Pros and cons - Eee Pad Transformer General

Hello everyone in the asus eeepad world... can anyone or everyone tell me the pros and cons of this tablet? I was thinking about buying this tablet but not sure if I should yet so plz...reply all u want, thx!
Sent from my LG Thrill 4G on Cm7 Nightlies with ICS theme!

Pros
Cheap
Everything works
Amazing battery life
Great Devs
Cons
Little clunky
Not the greatest build quality (lightblead ect)

Pros: Micro SD slot, attachable keyboard (which comes with 2 USB slots, and one SD card slot), battery (up to 13 hours with keyboard charging), mini HDMI (although I haven't used it yet!).
Cons: Slow, Camera lens collects dust inside, screen reflexes a lot of lighting, collects alot fingerprints which makes it annoying, not every video format works (that's why I don't use mini HDMI), uses only it's own USB cable.

Pro: It's a tablet
Con: A little heavy to be used hand-held.
Don't buy a TF101 now unless you must. Wait until March when Samsung releases Galaxy tab 2, which is actually a low price model. This will drive down the price of many other tablets, including Transformer.

It is pretty heavy to be hand-held (an opinion I made after playing with my friend's Kindle Fire), but it's nice when you set it with a cover/stand thing on your lap, in front of your face, or lying down with it on your chest (unless you are a bosomy female, I guess).
I'd add microphone sucks for recording sound to the con list. I think it'd be a lot more useful if/when we get ICS + Cornerstone.

Overall do you guys think its better than ipad and/or the nook

GTab2 is a 7-inch tablet. Why would this drive down the price in the 10-inch arena?

The only thing I say it's that i would prefer a better looking screen (like galaxy tab 10.1)
The rest is really really good
...and with ICS things will be better more

I so look foreword to buying the eeepad transformer and seeing you all again... I think the choice is obvious and I just have to save up now I just need 100$$$ now so... I will see all of u again soon thanks foe the help!(you can still post here I'm not done listening to the pros lol)

Thx and srry but what does light bleed mean?
Press thx if I helped!
Sent from my LG Thrill 4G on Cm7 Nightlies with ICS theme!

It means on the margins of the screen you sometimes see a light/glow peering out towards the center of the screen.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjHJ_dkGKSQ
It's really only noticeable on dark screens. If you're watching a lit up movie you won't notice a thing.

Mine is barely noticeable. I actually have to look for it and I routinely use main in the dark at night.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium

isn't it light bleed common on ips screen?
i remember i read this somewhere else

lightbleed occurs on all backlit screens. eg IPS displays (Transformer, xoom,Ipad) are notoriously bad with light bleed hardly noticeable except in the boot screen though

Pros:
Excellent multimedia device for movies, book reading, internet browsing, email, note taking, music, games, news reader etc.
Great screen. I've had mine since the summer and have NO light bleed. I know what it looks like; I have an Evo with horrid light bleed issues.
Value for what you get is unsurpassed by anything on the market.
Customization No two Transformers will look alike unless they are straight out of the box. I disagree with the statement "lacks developer support". There are many ROMS out there and rooting is pretty easy if you are looking to tweak.
Asus is pretty good with updates in my opinion though some are impatient with the ICS update delay, but Asus has been updating this tablet faster than any other tablets on the market.
Micro SD available for expansion a must if you want to put a couple movies on it to watch when you have no wireless access.
Cons:
Fingerprints? It's a touchscreen what do you expect?
Heavier than some other tablets but not unbearable unless you are playing accelerometer type games. Get a case that supports on the tabletop and it becomes a non-issue.
Light glare is an issue especially fluorescent lights Takes getting used to angling away from the glare.
All in all this pad is one of the best tech purchases I have made in years. I am not disappointed at all and look forward to updating this tab when the 700 series hits the market. It allows options few other tabs allow and if you throw in the keyboard dock, no other tablet allows. I highly recommend it.

Well at launch it had a lot of bugs but I think they're fixing themp up one by one
Personally I would've bought the prime but I didn't have the extra 100 dollars so yeah good choice!

