10.1 exclusive for NYC on June 8th and everywhere else June 17th - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

Sigh..
Maybe I'll get that iPad2 after all, and just wait till the Tegra3 ships later this year to get an android.
I bet this has to do with them not having enough units to sell.

Ugh. Not driving to NYC to get this...

Are you F*ing kidding me, Samsung? I give up.. I'll wait until the Tegra 3 gear come out and buy a tablet from another vendor who doesn't play these games..

Well now I understand why JR.com and Office Max are saying they aren't getting until late June.
It's a paper launch. Bummer. I guess they don't have much supply or something.

Philly Carpool
Anyone in the Philadelphia area want to carpool?

This is disappointing, but we'll only have to wait a bit over a week more, I guess I can live with that.

I'm looking to buy my 1st tablet. Still no word on the 8.9 I wonder is this going to be Samsungs version of the White iPhone. Announce it and it comes out a year later.
I'm starting to fall into the camp like a few posters here and may just wait till later this year and get one with the Tegra3 or see what Apple has in store for iOS5 *shrug* heck maybe even Win8
I was wanting to try Android as I already have an iPhone4 and wanted to try something new.
I'm guessing it's a supply thing because I don't understand the NYC only launch. I didn't think they would do a super soft launch with this device.

This would be my first tablet too. I didn't think I would need one, but once I got a chance to use one for a couple of day I really want one.
I've played with the iPad2 and the Xoom and I much prefer the Android experience. However all these devices are still pretty new. I generally wait for a second gen before I buy.
I'd almost rather buy an iPad2 now, better resale value later, and wait till an Android tablet with more experience under its belt.
Also I'd much rather have a Nexus tablet.

I don't have to have one but could find uses for it at work. We have some printers setup in the building and with a tablet I could connect to the network via wifi, and look at jobs on the printer without going to a terminal.
Exchange emails,5250 client, ssh, ereader for tech stuff, RDP and VPN plus just social stuff I'd want to do so I at least I can justify one and I thought I'd go with the 8.9 but I don't know now.
I'm one of those that my attention will jump to something else pretty quick but as a fall back the iPad2 can do everything I'd want to do and then some.

Well, I will be right there.
I will try to look at the tablet and if the specs are as seen on the I/O units (no USB, no SD, no HDMI) then I will wait for the massess to fight to get a new 10.1 Tab, and then make my way to the TF / Iconia stand to get one.
And what is all that about Touchwiz? Is the release unit going to come with Touchwiz?
Regards.

That is sad and also explains why there are no preorders from Best Buy, Target, Walmart, etc. I'm starting to wish at least one manufacturer would wait until they have significant enough stock to launch before actually attempting to launch.
And I guess Motorola was the only one that got that right with the Xoom launch but then shanked the price.

Try the asus transformer. Amazing tablet!

By launching only the 3G version with a non-working micro SD slot and waiting months to launch the Wifi version? I don't think pricing is the only thing they shanked.
(ps. And pricing wasn't really the issue, just a lack of a 16GB model.)

Well I guess a good thing out of this is, it will force me to read the reviews for a week to see if its good or bad.
If it was coming out the 8th were I live I would have just bought it first day.

More time to check out the new Toshiba Thrive Tablet coming in July, not to mention more hands on from users that get the 10.1 first

I think the fear is that if they are delaying and staggering out the launch, that might mean they have supply issues. So even when the 17th comes around, getting one might still be impossible for many.

[Q] Your Thoughts Please

I would like to know what you guys think about the xoom and how it stacks up against the tablets that are coming in the next month or so. The reason I'm asking is because I'm a broke college girl and gonna have to sell my net-book and psp and what ever tech toys I don't use anymore to even be able to buy one, but I do want a tablet. I have an EVO now and love it so a tablet would be perfect. Should I buy a xoom or wait and see? Or is the xoom the best we will see for awhile.
Sd card,USB,bluetooth and a nice screen are all things I would like.
Thanks in advance.

