Anyone working on an AOSP rom? - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) General

I know its really early in the developement for this awesum tablet, but has anyone heard of any forthcoming AOSP roms for this guy?
I havent flashed any of the existing custom roms out there yet, waiting for a fully working TWRP first, but, once that happens, I know I will be flashing away, and I think an AOSP rom for this tab would run incrediblly fast and smooth...
thanks if any one knows of any WIP..

I don't think its early- look at the galaxy s4... Its just not a popular tablet yet. Its too expensive and will never see the following of the n7. Development is just flat out slow or non existent.
I could be wrong, but I don't have much hope for a fun rom-flashing experience on this tablet, its just a solid work horse and does great as-is for what it is.

I think we will see some ported ROMs, just not too much. I doubt we will see much AOSP, considering you lose some of the features of this tablet.

Since the p1000 this is the first device witch has the thinks I want
The last year's I had p1000 and now the n5100 for everything smartphone, tablet, everything.
There were a lot of people on the p1000 forum and android development.
I can't believe that only a few people are now here.
The p1000 was about 650 Euro and the n5100 500 Euro.so it's not really expensive.
Sorry for my bad English

Sadly, development for the Note seems to be almost dead

I had a N10 before and loved flashing roms on it, Paranoid was my favorite . Now with the Note 8 i find that im so happy with it and what it does that i dont miss not having a ROM to flash.
The only thing i use is Nova Luncher and i unlocked it of course to be able to do nice things like increase multi window capabilities and get more out of the SD card and speakers.
I olso had an Ipad 2 before. And i can say with confidence that this is the best and more practical table i have ever owned!

Loving this tablet; when did you get yours?
We're just about to get a fully functional TWRP for this bad boy, and once that happens, I think things will pick up...
yeah, I guess you lose quite a bit on a tablet if you are running AOSP roms...hopefully, some more TW stuff gets ported over..

i like the HTC one, good solid feeling device, has 4.2.2 sense already, yeah they play the boot loader game but they got s-off the day i picked it up, so unlocked boot loader, root and super CID all in one shot, plus samsung s4 on AT&T has locked boot loader now too. i dont miss my note honestly, a bit smaller , but comfortable in my hand. so i dont miss it, plus having this makes up for it if i did!

HTC Rezound thoughts?

So I see that the HTC Rezound dropped down to $50 today, and I've been looking for a cheap 4g phone that isn't the stratosphere. This "looks" like a good deal, except I know absolutely nothing about HTC phones.
The beats audio thing looks pointless to me, but does anyone have any thoughts on the rest of the phone? I am entirely clueless about this so any insight is appreciated.
Thanks

the rezound is a good phone. with an unlocked bootloader, 4g, hd screen and htc, its a good upgrade. plus you could even sell the earbuds and make all your money back id say go for it if you dont mind a phone on the thicker side lol
it's a nice phone, especially at that price. good specs, nice HD screen (though not amoled so not quite as vibrant) and fast data. I'd recommend it, especially with the ics upgrade coming in a few days.

Coming from someone who really doesn't enjoy touchwiz at all, is sense enjoyable to use? It doesn't look like the Rezound has any ICS source which worries me, but maybe I'm more worried than I should be because Samsung destroyed my confidence in custom skins?
I might just have to get my AOSP fix from my Gtab, but I'm also just realizing how awesome the Fascinate is.
Thanks again!

being that i came from an htc eris, i can say sense is nice but laggy...and samsungs are still about the easiest to mod. unfortnately ICS source would have to be out before i would make the switch...gingerbread blowz!
Hardware wise, it's a pretty good phone for $50. I personally wouldn't be interested in it since (sorry to be harsh) but AOSP development looks... less than promising. Wouldn't be terribly interested in sense. There will be official ICS soon, but it's with sense 3.6, not version 4, which looks like the only decent iteration of sense in ages.

