Doubling battery life using surfaceflinger - Galaxy S I9000 General

Cool

If you didn't know how OLED works it might be cool.
But IMHO it is totally useless, why would I want to distort colors for some battery time?

I am sorry i really have the say the screen looks like your phone is going back to factory.
I do not want a AMOLED LED screen look like damaged nokia phone.
Anyway, still thanks for sharing

Maybe this app is useless but screen looks cool when you enable this and you can trick your friends that they broken your phone

The red filter could be useful at night, for preserving night vision as the author mentioned.

First I think some parts of the device won't be usable since graphics might not have any red in it.
Secondly, since when did anyone care about night vision combined with the use of a phone?
Maybe using it as a GPS, but most programs has a night mode anyways.

why all the negative comments.
android is all about options. if you forget your charger and need limited usage of the screen I could see where it would be useful.

Would it not be more useful to make everything dark instead?

Also, I would like to point out:
Even though some comments may be negative that is the whole thing about a discussion forum. People disagree and vent their opinions.
I look at the usability of what presented and thus venting my thougts on that, for instance this post and can see none.
I also already knew that red needs less electricity than blue OLEDs. That is true for LEDs as well I believe, or anything emitting light, since blue light carries more energy than red.

This could definitely be useful when you're desperate for battery but need to use your phone... ie you need to find a place and you're running out of battery.... It might not be revolucionary but it's nice to have the option to save some battery when you really need to...

@aeo087 - You are right. Could use this in case of emergency situation. Specially if u are away from charger or a usb port of pc and wants more juice from battery for like listening to FM or music.

I think this is excellent work.
At the very least it suggests using a simpler theme could have a big difference on battery life. I dont have a Galaxy S yet but when I do I will definitely be experimenting with this. Im hoping I could also use this OpenGL filter to have a low power mode, as suggested by dseo80, for use when you know your going to be away from a charger.

This would be awesome as low battery mode

This would be very useful to astronomers, like myself, who would like to use their phones or tabs under the stars and not ruin their night vision.
It's one option that I would almost KILL to have. Someone please do this.

All the apps claiming that our battery backup will double are nothing but useless piece of crap.

Feedback on new AT&T ROM

So I installed it yesterday (and thanks to all those who helped).
I think the new ROM is FANTASTIC. Everything works for me, its faster than before and I have no lags. Im using Launcher Pro because the new Blur doesn't support scrolling widgets.
Battery is definitely better (turned on at 6am and had 15% at 6pn which us amazing for me).
Camera has been improved. Pictures look sharper and the colors no longer look weird. I owned an sgs2 and to me the pictures are just as good (and definitely better than the Sensation I owned for a bit). Its also much faster (put it in sport mode and virtually immediate).
Fingerprint reader works. Properly. Period.
Sound on speaker is excellent. Its still the best device on the market.
Sound on earpiece might be a little quieter. I am not certain on this but its something I noticed on my first call.
Gps lock is very quick. It was before too.
Software. Wow what a MASSIVE improvement. Email software is finally useable readable and possibly as good as Sense. Widgets are also better, like weather. Photo software and gallery better. MUSIC is a different application totally. I think I preferred the old one or just need to get used to it. Dialer is improved. Video playback is still great and again an area where this device excels over others I have owned. Animations also very cool. Top bar and notifications simply better than before. Entire color scheme is improved.
Stock keyboard is better but I still make a lot of mistakes when typing. HTC still make the best Android keyboard IMHO and I wish I could port the Sensation keyboard.
Overall its just more elegant and mire pleasurable ti use. For the first time I feel like its a device to show off. I really believe its the best device out there. Had Moto started out with this ROM it would have been considered a device as good as the HD2 in its day.

After one day on gingerbread, I'd have to say the keyboard's the biggest improvement for me. An @ key without having to press alt first? Yes! Long press keys for numbers? Yes!
I agree. It's a fantastic upgrade and the new skin is slick....my only complaint is that homescreen scrolling isn't as fast as I expected. The forest LWP is a little slow, and pinch to zoom on stock camera gallery isn't as good as my previous phone or 3rd party market apps
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
its is an amazing difference
before making the plunge I wud like to know from u guys about the screen gradient issues
is it solved??
like skin tones appeared really odd and washed out
I thot it was a software issue as the screen grabs also showed them on my PC
that was a big gripe for me but for the otherwise near perfect phone
and ya camera quality was also really poor
Are you talking about kenns?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
dunno whom u are asking but am still on froyo
wud love to hear that screen issues are solved
leaving aside the pentile issue as SGS also has pentile but looked better

I freakin love the new ROM. Thanks KP!
They have made a smart move by selecting a color scheme that greatly reduces the effect of the inherent technical limitations of a Pentile LCD! Its better than Froyo but I guess only because of the color scheme they have decided to go with!

