Hey, i have a samsung galaxy s2 and just like some of you i had been struggling to get a proper phone with no overheating and the weird blue tint on the screen when you view the screen from different angles, i have noticed very few galaxy s2 without this blue shifting problem when viewed the screen from another side and i can explain why at 5):
1) Ive swapped my phone 2 times now, the first, the second, the third and the manager phone all reproduce this issue, the screen looks just fine when viewed straigth but if you try to view it from another angle the screen will turn a bit to blue, it is most noticeable in white backgrounds.
Since i have tested 4 random phones with exactly the same problem i can confirm this "feature" as normal.
2) All of my three phones have blurring issues when in motion, you can clearly see it when the text is white and the background is black, altough this blurring is very small compared to the top of the line LCD screens its still there on all 3 phones so i can confirm this as normal.
3) The 2 phones i had all had random overheating issues, this must have something to do with either a design flaw or lack of quality in programming the OS for the phone, this is also normal for your phone to happen as it happened in the last 3 of mines, the only way ive found to avoid this issue is simply exit all applications, clear memory ram and then start the app, this semms to prevent my phone to reaching insane levels of heat.
Heres a list of apps some people and i reported to overheat the phone:
Gun Bros - Checked
Pocket Legends - Unchecked
4) The speaker quality of the phone is at best, average, when the volume is set to max, some sounds like "pure tone" will distort just a bit, its very dissapointing in a phone this expensive, but then again samsung cannot be compared to sony in that area, i can also confirm this as normal.
5) The phones ive seen which did not have the blue tint issues when the phone is viewed from other angles had another problem when compared to the ones that actually did: The phone that did have blue tint issues, when viewed directly has very good Whites while the phone which does not have the blue tint issues when viewed from another angles even when looked at it directly it already has a shade of blue, so that might explain why this problem wasnt detected in that phone.
6) When you view in a browser some images, you will notice that on your left corner of the screen there is a white pixel, dont worry, it is not a dead pixel, to confirm this all u need to do is to view the picture horizontaly, notice how the white pixel changed sides with the top left corner?
According to BarriH_GEG, It's there to keep a service alive in support of hardware acceleration in the stock browser. They chose white because the majority of web pages are white or lighter colors
7) Poor wifi conectivity while holding the back of the phone with both hands, it happened in all 3 of my phones aswell, this is also probably normal.
8) The screen displays a slight shift of color at the left side of the screen, its very hard to notice but its there, people refer to it as "yellow tint", for more information please visit this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079444
Thanks to: Sp1tfire for letting me know about this issue, i cannot confirm if this issue is normal or not for all phones as ive only done this test on my third phone (which also semms to slightly change hue a bit in that thread OP website, its almost unoticeable but its there).
9) When viewing white objects with the camera on low to medium light condition there is a pink circle noticed in the middle of the picture, i havent tested this with all 3 phones but from i can tell in this thread it happens on all of them:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1079444
Thanks to: Sp1tfire for pointing this issue also.
10) A bit less significant but still noteworthy: if you change your brightness setting in a dark room or area from auto to manual and put it at max, exit the brightness setting and try to put it back to automatic, you will notice that its stuck at max even though it should drop it alot, to fix this all you need to do is to flash a light source at the upper front side of your phone and then take it away, it will now work again.
Notes: If the phone is viewed directly and has a blue tint on it, it is broken, if it displays of red tint or yellow tint its also broken and you should trade it if it bothers you, make sure to scan for dead pixels by using full screen images of blues, reds, greens, black and white. If the image is pure to those colors and theres 1 or more pixel displaying something differently that means the phone has dead pixels and should be also swapped.
Hope this helps some people to not waste their time like i did, i feel a bit disapointed because my first phone apparently had nothing wrong with it, so at least i can help you not to make the same mistakes as i did.
After swapping my phone 2 times and finding these issues, i would surelly want to trade it for an alternative! but unfortunatelly reality came to me everytime the shop manager asked: "Do you want the same model or a different one?" Then it made me think, what model? Sure Xperia Arc and Play are cool phones, but they dont come even close to the performance of this phone and honestly none other dual core phones have OLED screen and even compared to those this phone is alot better in performance, so i came to realise there was really no choice, if i wanted the best in performance and the best in image quality then this phone was, is and will be the answear for time to come.
These issues do not bother me very much as my third phone is still a galaxy s2 but every person is different, if it bothers you that much then in the end you can always think of the future and what phones it reserves, if you want the best in performance and image quality right now then this phones is the answear.
Best Regards!

lol not your phone because u dont bother or dont know how to look for those problems, there are people in this forum who reported these issues, the point of this thread is to tell them the experience i had myself with it and to help them conclude that unfortunatelly it is normal .
Your phone will have that problem aswell since its how the phone is made, the only way for you to not overheat is to not use the apps i and some other ppl are using, and the only way for you to not have the blue tint when looking at different angles is your phone already having a slightly blueish white, independently of any angle viewed.

