Worried about ICS - Galaxy S II General

Isn't anyone else worried about how blue ICS is and about AMOLED burn in?

Meh, that's what themes are for. Plus as big a video guy as I am, (I'm a video engineer), the "lowered output over time" that many incorrectly call burn in, isn't enough to bother me.yes I can see it looking for it but again, amoled is just too friggen awesome to care. My epic still looked very good after a year of heavy, high brightness use. Also lowering brightness will slow this down but I say (w an extra battery) crank it and enjoy the expensive device you paid for!

What should we worry about more exactly?

ICS will have a blue status bar. The blue leds loose their brightness quicker than the red and green thus the bar being blue you get burn in effect although its not burnin but inproper degradation of the leds.

I'll probably have an S3 by then!

+1 Or even an S4 by the time it starts looking bad enough to even care.

I certainly wouldn't say i'm 'worried' by it ...

I'm worried if it it won't have a good battery life not about a blue bar or other things. I'm sure everything else will work fine.

My thoughts exactly. I bought this phone for the processing power and the awesome screen. Turning the screen down because of something that might happen over time would be a shame.

seriously am i the only one who thinks that the forum is getting filled with pointless threads

I didn't get it, What is the problem of using blue bar? it looks awesome.

Yeah you are right..Forgot how sensitive some people on here are...Next time i will sugar coat them..

AFAIK Amoled degradation is non linear (like plasma) the first hunders hours it will degrade fast and then it will stabilize and even the blue leds (which has the shortest lifespan) will outlast the usefull life of your mobile easily (at least 4 years with 6 hours screen time a day)
IF color balance gets skewed by wearing out blue more than the other colors you can always readjust the balance, for example with chainFire's app

This isn't a pointless thread. It's actually useful. People do worry about the screen burns
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium

Actually I hate the black status, menus, etc. Why don't they use light colors?, I don't know. I much prefer the old android status bar color. At least the degradation was not that visible when using fullscreen apps. (I do browse a lot, and a large procent of pages have white background. Also most apps have white background).
I really do not understand Google why it doesn't give to the user a build-in simple color scheme editor, so you can easily change the system colors (such as statusbar, menu). Like it was on WM. You could change the status bar color via registry, no mess with pack/unpack/resign of framework blablabla. Oh my..

and i do worry about mine as well but i am sure if the lovely chap who opened this thread actually took the time to search and try and find answers to his questions we would not be having this conversation now..even if he could not find anything on xda(which highly doubtful) then google is his saviour...
But anyway hope he finds his answers now and he stops worrying. after all we are a community to help each other...

Wow
Yeah, so, if your screen-on time can burn out the screen, before ambient humidity burns out the mainboard... you need to put your phone down before you get cancer LOL
Seriously, the half life of the pixels in AMOLED is a mean average 14,000 hours...
One year, seven months... that would be at FULL brightness, with the screen ON for the entire duration to hit the half life...
And you're WORRIED?! LMMFAO
Use your phone, love it, and stop worrying, you'll have a new phone before you notice pixel death.

Doubling battery life using surfaceflinger

http://jsharkey.org/blog/2010/07/01/android-surfaceflinger-tricks-for-fun-and-profit/
Cool
If you didn't know how OLED works it might be cool.
But IMHO it is totally useless, why would I want to distort colors for some battery time?
I am sorry i really have the say the screen looks like your phone is going back to factory.
I do not want a AMOLED LED screen look like damaged nokia phone.
Anyway, still thanks for sharing
Maybe this app is useless but screen looks cool when you enable this and you can trick your friends that they broken your phone
The red filter could be useful at night, for preserving night vision as the author mentioned.

First I think some parts of the device won't be usable since graphics might not have any red in it.
Secondly, since when did anyone care about night vision combined with the use of a phone?
Maybe using it as a GPS, but most programs has a night mode anyways.
why all the negative comments.
android is all about options. if you forget your charger and need limited usage of the screen I could see where it would be useful.

