Engadget's Review - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/28/samsung-galaxy-note-review/
Engadget just posted their review. It looks like they liked the device and as expected it's a faster GSII with a larger higher resolution screen and the s-pen is a nice addition to the device
No mention of battery life but it comes with a 2500mah battery
Engadget said:
PROS
Excellent performance
Enormous, high-res Super AMOLED display
S Pen is a clever, no-compromise addition
CONS
May be too large for some
Awkward to use as a telephone handset
S Pen button rather too small
BOTTOMLINE
Samsung's Galaxy Note is massively good but simply too massive for some.

most likely AT&T

Presumably the SGS2 scores higher in some of the graphics benchmarks only due to the much higher res of the note?

It will work with ATT and T Mobile. Look at the specifications on GSM and data bands.

I would just like to see a site comment on the simple things like how the phone handles one handed e.g can you text message one handed, reach the notification area with a thumb etc. Need some feedback on real world usability

I have rather small hands and reaching the notification bar with the thumb of the hand holding the Note is possible. But really comfortable are only operations on the lower screen half one handed. The opposite corner from the thumb is unreachable for me unless I change the position of the hand risking to drop the Note

Thanks for that, will need to get in store and play around. I really prefer this at the moment over the nexus but one handed operation is a tricky thing to imagine giving up!

im so sick of this...

...POS keyboard!!!!!
Am I stupid?
I thought the n1 had a bigger screen than the iphone and it has boggled my mind that its so so so so much easier to type on the iphone 3g and 3gs because that keyboard just looks and feels so much more spacious.
I just measured it and the damned iphone in fact does have a wider screen. I guess im an idiot but i thought the iphone was 3.5" and the n1 3.7", which i assumed to be diagonal meaning the n1 would be taller AND wider. The n1 has a taller screen by a negligible amount but a wider screen, which the inexplicably unbeatable iphone has, is far more useful. This phone was designed so long after the iphone why in the hell is such a basic feature not equaled much less improved? this is really embarrassing and no im not going to use some 3rd party keyboard, ive tried them but the problem is more the screen size and less the google software, which is definitely bested by the iphone in this department but size could have easily remedied it. just pitiful, for the first time since my g1 so long ago, im actually having to convince myself NOT to get the next iphone...
If you simply just look at screenshots of the devices side-by-side you can obviously tell the N1 is taller, while the iphone is WIDER - therefore the typing experience on the iphone is made better by that simple factor, not too much better, but I'm sure it helps.. (I just said that because I figured you would've looked at them being compared before purchasing the device) The typing experience on the iphone is also made better by the work that was put into the the on-screen keyboard, and the only Android one that can counter it in my opinion is the HTC_IME, or Swype. I'm also not a fan of the stock keyboard. (Maybe smart keyboard too.. or shapewriter.. hmm..)
If 3rd party keyboards are not working out for you, you'll simply have have to use the phone in landscape mode to maybe better your typing experience.
We just need HTC_IME for WVGA devices I find using the pixilated version of HTC_IME is better than the stock keyboard on the Nexus One.

Yes, but I believe the current one for the Nexus One goes off-screen, unless it has been corrected.
Swype in landscape mode isn't ideal anyways, I only use it portrait, where it shines the best.
And as for the HTC_IME.. wasn't it the Bravo we were going to steal that from?

Fair enough. There's a new voice to text app for the iPhone but I'm willing to bet Google's is more accurate.

Actually the 3/32nds of an inch difference isnt at all obvious to me by looking at screenshots. Plus coming from g1 and mytouch 3g I couldn't help myself wanting to see what android could do with adequate power, and boy is it impressive (other than the keyboard of course) And on second thought it must just be extremely superior software because that just doesn't seem like enough of a difference otherwise.
Google has the power to crank out a super keyboard in a day or two...whyyyyyyy Google why!?

Not what oyu asked for but Viewing screen is 3.7in for N1 vs iphone which is 3.5
actually if you put the two phone over each other and not side by side and compare of the width of the screens (NET WIDTH, not including bezel) i think both screens have the same width. the fact that the N1 is taller makes it look narrower.
Try it out with both screens turned on and you will see.

