[SUGGESTION] Merging Photon and Atrix forums - Atrix 4G General

Atrix and Photon have exactly the same hardware (Except some minor differencies), they have the same firmwares (Again with some minor differencies), so they have the same issues, the same news. That's why I suggest to merge Photon and Atrix forums to establish a better link with Photon owners.
This modification would make the ideas and news spread faster, and that would make a more unified community for our devices, so why not ?

I don't really think this is a good idea as not everything that works on the ATRIX works on the Photon and vice-versa. This may cause confusion between the new members (some may happily flash something built for the Photon on their Atrix and get a brick, who knows )
But still, maybe they could merge the general, Q&A and themes and apps section, but keep the development section separated.

I think the OP raises good points, but so does tatperson with the confusion. We already get quite a bit of confusion just between international vs american atrix.

Also, take note of the new users, who come in, do not read and go flashing & bricking. Definitely this is a NOT unless people learns how to use & read forums before doing useless stuff in their phones.
Sorry if there has been any offense meant, but, it has not been very much since I've joined the forum and all I see is new people who likes to barge in, screw their phones, flashing stuff then asking the same question across 20 threads or demanding stuff.... hell... well, i guess that's a forums destiny or maybe day after day i'm less tolerant to people .
Dammit, I'm getting old

I agree this is not a good idea. While the devices are quite similar, they are in fact different enough to each have their own board.
Just ask Th3Bill how "minor" his framework edits usually are. Another point - although he'd like to, he can't use Epinter's CM10 as a base because it's way too different and won't run on a Photon.

i do not think its a good idea, simply because they arent the same phone. it could be similar, but will never be the same phone = not the same roms, not the same guides and diffrent people who has the phones.
but i do think that we can have general, thems and apps and even accseroies at same fourms, but android developmnt - one for each

Yeah, i also agree. The photon uses a different Webtop too, so even Webtop Development is different.

Inde, the confusion for the new members is a good point. I had this idea because they did this for the Defy and the Defy (+) that have the same hardware and share many ROMs but it's a case almost similar to the Photon and the Atrix.
But if merging the forums isn't possible, is there any way to make a stronger link between Atrix and Photon forums ? This could help for both communities, and make a stronger one since many people left these phones for more recent ones.

Stronger Bond: Developers

You know, was kinda thinking the same thing recently, all I can say is that we should share the things we have in common. Like, certain dev projects ported here and there between our devices, certain other stuff. And also bunch up our devs lol, like rope everyone in to attain 'perfection' on both our devices
How about a test forum section? And a poll maybe, so we'll see how successful this will be.

ROM Vote - Support Your Favorites!

I posted in an earlier thread that I was getting worried that there is so much noise in the Evo development section that high quality ROMs by dedicated programmers were getting lost in the fracas of those that feel slapping a new wallpaper on a ROM qualified as its own distribution.
I was thinking that the best solution would be to see if the community would be interested in a way to uprank and downrank distributions in a one stop gateway that would help everyone clearly see which ROMs are the brightest and the best.
To that effect, I've created a Google Moderator series that lists ROMs. You can put a checkbox next to the ones you support, and an X if there is one (or some) in particular that you had some bad mojo with. If one you love isn't there, you're more than free to add it yourself to get the voting going!
The best part is, you can change your votes at any time!
http://bit.ly/aaZbOD
This may work, this may suck. Time will tell if this can become at all useful
If you dig this idea, please bump it for awareness. Otherwise, we can let it disappear.
No harm, no foul
We've had 15 people contribute so far. The more we get, the more comprehensive the data!
I'll bump this. Before I used to check the thread rating and whichever ROM thread had the best rating, I would go in and test it out. This could help out.
This'll definitely help in deciding a ROM to flash. Bump.
Sure I'll support this...
NOTE: please don't use this list as a bible...once we start rooting phones, they can tend to have a mind of their own. Some roms run great on some phones but are unstable on others. Same goes for kernels and themes. Remember, YMMV.
Great Idea.