Pros:
Fantastic screen
Cheaper than other 10 inch tablets
MicroSD slot
Docking keyboard
Very little bloatware
Cons
Some have noted that the Transformer is larger and more clunky than other comparable tablets. While this is true, it does not bother me
I've had to deal with Asus's customer service and RMA process. It isn't fun. So, while this really isn't a gripe with the tablet, I think it should be taken into consideration
The back of the tablet is 'creaky' when small amounts of pressure is applied (i.e. holding it normally)

I got mine and Im happy with it thread!

I read a lot on this forum but dont post much. I havent seen a lot of positive things about the the new Tab. I just have to say I am very happy with my purchase so far. I was able to walk into my local Best Buy after 6pm on launch day and pick up a white 32GB. Funny thing is the Website stated they had 3 white and 4 black 32GB and when I got there they said all they had was the black. To make a long story short the Best Buy employee actually had to open the box and look at the Tab itself to tell if it was white or black. Apparently there is no way to tell on the outside of the box(I would assume the model number would). Anyways, I have owned the Xoom,Iconia and the Playbook and none of them hold a candle to this. Honeycomb does have a long way to go, however I do think this is a giant step foward in the right direction.
Please leave your experience so far if you are happy
never had a tablet before so nothing to compare it to, but so far I really dig it!
Ill join you on the happy part. Ive had my tab since Tuesday and I'm loving it. I haven't run into any of the issues that have been posted in some of the other threads. I'm in love with the fluu blown multitasking. I can easily jump app to app without loosing a spot. Perfect for those copy and paste situations.
Some of my favorite apps...
News360/Pulse
Native YouTube app
Thumb keyboard (must have)
PlayOn (yay hulu and Netflix)
Weatherbug for tablets
Grooveip

I just got mine today, too. White, 16GB
I asked for a Grey 32GB one, but they had none. I still wanted a Grey one, but even though they had it in stock, they gave me a white one, and I didn't notice till I got home. They even ran out of keyboard docks too. Oh well, I'm stuck with this one now.
After a few hours of use, I started to wonder about all the negative posts and reviews on XDA and everywhere else. I do notice certain points, like how browser lags when typing, but it seemed minor to me since I noticed that the key presses still recognized, and I was surprisingly accurate and fast using it, despite this being the first tablet I've ever owned.
Games are pretty and crisp. I've only experienced some minor lag in Plants vs. Zombies at the end of each stage, otherwise it played well.
A great experience so far.
i am happy with the tab but honeycomb needs some work.
I've had mine since *** yesterday *** and am happy with it. The one thing that I wish I could do is color calibrate the screen. While the bright, cartoonish color is liked by many, I would like to be able to calibrate the screen for more accurate color to display photos and play the videos that I shoot. Even with my 32GB unit, I am missing the microSD slot that I have on the Nook Color.
I'm very happy with mine. Sure, it has some issues, but nothing too bad and I believe most of them will be fixed by software updates in the future.
It's rather obvious, but all big smiles here too
Just to state a few, easy to the eye and ears(quality build, screen, speakers), easy to carry and hold(super light, thin, with textured back), responsive, fast and versatile OS (widgets thrive, google apps reign, multimedia a beauty to run, even if it currently has a few glitches like lag in typing in certain websites boxes).
Just loving it!
I'm loving it so far. Honeycomb does have some issues to work out.
One thing that is truly bothering me is the lack of quick controls in the browser.
The official accessories not being available is also annoying.
But man o man I'm loving the hardware ,the screen ,and the form factor.
I have a 16 grey and I'm very pleased with my purchase. At the time I wanted a 32 but best buy had none in stock. I also have an unlocked version so I'm scared to return it can't wait for some custom kernels to fix some lag this thing has. Other then that I am very pleased. Honeycomb does need work. Hopefully the touchwiz update fixes some lag. I no it usually just bloats the system but this version seems nice! A few software kinks but love it! Can't wait for ICS (open source) that should fix pretty much everything for ow though very happy

