Screen crapped out within a week. - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Had my Note for exactly one week when yesterday I woke up, turn on my Note and notice a big green line going down the left side of the screen. The rest of the screen is now very dim and barely readable even with the screen brightness cranked up to the max. Did battery pull, then factory reset with no success. Never dropped the phone, I haven't rooted the phone, the only thing I did to it was apply the OTA update to 2.36 the day I got it. Everything else is stock, so it seems to be a hardware issue.
Got the Note through a 3rd party reseller on Amazon.com. When I called them about it they said I had to go thru Samsung warranty and they will only exchange the item if it was broken the first time I tried to turn it on. So I guess I'm on my own.
Called Samsung warranty and was told that since it was an international phone it is not supported by Samsung USA. So it appears I am SOL.
ExpansysUSA on the other hand has a 15 day return policy for any issues and they will help you deal with warranty after the 15 day window is up.
Needless to say I'm depressed...Any suggestions for a course of action is appreciated.
Thanks everybody.

only thing i can think of is if you can still get a squaretrade warranty. I think you may have to wait 60 days before they'll accept a claim, but it may be a better option than having an expensive paper weight.

Ask the seller where he purchased the phone from, ship your Note to Samsung in the country of origin. If he bought it in HK, send it to samsung in HK.
They won't be able to tell you it's an international purchase, you are allowed to travel the world with your phone and keep your warranty.

I agree. I had a Polish version from hantec. It had about 3 dead pixels with a line going through them (green colour). Called up Samsung UK and they said I had to contact handtec.
IM sure if you call up the skewing branch where your note is from, you can always send it back to them to get a replacement if you have only had the phone for less than 28 days.

I'll ask them about it again today when their customer service lines open. The lady that I talked to yesterday coulldn't tell me where they got it from and said that I should ask Samsung International. Hopefully I get someone a little more capable on the line next time...
In the meantime I initiated a return authorization request thru Amazon yesterday to see if this will motivate the seller to be more cooperatve.
If that doesn't work I guess I can file for a claim next.
Wish me luck...

Wish you all the best.

I heard good things about handtec, but I'm buying a Squaretrade warrenty just incase. Their warranty's only covers up to $600 though. So if they have to replace your phone, they just cut you a check for $600....the warranty cost's $124, so your really only getting $476 back. You can buy displays on ebay already, but I'm not sure how hard they would be to install.

Update:
The Vendor insists I contact Samsung for warranty repair/replacement. Samsung Latin America in this case. Contacted Samsung Latin America and was told that Samsung products bought thru Amazon.com aren't covered.
I'm tired of getting the run around, I'm going to file a claim with Amazon and see if that works.

It is very unfortunate. If something happens to my Note then I am not going to be able to claim the warranty too as I got it delivered from outside the country. Overall this is negative PR for Samsung that they fuss to give International warranty.

Did you pay via Ppal or Credit Card ? If you did, contest the charge stating the item had issues from the beginning that the seller did not resolve. When VisaMC hits them with a chargeback, I will bet the 3rd party vendor will say, OK, send it back and we will replace it. If they purchase direct from Samsung, they can get it fixed. Did the items description explicitly say NO WARRANTY ?

From their seller page:
"All products sold by us carry manufacture warranty"
I paid with a credit card. I emailed them one last time telling them Samsung will not cover replacement/repair and asking that they replace my busted Note with a new one. If that doesn't work I'll file a claim with Amazon. I'd rather not intiate a chargeback...yet.

I think you get 45 days to contest a charger? IM sure it varries by the credit card company

Update
Got an email from Amazon saying that my claim is denied since the sellers page says that there are no returns on cell phones.
I submitted an appeal stating that the sellers page also says that all products sold by them are covered by manufacturers warranty. Even though Samsung USA and Samsung Latin America won't cover it.
If this doesn't work I'll call my CC company and see about getting a chargeback done.
In the meantime I think I'll order a new Note from the better sellers out there. What do you guys recommend? Expansys USA or Handtec?

Try going through Newegg. If it's bad within 30 days they will refund or replace. Otherwise Handtec is great, but if you need warranty ......

You shouldn't be getting/buying phone from on-line sellers such as on Amazon. It's not true that mobile phone (in general) has an international warranty.
You should really wait for an official release in your country.

