True or false? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've heard many people complain about the unresponsiveness of the screen and its yellow tint. How bad is the unresponsiveness for someone who has this phone? Does it bother you that much and slow your typing? Does the yellow tint bother you? I'm coming from the SGS2 and I'm interesting in buying the N4 but I hear so many bad things about it. Additionally, I heard there is a rattle in the phone? I read up on XDA on a poll thread but I think it's normal? What do you think? Is this phone better than the SGS3? (sorry to bring up this phone) and not considering the prices of both devices. I want to forget about the price and just focus on which one will not give me any noticeable problems
Thanks!

i can verify that its not too difficult to press lightly and not have a touch register. although i dont usually press very lightly, so it really depends on the individual. if you normally have a delicate touch you will notice it. personally it doesn't slow me down at all.

I wonder what you mean by 'light'. Are you happy you bought it? did you notice the yellow tint?

The yellow tint can only be seen from extreme angles and I'm doing perfectly fine with the screen sensitivity.

Thanks! I'd still like to hear a bit more from other people :3 By the way did you face any other issues with the n4? at all? hows the battery?

I don't think you will be disappointed by this phone coming from an S2. Most of the "issues" have been blown out of proportion. The rattle being the best example.
Yellow tint?
The screen is on the warmer side, or may have its gamma off, it's not a yellow tint. You would probably not know the difference unless you compare it side by side with something like an amoled display. Some people have mentioned a yellow tint when you look at it from the bottom left or upper right corners at an angle. This seems normal as it shows a blueish tint from the two other corners.
Rattle?
I checked mine, and to hear this rattle I have to shake the phone vigorously next to my ear and be in a completely quite room to be able to hear it, it doesn't rattle at all if you just grab or move the phone.
Screen sensitivity?
It is indeed less sensitive, for me it sometimes fails to register taps on the home button, but that's about it, it doesn't bother me that much. It depends on whether or not you're used to very light touches.

I don't have any of those issues. My response is excellent and my screen has no tint at all. In fact my N4 has none of the issues being complained about.
I think a lot of the perceived issues are overblown. Typical for a device launch. The few unhappy people post and the majority are happy and don't bother.
It seems you have more motivation to go on a board if you're having an issue than if you don't. I experienced the same thing with the gnex launch (again flawless phone) and nexus 7 launch (flawless tablet).
I don't think I'm just lucky, I just think you're more likely to find those with issues posting.

Thanks I think I'm becoming more persuaded towards the SGS3 because I love AMOLED and I'm just too worried about this phone in general.. I'm not sure what you mean by light touches though.. I usually handle my SGS2 with one hand so I kind of press densely but maybe it is not enough.. Is it hard enough, for instance, that if you press your thumb on your forearm, that your skin will bend down (not sure if thats a correct word) a bit? Or does it stay still? I would say my skin moves a bit following my thumb..

I've had neither issue but I've also had no heating issues either and people keep complaining about that too.

My screen isn't yellow-that seems like some isolated batch.
The only time my nexus 4 heated up was when I was downloading several apps, watching youtube on 3G and charging the phone all at the same time. It cooled down very quickly afterwards.
I have grown to prefer the 'touch error' of this screen, I came from an SGS2 which has a super-sensitive screen (it can be activated by hovering close to it), often a swipe or light touch would register as a single point touch and take me elsewhere in the phone, especially with one-handed use. Now, though, I actually have to press something to select it. Swipes don't register as single point touches, an errant finger in one hand use mostly won't register, which is brilliant IMHO. I prefer it.

Choosing between the N4 and SGS3 is the hardest thing in my life so far. Just kidding. I hate the SGS3's design and I think the N4 is the most sexy beautiful beast in the world. Anyway, thanks a lot of the replies guys but I have... a possibly last query.. What would you guys do if you had a change to pick again from both of those phones?

Then I don't think you will have a problem with screen sensitivity. The most compelling reasons to get this phone are the stock android experience, future upgrades availability, and its solid build, it feels great in your hand. You will have to weight those attributes versus your preference for amoled screens. I have a Samsung 7.7 tab which has one of the best amoled screens I've seen and great hardware, but the lack of support and SW upgrades sort of makes the Nexus 7 a better option.

My screen does not look yellow to me, but it can depend on what phone you just came from. To me the green in some apps is not as vibrant as it was on my HTC One S.
I have no issues.

Thanks guys.. again xD What do you guys recommend for me?

No yellow tint on my screen, however the screen sensitivity is slightly less responsive than the Galaxy S III, but should'nt be too much of an issue. I would recommend the Nexus 4 due to the price, pure android experience, and the first to get updates.

When speaking of touch sesitivity you need to keep in mind that you are talking about a capacitive screen. That means it senses the capacitive charge setup from your finger and the screen. This can be effected by your skin, oil/dirt on your skin/screen, moisture content and temprature of the air. For these reasons it is very difficult to accurately compare the opinion of your touch to someone else's opinion of their touch.

Battery life isn't as good as the GS2, nor is the speaker or build quality and there is no Micro SD slot or removable battery. What is also annoying is seeing my friends I noticed that black levels were more of a grey, I just cannot get used to non OLED screens any more. There isn't really any improvement over the GS2, the only thing you can say is specs but the Nexus 4 is hardly the king, it's lagging behind the competition even with it's superior hardware, purely because of build quality from LG.
I was excited for the Nexus 4 but unless you cannot afford a Smart Phone and the £280 price point is perfect for you then there is no reason to buy it. I'm just gonna get the GS4 on my upgrade next year.

