[Q] Rooted Nook touch... what next? - Nook Touch General

Greetings guys.... i have the 1962934272 bytes eMMC Nook touch. I first backed it up; the back size was 1962934272 with and without the bs=1M parameters and is identical. Tried the TouchNooter 1.6.24 ... didn't work ... stuck at the 'Nook by Barnes and noble' screen.... reverted back from the backup. Tried again per "nookdevs.com/NookTouch_Rooting". Put the rooted uRamdisk in. Installed adb on ubuntu and installed on the rooted nook su, superuser.apk, nook color tools, gapps using adb with some help googling around. Rebooted ... this is when the system got updated to 1.0.1.
Well... now when i reboot i am still at the regular B&N screen. What am i missing? I think i need the 'Go Launcher'. To have the same apps as the TouchNooter, i was thinking of installing busybox and buttonSavior from market afterwards. I need to find how to install go launcher .... search didn't yield good results... can somebody give me a link please...
Will the following files from TouchNooter along with the go launcher make it work and at par with TouchNooter?
/system/build.prop, packages.xml, framework.jar.
thank you,
Prasad

I also have a 1962934272 bytes eMMC Nook touch and there is no problem.
TouchNooter works flawlessly (I just had to install it twice because the first time it got stuck).
By the way, if you want to install GoLauncher, you just have to download the apk here
for instance (or take the apk provided with TouchNooter) and then install it using adb install <name_of_the_apk>.apk

Agree... will try again.
I was thinking along the lines... I will try again. Thanks for replying mdall... wasn't sure if it a retry will work or not... your reply instills confidence in me to retry. Thanks again.

Worked.
Had to reboot after it stuck at the 'Nook by Barnes and noble' screen the first time... worked fine the second time.
thank you.

You're welcome

Wait, there are 2 kinds of nook? how do i know if my nook is 1962934272 bytes eMMC Nook touch or the other kind? what's the difference?

the other/prior one had 1958739968 bytes eMMC.
when you do a
dd if=/dev/sdb of=./nookTouchOriginal.img bs=1M
you will get a 1958739968 bytes file in slightly older N2E nook touch
but mine purchased on 20 Aug was 1962934272 bytes.

[Q] Rooted Nook Touch, Problems

Hi all,
I rooted my lady's Nook Touch last night and today she reports a few problems I'd like to iron out.
1st, the physical side buttons for page flipping are dead in the nook books.
2nd, the on-screen keyboard for Android doesn't seem to work correctly. It appears, and I can type, but when I hit enter or "Search" (in Market, Browser, etc.) nothing happens - so I can't use the keyboard at all.
Sorry if these have been posted before, I did a quick search and came up empty-handed...
Hi
Could you be a little more specific?
What software version do you run on your NST?
What root method did you use?
Sorry, forgive my lack of details...

TouchNooter 1.6.24 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132693
Should I try updating to 1.1?
Broken search is a known issue with no known fix afaik.
The dead buttons are news to me, is this with the stock reader?
You should probably do factory restore + reset, update to 1.1 and just wait for a new version of TouchNooter to become available as all your efforts on 1.0.1 will be lost when updating to 1.1 anyway
And as always, do a proper backup before rooting..
Thanks for the info. I did do a backup before I rooted. Here is my file:
$ ls -l | grep -i backup
-rw-r--r-- 1 root 7000 1962934272 Nov 8 22:27 nook_touch_backup.img
Can you point me towards a good guide for restoring?
Or can I just...
Code:
dd if=nook_touch_backup.img of=/dev/<nook> bs=1m

Yep, just boot with the noogie image and dd it back.

[Q] Multitouch and the NTG

I attempted to use the multitouch kernel with clockwork mod after rooting my glowlight and for some reason it seems to have hosed the glowlight controls completely. I was hoping that the n2t recovery by ros87 would help but the server hosting the image is not working. Does anyone have a mirror of the image?
EDIT: In my panic I didn't check the entire thread and found a dropbox mirror of the file further on in the thread. Let this serve as a warning to first stay calm and also not to attempt multitouch on the NTG. Sorry if I wasted your time.

Here you go.
Just wait for a NTG modded kernel, dont use the device specific resources for the NST.
Thanks for the quick response and the advice which I will be sure to remember. Any idea how long it's going to take to port multitouch to the NTG

It'll take about the amount of time for whoever brought multitouch to the Nook Simple Touch to download the source for NTG and then make the appropriate changes. That's if they even care.
Hi,
the kernel in the attachment should work for the NTG. I patched it a month ago and totally forgot to upload it .
Works also on the normal NST.
The zip file includes only the kernel, its not flashable by cwm, you have to push it manually to your boot partition and add the permissions in the xml-file.
Git-Repository: https://github.com/mali1/NST-kernel_115
Thank you. Is it possible to replace the uimage in the original CWM zip with this one and do the same thing as for the nst or should I follow the directions in the original thread which if I understand right involves burning noogie to an sdcard then then booting the nook up, connecting it to a computer, finding uimage and replacing it.

