Wow, I just bought the transformer 3 days ago, and now I see that the TF2 is just around the corner.

Yup. Even then, I'd wait a month or two. See reviews, bugs, and if it's worth upgrading too.

Lol well it's your fault for just buying it now.
The saying should be "All good things come to those who look." It's not like ASUS only announced it yesterday. There is virtually infinite information on the internet, it sure as hell isn't ASUS's fault you didn't take the time to look through it.
If you keep thinking like that you'll never get anything.
The "hi-tech racing" will never end (sorry for my poor Eng, hope you'll understand what I mean).

6 monthly?
iPhone4 was released in July 2010 and won't be replaced until October 2011 - 15 months
iPad2 was released in March 2011 and won't be replaced until March 2012 - 12 months
In fact, I can't think of a single IOS device that was replaced less that 12 months after launch.

If you take that approach you will never have anything. If you waited for the TF2, you would have been disappointed that ASUS announced a TF3 just fter you bought your 2. We want manufacturers to provide us the cutting edge technology yesterday and then get disappointed if they provide the next revision tomorrow.
next time when a product just released you go buy it in the first day. don't wait for reviews or asking here n there. if you do that, you will always several months away for new version
TF 2 "just around the corner". I don't think so. If you check at the firmware changelog the first firmware for the TF was from April. So I don't think TF 2 will be available before Christmas. I bought one of the first available units in my country 2 months ago. Usually most of the things are available here 2 months after they hit USA market. So guess how much I have to wait . I will skip TF 2 and go with TF 3 (which will have 8 core CPU ).
I hope we can use the same keyboard dock from TF1 to TF2.

This, everything is just speculation at this point. Nobody actually knows anything about the tablet or its dates, just that it might be the first tablet to get the quad core processor that Nvidia hasn't even officially released themselves.

Hi,
Congrats on the purchase, enjoy it, it is worth it!
rio
PS: and as far as TF2 coming out, forget about it and focus on the one it your hands
I hope we will at least have proper drivers and HW acceleration on our xformers till number 2 is out. I'm a bit dissapointed about video playback, lagginess, web performance etc on our devices.Software development is way behind hardware IMO.
Go read the news (Digitimes, Fudzill, etc.) Expected release isn't until Q1 2012 at the earliest and I predict it wont be out until Q2. Hell, Sony and some others haven't even released their Tegra two tablets yet, so I highly doubt the TF2 will be here anytime soon.

You know that when it first comes out, it will have problems that will take months to be resolved.
By the time a device works the way you expect it to, the next new unreliable version comes out.
With the latest OTA, my TF finally works the way I expected it to when I bought it last May.
funny my tf has been working like i expected it to since may, guess it comes down to having proper expectations for a tablet, yes theres sites that suck to use, some flash that loads bad or slowly, even some browser crashes, but if we're gonna wait for all that to be fixed then lets all go return our computers also
in regards to the op, thats the problem with buying things so long after they come out, as an early adopter i'm happy i'll be able to replace this "old"(lol) tf early next year!
Just ordered one as well and i don't think there will be a tf 2 this year,at least not in Germany that is. I went originally with a hannspree hannspad but that sucked as i planned to wait for kal El tabs but well...

Hope they still have someone working on ours
That'll be nice.
The ultimate tablet would be very fast, snappy, multitask like a champ and play any video you throw at it.
This market moves so fast most shipping devices get left behind.
Wonder what a used Transformer will sell for when the new ones ship?
If it is anything like the Transformer then count me in.
same, I'll hand this one to the misses.
Does the current transformer really lag a lot after putting it through a lot of multitasking? If so, maybe I'll wait for the quadcore one.. I just don't feel like waiting till Oct. lol.

Asus has said the Transformer will be a line of tablets, and the keyboard dock should be compatible with future tablets.
Winning strategy in my book.
But I just got mine DAMIT!!!!! Not even a week old
I guess I'll be shelling out more money at the end of year. If you look at their road map for the Tegra chip there is one slated from every year until 2014.

Mind that the Tegra II is a 2010 product... but it's really taking until this year to get good products that have it under the hood.
I'd expect late LATE 2011 before the Tegra III is in tablets, if not early 2012.
And think about it, your Transformer is a great tablet. It will still be working great at the start of 2012!