I came from a Galaxy SIII , and I couldn't be any happier. My battery life is much better, the screen has no yellow hue to it that I can see, even at weird angles, the touch screen couldn't be any more sensitive in the opinion (its just as sensitive as my sgs3 was) , the rattle is there, but you have to have the ear piece right up against your ear to hear it at all, if not it barely audible. To me, this phone is the best Android device I've ever owned, and I've owned ALOT of them. One more thing, this is the best screen ive ever seen on a smartphone too. Text is extremely crisp, colors are true to life, and it is really bright!
I hope this, and everyone else's posts have calmed your concerns about the Nexus 4. To be honest , you be missing out on an amazing device if you chose not to get it because some people are overly dramatic .
I hope you get it

This Nexus 4 crap is really perplex.. I don't know if to buy it or not. The price doesn't matter right now, I just want a good smartphone with a lot of development teams and sexy design along with good specs. To be honest, I saw the SGS3 on a store and I used it and the screen is amazing but if i get like 1 inch close I can actually see pixels .-. And additionally, I HATE the design. But if there's no other better choice I'll get it. What do you guys recommend? forget about the price please.

SAMOLED+ Pixel Response Time and Touch Screen Discussion & My Review of These Parts.

SAMOLED+ Pixel Response Time and Touch Screen Discussion & My Review of These Parts.
Hey all, I wanted to start a thread to have a discussion about these two things that are my only disappointments in this phone.
Let me start by saying I think this phone is awesome, and yes I feel there are a few other faults on the phone (lockscreen delay when running off the battery due to the CPU taking a second to kick in, weak GPS/wifi signal sometimes, heavy banding on gradients etc) But those are software issues and I know in the near future Samsung/Devs will sort this out.
But I had some big complaints that aren't (still I hope not) software issues. Firstly;
- Response Time.
By this I mean when you buy a new monitor and the response time is listed as 4ms or whatever. This is the time the pixel takes to make a full change. A slow response time will cause ghosting. And that's exactly a issue that the Samsung Galaxy SII faces. Ghosting.
I've gone through 4 replacement SII's for various reasons, and on all of them they ghosted. So it's not just my phone. Samsung bizarrely states the response time is 0.001ms which would be there would be no ghosting at all. However there is, quite a bit actually, by my testing the screen is actually around 6-8ms.
I want to see if anyone else notices it. I know there's been a couple of threads on this but I want to see if the majority of people notice this. Here's how to test, go onto white page with black text on, and then scroll down the page at a moderate pace, not to fast not too slow, try it at different speeds as well just in case you don't get it right.
The easiest way I find to do this is use the inbuilt stock news app, load up any story and it'll give you a long white page with black text you can scroll through. As you may notice if you got a decent set of eyes on you, the text will leave a trail. Also known as ghosting. To me, I find this absolutely unacceptable on such high end device.
- Colour
Also, as it's been widely reported and has been noticeable on all my GSII's, the colour temperature is very 'cool', nowhere near the perfect 6500k. As a result, white's look very blue. This is fine and you hardly notice it on it's own, however when I'm using the device at my PC, which I use on a 32" IPS panel TV I professionally calibrated, the whites on the GSII look more blue than the ocean! Technically this is a software problem and can easily be sorted when custom roms come along but jeez, this is some bad stock colour calibration.
Also when you tilt the display, the viewing angles are generally very good, however tilting the display by pretty much any angle adds an extra blue tint to the screen on an already blueish screen.
I'm an absolutely screen quality perfectionist so these points really get to me. Especially considering this is such a high end device.
Overall I'd give the display a 6.5/10.
After the colour temperature has been sorted, I'll give it a 7.5/10.
If the ghosting can get minimized somehow even slightly through software on top of that, I'd give it an 8.5/10.
Secondly;
- Touch Screen
Now we all know about the movement deadzone/threshold on the touch screen which is massively annoying, but hopefully that'll get fixed in the near future. But What I'm going to complain about is the low sensitivity of the touch screen is the best way I can describe it.
On my HTC Desire, I can tap the screen ridiculously lightly and quick, and the device will register the input, absolutely no questions asked. Absolutely brilliant.
However on the GSII the sensitivity seems to be a lot lower, I can tap the screen lightly and quickly and the screen won't register the touch at all. This is pretty damn annoying as sometimes I just tap the screen lightly normally and I have to retap things. Not very often but still. I wish the device was as sensitive as the HTC Desire.
In it's current state I'd give the touch screen an 8/10.
If the movement deadzone and sensitivity got fixed, it'd be a 10/10.
Now I'm sure I had more to write about but I've forgotten now. I'll edit it into the post if I can think of the other things.
Now as I said, I think the GSII is a smashing phone, sure there are a lot of niggles at the minute, but I know they'll get sorted soon. Just the points I've outlined in this thread are things I'm scared won't get sorted. But you never know, I'm really hoping they can get sorted/do get sorted.
As I said I've had 4 Galaxy S2's all had the above issues, and I've used 2 other S2's from friends who also have these issues, so it's widespread, I'm just curious if people actually notice it.
I've added a poll to the thread regarding these issues. Please don't lie to yourself about this stuff, if you notice it, please answer honestly
I honestly hadnt noticed any of this stuff, i even watched a video of the deadzone and couldnt replicate it myself. I also think the touch response is fine you must have a very light finger/thumb!
The ghosting i hadnt noticed probly because i dont read text as im scrolling i tend to go a page at a time and the fact that im too taken back with the smoothness that pages do scroll.
The blue tint you guessed it i hadnt noticed but then again its not often i hold my phone up to specially tuned monitors.. Then again maybe theres a reason for it maybe it helps reduce glare in sunlight, then again maybe im talking aload of ****e!
no offence but you sound like you could moan for england! chill out and focus on the things it does do well and you may notice the negatives less
Personally....I think your nuts. This is the best screen ever on a phone. I have none of those issues, the touch screen perfectly responsive, my whites are white as white can be. You keep getting your phone from the same supplier and that leads me to be what the problem is. mine is perfect in every way. lucky me I guess

Nah it's just I'm very picky when it comes to screens. And I definitely expect the best on such a high end device, unfortunately the SGSII falls abit short on this.
It's still a great device. Really wish I didn't notice this sort of stuff haha.