Would it not be more useful to make everything dark instead?
Also, I would like to point out:
Even though some comments may be negative that is the whole thing about a discussion forum. People disagree and vent their opinions.
I look at the usability of what presented and thus venting my thougts on that, for instance this post and can see none.
I also already knew that red needs less electricity than blue OLEDs. That is true for LEDs as well I believe, or anything emitting light, since blue light carries more energy than red.
This could definitely be useful when you're desperate for battery but need to use your phone... ie you need to find a place and you're running out of battery.... It might not be revolucionary but it's nice to have the option to save some battery when you really need to...
@aeo087 - You are right. Could use this in case of emergency situation. Specially if u are away from charger or a usb port of pc and wants more juice from battery for like listening to FM or music.
I think this is excellent work.
At the very least it suggests using a simpler theme could have a big difference on battery life. I dont have a Galaxy S yet but when I do I will definitely be experimenting with this. Im hoping I could also use this OpenGL filter to have a low power mode, as suggested by dseo80, for use when you know your going to be away from a charger.
This would be awesome as low battery mode

Has this been fixed with firmware updates or now that custom roms are able to be loaded?
Or is the screen just that terrible?

I've heard this complain before but I don't seem to have this issue.. or perhaps I'm color blind or something lol.
I do intend to not have much yellow more so red and black on my screen than anything..
Is it really THAT MUCH of a nuisance?
it is really annoying, and unfortunately i'm pretty sure it's hardware-based due to the PenTile display. there are plenty of previous discussions on this so please search back and read up on it there.

It's not terrible for me. It's just the way our screen is.
Our screen was built for -> battery saving, that's why color reproduction has problems.
And for me the choice paid off, I am getting the best battery life than with any android smartphone.
If color reproduction was more important to you, you shouldn't have bought an Atrix.
Supposedly pentile screens also have advantages with sunlight visibility. My wife has an HTC Desire S, and it is literally unviewable in the Sun and yet mine remained completely usable and clear. She was not impressed and I was left gloating

And there is no reason in the world why inaccurate color reproduction would EVER result in better battery life. Unless of course you're talking about switching a screen to black and white.

Its too bad some color panel hidden behind the scenes couldn't be accessed to correct the color. It would have been a top contender for some time to come. Love how big the battery is.
Have they ported cm7 to it yet? Are they still doing the 2nd init hack or has the bootloader been unlocked?

wasn't trying to upset you.
but if we're on that wave, if you're well aware of the problem and searching only netted you no new answers, what did you expect asking would do? net you more non-new answers.
The Atrix screen indeed makes everything a little "bluer" (are your yellows slightly green?).
I read that in CM7 you can alter the color scheme a little bit, or there's an app that can also do this...I'd have to search a little bit to find what I'm talking about, but I'll post a link in just a sec.
Edit: this is what I was thinking of...Might not be exactly what you're looking for, as it requires you to have CM7 it looks like (not that that's a bad thing, but of course it's still in pre-beta and you might not want to use it). It's a start though, and gives you a little more info.
It's an unfixable hardware "problem".
It not a huge deal (can't really tell a huge difference)
Who cares.

Green Screen Syndrome

Its just a **** load of hyperbole.
Go into Voodoo Sound and scroll down to "Voodoo Color" and adjust the sliders.
NO ONE has the same screen/eye combo so what looks smexy for the kernel dev might look like a drunk heffer to you.
Personally my phone doesn't experience the green screen because I sat there and adjusted each value till I got the color reproduction I wanted (it may not be "true white" but I like my vibrantness ) so people, get off your asses and make your phone YOUR PHONE by putting in what you feel is the most comfty for your eyes.
If that's too much for you and you'd rather wait for the kernel devs to **** up their colors on their screen so that your BASE colors may or may not be correct, then maybe you shouldn't be worried about color and just stick with stock dull values.