It looks like all they need is s-off (which from what I can see is very close to being completed) to gain access to the nand partition, and ICS kernel source.
So I guess I need to find out if HTC is good about releasing kernel source, if they are I might just pick this up.
4G tethering to my tablet is just so tempting...om nom nom!
if you like sense (or think you might), its probably worth getting
i wouldnt your breath for aosp though as they dont have any experienced aosp guys who own the phone or are working on it
really though being tied to that phone for 2 years might be kinda rough imo...id soldier on and wait for any news on either a better htc (hopefully a one series) or the sgs3 and try and pick up a charge on the cheap on craiglist ebay (cant be more than 125 these days) if you need lte

Get it then! It's arguably the best phone on Verizon. Dual core. Hd screen. Unlockable bootloader. One of the best cameras. You really can't go wrong. You can wait it out for a better phone (gs3 or HTC one series), but don't get your hopes up. Good luck and choose well because you only have 24 hours. Plus try to use amazon wireless. Free shipping no tax some extra free apps and I got a free car charger!

Honestly I've been using aosp on my phone ever since I got my inc2. sense is too ugly and boring for me but it's just my opinion. Also, they aren't much faster at updating phones than Samsung. I would wait for Galaxy Note variant if there's one ever or sgs3.

Ya you pretty much nailed the two reason I haven't bought it yet.
1.) No AOSP, and they're getting ICS delayed over and over.
2.) Tegra 3...om nom nom...it's worth the wait.

They are working on RIL for CM9. Once that gets worked out (and they do have experienced AOSP guys working it), and ICS kernel source drops it'll be done. From what I understand, there are quite a few devs that are ready to start working on the Rezound when the s-off method is released.
For everyone bagging on sense, it really is a matter of opinion and taste. I'm running a Sense 4.0 Rom that was just released today and it is really nice. Still needs some work and polish, but it is running very well. It's funny, a lot of people complain about Sense being ugly, but it is amazing how many people want to run an AOSP Rom but also have a lot of the Sense widgets like the flip/weather clock and animations, and Friend Stream (which I personally can't stand), and the app drawer. Personally, I like both and think they both have their strengths and weaknesses.
What AOSP devs do they have and what's the status of S-OFF?

dmeadows3,synisterwolf, and droidvicious (MIUI) are two that I know of. Plus two awesome devs that usually work on Sense Rom's (Joelz and newtoroot) I believe said that they are going to contribute to the RIL issues too.
As for S-Off, last week globatron and his team did a very short closed beta on a method for S-off and successfully attained s-off on several peoples rezounds. We are just waiting for them to get it ready for prime-time and then we're golden.
I can't wait for CM9 and Miui v4 on this phone to be honest.
Nice, hopefully things speed up from this point and they can get some good AOSP development. Without solid AOSP rom support, it'll be hard for me to upgrade.
I suppose I just thought it was funny how a bunch of rezound people were talking about how much greater the rezound is than the nexus, "wait until we have CM9, this thing will spank the nexus!". This was like 5 months ago when the phones were coming out (and still no AOSP), but I still see comments like that. I don't really care since I don't have either device, just thought it was mildly amusing. Not saying AOSP roms won't happen, but most of the people you mentioned port sense roms, which as I understand, is a different animal then building from source.
Hopefully they can get the RIL figured out.

iPhone 4s to galaxy note

Hi. Introduce me. Im an apple fanboy since 2004, and i owned everything apple produced from mac to iDevices.
Been using iphone all my life until the 4s. It's a great phone but lacking bigger screen.
So i decided to buy a galaxy note because im amazed by the big screen and high resolution of the display.
From my first day use, i regretted buying an android device because my galaxy note seemed lagging even doing something simple like scrolling a website.
Then enter the xda forum and i heard only good things about rooting and installing ics stunner.
It took me 2 days to learn about it and i finnaly managed to installed it on my brand new note.
Boy i couldn't be happier. This rom makes android much smoother, though iphone 4s is a bit smoother but u wouldn't mind since the small screen of iphone makes it unpleasant to use.
Lucky i already got the ipad 3 to play games on it because devs seem to make games on app store alot, much much more than in google's appstore, so i don't need a phone to play games anymore.
That's why i switched to android, oh the openness is amazing, you can set default apps for some tasks, share everything so easy to fb, twitter, whatsapp, etc etc, customization. Good lord where have i been all my life.
Thanks for reading my experience.

