I would if I had an extra $500(?).

I'd rather have my testicles removed.

No. Well. No.

Not NO, but HELL NO!!! Why would you go to a closed source, locked down piece of junk. Nexus Prime all the way!

HAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA
even if it wasn't locked down, still HELL NO!!!
silly iphanboys must really be hiding their hate for apple right now, releasing such a minor update into the same phone from 1 year ago.

Not a chance in hell. I'm happy to see Apple sticking to their ways and just doing a bs product refresh with a couple "new" features or upgrades. Its amazing how a company can get so many idiots to buy their "new" phone. I was amazed how many idiots went from a iphone 3g to a 3gs and im sure tons will do the same here too.

The 3GS was a significant improvement to the 3G. In the realm of phones it wasn't groundbreaking, but it was a big upgrade.

Personally I'm a little annoyed at the amount of threads that are opened up asking "are you going to ____ phone?"
I would vote for a ban on anyone that opens up these threads.

Well, I agree on the OS front android is still the better and iOS 4 is trying to do a catch up. But, I have to hand it to the iPhone 4 hardware , it does look amazing.
I like the 720p recording and retina display... But the OS still sucks. If only we could get developers to make GOOD apps, not some half-baked ones.
The hardware specs being released in the new iPhone is way way better than the n1. I'm actually jealous because of the front facing camera. And the new display resolution is unreal.

The only thing that may have the EVO 4g beat is the processor, but I'd bet my left arm that snapdragon + JIT > an A4
720p at 30 FPS, Retina display, Gyro motion, 7 hours talk time. 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of WiFi browsing, 10 hours of video. 40 hours of music. 300 hours of standby, A4 processor, 32 GB internal storage, 9.3mm thick, etc, etc.
No one can dispute that the new iPhone is the best phone from a hardware standpoint. This phone is also going to take mobile gaming to a whole new level. I'd still much rather prefer Android OS, but as a fan of technology in general I have to say that Apple stepped their game up with this phone. Android app development will have to continue to grow at a rapid pace to keep up.
It is the highest res I've heard of for a phone. But it isn't that much more than the N1. Just the next step I guess. The N1 has about 250 or 260 DPI, right?

I thought it was just under 270. Jobs himself said it doesn't matter past 300 anyways.

The resolution of the screen is something I am jeleous of, but the size is still smaller than the n1.
I'd like to see some benchmarks because we all know the 2.2 Nexus One was running laps around an iPad!
I'll admit there were some things that had me think "darn I wish my phone could do that" and then I remembered how awesome push to phone is.

Can't wait till someone make FroYo run on iPhone 4.
Steve says the screen of iphon4 is 4x bette than 3gs. uuhm did you ever compared 3gs screen with n1? the N1 is also 4x better than 3gs. so i'm not really jalous at that.
The OS doesn't ad somethin that i can say WOW! what comes to ios4 we have it on android. even they failed with connection on 4g everyone had to turn off wifi, the 3gs loaded fine :S whahahha
though the battery life looks great
the new (unreleased) iPhone does have a higher res screen, better video camera (could be just software/drivers) and the new gyroscope sensor. However iOS4 is still way behind Android
Our 6 month old Nexus has a bigger size screen
lol @ "retina display", apple sure is good at creating new buzz words which the flock absorbs and repeats. (baaaa)
I wish Sony had stepped up to Googles offer of collaborating on a phone.
Too bad there aren't any Android phones coming out with a res to match or exceed the iDont4 (960x640)
Yup the resolution on the screen looks sick, but it' just too smal. After having 2 phones with 3.7" displays I can't go down to 3.5". My next phone will probably have a 4" or bigger screen anways.
The hardware on the new iphone is very slick though.
yes the screen is better (higher res), and yes there is a front facing camera.
its been 5 month and our phone is just as competitive, hardware wise, as it was when it was released.
on the OS side, there is no comparison. apple was not ready for froyo. they have lots of catching up to do. i still think the iOS 4 (lol) is stuck in 2007.
not really that impressed.
The "iphone 4" does have by far the best video camera I have ever seen on a phone. I am actually very surprised by how good the still pictures of it look.
The overall question is though, did the iphone 4 with iOS 4 beat what google did weeks ago with the 2.2 Froyo Nexus 1? I don't think so, but even though that was shown off 3 weeks ago (seriously google WTF!?) I got a feeling you will be able to buy an iphone 4 before you can get the "official" Froyo OTA update.
OK.....I want the face to face calling...that's about it.
No one will use that crap face time because everyone is obsessed about battery time. Rofl.

seriously i'm kind of sad that this is all the iphone has done. they barely advanced the arms race.
video calling with iphones only? only on wifi?
video calling has existed in some places in europe since 2006, and there is a reason why its not widespread, people dont care about video calls.
One thing for sure...Apple is still good at creating 'Eye Candy'.

How many ppl are going to return EVO 4G for iPhone 4?