Well the guy has done some serious research on 4 phones out of the 5 million or is it 55 million sold .
He sees a problem on four so by definition you have been told YOU and the millions of others have a problem don't argue its a scientific test .
jje
Why couldn't this be added to the many other threads. Please stop speaking for every sgs2.
1- only time I can see any kind of blue tint is if my eye is literally at the charging port. Non issue here.
2- wtf are you talking about. No lag/blur whatsoever here. Only time I see anything considered lag is on the lockscreen but that's the CPU.
3-my phone gets warm when playing intensive games(samurai 2-ps1 emu) after playing a long time. I've had phone since release day and never have gotten uncomfortable hot. I also ran my cpu at 1.7 for 2 weeks using tegrak. Running at 1.5 with cognition rom now with no overheating.
4- I run a grooming salon with mostly dogs, cats and some birds. I listen to my 30gb of music from 9-6ish. I can clearly hear music from speaker over barking dogs all day. Volume at 30% with stock headphones. And this is over music/advertisement playing from loudspeaker. I do use dsl manager to add more base and also poweramp.
5. See number 1
6. Can't see a white pixel left right up or down the screen. What I thought was a dead pixel the first day of ownership quickly disappeared. I have no issues besides the useragent desktop default.
Please stop speaking for everyone. I think there's roughly 3+ million sgs2 sold, we would see more people having your issues.
Remember specially with forums people(noobs/trolls) with complaints typically post more in general section than user without. If you actually read thru threads there's not that many users having the issue.

That's harsh. There's a vocal minority that gets revved up about certain issues. It's real to them and I think they feel it is or should be to everyone else too. The ironic thing is when you look at the other dual-core phones the SGS2 has 1/10 the issues. Perfect's a great ideal but doesn't exist. It's always funny when people pick one feature from another phone and bash the SGS2 because it's not as good. Life doesn't work that way. If your Nokia camera's so great, swell. Than stick with a single core Symbian phone. Unless a do-it-yourself hardware kit is released that allows you to use a Nokia camera, SE display, Nexus Wi-Fi, and someone else's GPS you take the good with the bad. For the vast majority the SGS2's good way outweighs the bad and judge the phone on the sum of its parts. Different strokes for different folks.
no clue what you guys are trying to proove except that youre oblivious to these problems... its how the phone is made, theres no such thing as oh they probably made a worse manufacturing process on ur phone screen, you just cant notice it because u dont know how to look for it...
PS for anyone who says they cant see any blurr in motion, if u cant see it on a 2msgtg lcd screen then you will surely not know how to look for it in this oled phone as its alot less noticeable.
Ive never said yellow tint phones were normal, i said that blue tint when changing angle of view is.

Actually, i thought of starting a thread named something like "The perfect phone" where you add different parts/hardware/software from different phones and build your ideal phone. Obviously, i won't, although would be fun to see people's opinions about the perfect screen, perfect camera, etc.
P.S. Thank God i have a poor eyesight and i'm such an ignorant, this way i can consider my phone to be very close to perfection

May i add another issue to your list ? Out of the 3 million units sold, some have psychotic owners. Fortunately, problem is not that widespread as the yellow-tint issue.

thanks, glad youve found it usefull, that was the whole point of the thread, to make people rest knowning that these are not faults experienced only by them, it happens on all phones, even though someone mentioned there are 5 million of those phones sold, seeying 4 random samsung galaxy s2 phones with the exact same list of "issues" is more than just a "coincidence" as a user pointed out.
Ive also specified why some very rare phones have no blue tint visible.
PS: Even though i see an updated version of gun bros today i can still sense it heating up a bit, im not letting this one reaching the point of overheating but if anyone is interested in knowing where it overheats, it happens mostly on the upper side of the phone leaving the down side only a bit warm, to avoid this overheating what i do is go to applications and exit all of them, go to ram manager and clearing it up, this prevents my phone from overheating in that game to insane levels.
added gun bros, pocket legends, wifi conectivity issue and light sensing to the list.

Has anyone come across their X1 having a screen that is fading in the top right-hand corner? it looks as if it's been pressed really hard there on mine.
I've had so many X1s now and I'm really fed-up of it, Sony Ericsson, Windows Mobile (to add to all Windows OSs really) and my operator, O2, for being the World's biggest morons. The one I got today seemed perfect for once and actually put together properly and, apart from a tiny, hardly noticeable scratch on the back cover (for which I have another cover as a spare anyway) I was pretty happy with it. The screen is really bugging me though and this is the second or third one where the screen is quite a bit worse than others have been.
I'm unsure of what to do, there's no other phones that I have any interest in and I'm sick to the teeth of O2 and this fault riddled phone too. I've only just gotten used to the fact that the illumination lights don't work properly on any X1s!
I beleive you are referring to the white light bleeding thru in the corners? This is something simular to what happens on some monitors. I don't think it gets worse and it can only be noticed when a black background in showing in the corners when you look at a picture or play a movie.
I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. It is the most visible when you're turning it on during the "EXPERIA" screen, huh? I have that, too.

This is exactly it! Sorry, couldn't remember to call it bleeding lol.
I'm almost certain I'll return this X1...shame because it's the first without any other issues.
omfg i totally forgot abt this when i sent it to the svc ctr 2 days ago!
i only complained abt the buttons getting less responsive. lol. had this screen issue since day 2 but nvr been a big prob.
damn...
Called "light leakage" elsewhere
Personally its only noticeable at all with a completely black screen (like the Xperia load screen mentioned above) ...and completely invisible the rest of the time.
So I barely notice it and it doesn't bother me