welcome ;D
At the moment i have galaxy note and had ipod touch 4g ( sold one week ago) i didnt like ios 5.1 because it had a lot of limitations, for example i even couldnt made battery percentage without jailbreak and etc. Thats why i have sold ipod because of too limited operating system. With my first android device i thought damn android is so difficult but after some months it become for me the best OS ;D just need some time to get used with android ;D
Yeah Android isn't quite as smooth as iOS yet, but you get a lot more functionality/openness in return. I should warn you that all (I think) ICS ROMs use leaked kernels which are known to have a risk of bricking, especially when wiping/flashing. And probably when handling large files as well. Look up Entropy512's posts for more info.
I flashed the DAFUQ kernel with PC Odin after hearing about this. Still using Stunner but now more safely. It's kinda buggy now, though, but still beats going back to Gingerbread in my book.
Well, besides the other benefits of the switch, you can now tell your apple friends ( I would be one, and say this too) that you have the only retina display device with a wacom tablet digitizer under it.
Welcome to the Android family, adichandra! Nice to see you here & I wish you a lot of fun with your note!
Like the preposter has already mentioned: the leaked LP kernels are not that safe atm and may harm your emmc...I LOVED stunner as well (it is a HELL of a rom^^), but due to some bad experiences by other users I switched back to Gingerbread (just for the next few weeks, I´m sure that the next leak/official ICS is in the pipeline).
A more secure alternative may be XplodWilDs CM9, which is here on the board as well. But if you want to switch, read the OP carefully --> you should go back to GB before flashing!
He is right, Xplod CM9 is more safe than the leaked version. Im using it now and ver satisfy with it!

Once official ICS comes out with a an official kernel, things will really start to ramp up here as far as development. But even on Gingerbread, my phone is almost as fluid as an iPhone 4S, since I keep very minimal apps on the phone. I only download an app if I can't do the same function on the browser and I don't really game on my phone. So far, the Note has been the best phone I have owned and I can't wait to see what Samsung has in store for the Galaxy S III since that technology is what we'll see in the Note 2.
Welcome to android family.
I guess im the only 1 that doesnt think ios is extremly smooth. Wife ip4s lags like any newer android device.

thanks for the warm welcome.
about those who experienced a bad luck with their note getting bricked, is it suddenly getting bricked when im using it or is it bricking when im flashing to the stunner's upcoming updates?.
let's say if im sticking with the current rom and not doing any flashing at all, is it going to brick my device too when let's say while im browsing?

Hehe, don´t be too scared mate This is the point: It may happen that the kernel is messing with your device when you start to move big files OR when wiping...just search for posts from Entropy512 (who seems to be the most eloquent guy when it comes to this topic ) or matius44 (who summed up Entropy512´s posts quite often as well).
If you take a closer look to the stunner & imilka threads (etc), it is obvious that there are MANY ICS (repack) user who are NOT suffering of any kind of emmc damage (yet?). So the probability seems quite low to brick your device. But there is a propability, there have been a bunch of people e.g. last week, who had to handle the fact that there device is dead.
So in my case: I didn´t want to take the risk to mess up my 600$ device, for this reason I switched back a few days ago.
It is everyones own choice - this is a developer forum and it will always be connected with risks to flash ROMs For me, the risk seems to be higher with the repack stuff, so I will wait.
EDIT & OT: yeey, 400 posts counting^^

Nope! It wont brick suddenly when your not doing any flashing. It will only brick if you flash it wrong or as they said not proper flashing. Just follow each guide in flashing from the thread starter and there wont be any problem.