Now, we know everything about the new iPhone 4, how many ppl here are thinking of/not interested in iPhone 4?
Just curious!
We didn't really learn anything new about the iphone 4 that wasn't already known hardware or software-wise. I'm not sure why someone would return the evo unless they just always want the last phone to come out. If you like iphone os, get iphone 4... if you like android, get the EVO. it's that simple

Okay so did you know...
1. It has one of the best resolutions right now
2. it records HD 720p videos with 30fps with flash
3. video editing can be done on iPhone 4 using iPhone iMovie
4. about the metal frames were actually antenna's for different radios that may boost your signal strength for respective radio
5. it comes with 802.11n Wi-Fi, a gyroscope to detect motion on 6 axes
.....so on...

1. This was known from the leaked versions. The resolution is very high, but as stated even by Steve Jobs at the keynote that the DPI is higher than the human eye can tell. The IPS screen is beautiful, but it's not a deal breaker for me.
2. 20fps, 30fps, big whoop. I have a Canon 7D which records 1080p @ 30fps and 720p @ 60fps, so I won't be using my Evo's video camera that much to begin with.
3. That is neat, but video editing on such a small screen?
4. Was not entirely known, but is that really a deal breaker again? It is a stroke of genius, though.
5. The Evo has 802.11n (the Broadcom chipset is BT + 802.11b/g/n), drivers are just not supporting it fully yet (although the Nexus has it, I believe).
Other things..
FaceTime? Looks very nice, but it's iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 only.. I used Fring to Skype chat this morning from my phone. The receiving end was on a Macbook.
iAds? Great for developers
I can't think of anything else that stood out.
i am keeping my EVO i like it a lot.
- bigger screen
- 4G
- unlimited data
- 8 mp cam (although the backlight looked interesting)
- Froyo and the next version that will be even better
- flash
...do I need to continue?

I look at it like Sprint and HTC was 2 steps ahead of Apple and ATT
i mean come on. you would think the iphone would be that game changing phone. But the Evo just bought all that stuff before them
1. 720P recording, HDMI output also
2.Big a$$ screen perfect for watching HQ movies and what not
3.First 4G Phone to run 4G networks where 4G is in the market
4.Front facing camera for video calling and 8MP camera on the back for all your 720P videos and Hi res pics
5.Running the best open source OS that will always be open source. unlike the iphone we dont have to wait months or years to find a way to root or hack
6.You dont have to be sucked in ATT high a$$ phone bill
This phone does all of this. and the iphone brings nothing new to me now. its just a few upgrades again. but im not a fanboy or a hater. i got apple products and got a att contract
I want to make a note to everyone pointing out the 8MP camera. Megapixels just affects the size of the image, not the quality. I am fairly sure that the iPhone's camera is of higher quality but has smaller images.
That being said, I'm very happy with the Evo.
Team Evo.
No surprise with the iPhone announcement today.
Everything I have read was right on.
Apple was the one playing catch up with the Android OS and the Evo.
And after spending just couple of days with the Evo's 4.3 inch screen, every other phone is just small as hell.
AND why would you leave Sprint's plan and start a new contract with ATT and their 2GB data plan?

Couldnt agree with you more! The whole Netflix thing is going to be awesome for AT&T customers... Do people not realize how fast you will burn through 2GB when watching video. I got my EVO on Friday and just over the weekend I have already used over 300MB and I have not done any extreme amount of surfing or video watching...just a few youtube videos and various other stuff.... Using Netflix will burn through the 2GB in no time at all....I will laugh at all the people that end up with an extra $100 on their bill and then when they try to cancel their contract to go to Sprint or Verizon have to pay a new $325 cancelation fee.... GO AT&T/APPLE
man i helped my friend who i sold my hero to flash a new rom... and i put my evo down picked up the hero and was like omg this thing is tiny..... cant believe i ever used a phone that small.
Couldn't imagine many people with a brain going from the EVO to an iPhone (of course there's still the sheep that would buy the air we breath if Steve Job's told them to):
EVO:
- Unlimited data/mo
- 4.3' screen
- Android openness
- Replaceable battery
- Kickstand
- Video calling over cellular data
- Free turn by turn navigation + Google voice for free text messaging
- 4g
- Emulators
iPhone:
- 2gb data/mo
- 3.5' screen
- iOS 4 (locked down by apple)
- Non-replaceable battery
- No kickstand
- Video calling ONLY to other iPhone 4 users and ONLY over wifi
- Free Google applications blocked just so Apple can make more money
- 3g on a network that is so bad they hogtie their customers with a 2gb limit
- Emulators blocked
To me the choice is rather easy...

The people who selected "Bought EVO 4G and returning it soon for iPhone 4!" should post pics of the Evo to prove they acctually own one. 5 seems too high to me
Evo is an awsome phone as is the iPhone 4. Seems like iPhone users are the ones making the switch and not the other way around
I'm wondering, did they decide to put the metal ring around it act as an antenae to help improve the phones signal on ATT's crappy network? I thought the best part of the WWDC event was when Job's was trying to demo the unit and couldn't get a cellular or wifi connection... then asking all the media folks to turn off their laptops and data connections... that was absolutely hillarious!
I imagine the antenna thing is probably mostly a gimmick, similar to how apple pretends their "backlit sensor" is unique to their camera; in reality most phones with newer omnivision chips (read: the evo and other good recent smartphones) have the same feature. Jobs is a master of making the mundane sound phenomenal (although that's not to do say the new iphone doesn't have great hardware, it's just not groundbreaking in some of the ways he'd like us to believe)
If it was any other carrier then AT&T, I would consider switching..
But - the EVO's got two big things going for it vs. the iphone - 1) screen size, 2) sprint.
The only thing that the iPhone 4g has that I'm a little jealous of is potentially better battery life. (but.. my battery life on the evo is good enough.. 10-12hours with moderate usage..)