Best screen on a phone possibly. It's not the best screen ever though, it's good don't get me wrong, but not the best.
And I assure you, your device has everything that I outlined in my original post, it's just down to the user if they notice it or not. When I used my friends Galaxy SII's (who both got it from different places to me and each other) I asked them about this stuff and they had no idea what I was on about, so I thought my phone was faulty and I had a look at their GSII's and theirs have the same problems aswell, they just don't notice them. (They did after I pointed it out though muwhahah)
I must not have a sgs2. Maybe its because mine is from first batch but I have none of your listed issues. After 4 devices, it cant be samsungs fault.
Heh, guys every SGSII have these issues, I'm not arguing that, was merely checking to see how many people notice these issues (not many in the grand scheme of things apparently) there's quite a lot of reports of these problems so it's just down to the user

I guess I have horrible standards. No shadowning on my phone.
The ghosting and blue-ish colortemperature I noticed right from the start. But to be honest: I really dont care. At least the ghosting is nothing which stands out of the crowd... all of them have it ... HTC, LG, Apple. The only reason you don't notice it as much, is the lower contrast on the other displays.
As for the sensitivity: It's a little lower than with my htc hd2, BUT I'm actually glad it is. The sensitivity on the HTC phones is ridiculously high. You don't even have to touch the screen and you end up clicking something, which can be quite annoying sometimes. On the SGS2 I never had any missclicks, nor did I have any non-responsivenesses. Perfect setup for my taste.
I think all of the average joe out there probably doesn't care about all this minor issues. You must have the intention to find the fault of the phone in order to get what you want to find but do you think most of us would be doing this? Haha.. Tbh I don't really care as long as the phone does what I want without falling apart. lol..
Yeah I was a bit surprised by the ghosting, having seen the response time claims, but neither that nor the colour temp (on 'movie') have really bothered me so far.
What has irked me a bit is the image sharpness. On a site like m.engadget.com the coloured text on white background has a dark outline all around it, which to me looks horrible. Anyone else noticed that?
I think the ghosting issue is due to the low fresh rate of the touch screen. It's lower than 60HZ.
When you scroll the screen, the animation is not smooth enough,so you see the ghosting.
It's more of a visual persistence issue.
I remember when some choppy animation showed in CRT,I can see ghosting.
Never the less, when your finger leave the touch screen, let it scrolling itself, you can see the "ghosting" would be less noticible.
But you can still see it,that's because of 60HZ refresh rate of the Display.
I just wondering if there is any way to change the fresh rate of the touch screen.
What are you doing that's causing ghosting issues? There is a definite color temp issue but that's how every amoled screen has been so far. I would take a little bit of blue tint over the black color performance
The thing that causes the ghosting, as I said in my original post, it fast movement. The screens pixels can't change fast enough so things leave a trail.
As I said the best way so see this is to loadup a long page with a white background and black text and then scroll down at a moderate pace, fast but not so fast you eyes your eyes canty follow the line of text. If toy do it right and you've got a decent set of eyes you'll see that the text leaves a trail.

Yep, there's a lot disappointments with the screen on this phone. However as the poll is so far proving, majority of people don't care for quality as much as us. Only a few others care/notice about the things we're complaining about.

Thanks .. Thats the funniest **** i have read all day...
Theres nothing wrong with my sgs2 and ive owned Hero's Desire's Nexus One's and even an LG2X.. This phone is superb.. This dude does sound a bit anal..
Hey. I can definately notice ghosting on this screen if i purposely try to but as others have said, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. When watching films or playing games it's non-existant.
As for the whites, you yourself stated you can't really notice until you hold the device against your professionally calibrated screen. How are the blacks in comparison? Out of interest, how much was that screen/calibration.
I think the main problem with alot of peoples gripes is focusing on only the weaker aspects of the phone rather than the device as a whole. People want perfection which unfortunately doesn't exist in the world of electrical consumer tech.
now i see this horrible grey everywhere i cannot even look at my phone any more!
I hope that this issue would be enough to change my device!
Hey drm111, as you know I have those problems too.
Did you have them on all your 4phones?
1) As you know I have this topic in wich one screen had this blue ish coat on the screen, noticable from the angles you talk abouth. But the other one does not have it.
So maybe not everyone has that blue coating? Did you investigated that further?
2) As you also know there is this yellowish/darker 1/3 of the left screen, probably some don't notice it. You have to be in a dark room or in a light one really looking for it. You read abouth this huh?
But I you didn't post it here. Aren't you having this problem? And did you have it on al of your 4 phones?
3) Ghosting, yes i notice it to. No sharp text when scrolling,is that the ghosting too?
I have this first generation ipod touch, text stays sharp when scrolling. Should be the case here too.
4) Than you have the grey tints, wich turn pink. You can see it in the topic of nongrata23. But some phone don't have it it seems. Software or hardware?
We need to figure out what is 'normal' and what isn't. As I don't want to send my phone back if it is normal at this point for all the gs2 that are on the market.
Let me start by saying i used to work for a PC magazine and was among those who blew the whistle on the nVidia texture replacement fiasco surrounding the Geforce 5800. I can see a single texture out of place in a high FPS game, so my eye is VERY keen.
The colour of the SGS2 is slightly blue yes, but mine is no worse than the average LCD, including the Retina display.
Response time is seemingly slower than the previous AMOLED screens ive seen, but again is more than a match for the LCDs out there.
I would say samsung have made a trade off between the sub pixel density and other factors. It works for me just fine.
The 16bit thing is interesting. It looks to me like the screen isnt 16bit, but it is using 16bit at times. Thats a driver issue.