Agreed. Hopefully the whole "wisdom of the crowds" thing can at least push people in the right direction.
You all owe it to yourself and your phone to read the threads associated with these ROMs before flashing though!
I removed two added suggestions that did not follow the style of the vote. Please add roms not "MORE ROMS PLZ"
Awesome idea. Will vote.
Sticky this. I think it would clear up alot of questions too. Id say combine this idea with the release matrix from androidspin.com would be great.
for reference to what im talking about

sent from my baby. . . the evo 4-gees
I think that it's a great idea to add some sorting/ratings/details about all the roms out there, to anyone that hasn't been on these forums a while I'd assume it's quite overwhelming.
I'm not sure what the best idea is, as voting in a thumbs up/down fashion might not be the greatest way to show evaluation, I'm sure a lot of people with negatives are gonna be the ones with bugs or couldn't get it to work right.
In the end, I think rom reviews would be ideal, if we could get someone to do them. I remember shopping for a Nintendo DS cart, if anyone is familiar with them, and I found a website that had frequently updated reviews of the different available cartridges from the various teams that made them, and even though everyone knew the R4 brand cartridge I was able to get a good feel for the developers and features I was choosing from and I chose another brand that I was quite happy with.
I think voting makes it a popularity vs people with bugs/problems contest, more detailed voting (stars/categories) would end up being too tedious for most, and the spreadsheets, tho useful, don't really tell you everything you need to know.
Reviewers can also make the community more aware of who is making our kernels, the differences between them, available themes, battery life comparisons, etc.
We just need to find some people that swap roms enough and would be willing to do the write ups...
i think it will become a popularity contest which is part of the point, but the problem i see is that there are many die hard fans of this rom or that rom and i have no doubt they will negatively rate other roms just to try to move there fav rom up the list whether or not they used the rom, was something wrong with it, or not.
I think any type of ranking system is more hurtful then helpful. If you are a dev for a rom that isnt as popular or is new you may show at the bottom of the list even though your rom is bug free stable and fast. If people use this list as a true reference they will see your rom at the bottom or not on it at all and assume your rom isnt very good this could be very discouraging to the devs that even though they work hard and have a very solid rom they may not get many users and may be considered a "bad" rom since they haven't been around as long or arent one of the big 4-5 that people frequently use.
just my take on it. i like the review idea of the above user that along with nief's rom comparison that actually compares performance and battery life i think is the most helpful personally giving every rom its fair chance. it also takes popularity out of it to some degree and gives newer roms a fair chance vs coming in down 1000 votes.
I agree but people certainly do gravitate toward quality.
I took a lot of time to think about what the best way of doing this would be, and Moderator seems to be the best idea:
1. Reviews get outdated with each iteration. What you cite as problems now, can be fixed tomorrow.
2. The benchmarking idea is also bad since each phone is different. My phone pegged in the high 40s on old Linpack on most ROMs where others were seeing mid thirties. Again, outdated is an issue.
3. A poll on the site doesn't allow for other ROMs to be added easily
4. You can always change your mind.
Unfortunately, since the question is "what is everyone's favorite ROMs" is technically a popularity question, a popularity contest is what it is.
shameless TTT
Bump! Sticky?
Bump for fantastic happy goodness.
If this would have saved us from the inevitable 400 other threads started each week asking, "which ROM should I flash?", I think it could have been a great idea!
You have my vote I support it.

That is brilliant. Can't believe I did not post it first, it is a peeve of mine, big time.
I would like to see this as well.
I support this!
It was like that at first, but I think they did this so that people wouldnt start flashing things on their phones without knowing which one it's for.
I wouldnt mind a general "Galaxy S General" forum though.
yes, this would be a definite plus. and give us an off topic section for us sgs users as well.
+1 .....10 char

Wow...
I didn't at first, but I found my self looking at the other forums today because its really obvious that there is tons of cross over. Of course I'd agree that development should be seperate, but cases and other things should totally be combined.
I just hope my sticky stays a sticky

It wasn't exactly like that at first I think..more precisely only the i9000 forum existed as it was the only device out at the time..
Right now we got almost the devices out the door and most of the stuff are compatible..if not minor tweaks make it compatible...
But yes thats exactly what the proposal will do..it will separate out the development with some room for cross development and keep the other categories like general the same
As long as the development sections are separate I think this its a good idea..
Especially if we have enough mods to watch over us...
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
and also take out the Galaxy Spica subsection which no one seems to use.
I do like the idea though the only thing I'm worried about is people getting confused in the development section. And I'm assuming since the software is basically the same for all the phones then themes would work across all phones.
yeah that might be an issue. if we do merge, I think it's best if people start id'ing their thread with something like
[CAPT] dadada
[VIBR] dadada
[EPIC] dadada
Let me clear things up a bit....the Development thread will have sub-forums for each device...so anything that is unique or only for 1 device will be in the sub-forum...things that work on all devices or multiple devices will go into the main Development forum where we will tag it something like this "[V][C][F]" which would mean works for Vibrant, Captivate, Fascinate only.
I agree, checking all the other SGS forums is a litle annoying.