This tablet will essentially replace my phone for in house usage. Loving it so far, only wish the app support was better.
I'm digging it. I sincerely hope with the 5k that were given to devs we'll get more support!
I'm very pleased with this tablet. It feels much nicer to hold than my previous tablet.
Can someone with a 16GB tell me what their total space available is showing? Mine's at 13GB. I could have swore it was 14.2GB or somewhere around there.
I'm also very happy with mine, I actually have no problems with Honeycomb itself -- but more apps need to support it. Thumb Keyboard + News360 + Flash 10.3 + Dolphin HD + YouTube + Samurai II = my Sunday.
I just got it! By a coincidence it arrived the same day as the iPad2 I bought for my uncle, and I did a comparison side by side. Although I am used to iOS (I have an iPhone), I immediately felt honeycomb as more flexible, out of the box, than iOS. As for Aesthetic, I can say that the GT feels much lighter than the iPad, I can handle it better.
In few words: I am really happy, so far.
I've had mine since Friday. I love the look and feel of the GT. It looks and feels much better than the Xoom, in my opinion (I had a Xoom for just under 2 weeks) and it's definitely lighter than the Xoom. I compared it to my gf's iPad 2 and it is a little bigger, but feels lighter. So I love this tablet.
I don't love the lack of tablet optimized apps or the lack of Netflix or Google Movies. Compared to the iPad it's definitely lacking in those areas, but the tablet itself and honeycomb are excellent.
I've had my LE I/O version for about a month now and absolutely love it. It's light, feels great in my hands, it's fast, I even love Honeycomb... Not sure why so many people complain about it. Hopefully over the next few months we'll start seeing more HC versions of apps.
edit: forgot to mention the battery life is freakin amazing. I can go 3-5 days with moderate usage and it won't die.
Got one from Amazon. So far happy with it. Need to look into how to root and OC the cpu.
The smartbench 2011 score is less than Viewsonic (OCed to 1.4Ghz).
Im absolutely in love with my tablet
Well, I have to admit that so far I ampretty in love with this tablet. The screen is amazing and the weight and thickness make this feel really nice in the hand. I am really enjoying honeycomb so far and do not see any problems so far. I was kinda worried about buying this but I am relieved. I also really love the look of it. I have the grey one and it looks really nice. So far I am a happy tablet owner

Xoom vs TF101 vs Galaxy 10.1 vs iPad2

Hey all,
Figured I'd pass on my opinions of these devices, and since I finally chose the TF, I figured I'd get the least flames posting here - lol. Looooong time gadget geek/hacker going way back to the Palm Pilot days. If it was a tech gadget, and particularly if it was internet capable, I probably owned one. My current phones are a HTC Desire Z (w/ NAM AT&T 3G) running CM7, and an iPhone 4 jailbroken.
Over the past couple of months I've owned (or still own) the Xoom, iPad 2, TF101 (w/dock) and GTab 10.1. I still own all but the Xoom, and here's a few of my thoughts on all of them and why I'll be keeping the TF.
Xoom - Well built, sturdy, and nice design. Lousy screen (comparitively) and lack of promised features like LTE and the SD Card werre a bummer, but my biggest reason for selling that one was the screen, and seeming lack of "responsiveness" from Moto on the device. Plus I knew cooler devices were coming soon.
iPad 2 - Not yet Jailbroken (grrr) but it's still a suprisingly good media consumption device as is. I go the 32GB AT&T model, and have used it for a couple of trips as a laptop replacement. It'll be cooler when I can JB it, but since I have a fiarly big investment in iOS software, I'll probably keep it a while. Not real impressed with it's Safari performance, considering all the hub-bub about how fast it is. But it does do games great, is slick and trouble free, and nice sized with a great (smart-cover) solution.
Galaxy Tab 10.1 - I got this one on Sunday, so I haven't given it a whole lot of time. It's a beautiful, "Apple like" device from a design perspective. Also the screen while very saturated, is very nice, light weight and thinness also gets it lots of oooohs and aaawwwws from everybody. I hate that Samsung doesn't allow direct mounting of the internal storage, and we're forced to use that awful KIES software. I've just been using Drobbox and all my music is in the Google cloud. This one would have been my second choice if I didn't already have (and love) the...
Transformer 101- now this one is my keeper. A lot has to do wth the dock - I'm an "ultraportable" laptop fan (current Lenovo x220) so I like smaller laptops, and man this thing makes a damn good laptop substitute with tablet caapabilities. The screen is gorgeous, the responsiveness of the OS is equal to or better than the other Androids, and even beats iPad when Safari is sucking wind. I love the quick controls in the browser (missing in the Tab) and that it feels like there's a really robust community developing for this device. I'm not rooted on any of these yet, and actually pretty content like that. Therre's a few things I'd do with root (and anti ad hosts file for one!) but for the most part I'm ok with them as is. When I start to get bored I'll probably root this too.
I sold the Xoom about a month aftr I bought it, I'll keep the iPad (partly for the fun things to try like iOS 5 and it's great for kids to play games on) but the Tab is going back to BB (restocking fee be damned.
I just really like the versatility of the TF w/dock. I have it paired with a small BT mouse and it's like a pretty full featured laptop, that goes into Tablet mode at the flick of a switch. Still on the hunt for the slimmest folio case for it that allows it to be propped up for typing, but the kybd dock does that for now.
Hope these tips help some people interested in any of these, remember their just mmy opinions and everybody has different needs and required attributes that may differ from mine. Either way their all fun.
If anybody has any question about my experiences, fire away, love to chat gadget talk abou the cool toys.
-Joel