Do you know the amazon seller name?
I am looking to buy from amazon and based on your experience now I am worried. Can you tell the name of the seller? I had contacted Global mobile amazon seller and was told for warranty purpose you need to ship it back to their office in Germany and they will take care of it.

The green line on the left is because of the pentile pixel layout, its your green sub pixel.

Well he did say a big green line, due to the pentile display it should be like 1 subpixel in thickness not a "big green line" as per OP.

this thread should be stickied. Good info to know when we go about buying a foreign phone

IMPORTANT: Detailed information on how HTC service claims work.

Since there have been numerous questions about this, I thought I'd create a new thread detailing the warranty and DOA processes of HTC. Perhaps a mod will sticky this for a few days so everyone can see it.
--------------------------------------------------------------
I just spent about half an hour talking to the CS Rep at HTC about my ticket. We had a good back and forth discussion, and he explained how the warranty (repair) and DOA processes work, so I'd like to pass that info on to you guys.
*DOA: If a phone is DOA, i.e. it is defective or otherwise non-functioning out of the box, then they replace that phone with a brand new one. They send the customer a return shipping label. The customer is then to ship the defective phone, accessories, etc. in the original packaging back to HTC at their Houston address. The techs inspect and confirm the defect in Houston. Then a BRAND NEW replacement is sent out to the customer (not sure if it's sent from Houston or Indianapolis though). All said and done, this takes about 7-10 business days from the time the customer ships their phone to HTC. Also, no credit card number is required, because there's no risk to HTC losing inventory with this method.
*Repair (i.e. Warranty claim): A phone is categorized as a Repair if the defect has shown up after some time (i.e. not right out of the box). In contrast to the DOA scenario, here the customer provides their credit card number to HTC. Then HTC ships you a REFURBISHED replacement handset only, along with a return shipping label. Once you receive your replacement phone, THEN you send back your defective unit. The turn around time is usually short for the customer here... it takes 2-3 days for you to get your handset via Fedex.
Now, I've talked to a couple people who were skeptical that they'd receive a refurb because the phone just came out. So was I... then I asked the CS Rep that as well. He told me that they have plenty of refurbished units because this phone has actually been in production for several months. Whenever a phone was found defective at the end of the assembly line, it was sent back to be refurbished, and added to HTC's inventory of refurbs. Also, any presale units that were handed out, by Google to its employees for example, that had issues, were sent to HTC and refurbed as well.
So there you have it. If your phone was entered into the system as a Repair, you're getting a refurb. If your phone was entered as DOA, you'll have to wait 12 days longer, but will get a new phone. Now bear in mind that even if you're getting a refurb, you can expect the phone to look brand new, since it was likely just plucked off the end of the assembly line and never left the factory. The only difference between it and a "brand new" phone is that its case was opened by a technician after assembly...so if you're fine with that, then you're in luck.

*Edit* I didn't see 'warranty claim' first time around. Please ignore.
The information I got was different:
I just called up HTC and asked them If the phone you get in the process where they ship you a phone, and then you ship yours back was going to be a brand new or refurbished phone. He left for about 15 mins to check with some other staff there because he wasn't sure, and came back and swore to me up and down that the phone I would receive will be brand new and NOT refurbished. I don't know if he's right, or if the Rep uansari talked to is correct. However the rep I talked to went away for a while because he told me he wants to be sure I get the correct answer and so he went to check with supervisor/other staff/etc.

Yes, I saw your post in the other thread. So essentially, everyone is getting different information, and even HTC's own reps don't know the score...? Either way, I think to be safe it's best to ask for DOA if you want to make sure you get a new handset. Either way you'll be fine though.
I'm really curious if what the OP says is true. I have an issue where my phone randomly turns off. It has probably happened to me about 5 or 6 times now. Nothing huge, but a bit disheartening considering the price tag. I was considering calling HTC, but if I'm going to get a Refurb I'd rather not. I work for T-Mobile and I can not tell you how much more often refurb phones come back with issues compared with their new counterparts.
ok called again. this rep also said swaps are brand new. I told him I heard that they are refurbs, then he went to check with 2 supervisors who also said that at this point in time (they said it may change in a month or two) all swaps sent out are brand new phones reserved for this purpose.

I have no reason not to tell you the truth of what I was told. That being said, if you call HTC and tell them your phone has had this issue since you first got it, and ask them to DOA the device, you know that you'll definitely get a brand new phone.