Im here to confirm some issues on galaxy s2 as normal

Hey, i have a samsung galaxy s2 and just like some of you i had been struggling to get a proper phone with no overheating and the weird blue tint on the screen when you view the screen from different angles, i have noticed very few galaxy s2 without this blue shifting problem when viewed the screen from another side and i can explain why at 5):
1) Ive swapped my phone 2 times now, the first, the second, the third and the manager phone all reproduce this issue, the screen looks just fine when viewed straigth but if you try to view it from another angle the screen will turn a bit to blue, it is most noticeable in white backgrounds.
Since i have tested 4 random phones with exactly the same problem i can confirm this "feature" as normal.
2) All of my three phones have blurring issues when in motion, you can clearly see it when the text is white and the background is black, altough this blurring is very small compared to the top of the line LCD screens its still there on all 3 phones so i can confirm this as normal.
3) The 2 phones i had all had random overheating issues, this must have something to do with either a design flaw or lack of quality in programming the OS for the phone, this is also normal for your phone to happen as it happened in the last 3 of mines, the only way ive found to avoid this issue is simply exit all applications, clear memory ram and then start the app, this semms to prevent my phone to reaching insane levels of heat.
Heres a list of apps some people and i reported to overheat the phone:
Gun Bros - Checked
Pocket Legends - Unchecked
4) The speaker quality of the phone is at best, average, when the volume is set to max, some sounds like "pure tone" will distort just a bit, its very dissapointing in a phone this expensive, but then again samsung cannot be compared to sony in that area, i can also confirm this as normal.
5) The phones ive seen which did not have the blue tint issues when the phone is viewed from other angles had another problem when compared to the ones that actually did: The phone that did have blue tint issues, when viewed directly has very good Whites while the phone which does not have the blue tint issues when viewed from another angles even when looked at it directly it already has a shade of blue, so that might explain why this problem wasnt detected in that phone.
6) When you view in a browser some images, you will notice that on your left corner of the screen there is a white pixel, dont worry, it is not a dead pixel, to confirm this all u need to do is to view the picture horizontaly, notice how the white pixel changed sides with the top left corner?
According to BarriH_GEG, It's there to keep a service alive in support of hardware acceleration in the stock browser. They chose white because the majority of web pages are white or lighter colors
7) Poor wifi conectivity while holding the back of the phone with both hands, it happened in all 3 of my phones aswell, this is also probably normal.
8) The screen displays a slight shift of color at the left side of the screen, its very hard to notice but its there, people refer to it as "yellow tint", for more information please visit this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079444
Thanks to: Sp1tfire for letting me know about this issue, i cannot confirm if this issue is normal or not for all phones as ive only done this test on my third phone (which also semms to slightly change hue a bit in that thread OP website, its almost unoticeable but its there).
9) When viewing white objects with the camera on low to medium light condition there is a pink circle noticed in the middle of the picture, i havent tested this with all 3 phones but from i can tell in this thread it happens on all of them:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1079444
Thanks to: Sp1tfire for pointing this issue also.
10) A bit less significant but still noteworthy: if you change your brightness setting in a dark room or area from auto to manual and put it at max, exit the brightness setting and try to put it back to automatic, you will notice that its stuck at max even though it should drop it alot, to fix this all you need to do is to flash a light source at the upper front side of your phone and then take it away, it will now work again.
Notes: If the phone is viewed directly and has a blue tint on it, it is broken, if it displays of red tint or yellow tint its also broken and you should trade it if it bothers you, make sure to scan for dead pixels by using full screen images of blues, reds, greens, black and white. If the image is pure to those colors and theres 1 or more pixel displaying something differently that means the phone has dead pixels and should be also swapped.
Hope this helps some people to not waste their time like i did, i feel a bit disapointed because my first phone apparently had nothing wrong with it, so at least i can help you not to make the same mistakes as i did.
After swapping my phone 2 times and finding these issues, i would surelly want to trade it for an alternative! but unfortunatelly reality came to me everytime the shop manager asked: "Do you want the same model or a different one?" Then it made me think, what model? Sure Xperia Arc and Play are cool phones, but they dont come even close to the performance of this phone and honestly none other dual core phones have OLED screen and even compared to those this phone is alot better in performance, so i came to realise there was really no choice, if i wanted the best in performance and the best in image quality then this phone was, is and will be the answear for time to come.
These issues do not bother me very much as my third phone is still a galaxy s2 but every person is different, if it bothers you that much then in the end you can always think of the future and what phones it reserves, if you want the best in performance and image quality right now then this phones is the answear.
Best Regards!

Hey, i have a samsung galaxy s2 and just like you i had been struggling to get a proper phone with no overheating and the weird blue tint on the screen when you view the screen from different angles, i have noticed very few galaxy s2 without this blue shifting problem when viewed the screen from another side and i can explain why after this:
1) Ive swapped my phone 2 times now, the first, the second, the third and the manager phone all reproduce this issue, the screen looks just fine when viewed straigth but if you try to view it from another angle the screen will turn a bit to blue, it is most noticeable in white backgrounds.
Not my phone .
2) All of my three phones have blurring issues when in motion, you can clearly see it when the text is white and the background is black, altough this blurring is very small compared to the top of the line LCD screens its still there on all 3 phones so i can confirm this as normal.
not my phone
3) The 2 phones i had all had random overheating issues, this must have something to do with either a design flaw or lack of quality in programming the OS for the phone, this is also normal for your phone to happen as it happened in the last 2 of mines, i will check if it happens in the third too and will post back results in this thread.
Overheating NO but does get warm at times .
4) The speaker quality of the phone is at best, average, when the volume is set to max, some sounds like "pure tone" will distort just a bit, its very dissapointing in a phone this expensive, but then again samsung cannot be compared to sony in that area, i can also confirm this as normal.
Excellent headphone sound as good as i need/want .
But its user choice i have problems phone goes back to seller .
Somebody points out i have a problem that i cannot see but i have this problem as they say then unless i see it it is not a problem .

lol not your phone because u dont bother or dont know how to look for those problems, there are people in this forum who reported these issues, the point of this thread is to tell them the experience i had myself with it and to help them conclude that unfortunatelly it is normal .
Your phone will have that problem aswell since its how the phone is made, the only way for you to not overheat is to not use the apps i and some other ppl are using, and the only way for you to not have the blue tint when looking at different angles is your phone already having a slightly blueish white, independently of any angle viewed.

