Anyone planning on buying a warranty? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK so I bought my nexus 7 thru staples yesterday. I usually don't buy store warranties but they suckered me into getting a 1yr warranty with accidental coverage for 40 bucks. He said as long as I don't activate it I can return it. Now I can say my nexus seems fine. No screen lifts or dead spots so I think I lucked out there. I'm just wondering if that warranty is worth holding onto. Will these notorious issues pop up later in ownership? I mean honestly its a piece of mind for like less then 3 bucks a month I guess.

No one knows. This is googles first tablet and I believed they rushed Asus to produce this in 4 months. Only time will tell.

Should have went with a Square trade warranty. They are doing a special right now where you can get 2 years accidental coverage for $40

Sweet didn't even think of them. Looks like ill go with that instead since both warranties have no deductible.

Sprint TEP

So I'm looking to get on the nexus train with the prime in the fall, but until then I'm casually looking for a ns4g to tide me over. I''ve found one with a broken screen for pretty cheap, and I have TEP from Sprint, so here's my question: if I get the ns4g, activate it on my line, and then take it in for a repair, will they fix it free of charge or will I have to pay a deductible?

They will repair or replace it with a refurb. They could be a stubborn and make you wait 30 days before they will touch it.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
you will not have to wait the 30 days , but you will have to pay a 100 deductible if the screen is broken.

It actually depends how bad. If it is a minor crack less than so many inches they will repair or replace for free. If it is bad cracking or completely shattered then you would have to make an insurance claim

OP has a cracked screen - that and water damage takes deductible to $100 with asurion. If the phone (ie a replacement) is still under its 1 year warranty, and doesn't have one of the above 2 issues then Asurion will swap it for free.
My space bar is split down the middle (still works just annoying), my battery won't hold a charge, every now and then while charging several battery widgets showed the batter charged but loosing power, one of those 3 triangle things (where the battery is, the part that touches the gold squares on the batter) is bent.
Will I have to pay $100 or can I get a new epic free? I had this phone since February 2011 (or 2010 I forget but it was the february after the phone came out)

Take a pick and press in on one of the ext antenna port. This will kill you signal and they will say hardware and replace it for $35. If you have water or broken screen, no luckat all. Simple.

They wouldn't replace mine when I lost it. Signed up for Sprint insurance and now it's only $100.
Its a waste of a $100. Hopefully the Nexus comes out at a good price.

Almost the same money in all ways. If you didnt brake the screen and just the glass, youll prob break it trying to replace it. Also it wont feed the same after you get it that far apart. I would say Ebay and switch the board out. Insurance if you got it. Like I said tho, about the same money. Global Direct is the best place for parts. A few bucks higher than ebay but 100% genuine and will have the adhesive made for it. PM me if you need a price, they hide them.

IMO Playstore is your best bet. Its $14 for shipping, but you get a $25 playstore credit, a free copy of Transformers, and the best warranty service.

You get that anywhere just by activating it.
Don't know where you are. Here you can get them at staples, office Depot and frys electronics.

Walmart. Tax free weekend, I can have it now, and easy returns which unfortunately is a big possibility with this device. In fact, I've already returned one in 12 hrs due to ghosting, back light issues, and image retention. I tried to get the csr to annotate it on the return slip..but she just shrugged and said it was easier to write "doesn't work". Shame, hope it doesn't make it back on the shelf when someone unfamiliar with these issues thinks its fine because it boots and sends it back out into the wild.

I wasn't aware of that but it's still my understanding Google will only handle the warranty if you buy from them otherwise you have to deal with Asus.

And screen protector!
With the price being as low as it is, there's not really a 3rd party insurance that is worth the trouble. If you can get one from say bestbuy, where you get the bestbuy protection plan, its one story. They'll let you get a replacement right off the shelf with no waiting. These 3rd party insurance plans are more expensive to begin with, and they make you mail your hardware half way around the world turning it into a 2 week ordeal to get an issue fixed. The headache of dealing with the insurance company only over the phone and through emails and the longer wait just isn't worth it for something that you can buy for under $200.

The only one I found from Best Buy online was a16gb. It was on "sale" for $279 (I believe) . To make it even better, it was through a 3rd party business. SKETCH!
Walmart has a 2 year replacement plan for $28. Can't beat that.

If you can buy and pick up at the store, they have it. If you're calling the store, they're just gonna tell you it's sold out without checking. Happened to me all day yesterday.

Go through Wally World online. Yeah it might not make it in time but worth the wait. I got my 32 for $249 which wasn't horrible but I was sold on the replacement plan that covers just about anything. And besides, Walmart takes just about anything back.

