Archos 101 or wait? - Gen8 General

Hey all,
I've been shopping android tablets for a couple weeks now. After considering the nook color to the galaxy tab, to the viewsonic G, I am now considering the Archos 101.
A tablet for me is a want. Primary uses would be browsing, reading (kindle app?), movies, some games, and I would like to spend less than 300 ( I've seen used 101's for around 270). I also like to mod/root but this is not a must if the stock UI works well. Did see a little developing here on XDA...A nice dark UI on YouTube.
With that said, my question to current Archos 101/70 owners, is would you buy an Archos today or wait it out for other tabs to come out? (Arnova 10 gngrbread model, Amazon tabs, quad core tegra's)
Love the specs on the 101, but does the limited 256mb of RAM hamper the device, and is there a lack of apps optimized for the nice 10in screen? Is the 101 heavy to hold for long periods of time?
Thanks in advance!

1) I would say for you, condering in you uses above, buy the A101. I own it, and i love it!
This is the best Tabet for browsing, chatting and gaming
You won be able to play the future games in a few months (brand new Samurai II works very well - ths game is for Nvidia Tegra devices)
And the best about Archos and exspecially about the A101 - The Price!
2) A little bit, but you'll accostume this
3) Nope^^ Some games have a little bit crappy graphic but not many (for example Stick Cliff Diving)
4) Nope^^ Its extremly light. Its feel like the half of the iPad.
Special Tip:
If you want Honeycomb and play the future Games, you hould wait until Q4 of '11 untill the "Gen9 - A101" will be released

Awesome thanks!
The kindle app?
Whats the max microsd card it can support? 32gb?

Wait. Or buy a transformer or acer iconia.
101 build quality is iffy at best. Screen is terrible. Current fw is totally flaky.

2) I dont read books on my A101 , but i'll test that app and report soon
3) Yep, you're right 32 gb (The first 64 gb card, was just announced) But you have the Usb Host (HDD's and USB Sticks)
Tip:
Cajl (owner of JBMM) recevied a flyer from Archos about a Gen9 Event, if you're interested in that, you should look at it (Theres a Thread around here about this)

the best ereader app for archos is the Nook app. It gives you the freedom of loading in any epub. The kindle app is limited to kindle formatted files. also the nook app has good features. I read alot on my 70it and i have tried just about every app out there. The nook app is the best overall.

Thanks again to all for their input,
and with that said,
I took a look at the GEN 9 devices already on the net .. They look very nice, but I can't justify 500 dollar price tag for my wants..(really a cool tech toy). However, after the release of Gen 9, perhaps Gen 8 prices will drop some.
I also looked into the Iconia and Transformer, and as mentioned, they're too much in cost. I know they're both awesome, but I would really like to stay in that sub-300 range. I have looked at pretty much all the tablets on the market right now, and the 101 seems to offer the most for the money. Especially with the DARK UI that the user on youtube has put over it.
Thanks to all who looked into the Kindle App. I haven't used the nook app, but I have some books I am reading on my Kindle app on my Samsung Fascinate
I have decided that of the current options available, the 101 is the best option out there for the price. If I were to buy today, I would go with it.
However, with the tablet market so exciting right now, I think I'll work on making a rough man cave in the basement (which will need a new LCD TV) and then look into the tablets towards Q4 , "Black Friday" when I bet there will be better deals.
Just curious, can you add more RAM to the 101?

You have this 2 options:
Compcache - This will comprimise a part of your Ram Memory.
Swap - This will add some extra Mb's of Ram out of the normal Flash Memory.

400 Euro which is about 566 US..
http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/20/sneak-peek-at-archos-gen-9-tablets-1-6-ghz-dual-core-a9-process/

Those numbers on the Engadget link were posted back in March. I doubt we'll be seeing those as the actual prices.
I would expect to see the prices pretty close to the Gen8 original pricing.

400 Euro for the 250 GB HDD version
And in the past, Archos sold products for same prices ($=€)
The Prices won't be over 300 dollars for the normal 10.1 Inch variant

good to know, thanks! I guess I'll be waiting!

Do you all think the GEN 8 devices will have some Honeycomb custom ROMS ever? These 101's are going for cheap on ebay, and it's very tempting.

