Nexus 4 720p/1080p video samples...

I know the device isn't out just yet, but I was wondering if anyone has seen a sample of Nexus 4 camcorder yet? (Front & Back). I rely heavily on my cameras for work & for other reasons & not to bash the G-Nex, but the camera sensor on this device is a little underwhelming to say the least. I heard the camera hardware was based off of the AT&T 8mp Optimus G, but I'm not sure if that's an actual spitting image of what we can expect from the N4.
Any links or input would be greatly appreciated in advanced. Worst case scenario, 10 days isn't too far away!

Thanks sooo much for the quick reply with content. The actually image quality is quite an improvement, but my problem lies with the FPS & the audio to a certain extent. I wasn't expecting perfection, so I'm overall happy with what we have here. I'm sure it'll get better between camera mods & software updates. Thanks again.

The mic makes the video so crap, I tried to record video with my GS2 once upon a time and it was far worse than my old iPhone 4 which had such amazing audio quality. I mean I went to Reading last year and the iPhone 4 was super clear, picked up good bass and sounded great but the GS2 just sounded like I was rubbing a plastic bag over the mic and the bass just killed the mic all together.
So if the audio sucks then there is no point to it shooting video tbh. I just have a separate camera though so it doesn't bother me too much though.

I would love it if someone uploaded the original video file from the phone. Youtube seems to always use an aggressive compression on user uploads, I rarely see good 1080p videos on the site, even from pro cameras.

Make sure to go fullscreen when watching the video and turn your youtube video to 720p HD.

I get HEAVY compression artifacts on the video recordings at 1080p on the nexus 4 itself - even when I upload to the PC. The sound and video is compressed sounding too.

Do you hear pops in your videos?

Wondering if my phone is defective. It's a Korean GS4.
Seems to work fine but videos have occasional pops in the audio. Using 1080P setting (why use anything different? LOL).
I heard it originally and just thought it was from my hands, fingers moving but it's in all the videos and happens at random.
The camera does write to a 32GB microSD but I've been using that in my Note II for about six months and that takes perfect video in comparison.

Yes it happens to me at some moments but I think its the microphone picking up finger movement..

Yes, I hear a pop at the beginning of only some of my videos as well.

I hear the pop at the beginning of nearly all the videos.
I did the OTA update yesterday, lemme take some more video and see if it comes back.
Most of the videos are quiet.
Just shot some video at the studio with some pretty good drum smashing and heard no popping, just lots of snares and cymbals LOL. Doesn't seem to compress the sound, I know the GS3 clipped quite badly but I have a few tests to see if its mic just rolls off sharply below 40Hz to stop that.
These cameras can record pretty decent video but the sound is smashed, probably done intentionally to keep good videos of concerts out but a good digital recorder in the pocket and editing can fix that.

Is the audio when recording and shooting video fixed?

The S4 and Note 3 have this issue, random and quite annoying popping when recording audio. I was really disappointed when I heard it on the Note 3! Hopefully it has been fixed on the S5!

We'll see when I get mine. I'll let you know. But I think, it'll not be there for some S4 and Note 3, there's no popping when they record.

I've had numerous S4 and Note III samples through my hands and they have this issue. It's not an isolated issue. My Note II, HTC One, G2, iPhone 3/4/5s etc. have no such issues whatsoever. Normally I record video and audio separately but the argument (the best camera is the one you have with you) applies to a cell phone to capture things as they happen, unplanned. It's annoying to have these sounds in the audio.

weird i never experienced such thing on s3, n2, s4..

like I said, I've recorded plenty of guitar videos with my s4, through a Marshall dsl100 stack, which is loud and bassy, and it never ever ever had a problem with audio. it was always so clear and detailed, albeit only 128kbps. my g2 has that horrible underwater wishy-washy sound that makes the video camera unusable. I've never once seen audio artifacting on the s4. I had the snapdragon version, maybe you had the exynos?

my audio was terrible on my S3 when recording video at festivals/concerts...hope this is fixed on the S5...everyone i know that has iPhones has no issue recording loud audio.