Lol really? All I see in every rom thread is "my screen is green I flashed this kernel cuz I want voodoo color but I can't be bothered to read through 50 pages to see the fix". And the replies are all "SEARCH!!1!11ONE!!"
The purpose of this thread is so people who have the green screen can open and see how their laziness contributes to their problem.
I am all in favor of turning this into a settings discussion but the main purpose has been stated
Also, my settings are very inaccurate, not true colors at all lol but just raise your gamma a tiny bit and everything will be good

I see your point but i guess were just trying to get them to be less lazy is all haha, and voodoo color will depend on each kernel like shadow vs samurai but there kind of identical so pretty much same settings should give same results.

If by green screen, you mean the flash of green everytime I unlock my phone, then its not "laziness" that contributes to the problem, its the ShadowKernel. I am not going to raise my gamma settings so that the screen is completely washed out just so the green flash doesn't happen when I unlock my phone. I have been using voodoo color for a LONG time spanning multiple versions of androids and at least a half a dozen different kernels, and this is a the ONLY one that has had this problem. I have always used the "punchy" setting, and this is the only time I have ever seen that green flash.

Its definitely your laziness giving you the green screen.
People moaned and groaned to bbelos about how he should incorporate custom settings into shadow so that they can have nice ass colors out the box, and on bbelos phone it can handle low gamma obviously which is why the gamma is so low and he put his values in and everyone expected it to lookk the same on their phones and couldn't be bothered with no type of personalization on their part.
If you can't manage to slide your gamma bars a little to the right to correct this problem, then don't complain when the fix is posted. You've obviously never bothered to mess with the sliders because if you did, you would've seen how much raising the gamma 2 values "washes out the screen".
Don't try to throw your $.02 in if you can't even bother to try it, otherwise your opinion is one sided and void.

Remember, samurai was a (very stable) hackjob kernel, pulling bits and pieces from every other kernel he can find.

You're a blithering idiot who didn't even read my post. Making my screen look like **** isn't a "fix". I have run the "punchy" gamma settings on multiple roms and multiple versions of Android, and NEVER had a green flash when waking the device . . . . . until CM9 and Voodoo Color.
I like how my phone looks with all of the gamma settings set to -45. Yet you are telling me the FIX is to set them to -43? Hint, it still happens when the gamma is set to -30 for all values, and the screen looks significantly ****tier.
I do love how you make assumptions though and freely insult others based solely on your own arrogance. Its very cute.

XPERIA Z Screen Differences.

Hey all,
Just wanted to get a quick opinion from everyone here about the Sony Xperia Z screen.
There has obviously been a large discussion on the internet about the different quality Xperia screens and today I managed to identify first hand what an arguably good Z screen locks like in comparison to a bad one ,at least for my tastes. One device has a horrid reflection effect in a dark environment which left me wanting while another unit has better contrast all round with higher saturation.
What is everyone's experience and likes dislikes with the Xperia Z screen? I remember the apple screens when you use to go to the apple store and notice your screen has a yellowish tint in comparison to the same model on display which ticked me right of.
I want to close this display discussion once and for all so we know what the deal is. Are there really bad screens and good screens and what are the differences? I think there are and I stated my opinion above.

I think I know what you mean I noticed this as well. Check this video on YouTube with and without bravura engine and take auto brightness of and put it to 50%.

Dots it still seem dark?

Thank you for the tip. So is it best to set the display to 50% with the auto brightness & the bravia engine turned OFF? It does seem better with the engine turned off overall it seems
Some says the Japanese version is JDi
Screen and it better than ours

I just mentioned that you should switch brightness to 50% so you can level the comparison field without your phone actually changing the brightness and changing results. Bravia engine should probably stay off if you don't like it, personal preference really. as for the auto brightness I recommend keeping it on, it is the first ever device that I have left this feature on since it does such a good job with it! will probably save some battery as well most times.
So does this mean the video looked alright?

So is this phone (with better screen) only sold in Japan? That would be quite shocking.
And who are you refering to when you say that some say? link Maybe...

