32Gb. Love it but.... - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have no light bleed. I have no screen lift. My speaker is awesome.
But....
I get a creaking when I press the center of the back of the tablet.
Should I return it?
I think I can live with it, but I don't know if it will get worse.
Has anyone had this issue get worse?
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda app-developers app

how often to you press on the back of the tablet? if it is often, i would probably complain.
if it isn't very much, like how I use my tablet, i wouldn't worry about it.
and if you plan on using a case, it probably wont matter at all once it is in there.

That's what I was thinking.
If it is in a case, who cares.
But I know it it's there....mocking me...
Asus has poor design and quality control. I know this. I should be able to live with creaking.
I am hypersensitive about any flaw after the nightmares I had with the TF201 and TF101.
As long as the problem won't get worse or have any other adverse effects, I think I should just live with it.
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda app-developers app

Not worth returning I'd say. Your replacement could have something worse, like screen lift, etc.
Throw it in a case and don't worry about it

Yeah not worth a return, just a rudy Nuisance!

I'd probably return it. But that's just me. It would drive me insane.

Best and Worst Device ever
Its amazing how this nexus device is the best ever when it comes to speed and performance . But its the worse or near when it comes to build quality so inconsistent..

FFS take it back & get an iPad or some other tab!
Just brought a new car, the door squeaks ever so slightly, think I might take it back.

i had a new mini van where the side door made a slight pop noise when it completely shut . I Thought it works fine no big deal. A few weeks later i parked on a heal facing down. I Opened the door to put bags in behind drivers seat. The jar caused what ever was causing the pop to come loose and the door nearly cut me in half.. Ok it moved toward me swiftly.. Took van to dealer . It was a defective latch. Maybe something was not assembled right .So to ask a question about my tablet makes a noise is logical to wonder about..
yes my mini van was 34 grand .. but the amount of money should not matter . you should get what you pay for. a working with no flaws device.. I see this over and over saying its only 200.00 what do you expect.. You expect if they cant make it right for 200.00 they should make it right and charge more.. NO OFFENCE ANYONE but we do not live in a 3rd world country and expect higher standards ..
Just my two cents... If your tablet bothers you with noises send it back by all means..

It's obvious that these hardware defects are mentioned right in the Nexus 7's product description as features. That means you should accept them, and continue using your device, because after all, it's clearly stated the device comes with such defects...
In all seriousness though, if your device has any imperfection, you have the choice to try again. However, since defects are random, you can end up with a better, worse, or no-change tablet. Some retailers are better at handling device returns than others however, but that's something that should be looked into prior to buying from that store.

These threads are amazing. Its no wonder the entire country is on Prozac. My god its nice being normal!

The back is made of plastic, it flexes ever so slightly. By pressing the back he is distorting the original shape & the creak is due to the back moving against the clips that hold the back in place, that is all. It is not a defect, it is natural for one object flexing against one that has no give to cause a small amount of noise.
If I buy a leather chair & park my fat arse on it & the leather makes a noise against the seat base is it defective? No!

Mine came perfect.
The left side of my screen near the center makes a strange noise when I press down on it, almost like adhesive lifting.
This thread title has defects
No I'm sorry. I don't believe I have any dead pixels. Mind you, I didn't search for long. What freaked me out however was that I never got the USB drivers from the SDK. I'm good now though, rooted and runnin'.
100% ok here sexy n sleek

The few bits of information about people having screens coming loose has me all paranoid. Mine makes a slight noise if the push on the lower right side of the device. But close examination makes it appear not to be the screen but the rear cover has a tiny bit of play (assume it is a slightly less than ideal retainer clip). I don't expect it to be an issue but if it does turn into one but the time I probably need to RMA it they should be further into the production cycle and hopefully past small issue like that.
There's already a thread like this

I'm not sure I would call one dead pixel "very minor". Could absolutely ruin things depending on where it is.

This is what I'm afraid of ... had the first transformer and that device was just rubbish .
What makes me thinking is that all the issues I had on transformer are showing up with nexus .
1. Loose screen (in transformer at first no problem after a week I could feel it being loose when grabbed . After 3 weeks screen collapsed and from the top of the edge to the screen surface there was like 2-3mm difference
2. Light bleeds ... had it all over the screen. That was an IPS screen.
3. Screen not stuck properly top right corner . When looked at the screen under about 160 degrees (pretty much looking at the screen when its flat) the actual screen was off by 3-4 mm from the main glass and could see the light coming through
4. Dead pixel. One but that's it .
And that was just one single device ... makes me wonder how Asus build this one when I read all the comments

Yep sorry to confirm, but I have the "loose screen issue" with my Nexus 7.
It's a device from Google I/O, so it could be that this this batch was put together in a hurry, and that caused the defect, but it's still a bummer, that it's not even a month old, and this happens. There's no way of returning it, because I'm in the EU...
Oh yeah, it's one of the few ones with a white back. The white is rubbing off where it sits on the table and where you hold it with your hand. The base black is slowly emerging.
I hope the ones people actually buy will be better manufactured...