Well the guy has done some serious research on 4 phones out of the 5 million or is it 55 million sold .
He sees a problem on four so by definition you have been told YOU and the millions of others have a problem don't argue its a scientific test .
jje
Why couldn't this be added to the many other threads. Please stop speaking for every sgs2.
1- only time I can see any kind of blue tint is if my eye is literally at the charging port. Non issue here.
2- wtf are you talking about. No lag/blur whatsoever here. Only time I see anything considered lag is on the lockscreen but that's the CPU.
3-my phone gets warm when playing intensive games(samurai 2-ps1 emu) after playing a long time. I've had phone since release day and never have gotten uncomfortable hot. I also ran my cpu at 1.7 for 2 weeks using tegrak. Running at 1.5 with cognition rom now with no overheating.
4- I run a grooming salon with mostly dogs, cats and some birds. I listen to my 30gb of music from 9-6ish. I can clearly hear music from speaker over barking dogs all day. Volume at 30% with stock headphones. And this is over music/advertisement playing from loudspeaker. I do use dsl manager to add more base and also poweramp.
5. See number 1
6. Can't see a white pixel left right up or down the screen. What I thought was a dead pixel the first day of ownership quickly disappeared. I have no issues besides the useragent desktop default.
Please stop speaking for everyone. I think there's roughly 3+ million sgs2 sold, we would see more people having your issues.
Remember specially with forums people(noobs/trolls) with complaints typically post more in general section than user without. If you actually read thru threads there's not that many users having the issue.

That's harsh. There's a vocal minority that gets revved up about certain issues. It's real to them and I think they feel it is or should be to everyone else too. The ironic thing is when you look at the other dual-core phones the SGS2 has 1/10 the issues. Perfect's a great ideal but doesn't exist. It's always funny when people pick one feature from another phone and bash the SGS2 because it's not as good. Life doesn't work that way. If your Nokia camera's so great, swell. Than stick with a single core Symbian phone. Unless a do-it-yourself hardware kit is released that allows you to use a Nokia camera, SE display, Nexus Wi-Fi, and someone else's GPS you take the good with the bad. For the vast majority the SGS2's good way outweighs the bad and judge the phone on the sum of its parts. Different strokes for different folks.
no clue what you guys are trying to proove except that youre oblivious to these problems... its how the phone is made, theres no such thing as oh they probably made a worse manufacturing process on ur phone screen, you just cant notice it because u dont know how to look for it...
PS for anyone who says they cant see any blurr in motion, if u cant see it on a 2msgtg lcd screen then you will surely not know how to look for it in this oled phone as its alot less noticeable.
Ive never said yellow tint phones were normal, i said that blue tint when changing angle of view is.

Actually, i thought of starting a thread named something like "The perfect phone" where you add different parts/hardware/software from different phones and build your ideal phone. Obviously, i won't, although would be fun to see people's opinions about the perfect screen, perfect camera, etc.
P.S. Thank God i have a poor eyesight and i'm such an ignorant, this way i can consider my phone to be very close to perfection

May i add another issue to your list ? Out of the 3 million units sold, some have psychotic owners. Fortunately, problem is not that widespread as the yellow-tint issue.

thanks, glad youve found it usefull, that was the whole point of the thread, to make people rest knowning that these are not faults experienced only by them, it happens on all phones, even though someone mentioned there are 5 million of those phones sold, seeying 4 random samsung galaxy s2 phones with the exact same list of "issues" is more than just a "coincidence" as a user pointed out.
Ive also specified why some very rare phones have no blue tint visible.
PS: Even though i see an updated version of gun bros today i can still sense it heating up a bit, im not letting this one reaching the point of overheating but if anyone is interested in knowing where it overheats, it happens mostly on the upper side of the phone leaving the down side only a bit warm, to avoid this overheating what i do is go to applications and exit all of them, go to ram manager and clearing it up, this prevents my phone from overheating in that game to insane levels.
added gun bros, pocket legends, wifi conectivity issue and light sensing to the list.

[Q] Poor screen uniformity (+yellow tint) - brightness and colour - Feedback Please!