I`m a optimist and i say: YES
sibere just did a test, about how much RAM honeycomb need...(Read here at xda)
and it just need 94 MB! The rest is free RAM
But we need the sources, so we dont get Honeycomb until the Q4 of 2011, when google releases the HC Source Code or the Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) Source Code

There isn't exactly a guarantee on that one. I would assume that we'll be looking at closer to $350 for the 10" model.
We might get HC on the Gen8 devices, but it won't be until after the HC source is released, and we aren't exactly sure when that will be, so don't expect it any time soon (better to assume it will be later rather than sooner).
Honestly, I don't expect official HC on Gen8, maybe some GB love, but not HC.
Also, the test done was JUST for the system, nothing else. We will be running a lot more than just that. You have to include all of the background things that run, so don't expect there to be more than ~80-100MB free at any given time. Currently we see ~110 at best free on FroYo, so I honestly wouldn't expect more than that.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 V Tegra 3 Device

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 OR Wait for Tegra Three devices?
I would also allow for you to suggest other devices but please only android and please only 10 inch tablets.
Also the new tegra three devices might not be as thin or good-looking as the samsung which i really care about.
The only reason i like tegra is because of the support it has in the android app developing community so please try to keep the suggestions to tegra devices unless you have a good reason to contradict it.
This is simple for me.
If you can wait, wait.
If not go for it.
I couldn't wait
If you can wait, it means you will NEVER buy a device lol. When Tegra 3 devices come out, Tegra 4 will be announced. I passed on the galaxy tab to wait for a tegra 2 device and now I hear nvidias "Kal-El" quad core. **** it! I'm going for the Gtab!
lol might as well buy the Samsung now and then sell it once the new one you like comes out. But its true, do you really want to keep waiting? Not I, I'm jumping on June 8th.
Personally I would get one now. You can play the waiting game and never get one as there is always a better one around the corner. You can of course wait but I suspect that you won’t see many better or 4 core tablets announced until CES 2012 next year.

No, if you can wait, it means.... you can wait! I don't know about the rest of you, but I've lived my life just fine without a table. It will be a cool toy to have, but I don't NEED one. Tech gadgets are always progressing, but the tablet market is currently moving at a very fast pace. Tegra 3 is supposed to be out later this year, and is supposed to be 5x the performance. That's a much more significant performance/time ratio than other more "mature" tech products. If you can wait, then there's certainly something to be said for jumping on when the curve flattens out a little. What I do will depend a lot on pricing.
i think it's worth waiting... tegra3 pre production chips allready shipped to manyfacturers, mass production starts around august. motorola and probably asus will be releasing products short after ( promising releases before back-to-school time )
this means that you can, in theory, own a quad core beast in within 3 to 4 months months...
and they are realy fast, throw your pc and your mediaplayers out of the window and start using your tablet instead
perhaps you can invest in a program like best buy's buy back program, so when something new comes out, you can trade in your old and get the new for cheap

If you pay attention to the market it doesn't look that way. I personally think we wont see anything better then whats out now until next year. Most of these company's still need to make money off the products that are currently on the market.
Take Samsung for example, think of the time and money that has been spent building and promoting their new tablets around the world. I really don't see them coming out with any new tablets at the end of the year even if they had the new teleology. they first need to make a profit.

Asus, Motorola, and Amazon (and probably others) are all rumored to have Tegra 3 tablets by the end of the year. You can't make much money off of the products you currently have on the market if they are obsoleted by new products your competitors are offering.
I'm going to revise my initial answer.
If you're asking the question "Should I wait?". You should wait.
After the iPad released last year, I started trying to imagine, what exactly I would use a tablet for. Once I was a bit settled on what I wanted to do with it, I started looking for something that would match my needs.
When the 10.1v was announced I realised it was a match and I eagerly went after it.
Maybe you should wait until you are certain that the tablet you are buying is a match for your requirements.