Well I do like the auto feature too so left that on with 50% brightness
The bravia engine, tbh I can't see any difference with photos, only with videos things seem so dark that you can't watch anything properly. So I guess I'll only turn it off when I am watching videos. They should have an option to let you have it on for photos & off for videos
But yes switching bravia off worked the videos perfectly thank you

There are some people that willing fail to understand that the Japanese version has a different skin since it's customized by do como. It uses black menus and black buttons. So based on that they say that the Japanese model has a better screen because it displays black

I actually wish they would have made the menu black it would have looked much sleeker.

Let me hear your explanation. Anti-shatter shield makes it worse or what?

It's because of the viewing angles, if you look at the beginning the European version actually looks more vibrant. The thing is that a slight tilt already makes a small difference the phones are recorded from different angles relative to the camera. Since you don't see any difference when viewing the screen head on and the difference in view angles are really minor I think it is just the positioning of the phones relative to the camera. Also because in the first part the European looks slightly better. If you look at the screen bottom up it tens to be slightly more blue with gives it slightly more vibrancy if you look top down it gives a bit more yellow causing white to be slightly yellow and thus has a tiny effect on contrast

Screen flickering in direct sunlight?

Hello,
I picked up my GS4 about a week ago but haven't really used it in direct sunlight until today. I was outside, and the sun was shining brightly on the screen. Home screen was fine, and darker images were ok, but if I were to go to an app with a primarily white background, or open up something which used the keyboard (texting) the screen would flicker pretty noticeably. Brightness is all the way up, and auto tone was off.
Has anyone else seen this?
yup this is normal esp when using the keyboard.
Im not sure if it will be fixed.

I guess my question is, is this a hardware issue with many GS4's or a minority. I came across a thread on the Tmobile GS4 forum where people were experiencing it, but it seems not everyone is.

Its a hardware thing, but also its only in touchwiz so a developer might be able to turn it off so to speak.
It adjusts the color and tone no matter what to save the display from overheating and or burning in...
Does it a lot and I notice it cause im weird about those kinds of things.
If you use CM 10.1 or AOKP its gone.
ive made some progress with the RGB light meter on this; hoping a friend can write up some code so we can test out a 'smoothed out' transition and sampling rate and one that is sped up, averaged faster, but will take up more CPU and RAM and battery but more accurate.
here is another thread regarding it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280715
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284726
Maybe if someone who is using CM10 or AOKP could test it to see if it is a software issues and not a hardware issue?
edit: slade and jet replied while I was writing this...thanks for the info. looks like it is touchwiz related.
edit2: just went out in the sun again to test a lot of different options in the display settings (which none worked) but is seems it is only happening when the keyboard is enabled. I am using swiftkey.
yeah TW and that sensor communicate; i believe the sensor itself probably works better ALONE, but TW changes it and throttles it for either battery or screen safety.
It is always dependent on what is being pulled up on the screen, though it can be mitigated quite a bit if you disable all power saving and screen auto features, and leave brightness under 80% or so.
yea anything under 80% in direct sun is basically black. all power saving and screen auto modes were disabled. i covered up all of the sensors too and it still flickered....

Not just a sensor thing per-say.
It's hard to explain, they most likely did it because they didn't want the amoled to burn in.
Its the same reason why the brightness goes up another 34% or so on auto above the max brightness. Only uses it when needed to save the screen and battery.
Does it on youtube too btw, bring up a video on wide screen then tap it and you'll see the drastic color shift
I noticed this thing when I got my phone also. I thought I was just imagining it but I guess it's an actual problem

Seriously its about power handling/battery saving and white balance, but its noticeable, and annoying.

No that's not possible, its hard coded into touchwiz, this isn't a bug or anything...
If people say they don't have it; they're not noticing it.

Thought my eyes were going crazy. Mine does this too. It even did it once under some fluorescent lights. It's not annoying enough to matter but it would be cool if it gets fixed.