Yes the problem is not with loud music like other devices which hard clip especially on kick drum hits...
This popping noise is most common when it's very quiet like recording at night with just the crickets outside...
And yes the audio was completely unusable on the G2 for me as well, if you recorded video in a loud cafe, no problem. But as soon as you went into a quiet area the gain levelers started getting really confused and there was all kinds of problems with sound. Ashame too since its camera (G2) was so nice...
Back to the S5, I have one in hand and while I have not put it through the gears my preliminary findings reveal a completely changed recording from the S4/Note3 hardware. The AGC does tend to bring up the levels higher when ambient sound changes but at least there's no nasty pops. The pops on the S4/Note3 can be removed with a click/decrackle plugin on most DAW software but they shouldn't be in there in the first place. This looks promising.
The video low light performance looks very good, I was shining a focused down aspheric torch (flashlight) around the pasture at long range and the screen was 100% black except where the beam was hitting objects at hundreds of yards away (barn, trees, etc.) and the detail looked shockingly good! I viewed the video on my Macbook Pro w/ retina display so it's a valid test.
Have not tried to see if it's IR filtered. Tonight we'll have the burn barrels going, that's the best IR test I know of without taking it to the lab.
These processors are so powerful it would be nice if they gave us the option of lossless audio recording and even a RAW photo option, although these tiny sensors would need a LOT of post processing to make the images useable. Still, however I always find that RAW+ Photoshop CS6 post processing looks better than the camera's aggressive post processing tuned for speed and convenience. With a 128GB microSD card, RAW+JPG would be fine.

Yep, I have several concerts recorded in 2012 and the audio clips worse than these kids with their pyramid amp powered systems playing hip hop with the bass turned to 11!
That's why I always record audio and video on separate devices. They won't allow a real camera (no cams with removable lenses that is!) in most venues...

I was at a gig on Friday night and sadly all my videos have distorted sound quality. Issue stll exists..

I can confirm the popping is present in my unit too. Had it on S4 as well. It tends to occur less when the sound is turned to minimum while recording.

Took my phone to a 2 day long concert, here's what I liked

After 12 hours a day and recording almost 100 videos on the highest setting the phone battery never went down past 50% (each day mind you). The phone was starting to get warm about mid way through the day, not sure if it was the sun beating down on my pants (I was in Jacksonville, FL) or due to the constant recording, but it never got extremely hot.
I took some videos zoomed in max at 8x and the quality is honestly not bad. Definitely not HD quality but you can see quite well what you're looking at.
The audio came out better than any other I've seen or heard from others who were with me, two being S7 Edges​, and another an iPhone 7 plus.
The stability when zoomed in 8x was also amazing to me. I could walk around someone who got in the way and it looked like I was barely moving, definitely didn't seem as if I were holding my phone in the air.
The way it picks up light was also better than any other phone I was able to compare with. When the later bands played in the dark I could still see so much detail and wasn't flushed out by either low light or having the stage lights drown out what my camera could see.
Definitely impressed and glad I had this phone with me for this event. Not professional quality but amazing nonetheless, so I figured I'd share with others my experience. I'm willing to answer any questions to anything I may have forgotten to give better details for. I don't really use my YouTube account to upload videos but if need be I could upload a few for those who are curious.

Is there a chance you could share some video samples of what you got?
I haven't had a chance to take my S8+ to a concert yet.

Does the zoom still severely distort the audio?
On the Note 7, audio zoom was enabled by default. It's a good idea, say if you're recording someone talking across the room and when you zoom in it increases the mic gain so you (may) hear them.
Problem is at a gig either on stage or front row with stacks of amps and columns ripping at 120dB and you decide to zoom in the audio distorts horribly. Like makes you want to stab your eyes out with a fork horrible! And there is no way to disable it. The solution is to not use zoom but when recording at 4K using up to 4X optical zoom is generally OK if you re-render your edits at 1080. Fortunately the gigs I did this with I was using a digital recorder and have decent audio tracks to go with the video. Otherwise I'd be screwed. I have not tried recording with mine yet but I may bring it to drum rehearsal and kick things up a bit and zoom in on the kit.

Not too sure about the audio and zoom feature. Didn't even know that existed to be honest. I will say that there are a few I started out with no zoom and I zoomed in during the video but I don't think I really noticed a difference in audio quality. I'm not the pickiest when it comes to stuff like that and none of it is Hollywood material but still impressed nonetheless.

Ok been a while but I finally got to test this and can confirm the audio zoom "feature" is definitely still there! :|
So when recording events such as live venues with loud SPL particularly lower frequencies do NOT use the zoom if at all possible.
Your audio will be very distorted.
Otherwise, it shoots fine.

