Nexus Prime dues end of OCTOBER - Vibrant General

Nexus Prime Support Page up and in shambles at Samsung
As I noted yesterday when we got word of a code hidden at Samsung’s mobile webspace, the Nexus line is one that, when you get any new information on it at ALL, you’ve gotta report it. You NEED to report it because when it comes to Android, there’s basically nothing more exciting for those who love purity than a Google-certified vanilla flavoring of a version of Android OS, and in this case, it means the launching of the next big platform, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. What we’ve got today is a rather preliminary looking support page for the device aka GT-I9250, this being otherwise known as the Nexus Prime.
This device is being shown here in a broken-down placeholder of a page which, when it comes down to it, doesn’t show us much of anything. On the other hand, there is a new set of supposed factoids this morning courtesy of a tipster speaking with GSM Arena. Take the following with a grain of salt, of course, but note that these are all possibilities:
“For one, our tipster says that the final name of the next Google flagship is Samsung Galaxy Nexus rather than Nexus Prime. It will have a 4.65″ screen of HD resolution – not 4.5″ WVGA. … screen is curved just like the Nexus S screen … device itself will be very thin – 8.8mm – and have a metal chassis … the launch date – at the end of October (right on the Ice Cream Sandwich schedule)” – tipster
Note again that for basically any other device we wouldn’t be as apt to publish a third-hand unnamed source like this, but these specs ring enough bells that they’re certainly inside the realm of reality. Keep your ears open and let’s get this device out of the closet sooner than later!
ALSO as a bonus, here’s our favorite well-played comment on the matter thus far:
“Galaxy Nexus is like naming your kid Ricky Bobby. Galaxy Prime would make more sense and sounds a lot better.” – Kenshiro
This man speaks truth!

Better Save Money or Contract for this instead of getting SGS II aka Hercules

Idk about that...last night there was the XML leak saying its actually just the same resolution as the Vibrant is currently, but with a 4.65 screen. I have not seen anything today saying it will have an HD resolution.

I talked to a Tmobile cc rep and she told me that the galaxy S2 is due early next month, she told me low key because they don't have prices yet

Google and Samsung should find a way to PUMP up Pixels in this jumbo screen otherwise they should jump back to IPS display to satisfy custumer . Samsung should move to new laser-based method, Laser Induced Thermal Imaging (LITI) from the currently-used shadow-mask method (FMM) to pump up the pixel density.

Point well taken--best to wait an extra month to get 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Nexus Prime/Nexus Galaxy then to get 2.3 Gingerbread Galaxy S2. Also you will get updates directly from Google instead of waiting for TMO/Samsung (some say its TMO fault the Vibrant hasn't received Gingerbread, others say Sammy, depends whom you ask).

I have a terrible feeling this phone will be Verizon exclusive.... Ready to ditch my vibrant.

I was ready to ditch my vibrant to until I tried miui, its like a new phone and don't think I can ever go back to stock. You should give it a shot unless you already have.

You're right. Even though battery life on MIUI is nowhere compared to 2.2 but I also find my way back to MIUI .

When you say that battery life is nowhere compared to 2.2, on average how many hours are we talking in a normal day?
I use Toxic 8 and juice defender to limit the amount of data when my screen is off, and I'm getting around 20 or so hours. It's usually around 14-16 when I'm using it a little more during the day, but I don't do that as much anymore.
I've been wanting to try Miui for awhile now, but both the GPS and battery life have been talked to death on these boards. Just curious what your personal experiences have been since using it?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Damn. Choices choices choices. I hate it, I can't make my mind up.
Nexus, Note, GS2! Damn decisions.

Lol, ill simplify this for you...
Note, not coming to USA anytime soon, and when it does it wont be on tmo bands.
Gs2, the Hercules more than likely will have the same snapdrogon that's in the sensation. While nice, IMHO is not as good as the exynos in original sgs 2, and the omap 4 that will be in the prime. Also, because of this seems to me to be more of a lateral move from vibrant than a forward one.
Nexus, is the way to go. It will be stock android so waiting for updates wont happen again, also it will have top hardware and more than likely an HD screen which will look amazing.
Just wait for the nexus unless you absolutely need a phone now. It will be well worth the wait.