There's also a downside to the iPhone's battery: You cannot replace it if it goes bad, and you cannot upgrade to an extended version if it doesn't last long enough.

A few more days to decide if i keep Sprint EVO or go with TMo G2

(I posted this over at the TMo forum, but figured I might get some more suggestions/help here).
I have the Sprint EVO on the everything plan and it gives me 450 minutes to any landline. All cell to cell calls are included. I pay $80/month and that includes all SMS, data and navigation.
I have a few days before my 30 days are up to decide if I stick with it or go with something else.
I have never had a CDMA phone before. My only concern is if I trash/drop the phone it my kids drop it in the toilet, then I have to purchase another CDMA unit. If I go with TMo, and I trash a phone, I can put the SIM in any of my unlocked GSM phones. I've always used ATT but now am considering the new G2 on TMo.
Would appreciate any advice/suggestions.
Do I keep the EVO and the pretty decent plan, or go to TMo before my window of return closes for two years?
My needs are not huge, but father-in-law has very kindly agreed to pay the monthly bill, so that is a big help.
I do surf the net a fair bit (Facebook, few blogs, search for directions, phone numbers etc, but not excessive.
Talk: just the normal calls to family (i'll be home at 6pm, can you pick up milk etc.) and then the odd 20+ minute call to a friend every now and again. My biggest thing with regards to calling (landlines, businesses or other cellphones) is I don't want to have to look at a clock and wonder if I can call now or wait ½ an hour until a certain time of the day or be concerned what network they are on — just want to be able to pick up the phone and call whenever I need to, as I don't have a landline.
Used to be with ATT, but want a change. ATT often cripples their phones by barring features (e.g. on wife's ATT Samsung Captivate, you can't install non-market APKs because the Unknown Sources checkbox option has been removed).
So far, my experience with the EVO and Sprint has been decent. EVO battery isn't exactly stellar.
I have thoroughly enjoyed switching to an Android phone and want to stay.
PS - In San Diego area if that will help regarding coverage
I will preface this by saying I am a former T-mo customer of 10 years. I don't have anything negative to say about T-mo, they have always taken care of me. I will say that the choice of phones recently (specifically android was sparse) because they were resting on the laurels of the G1 and then went in on the Nexus One Sales fiasco.
That aside, the plan is a good deal, and although they claim "really" unlimited data, I think it was shown that it is capped at 5GBs. But considering your internet use that isn't bad. I will say that likely your Sprint plan would be cheaper. As far as the G2 goes, I haven't done a lot of reading on it, but I think it is actually inferior to the EVO. Additionally, while you could get the Nexus One as well, I think even it is getting long in the tooth. You could also opt for the Samsung Captivate?Facinate? I get all the names messed up.
If your only gripe with the EVO is the battery, then I would recommend the Seidio 3500mAh battery. You won't regret it. You will never complain about the battery again. I think moving to Tmo for the G2 will probably be a mistake, however GSM phones are nice because as you pointed out, if you have a non-smart phone already, you can always downgrade your plan and then just stick your sim card into the G1 and use Wifi. I hope that helps.
How did you get your father in law to pay for your bill?
Better yet, why would you even consider letting him pay for your phone bill?
And as far as your post: I have an Evo. I would trade it for a G2 in a heartbeat.
Tmobile does not have the best track record for reception though - keep that in mind. While they are cheaper and offer some pretty slick phones it comes at a price. If you get great reception in your area with tmo then do it. If not, what is the point in getting a smart phone?
Spotty 3g coverage here in St. Louis for t-mobile made it an easy decision for me. Love my Evo.

Ok, that is a very condescending statement. Maybe it was a gift? Maybe His father has his whole family on one plan at a discount? He probably wouldn't even have bought this phone if he had to pay for it himself?
Ok, now that that is out of the way.
Why would you trade the EVO for the G2 in a heartbeat? I looked up the G2 and what I see is a hybrid Nexus One/G1 mashup. It looks kind of nice, but having used the G1 for two years, let me be the first to say, the only thing to fail on the G1 for me was the keyboard. Don't get me wrong, I do miss it, but it is the weak link. Four co-workers also owned the G1 and all of them had multiple keyboard failures.
5MP camera? That is going backwards. 3.7" Screen... again, going backwards. I didn't see an HDMI out (not that this currently gets much use). It is my understanding that this is supposed to sport the 800Mhz Snapdragon, although that must be wrong, thats like triple strike.
The only reason I could see getting the G2 is if you want a hard keyboarded Nexus One... and if thats the case, samsung makes the epic. As far as I see, it is inferior to the EVO in every way. Oh.... and assuredly it also has poor battery life, so add an extended battery just like I did on the G1 and the EVO and then it looses its "thin/sexy" appeal.
I am not sold. To me this is just Tmo trying to get a leg up on the EVO and failing. "4G LIKE SPEEDS"? Whats that all about? My friends use their HDSPA+ (sp.) and are getting like 2Mbps down. Not all that impressed. I can get 6.5Mbps on 4G.
Thats my opinion and I am sticking too it.