Definately...I just like a new device to be perfect as it should be.
I can still notice the bleeding a bit during normal use and it's really irritating. I don't get why it's just in the right-hand corner and worse on some X1s than it is on others.
SAMOLED+ Pixel Response Time and Touch Screen Discussion & My Review of These Parts.
Hey all, I wanted to start a thread to have a discussion about these two things that are my only disappointments in this phone.
Let me start by saying I think this phone is awesome, and yes I feel there are a few other faults on the phone (lockscreen delay when running off the battery due to the CPU taking a second to kick in, weak GPS/wifi signal sometimes, heavy banding on gradients etc) But those are software issues and I know in the near future Samsung/Devs will sort this out.
But I had some big complaints that aren't (still I hope not) software issues. Firstly;
- Response Time.
By this I mean when you buy a new monitor and the response time is listed as 4ms or whatever. This is the time the pixel takes to make a full change. A slow response time will cause ghosting. And that's exactly a issue that the Samsung Galaxy SII faces. Ghosting.
I've gone through 4 replacement SII's for various reasons, and on all of them they ghosted. So it's not just my phone. Samsung bizarrely states the response time is 0.001ms which would be there would be no ghosting at all. However there is, quite a bit actually, by my testing the screen is actually around 6-8ms.
I want to see if anyone else notices it. I know there's been a couple of threads on this but I want to see if the majority of people notice this. Here's how to test, go onto white page with black text on, and then scroll down the page at a moderate pace, not to fast not too slow, try it at different speeds as well just in case you don't get it right.
The easiest way I find to do this is use the inbuilt stock news app, load up any story and it'll give you a long white page with black text you can scroll through. As you may notice if you got a decent set of eyes on you, the text will leave a trail. Also known as ghosting. To me, I find this absolutely unacceptable on such high end device.
- Colour
Also, as it's been widely reported and has been noticeable on all my GSII's, the colour temperature is very 'cool', nowhere near the perfect 6500k. As a result, white's look very blue. This is fine and you hardly notice it on it's own, however when I'm using the device at my PC, which I use on a 32" IPS panel TV I professionally calibrated, the whites on the GSII look more blue than the ocean! Technically this is a software problem and can easily be sorted when custom roms come along but jeez, this is some bad stock colour calibration.
Also when you tilt the display, the viewing angles are generally very good, however tilting the display by pretty much any angle adds an extra blue tint to the screen on an already blueish screen.
I'm an absolutely screen quality perfectionist so these points really get to me. Especially considering this is such a high end device.
Overall I'd give the display a 6.5/10.
After the colour temperature has been sorted, I'll give it a 7.5/10.
If the ghosting can get minimized somehow even slightly through software on top of that, I'd give it an 8.5/10.
Secondly;
- Touch Screen
Now we all know about the movement deadzone/threshold on the touch screen which is massively annoying, but hopefully that'll get fixed in the near future. But What I'm going to complain about is the low sensitivity of the touch screen is the best way I can describe it.
On my HTC Desire, I can tap the screen ridiculously lightly and quick, and the device will register the input, absolutely no questions asked. Absolutely brilliant.
However on the GSII the sensitivity seems to be a lot lower, I can tap the screen lightly and quickly and the screen won't register the touch at all. This is pretty damn annoying as sometimes I just tap the screen lightly normally and I have to retap things. Not very often but still. I wish the device was as sensitive as the HTC Desire.
In it's current state I'd give the touch screen an 8/10.
If the movement deadzone and sensitivity got fixed, it'd be a 10/10.
Now I'm sure I had more to write about but I've forgotten now. I'll edit it into the post if I can think of the other things.
Now as I said, I think the GSII is a smashing phone, sure there are a lot of niggles at the minute, but I know they'll get sorted soon. Just the points I've outlined in this thread are things I'm scared won't get sorted. But you never know, I'm really hoping they can get sorted/do get sorted.
As I said I've had 4 Galaxy S2's all had the above issues, and I've used 2 other S2's from friends who also have these issues, so it's widespread, I'm just curious if people actually notice it.
I've added a poll to the thread regarding these issues. Please don't lie to yourself about this stuff, if you notice it, please answer honestly
I honestly hadnt noticed any of this stuff, i even watched a video of the deadzone and couldnt replicate it myself. I also think the touch response is fine you must have a very light finger/thumb!
The ghosting i hadnt noticed probly because i dont read text as im scrolling i tend to go a page at a time and the fact that im too taken back with the smoothness that pages do scroll.
The blue tint you guessed it i hadnt noticed but then again its not often i hold my phone up to specially tuned monitors.. Then again maybe theres a reason for it maybe it helps reduce glare in sunlight, then again maybe im talking aload of ****e!
no offence but you sound like you could moan for england! chill out and focus on the things it does do well and you may notice the negatives less
Personally....I think your nuts. This is the best screen ever on a phone. I have none of those issues, the touch screen perfectly responsive, my whites are white as white can be. You keep getting your phone from the same supplier and that leads me to be what the problem is. mine is perfect in every way. lucky me I guess

Nah it's just I'm very picky when it comes to screens. And I definitely expect the best on such a high end device, unfortunately the SGSII falls abit short on this.
It's still a great device. Really wish I didn't notice this sort of stuff haha.

