[Q] Nexus Modifications? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I wonder if someone could take the innards of the Nexus 7 and place it into the body of a 10" tablet...
Wondering if this could be possible to hack a quad core processor to a bigger screen without much extra programming or modifying?
Also, why are all the tablets that I have seen only have 1 GB Ram, Is extra Ram really that hard to upgrade or produce without extra or costly manufactures modifications or is it at some kind of technological threshold at this point.
Would really like to see a tablet that could have extra slots for more ram like a laptop.

Questions go in the Q&A section

Nexus 7 Q&A
I believe I posted a question in the "Nexus 7 "Q&A" section. Is this section not for questions, even though it says "Nexus 7 Q&A"? Seriously?

There are quad core 10 inch tablets already available.
There is no need for more than 1GB of RAM. Android uses RAM efficiently enough that 1 should be more than enough.

Unless you modify it like HTC did with the One X. I've read some bad things about how that phone handles background programs.

The One X is a HTC Sense based device which uses more memory/ram natively. This is s aosp device so I don't think we'll have that issue. And as you said HTC modifies things. The Nexus 7 will not be modified unless someone tries to port HTC Sense 4.0 rom for it.

Just get a Transformer Prime or wait on those new Acer ones. Galaxy Note 10 is also going to be a possibility.
Fact is, especially with the Acer and Asus tabs, they're basically stock. Samsung has a Twizzy skin, but I think romming has gone great on it.

The tax and shipping kind of cancels out the cost of that free stuff though. You can get the other tablets, in USA anyway, with no tax or shipping at a lot of retailers. And really, Transformers? Some could say that's a con to buying it

I paid $6.18 for tax and $13.99 for shipping (BFD). So yes I'm happy with what I paid for. If your not don't buy it.

If you have all that money then buy something to keep you busy for another 1-2 months until the motorola xoom tablet comes out or something similar, it will be significantly more powerful than anything out now and have honeycomb on it.
I have no idea why I decided to reply to this thread.
Ingredients:
- 1x 10 inch display
- 1x battery
- 1x Tegra 2 chip (pick up a cheap second hand one from a thrift store)
+ Special ingredient
- 1x Nexus One
1) Place all ingredients in a blender on high for 10 seconds.
2) Pour into a plastic tablet mould.
3) Enjoy!
My NexusTab gets Quadrant scores over 4000 with this setup. Try it!
What about this?

You'd probably spend more time, money, and frustration... and more than likely a failed attempt... verse just buying a Tablet whole.
I just bought a Herotab X5A and it fits the bill. Sure not as fast as a nexus but it was only $150. There are lots of Android Tablets on the market today. If I had to do it over, I would probably buy one with a Cortex A8 based processor and a capacitive touch screen.

Archos 101 or wait?

Hey all,
I've been shopping android tablets for a couple weeks now. After considering the nook color to the galaxy tab, to the viewsonic G, I am now considering the Archos 101.
A tablet for me is a want. Primary uses would be browsing, reading (kindle app?), movies, some games, and I would like to spend less than 300 ( I've seen used 101's for around 270). I also like to mod/root but this is not a must if the stock UI works well. Did see a little developing here on XDA...A nice dark UI on YouTube.
With that said, my question to current Archos 101/70 owners, is would you buy an Archos today or wait it out for other tabs to come out? (Arnova 10 gngrbread model, Amazon tabs, quad core tegra's)
Love the specs on the 101, but does the limited 256mb of RAM hamper the device, and is there a lack of apps optimized for the nice 10in screen? Is the 101 heavy to hold for long periods of time?
Thanks in advance!

1) I would say for you, condering in you uses above, buy the A101. I own it, and i love it!
This is the best Tabet for browsing, chatting and gaming
You won be able to play the future games in a few months (brand new Samurai II works very well - ths game is for Nvidia Tegra devices)
And the best about Archos and exspecially about the A101 - The Price!
2) A little bit, but you'll accostume this
3) Nope^^ Some games have a little bit crappy graphic but not many (for example Stick Cliff Diving)
4) Nope^^ Its extremly light. Its feel like the half of the iPad.
Special Tip:
If you want Honeycomb and play the future Games, you hould wait until Q4 of '11 untill the "Gen9 - A101" will be released
Awesome thanks!
The kindle app?
Whats the max microsd card it can support? 32gb?
Wait. Or buy a transformer or acer iconia.
101 build quality is iffy at best. Screen is terrible. Current fw is totally flaky.

2) I dont read books on my A101 , but i'll test that app and report soon
3) Yep, you're right 32 gb (The first 64 gb card, was just announced) But you have the Usb Host (HDD's and USB Sticks)
Tip:
Cajl (owner of JBMM) recevied a flyer from Archos about a Gen9 Event, if you're interested in that, you should look at it (Theres a Thread around here about this)
the best ereader app for archos is the Nook app. It gives you the freedom of loading in any epub. The kindle app is limited to kindle formatted files. also the nook app has good features. I read alot on my 70it and i have tried just about every app out there. The nook app is the best overall.