Long story, but basically someone in the family canceled our (previous) ATT contract without telling us (messy family dynamics). One day we had cell signal and then all of a sudden, nothing. I think it was his way to make things right and help, even though he wasn't at fault - phone was a gift!
I do appreciate the helpful input on how you folks are using your devices and what is good or not good.
I recently bought my sister the My Touch Slide and the rep told me we had 3g coverage where we lived but once we got home it had a big E on the data icon but full bars for service. I kept looking for a 2g/3g switch thinking it was auto 2g cause after all the phone had full almost perfect reception. But after looking I called T-mobile and found out almost the entire state I live in does not have 3g coverage. No wonder no one uses T-mobile around here. I was very pissed at the sales rep for lying or just not knowing. He kept trying to sign us up for an iPhone and I almost told him to shove it up his.... but how can they still not have 3g here? The other cell companies do. Including the ones smaller than T-Mobile. Anyways, I would be sure to check coverage. Any phone will have poor battery life if it has poor reception. Typing this got me pissed again LOL
Sent from my iPhone with the bigger Gee Bees.
Phone wise, I'd take the G2 over the EVO 4G.
I've seen people get 3-4 Mbps over T-Mo's HSPA+ network on a Nexus One which ISN'T a HSPA+ phone. I have no idea what people are getting with the G2 (which is HSPA+) but I saw a Android Central post showing 15 Mbps. Either way, T-Mo is claiming up to 21 Mbps which is a good bit faster than Clear/Sprint's WiMax max of 10 Mbps. So for now, it seems like HSPA+ on the G2 is faster.
The G2 also has a nice looking hardware keyboard, and even after using the EVO (which has a large screen and thus large on screen keyboard +Swype) and the iPhone (which has the best standard on screen keyboard IMO), I'd still rather have a hardware keyboard to type out longer emails.
Processor wise, it's a no contest, the G2 is better. I've seen videos of it running a live wall paper + the 3D app drawer with buttery frame rates -- something the EVO CAN'T DO. And of course gaming is also going to be a lot better.
Software wise it has two big things: 1) it's close to stock and I prefer stock over anything, and 2) Cyanogen is already claiming support and I believe it's actually going to be his day to day phone. So expect it to get speedy updates.
It's pretty much a upgraded Nexus One with a hardware keyboard which is.. great. The EVO has one big upside:it's 4.3" display; but otherwise it's a old phone (2009 specs) with a couple of novelty benefits (HDMI, Kick stand, FF cam).

That 800 MHz Snapdragon is a 2nd generation Snapdragon which is not only faster but also more energy efficient than the 1 GHz one on the EVO. The GPU alone is somewhere around 3 times more powerful.

The G2 to me is a downgrade. No HDMI out, no video calling, smaller screen, slower processor, lower camera, flash ready but not enabled (correct me if its already been enabled) more expensive/month/features included in plan. I would get the Nexus if you're sticking with Tmo.

Actual Test Tmo G2 vs. Sprint 4G. As far as fluidity, What I am seeing is no real difference in App speeds. Where you see the difference is while using the Sense UI vs. Stock Froyo 2.2. I think that all of us HTC Android owners are already aware of the Sense Laggy-ness vs. Stock Froyo. Its a trade off for looks vs. function.

HDMI is a niche feature that people barely if at all ever use. Video calling, until Skype VIDEO chat comes back (or Google video shat comes) it's also pretty useless. Smaller screen is a preference thing, but as I said, I prefer the larger screen.
The processor is absolutely faster and better -- IT IS NOT SLOWER. Clock speed doesn't always equal better, and this is one of the cases when it doesn't. The benchmarks show this. The Snapdragon on the EVO is a old CPU/GPU that dates back to the HD2 in 2009.
Flash as in Adobe Flash? It launches with 2.2 so of course it's there; and not only is it there, but it's probably better or going to be better than on the EVO. The Adreno 205 on the G2 has Flash hardware acceleration, the EVO's GPU doesn't. That means better performance and less battery drain when viewing flash video.
T-Mo's off contract plans are way better. If you can stomach paying the up front cost of a phone, it's as cheap as Sprint over the long run.
Why would should anyone get a Nexus One over the G2? G2: Nexus One + better CPU/GPU, hardware keyboard, HSPA+ ready.