So the Nexus 4’s potentially quality screen has crappy screen issues. There. I said it.
What I mean is that it’s a GREAT screen in some ways (resolution mainly) but it’s let down by what seems to be noticeably poor quality/manufacturing.
Why do I say this? Well, it’s been my experience that the Nexus 4 (in general) has a chronic problem with significantly poor screen uniformity for both colour and brightness. I ordered my first phone on the 13th December 2012 and as soon as it arrived I was pretty excited at finally getting a new phone (upgrading from Galaxy S1 the N4 is a beautiful beast).
When I booted it up and started using it I immediately got a sinking feeling as I realised that the bottom third of the phone had a slight but easily noticeable yellow gradient tint to it along with the left edge and the right edge was grey/dingy about a half a centimetre in. The left side and bottom third were also noticeably brighter than the right side of the phone. I’ve illustrated this in the attached pic. It’s all fairly subtle – but it’s definitely there and is easy to see.
Since I use (like most people I guess) quite a few apps that have white or solid colour backgrounds (gmail, currents, google books, email, messaging, chrome etc) – this lack of uniformity really made things look crappy in a not spectacular but just “sub-par” way unless I was viewing something which was a picture or video or filled the screen where it wasn’t noticeable.
So I called Google Play and told them about the problem and they arranged for a return.
When I got my replacement I booted it up and immediately, even before getting past the X logo animation noticed a big spot of light bleed at the top right. *Very* easy to see and my heart sank.
There on in I opened up the Mail app and closed the keyboard so I got a nice, mainly white screen. Again I noticed the same issue with the yellowing tint to the bottom and left but this time it was *more* noticeable.
To cut this long story short I’ve now sent back 3 devices for this issue, about to send back my 4th and my 5th should arrive tomorrow. I’m not holding out much hope.
I’ve seen this exact same issue on about 4 other Nexus 4’s in shops in the UK (Carphone Warehouse, O2) and while there looked at the HTC One X, iPhone 5 and the new Lumia phones from Nokia running Windows Phone 8. Those phones in particular (with LCD screen tech too) didn’t have these issues *at all* as far as I could tell. In fact the HTC One X screen looked to me to be flawless, as did the Lumia 820 and 920. If I could put the screen from the One X into the N4, I would. Sadly, not gonna happen. Sadly I don’t want the One X but do want an N4. P.S. I know LG manufacture their own displays.
Now I’m NOT claiming to speak for ALL N4’s (why I’ve started this thread) but I do believe that it cannot be a coincidence that ALL the N4’s *except one* showed this issue. I believe that LG simply manufacture the screens in such a way that they invariably have these tinting and brightness uniformity inconsistencies and that because most people don’t care, they don’t care.
********What I’d like is to ask if people with an N4 they’re happy with could do the following and provide the following info:
*Open the Mail app and close the keyboard (press down arrow at bottom). Look at the white of the screen and see if there is any edge or part of the screen that is noticeably *brighter* or *more yellow*. Are there any areas of the screen that are noticeably darker or duller? Do this for different brightnesses (low and fairly high). What do you see? Any yellow tint? Any inconsistency in brightness? All ok? Perfectly even?********
TL;DR: I’ve had 4 Nexus 4’s from Google Play all with the same yellow tint and brightness uniformity issues. Very noticeable. Not acceptable to me for a device that displays a lot of white “pages” and solid colours. Other phones (that I don’t want) do not have this issue (annoying). Please can you give feedback from your phone.
PLEASE NOTE:
Other threads discussing the “yellow tint” issue invariably attract trolls in their varying forms.
DO NOT reply to this thread if you simply want to say any of the following:
1) I don’t see a problem with mine therefore I don’t understand what you’re talking about.
2) I don’t see a problem with mine therefore you’re imagining a problem with yours.
3) I don’t see a problem with mine therefore you’re expecting a “perfect” screen and they don’t exist.
4) There are more important things in life to worry about. (A: I’m not “worried”, screen uniformity is important to me, get over it.)
5) I see a slight yellowing but I don’t care therefore you shouldn’t care. There are more important things in life to worry about.) [see above]
The attached illustration is slightly "exaggerated" to make sure the effect is reproduced for all screens. Not by all that much though.
UPDATE: 31/01/2013: Well I've received *another* N4 replacement today and lo and behold the exact *same issue*. With this one I'm going to wait it out at least a week and see if it improves. I *really* want an N4 as in every other way it's truly a great piece of tech. Pray for me guys!

I've had tint issues with all three handsets. First two it didn't disappear after use. This third handset SEEMS to have gotten a little better after a week.
All three had light bleed. First one was least noticeable, last two including the current have two blobs of light bleed in the exact same places along the top of the LCD.
It's almost as if something during manufacturing (screw tightness?) has caused it on both handsets. They are both 212K and revision 11.
It's annoying me and I may do one final RMA once I see what this new wave of devices brings.
mine's fine.
I did what you asked, OP and I'm not seeing and unevenness, yellow tint, or brightness issues (aside from auto-brightness being stupidly low).
The only issue I have with my screen is poor colors. I have a One X and an iPhone 5 that I sometimes compare with my N4's screen and it's shockingly apparent that the N4's screen has colors that just aren't worthy of a top-tier device. The resolution is nice and all, but I like it when the colors are nice and accurate. It's most easy to tell when comparing images of people and looking at their skin. Now I'm no anthropologist, but I have a pretty solid grasp of what skin looks like. The One X is probably the best at representing things the way they look IRL, followed by the iPhone 5. I don't know if it's just my N4 or other people have the same issue. I've tried using apps to adjust the color (FauxClock with Faux's kernel, to be specific), but nothing makes it look quite as nice as my other phones.
I guess you never asked about the second part, but there it is.
I had that issue when I received my device, Used kernel setting to rectify the problem but after 4-5 days of use it gone away. Now device is perfect.
I recommend you to stay with it for 3-4 days before returning it and check.

All the phones I've had have been 301K and they've all had the same issue with yellow tint/backlight inconsistency in a very similar way. I'll have sent back 4 N4's if I decide to keep the current one! I think you're probably right about the screw tightness or some such other minor thing during manufacturing. It's not like a viewing angle problem. It does look like something to do with assembly in particular. Please do let me/us know how you get on and how things work out.

I used FauxClock on my previous device (sat here waiting to go back) and it did seem to improve the situation slightly - but then since the screen isn't uniform, it reduced the yellow where it was yellow but then made it too "blue" on the rest of the screen. I really hope that this yellow tint is a "glue" issue or something that will even out through repeated use due to heating/cooling - i.e. expanding and contracting which somehow settles things down. I'll keep this one about a week and see what happens. Fingers crossed!
Thanks for your feedback guys!

^ this is pretty much all I can say.
Every nexus 4 phone I handled had a slightly yellower screen at the bottom. For me its barely noticeable, not as yellow as it is in your illustration.
They all seem to have that same issue, along with light bleeding across the top edge.
You can keep RMAing if you're not tired of that .. But you will not receive a fully uniform no matter what.
If screen uniformity is important for you get one of the above phones you mentioned.

Thanks for the info, that's interesting to know. Out of interest, how many have you handled? Going by some comments on XDA and around the web regarding this issue, you'd think that the yellow tint was only on a handful of handsets and an isolated quirk, not as I suspect and you seem to suggest, a common trait of the N4.

Well,
I ordered three of them, all screens looked identical with the exact same issues: some yellowing at the bottom with a light bleed over the top edge (especially top right corner). I had to RMA 2 out of the 3 due to severe screen issues (screen flickering and dead pixels). Received 2 new units, screens have the exact same issue. I have 2 friends with N4s and their screens are like that too. It's almost not noticeable.

Does the light bleed appear like small blobs from the top edge?
My worst is the top left, about an inch in. Then there's another smaller blob nearer the right hand side. Little bit leakage top right and top left, but its worst along the actual taskbar.
I will take a picture tomorrow.