Yes, that should work.
Hello everybody!
I haму some questions about this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24180134
Can I use this method if I had already NST [email protected] with root? I want get multitouch, NoRefresh and usb-host.
All what I should to do is just replace uImage through Noogie?
This particular thread is regarding Multitouch on the Nook Touch Glow, not the Nook Simple Touch.

I've installed this kernel on my NTG and it works great. Thanks!
>>you have to push it manually to your boot partition and add the permissions in the xml-file
Using Root Explorer, where do I have to copy the (extracted kernel) file to (exact path/folder)?
Add permissions: Can I do that in Root Explorer rather than opening the xml file (filename?)? I do not have an editor for xml files....(which one would you recommend if I cannot change the permissions directly using Root Explorer)?
Thanks!

Glowlight not working
Hello,
I have a problem with my Nook Simple Touch Glowlight that I hoped you could help me with.
I rooted it and it was working fine. Then, I tried to add the multitouch mod, but I think it was for the NST, and now the glowlight doesn't work at all. I did not have a backup, unfortunately. I tried doing a factory reset and rerooting, but when it gets to the "try the glowlight" part of the setup. I can't go any further because the light doesn't work. How do I fix this problem?
Thanks,
Joe
Glow + multitouch + Norefresh?
After rooting my Glow I downloaded and installed the .zip I found in another thread to enable multi touch and an APK that was to enable NoRefresh. The norefresh didnt work at all and the multi touch worked but killed the glowlight. Now I understand what happened, but basically i ended up with the kernal for the NST that enabled Multitouch.
After downloading and ADB pushing the the kernal that has both Glow and MultiTouch I am satisfied but not completely happy. I would really want the addition of norefresh but I have not been able to find a kernal that has all three.
USB host would not be a bad thing to have also, as long as it doesn't hose the battery life. It isn't a required component for my needs.
I've been looking around to see who has been working on this.
As mentioned elsewhere, EpdController has been changed in 1.2 which will break anything designed to play with Epd modes.
I've no experience or real interest in "NoRefresh" since for what I want
it's better to integrate Epd control at the application level, which I do.
Oh, I should have mentioned. I am at 1.1.5. I used Glownooter because I wanted the Market access, utilizing the Search Market tool. As far as I could tell, the rooting methods that work on 1.2 don't include Market capability.
If I could update to 1.2 and keep market that would be cool. It might be that any dev work has been scrapped for 1.1.5 as that is an old version.
here is multitouch for nook glowlight, it is in zip format for installing with CWM, I made it changing the uimage file for the rigth one in the NST CWM zip file from the first post
I have tried it in my nook glow with firmware 1.2, spanish language, and previously rooted with glownooter, I had installed too the norefresh toggle previously, it works like a charm with opera browser, and of course light is working
I installed it after previously have done with the no glow version and having lost my light, so it works also as an amendment to this failure

failed rooting, glowlight not working. HELP!

Guys, I had quite bad experience rooting my glowlight nook with touchnooter . Basically messed smth up so it couldn't start (just kept flashing). didn't save my back up. had to do unrooting with the software 1.1 that I guess was from nook without glowlight. Unrooting went fine, but the glowlight function is not working anymore. does anyone know how to solve this or could give me a link to download the proper software? thanks!

you should read the instructions better next time...
but making errors is human and you have a cool nick
I'll hopefully receive my glow in two weeks and I'll upload my backup then
You should make an effort to salvage your personalized data in /rom.
There is all the info in the p2 partition (/rom).
There is also a backup copy in the p3 partition (/factory) as rombackup.zip
You might do this with noogie or CWR and ADB.

Nook Glow Backup Image
I have a backup image of a NSTG that I am uploading right now ... and looks like it just finished. Here it is:
dl[dot]dropbox[dot]com/u/98836278/nook-glow-backup.img
When you have the image downloaded follow these instructions:
blog[dot]the-ebook-reader[dot]com/2012/05/02/how-to-backup-and-restore-nook-glow-and-nook-simple-touch/
As a new user I am not allowed to post outside links.
Downloading, thank you so much!!!
I'll post again with the results...
YES, YES, YES, YES !!!!!!
leadbella thank you a million times!!
I downloaded the image, and wrote it ot my nook.
By the end of the operation, which took some 9 minutes or so, the process ended abruptly:
error 27 writing to disk at sector 3825664
I opted to ignore it and reboot the nook, just to see what happened. The nook booted alright.
I then booted in CWR and replaced /rom with the contents of my own nook /rom which I had salvaged.
I then booted again, and performed all the process flawlessly.
So far I have registered the device again (no error here since /rom contains my sensitive data. Don't know if it would work if the data was from the original image, since MAC address, device SN and some other parameters would not match), loaded a couple of books and started reading again.
Just in time for another one week shift (leaving tomorrow)
Leadbella you saved my..... nook =)
Thank you, I owe you one.
No problem at all. Looks like it worked for srgarfi ... dukenookem please let me know when you have finished downloading the image. I need to use my dropbox for other things at some point, but I can keep it in there until you finish downloading the image. If the image link above no longer works and anyone needs a copy of this image feel free to send me a message and I will try to post it back up.
The image is from a just out of the box NSTG with no information and nothing added to it.

