Mine came perfect.

The left side of my screen near the center makes a strange noise when I press down on it, almost like adhesive lifting.

This thread title has defects
No I'm sorry. I don't believe I have any dead pixels. Mind you, I didn't search for long. What freaked me out however was that I never got the USB drivers from the SDK. I'm good now though, rooted and runnin'.

100% ok here sexy n sleek

The few bits of information about people having screens coming loose has me all paranoid. Mine makes a slight noise if the push on the lower right side of the device. But close examination makes it appear not to be the screen but the rear cover has a tiny bit of play (assume it is a slightly less than ideal retainer clip). I don't expect it to be an issue but if it does turn into one but the time I probably need to RMA it they should be further into the production cycle and hopefully past small issue like that.

There's already a thread like this

I'm not sure I would call one dead pixel "very minor". Could absolutely ruin things depending on where it is.

C6 from Gamestop with no issues so far.

add it up... about 25%... lf course the numbers aren't that great lol.

Keep in mind, I am simultaneously knocking on a huge piece of wood as I type this, but my Nexus that I purchase at Gamestop is brilliant. No issues at all to speak of. Hope it stays that way and that all of you who got defective units get them replaced soon. Cheers.

This is what I'm afraid of ... had the first transformer and that device was just rubbish .
What makes me thinking is that all the issues I had on transformer are showing up with nexus .
1. Loose screen (in transformer at first no problem after a week I could feel it being loose when grabbed . After 3 weeks screen collapsed and from the top of the edge to the screen surface there was like 2-3mm difference
2. Light bleeds ... had it all over the screen. That was an IPS screen.
3. Screen not stuck properly top right corner . When looked at the screen under about 160 degrees (pretty much looking at the screen when its flat) the actual screen was off by 3-4 mm from the main glass and could see the light coming through
4. Dead pixel. One but that's it .
And that was just one single device ... makes me wonder how Asus build this one when I read all the comments

Yep sorry to confirm, but I have the "loose screen issue" with my Nexus 7.
It's a device from Google I/O, so it could be that this this batch was put together in a hurry, and that caused the defect, but it's still a bummer, that it's not even a month old, and this happens. There's no way of returning it, because I'm in the EU...
Oh yeah, it's one of the few ones with a white back. The white is rubbing off where it sits on the table and where you hold it with your hand. The base black is slowly emerging.
I hope the ones people actually buy will be better manufactured...

I broke my AMOLED screen while skiing. It is replaceable and a lot cheaper than buying a new phone. You can find new screens on ebay for $70-$80 usually. Make sure you find out whether you have an AMOLED or SLCD so you can get the right screen. Google can help you determine that.

I have an AMOLED screen but i dont wish it to replace. I'm looking for replacement between a Galaxy Nexus or a White Skyrocket for $200. My Nexus One still works. I still use it with the broken screen to call my boyfriend (I'm female), i just memorized how to get into the favorites contacts and call, hehe but just him. It's useless screen is now completely black and non existant.
I was charging it and it suddenly fall down into the floor, as usual. It was not a very hard hit per se, but must be the angle.

Heck, she should send me the broken N1. I'll fix it up good as new. Luckily, I'm still using my N1 without any major issues. I'm due for an upgrade sometime next year. HTC Nexus 4 I hope?
If youre interested in selling your broken N1 I would be interested in purchasing it! PM me if so.

Very small screen lift, not sure if worth returning

Hi all,
The nexus 7 is my first foray into the world of android, and I'll have to say I'm impressed. My iPad sits at home these days, while my nexus goes everywhere with me! Its a fantastic tab!
I seem to have an almost perfect device, I'm only getting a miniscule amount of screen lift on the left middle, its only, I wouldn't even say its its a mm, its only ever so slightly above the bezel.
So considering that, and everything else is perfect, and the store I bought from would ask me to send t back to Asus, is it worth all that trouble considering that its only a small lift, or will it get worse and one day it will pop up and the screen will shatter into a billion tiny expensive bits?
I know I can only decide, but looking for your comments
Thanks!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Well I've had slight lift like you and it hasn't got any worse or damaged the screen in any way.
Its just whether it bothers you enough to go through the hassle of sending it back.
The store should replace it themselves though since that's where you bought it from.

I'm in the same situation. It's not big, but at the same time it's a little bothersome. I tried some of the fixes but they only worked temporarily for me. I decided to call Google and they are going to send me another tablet, however, they are backordered again (I called 3days ago, still hasn't shipped). Now that I've had some time to think about it, I'm actually kind of scared that the new 1 will be worse or something, but we shall see. The rest of my tablet works fine, it's absolutely wonderful.

I've circled the offending area.
Although TECK's lift is minor, it would be easy to spot if the photo were taken from a lower perspective. Checking from the right side is useful because it's easy to see where the black display is raised enough to eclipse the thin, silver line of the left bezel. The perspective in his photo is too high to accentuate the flaw because you can peer over the lifted glass and see the bezel.
Here are some other examples.
I honestly think this is an issue with the Nexus 7 in general, and that some people notice it and some don't (and some just don't get it warm enough for the side to pop up). I have it but I am certain that I wouldn't have even noticed if I hadn't read about it on the internet, so I try to ignore it. Unless it's obvious or gets in the way in any way, I'd say make do, this is the sort of downside to expect from a tablet half the price of the competition.

