Nexus 4 son of iPhone 4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I was looking at the LG nexus 4 design and I liked it until I saw the back it looks too much like the iPhone 4/4s, I would be ashamed to pull this out of my pocket infront of a crowd. When people see it they are not going to say "hey thats the new nexus" their going to say "look LG copied the iPhone". So many android fans criticised iPhone for easily breaking but when a nexus phone COPIES it then it becomes okay, talking about being biased.
I mean I'm no head of design for apple but it's just an absolute copy if their where lots of phones with glass backs then it would be just another phone with a glass back, but the only phone that has that and has had that for 2 years is the iPhone I just can't understand. I was watching a video made by verge in google hq about the nexus 10, 7 and they said they choose the design to their liking then they obviously are a fan of the iPhone. I like the nexus 4 design but its been taken by another company I want apple to sue LG this is absolutely wrong companies like samsung and LG don't end up in court for no reason.
Another thing I noticed was the camera was underneath the glass panel but the camera flash light had a black ring around it which looked awful. if your going to copy someone atleast do it properly. It just goes to show that this is LG where talking about. I've heard a saying a person who copies another cannot do it better then the original because they intend to also inherit the same mistakes as the original. I've come to conclusion that all the mistakes to iphones made by shattering easily LG just did. I don't care if LG copies but this is a nexus android flagship, it is this device which will be compared to the iPhone /4s/5. How do you feel about the design I think they should have gone for the same back casing as nexus 10.

I'm all for public appearances, but don't you think that not getting a phone because of what "people will think" when you pull it out of your pocket is a bit... well, selling what the device is a little short?
If you don't like the design, that's one thing, but not buying a phone because of what you think other people will think is convoluted to even type. xD I'd just a soon take the opportunity to tell them, "Heck no this isn't an iThing! It's the Nexus 4 and waaaaay better. Check out what Android can do." If even by your own admission it's a nice design, why let the fact that an iThing has it degrade it? If anything, it's a time to claim look who did it best!

To say the Nexus 4 looks like a iPhone just because of a glass back is insane. It looks NOTHING like the iPhone. It has a pattern on the glass and it is rounded more than that Brick.

So iPhone users should be ashamed to use the pull down notification in the crowd according to your logic?
Sent from my Nexus 7

When I said I didn't like the nexus 4 back design it wasn't because I care what people think that was just an example of what it reminds people of. I know that the nexus 4 does'nt look anything like an iPhone but the back does. Yes I know it has some sort of crystals but it still looks like an iPhone because only the iphone has a glass back, if more then the iPhone had a glass back then it would be okay but only the iPhone has a glass back.
Their was no need for the crystal effect that they used, only because without that it really would look like the back panel of an iPhone. Those crystals or what ever they are called are usually used on girly products handbags, jewellery etc I'm not saying men can't have diamonds and crystals on their clothes and products but they do say diamonds are a girl's best friend and they do attract the female audience more. If a girl sees the phone they will say how pretty because believe me it will attract them its true.
Another thing why hasn't anyone criticised it for being easily shattered like the iPhone or slippery. One more thing the nexus 4 does share a lot in common with the iPhone 4 double sided glass, metal or aluminium around it. I know the nexus is more rounded and it is absolutely identical to the galaxy nexus but the back panel is just wrong. One of the comments said that if anyone thinks the nexus 4 looks like the iPhone 4/4s because of the glass back panel are crazy then you are seriously insane for think it doesn't, why could they have not used polycarbonate or aluminium. Believe me because of this design the nexus 4 will probably be ban in some countries by the ITC, Apple already attempted to ban the nexus but dut to it having a battery hump and camera humo they failed but not this time especially with the use of a micro-sim and sealed battery.

Because we don't have any real REVIEWS and there is no indication that it's any more slippery than other devices? Have you held this device yet?
I don't really know why I am responding... you basically just said you think it's a girly device because of a pattern on the back. Feeling a bit insecure about sequins?