Yeah I know. I had the Viewsonic G-Tab back in Dec. The first Tegra 2 tablet but I returned them (wife and mine) to staples b/c the screen was super crap and it ran froyo with all the mobile phone components still under the hood.
As long as we have developers to continue giving us the latest software from Google or Asus continues supporting it, I'm cool with the current model for the next year or so.
Thunderbolt Rooted!
Realistically, i think we will be seeing a Tegra 3 tablet this holiday season or somewhere after CES in 2012
If you look at Nvidias release schedule, they plan on releasing a new tegra processor every year, i wont be getting a new tablet every year thats for sure
I am not really that interesting in the quad core factor of the Tegra 3, mostly the increased GPU cores and the inclusion of the NEON instruction set for ARM which really increases performance, it was stupid of them to not include it in Tegra 2
I love how the chart shows "Tegra 2 - 2010" while the modell is not even avaible at half 2011
Tegra 3 - 2012 would be more realistic

The Viewsonic G Tablet and Malata tablets were out in November of 2010 with a Tegra 2.
^ That.
Plus the Transformer was the first Asus tablet (in the modern sense of the word), they needed time for R&D, etc; I think the fact it's on a Tegra II is a result of nothing better being available earlier this year.
I'm sure once the T3s comes out, they will be much faster to market.
(Don't get me wrong, the Tegra 2 is excellent.)
If Asus releases a Tegra 3 tablet this summer, it will probably be more then $400
My guess around $600
Because it would be stupid to release a new low cost tablet when they just released one in the spring....

Like others have mentioned, if we see a shipping Tegra 3 tablet before Xmas I'd be floored. Granted the Transformer got most of the R&D out of the way and the tablet intricacies should be mostly ironed out now, I just can't see Asus releasing an updated version within 3 months of their initial tablet release.

Are you F*ing kidding me, Samsung? I give up.. I'll wait until the Tegra 3 gear come out and buy a tablet from another vendor who doesn't play these games..
Well now I understand why JR.com and Office Max are saying they aren't getting until late June.
It's a paper launch. Bummer. I guess they don't have much supply or something.
Philly Carpool
Anyone in the Philadelphia area want to carpool?
This is disappointing, but we'll only have to wait a bit over a week more, I guess I can live with that.
I'm looking to buy my 1st tablet. Still no word on the 8.9 I wonder is this going to be Samsungs version of the White iPhone. Announce it and it comes out a year later.
I'm starting to fall into the camp like a few posters here and may just wait till later this year and get one with the Tegra3 or see what Apple has in store for iOS5 *shrug* heck maybe even Win8
I was wanting to try Android as I already have an iPhone4 and wanted to try something new.
I'm guessing it's a supply thing because I don't understand the NYC only launch. I didn't think they would do a super soft launch with this device.
This would be my first tablet too. I didn't think I would need one, but once I got a chance to use one for a couple of day I really want one.
I've played with the iPad2 and the Xoom and I much prefer the Android experience. However all these devices are still pretty new. I generally wait for a second gen before I buy.
I'd almost rather buy an iPad2 now, better resale value later, and wait till an Android tablet with more experience under its belt.
Also I'd much rather have a Nexus tablet.
I don't have to have one but could find uses for it at work. We have some printers setup in the building and with a tablet I could connect to the network via wifi, and look at jobs on the printer without going to a terminal.
Exchange emails,5250 client, ssh, ereader for tech stuff, RDP and VPN plus just social stuff I'd want to do so I at least I can justify one and I thought I'd go with the 8.9 but I don't know now.
I'm one of those that my attention will jump to something else pretty quick but as a fall back the iPad2 can do everything I'd want to do and then some.
Well, I will be right there.
I will try to look at the tablet and if the specs are as seen on the I/O units (no USB, no SD, no HDMI) then I will wait for the massess to fight to get a new 10.1 Tab, and then make my way to the TF / Iconia stand to get one.
And what is all that about Touchwiz? Is the release unit going to come with Touchwiz?
Regards.
That is sad and also explains why there are no preorders from Best Buy, Target, Walmart, etc. I'm starting to wish at least one manufacturer would wait until they have significant enough stock to launch before actually attempting to launch.
And I guess Motorola was the only one that got that right with the Xoom launch but then shanked the price.
Try the asus transformer. Amazing tablet!

By launching only the 3G version with a non-working micro SD slot and waiting months to launch the Wifi version? I don't think pricing is the only thing they shanked.

Incorrect. Someone who is on a budget would be foolish to purchase a tegra 2 tablet today as once tegra 3 is released VERY soon they will lose half the value of the tablet before they even have begun to finish learning how to use it.

Every one of your posts are negative. If tegra 3 takes as long as tegra 2 took to come out, we are looking at a possible release of maybe late next year. I doubt NVIDIA would be dumb enough to release it now when their tegra 2 chips are selling like mad.
Tegra 3 may be coming but since not one device has been announced or even leaked I'll bet it's at least another three month till we see a new tegra 3 tablet. I wouldn't hold my breath, it's maybe even more realistic that the device makers wait for the Christmas sale.