I was under the impression that the Vibrant and Captivate don't use the same cases (Captivate has lines vs curves), so already there is an instance where this idea falls apart.
Theres going to be a SGS with a keyboard soon, that case won't be compatible with cases for the other phones.
So....we could mix the Vibrant and i9000 forums because they're basically the same form factor, but why bother.
There is enough different about all these phones that it's probably better keeping them separated.
-----
EDIT:
With that said, when there is an issue with one phone, it does seem to carry over to the others and it is freaking annoying having to delve the forums of the other phones to find a solution.
Unfortunately, what is the "better" solution? Either one is going to be somewhat confusing for somebody.
Bump.
To the people that still doesn't know about this idea, please go vote if you would like to see the big Galaxy S family forum merged.
Thanks.

They did it with so many other phones, why not the galaxy s series?
I don't get it, and not many do. I came from the touch pro series and it doesn't bother me to have separate subs; rapheal is a great example of how it works out to combine em in one.

This would help a lot!
I'd be okay with merging the Vibrant, Captivate, and that Verizon model, but I feel that the Galaxy S is too different in both hardware and software to merge it. Do we really want to be dealing with people who flashed the wrong ROM that was in the same forum?

If you read the post the Development forums will have separate subforums for device specific stuff...but things like General and etc will be merged so more people will be able to assist you..our device are pretty much 95%-99% identical.
I think its a pretty good idea. We don't want development scattered. United we stand strong!

yup! and more development = win for us all...
Please make this happen!
*Flashed back to the Hero forum before they where separate* Horrible Idea wanting to put CDMA and GSM phones in the same area - many a Hero where sent to an early grave by mixing the Dev boards for these 2. Someone posts a GSM radio update and a CDMA guy gets it thinking "Hey, what the Hell, couldn't hurt!" and there goes their $500.00 phone. Then they something about having insurance replace it and a huge debate starts over insurance fraud. And I've been told that insurance on the Epic is a one time use, then they drop it and you are Ef'd on a second one.
So consider this my vote against a huge forum of all GS devices. Also, with the hardware differences on a kernel level I have to think this would be a developer nightmare. As active as all 5 boards are already, there would be no way to keep up as a community to help each other out. Your thread would be buried in 10 minutes and we would have to deal with 5 times as many people asking stupid "Which rom is the best" or "How do I root my phone" questions without searching.

The proposition includes having separate development forums for each device. Only the General and Apps forums would be combined. Check out the link in the OP for more info.

[DISCUSSION] Heads-up - Forum merge (Desire Z and G2) is coming soon !

I've been talking to svetius, the admin responsible for "User Experience" at XDA, and apparently the Desire Z and G2 forums are going to be merged very soon now.
So this is just a heads-up for everyone to expect this.
I think it's going to be a very very good thing, because after all the DZ and G2 are essentially the same phones and run the same custom ROMs, so it will be good to have everything in one place. I think it will also encourage people who develop things to check how they work on both the DZ and G2.
I've no idea how existing threads are going to be handled, but I'm sure the mods have it all in hand.
So soon, remember that we're going to be sharing an audience with G2 users, who of course have their own stock ROM, which don't have HTC Sense in. So when we post up about a basic problem with out phones, it's going to make it even more important to say which phone/ROM you have !

That's no different for lots of other phones which have different ROMs in different areas though. We already have the issue within the DZ forum where people have Asian ROMs of various types, Bell ROMs, European ROMs etc. But we get along ok with that don't we ?
With my previous Touch Pro 2, we had one forum even though AT&T phones had a different ROM and keyboard layout (and a different name for the phone, i.e. Tilt 2, and that worked fine - e.g. all could run the same custom ROMs, just like the G2 and DZ can run the same custom ROMs.