Very hard to compare the Xoom to vaporware. The Xoom has the advantage of being a Google device so we should see more frequent updates. But that does not mean it is better than what may come out.
In my opinion the xoom has all the things your looking for except support for sdcards at this point in time. As stated that's coming in a future update. I think with the fact that this is a Google experience device and obviously Google has had some influence on Motorola since the bootloader on this is unlockable without jumping through hoops so I think well see updates quite frequently.
Giving the market a little time to ramp up, I don't think the Xoom will be the top dog for very long (think about how long a given phone is the best for, lol). There are lots of announced tablets that don't even have release dates, so the Xoom is obviously a better choice than something we have no specific details about. This first round of tablets (Xoom, G-tab 10, G-slate) will all have similar specs and stock Honeycomb, but like I said the Xoom is out and the other 2 are not. Later on this year we will of course see more offerings from different manufacturers, its just hard to tell when. The Xoom is looking to be the Nexus One/Nexus S of tablets for Google. From most accounts this was the development platform hardware for Honeycomb in Google, so I think that gives you some indication of the fact that we may see updates more hastily than what Motorola is known for.
It really just depends, how bad do you want it? and how long can you wait and see? This is the empirical question with all technology, really.
Edit: I should also say that from what we saw at MWC, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 won't have SDcard support or standard USB (proprietary Samsung connector with USB on the other end, like Apple). Most every new tablet will have Bluetooth, however.

It certainly has a micro SD card slot, however, it will not be useable until a future software update that has not been officially announced or detailed rolls out. Bluetooth and micro USB are both present as well as a nice screen. The bluetooth works great as I am typing this on the XOOM bluetooth keyboard.
I would wait for a while unless you need to have it now. Lay back, see what the iPad 2 is, see what other tablets are offered and see what the support for the Xoom is like over the next month or so. By then the wifi model will be available for the Xoom at a 200 dollar savings, as you didn't specify that you needed 3g. By may there should be an avalanche of tablets, if you can last that long.
Thanks for the replies. I want one now but that's how it always is when something new comes out. But waiting wont be hard since I have to get the money to buy one.

Missed the deal what would you do?

So I like many missed the $100 dollars off deal to get a transformer. I'm a techy guy, but hate to early adoption and with the whispers of a transformer 2 (not the slider or the asus tab that eats your phone) would you say wait for second gen of the transformer? Or would you say the first gen will still get a lot of use even after the second gen comes out? My folks have an ipad first gen and have no interest in the ipad2 because it does what they want, need and expect nothing more.
If you say wait would your answer be different if asus come forward with their accessories?
That's just my question. Wait don't wait? Even when the T2 comes out, new roms and accessories will help the longevity of the T1?

I know how you feel. I feel the same way when I miss a deal or an item I am watching on Ebay. What I do is I try to shut the item out of my consciousness for a few days, and then I am able to get over it.
I would say just wait for the time being. If you happen to come across another deal, then you can jump on it.
in the meantime, wait it out, see what comes up for TF Rom dev, IF asus ever gets off their ass and releases the damn USB adaptor, TF2 leaks, New tablets, etc.
Personally, the TF is going to my wife as soon as i find the next "best thing"
Hopefully the Rom development will grow. Its the one thing about the TF which im surprised hasnt take off

It depends... If you can live without tab, then you can wait for coming soon tablets if not grab this one. TW is what rocks on this tab. Also, I'm sure you have 14 days to get familiar with the tab before returning it, until you are buying from Costco, that gives you 90 days (pretty much you can exchange it with whatever latest comes in that period)

I have an Asus TF, which I think is a fantastic multi-purpose device. However, I also bought a GT 10.1 at the end of last week, and to be brutally honest, it is a far better pure tablet than the TF. That's not to knock the TF, because it still has a lot of advantages over the GT 10.1, but I think Samsung have done a very good job producing top notch hardware and coupling it with intelligently modified software.
In my opinion (and that's all this is), Android 3.1 with Touchwiz is provides a better experience than Android 3.2 on the TF. I never felt that my TF was the sort of device I could give my parents (I even got my mum an iPad), but the GT 10.1 is definitely something I could recommend to a non-techy.
Regards,
Dave
I would have to agree ive had the tf from day 1 yesterday the speakers blew so its rma for return. However on my break i popped out and got a tab and have to say i love it. It just seems more mature and touchwiz actually compliments the tab when the tf gets back it will be on fleabay

Why don't you try going Cold Turkey for a week or two (go Tabless) and see if you miss it, if you don't miss it then just bide your time and wait for Tegra 3. Otherwise, get yourself the GT.
I returned my Transformer and then rejected the replacement as it was no better, that's not to say that there aren't good one's out there though.
I looked at all the available Tabs and in the end decided to wait for the Samsung, sure it lacks the ports that others have, but I'm now very happy with my decision. I've had a few annoyances along the way, but hey if I didn't like fiddling with devices then perhaps I'd have gone the non Android route.
Just keep in mind that the "quality" Tegra 3 devices are still MONTHS away from shipping...and the day they ship, you'll be thinking about Tegra 4, or Super Exynos or Snapdragon Ultra or OMAPWTFBBQ...
TLDR; waiting for tech is a sad game to play, if you don't have current tech to play with while waiting. Though it is cheaper, I think it's a false economy.
I hear the next GTab 10.1 will be coming in january... You should totally wait. Hell, 04 Jan 13 is just around the corner
I love my Tab, it's the best Android Tab out right now, so why not go for it. You can always sell it later and get something back for it.

