What's the hold up? - Thinkpad Tablet General

Is no one working on kernals or roms yet? I'm curious not *****ing. Don't own a k1 but almost bought one oon black Friday. Anyway this thing has been out for a bit now and I'm shocked to see nothing? Root is nice and so it cwm. Maybe I should pick one up and learn how to dev so but not risk bricking my a500 I use daily lol.
Why are devs not jumping on this device. Has nice specs and am I correct in saying unlocked bootloader?

It has been rooted for like 3 days now. Give it some time.

For real.? Man this has been out for a few months. Must not be to much interest with new tablets coming out
Sent from my INFUSE powered by ZEUS

it's out for month, but for working on rom and kernel, root is NEEDED !!
So as mandrsn1 has noticed it, root is just out. Must wait a little bit for some dev working on it.

Umm I almost bought one of black Friday that's 2 and a half month almost. But either way I'm just inquiring. And I'm not new to android I know root is needed.

It's not a glitz machine. Lenovo just isn't "hot." It's the laptops we all get from work. It's also more expensive than an iPad if you include the thing that sets it apart: the stylus. I'm noticing the Nooks are pretty hot, likely because they're so affordable. It's rooted now, and it should be an easy machine to work with. It'll come.

The Nook Color is cheap (I picked up 9 @$120 refurb black friday) and has unlocked bootloader + SD card booting. This makes it unbrickable (unless you drop it off a balcony) and easy to dev for. One of the mods in the Nook Color forums was forcing people to compile their own ICS so they would learn how to do it (and tons of people did so using his instructions). The K1 is now being discontinued so I doubt it will have too much in the way of rom development.

Lack of development

I'm disappointed that there isn't much development going on for the Thrive. I'm also curious as to why? I bought one after doing major comparison between all the tablets available and I chose this one because of the specs, size and of course, capabilities. My friends have other tablets, such as the Acer 500 and I rooted it last night for him and it's nowhere near the speed of my Thrive.
I guess I'll just have to wait it out but damn, I want a new ROM on this already. Just having it rooted isn't enough to take advantage of even a fraction of the capabilities this thing has.

I think a lot of it has to do with the lack of developers having the device. I think if I had one I would probably be putting something together - but I have the Transformer - and no time at the present.
There has been ROM development, just not here.
Google thrive forums to see.

I did and not too impressed with what I've seen. I think there are what, 3 ROMS available? I'm going to keep this but get the Acer A500 I think since it has tons of development right now.
Thanks for the replies!

I was in the same boat so to say my first choice was the thrive I happily bought it after much consideration of other tablets on the market at the time .. once I got home I enjoyed the speed and the thrives native apps but I went to XDA to se what was popping and nothing lol a dead tablet on the development front.so I tried the Asus liked the screen but didn't want to pat $160 u.s. for USB and extra battery life so i bought my Iconia and ill tell ya what I freaking love it besides some problems with Gameloft apps but usb HDMI micro SD I'm happy and amazing veiwing angles!

Well I have the thrive and it is rooted and has a OC Kernel and Dalepl's stock rom, am I sorry that it does not have some great rom on it, NO it is quite functional and is twice the tablet of any Acer Iconia, and just to be clear I HAVE HAD a Acer Iconia, Motorola Xoom and the Almighty Samsung and all lasted less than a week before returning them, have had my thrive since release and could not be more pleased, and all of the substandard tabs are gone!!!!
I waited in line on black Friday for the Asus transformer because it has a large development scene, but they ran out and I ended up with the Toshiba for $30 more. I've got to day, for what I paid, the Toshiba is cool, but I wish I could get some cyanogen on here.

same here. Love the size and Honeycomb. Have a Samsung galaxy tab 7" and wanted something bigger and newer. Made the mistake of upgrading to 3.2.1 and was hoping the great minds of XDA have figured out how to downgrade to root. Kind of disappointed on the development but maybe we weren't the only ones who went to buy the Transformer and ended up with the thrive. Only time will tell.
Don't know why this thing isn't more popular. Just got mine the other day. So far I love the fact that I can plug in the dongle from my computers wireless keyboard and an hdmi cable to my big screen tv, pair it to a wii remote and have at it. Absolutely awesome!

There is a lot more for it but not on this Forum, I would just say Google the thrive and the other forum will come up in search results and yes there is plenty of Development going on. I cannot put the forum's name here because they will just delete the name if not my complete post.
Yeah, I'm a recovering rom-flasher myself, and I was initially kind of bummed out at the fact that there are not dozens of choices for ROMs, but then I got to asking myself "Why?"
I have Cyanogen 7 on my HTC LEO, and I can flash a new version every week if I want, or if I get tired of that, there are many other ROMS I can choose from. But for the Tablet, I'm looking for a stable portable platform to read forums, e-books, maybe play a few games. The Thrive fills that bill, and the hardware is more versatile than most other tablets out there. I rooted the stock 3.1 ROM so I could use Titanium Backup and nmap, and I don't think I'll upgrade until Ice Cream Sandwich comes out, if then. 3.2 seems to be mostly for 7" tablets so it doesn't interest me much.
I see that there are other ROMS on those "unmetnionable" forums, but I've learned over the years to trust the developers and forums at XDA so I don't really want to take a chance elsewhere.
That's my two cents' worth and if you don't agree, I applaud you - enjoy flashing whatever you can find - it's a lot of fun, and I will continue to do so on my HTC phone, but not on my tablet. Just my opinion.