Yup. Flashing from the repack (more specifically, doing any form of a wipe from a repack - and flashing this wipes /system first) may only hardbrick a small percentage of users - 1%? 3%? 10%? - We don't know.
What we do know is:
1) Some users can flash all they want without hardbricking - but you don't know if you're in this category until you've found out the hard way that you're not
2) Some users can flash/wipe a few times but eventually will hardbrick. Just because you flashed once without bricking doesn't mean flash #2 isn't going to kill you
3) Some users, like xplodwild, will just hardbrick the first time they attempt to wipe or flash anything from a leak repack recovery
I'm going to talk to the moderators about giving infractions to anyone else who says they flashed safely from an existing repack - because that misleads other users into thinking they're safe too which is NOT TRUE. See items 1 and 2 above.

A lot of people will tell you how they flashed fine etc etc but you never know if that next system wipe will go through..
So you have to ask yourself "Do I feel lucky?"

Switched back from Galaxy S3 to S2!

Hey guys! I think this is my first post ever on XDA. But ive been a lurker for years.
I just got my Galaxy s3 last week and after playing with it for a few days I ended up switching back to my Galaxy S2. Cannot stand the new touchwiz! I think this forum has made me an addict of custom roms and kernels! Thus why I'm sticking to the Galaxy S2.
But I'm getting the feeling that with buying android phones is not about how new the device is but how mature the software is. I would rather buy an device 4-6 months post launch to have root and lots of stable custom roms. Learned my lesson with the S3. Guess its going back into the box and waiting 3-4 more months before really going ROM crazy with the phone.
Am I the only one?

No offence but I don't get it what so great about siyah, bunch of bricks, yesterday I tried it first time and it gives random reboots.....
On stock I get easy till mid night, what's the use if I get another 2 hours when I had to plug it anyway before sleep.
And the phone is fast no issues....
even the cm9 gives me 9 hours easy on stock kernel.

So if I get you right you dropped the fully pre-launch rootable S3 because you didn't like TouchWiz? So installing something like SiyahKernel and Apex Launcher was to much hassle? As far as ROMs are concerned you already have a few to choose from.

No offence but I don't get it what so great about siyah, bunch of bricks, yesterday I tried it first time and it gives random reboots.....
On stock I get easy till mid night, what's the use if I get another 2 hours when I had to plug it anyway before sleep.
And the phone is fast no issues....
even the cm9 gives me 9 hours easy on stock kernel.

siyah is in experimental stage
you flash it at your own risk
but it ease the process of developing roms
you can flash your experimental rom as the 2nd rom without worrying about a brick
the "bunch of bricks" is samsungs fault not siyahs
A troll? Um ok... welcome I guess...
But yea i did try out the other launchers and I still didnt like it. Apex is the one I tried.
I really wanted what they have in CM9 which lets me toggle brightness right from the notification bar.
Anyways maybe once CM9 is out for the Galaxy S3 I will give it another shot.
But seriously should have waited for the christmas discounts before buying the phone. Meanwhile its back to the S2

Try Apex launcher and enjoy ur new phone lol.
But this is one of the reasons i will wait buying an S3. In a few months time the price will drop and there will be more roms.
I'm the developer of SaNgO Vizion ( Custom rom ), and I want to develop on the GS3.
But there is a problem, the price of the phone.
You know, I think there is a lot of developer like me, who want to develop and know what they must do to mod, but the price is too expensive.
I'm only 16, so you see, it's hard to find 600euros...
It's why I ask for donations in my thread .
I think it's one of the big reason of why there is no mod actually.
Have a good day, and sorry for my english.
I plan on Getting a S3 but not for another 6 months, I made the mistake when the orginal Galaxy S came out, bought it right away and had a few problems with it at the time, I waited 6 months for the GS2 i'll wait again for the S3, by then loads of custom roms & hopefully a stable ICS to work from, plus it be cheaper aswell and Pebble blue will be very easy to get hold off.
I got my SGS2 just as it was available and was happy with it, but this because I had before the Nexus One and I didn't flashed custom ROM's at this time.
Now I flash neary every week and I would miss it when I would get SGS3 now.
Also memory with 16GB is not sufficent for me, min. is 32GB, even I can extend it by mirco SD, internal memory could be not big enough.
roms
Hi was just wondering what is some good roms to run with gs2 ?