I run the 10.1v and love it.
Things it is:
-light
-sexy (please no 3.5mm jokes)
-brilliant batery (i charge it each night but it only gets down to 30-50% after full day of use)
-netbook replacment (people will argue this but i haven't found a netbook more fun then this, and you can put debian on it )
-casual gaming (not sure of anything on the market you cannotplay onit except porley designed games that are just tiny boxs)
Things it isn't:
-high def cinema (you can run standard def fine and it looks great but if you are obsesd with 720P wait)
-ipad (yer thats a pritty good reason )
-high end device (tegra 2 is fun and all but nexus s still out performes all tegra 2 devices so if you want the bigest and best wait for qualcomm)
In conclusion if you want a great device that doesn't need to be compared to a PC (which i hate that thats were we uave goten in tablets) then go pick one up, but if your after a device that you want to luanch thermal nucular war with wait for qualcomm.

I was really looking forward to GT10.1 but no luck.
It has Tegra 2 inside which is no good for me and has no sd slot which is also no good for me.
I do want a tablet like this but I do have a purpose in getting one - it has to replace my netbook.
Meaning I want to watch 720p mkv without re encoding, netflix, etc...
So far non of the tablets (including iPad2) can do what I want.
If I would be to take one now just to have it Asus Transformer seems like a better choice.
There is an sd slot on it, there is a great dock with batt. for it and looks like it will be/is cheaper.

As far as i know, the Xoom plays 720p mkv with Moboplayer just fine. I haven't tested this myself but i have read about it in Xoom forum.
If you want, i can test this for you, just point me to a video to test.

Unfortunately no.

Is the TF already close to being obsolete?

With the introduction of Windows 8 yesterday and announcement of a Tegra 3 device by the end of the year, are the TF's days numbered?
I had to return my TF thanks to a touch screen failure, still want to get another one but now am having doubts.
Technology is constantly upgrading and if I keep looking over the horizon, I'll never get anything, but it seriously sounds like Tegra 3 is close to coming out. Tegra 2 is actually two year old architecture afterall. I've done this before though, waiting a year for the Adam (which ended up not being too great) then another five months for the Transformer...which is actually pretty awesome.
The biggest issue I have with the TF is its weak video capabilities.
I think the Tegra 3 will solve this (this thing looks beastly, Lost Planet 2?!) with it's quad core muscle.
The end of the year is still six months away. You'll have plenty of time to enjoy your TF. It's not like it's $1000 bucks either.

See the thing is, when tegra 3 comes along, there will be another processor that obliterates it. so you just gotta take the plunge and enjoy what u have for now. or wait forever, lol
Windows 8 won't be released until next year, at the earliest.
Tegra 3 is sampling this month, meaning production runs and first consumer units probably wont hit the market until december, if that.
Obselete is a very strong word that's being bastardized.
My dual Pentium 2 setup is obsolete. My Core 2 Duo chip is not.
its hard to keep up with the newest and baddest, but i say as long you pick something that will fill YOUR needs, and gives you a good usage, then your fine.
Then , when your ready to upgrade, you look into what fits your needs at that time.
so yes, the tegra can easily be obselete soon, but is honeycomb? ASus? what about XDA development? 3.1 may not be the end for the TF..
You will never win this war...
If you wait and get a Tegra 3 device, 4-5 months later you will be reading about the Tegra 4 devices coming Fall of 2012. If you like the TF and it meets your current needs then stay with it

Personally i bought the TF for the tablet form.
I have a laptop, a netbook, and desktop at home.
for 700 you could easily find a netbook with more power ..
plus for me:
When the next tablet comes out, you can sell your TF (which is why you want to skin it, cover it, etc) and put that money towards the newest tab out there.

