doesnt effect other countries in EU at the moment. At first it did, but some days after it was issued the court sayd they are not sure if they can ban it in all EU countries.
I'm not sure if the final decision will effect the EU or only Germany.

Yup. It pissed me off too when I read it. I'm hoping that we can benefit from this update. The more and more I look at it, it is starting to turn out that I might as well just pony up the cash for a SGSII.
at this point I don't care about an update, the only reason I would be interested would be to better my battery life on miui. Oh well I will my have my sgs2 next week.
Why are you guys getting sgs2 when you can clearly see the lackluster costumer support from T-Mobile. You're going to be in the same situation in a couple of months with no ics. I hope your planning on getting the international version and not the T-Mobile version. Don't let your compulsion reward the T-Mobile execs who failed us. I don't know about you but with stable CM 7.1 eb streamline kernel and my added ffc I've got a phone that hasn't given any problems and given me all the features that I could want from any newer phone. Just my two cents, not meant to tell you what to do.

EXACTLY what I was going to say! T-mobile smacks us Vibrant users hard, denying us gingerbread when other carriers are providing it to their Galaxy S customers, and our response is ... to buy a new, more expensive phone from T-mobile?
Not me. I would feel way too much like a $ucker. I'm not buying another phone from T-mobile. I'll go international on the SGS II or I won't go at all. And when my contract is up I'll remember how T-mobile snubbed their Vibrant customers.
To be fair Verizon is just as bad. It seems that the American mobile market is terrible compared to the international market. Say what you want about apple but at least they told the carriers to go shove a stick up their asses.

i'm getting one for $300 new and if its not up to par, I will sell it and make a profit. I want a bigger screen, the phone is fast enough for anything I'll ever do. Also there will always be something better around the corner.
If a car manufacturer sold 2011 cars that got a certain mpg, and in 2012 they sell that same exact car but they tweaked the way the car's computer was programmed so it got a better gas mileage, would the car manufacturer offer to reprogram your car's computer for free? Nope. Customers would pay more money on gas for as long as they own that car. Funny how nobody complains about free car engine computer upgrades that are available to similar cars with identical engines and computers (when it hits them in the wallet!), but we cry because our cell phones aren't upgraded to an operating system that is only available on different phones with different processors.

The Vibrant got one upgrade, from 2.1 to 2.2; if we are going to base our future expectations on the Vibrant's history, we should assume the SGSII will get one upgrade - probably to ICS.
Now back to your question: why get a SGSII? I think that for the most part people are first choosing T-Mobile, and second choosing the phones T-Mobile has to offer. For the most part the SGSII is 'better' than the Vibrant, that's why people are getting one. In a year there will be phones that are 'better' than the SGSII and people will buy those phones. That's why.

Buying a SGS2 On T-Mobile would be the worst mistake you could ever make. Didn't you learn a lesson from the Vibrant fiasco?
HTC and Motorola have both made statements on ICS updates. Samsung USA has not said one thing about ICS update. SGS2 on T-mobile is different from all the other variants of SGS2. SGS2 on Vibrant internals are so different that it probably requires a bunch of unique drivers not common to the other SGS2 variants. Trust me don't but the SGS2. You will be lucky to get ICS and if you do it will probably come a year from now, by that time the next version of Android will be out and Samsung will have LONG FORGOTTEN SGS2 on T-Mobile. Don't make the same mistake TWICE.

We were promised an update to Froyo. It took a bit of pressure to even have that released, but we got it. We were never promised an update to Gingerbread, so they have no obligation to give us one. And it makes no financial sense for them anyway, which is what it really comes down to. I'm not saying I like it, that's just the way it is. We will not be getting an update to Gingerbread.

You are missing a big point here. Sure, nice car analogy, but what if you have a Toyota and they don't update your gas mileage, but Ford does update a similar model car? Would you still be just as likely to buy a Toyota next time?
That's what we have here. I have a Droid X and a Vibrant (and a Galaxy S 4G for that matter). The Droid X and Vibrant came out virtually within days of each other. I've had official GB on my Droid X for months now. Vibrant will never get GB. The Droid X also had Froyo months before the Vibrant. Both phones were released with Eclair.
So, when I'm getting my next phone, I'm certainly going to factor that in. I know Motorola/Verizon will be more apt to update my phone as compared to Samsung/TMobile (personally, I put more of the blame on Samsung than TMobile, but that's debatable).

Not sure about that. Buy a Motorola/Verizon phone next time because you are more likely to get future updates and it does affect Samsung financially. I doubt that too many people will make that a big factor in their decision, but, over time, the bad reputation could start to have a deeper impact to Samsung's financials.
It all comes down to the finances. Motorola/Verizon bean counters calculated that the upgrade to GB made financial sense and Samsung/TMobile calculated that it didn't.
They're not giving us anymore updates. IMO this has been apparent for a long time. A $500 phone has pretty much become obsolete as far as TMob/Samsung are concerned. What I'm wondering is who's to blame? Did TMob drop the ball, or Samsung? Either way I'm leaving TMob, and won't be purchasing any more Samsung products. Screw 'em both. I will not spend hundreds on a new phone every year, which is exactly what they want.