Thanks again to all for their input,
and with that said,
I took a look at the GEN 9 devices already on the net .. They look very nice, but I can't justify 500 dollar price tag for my wants..(really a cool tech toy). However, after the release of Gen 9, perhaps Gen 8 prices will drop some.
I also looked into the Iconia and Transformer, and as mentioned, they're too much in cost. I know they're both awesome, but I would really like to stay in that sub-300 range. I have looked at pretty much all the tablets on the market right now, and the 101 seems to offer the most for the money. Especially with the DARK UI that the user on youtube has put over it.
Thanks to all who looked into the Kindle App. I haven't used the nook app, but I have some books I am reading on my Kindle app on my Samsung Fascinate
I have decided that of the current options available, the 101 is the best option out there for the price. If I were to buy today, I would go with it.
However, with the tablet market so exciting right now, I think I'll work on making a rough man cave in the basement (which will need a new LCD TV) and then look into the tablets towards Q4 , "Black Friday" when I bet there will be better deals.
Just curious, can you add more RAM to the 101?

You have this 2 options:
Compcache - This will comprimise a part of your Ram Memory.
Swap - This will add some extra Mb's of Ram out of the normal Flash Memory.

400 Euro which is about 566 US..

Those numbers on the Engadget link were posted back in March. I doubt we'll be seeing those as the actual prices.
I would expect to see the prices pretty close to the Gen8 original pricing.

400 Euro for the 250 GB HDD version
And in the past, Archos sold products for same prices ($=€)
The Prices won't be over 300 dollars for the normal 10.1 Inch variant
good to know, thanks! I guess I'll be waiting!
Do you all think the GEN 8 devices will have some Honeycomb custom ROMS ever? These 101's are going for cheap on ebay, and it's very tempting.

I`m a optimist and i say: YES
sibere just did a test, about how much RAM honeycomb need...(Read here at xda)
and it just need 94 MB! The rest is free RAM
But we need the sources, so we dont get Honeycomb until the Q4 of 2011, when google releases the HC Source Code or the Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) Source Code

There isn't exactly a guarantee on that one. I would assume that we'll be looking at closer to $350 for the 10" model.
We might get HC on the Gen8 devices, but it won't be until after the HC source is released, and we aren't exactly sure when that will be, so don't expect it any time soon (better to assume it will be later rather than sooner).
Honestly, I don't expect official HC on Gen8, maybe some GB love, but not HC.
Also, the test done was JUST for the system, nothing else. We will be running a lot more than just that. You have to include all of the background things that run, so don't expect there to be more than ~80-100MB free at any given time. Currently we see ~110 at best free on FroYo, so I honestly wouldn't expect more than that.

Impact of Nexus 10 on third-party Tablet makers?

I am wondering if hardware companies will have less incentive of making 10" Android tablets now that Google is making their own? Does that mean we won't see an Asus Transformer v4 in the future, for example?

Yeah I agree, we may not see alot of tablets comign out with the screen res that the n10 has i'd expect alot of tablet with the 1920x1080 screen in the transformer infinity. I think most makers will wait for the tegra 4 processor to come out before we see anything substantial being released, I'd say the N10 will be the master of the domain for at least 6 months.
well i beleive we will see new processors ,the tegra 3 is obvious a medium choice for tablets cpu.
i believe we will see tablets with s4 pro ,exynos cpu and 2gb ram as untill now 1 gb is standard ,for resolution i believe may devs will own a nexus 10 so many apps will go up to nexus 10 resolution in the near future and so new tablets will have the same as nexus 10.
the only thing that i find a little disturbing on nexus is the missing sd slot so new tabs may have a future over nexus 10 ...

This will definitely put some serious price pressure on the 10-inchers. It's pretty well known that the BOM on the Samsung Note 10.1 is $260, and they have been selling it for $200 over cost. So now the N10 comes out, and the 16gb model has to be sold pretty near cost -- you can compare features and prices with the iPad BOM, and the total has to be pretty close to the msrp. My point is that, as with the N7, Google is shaving margins pretty thin, and competitors will have to follow suit -- even mighty Apple

It looks like March will be a big month for tablet fans. The Samsung Galaxy S4, with Exynos 5450, is expected. Surely it would be easier to drop that SoC on a tablet, N10-derived or not, as they already have the experience with the 5250, so I would expect tablets to arrive around the same time. T40 is scheduled for Q1 as well, so we may see some interesting head-to-head competition CES, in two months, will shed a lot of light on what to expect in Q1 2013.