Problem with buyer on ebay

I sold a HTC Desire HD with a cracked screen and a missing volume rocker on ebay for £80.
Before sending the phone I tested everything and everything was working perfectly fine.
Now the buyer has messaged me saying the vibration doesn't work on the phone but I am 100% sure that it worked when I sent it.
He hasn't asked for a refund but I'm worried that he will and I can't really afford to issue one.
What can I do? Because it was working when I sent it but I don't have proof of that.
Thanks.

Depends on what you had in your listing.
Was it sold as faulty or spares/repair? Was it sold with no returns?
Ebay unfortunately have a habit of siding with the seller. Try contacting the buyer and offering a partial refund rather than a full one.
Returns not accepted.
But there was nothing wrong with the vibration, and I don't want the buyer or ebay to think I ripped him off because I didn't, and I don't see how the motor could have broken in transaction.
I'm skint at the moment due to many bills coming in at the same time, so I can't afford any type of refund.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S3 using Tapatalk 2
As long as you were detailed on your ebay listing quoting phone has issues buyer should assume there are issues. Do not fret if he opens a claim against you with ebay, they will look at your posting and see that you mentioned there are defects with the phone, As long as you did not place in ad phone 100% funtional you have no issues and if you did you dont have the burden of proof. As well as look into how long it took seller to reply or even if they took phone apart to repair screen, I had a buyer wanting a refund back saying item did not work 45 days later saying they just opened it. They lost so dont worry about something that has not begun yet. Ebay is a very solid and trustworthy sight that does the right thing for buyers as well as sellers. Unlike craigslist and their scammers.
Edit: Plus they do not get a refund until ebay knows you recieved item back in same condition as shipped. DO NOT OFFER partial refunds cause possible buyer trying to get one over on you let ebay deal with the dispute if there is any.
The vibration motor on my DHD packed in one day. Just went from working to not working. No drops or anything like that, so it could happen.
But...
When did you sell it and when did the buyer receive it? Was there a few days between them actually taking delivery and then contacting you?
When I purchase anything via eBay, I immediately check it and if necessary contact the seller. This is to eliminate any "you've had it a week, you broke it" scenarios.
The fact you listed it as having a cracked screen and faulty volume rocker indicates you were honest with its state pre-sale, why would you hide the fact vibration motor didn't work? I think in any event eBay would see that you were honest with your description.
I would contact the buyer and let them know that it was thoroughly tested before you posted it, and that any damage other than what you disclosed must have happened in the post. And in that case to claim from Royal Mail, DHL, Yodel (or whoever your courier was). I'm assuming you used a method of dispatch that was insured.
Thanks for the great advice Andy
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S3 using Tapatalk 2
Quite true what mr. Mod says there but I encountered once almost the same situation as you with ebay. Their rule there states that as long as the defect is not stated in the listing then it's the seller's responsibility. I even hear sellers ranting on the forums about their product's parts being replaced and returned to them but ebay insists a return unless the seller could really prove their claim. Regarding the vibration not working if the buyer states that it's not working since he/she recieved it maybe you both could redirect the case on the courier you used on delivering the package and file a mishandling case on their side.
If you're sure that vibration is working when you said it and the buyer claims that it doesn't work since he recieved it then point it to the delivery man
But before that ask the buyer first when did the vibration stopped working. if he says greater than 1 day then ignore him!
He's now asking for refund. I don't have the money so what will happen if eBay side with him?

Stand your corner, if you are 100% sure that the vibration worked before dispatch, then you have done nothing wrong. You should direct the buyer to the courier as that can be the only source (other than the buyer) that could've caused the damage.
Sould the buyer file a dispute with eBay/PayPal, just be truthful, state that the vibration motor worked prior to dispatch and that it must have occurred in transit. State that you have contacted the buyer to file a claim with the courier (which you should do, if you have not already).
Worse case, the buyer should return the handset to you, postage at buyers expense, before you refund the money. Should give you chance to relist it if necessary. In my experience, although limited, with eBay & PayPal is that if you are honest you should be ok.
The buyer is happy with me contacting Royal Mail to claim. I insured the postage so should be fine, but I've had a problem with Royal Mail insurance claim in the past.