[Q] Which new phone are you getting this year?

I think if the Samsung Galaxy S 2 comes out for Verizon, I'll get that one. But if not, I think I'm getting the Samsung Charge, or Iphone 5. What phone are you most excited about?

None. I'm stuck on the two year contract. I don't know how you are not?
SGSII definitely. I'm avaliable for an upgrade anytime til my contract ends November.

Nothing from Samsung, that's for sure.
I actually really like this phone once its de-bloated and de-crapified. Actually its probably my favorite phone I've ever had. (that includes numerous smart phones and platforms going back to the nokia 3650 on symbian os). Im going to stick around with it until there's something amazing released.

do you know if its coming to verizon?
I'll get the SGSII, IF and only if it doesn't have anything locking it down and preventing custom ROMs/Kernels. Otherwise, I'll find something else.

I just jumped ship from the Fascinate to the Thunderbolt a few days ago. Rooted and have been experimenting.
After getting a sense of the Thunderbolt and putting it side by side with the Fascinate, its not as dominant as I would have expected. The Fascinate's SAMOLED screen is just substantially better than the Thunderbolt's S-LCD. Its not even close really. Also, the latest gen Snapdragon + Adreno 205....doesn't seem as snappy as the Fascinate SoC. Fascinate definitely has better graphics. Very subtle stutters on the Thunderbolt after testing a few ROMs and Kernels. Also, its certainly a matter of opinion, but the Thunderbolt is just a tad too big compared with the Fascinate. They have the power button on top like an iPhone, and the way I would naturally grip the phone puts the power button barely out of reach of my index finger. I have to do a very small phone adjust in my hand to allow my index finger to get on top of the power button, but the Fascinate's 4 inch screen is about as large as I would imagine it could get for it to require no movement of the phone in the palm while operating it, which is preferable I think.
On the other hand - Verizon's LTE network is stupid fast. NYC with its saturated 3G networks -- the LTE network is like coming up for air after nearly drowning. Its rock solid everywhere I've been, almost like ubiquitous WiFi. When you really think about it, even the best Dual-Core Cortex A9 phones on ATT can't really touch a Cortex A8 experience on WiFi. The network makes an enormous difference and that can't be stressed enough.
The Thunderbolt is sexier than the Fascinate with its screen off. I don't really care about the kickstand, but the feel and heft is a welcome change from the Fascinate. Although not a graphics beast, it is by no means a slouch. The UI is very snappy, and I'll be very curious once CM7/AOSP gets released.
Thats the final thing about the Thunderbolt that I think is worth mentioning. The Thunderbolt forum is buzzing. Lots of devs, people are gearing up for CM7 nightlies/crackflashing. Not to say this forum wasn't Fantastic, but the Thunderbolt, and HTC in general, seem to have a slightly more robust community. I'm not at all upset with my decision to switch, but the Fascinate is by NO MEANS old hardware right now, in fact using the Thunderbolt makes me appreciate how good Samsung was on the hardware side.

I agree, and with an unlocked bootloader and a whole SLEW of awesome devs that I know are gonna jump on this beast of a phone and with Sammy leaking source code and updates like EB01/EC01 for free beta testing, we don't need official OTA updates. I WILL BE GETTING THE GALAXY S 2!