Actually I pulled out the old tape measure and the iPhone screen is definitely wider. Surprising I know, and it was just me and my buddy with the iPhone so I came here to complain because I didn't want him to think his phone had anything on my phone, not even for 1 second. Pretty petty of me but I can't help it , I love android!
I really don't know why people find it so difficult to type on the stock android keyboard. I've been using it for a while now - admittedly it took a few days to get used to typing on it, coming from an iPhone and Hero background, but still, I find typing on it a breeze! Even more so with Smart Keyboard Pro!
another vote for swype. i will never two-hand type again. i wish i could swype on my laptop

Google put in the speech to text with the Android keyboard - not HTC. HTC's IME (keyboard) does not have a button for speech to text AFAIK.

Note vs Nexus

I thought this was an interesting comparison -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36gO7BuzUxs
It's very close, but the Note does edge it, as I think you would expect.
I don't see the point in the comparison, a lot of it is based on the software and given the Note is getting ics that all immediately becomes invalid. I don't see it as extremely close when the Note has a faster CPU, much faster graphics card, expandable memory (a huge omission from the Nexus), much bigger battery, better camera, the stylus and a functioning volume rocker. The Nexus is slightly more pocket able (the smaller screen isn't an advantage for everyone though) and ice cream sandwich the latter of which will be matched when other phones get their upgrades. Personally I prefer a mature Android os for now with the option to upgrade later when ice cream sandwich is past its early teething issues.
I'm surprised so many corners were cut on the Nexus particularly when the piece hasn't been but more surprised that reviewers are OK with those chabges .
agreed
Also my vellamo score was much higher than the nexus. 985
Most of the benchmarks for the note on the internet seem very low.
Well,
I have the GN now, just sold my 2nd Note. Regardless of what the specification comparison is, the Nexus is just plain faster. Yes, the screen is fantastic on the Note. I don't know if you have had time to use an Iphone 4S, but the GN is like a giant screen version. The screen and speed make it a winner for me. ICS is nice, but it has some quirks / bugs to work out.
I would love a mini-tablet like the Note, same specs and a slightly larger screen.
So not sure what you are saying there.
Do you prefer the note or the Nexus?

Others have said this too. The only thing I would say, I had to disable a few tests as they weren't compatible with ICS at this point (the finger tests and network test I think for example). Others have said this did bring down their Note score somewhat, to around 700.

I have to say the Nexus wins for me.
Generally, in this case the decision of which device someone wants would be more about the size than the speed and fluidity of the interface anyway.

I would normally tend to agree here but for a lot of people the speed is quite important to a point where the speed makes a bigger difference than the screen estate. I don't think anyone would disagree about the Notes fabulous screen but as long as the GT-N7000 will have Samsung bloatware it will be slower than a device that's made by Samsung but regulated by Google (aka the Nexus phones).
I love my Note. I really do, but I also understand the people who
a) feel it's too big
b) feel the Nexus line more attracting
My only real quirk is the memory... how could Samsung (or Google) decide that for a phone of that magnitude 16gb (even less after the OS) is enough for people who both watch movies and listen to music on their phones.

I have thought about this too but the fact is that right now cloud services (mobile in particular)
a) don't give 100% coverage everywhere. With this I mean that 3g/4g still has lots of places to cover.
b) the best way to stream is LTS = super high battery usage
The idea of having your stuff etc. in the cloud is very nice but it's still a few years from being implemented so that it can be used in a regular basis and without eating your devices battery flat in 2 hours. As of now internal memory is still quite important especially for music and video lovers and the new Nexus is a big fail in this department. Such a shame considering the quality of the screen

