Transcribing audio recording from Note with Dragon Naturally Speaking - success! - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

I was simply blown away by the audio quality of the recorded voice using Hi-Q Mp3 Recorder on my N7000. Dragon Naturally Speaking (v11.5 on the pc) did not make a single mistake during my one minute test. It should be noted that I initially trained DNS for roughly 4-5 hours when I started using it a few months ago.
Simply incredible and incredibly simple:
- dictate into the GNote from a distance of roughly 10 inches using Hi-Q Mp3 rec.
- share recording via Dropbox
- open DNS on pc and point it to the recording file for (almost) instant transcription.
I wonder if noise cancellation works with this recording program.

Very nice idea! Thinking outside the box there...

That sounds really interesting. Unfortunately I do not succeed in transcribing a mp3-sound file recorded via hi q mp 3. Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12 Premium refuses to do so with the remark, that an mono-audio device at 16 bits is required. Since hi q mp3 only supports at least 32 bits, I cannot transcribe. Can you help?
Many, many thanks in advance

I use ASR app for voice recording.

Thank you for let us knowing this!
Very interesting and good to know because of owning both apps/software!

dont understand crappy audio

I dont understand it.. samsung sells video cameras ... if they sold one with the crapy audio of our phone no one would buy it and they wouldnt sell any.
So they know how to record acceptable audio.. Why cannot they tweek the audio settings when you start camera to record acceptable audio (assuming they need to be different than for a phone) and change back when exiting/using phone?
What are you comparing the audio recording to. I've seen people compare it to other phones online, and many reckoned it was quite good..
Also, you do realise that video cameras have a lot more space to work with right? The quality of todays smartphones video/audio/photos is magic considering the limited space available for sensors.

It's way too sensitive... I recorded a concert (and a drive in teh car) and the audio was crap. Distorted in the car, unbearable in concert (way distorted/nosiy... literally couldn't hear the actual music).
Saw other videos with phones and they were MUCH better (audio wise). And no, it wasn't an extremely loud concert.
I think the audio is really good for a phone this size. Are you comparing it to a bose system or what? Lol

I had the same problem with Omnia HD. The sound of videos was so poor too. It was resolved by firmware update, where the audio codec was updated.
Anyone knows if exists any firmware with an acceptable sound quality of recorded videos on i9000??

Playback is great, it is the recording that is a bit crazy, the mic is super sensitive.. hopefully they can adjust this in a firmware.
True i was in rally few days ago and recorded some videos from there , video quality was awesome but sound was terrible. Too sensitive mic!
Impressed by 720p capture, very disappointed with the audio.
Case in point: Recording as of today: youtube.com/watch?v=oQPov5mUTm8
not loud inside at all, just some general background noise.
Using latest official firmware from Samsung JG4 (Optus Aus)
It has one mic, designed for minimising out ambient noise during a phone call, you can't really expect it to be good at recording a concert.
Bs my kids 5800 an my wives n 85 and other Nokia phones all recorded acceptable audio.

OP, your meaning of "audio" should be more carefully explained.
DO you mean:
1) Audio playback?
or
2) Audio recording?
My guess is #2. Yes, the microphone is quite sensitive. There were tons of people using the Samsung Omnia ( the prior generation android smartphone) who complained about the microphone NOT being sensitive enough. So Samsung decided to make the mic more sensitive.

microphone quality

What is the quality of the built in microphone and using it with google voice to text? The reason I am asking is that I currently have an acer A500 and the voice to text does not work very well.
Certain easy words or phrases it picks up fine, but others it just mangles bad no matter how clearly you try to speak.
How does the voice to text work for you?

did you try to record and listen to your voice? on TF it's awful, incomprehensive. it's sabotage!
Put a video on Youtube to show the result
I've never tried google voice-to-text. However, google voice search works pretty well on the TF101. While the quality of the microphone is relevant to voice recognition results, a perfectly good microphone could yield crap for voice recognition because of the voice recognition software that's processing it. The microphone on the TF101 is good enough for voice - whether that yields good voice recognition is another story.
Bye.