Best screen on a phone possibly. It's not the best screen ever though, it's good don't get me wrong, but not the best.
And I assure you, your device has everything that I outlined in my original post, it's just down to the user if they notice it or not. When I used my friends Galaxy SII's (who both got it from different places to me and each other) I asked them about this stuff and they had no idea what I was on about, so I thought my phone was faulty and I had a look at their GSII's and theirs have the same problems aswell, they just don't notice them. (They did after I pointed it out though muwhahah)
I must not have a sgs2. Maybe its because mine is from first batch but I have none of your listed issues. After 4 devices, it cant be samsungs fault.
Heh, guys every SGSII have these issues, I'm not arguing that, was merely checking to see how many people notice these issues (not many in the grand scheme of things apparently) there's quite a lot of reports of these problems so it's just down to the user

I guess I have horrible standards. No shadowning on my phone.
The ghosting and blue-ish colortemperature I noticed right from the start. But to be honest: I really dont care. At least the ghosting is nothing which stands out of the crowd... all of them have it ... HTC, LG, Apple. The only reason you don't notice it as much, is the lower contrast on the other displays.
As for the sensitivity: It's a little lower than with my htc hd2, BUT I'm actually glad it is. The sensitivity on the HTC phones is ridiculously high. You don't even have to touch the screen and you end up clicking something, which can be quite annoying sometimes. On the SGS2 I never had any missclicks, nor did I have any non-responsivenesses. Perfect setup for my taste.
I think all of the average joe out there probably doesn't care about all this minor issues. You must have the intention to find the fault of the phone in order to get what you want to find but do you think most of us would be doing this? Haha.. Tbh I don't really care as long as the phone does what I want without falling apart. lol..
Yeah I was a bit surprised by the ghosting, having seen the response time claims, but neither that nor the colour temp (on 'movie') have really bothered me so far.
What has irked me a bit is the image sharpness. On a site like m.engadget.com the coloured text on white background has a dark outline all around it, which to me looks horrible. Anyone else noticed that?
I think the ghosting issue is due to the low fresh rate of the touch screen. It's lower than 60HZ.
When you scroll the screen, the animation is not smooth enough,so you see the ghosting.
It's more of a visual persistence issue.
I remember when some choppy animation showed in CRT,I can see ghosting.
Never the less, when your finger leave the touch screen, let it scrolling itself, you can see the "ghosting" would be less noticible.
But you can still see it,that's because of 60HZ refresh rate of the Display.
I just wondering if there is any way to change the fresh rate of the touch screen.
What are you doing that's causing ghosting issues? There is a definite color temp issue but that's how every amoled screen has been so far. I would take a little bit of blue tint over the black color performance
The thing that causes the ghosting, as I said in my original post, it fast movement. The screens pixels can't change fast enough so things leave a trail.
As I said the best way so see this is to loadup a long page with a white background and black text and then scroll down at a moderate pace, fast but not so fast you eyes your eyes canty follow the line of text. If toy do it right and you've got a decent set of eyes you'll see that the text leaves a trail.

Yep, there's a lot disappointments with the screen on this phone. However as the poll is so far proving, majority of people don't care for quality as much as us. Only a few others care/notice about the things we're complaining about.

Thanks .. Thats the funniest **** i have read all day...
Theres nothing wrong with my sgs2 and ive owned Hero's Desire's Nexus One's and even an LG2X.. This phone is superb.. This dude does sound a bit anal..
Hey. I can definately notice ghosting on this screen if i purposely try to but as others have said, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. When watching films or playing games it's non-existant.
As for the whites, you yourself stated you can't really notice until you hold the device against your professionally calibrated screen. How are the blacks in comparison? Out of interest, how much was that screen/calibration.
I think the main problem with alot of peoples gripes is focusing on only the weaker aspects of the phone rather than the device as a whole. People want perfection which unfortunately doesn't exist in the world of electrical consumer tech.
now i see this horrible grey everywhere i cannot even look at my phone any more!
I hope that this issue would be enough to change my device!
Hey drm111, as you know I have those problems too.
Did you have them on all your 4phones?
1) As you know I have this topic in wich one screen had this blue ish coat on the screen, noticable from the angles you talk abouth. But the other one does not have it.
So maybe not everyone has that blue coating? Did you investigated that further?
2) As you also know there is this yellowish/darker 1/3 of the left screen, probably some don't notice it. You have to be in a dark room or in a light one really looking for it. You read abouth this huh?
But I you didn't post it here. Aren't you having this problem? And did you have it on al of your 4 phones?
3) Ghosting, yes i notice it to. No sharp text when scrolling,is that the ghosting too?
I have this first generation ipod touch, text stays sharp when scrolling. Should be the case here too.
4) Than you have the grey tints, wich turn pink. You can see it in the topic of nongrata23. But some phone don't have it it seems. Software or hardware?
We need to figure out what is 'normal' and what isn't. As I don't want to send my phone back if it is normal at this point for all the gs2 that are on the market.
Let me start by saying i used to work for a PC magazine and was among those who blew the whistle on the nVidia texture replacement fiasco surrounding the Geforce 5800. I can see a single texture out of place in a high FPS game, so my eye is VERY keen.
The colour of the SGS2 is slightly blue yes, but mine is no worse than the average LCD, including the Retina display.
Response time is seemingly slower than the previous AMOLED screens ive seen, but again is more than a match for the LCDs out there.
I would say samsung have made a trade off between the sub pixel density and other factors. It works for me just fine.
The 16bit thing is interesting. It looks to me like the screen isnt 16bit, but it is using 16bit at times. Thats a driver issue.
Anyone else notice lighter blobs on their screen when a black app is loaded?
Try the night clock and tell me if you see any.
I use my phone as a clock at night and I just got this today and wow is it noticeable.