As long as you state the facts, you should not have an issue. Insured carriage is designed to cover circumstances such as yours. Contact the buyer and ask for photo's of the packaging, perhaps that shows signs of mishandling.
I actually did a bit of temporary driving work for Yodel, driving HGVs between depots, and I can guarantee that your packages are thrown about.
If the pictures show dents, crush marks or anything to suggest mishandling, you are covered.

ebay will always side with buyer, if u want to "play the ebay game" then get the item sent back with tracking, wait on the refund ebay will refund your buyer, you then refund ebay but u dnt repay. instead u dispute the claim ie phones more damaged than when u sent it. hey presto ebay pay the refund and u get the phone to resell.
maybe not the correct way but id say this buyer just wants a partial refund hes playing the "ebay game" as he knows ebay will ask u to refund.

[Q] Craigslist Nexus4 16gb offer questions

I have an opportunity to buy a Nexus4 16gb locally on craigslist for $400 which is the same price as my Google order that won't come in for another 5 weeks. The seller appears to be legit after getting his name and googling his name. The phone is in the original box with the Google seal stickers on untouched. I asked if I could open and put my SIM card to make a test call but, he stated no since it would devalue the phone if I decided not to buy, which I understood. I asked for his receipt but, he said all I needed for warranty issues was the imei number on the phone.
Please point out anything else I need to be looking/asking for as I will be picking it up tomorrow at 7pm cst based on feedback from all the awesome members in this forum.

1. Great price, but I would be suspicious on his reasoning on selling it for $400, not much profit to gain (if at all).
2. Googling his name? What does this have to do with anything? Does he own a company or something? This part makes no sense to me.
3. Google seal stickers... very easy to reseal it with black tape.
4. There wouldn't be any devaluing if you were to test the device with a SIM card. This is bs IMO. The only devalue would be if it was truly sealed and then which I can believe him.
5. I'm not sure about the receipt and warranty but depending on when he bought it. Google Play gives you 12 days for a RMA with them before you take it to the manufacturer. I would take the receipt though, as he can easily just report the IMEI and then you get screwed in the end or something.

3. Google seal stickers... very easy to reseal it with black tape. I will have to inspect case and stickers when I go to buy it. If looks suspicious, will pass.

. Will ask for receipt for your reason mentioned.
See my answers above. Thanks for your input.
You can make a deal like, Open it and I will test a call and if works I take it otherwise wont. So opening it and not taking it is not an option
Yeah if he won't let you test it **** it. You can't find the phone anywhere opening the box will hardly devalue it at all, if even. Also you should try and get the receipt because AFAIK you need more than just an IMEI for the warranty.

I would not even consider buying it if you cannot test the phone. The phone might not even be in there for all you know.
THANKS to everyone who responded to my inquiry. Got back a little while ago with the new Nexus4. It is Beauty and the Beast. Already put the case on it and now downloading my apps. The seller was on the up and up, was able to test by making a call, go over the entire phone specially the front and back glass.
Now I get to sit and play with the new toy this weekend. Got to cancel my Dec 8th order and help someone else get theirs quicker.

Congrats. Glad it all worked out and nothing suspicious happened. Happy to hear that the seller changed his mind and let you test it.
I would research the S/N from the box with Google to see if it is stolen. Also if you buy it be sure to get a receipt from the seller to show you bought it and how much you paid.
I bought one from kijjiji $550.00 BNIB 16 Gb Didn't even put a sim in. Broke the seal looked at it that's it.. But I also got a receipt First thing called google had the warranty changed into my name they checked the imei and it was legit :good:
I suggest you get a receipt it has his name on it..
BTW he ordered nov 27 got it on the 29 I bought it dec 16..
Only problem is that only the original buyer can return the device to Google for an exchange if a problem occurs. And they do keep track of who bought them so without the original receipt your only option for the warranty is through LG. What LG does is have you send the phone back to them for repairs which can take a couple weeks and in teh meantime you have no phone. This has been discussed a number of times in several threads already as a few unlucky craigslist buyers found out when they wanted to do an exchange for a defective device.

Fantastic customer service from Motorola

I dropped my 2013 Moto x and shattered the screen. I use the advanced repair option on the Motorola web site to try and have it repaired for $100. That's where they put a hold on your credit card and ship a "Like new" phone to you then you ship the broken one back to them when the new one arrives. If you don't ship the old one back they bill you for the new one.
I waited over two weeks to get the replacement from Motorola with an email from them that it was shipped 13 days ago. Today after they had me on hold for 45 minutes they came back and apologized to me that it wasn't really shipped and offered me a free upgrade to the 2014 model. I just got done designing my 16 gb pure edition with a bamboo back and it didn't cost me a dime. Not even charge for tax or delivery. Expected delivery January 13th.
Can't beat that for service!
Not too shabby. You're gonna love it, it's an improvement over the 2013 model in every way but the size. I still think the 2013 was the perfect size and wish they didn't make the 2014 as large as they did.
I have only had good experience with moto. The only thing that I dislike about them their billing is screwed up.