Meaning it wouldn't shatter just as easy? naaaaaaah glass will break period.
Gorilla Glass is just a brand name hell it might even be worse than some other third party and the glass is just efficient for minor scratches by like your nail not drops

I'm not a spokesperson for gg but if you see my other post about how my phone has been used and abused i think you'll understand why I'm pretty confident in it.... granted it doesn't stand much chance against sand and stuff but I'm pretty confident about it not shattering too easily...

You want Apple to sue LG because it also have a phone with glass back? That is pretty ridiculous. Since when am I a consumer who is not allowed to buy any product made of glass unless it has an Apple logo?
Just don't buy the phone if you're ashamed of others seeing you with it. Personally, I do not buy phones to make status or fashion statements, I'm going to be doing more fun stuff on the actual device, it'll probably be in a case anyway.

2 separate screen protectors needed for the front and the back... Le sigh...

This entire thread is pretty amusing, especially the OP.
I'm not going to argue for or against it looking like an iPhone or whatever.
However, I was under the impression that Apple picked glass for functional reasons and not purely for aesthetics. I believe it allows wireless signals through more easily than most metals and is tougher than most plastics.
So LG may have chosen it for the same reasons?

tempted to get an iphone..

Build quality is superb, video is amazing, I feel like my evo will disintegrate within 6months.. I never had ATT but i'm sure I will hate them but I'm not much of a talker or texter.. I just like to browse the net on my phone, upload some videos on facebook/youtube,listen to my music and play a few games..
i feel my evo is consuming my life with all these new roms and such, I have very little self control, instead of focusing on school work im obsessing over the next new hack for my 002 novatec, or when I can upgrade to an 003,.. I think I need to dumb it down and get an iphone lol
Disintegrate?
Does the Evo really feel that cheap in your hands?
And, for goodness sake, glass on the BACK of the phone? Yikes.
Go get the iPhone then, no one is going to stop you but yourself. To me it sounds more like your into the most popular phone atm then anything else.

I really don't get a cheap feel with the Evo ... design / material / quality wise.
Just because the iPhone has glass (OMGhana) all these people seem to think that it's all high end. Maybe I don't want glass. Maybe I have too much glass in my life. Christ. I digress. It's all a matter of what best suits the user.

well its the screen separation (screen is sinking! barely push against it and it sinks in itself, affects accurate touch operations) and the flimsy backcover that makes a squeeky noise now when I hold it, the kickstand as well is making a noise, wheres the WD-40! sorry I didn't clarify this.
Yeah I can agree on that, not a big fan of the camera sticking out. Nothing a case can't fix though.

The monthly bill will be a lot more then what you pay now (unless you can get a good discount). Don't forget that AT&T got rid of their Unlimited plan so....I hope you can keep it under 2 gigabytes or you will have to pay a fee.
Either way...your best bet is to do your own evaluation with them and their network. To each his own, but I wouldn't go back!
Truth be told there are things about the Evo that I don't necessarily "love." The shape of the back case, which I know is what it is for a reason.
In terms of the iPhone ... I'll admit to liking the newer design in terms of it being more "Squared" and flatter. Didn't like the rounder previous iPhone's, which is something I sort of see with the Evo but since it's a bit "thicker" it works. But it's still a sharp looking device, for whatever that's worth. Not to suggest the Evo isn't.
Held the iPhone 4, and yes, it does have that "feel and look" but it didn't necessarily sit in my hands, landscape mode (as that's how I'm usually holding the phone), as comfortably as my Evo did. I like the little bit of heft and size you get with the EVO, in the end it just felt more comfortable.
The new iPhone does look cooler than last generations ... but it's still a got damn iPhone.

My neighbor let me play with her iPhone for a little bit and imo, I hated the feel of it in my hand. I was more of a fan of the rounded back. The phone was fast but nothing that made me feel amazed. Overall I didn't feel like it was a worthy upgrade over the 3gs, but again I'm not a big Apple fan. For those that like/love the iPhone/Apple I'm sure you like it though.