I also had that issue on my first unit, I had it replaced.
A quite bellow summarizes all the screen issues on the S2.
BarryH_GEG said:
There's really two separate issues that sometimes overlap:
1) The left side banding which appears along with a yellow tint either under certain conditions or, to some, in everyday use. This would seem to be a design issue as, to date, it shows up on every single phone produced.
2) Screen QC issues which include: 1) suction cup circles from production, 2) fingerprints on the inside of the display, 3) dead pixels, 4) vertical or horizontal lines, 5) ghosting, 6) white or black blotches, and 7) wide swings in color temperature.
There's no doubt the QC issues are probably vexing to Samsung. Based on the sheer quantity of displays they need to produce to satisfy demand they're either intentionally allowing displays to go out that shouldn't or are finding out from customers that bad displays got passed QC. Considering the large number of phones sold it's hard to guess the bad:good ratio but it would appear its larger than appropriate. And it doesn't appear to be getting better as newer builds seem to have the same issues as early builds. So banding may be forever but swapping phones may definitely help with the other issues.
I do think that adding the QC issues on top of the banding issue does compound it on some phones. That could certainly explain why some of us are happy and others aren't. There's still a lot of subjectivity at play so it will always be hard to say if what's acceptable to some is unacceptable to others. But with all the phones sold, you'd still think if more than a few percent had serious screen issues there would be a bigger audience for this thread and the issue(s) would have become more prominent on its own. I'd like to think things will get better but production demands may continue to allow QC issues to occur at higher than normal rates. Something that's frustrating for everyone - including Samsung.
Someone said something about the technology being flawed. Here's two links to stories where Apple was/is trying to get SAMOLED for their products. To me, it just helps reinforce that the benefits (color, contrast, viewing angles) still outweigh the downsides (screen life, burn in, inconsistency). And I'm sure Apple's engineers fully reviewed both the upside and downside before considering SAMOLED so it's still kind of a vote of confidence in the technology.

I've had it replaced 3 times now, I'm on my 4th unit. I can exchange one more time before I have to send it out for repairs.
I'll wait for them to get a new shipment in with different serial numbers (all the ones i've had start with the same 4 digits) and hope i get clean ones.
I called Samsung and the rep i spoke to told me that they have not heard of this issue.
Well they have 3 units in their back room with this issue so they will see it.
I think I will have to take a long-exposure photo to show them what the issue is.
Fingers crossed the next shipment is clear.

I've seen this isseu quite often when I had my phone exchanged mainly for a different screen defect, just be warned though since you had so many exchanges some people here might not actually believe that you went through 4 phones because 6Million phones sold and all that jazz.
Good idea that you decided to wait for another shipping, maybe you can even get a refund and just buy from another store that has good stocks?
I don't care what other believe or not. If they want to see my receipt plus the 2 exchange receipts I have here in this bag beside me I'll send them a picture.
Regardless, I must be one of the few people who have this screen problem AND use the phone as a night clock.
I am posting this for information to anyone who also has experienced or may wonder if their phone also has this issue.
If you dont have it, GREAT! I wish I had your phone.
(ps, this isnt a rant, just want this to be over)
I have zero issues with my screen; no ghosting, yellow/pink tint, light bolbs etc.
but no one believes me

Someone else in Canada (Toronto) went through five phones because of tinting issues with the display. He too exchanged them back-to-back from the same store. If you've been going to the same store, and there was a run of bad displays, all the phones built in sequence could be effected. Can't you go to a different store and exchange it there?
Have the same problem, its like blobs/smudges that are lighter black/greyish. Not an even black color.
Its best noticeable in a dark room without any other light, not even the light of the touch buttons or top bar active (so your eyes are adjusted to seeing in the dark). Using this image I can see it clearly. Auto adjust screen power doesn't influence it.
I think we all may have blobs to varying degrees. The other day I looked at my screen in bright sunlight with polarized sunglasses on. It made the screen look black but you could clearly see random beige blotches all over it. In normal use I think my screen is as close to perfect as there is and when looking at a black background in the dark I don't see blobs or blotches. The "O" in AMOLED stands for organic which means alive. Maybe what we're seeing is a by product of the technology.

You got it too!
Well, i'm glad I'm not alone sorry that you have it too.
Hopefully I will get a call from the store when the new shipment comes in and the issue will go away.
I tried going to another store and was told DOA's could not be exchanged at other stores that they had to go back to the store it was purchased at.
It is likely that all phones at Bell at all the stores at the same time may well come from the same batch.
I can wait over the weekend. I bought it on the 1st so still have most of my 30 day period to do the exchange. after that its repairs only. trying to avoid that.
I tried to get back the first one I had as it didn't have it as bad as all the subsequent ones I've had. Once a phone is marked DOA it can not be resold until it has been reconditioned and put back through the system. Understandable.

Well good you don't see any blobs or perhaps you are suffering from a certain degree of Nyctalopia. Sometimes a disorder is not bad, see no evil ... Nonetheless the O in AMOLED doesn't stand for alive, just for a chemical compound containing molecules with carbon.
I must add that two Galaxy S (i9000) models I have looked at don't have this issue, at all. The screens are fully and equally the same black tint/shade. Taking a picture to capture the problem has proven to be somewhat difficult, but this old camera probably isn't really anything to write home about these days.