Very small screen lift, not sure if worth returning

Hi all,
The nexus 7 is my first foray into the world of android, and I'll have to say I'm impressed. My iPad sits at home these days, while my nexus goes everywhere with me! Its a fantastic tab!
I seem to have an almost perfect device, I'm only getting a miniscule amount of screen lift on the left middle, its only, I wouldn't even say its its a mm, its only ever so slightly above the bezel.
So considering that, and everything else is perfect, and the store I bought from would ask me to send t back to Asus, is it worth all that trouble considering that its only a small lift, or will it get worse and one day it will pop up and the screen will shatter into a billion tiny expensive bits?
I know I can only decide, but looking for your comments
Thanks!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Well I've had slight lift like you and it hasn't got any worse or damaged the screen in any way.
Its just whether it bothers you enough to go through the hassle of sending it back.
The store should replace it themselves though since that's where you bought it from.

I'm in the same situation. It's not big, but at the same time it's a little bothersome. I tried some of the fixes but they only worked temporarily for me. I decided to call Google and they are going to send me another tablet, however, they are backordered again (I called 3days ago, still hasn't shipped). Now that I've had some time to think about it, I'm actually kind of scared that the new 1 will be worse or something, but we shall see. The rest of my tablet works fine, it's absolutely wonderful.

I've circled the offending area.
Although TECK's lift is minor, it would be easy to spot if the photo were taken from a lower perspective. Checking from the right side is useful because it's easy to see where the black display is raised enough to eclipse the thin, silver line of the left bezel. The perspective in his photo is too high to accentuate the flaw because you can peer over the lifted glass and see the bezel.
Here are some other examples.
I honestly think this is an issue with the Nexus 7 in general, and that some people notice it and some don't (and some just don't get it warm enough for the side to pop up). I have it but I am certain that I wouldn't have even noticed if I hadn't read about it on the internet, so I try to ignore it. Unless it's obvious or gets in the way in any way, I'd say make do, this is the sort of downside to expect from a tablet half the price of the competition.

Don't fret. The Nexus 7 with minor lift is still best in its class, and flawless ones do exist.
Worst case scenario, there is a very, very low risk of the glass cracking during normal use, but if you're under the Play store warranty I think you should be covered for that. Just to be on the safe side, however, I would encourage anyone with screen lift to document it with pictures and/or video. That way, in the unlikely event that it ever does cause a problem, you'll have evidence to support your claim.
The really low quality attachment I posted before, the middle one, was my own Nexus 7. I tried three times for a flush screen, and that was the best of the three. At this point I'm wishing I'd kept it, so take that for what it's worth. I returned the third and final one because there was distortion when pressed along the left side.
Here are a couple photos by users with better luck than myself. They do exist.
I took a photo of the screen lift just in case the thing cracks and the store blames me

Explain the reason samsung uses glossy plastic instead of matte like on the S2

Glossy plastic picks up a ton of fingerprint smudges and ends up looking like #%&! real quick
Seems like a better choice would be a matte version like on the S2 seen here:

Because Samsung is clueless when it comes to aesthetics. Not only does matte hide fingerprints but it just looks so much better as well.
Sent from my Nexus S using xda app-developers app
Glossy Plastic looks more classier than matte. But when you touch it doesn't feel so great.
I think they should start using aluminium like Apple and HTC.
who cares buy a case
anyone who has this phone WITHOUT a case is silly, protecting an extremely expensive (in most countries) piece of technology from harm is more important than what colour it is, what its made out of.
as far as anyone should be aware, the screen quality should be all that matters, since its all that should be poking through the case you have over your phone to protect it from damage.
they are helping CSI so they can easily get your fingerprints out of the phone
coz it looks great. simple buy a case

How can it look great when you put a case over it. The guy asked for example why is the sky blue and your telling that train has steel wheels. Totally out if theme.
Samsung has a lack of design and looks when you compare it with the others. Samsung and Lg build bricks from plastics not worth a [email protected]& . Got this one from work I think I'll buy htc for private use.

i'm not complaining on what they did,
it's hyperglazed polycarbonate plastic, same material as bulletproof glass
They put a pattern on the plastic so the fingerprints don't stand out. You can only see them when looking at an angle.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
Matt, gloss or metal wouldn't make a difference to me, as i always put my £500+ smartphone in a case for the simple reason of protection, last thing i want to happen to my phone is for it to get scratched up or break, I even go as far to stick it in a pouch aswell with the case on when it's in my pocket at work for that extra bit more protection, so when it comes to selling it on my phone as good as the day i bought it.

So why did you buy it if you don't like it ?
And btw s4 with its plastics cost more to make than iphone 5 with all its aluminium.
Why should I hide a beautiful phone in a case? Would you do the same with a lamborghini cause its so expensiv?
Question answered itself in case of the S4: Nothing beautiful to hide.