The support in the UK is shocking. I reported a problem with the wooden back coming off a few days after I got the phone and it's taken several weeks to get anywhere with the support. Cases either get closed as solved or ignored by Motorola. I finally called up and spoke to someone but they won't do an advanced shipment of a replacement so I either have to send it for repair or send it back. As I used the cyber Monday discount if I send it back I'll have to order a new one at full price.
I have had some decent interaction with their customer support and they have been very helpful. My only issue is that for whatever reason they will not let me pay $50 extra to make my replacement phone the 64GB version. I started the process for the 14 day return/exchange within the required period, got my code and then noticed they had the 64 available now so I tried to get that. They just refuse to do it and say it is not possible, which I find very strange. I have spoken to a few different people, all very nice, one said he thinks he can get me the code and I can pay the upgrade fee and the other said it is absolutely not possible.
Other than that they have given me some codes for buying accessories and have been helpful.
Is the 14 day exchange policy a US only thing? Or do you have to return the phone prior to receiving the replacement?

I am in the US, but I am not sure if it is only an US thing or not. You can exchange your phone one of two ways; advanced replacement sends you a new device but you put down a deposit, when you get the replacement device you have ten days to send in your old phone. The other way is you send in your old phone first and then get the replacement.

Thank you for contacting Motorola.
We inform you that the advance repair procedure is not implemented in Europe, only in the US, and it's likely that he has heard about this procedure from American customers, as the XDA developers forum is American. Unfortunately, we cannot control the information provide in third party sites not managed by Motorola.
Motorola procedures in the US are not the same as in Europe, and due to this, in this case we can only offer you a replacement or credit, both following the same procedure: send the phone back to us using the DHL labels that we will provide, and when the phone is arrived to our service centre, this will trigger automatically a refund, or a new xCode for replacement, depending on what is the option that customer prefers.
As you contacted us during the 14 days period in case xxxxx-xxxxxx, the return for credit is possible, but you will need to return the phone to us first and the the system will trigger the resolution.
In case your choose the refund of the credit, in the meantime of course you can place another order.

So I guess I'll get a replacement, the first phone I sent back arrived back to them in Germany the next day so hopefully I should get the code to place the order again fairly quickly.
I dropped my Moto X 2014 just three weeks after it arrived and the display was cracked. Motorola really sent me a new one after they received the broken one - I had to pay nothing.
Best costumer support I ever experienced. I don't think you can expect this anywhere else.
I'm from Germany, for your information