Just now, on google search I tried 4 sentences with integrated microphone and the same four with headset microphone :
integrated microphone recognizes one word or two
Headset microphone recognizes every single word.
try to record yourself with headset and without. You'll see the difference.
just purchased the TF a few days ago. And jeeeeeeeeez this internal mic is awful.... it makes recording any video or type of audio pointless. I'm not sure how Asus could put such a crap mic into a 500$ unit..

You're right it's a big crap! shame on ASUS. but look how few people are interested about that.
but look, not only recording is awful. People don't understand you on Skype or Gtalk.
as I mentioned it before, a good microphone wouldn't raise Transformer's price significantly.
So I repeat : SHAME ON ASUS!
It seriously is a ****ty mic, but fortunately, I don't need it.. yet.
+1
I agree wholeheartedly. The mic sucks on TF101. I used my tab to video my rc helicopter flight in the living room and either got hardly any audio or audio with a high pitched whine. I paid $499 for this puppy. My $100 dollar camera does a better job. Heck the mic on my $79 dollar mp3 player works better.
I guess for short youtube or facebook video's I need to pick up a real video camera.
Yay! Another electronic gadget coming my way.
I find it works best if you're very close to the mic, like sharing the same pillow.
A decent phone is probably better, both for rear facing camera and mic.

There is a way to improve the quality of the microphone? Even changing Roma have no real improvement?
the microphone is very poor. you notice that if you tap on the back of the tablet when recording it picks it up very loudly, but speaking into the microphone you can hardly hear anything.
video chat (gtalk seems to work best) is just about usable but you have to sit close and talk loud.
like the guy said, it wouldn't have cost a lot more to put in a better mic - i would have paid an extra £10 for something decent.
I tried to record a lecture with the microphone. Its so muffled and so bad that i was acutally amazed by how asus can market it to students. The camera is also of very bad quality.
What the f were they thinking....

Sister needs a good smartphone for school, how is the audio recording quality?

She plans on recording 1 to 2 hour lectures on a 3rd party audio recording app. I know the stock camera audio quality is horrendous but that doesn't matter to her if the audio quality is good on 3rd party apps.
I've heard so many complaints about the audio recording, but should she buy the phone to record lectures on something like Simple Voice Recorder?
We had this chap at the uni who professionally video recorded the whole year. failed every single module.
There are three ways to learning;
1- reading
2- writing
3- practicing
Listening would never be in the list. Tell her to stop being lazy.

She is not lazy. She studies everywhere, every occasion even past midnight and gets straight A's. She does whatever it takes to make sure she doesn't miss anything, and so she needs a smartphone with a good mic. Please don't judge my sister who you do not know.
Can someone give me their opinion on the audio recording quality?
I use Smart Voice Recorder (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andrwq.recorder) and you can set the recording quality e.g. bit rate etc.
I've only ever used it in CD quality (maximum it will do) and it's excellent (although yesterday recorded a meeting which was 1hr 45mins and it took up 550mb as it records as a .wav!! I then used Media Converter - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.AndroidA.MediaConverter to convert it to mp3 though.) I'm sure it works well in lesser quality too though. You're right the stock app is useless

Actually, I have a Nexus 4 myself. It's hard for me to test lecture recordings because I don't go to school anymore. But your enthusiasm gives me confidence. I don't want to recommend a phone to my sister and have her hate me for recommending a bad phone. I tested the recording myself with google keep and easy voice recorder and I can tell you the audio quality and volume input depends on the app.
calyxim, I do agree that audio recording lectures are ineffective (at least for me). I'm not going to just say it won't work for my sister, even if scientific studies show it is ineffective. If she still does and sees results, then I think she should do it.
I don't think audio recording is ineffective depending on the application of it. The best practice is to write notes and have the recording for reference. You can't write down everything that is said, so it is helpful to have a recording, should you have the need to better interpret your notes or for better clarification. The the second mic for noise cancelation on the N4 seems to do a poor job. I'm not sure with audio recording only, as I do none of that, but with video plus sound, it is horrible. I would find it hard to recommend this phone for that purpose.

[Q] Note 4 video's audio: Stereo or mono?