Thanks Leadbella. Downloaded the backup. Tried to follow the instructions, but the size of you file is almost 2 gb, too large for my microSD. Didn't expect the backup file to be that large. gonna go look for a larger sd card.

You should have saved your /rom files before ovewritting your nook with leadbella's image.
And I'm afraid there not anything you can do to recover your unique /rom files for your nook now.
Oh, I was concerned that Leadbella had posted an unedited backup...
so, what is going on?
first: if a post about partitions isn't comprehensible to you yet -- you probably shouldn't root your device until you do enough reading that you understand it a bit.
Putting leadbella's file onto an SD card probably won't work as a way to restore; when I recover from an image, I use a usb cable and write from my computer to my device.
Leadbella seems to have taken a complete backup image from the device - this will include the important /boot and /system partitions (which is good) but will also include the /rom partition, which unfortunately is unique to every device.
So, if you restore from that image and don't have access to your own /rom partition or recovery image, you're going to wind up attempting to register a second copy of Leadbella's Nook to your account. Fortunately for Leadbella, that won't work.
Now, what can you do to repair and get a corrected nook which can be registered?
I'm going to try an experiment - I'm going to start by backing my device up in its current state.
(I do this by making a Noogie disk
Booting from Noogie
Connecting to my computer
using the command dd if=/dev/sdX of=/dev/currentnookglow.img bs=1M
where X is the number of the device that pops up when I connect my NSTG to the USB port.)
That requires linux; if you don't have linux, you can install VMWare Player (Free) and then install linux in that.)
What I'm going to try doing:
- back my system up
- image with Bella's file
- delete the file /rom/devconf/MACAddress from the imaged device
- reboot the device
- see if I can now see the real, physical MAC address, either on the device (unlikely) or on my router (likelier)
If I can see the MAC address, recreate the file with the correct values for Mac and also create a correct file for serial number /rom/devconf/SerialNumber
Boot, and see if the device is registerable to my account.
BUT: right now, BN has blown out the Nook Touch register/deregister/register process. So I can't do the test until they fix that.
And if it does work, anyone trying it will need
- the noogie disk
- linux
For windows users, maybe, but I have not tried:
- a clockwork boot disk
- functioning ADB able to connect to your clockwork-booted device
(Some clockwork boots support ADB; some do not.)
as roustabout explains, you can write Leadbella's image to your nook (if in windows use win32diskimager or diskimage) and then take a look at the contents of /rom.
The fix the contents of macaddress and serialnumber, but only if you plan to use the nook with B&N services fix the rest of the necessary files.
If you just plan to use your nook as a standalone reader (yes, why not?) once registered you can just ignore the contents of /rom (at least until the next software update).

I'd really appreciate reup as well, since my backup is not working and I need to restore my NSTG.
before restoring from someone else's img, remember to salvage your own /rom partition since these files are unique to each device and you'll need them to register your nook prior to starting reading.
That said I can upload that IMG, but what's the best choice to do so? Any of the many filesharing services? Dropbox ? Google Drive?
require those images
Hi srgarfi, is it possible for you to please upload those images... i need them...
Please reupload the backup. I could really use it too.
the image I used, originally shared by LeadBella (thanks again!) is here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/xikkjs627s9mw2r/nook-glow-backup.img
Remember to save your /rom files before applying the backup or you won't be able to register your nook on B&N to start reading.

I'm using 1.2 firmware and rooted the same way as you did.
I've burned CWM to an sd card http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360994

But fastmode didn't worked so far, just multitouch, seems like 1.2 broke it.

touchnooter do not work on 1.2.1

Hello, I am sorry that I write here but no 10 posts to write in development section.
I see threats in the forum bought nook from asda. Yesterday tried to install touchnooter-2-1-31.zip. I prepared the sd card. Put in the nook and restart. It started and I waited the screen to become black, remove the card and restart.... Then it freeze on "Your NOOK is starting up..." I waited about 20 min, but nothing happend. Then I installed firm 1.2.1 UK from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41296148&postcount=2 and then again try to install touchnooter-2-1-31.zip and the result was the same froze. Then made a factory reset via NookManager and again try touchnooter 2 1 31. After that I tried older version of touchnooter-2-1-26 but absolutely the same.
All i need is to run some app that support PDF.I have scanned textbooks scanned as puctures. I want to read them in landscape and I need to zoom in may be with 2 fingers (multitouch)
PS I restore default settings and root it with Nook Manager. Then install Alkido and it support lanscape reading, but no zoom. I tried to install different kernels with no success.
Sorry for may English. I hope you understand me
Thank you

Ok, how did you use NookManager? Did you just "burn" the .img file onto the SD card and reboot the NOOK? I've done that and it doesn't recognize the NookManager SD card and just freezes on Your NOOK is starting up...
Use this program http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2084266&stc=1&d=1372709166 choose the *.img file and click write. Use CARD READER not NOOK!

Ok, yes that is how I put the .img file onto the SD card (through the card reader). Now I put the card in, and shut down the nook and restart it, and it will boot into the Nook Manager?
Thanks again