Since XDA is abound with noobs and hackers, it should be known that the EFuse chip will not let you change your bootloader or run any type of FastBoot-OEM Unlock. Just letting you know it will trip the chip and brick instantly.
I came from a Motorola that was never scheduled to get a 2.2 update and we hacked it and created our own, but took some serious time and support, none of which came from Morotola or our carrier. In fact our carrier released their "official" version of 2.2 and when we broke it down, found our code in the libs, modules,...Since open source, what could we do?
Just an fyi to anyone that is wanting to move to a Motorola (albeit the Atrix boot unlock was leaked, but as far as I know, that is the only one in the whole Mfamily).

"We were working with our operators to make sure that we brought it out to as many people as we can," Stanford added. "Vodafone we're expecting imminently [to release ICS]. Open market will be once we've got all of the operator pieces on board... It'll come at very much the same time."
'We don't want to disadvantage anyone'
Stanford would not confirm exactly how many SIM-free S2 owners have received the ICS update so far, nor give a completion date for the ICS update rollout -- he would only say: "We're really pushing it hard over the next coming weeks."
"It's always very tight, in terms of the testing processes and all the rest of it," he said. "It's not a switch in Korea and then the whole thing just activates every device that is out there... We work very closely with the networks to help them get ICS out.
"Everyone holds their hands up and says, 'Well, we need to do more in these instances.'"
Asked whether consumers would be better off buying a device from a network rather than SIM-free if they want to ensure they get future Android updates promptly, Stanford said: "In this instance [they would have been better off on a network]. Moving forward, I anticipate the upgrades will come a lot faster, at once, with everybody."
He added that it's not Samsung's intention to prioritise SIM-free device buyers in future, rather it wants to level the playing field so everyone gets the update around the same time.
"We don't want to disadvantage anyone, we don't want to say that they have to buy it from anywhere, we want everyone to have the same experience, whether or not it's open-market, network, to us they're exactly the same," he said.
'Communication can be managed better next time'
Stanford conceded that communications is an area where Samsung can make its own improvements. And he apologised to any SIM-free S2 owners who have been disappointed by how long it's taken to get ICS.
"The communication itself can be managed a bit better next time," he said. "It's just an ongoing process piece that we work very closely on to try and make sure we get it absolutely bang on so we apologise to anyone -- we really apologise to anyone -- who has been disappointed by this.
"We're always desperate to get [updates] out as fast as we can, there's no reason for us not to. We don't like to have unhappy customers, it goes against everything that we do. We do take it very seriously. It's communication sometimes we need to work on -- I accept that. That there needs to be perhaps more overall communication with the partners involved as well," he said.
"We are happy now that ICS is rolling out and those people that we've spoken to are very happy with it," Stanford added. "We're always looking for ways to speed it up -- with regards to Galaxy Note... the upgrade on that will be a lot quicker."

Doesn't matter. We just need the update file and we can upgrade our phones ourselves using CWM, Odin, or whatever. I'm definitely on an unlocked International Note in the USA, so if whatever country comes out with official ICS first, most definitely our devs will get it to us quickly.

It makes a lot of sense.
Samsung dont roll out the new OS, the network operators do and they will only do that when they're ready to support the new OS.
Imagine the chaos and how pissed off the telco's would be if the hardware manufacturers rolled out software updates willy nilly and the telco's started to get flooded with support calls for issues created by a patch they didn't know about or hadn't trained their staff to deal with.
It doesnt worry me at all... once the first Telco releases an official ICS update I'm likely to get it and install it.
Regardless of which telco it was (actually I'd probably not install a Chinese or Saudi etc ROM... I don't trust those Gov's enough.).
My telco doesn't even sell or support the note yet... it hasn't slowed me down one iota and if you're even slightly savvy enough it wont slow you down either.

This makes sense to me.
As I understand it, he is talking about OTA updates.
ie. regular Joe Blow customers that will update their phone when their phone tells them to update.
The networks can push it out to their customers first. Make sure it works on all networks, and then anyone left over will get it after that via Kies.
If you want to update your device earlier, you can upgrade it manually by downloading the upgrade yourself, but for the average user, it won't worry them and they'll upgrade when their phone tells them to.
All i can say is "meh". We need a leak of some kind. Give us that and i'll be rocking AOSP as long as my Note is pumping blood electricity through its veins.
The current ics roms are fine for me.... Maybe once the new premium suite comes out I'll try it for a little, but right now I don't really care how long it takes because I have something just as good if not better :thumbup:
If waiting a little longer for more stability and smoothness is all I have to do then I am fine with it. I am very satisfied with gingerbread as it is now.

That's kinda obvious. If the release is dependent on networks ( cause they need to test it ), it's clear that they will test and release "their" firmware first, and the one for evil guys who didn't buy a phone from them - will get it last.
But it doesn't really matter, does it ? We need at least one official release, for any network - cause frankly what we need most is the kernel, the rest they can stick up their.... Joking of course, but for good AOSP we really need just the kernel.