Good Post. Thanks.

I quite agree with you.
From all these devices i tried the iPad 2 and the ASUS transformer.
Im already acquainted with iOS and although its simple and intuitive it's kind of boring. im quite into personalizing my device which the iOs wont really allow.
The bigger and wide screen on the transformer is really nice, and although build-wise it may seems "cheaper" then the iPad (everything that is not shiny-aluminum-ultra-appleish is cheap nowdays) its a comfortable device to hold in the hand.
Price-wise the transformer costs less, + the keyboard dock which increases battery life and also allows you to use it as a netbook.
Performance seems to be almost identical on both A5 and the Tegra 2. BUT the transformer is overclockable, therefore you can squeeze some more juice out of it.
I didnt use the other two, but by reviews i understood that the xooms screen is washed out and not all that great, and the lack of a MicroSD on all of the three (xoom,iPad,GT10.1) is meh-ish.
just picked up mine last night after doing a lil bit of reseasch for a week or so glad i chose this one,, love you wife she bought for me.. BAMBAM

Regarding TF and Tab 10.1 screens, which do you prefer? Which is nicer for news/e-book reading? Does Tab 10.1 oversaturation mess with your eyes?

Don't agree with this point. I had the Tab 10.1 for about 3-4 days and I had it mounted on my PC as a plug-play device and was able to transfer files directly. All your need is to install the proper USB drivers from the Samsung US site

Yes it does. Although the Galaxy screen seems better than the TF , its for sure over saturated and hurts your eyes if watched closely for lot of time.

Yeah, you could be right. I'm just so happy with the flexibility of the TF that for now (and for now could be 1-3 months lol) it's the one I'm choosing. IAs I stressed, this is just my humble opinion, hope everybody is happy with their respective choices.
glad to see that are still people who can choose between products without trashing another.
i'm stlll not sure if i'll send my tf back. i do like the versatility it has but seeing that i am keeping my gt 10.1 it's really hard to justify keeping it.
I don't think the keyboard dock can be stressed enough, and I wish I saw more advertising from Asus around the tremendous increase in productivity it provides. It's really not "just" an external keyboard or dock. It really does turn the TF into a completely different class of machine.
That said, I'll admit that if it weren't for the dock, I'd probably opt for the GT 10.1. I don't really use the microSD card I have in my TF right now, and I doubt I'll ever use HDMI. So if choosing between the two on the screen, size and weight alone, I'd probably lean toward the GT. However, man, the keyboard dock makes me want to stick with the TF no matter what else might be out there. As someone who needs to be able to write long-form stuff anywhere, I can't think of a better device than the TF...
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
i'd have to suppose the lack of advertising is one major factor for the price of the tablet. moto, apple, samsung all have commercials yet i've not seen one asus commercial, not even for their laptops.
To each his own I guess. I played with them all as well including the acer and viewsonic and kept the wifi Xoom. I really wanted to like the Asus because of price but it was just as bulky as my xoom and had serious build quality issues. The Asus screen was great, the quality around the screen, not so much. Enjoy your new toy dude. Aint technology fun
The only one I haven't played with is the tab 10.1, I secretly want one but Samsung and I have bad history.