6 monthly?
iPhone4 was released in July 2010 and won't be replaced until October 2011 - 15 months
iPad2 was released in March 2011 and won't be replaced until March 2012 - 12 months
In fact, I can't think of a single IOS device that was replaced less that 12 months after launch.

If you take that approach you will never have anything. If you waited for the TF2, you would have been disappointed that ASUS announced a TF3 just fter you bought your 2. We want manufacturers to provide us the cutting edge technology yesterday and then get disappointed if they provide the next revision tomorrow.
next time when a product just released you go buy it in the first day. don't wait for reviews or asking here n there. if you do that, you will always several months away for new version
TF 2 "just around the corner". I don't think so. If you check at the firmware changelog the first firmware for the TF was from April. So I don't think TF 2 will be available before Christmas. I bought one of the first available units in my country 2 months ago. Usually most of the things are available here 2 months after they hit USA market. So guess how much I have to wait . I will skip TF 2 and go with TF 3 (which will have 8 core CPU ).
I hope we can use the same keyboard dock from TF1 to TF2.

This, everything is just speculation at this point. Nobody actually knows anything about the tablet or its dates, just that it might be the first tablet to get the quad core processor that Nvidia hasn't even officially released themselves.

PS: and as far as TF2 coming out, forget about it and focus on the one it your hands
I hope we will at least have proper drivers and HW acceleration on our xformers till number 2 is out. I'm a bit dissapointed about video playback, lagginess, web performance etc on our devices.Software development is way behind hardware IMO.
Go read the news (Digitimes, Fudzill, etc.) Expected release isn't until Q1 2012 at the earliest and I predict it wont be out until Q2. Hell, Sony and some others haven't even released their Tegra two tablets yet, so I highly doubt the TF2 will be here anytime soon.

You know that when it first comes out, it will have problems that will take months to be resolved.
By the time a device works the way you expect it to, the next new unreliable version comes out.
With the latest OTA, my TF finally works the way I expected it to when I bought it last May.
funny my tf has been working like i expected it to since may, guess it comes down to having proper expectations for a tablet, yes theres sites that suck to use, some flash that loads bad or slowly, even some browser crashes, but if we're gonna wait for all that to be fixed then lets all go return our computers also
in regards to the op, thats the problem with buying things so long after they come out, as an early adopter i'm happy i'll be able to replace this "old"(lol) tf early next year!
Just ordered one as well and i don't think there will be a tf 2 this year,at least not in Germany that is. I went originally with a hannspree hannspad but that sucked as i planned to wait for kal El tabs but well...

Go with 10.1 tab or Asus prime?

Really like Samsung.. Have the Galaxy s2 skyrocket.. love it. and was thinking of getting the 10.1 tab , but heard the Asus prime is "the tab"..
Have heard issues with qc with asus and with the quad core being the first just alittle skiddish about it..
Im sure Best Buy will put the Galaxy stuff on sale soon..
I have heard great things of the Galaxy tabs..
What do you want? If you really want a quad-core, wait for new tablets first. If you don't need/want quad-core, get the GTab.
Just get the prime, seriously.
Here's what I would do:
1) post questions in the Q+A forum
2) read the forum and find the other thread ON THE SAME PAGE that asked the EXACT SAME QUESTION: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1383993
3) make up my own damn mind.
There are like three other threads discussing this same question.
If you have to have a tablet now, then yes, the Prime is the one to buy (assuming you want Wi-Fi only). But, like you said, Asus is a low to mid-level manufacturer and they had problems with the first Transformer and that was a much less complex device. If you read what's going on over at the Prime forum there's potential issues with Wi-Fi strength/range and some question as to just how many units will actually be made available this year. A ton of pre-orders were canceled and Amazon no longer has it listed for sale.
CES is January 11. There have been leaks about both Acer and Lenovo quad-core tablets. Both are supposed to have more RAM (2GB) and higher res displays (1900x1200) then the Prime. I wouldn't be surprised to see them announced in almost production-ready form at CES. Other than being the first Teg3 and having a dock, there's really nothing remarkable about the Prime. It's larger than the G-Tab, iPad2, and new Toshiba Excite. It has the same 1280x800 screen resolution and 1GB of RAM as all the first gen tablets. It also has mono-speakers (they're on one side) and only supports the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band. I think all the people racing to buy a Prime that already have an existing tablet are going to be disappointed when better featured next-gen tablets start to be released.
If you can wait until February-ish I think either the Lenovo or Acer are probably going to be better choices if for no other reason than having higher-res displays. They'll also ship with ICS pre-installed. But for now, solely because of the Teg3 processor (and keyboard dock if you care), the Prime's the best available choice. You're other choice could be to watch for refurb deals on the G-Tab. They've been as low as $329 shipped for the holidays. You could use it for a few months to see what your options are and then sell it on eBay/CL for close to what you paid for it.
Get the gtab. There is nothing revolutionary about the prime. If you got a little patience, you'll wait two three months and get some of the real next generation tablets.
The galaxy tablet handles everything except 1080p, if you do have a huge collection of that, get something else.
You get one awesome screen, very nice stereo speakers and solid build quality.