It doesn't matter. There are still Sense services running in the background taking up RAM and CPU time. Plus all the Sense apps (contacts/phone/etc) are just as slow as the Sense launcher compared to it's AOSP counterparts.
Going to tmobile from Sprint is like going from a Corvette ZR1 to a v6 Camaro for me. Worst service ive ever had reception wise by FAR. Dead spots everywhere, no 3G half the time... it was just unbearable. Couldnt use my phone inside of the house... I just cant do it. Their HSPA claims are nice, but thats when you actually have 3G. Honestly, here in Atlanta I think metro has better coverage than Tmobile.
And I keep hearing how this HSPA is supposed to be so much better than Sprints 4G.. but out of all of the Nexus and G2 owners i've tested against here in Atlanta not a single ONE of them could get over 3-5 megs down constantly while I drew 10-12 regularly. As far as "faster processor".. honestly its a phone, I could care less about 12 thousandths of a second difference in opening an app.
Video chat is useless without skype? Thats your opinion and you're entitled to it but thats just silly. I use fring and now the new video chat app with plenty of my friends with the evo, epic AND the iphone 4 pretty much everyday. It's easy to say its useless when its a feature your phone doesnt have. Keyboard? Dont need it... with swype and shapewriter im just as fast as I was with physical keys on the typing... plus HTC has been KNOWN to be sketchy in the department of sliders with the whole chord seperation fiasco of the TP1 and the keyboard issues of the TP2... I had both.
There is basically nothing about the G2 that'd make me choose it over the evo but its all a matter of preference. But the fact that its on tmobile pretty much seals the deal that ill NEVER have one. Only way id leave Sprint service wise is Verizon.
Service/Coverage varies from place to place -- Sprint sucks in some places too. It's up to you to find out which one is best in your area.
As for the CPU/GPU issue: It just reminds me of some of my past experiences with other products. I remember getting a convertible Vista tablet a while back. It had pretty good specs but the GPU turned out to be crap. I never intended to game on it but even though everything else ran perfectly, anything dealing with Aero was choppy. It was annoying. I bought a pretty expensive tablet and the least I'd expected was for the OS UI animations to run smooth.
I experienced the same thing on the EVO. I don't game much, but UI stuff like live wall papers and 3D app drawers cause the EVO to crawl. It isn't TOO bad right now but what if Gingerbread finally brings GPU acceleration and a more animated UI? Can we expect the EVO/first gen Snapdragon to keep up? I'm not too confident.
I like mine since I can swap my coverage to verizon when sprint is weak in reception while traveling
But thats the thing... I know phones are regional but I had tmobile while I was in DC, New Orleans, Birmingham and LA and had reception issues in every spot. Traveling on I-10 from Mobile to New Orleans was a tragedy with my reception.
Honestly you should go with whatever carrier has the best reception in your area. Would really be bad to be locked into a contract and have to outside to make calls.
I would go back to t mobile if they pick of their service. Buts thats for me and my area. Android phones are becoming so replaceable since all the new ones are high powered and they all do the same things. You should really only concern yourself with service and price

So I don't see cdma radio support. So this means it's not coming to Verizon? I'm looking to buy a phone soon this year on Verizon but I don't want anything that is out right now so I'm waiting to see what's going to be released.
I hate how they keep everything a mystery with phones.

No CDMA phones from Sony right now. Verizon and Sprint are quite backwards, CDMA is in all ways inferior to GSM. It's also too small a market to be interesting to invest in for Sony right now.

You know, your post is really helpful, but for this line. Why is everyone on the Z Forums comparing it with some other phone? As if the Android/ iOS war wasnt silly enough, we now have Android/ Android wars
EDIT: Why don't you make the features into a tabular format. Maybe include the ZL to the side too? Many (like me ) are considering the ZL too.

Yes, the quad A15 will be more powerful and I'm fully aware of that. However the reasons I won't buy a samsung today will still be the same when the s4 arrives (stupid plastic build, screwed up/non-existent source, terrible dev support). Some things are just more important outright power - and the S4pro is still very powerful.

Not without being on America's number one network.
If you mean you need CDMA I fear they give very few damns to something that adds complexity with no real gain.
Also, for your's sake (given you are posting on XDA, right?) you should avoid locked down cramped device.

64GB model?
Hey I saw 64GB model of Xperia X in GSMarena specifications
Is it true and will Xperia X Performance have that too? cause that would be so awesome.
And it's not listed in Sony Mobile page also and I saw in Chinese Website in Taobao they mentioned about 64GB model, which is really awesome if they bring to the table cause I feel like it's a must since Android OS is taking like 9-10GB of internal storage.

Both X and X Performance have 64GB version, but only dual sim model.
You can see it from white paper.

I'm on hot waters for deciding a new phone. If this doesn't come to US and being able to be used on Verizon, that's where I'm making the jump for the Galaxy S7 Edge. I have everything dedicated towards my current phone, but being outdated is no fun. :/