The two most impressive ones in my opinion is Cyanogenmod 9 and MIUI. But every other rom has its different set of customizations and abilities.

custom roms
Hi fairly new with android device. Currently using gs2 skyrocket and looking for good custom roms.Any ideas?
I want to buy one S3, but i'll wait a little longer (at least until the last quarter of the year).
I bought my S2 a month after the release, its my first smart phone.
S3 looks good, but S2 still robust, i have ICS NEE XWLPG installed and with some modifications, my batery last up three days with intense use of internet and aplications.
I doubt S3 do something like that
S2 is the best phone ever! however, I will buy S3 once it's available in my country
Yep!
S3 = S2 +2 Cores, and bigger screen. More bloated Operating system than ever.
Do not worth spending my money on it, and it looks ugly and cheap in my opinion.
But that's still my opinion!

You're in the wrong place, mate.

Moving onto the Samsung GS3

After an amazing turn of events, I just won an international version of the sgs3 and when it arrives, I'll probably be rooting and using the sgs3 as my new phone.
I would have to say that my experience with the DZ has its ups and downs (I'm looking at your stupid hinge design and the need for new springs HTC), but it was a fantastic phone.
I wish HTC would come out with another top of the line qwerty phone but alas, it probably wont happen anyways since their lackluster attempts.
I guess I'll be in this forum for not that much longer which is a sad thing because the dev community here is really really amazing...
Congrats

I'd also really appreciate hearing about your experiences with the S-III. One of my sons just got one but he is not technologically inclined at all and won't be doing anything out of the ordinary to his, even though I'm itching to get my hands on it!
thx
p-d
I used Odin to root. Was so simple. They have two recoveries for now. I use cwm for now but they have another touch based recovery called trwp (I think spelling)
The battery life is great, right after I rooted they came out with another ics update. I immediately put it on my phone via flashing through cwm and kept root through a dev name wildchld. Upgraded radio through a flash in cwm and stayed on the uvlah Rom for a couple of days. Couldnt help myself and that same dev has a Rom called exqisit and flashed it and been on it every since. They have and odex.apk from Paul obrien, so odexed it and it's as smooth as butter. Got 20 hrs of heavy use yesterday!! The leak jellybean is out from Samsung but I want to hold out as long as possible and play with ics some more.
Having a great time with this phone though. Loved my g2, but this is on another level, as would be expected. Getting used to touchwiz and no hw keyboard is interesting but quite easier then I thought it would be. The screen is HUGE!! All in all I'm very happy.

Well, if I recall correctly, the international gs3 may be quad core. The Tmo US version isn't, that I do know. So I'm now on a black sgs2, since it was half the price of the 3 at target and had almost the specs. (Sure the sgs3 has lte, but that doesn't matter much where I live.) Will be updating the g2 to jb soon since I just updated the sgs3 to it. That way the fallback phone won't be too jarring if I need it.

The international GS3 has quad core and 1GB RAM the US model has 2GB RAM and Dual core. I bought a G2 in July off contract for $150 since my dad won't get me a data plan or texting -_-

this is such a sweet thing to know.. I'm definitely going to have to start reading on rooting guides and also roms to go for. I don't think i'll be liking touchwiz so I would probably be pushing for a vanilla ICS or JB.. then maybe get a sense like theme over it (I like how sense has a big phone button on the bottom)
btw, do you guys recommend a case or a skin for the phone? I have the skin but i keep on getting annoyed that eventually it gets peeled off and no company makes a skin that fits perfectly.. some even have like a 2 mm gap on each side which drives me nuts
I have an otterbox, but I'm not really digging it that much. Doesn't feel real secure to me but is doing the job.