The things that keep me from getting an iphone again are:
No flash, I love watching flash on fail blog or assorted sites
No .wmv player. One off my favorite sites puts up their videos in that format
No widgets. Going in and out if programs for basic info gets old.
Small screen. After the evo I don't think I can go under 4 inches.
Email attachments are handled fairly ****ty on the iphone especially if the device doesn't recognize them. I can download anything through the gmail.com site.
Notifications suck on the iphone. Not a total deal breaker for me but still on the list.
No swype.
I don't get it with people. It's like they have to come in and justify why they buy or not buy a phone. Do you do the same with your car, home, clothes?
Do you tell your friends I am buying a Honda now that my Ford's build quality isn't what I like. No offense to Ford owners
The Iphone's build quality is not all that - i think you have read some of the reviews. It's slick I will give them that. But once you put a case on it how does it feel now?
There are already signs of them getting scratched up. Once you put a thicker case on it guess what? It's not a sleek and small as you once thought it was. No different from the EVO. I put on my case and I see all screen.
You put on the bumpers to the Iphone 4 and you see all screen.
I don't care what phone anyone gets. I don't get into the fanboy fight either way. I like what I like and I buy it. Android happens to be my OS of choice and the EVO my phone. Windows Phone 7 will be my next phone as well. If the Iphone came in a 4" or larger screen I would have considered it. BUT...this forum and these developers and people are the real reason so many of us are into these phones the way we are.
I am sure the HD3 will be pretty slick. I can almost guarantee you that if the design concepts comes close to the real deal that it will be amazing.
Just so you guys know Ive read quite a few posts complaining about light leaking on the iphone 4 aswell. If thats what causes your gripes on building quality you may be disappointed with the iphone as well.
On top of that the iphone shatters when dropped from little over a foot. My evo has already survived a nastier one from waste height.

I have minor screen separation that I only noticed when I saw a mention of it while floating around. Yes, I admit the screen is coming up on mine. Lower left, gives a little bit of light leakage. But no one would notice it unless I pointed it out to them. Or they're already aware of the issue and they looked to see ... I don't really see the sinking thing. I feel like the screen seems pretty solid actually. Does this have anything to do with the folks talking about different displays or whatever? I dunno ... cause I definitely don't feel like my screen "sinks" when I man handle it.
I don't get a squeaky noise ... is this a sweaty hands to surface squeak?
My kick stand doesn't make a noise ... but it does get warm when I'm maxing my phone out .... as far as a noise I cannot honestly say I've heard this.
Remember to hold the iPhone 4 correctly.
With your fingertips.
I blame my ISP.
Sorry for the double post.

I totally get what you are saying. I almost felt that holding the phone vertically felt alright ... but sitting horizontally I wasn't entirely feeling it.
Although I should admit that there are some other phones out there that are entirely MORE uncomfortable. It's a matter of preference, I know, and even with that a lot of folks throw cases and what not on. I do not, so that's something I would be forced to get used to. Not cool.
Especially if forced to rock a bumper ... I would cry.
Well ... here ya go - no squeaky kickstand issues;
And to think everyone was laughing at the kickstands .... it just makes sense.
Who laughs now!!1! Who laughs now!

Defect - Plastic around the screen cracking with light use.

I was cleaning my 9 months old Galaxy Note today, and noticed micro fine cracks, (THREE OF THEM!!) around the plastic that is surrounding the screen. I never dropped it or handled it rough. It was always in a protective case, with a screen protector.

There is a similar post for the AT&T model.
Since I got the unlocked international version through Amazon, I have no warranty support at all here in U.S. This sucks.
If I had known about this problem, I would have never bought this phone. I am really pissed, and will not buy any Samsung phones designed this way.
I've read that Galaxy S3 also has this problem. I imagine that Note 2 will probably be the same.

Wow, so offensive here. No I'm not drunk. Yes I know it's just a device, albeit a poor quality one. it's not a scratch, it's a real crack. A plastic piece separated into two or more pieces. Big difference there. Third, I'm not trolling so please stop trolling.
I paid $600 for a high end device, and I expect a certain level of quality with that price tag. I'm not as rich as you guys so I take care of my gadgets and use it for at least two years. I found mine having this crack after 9 months of careful use, most likely developed over time. It's just now that I found this while cleaning it.
This is not an isolated issue as I can easily find people with same issues. Here are some of the "0.001% of people" complaining about the cracks because the bad build quality/material.