I actually don't believe this because Samsung, or any other company, develops their software and then offers it to the carriers to test their devices with the software. In the end it's the telecom operator that decides if the device will get the software that the developer has developed / offered.
Sim unlocked phones don't follow any carrier's decision, they get whatever the manufacturer decides.
I have a SIM unlocked Note, that came from Germany, and all I know is that of all the Notes that came out here, I know that the German unlocked devices have been the first to get OTA updates from Samsung.
I'm sure if Samsung deems a release acceptable, they will push it to their devices as well as offer it to the carriers. We get the updates faster because we actually cut out the middleman. It's months faster than buying a carrier locked device because the carrier doesn't need to accept the update. So I actually don't believe that they will update all the carriers before their own devices.
It's like Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream offering NEW flavors to Costco, Walmart and other stores before offering the new flavors in their own stores. Or Apple releasing new devices to Bestbuy before offering them online / in their own retail stores.

Samsung just need to know if their ics works on the different operators network, nothing more. If an operator dont want to release the new ics, its just fine, it doesnt mean that its not compatible with their networks.
Just imagine, with all the different countries selling samsung mobiles, if the fact that a network operator decides he wont release an update can block the release for sim-free mobile, then we'll never get any official upgrade.
That's why unlock device always get update quick.
ARE there carrier locked versions in the UK? I got mine on o2, and I got the simfree version. Possibly because I went through phones 4u, however.

I dont think that even matters for us. AT&T got another model, but here we all have the same stuff. I bought mine unlocked but branded. I just flashed official unbranded stock rom and voila, non-carrier Note.

I think this is what happens when you have a strong product that is gonna sell no matter what, you get to dictate things like telling the carriers not to mess with the design and all that stuff. Like apple.

I was thinking just the same. This is a paradigm shift. Android has, by far, the greatest market share among smartphone OSes, but Apple still dominates in hardware. I think this phone could change all of that - especially at $199. Add to that unprecedented custom SW development and accessories.
The bigger question looming is what this means for the rest of the Android OEMs. Aside from offering a better display and aesthetics, how do you compete with something like this? Let's face it, a strong ecosystem is more valuable than any feature these days.
More than anything, this signals a shift in power away from the US carriers who are used to getting their own way. Till now, the only company they listened to was Apple.
Hopefully this will encourage HTC etc to let them deliver the phone they designed, and not the carriers. Though some, like Sprint, always managed to make the phone better
I don't live in the US, can someone explain why the carriers do this? What do they gain from releasing a custom device? A competitive edge? The most that happens where I live is the big carriers will sell a device with their logo as the boot animation and a custom app or two. At the extreme their logo is branded on the device.

US carriers (and ISP's) are basically a monopoly permitted by our govt (via the FCC) so there is very little competition and no choice for consumers. In the rest of the world you have unlocked phones which share the same GSM network, prepaid plans and its easy to switch. Its the exact opposite here, you pick your carrier, pick the phone they offer and sign a contract.

Funny, here we have the exact same situation but with our fixed line telephones. Only one partially state owned company who abuses their monopoly so badly the effect is measurable in our inflation rate.

I'm just hoping for someone to get a Wi-Fi update so the poor N8010/13 folks don't have to keep using kluged 3G ROMs.
hey even I am waiting for the update it is really strange why Samsung keeps doing this there is not much difference apart for changing the wireless services
I would have expected the 3G one to be harder to push updates through because it's through wireless services.. :/
No its the same you push it through Wifi or 3G there is no difference it connects to update server and downloads the data does
Someone care to post the build date. I know from the K that its newer then J9 firmware but its still nice to know.

All the updates have been for 8000 no other model except for the LTE model has received an update.

You know - if I honestly thought you were being serious - I'd write a nice long explanation as to why a lot of companies just prefer to pretend the US doesn't exist.
For one thing: Americans tend to be 'trend' buyers. So they buy Apple products WAY out of proportion relative to the world. Macs, for example, are about 6.8% of the world market, but are over 15% of the US market. Stores like Best Buy carry Samsung (heck, they even have Samsung mini-stores in many outlets), but if you actually try to buy accessories for Samsung prods - you're screwed. Now, you want an iPhone case? No problem, two entire racks of those babies.
So, if you're Samsung - who do you invest in? The US, which is a large but almost antagonistic market - or *the rest of the world* who actually likes your products?
Meanwhile, up here in Canada, we get the worst of both worlds because we're too small a population, and too closely associated to the US.
Then again, the first Samsung permanent retail outlet in North America is here - in Vancouver - so I guess this is Samsung's way of saying 'Canada - we know you're not the US... " (Ok ok.. it's really because Samsung sells a much smaller range of products in Canada, so that makes us a good 'test case' to try out a retail store in NA)...
Personally, I'd rather have the ROM update.
Actually, is the same in Europe. You can get a lot of accessories for an icrap and close to nothing for most other brands. I guess the sellers have a bigger cut from the huge prices of apple products, and they are also counting on trends.