Giga,
Unfortunately, this phone WILL NOT work (at least not fully) on any CDMA networks/carriers........... Verizon, Sprint, & U.S. Cellular are all CDMA. The only major carriers that it WILL work on are the GSM ones............ T-Mobile or AT&T.
If you'd like more proof of this, then check here as I did. I have T-Mobile so for me it'll be fine. The only thing that's NOT fine is Sony taking F'ING FOREVER to release this d*mn phone! lol
You could always switch to T-Mobile too if you want. It just depends on your service area and how happy you are with Verizon. I had them before but I felt they charged too much, so I switched to T-Mobile and am VERY happy with them! You get more for less with them I feel. But like my sister lives in an area where T-Mobile is still not yet that strong (though this is changing rapidly IMO), and so she recently switched to Verizon and is very happy. But typically wherever I go I have a strong signal, especially since they recently cleared a Band 12 (700 MHz bandwidth spectrum) issue in my area. Now even indoors in like downtown (Chicago) area where before I had a low or no signal, it's now full strength! Plus if you switch they'll cover your early termination fees (if any) with Verizon.
I had the Z3 and it was the BEST phone ever! I recently got the S7 Edge and it's really nice but was too big IMO. Plus my fingers would accidentally sometimes hit stuff on the edge sides and activate/affect stuff on the screen like apps or video that I didn't intend to be touched. Maybe just takes some getting used to? So I switched to the regular S7 and yeah it's a great phone overall but due to me being unhappy with the physical home button, the sound quality and sound-related issues on this phone (crappy speaker, issues with connecting to portable amp/DACs) and lousy screen brightness (sucks under heavy sunlight), I am basically COUNTING THE DAYS until the X Performance is released! Sony phones are like the only ones left that I can stand at this point. lol
I wanted to give Samsung another chance after S5 (which I kept for like 4 days and returned cuz I couldn't stand it either lol), plus with all the promos they had like free Netflix etc I said F it. I love the promos, but now I feel stuck with the phone. I just hope Sony releases the X Performance by June as they said they would. I don't know why it's taking so long as everyone else has or will have released their phones by May (HTC 10). The only news we have is that the Xperia XA & X are to be released in the UK in early June (XA) and on May 20th (X). Lucky for them, though they are NOT getting the X Performance but we in the U.S. are.

I was checking Sony Mobile's US site tonight to see if there was an update on release dates and noticed that they had removed the fingerprint sensor from the specs list. I don't think it's ever had water resistance listed since I've been checking on updates. These features are both listed on Sony's Italian site. Why doesn't Sony want to succeed in the US? Who's going to pay probably $700+ for one of these? I guess I have to decide between the Z3 or a Z5 if I'm going to get a Sony phone. I was going to wait on the X Performance since it should be a little more durable, even though I don't think it looks as nice.
Hey Buggy,
Yeah you're right! And this is not even a WEEK after they'd added the fingerprint sensor TO the U.S. X Performance! Man, I love Sony's Xperia phones, but their marketing & sales people are f'ing stupid!! lol
The water resistance (IP65/68) is only available on the global/international model, which I am sure is the same as the Italian model. The U.S. model does NOT have this listed anywhere, so it won't have it either. This section from the int'l version's full specs page proves that even more so: "Durability
IP65/IP68 **; **: This service is not available in all variants or markets." So I am sure the U.S. variant won't have it (stupid Sony).
It sure DOES feel like they don't want to succeed, doesn't it? The ONLY good thing that the U.S. variant has that the other variants apparently do not is the inclusion of the QNovo Quick Charge 3.0 charger IN the box! So now, for the first time ever, Sony is giving us U.S. citizens something no other country is getting (wow! lol). If you go to the U.S. site you'll see it listed towards the bottom. But I'd still rather have water-resistance and a functioning fingerprint sensor.
I had the Z3 and it was the BEST phone I've ever had! I have the S7 now and yeah it's a great phone "overall" but once the X Performance comes out, I'm totally selling my S7 and getting the X Perf. F Samsung. lol No other phone out there does it for me. Only one that I'd even get is the HTC 10, but that would only be if I couldn't get the X Perf for some reason.
I actually really like the look of the Xperia X Performance. At first I didn't think I'd like it w/o the glass back, but actually, the graphite black and silver/white models have a brushed aluminum/hairline finish, which I LOVE. I'm super excited to get this phone! I even actually FOUND an online seller (who just happens to be located 10 min away from me......Chicago suburbs) who has the X Performance in all 4 colors available for pre-order right now. The company is called Expansys, and they have international locations all over the world. The U.S. Expansys site has the int'l (and yes better lol) version of the X Performance, so I pre-ordered it last week! If interested, go here to pre-order your own today! They have an A+ rating on the Better Business Bureau website, and I know of one person who's already ordered from them several times w/o any issues. Current release date for X Perf is 1st week of July. Hopefully that doesn't change (stupid Sony lol).
Well I think I've decided to just go with the Z3 or Z5(or the compact) for now and save a few hundred dollars. Sad that our choice for the new phone is a gimped version with a warranty or the no warranty international version with all the features(minus the quick charger). Does insurance like Square Trade cover phones without warranties?
I've enjoyed my HTC One M7 and wouldn't be looking for a new phone if I hadn't cracked it's screen. It still works just fine though, but it's given me an excuse to finally try a new brand and I've always thought Sony's were nice looking. I have a Tablet S that has worked well for me, even though Sony quickly abandoned it. The HTC 10 is also one of the only other phones I'd consider. Just hate that they ditched the distinctive front speakers. It now looks like a generic phone in front. I've never liked the looks of Samsung's UI or their phones...just too rounded. LG's V10 is nice, but too big.
Buggy,
You may (or may not) want to still get the XP after hearing what I have to say here. But either way (Z3, Z5, or XP), they are all great phones. The XP may not have the glass back of the Z-series, but for the most part it IS an improvement over both those phones. The XP has a better processor, the Snapdragon 820, which is more power-efficient than the Z5's 810 (40% more actually), and the slightly smaller screen adds to that 40% too. It has the same main camera sensor, but "improved algorithms" in the software to make for even better pictures, in addition to that "Predictive Hybrid Autofocus" feature which Sony has focused a great deal on. This official comparison review video of the Z5 vs. the X (X & XP have the SAME screen & camera) highlights some of the other improvements. But as the video points out, the main specs might be the same, but the software is apparently different. And the front camera apparently has better specs too. Watch it all if you like, but definitely watch 3:35-4:25 with regards to the screen brightness & color accuracy comparisons, and a little after that are the camera comparisons. To me, the XP is worth waiting for. But that's me. I have the S7 and the screen brightness on it sux a$$ under heavy sunlight, so I believe the XP will be better after watching that video. I'll be SHOCKED if the XP's brightness isn't higher than the S7's. I'll be comparing them both regarding that on the day I get the XP. lol Then there's this camera comparison b/t the XP, HTC 10, and Galaxy S7. For the first time EVER, Sony's smartphone camera BEATS Samsung's in quality and color accuracy while in auto mode! I don't believe this was the case even with the Z5. And this isn't even the final release version of the camera software either!
I have some good news regarding insurance on the unlocked XP. Not sure on Square Trade, but I have T-Mobile as my carrier, and they use Assurance for the phone insurance. I confirmed with TWO T-Mobile reps and ONE Assurance rep that as long as I register the XP on my T-Mobile account and keep paying the $8/mo insurance charge that Assurance WILL insure my unlocked XP phone, even though of course I'm NOT buying it from T-Mobile. This was VERY good news to hear! lol So now buying the (cheaper) int'l version makes even more sense.
Sounds like we think alike. I had the M8 and it was my SECOND favorite phone of all time, with the Z3 being #1 of course. lol That sux about your M7 screen, but yeah that was 3 years ago, so now maybe it IS time for an upgrade, especially if you have a cracked screen. I couldn't agree more on HTC's idiotic decision to remove the 10's bottom speaker and move it to the bottom side, and how it degraded the looks. They could've easily put that fingerprint sensor in front (which is NOT a physical button you can press by the way, which is a + IMO) on the back somewhere or the side like Sony does. I think they were trying emulate Samsung and Apple, which yes makes the phone look more generic. I hope the HTC 11 will see a return of the front-facing stereo speakers for HTC. That's one of the reasons I love Sony so much. They have not abandoned that speaker set up on their flagship phones, and they are still making a flagship-worthy phone that is NOT a phablet. I hate phablets (tried the S7 Edge.......too big IMO), so I'm glad Sony hasn't gone that route. If the XP wasn't coming out, I'd strongly consider the HTC 10 actually.
I too strongly considered the LG V10, mainly because LG put a premium amp/DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) chipset in the V10. It has the same chipset used in my $300 Oppo HA-2 portable amp/DAC. With a phone like that I wouldn't need the HA-2 in b/t my phone and headphones anymore, but again like you, I felt it was simply too big, so I passed, despite its great specs. And yes..... Samsung. lol Not a fan either of their UI or phones, though both have improved much in the last couple of years (I def like that they ditched the plastic-bodied phones finally, which I'm sure Sony and Apple had an influence on lol). The UI is still laggy IMO (downloads faster than my parents' Xperia Z1s ((2014)), but when jumping from app to app on the Z1s, I notice it loads up QUICKER than the S7, for real), the menu is less confusing than the S5's was but still not as simple as HTC's and Sony's, the stupid & awful-sounding lone bottom-facing speaker, the constant skipping when listening to music on it via the MicroUSB port (super annoying), and that physical home button: I hate them. lol I tried to give Samsung another chance, but although the phone is great in many respects & I got some sweet promos from buying it (i.e. 1 year of free Netflix HD streaming, etc), I have no desire at this point to keep it any longer than I have to.
I love Sony's Xperia phones the most, so whichever one you get will be great for sure.