Bootloop, LG and Farewell

Well, it's happened on Monday. Was using my phone and bloop....screen goes off and that's the last time it worked. Gradually got to the stage where it wouldnt even loop but my 5x is dead. RIP.
So, being out of warranty and all I sent an email to LG to see how much it would cost to repair. Reply came back with a series of questions but no "reply to" address. That's one way of hiding from the problem I suppose. For a company to try and avoid their responsibilities for a screamingly obvious hardware flaw is way out of order. At least Samsung had the guts to put their hands up.
Sharing this as part of the grieveing process in a way for the old Nexus devices. Had a 4, a 7 and then a 5x. The Pixels came out but when I saw their price tags and the setups it just reeked of apple (excuse the bad swearing language). Very sad really for someone who rarely went a whole week without the simple process of changing rom or setup or kernel but that was the beauty of the Nexus ethos.
Since Monday evening I have been the owner of a Moto G5 Plus. Only charged it three times since getting it. Ads are part blocked in stock, it's nippy and am moving on with my life post nexus. Trouble is it's still on 7.0 but not a big issue for me.
Anyway, thanks guys and gals for the good times. LEarnt a lot about android, poor customer service and build quality from LG and made some good friends (and enemies) on here.
Keep happy
My 5X also died from last Sunday.... I sent my phone to authorized service (Procordia in Greece). I'm waiting now when the phone will be fixed (changing motherboard).
So I know you already moved on to the G5 plus, but you should see about getting it repaired. Then you could always keep on hand as a .spare device. Mine bootlooped (a second time) well out of warranty but I filled out the RMA request on LG's website (didn't talk to anyone, just like I did the first time) and they fixed it a second time for free. I don't recall how long they did it for, but they extended the warranty
edit: should point out I'm in the US and it might not go as well in other countries
My nexus died on me yesterday, still have 3 days left in warranty. Filed 2 reports to LG to request a repair and have had no email or anything, its as if my request has vanished. This is utterly ridicolous as I need a phone and I'm currently without one and can't afford anything worth buying. Will have to resort to using my Nokia 1600. Shame on LG for being like this
You should try contacting LG via phone and that might work better. The 5X warranty has been extended to 18 months on a case by case basis since this is a hardware problem. If they won't fix it, all you did was spend time on the call, but if you are eligible to have it fixed, you'd have a spare phone.
These bootloops are getting more and more common as our phone ages. Mine froze and shut down randomly and bricked while using it a few months back. Thankfully I bought mine here in the UK from Carphone Warehouse where I sent it for repairs, got the motherboard replaced, and fixed in one week, for free with the 2-year warranty. It sucks that LG aren't willing to help you guys though.
Mine died on me earlier this year. Luckily I had some backup phones. Using my old 2013 Nexus 5 currently. I can get life from my phone here and then but it freezes and shuts down during the boot animation. I bought mine from someone off craigslist so I doubt I'd have any luck getting it fixed by Google or LG. Too bad parts are hard to come by or I would try and buy a new motherboard and replace it myself. I really do miss using the 5X though. Just got to hold off until the end of the year for the next Pixel.
My Nexus 5X also bootlooped itself to death yesterday. I purchased it January 2016 when my Nexus 5 decided to kill itself. Unfortunately I also bought a 5X for my girlfriend at the same time which I'm expecting to go anytime now. I'm currently using my Samsung Galaxy S II that I bought at launch and is still alive 6 years later. Sucks because the only new phone that looks good to me right now is the LG G6, but I don't trust LG anymore so I don't know what to replace it with. Galaxy S 8 is purdy but I don't want to deal with burn in (like on my GS2). Essential also looks nice but doesn't have a headphone jack so that's out. Might have to go Sony with it's gigantic bezels. :-\
Update: Getting a refurbished replacement from Google. Hopefully by the time this one dies there will be some more appealing replacement options.
My second 5X died few days ago. Good phone bad quality
Mine died today. Warranty expired last October but they are sending me a refurb replacement. I've had it since November 2015 and even Bought it off swappa so I feel fortunate in one way but a phone should last a lot longer than that.

Who did you go through? Google or LG? I bought mine from someone off Craigslist but haven't tried asking for a replacement since I've never had any type of warranty. Did you have to show any kind of receipt of buying it or anything or did they just simply say "Ok" and send you a refurbished one? Also, did you call them or email them?

I went through Google. All they did was ask for and run the lME number. I did not expect anything to come of it but I thought it was worth a try. I chatted online.

Well I just might do the same. If you bought it from a third party and it died yesterday and your already getting a refurbished one, I think I may have a shot. Good to know. Thanks
Well. Some progress here too.
Decided to give LG a go but as I bought it over ebay they wouldnt entertain any warranty work but gave me their out of warranty people called SBE here in the UK.
Contacted SBE and without any commitment on their behalf the fella said that they would look at it and if its not showing signs of damage and water etc then it should be covered as they have permission to replace faulty motherboards with only postage costs.
So am packing the phone off to them and see what happens. Anybody else experienced this route? Would be worth getting it fixed just to sell the damn thing afterwards.

Sure,
the verbage is a bit intimidating saying that they are putting full price for refurbished on hold on your account to see if it is covered by warranty but what they want to do is make sure you didn't run over it or drop it from a ten story building.

Yes, and then when they receive it and see it's not physically damaged (water, smashed screen) they refund you back the price of the phone. I didn't have to pay shipping either way.

It's kind of funny they would even hold onto the price of the phone seeing as the device isn't under warranty and it would be no loss to them. I mean, what would be the scenario where they would actually charge you the amount of the phone?

They send you the phone right away and give you 21 days to get the bad phone back to them. The hold is to make sure they get an undamaged phone returned to them.

Ah, ok. Well that makes sense then. I thought they would send it to you after they analyzed the damaged one.