Even if the color scheme didnt change its 10 times better. Im tired of the complaints about the phone, go get a different one and/or dont complain about this one. We dont care to hear it.
Loving the new rom so far. I do think the cardock app got worse (looks better, but fewer custom buttons). I love how you can uninstall apps using a long press from the app drawer.
I'm also looking forward to trying the ignore call, respond with text option.
Last thing, wish the default music app worked with Google Music Beta... installed the Google one instead.

Overall, this seems to be working pretty fantastically for me except for a few things.
- Contact List can get REALLY slow sometimes. (15 seconds to load up a contact's information!)
- Unlocking (the screen, not the phone) can get slow, as well as Facebook and a few other apps. Haven't fully tested yet.
Is this happening to anyone else?
So far, i'm loving the new blur, everything is working fine for me.but i hope this is not the final blur version, because i was watching a demo of blur for droid3 on youtube it looks a little bit better then this. The swipe between screens was different and the quick contact widget was different and more useful.

Screen unable to show accurate yellows.

Has this been fixed with firmware updates or now that custom roms are able to be loaded?
Or is the screen just that terrible?

I've heard this complain before but I don't seem to have this issue.. or perhaps I'm color blind or something lol.
I do intend to not have much yellow more so red and black on my screen than anything..
Is it really THAT MUCH of a nuisance?
it is really annoying, and unfortunately i'm pretty sure it's hardware-based due to the PenTile display. there are plenty of previous discussions on this so please search back and read up on it there.

It's not terrible for me. It's just the way our screen is.
Our screen was built for -> battery saving, that's why color reproduction has problems.
And for me the choice paid off, I am getting the best battery life than with any android smartphone.
If color reproduction was more important to you, you shouldn't have bought an Atrix.
Supposedly pentile screens also have advantages with sunlight visibility. My wife has an HTC Desire S, and it is literally unviewable in the Sun and yet mine remained completely usable and clear. She was not impressed and I was left gloating

And there is no reason in the world why inaccurate color reproduction would EVER result in better battery life. Unless of course you're talking about switching a screen to black and white.

Its too bad some color panel hidden behind the scenes couldn't be accessed to correct the color. It would have been a top contender for some time to come. Love how big the battery is.
Have they ported cm7 to it yet? Are they still doing the 2nd init hack or has the bootloader been unlocked?

wasn't trying to upset you.
but if we're on that wave, if you're well aware of the problem and searching only netted you no new answers, what did you expect asking would do? net you more non-new answers.
The Atrix screen indeed makes everything a little "bluer" (are your yellows slightly green?).
I read that in CM7 you can alter the color scheme a little bit, or there's an app that can also do this...I'd have to search a little bit to find what I'm talking about, but I'll post a link in just a sec.
Edit: this is what I was thinking of...Might not be exactly what you're looking for, as it requires you to have CM7 it looks like (not that that's a bad thing, but of course it's still in pre-beta and you might not want to use it). It's a start though, and gives you a little more info.
It's an unfixable hardware "problem".
It not a huge deal (can't really tell a huge difference)

Worried about ICS

Isn't anyone else worried about how blue ICS is and about AMOLED burn in?
Meh, that's what themes are for. Plus as big a video guy as I am, (I'm a video engineer), the "lowered output over time" that many incorrectly call burn in, isn't enough to bother me.yes I can see it looking for it but again, amoled is just too friggen awesome to care. My epic still looked very good after a year of heavy, high brightness use. Also lowering brightness will slow this down but I say (w an extra battery) crank it and enjoy the expensive device you paid for!

ICS will have a blue status bar. The blue leds loose their brightness quicker than the red and green thus the bar being blue you get burn in effect although its not burnin but inproper degradation of the leds.
I'll probably have an S3 by then!