You guys are all right, I'm taking the plunge again.
FYI - I do have a netbook/ultraportable with a lot more power. HP Dv2z that had a dual core AMD Neo X2 and Radeon with 512mb (NOT integrated). Bought it two years ago, one of the best hardware purchases I've made. The thing runs CODMW2 and SC2 no sweat. Pretty beastly for something so small.
Sorry I posted this....I was wrong.
Group hug everyone.
Now off for the hunt to find a TF.
It doesn't really matter. Right now there are only a handful of apps that make use of Tegra 2. By the time Tegra 4 comes out, there will probably be a healthy amount of Tegra 2 apps and 4 or 5 Tegra 4 apps. You are pretty much paying a big premium to play a couple of crappy games.
ASUS promised the dock would be compatible with future tablets and that alone is a smart move. I love the TF and it does what I need it to do, hardware-wise. The software is still suffering from a lot of issues but they will disappear soon. If you buy a tech device you have to be aware that the moment you turn it on it's not the newest on the market anymore.
Welcome to the world of Technology....where things are obsolete before you even take it out of the box pretty much.
Newer are not always better. Just get what you need to meet your needs and go from there. If it fulfills them keep it.
Simple as that really.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZAAZ7iXN-o
I got mine just to play with Android programming (I am a .Net guy). For 400 bucks is worth it.
Everything is always obsolete when it gets released. Otherwise, everybody would have the same stuff fro 30 years and no company would stay in business.
weak video capabilities? I was worried about the limitations of the tegra 2 processor, however got used to transcoding my videos and it makes no sense to put a 6 or 7 gb video on a portable device. After transcoding my films they are a Max of 2 gb and normally closer to 1 gb and the quality is excellent.
Would I wait for a tegra 3 device? Nope firstly because they will probably end up being delayed so you will end up waiting months longer than you like. Plus the core capabilities will always work on the transformer - web browsing, playing music, video playback (I would always transcode my videos now to save on space), gaming, reading books and now mags with zinio. Plus you can always pop it on ebay.

err HELL NO!!. too much drama with my 101, I would be a fool to go through it all again, shame really cos it had sooo much potential.
@Kocta
Yes, a "wait-and-see" option should've been included. Unfortunately, AFAIK polls can't be changed once they're up.
Instead, think of it like this: If you're favorably inclined toward buying one, based on the announced specs at this point in time, vote Yes. If not, vote No.
too much hardware and software issues so far with my Gen8 101... maybe again in 1-2 years when they've learned their lessons. but so far I'm planning to buy a Transformer or something similiar by the end of summer
me the 80 gen 9 and the 101 gen 9
No, because they made the wrong size.
As I'm flying alot i don't need that big thing.
The 70IT was just the right size.
Why did they do that?
The 80 is 8"? This isn't much bigger than 7", is it?

In fact, just 2.2cm (=1") bigger
And they've said that they'll bring out 6 Tablet from 5" to 10".
I think these will be A50 A70 A80 A90 and the A101
Wht do you think?
IMHO the 90 should be replaced by a 40 ^^
@Lennb to be exact: 1" = 2,54cm but it's not about the numbers, it's about "how big" does it feel.
1" more in screensize doesn't translate to a 1" bigger device.
Because they changed the format from 16:9 to 4:3 we have 2cm wider but 4 cm higher device.
That is more then 35% higher.
And that 4cm is enough that it doesn't fit in a normal pant pocket ( temp while entering/leaving plane ) and generally makes the thing alot bulkier.
so the new screen format is the problem, not the size for itself
Only if they upgrade Gen8 to Honeycomb - cause then I'd have more faith in the comapny :-D
I'll stick to my newly bought gen8 101.
First of all it'd be a pain to sell it now and wait for the release in sept. Selling it after the release will just have a huger price drop.
Second it's still a budget tablet, u can get good stuff but it won't be like u suddenly get handed an ipad3 / asus transformer 2 / ...
The only things that rly interest me in this is the dualcore and the honeycomb, which both i can live without. (doubt the screen is that much better than the 101it atm)
Since the Gen9 uses the same OMAP4430 as the Pandaboard @ pandaboard.org I'll try one and see how much work it will be to replace the factory bootloader/firmware with u-boot gitorious.org/pandaboard/u-boot
There is no reason why a tabklet should take more than a few seconds to power-on to login for Linux. A few people are also working on knocking off 20 seconds or so from starting Android.
I have already been working with the Pandaboard and if Archos hasn't done too poor a job with the rest of the tablet it might be worth it.