The dock is the absolute biggest reason for my choice. With my BT mouse (dislike trackpads) I feel like I'm using a real computer, with 16hr batter life and tablet flexibility. Love the shape, size and design of both the iPad and Tab 10.1, but just love the flexibility of the keybd dock too much - at least for the next 90 days or so. ;-)

Ok, I'm a little late to the game... but if anyone buys one of these tablets second hand.... like I just did, then here goes nothing: I bought a Motorola XOOM wifi (32gb) and an Asus TF101 (16gb) (and I nearly bought a Galaxy Tab 1 and an iPad Gen. 1). It's my first tablet; I haven't yet figured out what I'm gonna do with it, but there ya go.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 1: I passed on the Sammy because it did not have an SD card slot.
iPad Gen. 1: I passed on the iPad because.... well, it's an iPad. About as useful as a maxi-pad to me. I was put off by the closed system. It means far less choices for free or hard-to-get apps (of the kind I might need), and limited storage with no SD card options. It wouldn't do, even for a kid's tablet. (Despite the fact I have an iPhone....).
Asus Transformer Eee Pad TF101: I really wish they would have stuck to one name, and left it at that. What was the original name? The "Asus Transormer Mario Consuela Maria Concito Esperanto Gonzalez Eeee Pad TF-101"?
Motorola Xoom: Anyway, it came down to Asus and the Xoom. And boy, I had a hard time deciding. So hard, I spent 3 days of my life testing these two tablets, up, down, backwards and forwards. I ended up settling on the Xoom, but first, the Asus....
The Asus has a gorgeous screen, compared to the Xoom. The TF101 is sharper, more clarity, brighter, blacks and whites are more darker and brighter, respectively. Better contrast and angle viewing, and reading books is less of a strain with a more muted white for the background.
THe sound of the Asus however, is like slamming a suitcase lid down on twelve kittens while Freddy Krueger scratches his name out on the chalkboard. It's the ridiculous choice of stuffing really tiny speakers so they can fire out both sides of the unit. Even EQ'ing the thing with Viper4FX could not hide the tinny shortcomings of the speaker sound. Which also had a tendency to break up at louder volumes (its particularly keen to distorting around 500hz). Connected to a stereo though, was quite another matter.
Though much less bass, richness and body, the Asus resolved timbre better than the Xoom on music program material, output through a stereo via headphone jacks. However, I still preferred the sound of the XOoms (yes, "Xooms" as in I had TWO Xooms to compare), because the Asus was causing some degree of stress through its sound and picture, as compared with the calmer energy of the Xooms.
The construction of the Asus was nice in parts (ie. color, back design, aluminum frame)... but the superb construction, design, looks, case and smaller size of the Xooms is what pushed me toward the Motorola choice. I have not seen any tablet as well built as the Xoom. The Xoom has a timeless design and hough it is heavy on the wrist if you have to hold it up, it just feels nicer in the hand than the ultra-wide Transformer; which appears more dated due to its size and design. The really nice charging dock and 32gb internal (vs 16gb of Asus) also helped me accept the inferior colors and viewing angle of the Xoom. I also liked the nice design of the various white & green charging LEDs, around the screen of the Xoom - the Asus has none of that. I was not enamored by the fact that Asus required special prorpietary data cables, where the Xoom uses microUSB. What also pushed me toward the Xoom was the mediocre camera in the Asus. No flash and grainy photos (though it let in an unusual amount of light, despite or because of no flash... but it was too much light, and washed out detail at times). The Xoom 5mp camera was excellent... perhaps better than that on my iPhone. I like the idea of snapping pictures on a tablet, because of the large viewfinder.
I'm kind of a stickler when it comes to design. On pure performance and lightness of weight, the Asus wins. But you might not feel like a winner, trying to listen to vidoes and music on those tinny built in speakers for extended periods of time.
My wife has a Samsung Tab 4, and comparing it with the Asus, I don't find the Tab 4 any much better in any way, and in some ways, not as a good (it has a cheaper build, for example).