Go back to hide your "beautiful" aluminum phone with a case like all the other users here in XDA do (more than 130 pages):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2171713
And this is only one thread of many...
^Haha yeah. I'd love to know the percentage of the "beautiful" phone owners who'd not put a case on their phones. Good luck with that.
Either way - I'd love to know what OP asked too, seriously. I mean sure, it might be a moot point etc - but why? Is glossy plastic easy to manufacture than matte?
I like samsungs design and use a case only if im at work,if something goes nuts i repair it by myself.
I had every S series galaxy since the first one and the only issue which i had was a defect usb port because of water damage.
I bought a new port and repaired it by myself.

I've never used a case with any of my smartphones and never had a problem ... Won't use a case with the SGS4 either. It's big enough as it is.
But I have to agree, the backcover of the SGS2 is much better. I guess Samsung went with the glossy one, because too many people complained about the cheap look of SGS2's backcover. That happends when function follows form ... too bad.

RMA after a Year?

Hey fellas,
I have a question. Is it possible to get a RMA after One year?
I got my nexus 4 in December 2012 and rma'd it because of broken volume rockers in January.
Now that I wanted to buy a Nexus 5 and therefore sell my nexus 4 I recognized a few things on my nexus 4 while doing a thoroughly inspection.
The chrome of the display frame is slowly vanishing although I never dropped my phone or treated it in a rough way. Always in my jeans pocket.
Furthermore, the case is creaking when I press slightly on the back. And the volume rocker and power button are creaking as well.
And what i'm not sure of if its normal or not: the front camera shows my face only if I pivot the to the left and down. The camera seems to be tilted.
All these things would decrease the selling price significantly. Do you guys have any experience if a RMA is possible for those reasons and after such a long time? The creaking problems existed from the beginning btw.
Thanks
You used it and now you want a new one to sell? NICE.

If it's not the creaking case, it's the tilted camera. That's definitely not my fault and since I never used the front camera I never recognized it.

ya mine acquired this issue between yesterday and today. and it's half way across the lens. I was on a video call yesterday. it's almost like it got warm and something shifted and is stock over top of it now...................... I'm hella impressed to say the least
I haven't dropped my phone either. it's in an element case recon pro. yesterday was the first time using my front facing camera. was in a hangouts video call for about 20 minutes. now this. wtf..\\
mine is one of the made in china variants, not made in korea. first time I've had one from china, all other 8 of my samsungs galaxy s or note phones have been from korea...
Hmm...... It sucks. As it's now getting worse too.

Mine is right across the middle.

Had the same thing happen to me.
Didn't drop it or anything. Getting it replaced by warranty.
If you rooted you can always get third party insurance.

I bought mine from Expansys. I had to change roms just to get LTE on the LTE model. so I voided my warranty by default. They offered to swap the handset, but I think they don't realise the g900m they sell doesn't ahve lte enabled, even after the OTA update. so I get to live with it. It's slowly shifting. eventually it will be away from the image sensor
I just really hope it's nothing to do with the water resistance. I'm already considering this may last samsung phone after 9 different galaxy s/note phones... luckily I don't typically bring it in water with my so it's not that big of a deal, but if it does happen and it leaks there.. samsung will be dead to me.
Mine was literally in the middle yesterday. So maybe by tomorrow it will be clear again. It's definitely related to heat. Either that or it wasn't glued in the first place.

It started at the top like the other images I see. Yesterday I could see image on either side of the shifting piece, but it was literally dead centre.

I had the same problem when I had the note 3. In the end I took it apart then peeled off the rubber ring and placed it back around the front camera correctly. Was pretty easy. Not sure on S5 though. If you have warranty, use it.

ya, I've been debating about doing this tbh. I've changed glass before in other peoples' phones.. but I always had a new piece to replace the broken piece.. basically a spare.. I dont' have a spare if I mess up heh. ya I'll probably do this later. and maybe re-glue it lol...
I'm going to try this now heh.. will report back shortly. I took a look at a video online and it appears that the ring is accessible once the glass is removed...

so I just took that little o-ring out. wtf is it there for? lol, it was almost off the lens anyway. I only pried it open enough to get a needle in and take the ring out, I didn't take the whole thing off. I doubt it's as water resistant but who knows...
ADDITION: so it appears to narrow the field of view slightly. I don't take selfies, I may have a hangouts video call once a week (usually on my computer, but if I'm out I'd like to be able to do this..). I notice if my finger goes over the edge of the top of phone (but not over lens) it pics up my finger, where as it wouldn't have before.. big deal. I'd rather not have to take it apart again, so the ring is gone lol.
I hit it with the hair dryer once after pressing it down... going to do it again shortly, its' completely cooled. just hitting it again to be on the safe side. didn't cause any damage to phone so was rather easy just make sure to be patient. I had pry tools from old phones, but I wouldn't recommend taking the entire glass off with it...
Thanks for getting back to us and telling us how you got on.