OCD is also a recognized disorder in which the pursuit of perfection overtakes one's life. If I had problems with my phone I'd have no problem sharing them. I've posted tons of pics of my phone in the dark, in the light, on grey, showing apps, and at every brightness level between 0% and 100%. I'm not going to apologize because I have a decent screen. Though I do sympathize with those that aren't satisfied for whatever the reason.

I'm sure I'm not special. If you look at the low level of participation in the display threads either people have low standards or the majority of phones are like mine. Even within the display threads, 50% of the posts are by the same dozen or so people. In the other Canadian display thread a bunch of people from Toronto posted they had no problems. So keep spinning the wheel, you're bound to get lucky.

Obsessive–compulsive disorder is not how you describe it, perfectionism is. Some more of this perfectionism for a company like Samsung would not be bad at all.
It was not meant to be taken seriously anyway (hence the smiley). Albeit a joke, people whom suffer from night blindness will of course not see this particular issue though.
While I believe I did not post in the other display problem threads. I do have yellow tint and pink/blueish shade from all angles except from front. Which of course doesn't make it sound like a decent and proper SAMOLED+ display at all. Since I have a Galaxy S that doesn't exhibit these problems, it of course makes me a little disappointed.

I can not exchange my phone, probably because it was included for "free" with a Vodafone plan, even though I just have it a couple of days. The shop implied I could sent it in for repair but I am reluctant to do that for various reasons.

Not all phones are affected with the same assortment of issues but I find it hard to believe that your phone does not have any ghosting, its an limitation on the SAMOLED+, Im not saying your lying but I dont believe that claim either. For the yellow banding on the left side user to user and phone to phone subjective.

One of my thoughts also point to that a lot of S2 owners are first time users of SAMOLED screens, hence they dont know what to expect or have an entire low level of expectations. The S2 is my 3rd phone with a SAMOLED based technology and pretty much the expectation should be higher than the first generation SAMOLED right?
But all people say that these defects are expected are we are the minority as millions and millions of phones getting sold but theres no "internet media coverage" about it and they start bringing in other phones as a comparison when the only comparison needed is the previous generation SAMOLED.
I was initially very disappointed on this until I had my phone exchanged (Had to sort out over a dozen phones) and also XXKGx firmware alleviated the yellow banding, right now Im happy with what I got but I can be happier if the quality on the SAMOLED+ surpassed the first generation, The regular SAMOLED is superior in every way even if it was pentile. I just gotta hope for the best when the SGS3 and SAMOLED HD comes out.

This could also be a possible reason why Samsung has never said anything about the display issues on the S2, a lot of shops are refusing exchanges and sending customers to the service center and have repairs instead, probably Samsung has informed its retail channel that they will be replacing deadpixels only anything should be dealt with by the retailer.. well just a conspiracy theory =)
My first Galaxy Note had dead pixels, burn-in effects (don't know what you call them but there are pictures in the link below). The second one I got as a replacement had much more burn-in effects than the first one. The third Galaxy Note had burn-in effects but not as much as the first two, but the gyroscope isn't working on third one, yes I've calibrated it like a thousand times. All of these phones had the burn-in effects out of the box, so it wasn't I who was overheating the phones screen or something like that...
There were also other minor problems (with all three phones) like bad audio quality, bad Bluetooth connectivity, minor lagging and small blocks appearing when watching videos (yes, even of high quality videos) which doesn't appear on any other phone I've had.
I've never had any of these problems with another phone. I've mainly used Sony Ericsson and Apple phones. Off topic, or maybe not.. I also bought an Samsung Galaxy S2 for my girlfriend and it too had burn-in effects and a burnt in status bar (nothing she really cared about, I take it as does most of the people who have it), so it's not just the Galaxy Note suffering from this issue.
Now I'm here, with my third fricking defective Galaxy Note, really pissed off at these issues. If one pays ca. 500+ euros for a quality phone made by the "best" phone company in the world one doesn't expect to have these issues.
I will try to solve this by contacting Samsung. But I would ask of other owners of the Galaxy Note to do the following test on their phones and post a result.
Download the app:
1. Dead Pixel Detect and Fix
2. Start with choosing the colors white and grey
3. Within the app, go to settings, set brightness to lowest.
4. Be in a dark room and look for these burn in effects I'm talking about (dark vertical and horizontal lines + smudges).
Take a picture of the screen with another camera, taking a picture with the phone itself won't show these issues as it's not software issue but a hardware issue.
These were my results with the first two phones I bought:
http://imageshack.us/g/685/bild4ht.jpg/ (There is only one color displayed and there are lots of dark lines and smudges, ignore the grain)
Thank you.
Looking at your pictures they do look very bad, I cant even tell if that is supposed to be a white or grey rendering on the screen but thats an obvious defect.
Did you get your note from a retail store?
I've also had several replacements with my S2 and I ended up getting a refund.
IMHO, part of the cause of this really low quality control is not by samsung but from other users who accept obvious defects to be normal or tolerable, sure its gonna be a PIA to have it exchanged upto more then a dozen times but since a great majority of them are just accepting it so samsung is giving us sup par quality control.
Can't remember if the colors were white or grey on the first picture, but they were definitely the same on both phones!
I bought the first two phones from amazon.de, I got my money back from amazon.de. And I got my third galaxy note yesterday from handyshop.de...

They know what quality is, they just accept the defects as normal. For me I find it hard to accept some of the screen defects when I never faced this issue with first 2 SAMOLED devices. I guess its the flawless screens I had with my first 2 devices placed me in such high expectations especially on the SAMOLED Plus.
I'll try to see if I can also have mine replaced, the only issue I have is the faint horizontal lines, can be seen even when browsing. No effort needed to see it.