[Q] Worth buying

Pretty simple Q.
Is this tab worth buying, or should one wait for something better around the corner?
Hearing many issues from screen problems through to lag on the interface. What are owners opinions-pros/cons? I am looking specifically at 3G model.
TIA.
There will always be a better device off in the future somewhere.
You should buy what serves your needs now; not wait for that illusary future device.
People that post on these forums are the ones that have strong opinions. "In a pitch black room with a dim display I see ghosting". Don't let posts like that worry you - the average user does not use the device that way.
The Galaxy Tab 7.7 is the best device with it's form factor available today. Try one and see if you like it - that is the only test that counts.

In my view definately the screen is very sharp and clear , the issues noted are not very evident with the screen at least with mine far superior to the P1000 . The lag is due to touchwiz and honeycomb not the hardware. ICS is round the corner and should put this right if not im sure the devs on here will. As for something round the corner always is only a year since 7" came and at the time I thought that was cutting edge . I have had mine for two weeks 10/10
10/10 here too.
no issue at all.
I consider Tablet + Phone at this price = cheap!

This. Because of it's form factor I think it's the best tablet out right now.
This TAB is amazing, I recommend it.
The TouchWIZ UX is lagging on top of honeycomb which isn't helping, so ICS will iron all these out.
You can get rid of the lagging by using ADW Launcher EX.
i own around 20 tablets and this is by far the best one i've ever had. I even got me a new 3g contract for it!

Pretty simple Q.
Is this tab worth buying, or should one wait for something better around the corner?
Hearing many issues from screen problems through to lag on the interface. What are owners opinions-pros/cons? I am looking specifically at 3G model.
TIA.

I love mine, perfect form-factor for me.. And the AMOLED screen is amazing!
GPS Performance?
Hi all
For those who have the 7.7 (3G or WiFi) - I am looking at purchasing a 3G import...
Just interested in the GPS performance as i've read varying reports on how good a sat lock the unit gets...
I need something that will be reasonably reliable and want to use it with OziExplorer mapping software...
Any reviews or info from actual users of the tab?
Cheers
Well, the GPS performance is stellar to say the least.
I'm using Sygic and Google Maps, it locks very fast.
I would also give it a 10/10
It is exactly what i was looking for I do notice some slight lag in the launcher but every android device i have ever used has had slight lag in the launcher.
When I get into apps though this thing really flys.
The screen simply can't be beat and i have watched a ton of video on it already and the high resolution makes reading things much better too.
the device size and weight might be my favorite part. It is light enough that holding it for a while is not nearly as bad as say holding an ipad for a while or even holding my old nook color for a while. And talking about the nook color the gt7.7 has about the same over all dimensions as a 7" device yet has a larger screen size that really adds a huge bonus.
I am using the $30 a month tablet plan on att and it is working great.
Lastly I wanna say I reallly like the stock browser in this device it is extremely smooth and quick.

Get rid of the TW Launcher, use ADW Launcher EX. Its very very smooth.
Totally worth the buy!
The display is big, clear and sharp, sound is great on the speakers.
But the main attraction for me about this tablet is that it can last thru my entire workday and still have over 50+% battery left. (thats about 12hrs of non stop radio streaming, hundreds of gmail pushes, phone calls, and brief browsing of the web)
Basically this device replace my ipad + phone + phone charger.

Xoom v Galaxt tab 8.9?

Trying to decide which i would prefer!
I like the slim light Sammy, but the Xoom seems smoother. There are issues with the 8.9 that means its quite laggy, even with the best custom ROMs. The hope is ICS will fix it. The Xoom is silky smooth but the screen isnt so good. What are your thoughts?
Are you sure its still laggy with custom rom?
might just be touchwiz. They are both technically more than capable.
Your first task is to decide which sideboard more suitable and also which looks better. Done.
My understanding is that touchwiz is an issue, but that there is still something else going on to do wit portrait/landscape orientation. The 8.9 is reversed compared to the Xoom and as such some games dont work properly and it lags.
The Xoom feels older and is heavy, but seems better value. Both are £279 in the UK right now. Maybe ill order both and return the one i dont like as much..
Xoom all the way. Just sold my 8.9 for a xoom. Its a better value and overall experience. If size and screen is a factor get the 8.9. But overall the xoom is better in every way. Plus updates are key