edited to note about the coverage of mobile internet
The note is the better phone.
Great comparison ,cheers for the video.
your comparison will help if there r people who would still say that the nexus was hardware lacking , so in other words , its a proof that they r almost on par and its only the ICS vs gingerbread here that made the difference.
so yeah , knowing Samsung "promised" ICS in early 2012 , then the choice between 2 devices would be a matter of taste and more physical and design related.
Very Good ! Thanks for the Review, maybe I can find my decibel meter and light meter and send you some real tools. The sound and light aren't really all that important, in the samsung codes you can re-adjust them over max or min. settings.
Like I said before, the Note with ICS would be the Ultimate Beast... but we will know soon enough on that.
The other thing I think will tell us more ...is when we get more custom roms.... then we will see the flexibility and strength of these two devices....
Thank you once again, for the review
You can't compare a phone with ICS to a phone without ICS.
Even WITH ICS, the Nexus is inferior in every way. The 1.2ghz Exynos is outdated, it's got a weak GPU, NO expandable memory (like iphones), and a small baby-like screen.
To the people who compared the Note vs. Nexus, you obviously didn't tweak the Note.
The Nexus has ICS, which basicly means most of everything is optimized and tweaked, the Note is on 2.3.6... you can't compare the two until you tweak it.
Fact of the matter is, the only people who prefer the Nexus are the people who can't handle the size of the Note.
I agree with others...
I don't see the point of these tests. When you're running different operating systems, and you know the Note will get ICS at some point, are these results relevant.
Also, with such close scores, it reinforces that these test are rather useless. I did not expect huge discrepancies and this is what we saw.
The debate about the Nexus, and others, when compare to the Note is size and functionality. Are people willing to trade convenience for size? I don't think there is a right or wrong answer it's such a personal choice.
I'm getting the Note but it was difficult decision and I would have loved to get both honestly but I can't justify the extra expense and prefer to do something else with my money.
I appreciate the effort but it left indifferent and frankly not better informed on either device.
I have both the Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy note and I would say that the Note is the better one of the two devices. ICS will be great on the Note.

i agree with you as a consumer. I was thinking that maybe from a company perspective, they may see it as an opportunity to attract customers to their cloud services.
although truly I believe that its more that the nexus is a reference device, and future iterations of the Galaxy S line is where the real innovations will be made - as with the Galaxy SII compared to the Nexus S of last year
im not sure if the nexus has it, you can complain about the bloatware but i know i have already got rid of mine, and prefer a little that came with it, my browser was high 900s too. i was on the fence and by far i know the GN is the better of the two choices even without ICS, with it? hmpf, not a chance

"GN" is a bit ambiguous in this context.

Does the Note allow better or worse functionality ?

Assuming these are my main usages:
- Internet browsing.
- Messaging/email.
- Runkeeper.
- GPS navigation.
- Camera.
- Phone
Do you find that a device like the Note 3 will allow me to get things done quicker than on a regular cellphone ?
What day to day functional things can you do with the Note line that you can't do as easily with regular cellphones ?
Thanks!
Well the larger screen makes it nicer for using it to smash larger bugs.

Ok, but the LG G2 has similar battery life to the Note 3 (if not better). And the G2 is much easier to carry than N3 (5.2" screen and only 140 grams).
What will be better with the N3 in comparison to the G2 ? the only thing I can really say is the S-Pen, the question is how much do most people do with the S-Pen ?

One hand, You say?
What's the point of a G2? 1080p full HD... and no expandable storage. It comes with 32GB max. Between the HD package data for all games and apps, and the 13MP camera, you'll have your main storage full within a day. Meaning you won't have any space left for videos and music.
Utterly useless. A phone without expandable storage is, to me, not even worth a second thought.

Ask this question to every woman with a smartphone. Even the S3, which is the most sold phone ever, is too large for us to use comfortably with one hand.
You don't hear us complaining, do you?
I much prefer the large screen over comfortable use with one hand (which I can't above 4.3"anyway). Typing, gaming, reading, watching and drawing is much easier on a larger screen.

Post your personal S6E reviews

:highfive: congrats to those who have it early.
so tell us what you think about it, the feel on the hand, how fragile does it look and feel (is it slippery like the sony phones with glass, grippy?) , hows the performance of the camera, screen, battery, etc.
It's only been half a day but my early impressions are as follows,
-Fingerprint scanner is wicked fast.
-Screen is beautiful
-It is fast fast fast. I love Samsung devices and I admit that lag was always an issue. I have not been able to slow it down yet. Really I havent. Lol. Even the recent app switcher is fast.
-Like the themeing a lot. I can't wait for more themes.
-Feels good on the hand. The edge does make it a bit different to hold but I love the curved screen. Makes using the phone a pleasure.
-I have only taken a couple pictures but they turned out great. More on that later.
I'm sure I'll have more as the days pass..
I played with the phone in a T mobile store. For about 20 minutes battery was down to 93% from 100%.,Power hungry. Could you guys confirm?
Also I found the browser cannot hide the status bar hence no full screen browsing. Please also confirm this?
S6 edge in the bestbuy which is unbranded has no ability to sort the menu alphabetically. But T mobile edge has an option to sort.
You're correct on the status bar. Too early to know on the battery. The option to sort might have come in the software update that dropped today. Not sure though.