That is a great question. I bought a used Fascinate to hold me over, and to learn the Android system. I am hoping that later in the year I can get something with dual core and LTE. But I also don't want to give up battery life. So this may not be possible.
I like Android, but have a bad opinion of Samsung compared to my previous multiple HTC WinMo devices.
So I want:
For the OS: Android, likely not Microsoft, never Apple.
Manufacturer: HTC, maybe Moto, Samsung is low on the list.
Carrier: Verizon...........period.. What I need it for, other choices fail.
Dual core would be nice, but not at the expensive of a lot of battery life.
I want LTE. Not badly, but there is not much reason to throw away a 2 year contract and not get it.
The Thunderbolt is almost it, and may BE it, for me. Maybe I really don't want dual core just yet anyway. The new SGS II is probably nice, but I'm sure I would be returning in to Verizon as it would have the same hardware weaknesses that I see in the Fascinate.
So I'm waiting it out for now to see what else comes along. Until I smash this P.O.S. Fascinate against the ground and I'm forced to decide.
It's going to be really tough for me to buy another Samsung phone. The internal guts of the Fascinate are awesome (which is why I bought it), but the lack of support and poorly written code is a real let-down. I'm definitely going to explore other phone manufacturers and carriers to see how things compare. If another network suits my daily needs, I'll definitely switch... possibly to T-Mobile given their upcoming line-up of phones. I'm not excited about the possible AT&T merger, but I definitely won't be locking myself into any contracts in the near future. Android progresses way too quickly to get locked into anything longer than 1 year - and those contracts are going away.
As much as most would hate to hear it, if the iPhone had Google Navigation, a universal micro-USB port and maybe removable internal storage + battery... I would consider it. I doubt those things would ever happen, so no iPhone for me. An MIUI-compatible Android would be much better anyways.
Galaxy S2. Samsung is improving. I mean, GB is rolling out to the i9000 before any other phone. Their hardware is superior. With the Galaxy S2, it's EXT4. AND, the bootloader is gonna be open. It seems that they ARE listening to the consumers. Though I'm angry that we still don't have 2.2, I blame Verizon for that more than Samsung.

Evo3d or galaxy s2

I like both phone, both has crazy specs, I have the evo now and love it. What I love about the evo is that there is so many roms to choose from. My main concern is which phone is easier to develop for and do you think Samsung development community would be as big as HTC development community. Not to mention that I love the cm roms and there roms is still in experimental stage for Samsung. I really answering my own question for the evo3d but that screen on the galaxy s2 is calling me.

I sold my EVO and bought an Epic back in December... big mistake for someone that likes to dev and tweak his phone. The Epic hardware is awesome, but the dev support is very lacking. Yeah, I could overclock my Epic and score 2400+ on Quadrant and it took great HD Video compared to the EVO. The screen was also beautiful. I traded the Epic for an EVO because I missed being able to dev. If you're the type of person that always wants to be on the cutting edge with the newest version of Android, then stay with what the DEVs are using (probably EVO3D). If you're someone that runs the same ROM for months at a time (i.e. not a flashaholic) then the Samsung S II may be best for you. It depends on what you're looking for and what you're looking to do with your phone.

Yup Evo 3D, even tho it might have lock bootloader like the thunderbolt, it will have more support from developers, and good ones too, virus is coming alone and myns wants too, I believe mik is coming and of course others

I wonder how long it will take them to crack the bootloader if it is indeed locked. I hope not too long. But its what ever. After running Virus' Kindom Port, ill be fine with stock un-rooted for a lil while
My only concern is developing for the EVO 3D as they have some new files that are going to be or may be difficult to work on. Only time will tell. I'm going to the EVO 3D because I love Sense and I can tell you right now the galaxy wont have that.
My favorite roms are myns for sense and cm7 for latest android roms. So I guess ill stay with HTC