Pretty sure the new Note tablet will be built on the experiences of the old and the Nexus 10.
A 12" 2600k tab with Exynos 5450, 8-core Mali T604 and S-Pen magic, if you can wait 6 months and get an additional $100, you'll be in for a treat. (the 10+" screen is wishful thinking, but isn't that the Samsung way? The next big thing).
Ehh, apple won't have to budge the slightest. Let's all be honest here, as much as we hate them, apple (sadly) appeals to a larger crowd. It has that name brand value. No matter what they put out there, lots of people will buy it.

They will always have a large flock of sheep, but it won't be a larger crowd for long. There is going to be a lag between the growth of Android tablets shipped and the growth of quality apps -- as developers are drawn to the platform and have to train up -- but as Android users takes the biggest slice of the market, the maturity of both hardware and software development will improve.
Apple's problem is attracting new customers; they may be selling more tablets, but many are to existing users.

[Q] Wait for next gen or buy Nexus 10?

Hey guys, just wondering if i should wait for the next generation of the Nexus 10 tablet or just buy this one. And any estimate on when the next one will be out? Because i can wait if necessary
There were rumors of the next gen, but then those rumors died down. I personally think the next gen wont be out till end of 2013
We know that the Nexus 7 is getting a new model this summer, no info yet as to the Nexus 10 but I doubt it will get an upgrade this quickly, the tablet only came out 5 months ago. I think the rumors were it would get an upgrade to the Exynos Octo processor, but those rumors were months ago and I doubt they had much truth to begin with. Either way it seems like if that ever was the plan, it isnt going to happen anymore
We may find out more info on the new N7 model, a possible N10 model, and probably the next Android version next month at Google IO
Alright thanks for the replies, so i have an oppertunity to buy a nexus 10 for $400 from a local guy, should i take it? How is the dual core processor compared to a quad? Thats one of the things i was concerned about, and how long do you think this nexus 10 will be good for? (Futureproof)

There are a lot of synthetic benchmarks around showing performance. The general consensus is that the processor is pretty darn good for the current gen. I'm sure there will be lots of releases in 2013 that will blow it out of the water. So future proof is a very hard thing to gauge. You might say that with the meteoric rise of ARM chips that you simply can't get a future proof mobile device at all.
In the real world I have found the power under the hood in the nexus to be great. I have no trouble watching full HD video and gaming is good too. Probably the final word on future proof from a mobile device is going Nexus. You wont spend ages sitting around waiting for OS updates and carrier updates and manufacturer updates.

The amount of cores don't matter as much as the actual speed of those cores. When comparing the Exynos 5 Dual chip in the N10 against the Tegra 3 Quad-core chip in the N7, the Exynos 5 destroys it. The Exynos 5 is also a newer CPU architecture (A15) as well, and currently, there's either very few other devices, or none at all publicly available that have such a chip.
The N10 should go a good while (longer than the current N7 and N4) with how well it can run later Android versions, just due to the specs alone. Also this tablet was (may still be) the best device supported on AOSP (I think all hardware is open-source aside from 1 thing), which is nice for custom ROM's and Kernels.
Battery life is decent. It mainly depends on how you plan on using it though, but I didn't really have any complaints about mine.
So should i buy it for $390? And how can i get free books on it? Thanks a lot guys

Well just for watching/listening to YouTube (sips, gamegrumps etc) and browsing the web at the same time. Once they add split screen and true background multitasking we can talk

Long as you know what I meant. I do a bit more than that, but to each their own. Use what suits you .
The money it costs to get one of these, you could get a nice-ish laptop... Seems like a waste of money in my opinion, but I understand people like to just pick up a thin, light tablet and lie in bed with it and watch things without worrying about the weight, fans, etc of a laptop. Hmmmm. Maybe you can pick up one for about $300 on ebay in a year or two...
32GB is not enough space.
Being a gamer and carrying all my ports and roms with me.
NO not enough.

Damm i can't wait for this amazing tablet ... This will be my next tablet for 100% sure.
They say it can compete with a laptop if you use it for office purposes ( not gaming-ish ).
I'm a blogger and app developer so it will be awesome !

It's a Google device so you are guaranteed by high development and in many custom roms split screen and background multitasking is implented.
Don't worry this device will be amazing.
Chromebook Pixel and Chromebook Pixel 2 are two very high end devices.
Now they finally made it to Android were there is not much high end tablets available.
This one will be a innovation and will start a new market where Android tablets can perform like an office laptop ( not pc gaming ofc ) while it still profits all the amazing android original tablet purposes
So, I paid almost that much for my Note 10.1 when released, but I don't think I'll go for another expensive Android tablet. The price is getting close to Surface Pro range.

Those are two different kinds of products though. Those who buy Pixel C are not the kind of people who would be interested to Surface Pro.
I bought the Note 10.1 too, *exactly* because I didn't want another laptop and the "desktop experience". If I want the desktop experience that is also very portable I buy an Ultrabook, it's cheaper than Surface pro and easier to use for "Desktop experience"...