Hey there...
I currently have a Xoom 2 (typing on it right now actually), and my fiancee has the 8.9 Samsung...from what I have seen so far:
- the 8.9 screen is beautiful, and nicer than my Xoom2
- Xoom 2 is quite glitchy/laggy in my opinion (I am rooted and running 3.2.2), as I am typing this I'm struggling with the keyboard (words are slow to appear and not a fluid typing experience)
- have waited an eternity for any kind of update from Motorola... I'm not holding my breath for ICS (even though I am already running it on my SGS )
-8.9 is slightly more comfortable to hold over longer periods because it's smaller
-Xoom stock browser is pretty good, quite stable...although I now use Opera Mini Next
-Latest 3.2.2 update has fixed a lot of graphical bugs and seems to be running a little smoother than on 3.2
-On the negative side, the 8.9 uses Kies, which is a dealbreaker for me...never want to use that rubbish software again after all the trouble I had with my SGS
Overall, if I had to make the choice I'd probably go for the Samsung...because you can connect it as mass storage and bypass Kies...you'll just have to use 3rd party aps/software for backing up your data.
However, I'm afraid I cant comment on the android development for each device...i just know that currently there is sweet FA available for the Xoom 2 (I've only just found out how to root it), but no ROMs as yet. I havent looked in the 8.9 section, so cannot comment on the possibility of modding it. But i believe there is a lot of stuff available for the original Xoom, which is nice !
Disclaimer...I'm sure there are plenty of people that will disagree with me about some of the points above, but hey, thats life
Hope some of this helps you

- Xoom with ICS is quite smooth.
- Xoom is heavy - but that indicates a higher build quality. But, I'll go for light myself next time since I take good care of my stuff and carry stuff in individual neoprene cases in my bag.
- Xoom screen is fine, but not leading class. Samsung screens are highly overly saturated wrt colors; if you like that then great, but the colors are not accurate.
I'm in the UK and had the same choice when they dropped the prices... I went for Xoom...
very smooth with ICS on... SD card slot was the clincher! I have loaded cards up with movies and music... fixed memory and no expansion slot sux hugely!

this is why the xoom is probably the best tablet available, especially with another ICS update coming soon.
Plus touchwiz is extremly slow and laggy. I don't miss my 8.9 I am very satisfied with the xoom. No expandable memory was not a big deal, but at the same time it was. Now I can load up songs on my SD card and take he xoom in my car which saves on my phones battery. Plus if you play games 32 gigs will be more than enough for data. As far as development the 8.9 has like 3-4 roms, 1-2 honeycomb and 1-2 ICS (no working camera). For future updates I think the xoom will get JELLYBean because its still the only developer device until the nexus tablet in April, but that will also be a daul core. So I think we are safe for 1 more year. The 8.9 will be long gone and forgotten by the end of the year. One other cool thing it the Bluetooth keyboard and track pad made by Motorola and connecting the xoom to your flat screen is great. Its basically google TV but with all the apps.

dislike touchwhiz very much
love the value of the wifi xoom (1) get one from any region of your choosing and roll ICS onto it and youll have yourself one of the most capable tablets available

LOL, you are in a Xoom Forum, you know what we are gonna say!
Love the Xoom, wouldn't trade it for any other tab.
If you are going to root it and flash roms then the Xoom has a lot more development and I think it will continue to get lots of development support for a lot of years.
I have a Verizon Xoom and am running the teameos rom and it is amazing. My wife has a tab and it isn't terrible but the Xoom is a lot more fun when I can play with roms and overclock it etc.
Whenever I purchase an android device from now on I will always go with the device that had the most development.

not going to argue, but heavy is an indicator of build quality?
I dont think this is always the case.
Either way. you posted this in the Xoom forum, so you can expect certain responses.
The xoom 2 is a nice unit though. looks a little unusual with the tapered edges, but nicely weighted.

Trade xoom for note10.1?