Since there are multiple mics, I was wondering if anyone had heard if the note 4's video had stereo sound recording or not?
I was thinking, since the software can isolate individual voices in voice recording, if they could even implement spacial widening of recorded sound in videos?
I haven't seen anyone post anywhere if the sound being recorded it mono or stereo yet.
I can't find it now but I was watching a note 4 video recording last night and in the beginning he's voice was centered and a quarter in to it his voice was only on the left side of my Nvidia shield tablet which comes with stereo speakers. If I find it again I will post it. It was in Spanish Btw.

Cool.. Maybe they've added stereo recording and just not bothered to mention it?
I finally freakin found it! If you notice in the beginning his voice is heard on both sides. Then at about 1:58 mark, you can hear his voice on the left mostly. You can still hear the rest of the background noise on both side.

phones have had stereo recording for the past like, 3 years. i sure hope the Note 4 would have it lol
our galaxy s3 phones were not stereo (that I'm aware of) and since like many we upgrade every two years, whats been available in the last year has been off my radar.. especially when its a feature not listed anywhere.

it wasn't?? damn. even my rezound was stereo, and that phone came out well before the GS3.
My T-Mobile Note 4 appears to record video in full stereo. While the audio has a few different settings, i.e. meeting, interview etc. it appears that it does not record in stereo.

4K video recording stops after 8 minutes of recording.

I've noticed that 4K video recording seems to be capped at approximately 8 minutes. I've had 2 separate videos stop recording at this time. Has anyone else had this issue and is there a way to bypass it? I have plenty of space on my 64GB 6P, so it'd be great to take advantage of all that space. Is is a processor or heat related issue?
I believe recording is always capped after 4gb (I think that's the limit might be 2). That's happened to me on previous devices when I try to record 1 hour at 1080p would have to remember to change it to 720p or lower. Not sure how to change that, especially without rooting.

I have the same problem recording in 1080p I can only record for 5 to 7 minutes. I also am rooted, what can I do to record longer?
This just happened to me tonight at my daughter's Christmas concert. Quit after 8 min 50 secs. I am test driving a Note 5 and a Nexus 6p. Between this and the mic problems, there's a good chance I'll send the 6p back. I never had this issue with my iPhones, and can't speak to whether the Note would have done it. It's frustrating because I really would have liked to have it all on video.
Likely both devices would have done something similar.. Iphones have in the past.

I decided to do a test. I set it to record and left it alone. It recorded about 31 minutes of video before shutting off. I'm wondering if the camera app quit or if I hit something accidentally during the recording. This may be a case of user error instead of an issue with the device.
At 4k?

Yesterday I also came across this limitation (8 minutoes in 4k video) with Nexus 6P camera but tried the Opencamera app (free) and it got past the 12minutes without problems (and it has more manual control for exposure, focus, bitrate) and after some testing with phone on a tripod I think I'm going to record my kid's X-mas party with bitrate of 20mbps because it uses half the space (I think default is 42mbps) and on a tripod it looks as good as default bitrate.
I've done another test with 20mbps and it stopped at 27mins and 4 seconds, I think file was already 4GB at this point, so maybe I could still get a longer recording time with 15mbps if needed (it is still pretty good quality for a tripod mounted camera)..
I'm not as happy with audio, I thought it was stereo but it's mono and I have the feeling that it is captured with MIC's facing wrong side of the phone... and at this point I have no time left for ordering external MIC's to test (but it should be mono as well, maybe better direction would give better quality in high frequencies - but that has to be next time). For now best option I think is selecting audio source to camcorder (I think it's the one that comes selected as default, but not the option called "default" and I did try to force stereo but file still gets mono audio but I hear high frequencies coming from rear MIC - not as bad as I thought) - I'd love to see an option to capture the audio from the 3 MIC's givving 3 channels audio (good to play on 5.1 systems using center, left and right speakers

Perhaps the flashable zip in the Nexus 6 forums to activate stereo recording would work on the 6P also?

I just recorded a Christmas ugly sweater party video at work in 720p on my 6P, and it stopped after 8m30s
Still experiencing this problem. Anyone else? Has anyone stumbled upon a fix? Thanks!

I was looking into the 6p specifically for 4k video so it's good to know about this problem. Sorry I can't offer help though.