I don't understand why you guys are so defensive about this.
I bought my black note in Feb 2012. I just looked at mine with a magnifying glass, no micro cracks in mine. Little rough on one corner where my Macbook Air fell on it, what a heart attack that was. It just ripped my screen protector. I say just throw a tpu cover on it and forget about it.
White historically has issues. The HTC One X had issues with white and I remember the White HTC Vouge for Verizon had a slight cracking issue. I wonder in order to make it white they have to add too much TiO2 in and less plasticizer making it more brittle. I usually try to avoid white phones.
Just checked my black Note, purchased in November 2011. No cracks at all, and I've dropped it a couple of times including one time when I dropped it face down onto a wet concrete floor (the rough type you find outdoors).

You pretty much have to expect rudeness when posting here. Report them or ignore them.
As for the warranty -- are you sure you don't have one? Check with Amazon. I thought anyone selling in the US has to provide the manufacturer warranty.
Of course they might not cover cracks anyway since it would be hard to prove it wasnt dropped.

I dropped my Note couple of times and i've got at least 20 scratches and guess what?
I don't give a f**k
I buyed a damn phone, he didn't buy me for me to be his slave
Im also proud of the little dents and scratches as long as I caused them and I can get the phone up and working again.
But i can never defend the build quality which is less than satisfactory.
Well, Samsung uses "cheap plastic" but then again look at Apple - most expensive anodized aluminum and 1/3 of iphones 5 came scratched out of box.
What i'm trying to say... im just like you, i treat my gadgets like eggs, but we're talking about things we use all day every day - they will get damaged no matter how you try so its best to get over it. Anyway i think your case is not very common.
about this micro cracking, don't wast your time to send your phone to sammy, i try it ( because me too i don't think sutch craking are normale on a 600€ phone ) and sammy don't take that in warenty, they sad it my fault... crap plastic and crap warenty... it was clear that sammy don't wan't to eard about that lol
I got some cracks and spots on my note to but it is better to have crack in ur phone then have phone in ur crack.
My name is luxor and i am a flash-o-holic and xda is my pusherman.
I checked mine too. I got it in August 2012. Im pretty careful with it also. Got a case for it too. I found one of those cracks on the right side. To be honest..its covered with my case..and its not on my screen...Its not a big deal.

My Mrs has a white note and hers does have cracks the same as the OP, but then she does have Teflon hands hahaha

Subpar Samsung Design

Samsung really need to choose good materials for builing flagships. Although Note 2 is very powerfull but materials used is very dissappointing. Same with Sgs3. I used to own a HTC ONE X and its one of the sexiest device i have ever seen except for protruding camera everything was perfect. Hope samsung does better with GALAXY SIV or else i have to get HTC flagship........

I think the materials on the Note 2 are perfectly fine, given that we need to be able to remove the back cover to get to the battery and MicroSD card.
I used to really like HTC phones, but until they allow me to change the battery again, they won't be seeing any more of my money. Whilst the Note 2 has epic battery life and I seldom need to change it, I still require the ability to do so.
MicroSD I can live without as long as I've got a minimum of 64gb internal storage.

Dave

Exactly.
Its not as if someone walks you into the shop at gun point and tells you to buy a phone is it?
There is no perfect phone is there? HTC do some things well, Samsung do other things well and Apple, well they TELL you they do everything well and every other phone is inferior and the iSheep believe them!

so go ahead and get the HTC. sheesh!
I had a Teg3 One X and was quite happy with it. The battery was at best marginal and I had to carry around battery boosters (small at home, large on the road) and was constantly thinking "should I really do a web browsing session or watch a video?" because I was always afraid I'd get a long call and be screwed. You shouldn't have to "ration" your usage of a high-end smartphone in 2012/3. The Teg3 One X had 32GB of storage which, for me, was adequate. 11GB of user accessible fixed storage on the One XL and DNA is laughable.
This is from HTC's website describing the Butterfly. Now that their having to explain their poor battery choices in their marketing material maybe someone from product development will get the message. Kind of sad that putting form over function has them rationalizing their decisions to their prospective customers.
Enjoy comfort and style right in the palm of your hand. Thanks to innovative stacking methodology, the HTC Butterfly is slimmer, curvier, and more comfortable than any other phone of its kind. Instead of placing the battery on top of the working parts, we install ours directly into the case first, leaving room for design without compromise – and comfort beyond compare.
As for the materials Samsaung uses their fine and certainly of respectable quality. I don't think anyone doesn't cringe when they pull the paper thin plastic back cover off a Samsung device. But, they are durable, you can replace the back cover for $20 USD if you scratch it, and the design allows the phone to distribute impact better if you drop it.
I'd like to see a One X or DNA pass the 5' drop test.