RockStar2005,
Thanks for your input and the tip on T-Mobile's insurance policy. I know I want a Sony phone, but I'm still so indecisive when there's quite a chunk of money involved. If the XP is over $700 are the improvements really worth $200-$300 more than a Z5 or Z3? Plus, how long is it really going to be before it's released here? Sony seems to be pushing back the release dates in Europe. Guess it will just give me more time to save up. lol

Buggy,
Not a problem. Thought you might find that information useful.
Yeah I understand. And you've got a cracked front screen to deal with as well. The price of the XP HERE in the U.S. will very likely be less than the price it goes for in other countries. We (the U.S.) don't charge VAT (Value-Added Tax) on imported products like other countries do, so that helps keeps the prices down. You may still pay a LOCAL tax, but not a VAT too. Just something to keep in mind.
I can't really tell you if it's "worth it" because you know my answer, but you may not feel the same way. Again, if I had a cracked screen I may not be so patient either. You could just buy the Z3 or Z5 then upgrade again when the XP is here, or at some point in the near future?
How long? That's a great question Buggy. lol Though Sony IMO makes the BEST phones, their marketing and sales departments are dumb as F. lol I mean, NO real ads for the Xperia smartphones here in the U.S.? No billboard or TV ads? Nope, but they do put those video ads up on YouTube! Of course, the reason why that's so dumb of them to do is that the only ppl who will see them are those who were gonna prob buy an Xperia phone anyway! lol You think if someone doesn't know about their phones they're gonna magically think to go to YouTube to watch their ad? And the ads aren't even that great typically, with one exception (see pics and especially the vid). They need more ads like this one that are personable, and also I think some ads with some big actors like George Clooney, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, etc.
In countries like Sweden, Sony is just as big, if not bigger, than Samsung......and big surprise, they actually ADVERTISE there. lol But anyway, yes, the X got pushed back about 2 weeks, but I believe it will still come out in June. Now when it actually comes out HERE is another story. lol I wish I could tell you the XP will get released on time, but I don't know. Sony Mobile DID re-promote them all in the U.S. just yesterday (see link below, and videos too), but still, no dates were announced. I realize as time goes on that trying to make sense of their odd way of doing business is basically a waste of time. I'm just gonna wait for the phone, buy it, and hope they get their act together one day. lol
JUST saw this new article as I was typing this e-mail. Hopefully it means they are on schedule? Of course, I'm not buying the U.S. version anyway, but I figure the sooner either the U.S. or int'l version gets released, the sooner the U.S. will get both.