I am seriously wondering whether Archos delivered more problems with the current firmwares (esp. the Battery-Issues) in order to make people buy Gen9 due to being less satisfied with their Gen8 Actually in my case it would be just the other way around - only if Archos manages to deliver a firmware that makes the Gen8 what it is supposed to be, I would ever consider buying any Archos-tablet again.
So there are two conditions: 1. Wait and see if the main Gen8-Firmware-Issues will be fixed 2. Wait and see if the Gen9 come up with similar issues like the USB-Host-failure on Gen8 (I had two of those!) after a few months.
If Archos doesnt come along with a real step forward on firmware soon I will downgrade to 2.1.08 and wait for an easy Custom-ROM-Solution, then watch the market a little longer and save some money for something that lives up to what it is praised for by marketing, probably not Archos again....
It's a pity, the Gen8 really looked good, too, now I havbe become really cautious and suspicious with Archos.
A resounding NO.
I love new gadgets but under no circumstances would i buy another archos tablet. Did anyone else feel robbed after they had used their gen device for a while? I know i did. From random reboots, usb and wifi issues to ridiculous firmware updates that only made things worse!!! I know that i bought a "budget tablet" but I cant help feeling that I should have paid alot less for this device than 300 euro (200 for the 101 would've been more like it and then i might've upgraded to gen 9).
Archos need to learn a lesson and this consumer intends to teach (not that anyone would listen).
Here's hoping that Bodhi linux quench's my disappointment a little.
p.s. To the people who voted yes, you're either crazy or have too much money lying around.

New Gen9 poll (more options)

I know there is a poll already, but I think there needs to be more options. And since you can't edit a poll after the fact, I am making a new poll. You can also select more than one option.
I'm very interested to know why so many Gen8 owners just aren't interested in Gen9. I think it's a good upgrade over the Gen8. Gonna sell mine, hopefully get $175 for it, and then my Gen9 will only cost about $150.
I know one of the options says "only if Archos promises Honeycomb". I know Archos says it will have Honeycomb shipped, but last time they said Gen8 would have Froyo shipped, and it didn't. If they do the same again, I don't think people will be happy.
What say you?
No i'll wait, unless they promise honeycomb (i take it that reflects gen8) as that would mean we might get the next one(s) on gen9 aswel.
No, I meant unless they actually promise and ship Gen9 with Honeycomb.
Honestly, I think Archos is done with major updates for Gen8.
I am fairly certain that all we'll get from here on out is minor bugfixes. The tablet market is heating up, and they are trying to break through. That means all of their attention is going to be on Gen9 and getting Honeycomb on it. So unless they've ported Honeycomb for the Gen8 already, I don't see us getting it (unless a dev gives it).
You don't have a "yes if they give us SDE again"
I'll only be getting one if I can dual boot it easy.
~Jeff
Will wait for reviews. Build quality is important, would be willing to pay extra for a solidly built tablet with the same specs, but I don't think thats what we are going to get.
The Archos (70 IT at least) are really solid, mine as fallen from a head height, and, yes, the case is broken, but the screen isn't and everything work as out of the box, do the same with an ipad, the screen is dead.

I think I am one of the few people who think that the Gen8 was well constructed. My A70 has always been solid, and I was very surprised at that.
Anyway, apparently the Gen9 has a uni-body frame (at least I remember reading that somewhere) which should lend to greater stability than ever before. I'm sure Charbax will get his hands on one soon, and let us know his impressions of the device.

Actually liked the gen 8 A101 for what it was an "entry level device". Was light and thin, very convenient and not a hassle to transport around. And the investment was appropriate for where the technology was. After seeing the the Samsung offerings I wish archos would add a little eye candy along with great specs.
They're shipping with Honeycomb. (since 3.2 is around the corner, we most likely get 3.1 then promised for 3.2)
All demos run HC. Best of all, Google Approved Market.
(This was a deal break for some when they ship Gen8 with no Market. You need to sideload + do the app fix to show all apps)
I believe Gen8 was right on the price/function ratio. (~1:1)
I paid $250 for A70 vs $699 for Sammy Tab.
This time Gen9 is well exceeded this ratio. (~1:2)
$279 for 1.5Ghz Dual core. 3G for $50 more. 16GB + microSD. HDMI. Full USB.
vs.
$629 ipad 2 3G (Got this for Bday... consider selling it once Gen9 available)
1 GHz Dual Core. 16GB no microSD. HDMI(+$79 for stupid dongle). no USB.
The biggest problem i had with Gen8 was the memory being so low (only ~256MB)
From the Demos, i can tell it's as fast as the Asus Transformer (which has 1GB ram). So I'm sure this will have at least 512MB (same as iPhone 4 or iPad 2)

Seriously, if Archos puts less than 1GB of RAM of these tablets, i'm gonna pull my hair out. There just isn't any reason to put 512MB in it. The cost difference can't be that much, after all, it is DDR2.
I just don't see why Archos would go for the minimum (I think Honeycomb requires min 512MB), when it is so clear that the amount of memory is absolutely crucial to a tablet's performance and success.
I would be very surprised and disappointed if they did that. I can forgive anything else (no back camera, no customized Flash, even cheap plastic materials), but I can't forgive them hamstringing the Gen9 with less than 1GB of memory.