Squaretrade+case
50 dollars for 3 years of accidental insurance+12 case. Pretty good imo
Squaretrade accidental 2 year policy. It does not cover lost devices but will cover damage with no deductible and a 5 day turnaround. They also hand out coupons like candy so the plan i got was roughly 35 dollars. Which is cheaper than some premium cases. Best option imho

Just itemize it under your homeowners or renters insurance. $200 coverage prob runs about $15 / year depending on who you are with.
I prefer to buy my electronic devices through Best Buy because of their insurance coverage (went through 3 DINC2's and didn't pay a penny to replacr) but they weren't selling them in my area. I ended up buying mine at Office Depot. Insurance was about $70 which I think may be a little too much, but it covers EVERYTHING.

Insurance

I have scroll down questions and answers for a while and I didn't see this question yet ,sorry if has been post before but I was wondering what insurance most of you got ?
pros and cons ?
BTW I'm on T-Mobile ,(not sure if it makes a difference)
I know most new phones are fragile not just the N4 so Im really thinking of getting insurance for this phone..
Thanks a lot

I don't get any. I never drop my phone and I'm responsible so it doesn't get left at bars or restaurants.
If you're doing something where your phone has a chance of getting damaged like working out, running, playing basketball, etc., just leave it at home.

Trust me , I over protect my investment as well , just got rid of my gs3 that I paid full retail price since the release date and it didn't have not one scratch NO where on the phone ,never dropped and clean it at least once a week ,but accidents do happen and to be honest I didn't really enjoy my s3 that way I should of cause I was really worried to drop it or scratch it so I always had a screen protector and a case so of course it made my display look different as well as the phone .

Unfortunate Event
I bought insurance because the last phone I had had a defect in the screen and it one day shattered. Anyway, I bought the nexus 4 and love it. Had it in a case until the other day. Dropped it right out of my vehicle when I got up. Slid on the pavement a good ways. Well the top right of the screen shattered and left half my touchscreen unresponsive. The back of the phone looked like brand new. Then I guess it put too much pressure on the screen while in my pocket and cracked even more down the rest of the screen. Now the whole touchscreen doesn't work. Ordered a replacement through my insurance costing me $150. It is unfortunate, but I am only paying like half of what a new one costs. =(

I have insurance through tmo and I have a rugged case on my n4...personally I like the look and feel of it. Id like to also add that I am responsible with my phone but things happen, that's why its called an accident because its unintentional.
I'd rather pay the 7 bucks a month and sleep better after all that's what insurance is about, no?

Let me tell a tale regarding the insurance... I bought the insurance on my last phone, a Vibrant, and will never, ever buy it again.
About 6 months into having my Vibrant, I get a text one day saying something to the effect of: "please return the damaged hardware in order to avoid charges on your phone bill." I call T-mobile and tell them about the text, they say they don't know about the text (turns out they were correct - Asurion sends out the texts), and assure me that it was probably a mistake and that should be the end of it. Two months later, I open up my T-mobile bill and there are TWO charges for 275.00 a piece. This begins a nightmare of epic proportions. Some low life scum had somehow gotten my insurance info and had managed to file two claims on my insurance and had in essence purchased 2 Vibrants for 125 bucks a piece. After literally HOURS on the phone with both T-mobile and Asurion, I finally managed to get the charges wiped and things cleared up, but not before T-mobile threatened to send the outstanding charges to creditors. I thought the story was over - I even used the insurance to replace my Vibrant that had fallen on the pavement and shattered the screen.
Then, about 6 months later, it happened again. And not just once, but FOUR times. I begged and pleaded with Asurion to set some sort of alert on my account so that any new claims would be verified with me (btw it is incredibly easy to make a false claim against the insurance with basic account information. The kicker is that you can have the replacement phone shipped to ANY address simply by using the online claim form) after the first of the four false claims. They said there was nothing they could do. With each new claim, I had to spend hours on the phone. This was made doubly frustrating by the fact that I had indeed made the only legitimate claim against the insurance. Because T-mobile and Asurion are two completely separate companies, I got minimal cooperation to occur between the two. I will say that T-mobile was always patient and understanding throughout, but I think that had largely to do with the fact that I have been a Powertel/T-mobile customer since the mid-90s.
By the time I actually used the insurance, I was only saving 100 bucks off what a Vibrant would have cost me on Craigslist. I would have gladly paid 100 bucks to make all that trouble and frustration go away. Never again.