Don't fret. The Nexus 7 with minor lift is still best in its class, and flawless ones do exist.
Worst case scenario, there is a very, very low risk of the glass cracking during normal use, but if you're under the Play store warranty I think you should be covered for that. Just to be on the safe side, however, I would encourage anyone with screen lift to document it with pictures and/or video. That way, in the unlikely event that it ever does cause a problem, you'll have evidence to support your claim.
The really low quality attachment I posted before, the middle one, was my own Nexus 7. I tried three times for a flush screen, and that was the best of the three. At this point I'm wishing I'd kept it, so take that for what it's worth. I returned the third and final one because there was distortion when pressed along the left side.
Here are a couple photos by users with better luck than myself. They do exist.
I took a photo of the screen lift just in case the thing cracks and the store blames me

What to look for to make sure my Nexus 7 is perfectly ok?

So I bought the Nexus 7 the other day. I've briefly read about some of the issues affecting the Nexus 7. I don't have the time to go through every single posts in this forum so I'm hoping someone can summarize the issues for me. How can I check to make sure that my N7 doesn't have the screen lift issue? If it's flush with the case then everything is ok right?
Are there any other issues to worry about?
Also, I can't seem to tell whether I have the C60 or the C80 batch. The 6 and the 8 look so similar. Is there any other way to confirm this?

I wouldn't get too paranoid with potential problems, just look for screen lift, dead pixels and screen responsiveness.

Screen lift is the most common flaw. It occurs predominately on the left side.
The easiest way to inspect the left side is to look from the right. Hold the device with the right side facing you and look across the glass so the left bezel becomes a silver horizon. If the black display is higher than the bezel at any point, it will interrupt that silver line.
Here is an example of a flush screen, looking across the device from the right side.

Darn, just got my Nexus 7 and mine suffers from screen lift. I assume Google will replace it if I contact them?
Google will replace it but your probably not going to have any more luck. I think most have this issue. In my experience, I popped off the back (it just pops off) and made 3 tiny "washers" out of the plastic from a medicine foil pack. Super easy to do and it is able to pull the screen down nicely. There is a great thread for this with step by steps. Use a plastic spoon or a guitar pick to help pop off a corner get started with taking the back cover off. Once you get a corner up, you can use your fingers to rip it off.
There is 1 screw that is problematic but the other left-middle screw also used a washer on mine (2 on the top and 1 on the lower). Where the screen lifts = screw.
Asus/Google fixes this by simply exluding the screw all-together. So essentially you could remove the screw(s) yourself for a 3-minute fix. I recommend the washer fix first because the screws were there for a reason.
They all have or will have screen lift at some point or another. Could we just give the OP other problems the N7 might have instead of making this thread into another one of the countless screen lift thread already in existences.
I'm still waiting for a screen to fall off the bezel.

Mine doesn't have this screen lift issue (so far), I don't see how this issue can appear over time if it's related to the screws.

I can't see anything wrong with it, the edge of the frame is visible under all angles on all sides. If might not be "perfectly flat", but if it isn't, then the deviations are too small for me to pick up with my naked eyes (which are pretty crappy, I admit).

anyone else see grid of silver dots in sunlight?

Hey everyone,
My nexus 4 screen shows a perfect grid of silver dots when I am in sunlight. It seems to happen at certain angle. Is anyone else experiencing this? Thanks
It's normal, it's just the touch screen digitiser - same with my One X
Thanks for the quick reply! Good to hear there isn't a problem.
Yeah that's just the digitizer. It has something to do with LG moving the screen closer to the glass so the digitizer is more visible than past phones
The only thing that sucks about that is if the screen breaks so does the digitizer

I just went to a Telus store to get a new micro SIM, and looked at the screens of the HTC One X+, Galaxy S3 and Note2, couldn't see this grid pattern on any of them. I don't see it on mine if I'm in a room with no sunlight, but soon as there is sunlight its very noticeable. Walking outside soon as I take my phone out its all I can see. If that is normal take a photo of your phone with the same thing. I have not found any hi-res images of the Nexus 4 with this sort of pronounced visible grid pattern.
I contacted Google Play support via chat and they said it's not normal and I should RMA. But I'm still not 100% confident Its a defect and my replacement won't just be the same.
that is normal, there is actually two patterns, the silver dots and one with rectangle boxs like lol, not sure how to describe it. your phone is fine.
Its normal. I had the HTC inspire 4g, and the lg optimus g and they had the same thing.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Then why does no other phone have this visible? I compared it side by side with a HTC One X+, Galaxy S3, Note2 and none of them had any visible grid of tiny rectangles.
None of the photos I've seen of the Nexus 4 screen have any of this visible. Its not just with sunlight, any light makes it visible, almost has a textured look.
If this is normal then I'm really disappointed in this phone, seems like a glaring difference between the it and the other popular phones, that's why i think its not normal, i never saw any reviews mention anything like this.
If i take a photo of my phone at either of these angles I could clearly see the grid, but these 2 random photos show nothing

As usual, customer support is useless.
Normal due to NO gap in between digitizer and glass paneling. LG did this intentionally and is why you can see it. Other manufacturers DONT do it due to being able to see digitizer. LG did it intentionally and it is normal.