I think it will be picking up speed soon. Compared to other tablets on the market right now, spec wise, the Thrive is pure ownage! I still have mine and use it frequently. I'm cool with just having it rooted for now so we'll see what happens in the future for development.

Well then you will lose out because the Thrive on XDA will soon be dead and those of us on the other forum will have everything we want on our tablets and thank god that crap cyanogen is not on the thrive!!!!
Performance! But....
I have purchased two of these devices.... One 16G and one 8G. Both ate verymooth and perform very nicely.
Even though Im enjoying the units, I still believe that there should become level of focus on these units. Toshiba now has these units up to V3.3 and have things locked down tightly. Though I believe they did a nice job on the stock ROM, I still believe there should be a root option to admonisyer my personal device. I also believe that the collective brain trust of XDA could produce a ROM that shows the true capability of this hardware platform.
One of the coolest features of the 10.1 inch units is that it has a user replacable battery! How cool is that??
Im not a programmer and barely qualify as a script kiddie in this day of age. So like others on this forum, I have to wait for those with the knowledge and motivation to provide the future path and direction.

Great! Custom work is what we need to round off this thing. Do you do kernel work by chance?
I have the Thrive 10.1" and Thrive 7" and if you have looked at my work, I mainly keep it stock. That is what I like and I have a lot of people who like that. If you need base ROMs, feel free to download and use mine.
By the way, sorry if you thought you affended me. Was not wanting you to think that. Just wanted you to know why I do what I do and where. Cheers

Mine just arrived I like it so far but updating from 3.1 is causing me some serious grief.
I understand that you have to do a manual flash to update it before you can get the auto online update to work. The soot thrives ate shipping with very old (2nd Gen) BIOS that need/require the manual update

Where can I get the manual updates? I have searched high and low.
Dev Thrive
I bought one of these, the device itself is great. One big problem...
It appears as though my thrive was a dev thrive. It has a custom rom and kernal on it. No android market or google apps at all. At first I figured I would just root it and put one of dalepl's custom roms on it. I was afraid to do so though, because in reading about how to root, it was very clear to only use the root tool with certain build numbers and mine is clearly not. Whatever is loaded on it, seems to be fairly stable and very fast...although it does go to sleep at times and will not wake back up. Has anybody heard of something like this happening?
You need to return this device. There is no way to update that load. It should never had been sent out with that load. The partitions are not standard and you cannot root it or load a custom ROM onto it.
I contacted Woot that day about returning it. They told me they had some in stock so they will be sending me a new one. It was interesting to say the least. Someone at Toshiba must have missed it!
Yes, I have talked to a few others that have received devices with the engineering load. I am supprized that Toshiba had let these slip out too. Not too supprised that a couple of Woot ones have it. These are remanufactured, but guess what, not by Toshiba. They have out sourced thier maintenance, so it is some outside company doing them. The tech probably checked that it booted and repacked it.
I almost jumped on that woot! Impulsive instincts were driving me to order one. I think the thrive has a lot of potential in the future. I'll stick with the cheaper hp touchpad for now and wait for tablet wars 2.0 this year for the shakeup before diving into a serious tablet with some horsepower.
I received my Thrive from Woot a couple weeks ago. I wasn't even looking for a tablet, but couldn't pass it up. This is my first tablet, and so far its pretty awesome. Glad to see there is a thread for it here.
Well thrive may be nice and for that kind of price its ok. (Tho i prefere my Toshiba Folio i acquired as 1st android tablet for 100$ in fact I love Toshiba brand... xD and the fact T device have a very good price/quallity rapport even on second hand)
Now brainstorming on: Foliomod 1.4 or waiting on a working ICS port (T device deserve waaayyy more love then they get atm :'( )

Wow. I just saw like a BUNCH of names, specifically in the ICS Passion thread, that a had about 12+ posts, and joined this month.
Is this device still that popular? I had expected this device to easily die off by 2012, but then neobuddy came by and dropped his ICS, which got everything back up, and now theres all these new users.

I am very happy that I bought this phone in July 0f 2010. I was not happy with the broken GPS and laggy performance of 2.1, but if it was not for the phone's problems and my frustrations with waiting for a fix from Samsung I never would have discovered XDA. If you think about it, these same problems presented a challenge to the dev community, it became an ongoing project that became fun and brought together a real "community" around the Vibrant. Now we are all enjoying ICS on an "obsolete" phone. Amazing! Thank you Team Whiskey for Bionix, Einherjar for Trigger, (I never used any GB Roms because I use GPS a lot) and now I have Neobuddy to thank for fully working GPS with ICS....
I was reading another thread tonight started by someone who hard bricked his Vibrant and called T-Mo for a replacement. They told him they were not supporting the Vibrant anymore and he was very bummed. He was persistent however and was overjoyed when T-Mo sent him a Vibrant. A few more people chimed about how Vibrants are not as easy to get now.
Like I said, a great community!
I think a lot of old users are upgrading and so there's a fair amount of used Vibrants on the market for a good price. Buy a used phone with no warranty and naturally the first thing to do is mod it
I bought a Vibrant just because of ICS Passion...and the fact that the HTC Sensation doesn't have an AMOLED screen.