Disappointing audio quality when filming videos at loud music concerts...

Hello all,
My previous phone was a Moto X Style (or Pure in the US) and the sound quality while filming videos at loud heavy metal/hard rock concerts was very good. My battery life having become abysmal, I decided to switch to the LG V20 last Fall, knowing I'll really miss the front-facing stereo speakers but thinking I'd improve the quality of my live music videos.
So far, 3 concerts with the V20 and struck out the 3 times. 1st 2 concerts, I tried to mess around with the manual video settings and the resulting videos had bad sound, clipping... Video itself was not too bad, but far from perfect. For the 3rd concert, I said, to hell with manual, I'll go fully automatic, as I did with my Moto X Style. Results for the audio were a bit better than with the manual settings, but still a far cry from what I got with my Moto X Style.
I read everywhere that the V20 was the phone to get if you wanted the best possible live music video recordings. And it's not happening. Is there something wrong with my phone? Anyone had manual settings they use at loud music shows they'd agree to share?

You've got to open the Camera app, select Manual Video from the top (second screen), then ensure you've got your high fidelity audio settings correctly selected. You will likely need to reduce the 'Gain' setting to avoid clipping, as concerts are ridiculously loud. You'll find that the 'Concert' setting in manual video mode presets that for you.
If all else fails, HD Audio Recorder in the app drawer allows for high fidelity recording as well, albeit without the video.

My apologies, concert mode in HD audio recorder app is what I was referring to. Yes, you can copy those same settings into Manual Video mode though. That should help you out.
Here's a brief but very good beginners tutorial on video settings that you should learn to use with your manual mode in both video and photo applications. This V20 is fantastic at a multitude of different functions.

Lastly, after studying these variables a bit and learning to play around with them in your own home, or outdoors during practice sessions, give it a shot at your concerts. You can always record during the opening performers prior to the main event. Run outside to the bathroom and see how well the video and audio recorded, then make adjustments from there.
**Note** I did say 'Bathroom' .. you don't want event staff to catch you making HD recordings of live performances lol! That'll get you in a bit of trouble.
ONE last mention; in manual video mode, you can toggle between UHD at 30fps (2160p) or FHD (1080p) at 60fps.
I would think due to low exposure and rapid light shows, you might want FHD60.

You've to record video using manual mode and then adjust your mic settings , becuase it has too many useful adjustments.

To keep it real imo, the v20 sucks when it comes down to just point and shoot. I get your point, I've been places where I just want to take a quick picture or video and it comes out horrible on my V20. When I switch to manual and adjust settings then the picture/video is very good. If you go to concerts a lot I would suggest different phone like pixel or take a few extra minutes in concert to get just the right manual settings.

Agreed, pixel 2 might be the king of all smart phone cameras to date. I purchased this V20 because it's identical to having a $350-400 external headphone amp.
On my reference level floor tower speakers, playing back lossless audio with high impedance mode... Oh boy it makes me tingle...

Well.... I'm starting to think my V20 has mic problems... Because I was at a concert on Monday. Recorded some live videos in manual mode, with the same settings as "Concert" of the Hi-Fi Recorder app. And the results are far to be stellar. Sound is not very good, still with some cracking. Image is fine. I even tried the Hi-Fi Recorder app (so no video) and the sound is not too good either... Really disappointed by this...
My Moto X Style was much better for this, without having to mess up with any settings...

Didn't try with headphones, but transferred the files on my PC which is connected to my big sound system. And it doesn't sound good....

You look at the scale of the left and right channels next to the setting button. It should not be red, even in yellow is not desirable.
If the low frequencies are too strong, you can reduce the LCF to 75 Hz

Don't know if you'll see this? I have been live audience recording concerts for 23+ years. I just bought a v20 and had the same experience. Wasn't what I expected. Seeing this now. Didnt realize there were manual settings for video recording. The problem is the LMT. TURN IT TO "OFF". probably don't need LFC either unless there is too much bass in the room? Boomy sounding? Watch the gain settings too. 0db is probably fine depending on how loud the concert is. Turn it down if it looks like the Wave file is a solid block. The reason you don't want to use the LMT is because it suppresses the loud spikes in the music and it does it very slowly which makes the audio sound swishy. It ruined 3 clips I shot at a recent concert. I never use a limiter (LMT) when I record because of that. Good luck