I checked out both phones at Google IO. The galaxy S2 was so thin and the screen was amazing. Both phones were super snappy.
The only turnoffs for me on the galaxy s2 was the plasticky cover and the weight. Anyone who's owned a Samsung phone knows what i'm talking about with the plasticky feeling phones. But the weight of the S2 blew me away. I can't remember a lighter smartphone. It felt like a toy. It was basically "too light." I'm sure for many, that phrase doesn't even make sense, but for me, I like phones that feel solid and have some substance to them. For some, when they throw this phone in their pocket, they won't even know its there.
I have to hand it to Samsung though. The S2 is an impressive engineering accomplishment. Its the highest performance phone I've seen announced, and its so damn thin and light.
I'm personally a fan of sense, or at least having the option of sense, and I doubt that would ever fully translate to a Samsung product no matter what developers are working on it.
I really love the slab form of the GSII, if they release a HTC slab phone (like the Sensation) on Sprint, that would really be the phone I'd want. Evo 2?
HTC has better radios and gps, Samsung sucks!
the s2 does seem intriguing...also i hate that instead of hdmi out, the use usb and then give you a converter cable w/ an additional power source on it. plus, for some unknown reason, it seems we could be waiting a while before it actually hits the market in the states for some reason eventhough it is already in europe (gsm version). also, i hopped on to the evo 3d thread a while ago and the dev's were introducing themselves...there were LOADS of great dev's coming on board. With the specs and dev's on board, the 3d will have some spectacular features!
I am intrigued by the GS2 and the new version of Touchwiz... I HATE HATE HATE touchwiz, but the new version looks ok so far.
One thing that will keep me from considering the GS2 is if it has a physical keyboard. I don't know why Sprint has to be the one that gets that...
I'm going with the EVO 3D. The specs look awesome.

I agree with you on that one. I think its more about being sure you get the right phone to have for the next 22 months. It's like getting married, you don't wanna make the wrong choice cause its gonna be a while. My biggest concern is data reception. My friend got a nexus s and couldn't connect to 4g when I had 2 bars of 4g standing right next to him. Also, all of the samoled screens I've seen have a color tint to them so I don't know if samoled+ will be any different.
I'm wondering about the tinted screen myself. I hadn't heard about the 4g issue. I always research my future phones but sometimes you just don't know about it till you get it.

Well I've had one samsung phone, and it was beast, it was the 'smart phone' of its day before smart phones as we know rule the playground. Never had a bad experience, and this one has the hardware to match the software; as I recall [could be wrong] samsung wasn't going to lock the bootloader so it should be rooted, potentialy quickly, and as that phone has the hardware, I believe it'll have more support than the notorious Epic. Also have a samsung 32" LED TV, amazing quality, and I think this phone is worth picking up, and if you don't like it, return it within the 30 days.

As much as I have always loved htc, the s2 just seems to be a better phone. In the side by side videos I've seen it just seems smoother than the 3d. It definitely has the hardware, and from what I've heard the new touchwiz is supposed to be pretty good. I'm waiting go see if the whole subpixel thing actually improves the quality up to qhd like they claim. I'm also curious if sprint is going to add a hardware keyboard like they did with the galaxy s/epic. A no gimmick beast of a phone is definitely something I can deal with until the next upgrade comes up. Worst case scenario, if I go past the 30 days and decide I want the 3d, I'll just order a 3d when the wife isn't lookin and tell her I bought it cheap off a coworker.

It's all about how you close the deal. My wife has a crap hero (no offense to hero owners, hers just sucks). So I told her I would go through asurion for a new evo since mine has some water damage, then I would let her have it after I upgrade to the 3d or galaxy s2. That way she could have a brand new evo until her upgrade comes in November. Not only is she bugging me to upgrade, but she thinks I'm a genius. Marriage, at times, is all about negotiation. As far as the hardware keyboard, I miss my touch pro 2 keyboard. I don't mind the thickness of the phone, and it made texting a bit easier sometimes. Also, remapping keys for shortcuts was a bonus too.

exact thought i had, although they cannot be that stupid. according to leaked rumors & ****, Sprint WILL have another keyboarded phone, but supposedly it wont be the "Samsung Within" aka the SGS2
I am also waiting to see what else comes out this month.I'm not really interested in the 3d but am keeping my eye on the rumored within

Those were GSM phones and won't help any type of development for any phone coming to sprint. Sorry.

The s2 is supposed to be out at the end of the month. I'm kind of surprised there haven't been any leaked pictures of the sprint branded s2 (within). They seem to be keeping a pretty tight lid on it so far.
I like my whites to be... Well... White.
Not yellow.
So no, I'm sticking with my Evo for a bit until something comes along that interests me. I'm more curious about the Evo 4G+ I've been hearing about.