Also the reaspning behind WHY digitizer is useless after glass paneling breaking versus SIIIs paneling and others still being functional. Because the glass paneling doesn't automatically break digitizer when breaking because of the gap.

If this is normal why did the Google tech support say its not normal and told me to warranty my phone? But I know the tech support is probably not great and they might just say that to anything. But I sent them the photo of my screen and that's what they said.
So I really don't know what to think, people in this thread say its normal, but Google support says its not...
I really don't want to go through the hassle of sending in my phone for warranty if I just get back a phone with the same quirk.
As I posted before, why don't some others post some angled photos of there screens in daylight.
Who knows why they say that. If you believe them then go to town and quit asking us why. Believe them and get a replacement with the same thing lol. People ask questions on here and then get an answer and don't believe anything they get as a response haha

[Discussion]Dead pixels, dust under screen..

where's the quality control, Asus? I picked mine up today... had a big old dead black pixel right in the middle of the screen... being as anal as I am about small things, I returned it.. got another... dust under the screen! I notice this one damn piece but I can't tell if it's dust or yet another bad dead pixel. kind of ridiculous but I'm not going to keep swapping these out. I'll live with it.. but still. whatever happened to quality control!? all new devices have such a higher rate of getting dead pixels or screen defects, it's ridiculous.

Sorry to hear that. But if I were you I'd exchange the 2nd one as well or just get a refund in full.

I'm not gonna exchange because the next one could be worse. I'm not dealing with this again lol

First one had a stuck green pixel that was immediately noticeable on the "Google" boot screen. The replacement has a thin line of light bleeding along the top. It's not totally awful, but I'm wondering if other units share it. I researched it a bit and the bleeding on mine isn't as bad as it could be.
Whining about 2 bad units. 10 of us got our tablets and perfect screen, 9 with 0 light bleeding. Mine has a small line on the left side which is barely noticeable.
If you get bad manufacturer units, use the warranty. Is there for a reason.

Hmm..for once I got a perfect device. I got used to backlight bleed. You should see my zenbook prime...that's a mess.

Had to exchange one at Best Buy today. (The floor manager walked back to the back where they were still in the process of emptying the truck to get me a new one!) There was a line about 50 pixels long about a half inch above the navigation bar that looked okay until i started swiping through the play store. The pixels seemed to be mirroring certain colors, it was strange. Anyways the exchange was effortless and my new unit is flawless!
TL;DR... Very glad I decided to go with Best Buy for my purchase.
I haven't noticed anything odd so far with mine. No pixel issues or backlight bleeding that I can tell. Only thing going on is the JSS15J update issue. Mine came from a Best Buy that seems to have had it in the stockroom for at least a day. The closest one was still unloading their truck and didn't know if/when they would be there.
I noticed three spots on my screen that looked like dust or deal pixels under the screen. Hard to tell which, because of you can notice the black spec then it's a lot more then a single pixel that's dead due to the high dpi. I exchanged mine and so far I haven't noticed it again

Mine is perfect
No issues with mine. I even did a pixel test. But yes; dead pixels and dust always suck. I've swapped a droid x, one Note 2, two HTC rezounds, a iPad 2 and 3 all for dead pixels or lint. Almost forgot about the Nook HD plus.
The take away is that no company is immune to this issue. The worst out of the bunch was the HTC rezound. The dead pixels would cluster in groups. Even the 3rd phone had a dead pixel but I lived with it because I got it at a good cost.
I didn't have any dead pixels, but I did have a lot of apparently random dead spots across the screen, so that I was unable to trace a solid line without it spacing out.
I would have icons I was dragging just drop, or random presses happen. For the first bit, as I was tinkering at work, I was unsure if it was overly responsive, but testing when î got home diagnosed it.
It's wiped and ready to exchange as soon as the Best Buy opens today, and them in get to go into work on the weekend so fingers crossed.

Here we go again. I really hope Asus is doing a better job this time.

Rats. After I had to RMA my original N7 3 times due to screen lift and a broken backlight I thought I was lucky when I received my new N7 and didn't notice any imperfections. Then I saw some dust or dead pixels or something near the bottom http://i.imgur.com/gDJxmgz.jpg. Oh well, at least Amazon is sending me a new one and I have until the end of August to send back my current one for free.
My bezel had a ton if scratches on it out of the box. There is no quality control at Asus and Google needs to ditch them. It makes google look bad

Did you see the fix for this?
Mine delivered from Amazon is flawless. I just did a screen test and looks good.

yeah I'm hardly noticing the dust so idc, I'm not going to return it to possibly get one with more dead pixels or other issues. no electronics are perfect in today's age.. nobody has good quality control because it's just mass produced stuff.