Sorry to read of your difficulties, but you do realize their are plenty of Sony and Apple owners with similar problems, right? You've just been lucky until now.
I have a SGS2 and My screen is perfect! Tried the app that is mentioned and all colors are perfect! Maybe there is a bad batch of Super AMOLED HD panels floating around. Don't know but I have never seen SAMOLED screen in such a bad shape! And I've seen a lot! Have somebody heard of Nexus Prime having this issues too?
Sorry, but may you take one picture and draw a circle around the defects? I'm honest: I don't see the banding/burn-in effects on your pictures, nor any dead pixels.
All I see is a poorly made photo, which isn't really sharp, sometimes shaken, and has a lot of grain, probably taken with a low cost camera at a too low brightness the camera isn't able to work with.
If I run the program on my HTC Desire (AMOLED) and on the Samsung Galaxy Note (Super AMOLED) I can't spot an failure. I see a minor burn-in in the notification area, which has nothing to do with quality control but rather it's a display technology limitation.
Else I can't spot any defects, no burn-ins, banding, ...
Just as I don't see this on your pictures, except a lot of grain caused by your camera.
One thing is obvious, that at the lowest brightness setting in a dark room, displaying a dark color, taken with a high exposure time, one can spot a difference in color reproduction between both models. But this is no failure at all, because the difference is minor and the frame conditions stupid. And you probably wouldn't be able to tell a difference without a direct comparison at such artificial frame conditions. And the question is, do other manufacturers allow such a low brightness? Do others have such an evenly lit display?
I really don't see any failure with your models.
So please, make a good photo, with a good DSLR, which is a necessity at such low lights, mounted on a tripod, and then draw a circle around the dead pixels, the banding and the burn-in.

Never heard of any screen problems with Apple and SE, (not saying it doesn't exist) but yes I might have been lucky until now. But what are the odds, 3 gnotes in a row (+ my gf's S2), more or less. It's like all my good luck has secretly been accumulating a lot of bad luck lol. Yeah but I can live with this third one, it's not as bad as the first two. But the problem is the gyroscope. It works randomly.
This is a major feature of recent Samsung Amoled actually. People have been complaining of screen problem for Galaxy SII, Nexus and Note.
They might not want to make the same mistake with their new 2560x1600 ICS tablet.
I've been interested in other phones that uses Sharp's ASV panel.

Strange that you compare OLED displays with LCD. No LCD on earth has a black as OLED, so if you compare OLED next to LCD at such sub-opimatl conditions you'll notice, that LCD won't even go as dark.
And never had any sort of backlight bleed? Just do a google search 'iPhone 4 backlight bleed' which are issues which are obvious.
I still can't see the issues on your pictures. I see artifacts and errors caused by the poor digital camera you used, just as buk_grudziadz nicely compared, thank you buk_grudziadz. But I don't see display failures and you don't seem to be able to show me them, else you would have done it already, or?

Well your whole comment seemed more like an insult than any help. How can't you see the issues on the screen? There is only one color on the whole screen, do you think it looks even? You and your friend are the first two people to complain about the photo quality, I'm not the best photographer and I don't know much about how to take good photos, but the problem is very visible. There are black lines, horizontal and vertical and dark smudges. I wish I knew how to take better pictures, even if I did know I don't have the phones since I returned them.
I have the third one left, but it's not that bad as the first two. If you want I can take a photo of it with a galaxy S2.
maybe your phones have the issues, I don't know and I can't tell it.
It's impossible to tell if the photos were taken with a smartphone camera, which adds that much noise that any slight color failures get overshadowed.
Just as with the pictures buk_grudziadz has taken. The display in the photo taken with the DSLR looks perfect, which it is. The same display taken with the Desire Z looks wrong. It has artifacts, color distortion (green and red) seems to have banding, and is grainy (noise), but it isn't. The photo is totally misleading, just as yours are.
So by looking at your pictures your display looks wrong, but not because of the display, but because of the poor camera quality. You can't do better photos with a smartphone camera, even with a point and shot camera it's difficult, you need a DSLR with a large CCD/CMOS sensor and good optics to take reasonable pictures at such a low light. If you don't have one, ask a friend. But the photos you posted are useless, sorry.
Just take a look at the two photos buk_grudziadz posted and tell me, does the display in the photo taken with the Desire Z look faulty or good?
I think your problem is that you are a screen nazi. No screen is perfect. I myself found a dead pixel with your app that i never noticed.
BTW to my knowledge AMOLED displays don't have backlight and the pixels themselves emit light right? So if I'm right, how is it possible to even burn the image of the statusbar when Samsung uses black theme? black means pixels off. How can an image be burned in the display that way?
@UpSpin
They did have those issues and I don't care if you think they "maybe" had those issues. Who the hell do you think you are coming here and being rude, questioning the validity of the issues I've had. I've been through hell with these phones complaining, sending them back, waiting for new ones and loosing money. You are not helping by complaining about the photos.
Do you really think someone would waste their free time on lying about some frickin issues on cellphones? The first person to answer this thread clearly could see them, and I wouldn't post those photos if they didn't look like EXACTLY what I could see with my own eyes. I posted those photos here a long time ago in another thread and nobody complained about the quality. They all saw the issues, many of them had the issues too.
I'm on my third galaxy note and it does have these issues, but luckily not as visible as the first two. When using the same camera I used before and the same settings on the new galaxy note, the problems are barely visible. It doesn't give the new phone some banding or artifacts.
Now these issues was mostly visible when using the lowest screen brightness with grey or white colors (picture yourself reading a book or browsing the internet). It was really annoying and a quality phone from the best phone company shouldn't have those issues.