After watching some demonstation of note10.1 , i really feel like to get one, if its not too pricey.
Anyway, can anyone give me some opinon about this?
I owned a razr, n after comparing with s2 (almost same spec), s2 is much more laggy than my razr due to the touchwiz ui.
But s3 seems better anyway.
I m using xoom with eos jellybean now n the speed is awesome, sometimes i might think that i m using a quad core device.
So is trade xoom for note10.1 a good choice?
Sry for my extremely bad English . I really need some suggestion

One thing that caught my eye is that aside from the Quad core processor, the Galaxy Note 10.1 is running on 2 GB of ram!

Same here, thats really awesome.
Somemore there r floating keyboard, s note calculation , floating video player etc, all these are really amazing features
I might pick one up just for the helluvit. I really like my sg note and my xoom, but I've also really gotten attached to the s-pen.
If Motorola doesn't get in gear and release a kick ass tablet to replace the xoom, I think its going to be hard for them to get back into the game.
EOS3 N130 @ MZ604 [XDA HD]
Stock ICS @ SGH-i717R [XDA Premium]
Just saw that the n8000 makes calls. Thia is a killer feature I've been waiting for on a 10.1 tablet. Maybe eos guys can pick one up in a bounty.... hint hint.
If kc, brd or solz gets one, I'm there too.

Originally I was dead set on replacing my Xoom with a Note 10.1, because some of the features sound really useful (such as side-by-side apps, pressure sensitive notes taking, etc).
But after reading the reviews yesterday... well it sounds really disappointing So I am going to wait for the coming software updates and price drops, before re-considering it.
The only thing about the Note that I like is stylus. The rest is pretty meh.
I'll wait another year before considering replacement. The Xoom has plenty of life left in it.
Mine arrives tomorrow... will test over the weekend and report back. I have and still do love my xoom and use it daily, but my GNote has convinced me of the value of the wacom digitizer technology. Should know by Monday whether its a realistic xoom replacement.

Waiting for ur report n pls tell us if the device is suitable for gaming.. in pics the corner of the device looks toothick to hold for gaming
what's this about being too thick... its bezel on the flanks is a bit wider, but that's for the speakers. And its around ~200grams lighter than our xoom.

Just opened the box so haven't even turned it on, yet... but does this pic of the corner edge (beside the xoom corner edge) help you?
Initial impression in the hand is pretty good. Not the tank that my xoom is (have always felt I could use it for personal protection if necessary), but not cheap-feeling either. A bit lighter and thinner than our xoom, but the bezel around the screen is larger meaning the entire device is a little taller and wider than our xoom despite the same functional screen size. I do think the weight loss and less sharp edges will make long sessions more comfortable.

Here is a shot of both from the front. It is a bit larger, but not much.
Early use has been positive. I was a little worried about the screen at first but then realized the autobrightness is darker than my taste in low-light settings. Setting brightness manually, the note's screen is brighter & clearer than the XOOM. It is also a warmer screen than XOOM. I never disliked XOOM's screen, but colors do seem truer on Note whereas they all had a coder bluish tint on XOOM'
The note is quite snappy ... I'm impressed. I've been running EOS JB on my XOOM, so wasn't thrilled about going back to ICS, but this HW makes ICS seem better than I remember it I suspect it will really prove itself on JB,or if we can get Eos on the case.
The coolest thing is that I've written this entire post with my S-pen. I have awful handwriting that meanders from print to cursive & back, but Note had almost no problems translating
Will have more time to put this thing through its paces tomorrow -buta good 1st impression!

tq very much =)
The note 10.1 will be awesome once custom ROMs like cm10 go on there to unleash the true power. Sucks that the s-pen is only fully compatible with Samsung based apps, hopefully app developers will make equivalents that support it.

Well, didnt get as much time to play on it today and dont have but a few minutes to update this thread - will try to add more detail tomorrow.
In summary, though, I am thoroughly impressed with this tablet. Notwithstanding that the EOS JB experience on my Xoom was unbelievably smooth and this ia a (hopefully short-term) step back to ICS, the Note makes it remarkably snappy and smooth.
S-pen functionality is great, and multitasking windows works well... little to no lag.
Battery life has been phenomenal (approaching 40 hrs with 7 screen on)... Ive posted a few screenshots of battery life. No problems with deep sleep.
Hopefully more tomorrow or Tuesday, but the short recommendation is to go get one.