If you're still in the remorse period for your Skyrocket you have another option. AT&T's got a deal going where you buy a G-Tab 8.9 and get a Skyrocket free. So if you paid either $149 or $249 for the Skyrocket you'd end up spending either $330 or $230 for the Tab. It's also got a Qualcomm chip which is faster/better then the Teg2 in the Wi-Fi version. You don't have to keep the data plan on the Tab either. If you want to sell it down the road it should also hold its value better than a Wi-Fi Tab.
I would say Asus based on the specs but based on their past history I'd avoid them and go with the Samsung Tab....

I would avoid Asus too who needs updates, micro sd slot, hdmi port etc,etc,........ Look at Samsung they never roll out updates....They barely got 3.2 and 4.0 is just around the corner.
I cant tell if you guys are being sarcastic, but serious advice, i got my tab about 6 weeks ago and Im having tablet envy because the prime has more storage for the same money and its faster. I've had to do a lot of customization to mine for it to feel fast.
And if you plan on listening to music or watch any kind of movies on your tab then you will want to have 32gb minimum with MORE storage if you like to watch in 720p.
Having a usb flash sticking out the bottom of my tab doesnt feel right and im always paranoid im going to snap it

I have a SGS2 and it's been updated like a dozen times. I don't know why they're so slow with tablets. They regionalize their products and offer 3G versions which Asus doesn't so that could explain some of the delay. As Google's platform partner for ICS, the Tab should get ICS faster and better then other brands. Samsung UK announced the SGS2 will get ICS next month. Let's hope the Tab's right behind it. It makes sense for Samsung to get ICS on the Tab quickly to extend its selling life in the face of competition that's supposed to be announced next month at ICS. The Toshiba Excite, a direct competitor to the G-Tab, will ship with ICS when it launches in February so hopefully Samsung will respond before then.

I would avoid Asus too who needs updates, micro sd slot, hdmi port etc,etc,........ Look at Samsung they never roll out updates....They barely got 3.2 and 4.0 is just around the corner.

I agree with the updates comment but Samsung has gotten a little better in that area...
I don't need usb or hdmi slots... Some do, some don't but I'm in the don't department..
Not a good sign when a manufacturer with a questionable quality history has to delay its product before its even released because of quality issues....

And not even agree internally on whether or not the problem exists. Asus Canada notified resellers that shipments were delayed indefinitely while a fix for poor Wi-Fi range was implemented. Asus U.S. said the launch is occuring as announced on 12/19. The Prime forum should be entertaining once people have them in their hands.
You can't accuse Asus of a delay when, in fact, they are expected to meet their US ship dates (and we'll find out in two days, won't we?). Out of *all* of the reviewers and websites who reviewed pre-pro and production models of the Transformer Prime, precisely ONE reported any sort of Wi-fi issue at all (anandtech). Hard to believe that, if there was a widespread issue, only one reviewer ever encountered it.

Then you should run out and be one of the first to get one. Asus had a poor track record for h/w on the TF1 and the Prime's a more complicated device. It may be the second coming of Christ but like many here I'll wait to see what Acer, Lenovo, and Samsung announce at CES on January 11. The Prime's the first quad-core, it won't be the only quad-core and with a G-Tab I love I'm in no rush and don't feel like being part of Asus' QC process.
Actually, yes, I ordered one weeks ago from Best Buy, so hopefully I will be the first one to get one. Having played with a Samsung, I'm certainly not interested in anything they'll be crowing about in January.