My first nexus 4 (rev 10) has perfect whites except the bottom of the screen would turn yellow after warming. All of the 4 RMA devices I've recieved (rev 11) don't have this issue EXCEPT all the rev 11s are calibrated horribly leading to the entire screen being yellower than my rev 10 unit. The screens are uniform, however, I just wish they calibrated the phones like they did with the rev 10.
The new rev 11s have a calibration problem while my rev 10 has a glue problem.
The new rev 11s also have a dimmer screen than my rev 10. I kinda just want them to send a perfect rev 10 to me.
Interesting because calibration issues affect the whole screen. If any part of the screen isn't the same "tint" as another part and its noticeable then this isn't something that can be fixed with calibration. Calibration can only save a uniformly "yellow" or "blue" tinted screen. To that end I wish mine was uniformly yellow. Mine is a rev 11 and I'm on my second day with it and hoping the bottom and left yellow tint fades soon and that it's just glue. I've tried Fauxclock and applying various screen tweaks with a previous similar phone and it helped somewhat but there's nothing can be done about unevenness in the tint really unless its glue and it dries.

Nexus 4 annoying visible IPS sensors

Hey guys,
I've had my nexus 4 for a week now and I am super pleased by it. The phone runs like a dream.
The only issue I seem to be having is that I can see the IPS sensors even with the screen on!.
I'm talking about the little transparent-gray squares all over it, not about the super awesome dots that you can see with direct sunlight.
This is flipping me out!
Is anybody else having this problem with it?
I can't appreciate the beautiful screen because of this.
Also, when displaying single color frames specially dark ones, like on the clock app , the colors are not really solid.
I get this vertical stripes that are approximate to the color but not quite it.
Im posting a screenshot but I don't think that youll be able to notice it since it may be a hardware problem.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
That's a hardware thing, not visible in screenshots. You'd need to take an actual picture.
Are you referring to the dot grid that is visible in direct sunlight? Everyone has is. It's because of the fact that the screen is integrated into the glass.
I think it looks kind of cool but that might just be me.
Edit: Gotta read the whole thread first I guess you're not talking about the dots. I have no idea what you're talking about then.
Sent from my Paranoid Nexus 4 using Tapatalk²
Question to the OP. Do YOU see anything wrong with those images, or is it a hardware problem? I can't see any difference between your screen shots and my phone.
Damn it man, now i see them too -.-
I went to the clock app, and i can see some stripes on the left but mine are vertical.

Haha Dude that's the digitizer. Don't worry. It's all cool.
Chill out people.. Its just the digitizer that you can see, so close to the screen for better touchscreen responsiveness. The most likely reason you can still see it with your device screen on is that you have your brightness too low.. Put it up
even amoled screen are also the same

When I first got my Nexus4 the weird screen was the first thing that popped out at me. Between the visible digitizer matrix that glints when it catches the sun wrong, to the odd rectangles that can be seen behind the screen I was initially bummed and thought about returning the phone. It doesn't even bother me anymore
This is my 8th android device and the first one that has a funky screen like this, but it really isnt a big deal. Under 95 percent of conditions it looks really nice
I have been able to see the digitizer on every single capacitive screen i have ever owned.
@David_Azar I have to agree.. initially I was disgusted by how prominent the digitzer pattern was, I've never had ANY screen show it as much as the Nexus 4 does.
However, the vertical stripes you're referencing is commonly referred to as "banding". I have this on my Nexus 4 as well, most visible on grays (especially darker grays).
I have been doing some research and I believe the banding issue will reduce over time. If you check your screen when displaying a white background at max brightness, such as gmail or chrome browser, you should see a slight yellowing of the whites. It appears this can be due to the adhesive they used to glue the digitizer to the screen not curing completely. After several weeks of use, the heat from the processor will help cure the adhesive causing the yellow to disappear after a while.
I cannot say for certain that it will completely resolve the banding issue, but I have noticed that the worst banding is in the areas where the yellow tint is most prominent. I have also been testing my display every day to monitor any changes, and I am happy to report I do see a minor reduction in both the yellowing and banding (I've only had my Nexus 4 for five days so far).
Give it a couple of weeks, run some intensive games to get the processor to heat up every day. Keep brightness at max for the next few weeks and let us know if you see any improvements.
As for the pattern of the digitizer in the glass.. it's not going anywhere so get used to it. I don't like it much either but it seems to be less prominent once you start becoming used to it.
Good luck, let us know how it goes
Hey man,
Curiously enough I've never had the yellow tints everybody's complaining about. I'm used to The digitizer matrix ( rectangles) buy at first it was really weird. I was coming from a non HD display ( a RAZR Maxx) so naturally, I expected that my N4 would have a perfect screen.
I've had my N4 for almost two months now and the banding has not reduced. I made some research over the last month and I found that with some kernel settings for saturation the banding is reduced. I'm not sure if it is really reduced or the clear gray tones that have the banding just don't appear anymore because of the saturation.
The Trinity kernel reduces this a bit but like I said, your screen will look life a f*** ing AMOLED.
Right now I'm using the kernel provided by the 123 FAUX CLOCK project. I'm using the LG factory presets and for the most part I'm really happy with the screen. If you or anybody else comes up with a different solution, let others know on this thread.
Peace brothers.

Just for kicks, if you stop by a T-mobile location compare your screen with the display model and see if you can spot the yellow tint on either screen (on a white background)
I will update this thread with my phone's progress (or lack thereof if it stops improving).
I get banding issues also, more noticeable in grey backgrounds; but I can I see them in other colors if I look hard enough
I use a dark black theme to avoid looking at those bands
I can say this. I've had a ton of devices..latest was s3 and I'll just say I'm stoked to have IPS over pen tile. Just knowing HD was plagued by this alone was enough for me to ditch Sammy all together especially after seeing rgb on note 2 was no better. This is my opinion of Samsung's design ...I know why they chose it but I can't and won't buy another amoled until they get another tech in order. So now I say kudos on IPS but I'm surely a screen purest and I found these hardware screen/digitizer artifacts you speak of and to me its so much less noticeable. Your not alone. You just like good clean HD like me. Lol HTC one should be a nice one to check out...