They already confirmed the hardware specs^^
They have 1 gb ram
Will these be able to play high profile 4.1 mkv since it isn't a Tegra2. If so I will buy this asap, with a dual core 1.5ghz it should be able to
3.1 not 4.1. And you can't buy them asap; they're not on sale until the end of September.

OK, I thought it was just an unconfirmed "leak" that showed the specs. Well, good. I am looking forward to getting my hands on Gen9 then.
The fact that android needs at least 512meg of RAM to run is sickening. I can run a full blown Linux OS with 128meg.

In my best old people voice:
"I remember years past when a man could get by with just a shade over 64 Mega bites of memory and a commodore 16. Kids today...with their facebooks and the twitters. I had to hand deliver messages ya little punk!"
As some previous posters had also noted, only if Archos manages to deliver a firmware that makes the Gen8 what it is supposed to be, would I ever consider buying any Archos-tablet again.
Until such time, NO WAY!

Yeah, but what's the point of that. If you're gonna buy a new Gen9, what does it matter what happens to the Gen8? It's not like Archos promised Gingerbread for the Gen8 and then pulled the rug out from under us.
In anycase, We'll definitely get Gingerbread for Gen9. And I think Googs is pushing manufacturers to provide at least 18 months of updates for Android devices. I know Archos isn't part of that consortium, but I think that bodes well for upgrades.

Recommendations are requirements are not the same, as you know. The emulator only uses about 80 megs for Honeycomb. I think it's more the third party apps that cause the increase than the OS itself.
The point is that the Gen 8 tabs were riddled with problems: broken USB, wifi issues, battery charging issues, blue tooth and tethering problems, etc.
They may be able to deliver a gen 9 tab with Honeycomb which might likely include a boat load of problems. Also it has been noted that Archos still must get Google certification for its Gen 9 tabs to have access to Google Market, if the wait for certification is anything like for Gen 8, then Gen 9's will never get Google certified

Is Asus Transformer Still a Good buy

Well guys i am planning to buy a Tablet with a 7" or 10" Display i am hung up on 3-4 Options
1) HP Touchpad
2) Asus Transformer
3) BlackBerry Playbook
4) Nook colour Or a Kindle Fire
My budget is not more than 400$ not a single penny more. Or should i just wait for the new release of the Asus Tablet which cost around 249$
Well, the nook and playbook aren't 10' , and the new transformer is also 7' so there's that. I think the Transformer and Playbook have a lot of Dev support, but I don't know to what extent for the Playbook. Take a look in their forum, see what kinds of Roms they have. I bet the Playbook will have CM9 before we do, but not by much. I love my Tranny, and I think you will too. I bought my 32 gb for 350, so shop around and get the best deal and then...buy the dock.
Sent from a KRAKD out Tranny
Well i am betting on MeMo to come out . And there is no support for playbook at XDA

for me, the decision was to wait for MeMo or get the transformer now. I got a transformer for a few reasons:
1. I would have been happy with a 7" screen, but I'm happier with a 10".
2. The MeMo will not have a keyboard dock (probably not at least).
3. Since the tegra2 devices have been on the market much longer than the tegra3 devices, the software and manufacturing are more mature and I don't want to be a beta tester for a new device.

Just got me a 101 with 32gb for $350 at Ebay, mint condition. The tab is perfect, all features work including a very fast gps lock. With Android 3.2 you're just one step to the Ice Cream Sandwich. I recommend the 101, everything works and the price just right. You will be pleased!
I wouldn't get any of the products you have listed. I would save up a bit longer and get the Prime (if you really need one soon) or wait until Q2 and pickup the TF701 (the 1920x1080 res one).
All of the products you listed (besides the Kindle / Nook) are at the EOL or completely done (Touchpad).
The Nook/Kindle are just under powered imo.
Don't get me wrong, all of the ones I've played with are nice devices. Just if I am spending a decent amount of money on something, I want it to be new and good for a while after I purchase it, not something that is already outdated.