I agree with steviewevie. I'm also a refugee from the Touch Pro 2 forum. Including different carriers, versions, regions into the discussion is fine, as long as people remember to mention which version they have (have to be "gently" reminded from time to time), and there are enough people from your particular community that can give you help.
I'm pretty new to the DZ forum, and already I find myself having to search around on both forums to make sure I haven't missed a solution that the G2 owners have come up with. There is no significant difference between the G2 and the DZ, and it doesn't make sense for them to have separate forums.
Further to this, if you've caught up with postings over on the DZ side here, then why not hop over to the G2 forums if you haven't done so already, and see what they're discussing ?
You'll see it's pretty similar to over here, though sometimes they might come up with a problem before us DZ folks do, and vice versa.
woo about time, no more reading the same thread on 2 forums
about time! There is not enough difference in between the phones to keep them seperate. I imagine all you have to do at the beginning of a thread is say "this is for XXXXXX only" and that will make it pretty clear for most.
The Z forums are a joke, thank god for this....
The z forums are like a specials song "Ghost Town". I always hum that tune when im entering the land of the Z forum lol

I had to chime in on this one...How many nbs do you find that actually READ the warnings?
It would be really useful if everyone had a signature making it clear which phone/ROM they have. But of course there will be plenty of newcomers who don't have that initially.
No matter what you try to introduce there will always be those that fall outside of the realms of stupidity, especially here on xda
Please tell me which you prefer:
1. Full Merge
Four forums (the usuals) for both the G2 and DZ
2. Dev Merge
Merge DZ with G2 dev forum, delete DZ dev forum (which will have zero threads). Keep individual G2/DZ forums for general, accessories, themes and apps.
Full merge, please.
Yep, Full merge please.
1. Full Merge.
Someone in the G2 thread has suggested merging all of them but keeping seperate General sections as a temp measure specifically for the noobs. What does everyone think?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Full merge. Or that ^
Personally I don't see why the General sections need keeping on their own, from the TP2 forum I'm used to threads about AT&T stuff which don't affect me so I just ignore them, similarly I'd not be too bothered about T-Mobile-specific threads from G2 owners in a merged forum.
There are so many "General" issues in common between the two phones.
I guess a full merge isn't that bad. I see quite a few of the general forum topics are questions. Just gotta make sure keep em in the Q&A section.

Why does the ROM get it's own forum unlike others?

This question has been asked here (http://www.xda-developers.com/android/from-the-bbq-omnirom/) but seems didn't get a reply from mods.
what makes it so special compared to other ROMs like AOKP/PA which are just threads in the device forums. Pulser_g2 has mentioned transparency in another post in the past but this forum section seems to go above forum rules. thanks
You know i've been wondering that myself...not that i care really. I'm more excited about wanting to port it lol ...will still be nice to know

then why not just create the relevant threads on the supported devices?
I never saw a dev/maintainer having problems communicating with its users on the device threads.

My guess (purely a guess) is because there is meant to be more community discussion around new features. CM seems to just be lead devs in private discussions about upcoming stuff, the rest of us know about it when the commits start to roll.
This sort of "upcoming feature" talk is more appropriate in a central forum, rather than spread across x amount of individual device threads that noone will ever read. The "Feature Development" sub also sort of confirms this a bit.

The plan is for these forums to be for coordination between developers on device-independent stuff. I also hope to have, eventually, a "neutral ground" where the leads of various projects can communicate. There are always going to be things (usually differences in UI/UX direction) that drive the existence of multiple projects - but there are a lot of areas where the work done is common and I think that the various projects can do better communicating.
I would not have any problem with other firmware projects having coordination forums for "core" work here on XDA.
As I've said in other posts - this is the very earliest stages of things, and there are still a lot of details to work out. There's a possibility that the current "omni" forums could change drastically in structure as things get fleshed out better.
Thanks Entropy. clear and concise. couldn't ask for more. all power to the new team/ROM. Competition is ALWAYS good.

It is an experiment - while we can sit around at XDA Towers and come up with wonderful ideas of how to improve things for developers, it's important to see how they work.
In this case we can see how the concept of having a centralised area for non device specific discussions works. It's easier to try it out on something that can be undone if needed, which is starting off slowly.
If that works out, I don't think it takes a genius to imagine the direction that we would look towards in the future.
It's worth noting that Rootzwiki sort of has a similar structure for AOKP and a few others under the "Team Forums" section. Definitely seems like a good structure to experiment with. I know a lot of ROMs tried running their own forums but the problem is that everyone is here and no one wants to make a bunch of new accounts, so this makes more sense in the long run.

Back than seem editing and various other methods of modding
various Motorola phones, starting with the Motorola v3 were discussed.
It worked very well than and should now. Motorola released different phones,
but they all basically had the same but updated firmware.
I am the Administrator of one of the forums that still survives, but not much activity these days.