Thank you for your comment, it really helped me. Seriously though, my problem is that I care about quality, clearly some people don't judging by your comment. If I pay 500+ euros for a phone with an amazing 5.3" AMOLED HD screen from the best phone company in the world, I don't expect to have problems out of the box. And if you did read my first post you would see that the third galaxy note I have has those issues but not as much as the first two and I am FINE with it. I was just pointing out that all of the gnotes I received had those issues, more or less and I wanted to know if other people had those too.
Hi guys.
Just recieved my brand new Nexus 4. Haven't rooted anything yet but I can notice some strange vertical "lines" of no colour. You can just say they are present and they give some weird discoloration, seen especially in the Settings menu,
Also noticed that my Antutu 3.0 closed itself (dunno why... it's 2GB of RAM...) only once and after one of several Antutu benchmarks there were some red lines... rectangles or some other stuff moving across the screen while in multitasking menu.
Now I'm a bit worried aboy the lines especially. Does it mean that I've just got a faulty device
Please check your Nexus 4's: just set the brightness to maximum and go to the Settings menu. If you see such not moving vertical lines (they are slight but still enough noticeable to see!) please report.
I live in Poland and I really would not want to RMA it since I would have to send it back to US...
EDIT: To add, the lines are especially seen on grey background, if it matters. But I can barely see them on my main screen too... I've also thought about the protective foil which is still present on both the front and back of my Nexus, but I don't think it may be causing it...
That's almost a description of the digitizer grid. Normally if it's at all visible it would require direct sunlight at specific angles. It would appear as metallic dots in vertical lines that reflect the sunlight. Perhaps the digitizer got bonded to the glass incorrectly? Give it a few days and see, it's well known that some bonding issues stabilize after a short while. If it's still very noticeable and bothers you, RMA the phone.

I'm almost sure it's not digitizer. I've seen it a few times on my dad's Xperia Neo V, and it just looks totally different. Also, I really can't see any dots. The thing that bothers me is the lines seem to be standing in their place all the time... I haven't seen this yet on any phone,
But, as you said, I'm giving it a few days. Also, I'll compare the screens when my 2nd Nexus arrives, so I'll find out if it's an issue or is it just normal (if it really CAN be normal...).
not in any particular order. factory reset it. get z-device test from the play store and run a test on the screen. dont run benchmarks on this phone. many people are having issues. and dont overclock. people are bricking their phones. i think they overheat.
Shouldn't be anything to worry about
Anyone got these lines or am I the only one to worry about them... :/ ?

Are you able to get a picture for us to see and compare?
I have lines, more like dots when angling the phone. They look like solar panel reflection, as a description. Only visible under strong sun light.
I also see rectangle impressions at certain angles;
-CC
Here it is.
They're a little less noticeable in reality (I wanted to show them clearly), but they are. It becomes really annoying especially on one-colour backgrounds (greys!) and when swiping screens from one side to another.
Maybe it will cure itself? I really wouldn't like to do an RMA since, as I already mentioned, I live in Poland, and it would be pain to send it back to US and wait another months for new one (likely with some issues too...).
Please report whether you've got these.
PS. I also see those rectangles, but only at a very specific angle, and these are really not noticeable at all. All that bothers me are these lines...
I also get these lines when I turn the brightness up high
So I guess I'm not alone with this (issue?). If anyone spots the lines please report. It's really important to me as I'll be living with this device for probably a year or so and I really don't want to know that my phone is defective...
It's so sad; except lines, the phone is absolutely perfect; no overheating, no earphone buzz (at least not noticeable during calls at all), no yellow screen spots, no flickering, decent battery life... And now this.
Crap. Maybe that's just another "Nexus 4 feature" ?
Got my 2nd Nexus today and it's also got that strange banding. Guess it's somehow just normal...
You're seriously whining about this?? Really?!

Not entirely. It becomes noticeable mainly in dark rooms, and I really like to browse the Web in my bed on my Nexus 4
I guess I am becoming used to it now. It starts to be less noticeable, especially outdoors where it can't be seen at all. So I'll just stick with that and probably keep the phone.

I am experiencing the exact same issue you are describing and am worried myself. I just opened up my phone today. Did you end up RMAing the device? With people claiming that this is one of the best displays out there, it seems like more people would notice this problem, especially since it is so noticeable from the settings menu.
Here's a picture of the screen banding.
Yeah same issue here guys ... Already some post about it. I'm used to see thèse now but very visible at high light and grey or setting background.

So do all nexus 4s have this issue or should we be RMAing our devices?
i have this too...
why does iPhone 5 get display from lg and dont have this issue but lg themselves do?
strangely apple can handle lg's screens better than themselves
kind of sucks...
this is one of those things that once you've seen it you cant unsee it
i also have a little bump on my aluminum bezel you cant see it but everytime i scroll on the left side on the screen i feel it...
So I guess the majority of Nexus 4 devices have that, but bany users can just not be aware of this issue.
That kinda sucks, but for this price... it's totally acceptable for me
Just like to say that I also have them, they are more visible at higher brightness.