I love the design and materials of HTC's phones but I'm not willing to accept the comprimises necessary to buy one anymore. And I'm guessing I'm not the only one that feels that way based on their ever declining market share.

Well I hate Samsung for several reasons, build materials is one of them. Plastic? Jeez! And why I use Samsung is upto me, really won't bother about any lectures!
My other phone is iPhone 5, which is far superior in its used materials, well that's why I didn't bother to pay 800$.

scribbled from my note 2 (N7100)
I love HTC design! But I have absolutely no problems with Samsung for using plastic. It keeps weight down, plastic does something for the heat in the phone, so that's also a good thing... I have had 3 samsung devices, and no creaks and no problems EVER. Yet I've had 4 iPhone 4's and they've all had issues. Never getting another apple device. Dell Streak was made of all metal or aluminum or something, caused A LOT of problems.
I love samsung devices. The plastic is fine! Don't complain! If you do, just save us ALL the time and effort of typing these messages and ... JUST DONT GET IT! I mean, come on! You KNEW it was made of plastic BEFORE You bought it. You probably opened it before taking it home, and if you saw it was plastic and didn't like it you could have returned it right then and there at the store. Sell it on eBay if you must!
I personally like the plastic. Is an HTC "better built?" I don't know, but it FEELS great in hand! Would I buy an HTC One X? NO! Because I need to be able to do battery pulls / exchanges and expandable memory oh my god! WITHOUT a DOUBT! I need it.

I also came from the hox - I found the build quality excellent but the phone is subpar in comparison to the note 2.
I don't mind the plastic as long as it's got a case. The back cover very rarely comes off other than to compare the battery with my mates sg3.
The note 2 does exactly what it says on the tin for me- where the hox didn't. I always had battery anxiety when I was using the phone and the thing kept overheating when using satnav or just playing angry birds.
I personally think Samsung got the design spot on with the note 2. It feels robust and dosent Creek like the one x did on phone calls.

htc one matches macbook pro design

I was reading a review of the HTC One (I know, I'm behind) and I came to the realization that the design of the HTC One nicely matches the design of my Retina Macbook Pro. It has the same white aluminum design, speaker grilles are the same type, and white accents match the ports and other white accents of the Macbook. Compare these:

It makes me wonder why there isn't a very consistent design ethos with Apple's products, I feel like it would be really cool if they kept the same design cues.

I think you're reading too much into it; both devices use aluminium and speakers have a grid of holes to allow for passage of sound.
There's nothing cool about "keeping design cues" across companies -- only leads to litigation and overall aggravation.
I think its pretty nice to be rocking all aluminum devices. Aluminum is just so nice looking. The only reason I would ever want a Macbook would be because of the build quality. I like my custom PC though, and don't really have the need to carry around a laptop. If I did though it would probably be a macbook. Either that or an expensive Asus since they also have some nice aluminum style laptops/ultrabooks for high prices. Maybe one day.

I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say. For that, I apologize. I meant that it would be cool if Apple kept design cues across its own entire line, not between separate companies' products.