From a performance point of view there is no doubt in my mind the Edge is going to be great, the only doubt is battery life... I realise its a bit early for conclusions yet but once people have used their phones for a week or so, its the questions that everyone wants answering. Everyone's use patterns are different but as long as I can make it through a heavyish day ok, I'll be happy with that.

It's battery is only 7% less in capacity than S5, so I see no reason why battery life would be extremely different. The screen has higher res, but CPU is much more power efficient.

I have pre-ordered it as well, but it is still 2 weeks before shipping. We will all see in due time. People in the US are already getting theirs, so we should have some info within a week as batteries start working normally after a few charges.
Also could you guys confirm available free memory?
I went to Best Buy yesterday to get a look at the S6 edge. Needless to say, I was very impressed. Touchwiz seems lightning fast compared to 4.3 on my S4. The shortcuts and ease of access really convinced me to buy this (when green comes along). The edge display looks absolutely amazing and does, in fact, feel more immersive. I love the metal frame and the new headphone jack location. Basically, this thing looks and feels all-around perfect. The black looks BLACK in person, whereas online it gave me the belief that it was a deep-blue. Don't know if I want to settle for the white 32GB or wait a month or two in hopes of the green appearing.

I was not aware the screen would be more efficient with that much higher resolution, but that is a good thing to know as well. Might mean all this whining about smaller battery size is just for the sake of whining.
Thanks for your answers guys. Today again I walked into Best buy and T mobile stores to do my research more. What I found,
Battery: Yesterday when I played with the phone I suspected it to be Power hungry. But I think I should take it back. Battery is ok not bad after all. I am comparing with my LG G2(has a good battery, 3000mah) and I measured the time it takes to drop every %. S6 takes a little more time than the G2 to drop which tells me the battery is good. Also the picture below. I don't have an S5 so I can't really compare with that. I played a couple of games that were installed on the phone and the battery is still ok. This is by no means a scientific way of measuring, neverthless I wanted to share this with you guys.
Although I have chargers at home, car and work still a good battery(if not the best) gives a sense of confidence. and satisfaction that I have the best phone irrespective of all the breath taking features. Don't you agree?? S6 may not disappoint I believe.
Browser/Browsing: Browsing is a breeze. No sense of lag anywhere. But the status bar doesn't hide which I assume is a part of Lollipop. I would be curious to see if a dev can come up with a mod. A full screen immersive browsing on the S6 's beautiful screen would be super cool.
Youtube/Video: Flawless like its predecessors. Nothing special to mention.
Music: Flawless sound like its predecessors. No distortion. Sound is very clean with the headphones. I listen to a lot of Music and sound quality is very important for me. When I played the music on speaker I felt some vibration I wonder what that is??? I wonder if it is the speaker giving the vibration.
Menu:Arrangement of the apps in the menu is nice and simple although I would prefer the icons to be a little smaller. T mobile phones come with an option to sort alphabetically. AT&T don't have the phone for display yet(Slackers:crying so can't tell. All in all I like this new menu. No complaints.
GPS: I didn't spend a lot of time here but I thought it locked quick enough. Nothing special and no complaints.
Screen Quality : I thought the screen is much better than S5 (in the store) and on par with the note 4. But my G2 has a different color temperature which I believe make whites look a little bluish where as S6 whites are yellowish. To me both are ok. But I really have to admit the additional pixels on S6 make no difference in picture quality (S6 vs G2). Really a 1080p screen would have been enough. To clarify I am not complaining, just my opinion. Viewing angles are good unlike G2 (LG's for that matter).
I have to tell you, normal people passing by with no phone knowledge would stop by and take a glimpse at the edge screen, They all seem to like it. Seems like edge is getting all the attention it deserves.
Build/Design: This is where S6 edge outshines every other phone in the market. In my opinion, till date this the best design ever period. I have seen some complaints about finger prints. It is not bad after all. Looks like white takes less finger prints than others. Excellent build quality and feels solid in hands. Thums up.
Single handed use: It can be used single handed with no issues. Menu is set up for single hand use which I really like. Although my hand is not very big it fit nicely in my hand. Not sure about the non-edge S6. Should be the same.
Speed This is one thing that is very crucial. All android phones I used so far tend to be fast initially but as I go adding/deleting apps and other files phone tends to get laggy. It really gets on my nerves. But even as a brand new phone they stutter at times. But with S6 it is blazing fast. No lag anywhere (at least I did not see). App drawer is a little slow to open. Samsung probably configured it to be slower on purpose. Some might misunderstand it to be a lag, just a heads up. Speed speed speed is what it is.
Camera: I need not specially tell you about the camera. There are expert reviews which claim this to be the best camera. Flawless. Double press on the menu opens the camera in split seconds which is very impressive.
I care less about the heart rate sensor so did not test it. Although I care about finger print scanner I could not test it because it is not my phone.
This is a big leap forward not just for Samsung but for android as a whole.
I was disappointed about the battery yesterday but liked it today and took some time to test all the features. I like the phone, will get one. White Color 32gb. AT&T.