Its the Evo 3D, without the 3D; same battery, has the evo's 8MP camera, Evo 3D hardware and software.

Looking for advice for my next phone

It seems that Cyanogenmod will not be bringing their next generation (ICS) to the Vibrant. While I really like the Vibrant, perhaps it is time to think about moving on.
Are there any recommendations for where I should be looking. Here would be my considerations:
- I like the hardware features (screen size and resolution and 16GB memory)
- I want the phone to have full Cyanogenmod support
- Cyanogenmod support should include a good gps and battery life (both of which are shortcomings for the Vibrant)
- I need to stick with TMobile
- And, I don't want the phone to cost an arm and a leg
Any thoughts, ideas, advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Nexus. Nothing else needs to be said. But if it does not come to to tmobile, I would lean towards HTC, they seem to be able to at least update phones.

I agree. Nexus should be #1 on your list if you want support and like the Vibrant. The HTC Amaze just came out on T-Mobile and has impressive hardware specs and is on the list from HTC to get the ICS update. It also has a 8MP camera with instant picture taking like the Nexus. I would imagine that Cyanogenmod will put out a mod for it. Though any new phones will need some time to see if CM will support it.
The Galaxy Nexus is a pentaband phone, so even if T-Mobile doesn't get it, it'll still run on their network. I normally tell people to get the phone that they like the best. Not everyone is an uber android geek. I told a buddy of mine to get the Droid Charge, he loves the thing. If he waited for the Galaxy Nexus, he'd be disappointed. It's personal preference.
It sounds like you like to tinker. People that like to tinker need a Nexus device because they'll always be the ones with the most support and the smoothest Android experience. I love my Vibrant, it was my first Android device. I'll probably always hold onto it as a backup phone with Stock Froyo + WiFi Calling, but in the future I'll most likely stick to Nexus devices.
Decide what you care about the most and less about hardware/appearance. If you want a custom experience more than what a manufacturer's android experience is, then go for a Nexus with optimized hardware. There are a lot of really nice, very cool phones out there but in terms of longevity of future up to date use, Nexus wins 10 times out of 10.
Also, I wouldn't buy a device based on the promise of updates. Carriers may intend to update a device, but several things can hinder that intention. In all reality, if an upgrade to ICS doesn't come until next August, well, what's the point? Remember, for a long time it looked like Samsung assumed that T-Mobile would want the Vibrant updated, and it didn't happen. There have several devices through the years that were suppose to be updated and never were. Always buy a phone for what it is, not what a carrier says it should be.
Regarding Galaxy Nexus being penta band, doesn't it mean only GSM is supported in 5 bands and not 3G? Why would Samsung build AWS band in a world phone for couple of carriers.
tmobil sgs2
What do you think of the T-Mobile sgs2? Will it get ice or will it end up being forgotten like the vibrant? Seems to me the T-Mobile sgs2 is more powerful than the nexus hardware wise
Sent from my T959 using xda premium
Higher specs are irrelevant. I'm sure it needs them to push TouchWiz. There is one device ICS is optimized for, and that's the Galaxy Nexus.
1) It's not Samsung that will abandon the SGS, it's T-Mobile
2) If you chase spec sheets you'll be replacing devices every 3-6 months.
Also, manufacturers are going to want to want their frameworks on top of ICS. There's no reference point for how ICS will look or run with TouchWiz, Sense or Motoblur on top of it. You have to go with what you know, not what you think you can assume.

Your advice is based on a "think" without any leak information of a virtual phone
nexus or tmobil sgs2! stay away from amaze
iPhone 5 will be my next device. too tempted by androids openness to play around with all the roms out there. iPhone will take that choice away and simplify things. also would play nicer with my Mac. my MacBook hates the vibrant it seems.