Most Mfrs have STOPPED production of tegra 2 units, xoom production for example has ended over a month ago.

I just wish we had solid proof/confirmation that the Kal-El Tabs will be available to consumers as early as that, there's just so much speculation.
I'm very close to ordering a 32 Gig Tab 10.1 after waiting ... and waiting .... for it to be released over here. I'm now fed up with waiting but I'd be very pissed if I were to shell out almost £500 only to find that the Quad core version was to be launched a few weeks later.

Again you are simply wrong. You're not going to have to wait long because tegra 3 tablets are being released in September. They are being Mfred right now and its a MASSIVE upgrade from tegra 2 which is over a year old now.
You cant win this debate with "You sit there and wait for the next best thing....you will be waiting a long time!!" because it is simply not true in this case.
I dont understand how others dont understand this....
As far as I know the only quad-core mobile device that will be available to consumers this fall/winter is the PS Vita. If quad-core tablets are arriving this fall you'd think we would have seen announcements, leaks or previews by now yeah?
Either way, I purchased my tab fully aware that quad-core devices would be likely be arriving within 6 to 8 months. I don't regret the purchase as I've been happy with the performance of the tab and I make use of it every day. As of right now I expect to keep the device until software is released that the tab isn't powerful enough to run.

At this point Mfrs are keeping a VERY hush hush attitude about the new Tegra 3 unit they are producing right now. Why? Because they dont want tegra 2 sales to suffer. They know tegra 2 is OLD despite what consumers think and releasing information about such a massive upgrade to Tegra 3 would only hinder old tegra 2 unit sales.
I can tell you for sure Tegra 3 units from ALL mfrs are being kept HIGHLY secretive until launch date. The only way we will get any info about them is when they hit the FCC. After they hit the FCC they are usually out on the floor for sale the following week.
You have to understand that my knowledge flows far beyond computers, and tablets all the way to economics which is why its easy for me to understand what is going on.

At first, I was a little mad at this, my Transformer just arrived in the mail today and the first website I went to on my new TF was engadget.com and I saw this headline.
Then, I realized that I probably won't even need a quad core tablet for another couple of years considering that there are only a handful of apps that take advantage of Tegra 2.
Yeah I went into the tablet game knowing full well it would be outdated very quickly. I judged my opinion on my purchase solely based on the streamline performance I saw from the models already available at the time, the xoom, and decided it was going to be enough power for me for a while. But deep down inside it does get to you when you see something newer come out a quarter later!
I also heard today that the price of the Asus Transformer is going to drop on the middle of this month, but they didn't give a price. A reaction to Acer Iconia dropping to $398.
I think that the new screens on the next generation of tablets will be really expensive since they will be 2048x1500 or there abouts.

There is this assumption that there really isnt any point of quad cores as Apps arent optimised for them yet.
However, honeycomb itself was designed with multicore processors in mind. Single threaded apps can take advantage of multicore processors by running the app on one core, and other OS services on the other cores.
Even the most basic of tasks can benefit like browsing and gaming. The OS itself can benefit from quad core.

Then, I realized that I probably won't even need a quad core tablet for another couple of years considering that there are only a handful of apps that take advantage of Tegra 2.

They are just playing the same game as Apple, updating their product on a yearly refresh cycle.
I won't be updating from Transformer to Transformer 2. I'm very happy with my purchase, and nothing will change that. A few years down the road I may repurchase.
I only hope that Asus don't withhold Android ICS from Transformer to give the Transformer 2 a market advantage (it already has one in it's hardware spec).
I have spent the last 2 weeks trying to decide what android tablet to purchase. I have narrowed my decision between the TF and the GT10.1. I was gonna make my purchase in a week or so, but now, I dont know?! Maybe I should buy one at BB and get the buy back program for it. Damn....

I'd rather have a 3.2 update with no bugs, TBH.
I don't buy this october release date. it makes no sense to put out a new device so early when TF1 sales are rising not falling away. surely asus would want to max out sales of their existing product before launching a successor.

After October is December and Christmas;P, so this is a very good time for a new flagship product.
oh and one more thing, If Asus doesn't do this, then another company will. Kal-el is ready, so it is, a matter of time.

I'll believe it when I see it. I just read a story yesterday (I'll see if I can find the link) saying that the chip will not ship in quantity until 2012.