I'm wondering if I will not replace my DZ with a GS3 too... right now, I don't have the money to spend, but when I will, I really hope (but don't really believe ) there will be another physical keyboard device released here in Europe (France)... But I know I might have to take a full touch device, because every manufacturers are doing this, iPhone-like smartphones... And the GS3 seems to be one of the best of them!
Mine is wearing a transparant TPU case, fits perfectly
niice... Well I ended up just buying a metal insert battery backing and a screen protector.
That should cover the important parts.
I'm currently trying out omega's rom with nova launcher... so far so good. Any rom suggestions?

Wrong move?

Should I be getting paranoid that the developer support of this device is very slow out of the gate? The hardware is great and beats everything else I tried, but now with S-Off out there for the One on VZW, I am getting worried that I chose poorly.

I am talking from my experience with the G Pro. There are Roms but really all those CM based Roms or other ones are all weak compared to the stock based Roms. U loose so many features with those costume Roms. From dual shot camera and video to quick note to smart screen and smart video to some other great features u only have on stock ROM. U basically gonna cripple ur G2 if u use a costume ROM.

OMG another one of these threads that has been answered over and over. If you don't like the current developer support on the G2, then return it. I find it funny that the people that always ask starts these topics are smart enough to find XDA forums to look for development but yet don't look around in the General and Development threads to gauge for themselves on whether it has enough developer support for that phone to them.
How soon do people except a custom ROM besides just a debloated stock ROM in the first few weeks? Since its clear that you are not a developer and don't understand that you can't just whip out pre-alpha custom ROMs that will crash people's phones and it takes time to do this stuff. Remember that the developers are not paid to do this stuff and do this as a hobby. If you can't deal with patience than get the GS4 or the HTC One.

This thread happens with every new phone lol! O.P even the phones you want to exchange with this one at some point had threads just like this one right before ROMS became available
2 roms is far from other if support. A few tweaks. Nothing to write home about. No OEM accessories except for one overpriced case.
Sorry, but coming from a long line of custom roms on devices I have a higher expectation for my roms. And those CM or AOKP types blow stock out of the water and add tons of other features that outperform the stock.

Sounds like the OP is the typical "user" anymore. For some reason even tjo they have no idea the amount of work that goes into building a rom or a kernel or mod, they just somehow feel entitled to get it when they want it. Guess what dude, had HTC ONE on release day , and development was slower than the G2 is. Want a rom when you want it.....build it yourself . this **** aint easy, if it was youd be building a rom instead of *****ing about it.

Don't know what to say since you feel entitled to have 20 custom ROMs a week after release. If you are so compelled to want custom ROMs, why don't you try developing one and contributing instead of complaining. You seem way too paranoid about developer support for a phone for someone that contributes nothing to the development scene. Most of us are just grateful that we have volunteer developers that want to develop ROMs for the LG G2. I don't demand but rather appreciate all the hard work that they do when they feel ready to release it. I understand that making a ROM is not a walk in the park or else everyone would be doing it.
My advice to you....get a GS4 or HTC One. It has 20 billion custom ROMs that you can flash to your heart's desire right now.

It hasn't even been a full month yet, and we have a decent amount of mods and a couple ROMs already. That's nothing to scoff at by any sort of reasonable standard. Slow your roll, bro.

Phone rarely even gets warm ,not hot.
Camera is really great
Quick Remote is great as well
Im satisfied with stock rom for once. lol
battery is INSANE checkout post #76 screenshots , no way thatll happen on the ONE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470564&page=8
I've owned plenty of popular flagship devices and even though they have plenty of ROM selection, I've found them to be very similar to each other so I only chose between two or three different ones as my daily driver... So ROM selection is usually over rated based on all the copycat ROM available.
I personally enjoyed my time more with the smaller and unpopular devices that had fewer ROM's at first but then development picked up. Which I think will be the case with this phone.

I'm very happy with this phone and the activity in the development community so far. The only two major things I would like to see happen in the future is a port of 4.4 and of 5.0 when they eventually are released into the wild. I don't have much faith in LG but with the new nexus phone so similar I'd imagine this will be done.