Well, as my phone is still working, I have time to wait. I'm just impatient and I want a shiny new phone now! (even is it ends up being a year or two older than the latest thing)
You'd think with also being a music and movie company they'd have some celebrities who'd do commercials for them...or at least do more product placement in videos and movies Music videos would be good because they probably get watched by a lot more people than most movies, and repeatedly. I guess they did with the last James Bond movie but it's not nearly enough. It would be nice if they made more of an effort here in the US to market their phones. They need to quit gimping the US versions though, and maybe that's why they don't do much to promote them. They'd have more people going "BUT WHYYY?!?!?!?! THAT'S SO STUPID!!," like me.
Buggy,
Yeah your phone is working which is good, but I hear you on being impatient and wanting to replace it. I'm hoping the new US videos mean they're fully intending on releasing the XP on time (1st week of July!). It makes me nervous though that the X is supposed to come out on June 10th, yet the U.S. Sony Mobile site STILL does not have it listed for pre-order, neither does the international site. The UK Amazon site has it for pre-order though, but the U.S. Amazon site doesn't even have it listed period. I'm hoping that maybe Sony will just release them all at one time here in the U.S., but who the F knows? lol God do I wish I could just put my foot up Sony Mobile's idiot CEO's ass just once! lol
Yes, I would AND DO think that! They had the Sony-Erickson phone (whatever its name was) in Casino Royale, which came out 10 years ago! lol Not sure on Quantum of Solace, but SkyFall (2012) featured the original Xperia Z in it. Then came SPECTRE last year........ that's when they stopped featuring Xperia phones because Daniel Craig and director Sam Mendes didn't think it was "Bond-worthy". So instead I think they featured some watch instead. They did however do a Bond-related ad which actually DID get some U.S. TV time (shocking, I know lol) but only ran for maybe a month? lol It featured Moneypenny and was actually an ad for both the Z5 and their new camera at the time. Whatever........that movie wasn't anything special anyway. lol It was nice though to actually see an Xperia ad on TV though vs. online.
I've been saying in these various forums for months now.........you're SONY........get some big actors like George Clooney, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, etc to do ads for you. DON'T make them generic or boring. Get a U.S. ad agency to do them perhaps. I mean, the last 2 actors I just mentioned have ALREADY DONE movies for Sony, so they already have an established relationship with them. I even wrote to Sony Mobile and told them to do this too. I mean, they should get like Sony Movies and Sony Music etc to invest some money into Sony Mobile too..................if SM features ads with these actors or musicians, it's a win-win for both parties. And yes, removing key features from the U.S. versions is inexcusable BS and needs to stop too. So frustrating. If I didn't love their phones to death (or hate the competing phones out there so much lol), I'd go elsewhere. I just hope the XP comes out on time. I mean, it's gotten so bad to where I'm literally checking out stuff daily. I even have a "Google Alerts" setup on the XP.........I get an e-mail every night right after midnight giving me updates on anything new that's related to it. lol Can't wait for this crap to be over with.
Buggy,
Major update:

http://www.theverge.com/circui...availability
Pre-orders for XP begin June 19th, XP gets officially released on July 17th! Now, I think this is for the U.S. XP, which of course is somewhat lacking (no IP65/68, and I guess now they took the fingerprint sensor back off it), though it WILL come with the QNovo Quick Charge 3.0 charger. I though will be getting the int'l one, which I'm hoping will come out SOONER than the U.S. version? I know it will most likely be cheaper too, since the int'l Z5 is cheaper than the U.S. version is. But the fact that the U.S. one has a date at least means we have a better idea of when things will start to happen.
For now, I will keep my pre-order in place with Expansys, which is for the int'l one. They are located all over the world, but the U.S. one is like 10 minutes away from me (Chicago suburbs). But if U.S. Amazon gets the int'l one too by early July, then I'd rather just order from them.

For now, I will keep my pre-order in place with Expansys, which is for the int'l one. They are located all over the world, but the U.S. one is like 10 minutes away from me (Chicago suburbs). But if U.S. Amazon gets the int'l one too by early July, then I'd rather just order from them.

Mind you there still is no information band support, nor is there info on finger print sensor or waterproofing.