I think he meant the true amount of RAM available. (Should be less than 3 GB)
Status bar maybe due to Lollipop. Its present on my Pure Edition Moto X and my Atrix HD running CM12.

S7 Edge - scrolling behaviour

Given the reports of lag and stutter persisting in this new line of Galaxy devices, it would be great to see some evidence of it.
I made a similar thread last year for the Note 5 http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/general/note-5-scrolling-behaviour-t3195672
Please upload screenshots of your S7E with Profile GPU rendering in the Developer options enabled to see the performance and smoothness of this device!

There is a horizontal line which is the 60 fps limit (i.e. the limit for a stutter free UI experience). If the bars stay under this line, all is good. If they shoot over it, it can be perceived as stutter. An occasional spike is not too bad, but when you have a lot of spikes it definitely correlates with stuttering in the UI.
You can see in my graphs that my trusty OnePlus One offers a much smoother UI experience than my Note 5. Was wondering if the new line-up is better in any way. Based on the XDA article I don't have high hopes...
If you're having problems with UI turn on GPU acceleration and see if that helps.
Just a few screens, both were taken after scrolling around several times. It's kind of odd because it seemed like every time I stopped scrolling it would spike once it stopped. Probably fine. I also should note that those bars actually seemed to reduce performance in a few areas, such as when using keyboard. It would probably be more accurate to use the adb method so the GPU isn't drawing all of the graphs ontop of the ui. Ty for telling me about this though. Will probably come in handy for testing kernel changes in real-time.
@Xileforce Can you try in some apps? Main culprits before were YouTube and app store.

Here ya go. Tho I must say idk what it is, but the homepage of the playstore hasn't scrolled super smooth for me on a single device.
The playstore doesnt cache thatz why it will lag on every device

That looks encouraging! So in your experience, are large spikes (that reach up to the top of the phone almost) rare?

The only time I saw huge spikes was usually right when launching an app or when scrolling for the first time on play store while the stuff was still loading.
Dude why isn't this function more talked about???? This should be part of every reviewers set of tools when reviewing new phones! Why in the world isn't it?? This is the very first time I've seen this little utility and I've been on android since the beginning LOL...wow. This also offers freaking objective evidence on something that has always been a subjective measurement that a lot of Samsung die-hards simply don't want to admit exists. I just ran this on my verizon S6 still on 5.1.1 and I'm sure you can imagine the horror...from what the above poster put up it would appear things are possibly improving with the S7 but one could take a screen cap at a good moment and miss some of the spikes.
I'm not sure if using this measurement tool has me more excited or more mad about what samsung offers as flagship material but it at least gives me a baseline for comparison now, thanks man! I'll be running this like crazy when my S7E comes in and will definitely update with my results.

It can drive you mad though In the beginning with my Note 5 the frame dropping was really bugging me, cause my previous device had been super smooth (OnePlus One). This function just rubs it in