Samsung GALAXY S II reaches 20 Million in global sales

http://global.samsungtomorrow.com/?p=11313
That is a phenomenal amount of sales, and got me thinking out of all those people who purchased this phone only a very small percentage in comparasion have discovered XDA and were exposed to some of the super ROM's/Kernels/Mods/Tweaks/Themes,etc that are available.
Unfortunately this has also brought with it a serious amount of noobs who ask the same questions day in, day out without searching the forum.
[Apologies if this link has been posted already i didn't see it on here]

i can put any bet that when the s3 is out it will be more than double that amount mate. but i am seriously thinking of sticking with my s2 till the new nexus comes out..and for only the updates alone....as codeworkx said next phone shall be nexus as updates are instant and code straight away hence why you would get nothing but the best straight away regarding firmware that is. and the s2 is doing more than it should be for me and is quite good enough..and with ICS just around the corner still got alot of life in it for me...So i shall watch the coming months with quite a bit of interest
It's gonna take a lot for me to jump ship from this amazing phone but by all accounts it will most likely be Sammy again with the Galaxy S3 if various rumours about the specs are to be believed, i wasn't tempted by the Nexus i believe they failed miserably by having not having anything for a micro SD card and only a 5MP camera, again though if Samsung are gonna charge €600+ for the GS3 that is out of most peoples reach unless they sign up to a long contract and get it on bill pay which is a big no no for me (always buy outright) so it depends on the price too.

true. but more than likely i will be going for the s3. nexus seems to far ahead for me still...mind you though like i said s2 still for me has another year max life in it so might just be sticking with it till i see reviews and see how the phone fairs here to be honest..but if the rumours are true what they say about the s3 it will be very hard to see any other phone beating that
Yeah i do believe the Galaxy S3 will be the absolute don daddy of them all as regards smartphones
Also I'm sick of these iPhone wankers constantly saying they have the best phone ever made, when challenged and presented with the actual facts they go all defensive and end up making a fool of themselves, maybe when the Galaxy S3 is released they might finally shut up (although many are so brainwashed i doubt it)

No way - the new iPhone 4s(Subsection 2, Clause a, Parts iv-viii) will be out by then. It has slightly more rounded corners, is a slightly different shade of black (called Jacobean Stained Ebony), has a digital assistant that compliments your hair and asks if you have lost weight, and it comes with an app that releases onion essence whenever 'Steve Jobs' is mentioned so that the user is able to produce on-demand salty tears of weepage for the saintly plagiariser.

The nexus, ics and early firmware upgrades are overrated. What does ics do that gingerbread can't? I've already got 35gb of data on my phone so the nexus with its fixed16gb is useless.

not denying that mate Nexus compare to the s2 no contest at all in my eyes. the only thing going for it is the first updates that it gets when a new firmware upgrade gets released and that it is easier to port to that phone and on the plus side that it is pure google...for me that is good enough reason as it is

100% true but I don't think I will upgrade to ics even when it becomes official. My setup is perfect for me as is on Checkrom. Personally, I don't like pure Google. I'm already sick of all the custom roms coming out that replicate it. I'm sick of the blue and purple look.

I would agree with you if the nexus line hardware wise was in same class as galaxy one. Only nexus one was identical to desire by HTC, after that both nexus iterations were left wanting with their sgs1 and sgs2 counterparts. Which leads me to conclusion that next nexus will be hardware inferior to sgs3 despite 6 months difference, in which case aosp be damned...
The beauty of this phone is that, no matter how many people own it, with institutions like xda and the development scene of Android you still have the ability to have phone that is unique and set it apart from other SGS2 users. I do hope that more people will keep discovering xda and the AOSP community so that it can keep growing and improving.

I have the Bets phone in the World... And ICS Coming SOON ... IPHONE IS WELL BEATEN
Waiting for the NEXT Nexus too...
I too am waiting for the Next NEXUS, totally disappointed with the current Nexus being on Verizon with very little in the bleeding edge of technology - I have a Nexus One and that phone was rock solid and loved the super quick updates and the pure Google Experience. While I love my current Galaxy S2, Samsung insists on crapping it phone up with TouchWiz - so glad that I bought this phone unlocked and been running custom Roms ever since and haven't looked back - Come On Google, Do the Right Thing and bring back the Nexus Spirit that we come to grow and LOVE!!!