I can tell You that Kal-el is ready but creating a tablet with this processor is another and long story.
Oh and i cant tell Y why i know about Kal-el
Greets
I could easily see them selling both the TF and the TF 2 at the same time, just at a lower pricepoint for the TF and a higher price point for the TF 2. It might be that by the time the TF 2 comes out, component costs will have dropped on the TF and they could price it at, say, $349/$449 retail, and then the TF 2 at $449/$549.
That's just idle speculation, of course, but it makes sense to me, particularly if the specs on the TF 2 are crazy good, which I expect them to be.
IMHO Quad core on a tablet is completely and utterly USELESS. More is not always better.

Why? Wouldn't you prefer it if your browser typing had less lag, and the app your were running was not effected by other tasks such as feed updates, etc. More cores impacts both the base OS and apps.
Your Android device WILL BE outdated in 3 months, maximum 6 months no matter what you buy.
I am happy as long as I get the Ice Cream Sandwich running smoothly later this year.

This is the same thing ppl said when the tegra2 was announced. The fact is that honeycomb itself is not mature yet.
I agree with the post above saying quad core is useless. It is useless for the time being cause, while the hw techs is advancing at great speed, the software is still lagging behind. why have a quad core when clearly we do not have many tablet applications? i am not talking about the recent api changes in 3.2 so that apps can be stretched... i am talking about special apps made for tablet only. why improve the hw when there is still way to improve in the sw?
browser typing is clearly a bug in the codes. we do not need to get 4 cores to get rid of it. browser typing lag is something we shouldnt be experiencing even in a single core. quad cores coming out in october is quite outrageous especially for us ( living in europe) . i for one, paid approx 450 euros 2 weeks ago for the TF only (without the dock).

Nice! I wonder if its time to start looking for a buyer for my TF..
I am a bit disappointed that Google didn't bring an ICS tablet beside the new Nexus..
Dangit. My wife just told me I can get the TF2 if I'll sell my TF now, while it's likely to get the best price. Which I could do, but how long could I live without a tablet? A month? Would I survive?
I'm just not sure. Damn you, Asus!
They were only allowed to release the video after Ics was launched by Sammy last night.

we're all on the same boat. a month without the TF is torture but if it's means getting the TF2 (although it's more expensive) next month, i'll do it.

Traitor! get out of here
With my electronic fetish I am thinking but
Really it will have to blow me away in what it does compared to my current transformer and keyboard, and if my unit can be updated to ICS they will have to sell me on some real life advantages not benchmark, mine doesn't lag or anything my battery life is superb.
Ah, so it will be a new device, not just updated hardware. If they fix the speaker and make it lighter and thinner, I am so going to get it.
I can always dump my old transformer on my wife.
Seriously, if we can get an ICS update I would probably stick with my TF1 until the TF2 prices dropped in 6 months to a year. I figured out that if I shoot at 1080p24 on my T2i, my TF1 will play the 1080p video. The only other hardware restriction I had was movies. Dice Player handles those nicely and it's only $5 vs $500.
I don't know about you, but dropping $500 on a tablet every year is a little hard to stomach.

And on your relationship
TBH, if the current TF101 gets an ICS update I will be more than happy. If the apps and some games will run on it, then I'll definitely skip this "update" - I like the metal finishing, but just because of more proccessing power (when not really needed) I won't buy it.
you think the dock keyboard will light up?

Wow good luck with your desition
I'll wait until I would be sure that tf2 can be rooted. And considering the time it takes to get the latest B series rooted, my guess is 6 months to 1 year. Hope I'm wrong.
I like the brushed look on the outside case, very cool though I'm not sure if that's enough for me to ditch my Transformer 1.
Another caveat is the question of whether the Tegra 3 is the best upcoming chipset. Qualcomm and TI are doing some interesting things, and so is the Tegra 3 the one to buy or should one wait for the next gen from the other manufacturers? Who knows, maybe it's the TF3 that will be worth buying, and the TF1 can hold us off in the meantime.
Personally, I'm tempted to sell my TF1 and get a TF2, but my more practical side says to wait until CES to see what other manufacturers announce.

While I really love my Transformer, I couldn't agree more. The one thing that just pisses me off the most about my Transformer is the lack of media that I can actually watch on it. Knowing that the newer OMAP4 and Qualcomm chips are much better, and on top of that they are probably almost as good as the Tegra 3, I really feel it's worthwhile to wait. The only thing I feel the Tegra 3 has going for it is the GPU side of things. Right now, TI seems complacent to always include a simple GPU that is inferior to whatever Apple currently has. Why don't we have a GPU the same as Apple? I don't know, but it's disheartening from the gaming side of things. I want more. The only OMAP4 chip that comes close is the 4460...and that won't be out until next year....