So what can you say about the transformer is it outdated or still a good buy
Sent from my GT-S5670 using xda premium
You’re somewhat late buying a 101 for $400.
I was waiting for the Prime, until Black Friday came along. Brand new, you bet the 101 at $250 knocks it out of the ballpark. At $400 and with what’s looming, I’d wait.

Products become outdated only when it's no longer supported by the maker or new software is no longer available. The Transformer is not outdated, in fact over 99% of the apps out there will run on it, and Asus is about to provide an ICS update that will enhance its functionality. For your targeted budget I would consider the Transformer as the best buy among those in your list.
The other consideration is your own personal usage, what kind of programs are planning to run on your tablet? Most users want something with reader functions to read books, media entertainment like music and movies, children educational programs, internet browsing, video and audio chatting, newspapers and magazines, personal data managment like bills, records, checkbooks. The Transformer will do all these and more for you.
yes the tablet is a beast.
got mine for 270 on ebay mint condition and im loving it
rooted with custom rom. sucks i cant get a keyboard cheap
im a college student a keyboard is a must buy for me. for now i cant really buy anything since school is sucking up all my money
anyway you should buy it although the development for it is really slow. we still waiting for ICS( FFS Asus hurry the fudge up)
I think the Asus Transformer is still very much a relevant tablet. I just got mine from Tiger Direct for $299 on a Valentine's Special.
Right now the development and spec are growing exponentially and you will find yourself waiting just a little bit longer for the next version and never buy anything.
The TF101 is a very capable tablet that wi compatible with 99%+ of what is in the market right now. It is also one of the first tablets slated to receive ICS (March-2012).
My only thought here is that for $400 retail is a bit stiff knowing the prime is about $100 more. Shop around so that you don't pay full retail price. If you get a good deal, you will end up with a table that will satisfy your needs very well, and will probably cover your wants for a while too.
Get it and enjoy it!
I bought mine a few weeks ago. I did a ton of research on what's around at the moment and tossed around the idea of 7 inch vs 10 inch, looked into cost, read a ton of reviews. I couldn't justify anything as being a better deal than the Transformer w/ dock.
A few weeks later and I'm more than happy with my choice. It's a wonderful device.

But keep in mind it was slated to receive ICS in December-2011, then in January, then in February and now they say March. I wouldn't buy Transformer now unless it dropped in price. Better go for sth without Tegra, so you can watch any movie you want on the tablet. Avoid Blackberry too and all 1024x600 resolution tablets.
I bought my new 32GB TF101 last week when Best Buy had it on sale for $399 and I couldn't be happier. I wasn't going to take the chance on a Prime for $100 more (when you can actually find someone who has it in stock) with all of the reported issues. Especially in my case where I was trying to replace my Acer A500 that had really poor wifi signal strength so I didn't want to go from one bad one to another.
Sure the Prime is much better on paper, but with the list of issues that it has I am not so sure it is a great buy right now. If it was readily in stock it might be worth at least a chance because you could try exchanging it a couple times, but IMO it certainly isn't worth it when your only other option is to RMA it.

*lol* I looked for one. It seemed a few weeks ago there wasn't *any* in existance at any price. Right now I'm happy with the one I have - might upgrade next year, to this years model.
I got the 16 gig and tossed a 16 gig SD card I had lying around.
Well thanks for your input guys all I want from my tablet is Entertainment like games and movies nothing else. I have seen people saying that this tablet is a bit heavy and you cant carry it wherever you go so what's your say on this. And the most important factor is I live In india and the only store that ships it is Amazon I can't find any other option to buy from

I've had my hands on a Transformer for a while now and I must say it's great.
If your question was : Will I enjoy using a TF101?
I'd say : Definitely!
Will there be some other sexy tablet released in the near future that you'll want to buy ?
Most likely! but keep in mind that this will always be the case... There's always something new and exciting to wait for.
The Android is always greener on the other side of my time machine...