That would be a little like kicking myself in the nuts. Nothing good can come out of that.
If I spot the yellow tints once, then I will always look for it. I hate doing that with the banding but it's an automatic thing.
I dunno why but it really bums me out whenever I have a problem with my phone.
Let's keep posting of someone finds a solution or something .

I've got the quite visible digitizer rectangles too. In anything less than a dark room if the phone is not on a perfect angle they are visible.
I can't really tell if "everyone's" is like that, or just some are "worse" than others.

Here's an image with them visible with the screen on (and at an angle) - difficult to take a photo of - but much easier to see with the naked eye.

Few more with the screen off.

Went and checked out an Optimus G today (Nexus 4 isn't actually released in Japan). Given that a Nexus 4 is just a remodeled Optimus G I thought it'd be worth comparing screens. The digitizer matrix is barely visible on the G I was looking at with the screen OFF. With it on you could almost see it at some angles. It is much more visible on my Nexus 4 which you can almost always see with the screen off and at an angle and often with the screen on.
I'm leaning towards my phone being "less than a perfect example of a Nexus 4" and not the "norm" at the moment.
they are much more noticeable in Rev 11 devices and they where barely visible in Rev 10, i am sure that there is a technical reason behind it

See that explains it a little more. Not sure I see the logic in putting a screen with pretty decent viewing angles on a device and then sticking a really visible digitizer on it though.
I've contacted the seller and I guess I'll wait and see what they say in regard to it.

Nexus 7 2013 screen light leak on top side

I noticed there is a light leak in the Nexus 7 2013 when playing games with dark scenes. Here's a photo of mine:
http://oi41.tinypic.com/2uzqbgn.jpg
That specific area of bleed is present to some degree on most units.
That's my problem too.
Where can i get their support email? I'm thinking if i can keep it for awhile then return to them for replacement after 2 months. Can i do that?
@scandiun will you send it back?

How about a picture of a "dark game" where you see this? Also, is your brightness all the way up? Put your brightness where you usually have it and show picture of real world use where you see this..
I think the whole light bleed thing is always blown out of proportion. Many people go to a black screen and then turn the brightness all the way up and think they have a giant issue when the truth is most would never see it at all under normal use.

Of course I'm displaying a black image with brightness to the maximum. However, with brightness to the medium it's still noticeable on games like Mystery Room which have a black frame on dialog scenes. I tried to take a photo of it but the center of the screen gets oversaturated so does not reflect what you are seen in person.
In the iPad that doesn't happen, so if there's a difference there's a reason for it, and the reason is lower standards.

A LOT of movies and tv shows have several dark scenes, some are all night time/dark. If you have even a little light bleed you're going to notice it. And don't be an apologist and say something like "it's a tablet, not a tv", even Google promotes it as a device for media consumption. No one should accept light bleed.

I've noticed light bleed on top of my tablet, but it didn't bother me because it was faint and only noticeable, like you said, on a black screen. The build quality is still bad regardless if it bothers me or not, and I would think it's something to get people noticed about so it's fixed rather than brushing it off like it doesn't matter.

I don't think it's something fixable by software. Rather seems the physical location of the backlight which of course you can't change.

I realize this, I think the quality control from ASUS is crap. When I say to get it fixed, I meant for future production models.
So for people that have returned theirs and waiting to buy another one down the line it wouldn't be a problem for them.
Might not even happen if people don't realize or make a fuss about it. Personally, the static sound issue bothers me more than this slight light bleed.

I would rather go with a Samsung tablet, but they are still behind in terms of screen quality, for example the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 or 8.0. So I will wait.
Anybody can confirm that the Galaxy Tabs don't have this issue?
nexus 7 fix
Mine was like this but I managed to sort it.....here is how
Get a mobile phone mobile repair kit from Amazon or eBay for a couple of quid, as long as it has a large flat pry bar in then that's all you need.
You may need to research this bit, but you tube how to take the back cover off nexus 7 2013 and follow their instructions to do so.
Once the back is off loosen all the screws you can see by one or two turns, lay the nexus on a flat surface and tighten the screws up pretty tight, usually a little tighter than they were before, turn the nexus on but be careful and run a light bleed app. Check any areas where there is light bleed, re undo the screws in the area and slightly bend the chassis (very lightly!!!) And let settle then re do up the screws, keep doing this until most of the bleed has gone. Finally, get the back case, slightly bend the case in on itself as with mine it was pulling more in one direction making the nexus chassis bend slightly. Please treat gently, don't be rough at all.then pop it all back together starting from the charging port making sure its lines up correctly.....and bingo, much less bleed.
The bleed seems to be because the chassis is very flexible and the screen is solid, and its just a matter of the screen 'settling' in the right place I guess.
I hope this helps people out.
If your not technical then I wouldn't try it as you could easily short something out, but it worked for me very well
Good luck

I agree that quality control is crap. But that's what we get when we buy a tablet at this price point. Is it wrong to expect perfection when we pay our hard earned money to companies like Asus? No. But realistically, how many of us can say that our tablet is literally perfect?
I honestly feel that the Nexus line of tablets will never be perfect. They will always have some sort of issues. Asus just doesn't care because they keep selling millions of units. Unless there is a national boycott of buying Nexus tablets the issues will always be there.

The screen itself is not that bad. It's better screen that ipad mini retina.
Mine has light bleed aswell on top center of the screen but as it was stated, it doesn't bother me since it's not noticeable during everyday usage. Only time I can see it perfectly is during booting where the screen is totally black.
Now, I also believe this is the case regarding all the other occurencies and people just blow it out of proportion.
Also, if it is that bad, just return it, or post on the appropriate threads. There are already millions of threads here and everywhere else about this...
It's annoying.

In the end it's not that important, it's much worse the sound issue.