Got mine for $180 off eBay. It was already rooted with CM7 and unlocked. Only downside is that the battery was sort of drained (solved by an Anker battery for $12 though) and there's some bumps and scratches on the bezel.
There's also a seller selling a brand new one for $300 rooted and unlocked. It's a great deal compared to even some of the newest phones out there.
I'm an avid Vibrant users and I've been using XDA for quite some time. I hate the new posting rules but I can deal. And ICS is really sweet as ICS(s)
I have had my Vibe since Oct 2010, I have been looking for a new phone and really want a Nexus but will not buy new without warranty. Right now I am quite happy with my Vibrant but really want a bigger screen with higher resolution. I also want to be able to turn the GPS radio on and off without having resident process draining the battery. Before anyone says go back to a 2.2 or 2.1 ROM, I just can't do it. I have tried but I just can't go back to an early OS build. I can't even go back to a GB ROM since I have had ICS. All earlier OS builds just feel to antiquated. To me it would be like going back to Windows 98 because there are a few DOS based games that don't run in Windows 7 X64.
With that said, I can fully understand why we have new users. The Vibrant is still leagues better than any new mid-range devices and can run toe to toe with all but the Newest High End phones that came out late Winter last year. I will be sad when giving up this very trustworthy device when I finally do. My wife will get it after me so at least it will stay in the household.

I am suprised too, its a great phone, but before ics came out it was pretty quiet around here. Its still the same old question though, how much farther can the vibrant go? Im hanging on to mine, no telling what might leak.

Solid device
I've had a vibrant since December 2010. Found one for myself and my girlfriend from shady backstreet dealers in Houston for $230 and a brand spanking new one for $250 . I've been flashing it since shortly after I received it. Bionix was solid. I was a bit disappointed with 2.3 roms in general and then ICS passion came out. It is the best ROM I've ever used hands down. I've yet to see the stutter that sometimes accompanied 2.2 and 2.3 roms. Apps maybe take a tiny bit longer to load than on CM7 but the general interface is so damn smooth it makes the occasional app launching non-problematic.
Now if only Swype would get updated to be compatible with ics...

Anyone working on an AOSP rom?

I know its really early in the developement for this awesum tablet, but has anyone heard of any forthcoming AOSP roms for this guy?
I havent flashed any of the existing custom roms out there yet, waiting for a fully working TWRP first, but, once that happens, I know I will be flashing away, and I think an AOSP rom for this tab would run incrediblly fast and smooth...

I don't think its early- look at the galaxy s4... Its just not a popular tablet yet. Its too expensive and will never see the following of the n7. Development is just flat out slow or non existent.
I could be wrong, but I don't have much hope for a fun rom-flashing experience on this tablet, its just a solid work horse and does great as-is for what it is.
I think we will see some ported ROMs, just not too much. I doubt we will see much AOSP, considering you lose some of the features of this tablet.

Since the p1000 this is the first device witch has the thinks I want
The last year's I had p1000 and now the n5100 for everything smartphone, tablet, everything.
There were a lot of people on the p1000 forum and android development.
I can't believe that only a few people are now here.
The p1000 was about 650 Euro and the n5100 500 Euro.so it's not really expensive.
Sorry for my bad English
Sadly, development for the Note seems to be almost dead
I had a N10 before and loved flashing roms on it, Paranoid was my favorite . Now with the Note 8 i find that im so happy with it and what it does that i dont miss not having a ROM to flash.
The only thing i use is Nova Luncher and i unlocked it of course to be able to do nice things like increase multi window capabilities and get more out of the SD card and speakers.
I olso had an Ipad 2 before. And i can say with confidence that this is the best and more practical table i have ever owned!

AFAIK there aren't any devs that can port CM, AOKP, etc. I attempted on doing it but...I found it more difficult than I thought. So, I gave up lol. Hopefully in the future a dev can shed some light on this tablet.
Yeah, it really is a shame... I thought a nearly-stock device with an unlocked bootloader would've attracted many devs to this device, but alas, six months later and there's not a single custom ROM, not even a tweaked version of the stock ROM. Half the reason I bought the thing was because I thought it would be very popular with devs.
Still noting on this front.
I think its a crying shame, the device has so much potential and resources.
Am hopfully going to get mine fixed under wanrranty hoping they don't see the big red warranty void when they get it now its re-locked. I'm using it for in the car as i've just got the Xperia Z2 tablet, Set that up while in the bath... true story. I love it already but I didn't get and probably won't ever get the same buzz as the TN7 when setting it up hoping that one day we would have a full list of roms to play with till our hearts where content