AFAIK Amoled degradation is non linear (like plasma) the first hunders hours it will degrade fast and then it will stabilize and even the blue leds (which has the shortest lifespan) will outlast the usefull life of your mobile easily (at least 4 years with 6 hours screen time a day)
IF color balance gets skewed by wearing out blue more than the other colors you can always readjust the balance, for example with chainFire's app

Actually I hate the black status, menus, etc. Why don't they use light colors?, I don't know. I much prefer the old android status bar color. At least the degradation was not that visible when using fullscreen apps. (I do browse a lot, and a large procent of pages have white background. Also most apps have white background).
I really do not understand Google why it doesn't give to the user a build-in simple color scheme editor, so you can easily change the system colors (such as statusbar, menu). Like it was on WM. You could change the status bar color via registry, no mess with pack/unpack/resign of framework blablabla. Oh my..

But anyway hope he finds his answers now and he stops worrying. after all we are a community to help each other...
Wow
Yeah, so, if your screen-on time can burn out the screen, before ambient humidity burns out the mainboard... you need to put your phone down before you get cancer LOL
Seriously, the half life of the pixels in AMOLED is a mean average 14,000 hours...
One year, seven months... that would be at FULL brightness, with the screen ON for the entire duration to hit the half life...
And you're WORRIED?! LMMFAO
Use your phone, love it, and stop worrying, you'll have a new phone before you notice pixel death.

Unless you use the "smart" features you don't know that for a fact. I have been using the smart features on and off for over a week, with the features / gimmicks on and running there isn't much battery drain at all.
While a lot of the features are gimmicks some are actually very useful.
Smart stay - (the best one out of all them, should be in stock Android)
Quick glance - (use this all time while it's on my desk or on a table)
Air view - (helps me dig through text messages fast and zoom in on some websites)
Air gesture - (I actually go in the gallery a lot and this makes browsing photos more fun and... natural? in a sense)
Palm motion - (use this all the time to answer phone calls and mute or pause music also use it to capture screenshots
Direct call - (I have to admit it's nice and very useful to just directly call someone while simply just moving the phone to your head while in the texting or contacts app)

I used Air View for a bit but it made my screen too sensitive which i used those specific programs.
besides that the only Air feature that i might turn on is Air Call Accept. And it only works during phone calls so its not bad.
The watchon TV controller thing is a bit weird. Doesnt work all the time..
Today I was eating lunch with my phone next to me. Got a call and used the gesture to answer and have the speaker turn on without me touching the phone. That was nice. Voice control camera is cool, but saying different things changes how the camera shoots. I'm still figuring that one out.
Thanks for the replies, none of these sounds useful to me.

Alright, i apologize for the snap judgement. Im fanatical about battery, and they do drain extra, which to me is unacceptable for what you get in exchange. Was much more impressed with the smart stay than any of the new ones, and depending on how many times you let the screen almost time out it can add a fairly substantial amount.
Your right, i should probably rephrase my 'hog' assessment, im probably more picky than others about battery. .

I can't figure out why it burns the battery so fast. I know folks will say, "then uninstall it stupid!", but I just wanted to make sure everyone has the same experience. I've loved live weather wallpaper of the sky (hate grassy fields etc) since my HTC thunderbolt days but this is the only live weather wallpaper besides Sense that I ever liked. Nobody else seemed to have answered your question so far. I can tell you definitively that I too had the same problem.
I too loved the graphics so I put up with the battery drain for a while. I read thru a lot of reviews and found some people commenting about battery life as well but those reviews were ignored by the developer. I couldn't find any solutions anywhere. I emailed the developer without getting any response back. Eventually I just gave up on the app.
The problem appears to be only with the live wallpaper portion of the app. I have used other live wallpapers but none drained battery like this one. Sometimes the log showed it even consumed more battery than the screen itself at full brightness. The phone would stay hot when I enable the live wallpaper of this app. So I came to the conclusion that it is just a poorly written app and the developer has no intention of fixing it. Which is a shame because I really liked the graphics.
If anyone knows a solution for this that would be great.

OK, that confirmed my experience. I don't get what is using so much power. The live wallpaper is far less active than others I've used in the past yet uses 10 times the power. Ugh. I wish a developer here would write something comparable that didn't use so much battery. Heck, even video live wallpaper doesn't use up the battery so fast.
I would think that 4 out of 5 reviews would say "makes my phone hot and drains my battery!"
Thanks for noticing. Nobody else was willing to actually discuss the issue.

I should have mentioned I am using the free version. Is the paid version any better?

The update fixed the problem. Battery use way down. Heavy, but comparable to other weather apps.

Really? Let me try it out. Thanks for the news.
I used the paid version. It was bad.