The problem I have with ASUS laptops is that their touchpads were always so finicky. Although, I really do want one of their touchscreen ultrabooks. My rMBP is pretty good in terms of performance and battery life, plus the screen is downright gorgeous.
I have been an iphone user since 3gs. Had all models except the iphone 5 which was a great dissapointment. I expected a radikal design change and got...meh. Design like the HTC One was more or less what I expected from iphone 5 but never got. And also the fact that IOS has looked the same since my 3gs back in 2009 made me switch to Android.
This was what I was expecting from iphone5: http://www.inrumor.com/in/technology/iphone-5-design-by-patrick-eckert-brilliant-concept/
Doesnt matter now, HTC One looks great. Cant wait to get it . Dont really know what I meant by above rambling except that I agrees that it looks like macbook pro design

I believe that Apple was sue-happy when Jobs was in power, but Tim Cook is pretty against it. It doesn't seem like the HTC One really infringes on Apple design patents, but I'm not an IP lawyer, so...

I like how it tapers just like the macbook pros. Not as much as the Air (cause that would just feel weird in your hand) but tapering to a thinner edge. It provides that super-thin illusion. But it's just that, an illusion. Which kind of pisses me off. Looking at other designs, it seems that HTC definitely could have engineered a thinner phone, but left an extra couple of mm's. Not that it truly matters, but it's those kinds of things that people like to compare in the real world.

Yes, you're totally right. It LOOKS thinner than most phones out there, but its actually "fatter". It's only 4mm at the edges, so that's the reason.
The iPhone 5 is 7.5(?)mm thin, but the One looks as thin. The S4 is under 8mm thick, but it looks kinda chubby compared to the One. Nexus 4 is 8.5mm or something, but it looks like a freaking brick. Now, 9.3mm isn't thick at all, but even a thinner device can look like a brick. Xperia Z is 7.7mm, looks fatter than the One too.

First thing Steve Jobs did when he got through the pearly gates was Sue God for claiming to have invented the apple.

This phone has the worst build quality ever.

My first one had dead pixels and was scuffed already from just being in the box. My second one wouldn't charge and was scuffed in the box. I've got my third one but it's scuffed in the box, though so far nothing else wrong with it. However each one has had a problem where the speaker covers don't sit flush, like... I swear they're glued on because you can push them in, should be screwed in tbh. What I've noticed as well is the metal has been poorly cut, it's not level, it has little marks in it and especially around the 3.5mm jack and USB port, the metal is rather jaggy and part of the plastic is flaking away too.
I'm interested in a second one, just badly made phones, I swear HTC have downgrading their quality inspection to get these phones out like those horrible Nexus 4 phones. I'm just gonna get a refund and buy that ugly boring GS4, it's basically the same phone only Samsung Phones I've had in the past have been properly made.
I wanted to like this phone, I'm bored of the Galaxy design, however... the phone quality just sucks.

i think this phone build quality is really great if i'm honest, the Samsungs plastic feel/build quality is a lot worse, perhaps you were just unlucky in the handsets you received out of the box
We have more than few threads discussing imperfections and issues on early batch
HTC subtly admitted it when they delayed the entire launch and specifically mentioned camera and casing as the reason, yes they called it short of supplies but it actually meant they discovered low yields
Anyway all you can do is either wait for the April batches and exchange or start now until u get a perfect one
What is for sure however what you have now is not a proper representation for this device final build quality
keywords: Defect, Warranty
We had the same drama during the One X, defects cleared within 2 months, or took me 2 exchanges, my final one was manufactured in April
Enjoy the GS4

in 13 march you said
,,I want plastic, I want a removable battery and a Micro SD. You know the only reason they want to design these features out is cause it saves money, they can charge for cloud storage and they blame a removable battery and Micro SD for helping piracy along. It's all about stopping your choice and the irony of it is, taking these features out probably costs less, is less premium and these "premium" metal and glass materials just means more money for this companies in repairs, especially with a non removable battery.,,
and you didn,t like either htc one camera
,,The camera has a lot of noise, not very sharp either,,
but you still bought HTC ONE, and also changed TWICE...
VERY INTERSTING FACTS
I'm gonna have to refund it and get another phone soon because you only get like a month to change your mind....
The camera I didn't think would be this bad quality, it's like super grainy to the point where if you zoom in slightly, there is no quality what do ever.
The only thing I like is the speakers on the front, though the headphone quality sucks? It's nowhere near as good as my 920 was. The screen is too small also for a 1080 display... I don't see anything super exciting about it.
Just not impressed and the imperfections disappoint me.
