cracked screen - Vibrant General

hey guys, had a case and screen protector on my phone and it still seemed to crack. i have a nice crack on the top left corner. the touch screen still works and everything is fine. how can i go about fixiing this besides having to pay my $150 insurance deductable to get a new one. thanks in advance.

you may want to check to see if there are any stores in your area that focus on electronics repairs. My friend shattered her screen and went to this little privately owned shop, they replaced the screen for her (she had a back up broken vibrant) for only $30. I'm guessing it may be more if they have to order the screen themselves, not sure. But it may be something you could look into

Cracked Screen

Dropped my phone last night. The FIRST time I have dropped it too... Anyways, two cracks running through the screen have limited my touch screen capabilities significantly... I have alltel and no insurance. What are the chances of getting a new one?!?! Also, if i find the parts how easy would it be to replace???
The USB port on my out of warranty Mogul broke and I had no insurance. I was sweating the cost and that I had an unofficial ROM on the phone. The rep at the Sprint repair ctr didn't even turn on the Mogul when I explained the problem. It was swapped out with a new unit (not refurb) for $35. I got the feeling that the failed port is so common that they don't even bother to check it. If my screen was cracked, she wouldn't have known (and for all I know, it might have been $35 for a broken screen anyway). Now this was Sprint not Alltel, so ymmv. I would take it in, play dumb and see what they will do for you. Swapping out a screen on this phone will be far from easy!
replace
buy just the screen + digitizer off ebay its like 50 bucks. i have already replaced mine twice. i suggest you buy a precision screw driver that matches the phones screws so you dont strip them. like 6 buxks at home depot
example: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-LCD-TOUCH-S...VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247
not sure if this comes with the digitizer but yours may still be fine

Smashed LCD

Hey,
I don't suppose anyone would know how much T-Mo will charge to fix an LCD screen on a G1 in the UK? The digitizer is still fine because I can open apps etc.
Thanks,
Tom
Assuming you are still under warranty without water damage, call T-Mobile and tell them that your screen is loose or something, they will offer to replace it after questioning you about the phone, including the condition of the LCD. Say its all good. Once they receive your phone, you will be fined between $100-$150 dollars in warranty fees for the damaged screen, however you will get a replacement refurbished G1 in return. Alternatively, just be honest and go ahead and tell them you smashed your screen, they will fine you and get you a refurb ready to go. I would call to check first though.

$67 on eBay.

Great! Just noticed some dust under the glass! Ugh!

Just realized today that there is some dirt under the glass screen on the top left corner. When the screen is on, it is hard to notice. But since I plan on selling this phone to get my next one during the summer, I want this thing to be mint.
Do you know if Sprint will replace my entire phone or will they just replace the display in-store? I hope it's the latter...
BTW, any chance of getting a White EVO replacement?
If you have insurance on your phone the repair will be free for sure and if you bring it to a device and repair store they will replace the screen and not the whole phone. Costs less for the screen thsn it does for the while phone. Make sure you ask first because if they don't have a replacement screen they would swap the phone.
I take it by swapping the phone, I'd be getting a refurb?!

not sure of they are still swapping returns with new ones or not
You would be getting a refurb almost for sure. Its been out long enough fit sprint to have a stockpile of refurbs laying around. Thats how it is at the s&r store where I live.
Can you request just a screen replacement because ver 4 hardware would be annoying.
Take it to your nearest corporate store and they will replace the screen. My third one is the charm...first two got dust under the glass. I think they are more willing to do it if you have TEP, however.
Just ask. The service store will tell you wyat their policy is. Screen replacements are cheaper than whole phones. Just ask. If they say that they have replace just tell them that won't work. Then go back in a couple weeks and check again. They will do a screen replacement if you ask and be patient.

Cracked Evo Screen, Thank god for Insurance!

so, i recently received a replacement Evo from the repair center, and not even a full week later, my screen shatters from a 2ft fall . I left my evo on my lap, and rushed out of my car and completely forgot i had placed my evo on my lap. Well hearing my phone smack the road was a quick reminder of it. Lucky Damaged screens are covered under free replacement from the sprint repair center. Sprint use to never replace damaged phone with out having to pay the deductible. is this new, or have i just been dealing with the wrong people? attacheted is a picture of my evo. by the way, although the screen is shattered, it is 100% fully functional .
I just went threw the EXACT same thing on Friday pretty much. The FIRST time my EVO ever fell (about 2~3 feet) it shattered the screen.
I stuck my EVO in my hoodie pocket in my garage and the rubber case had hung up on the materiel so it didn't get all the way in my pocket. I let go thinking it was all the way in my pocket (was in a rush to get somewhere) and it hit the concrete floor face down.
The outside screen was 100% ok but the inner screen, the one that actually lights up was shattered.
I took it to my local sprint store which was only 3 blocks away and asked about a replacement expecting to pay the $100.00 dollar deductible. I was informed there was NO deductible and that Sprint had changed the policy a couple months ago with regards to replacing the broken screens. I asked why the change, because so many have broken? The store manager said yep, pretty much. Easier to just replacement them then deal with pissed off customers and potential law suits over something that breaks SO easy.
Anyway they were out of Novatech screens so they sent me over to a Corporate store. Took about two hours to get it fixed. They replaced the WHOLE front and even gave me the old one back because I had a Zagg protector on it. They told me to go to Zagg.com and claim a warranty on it which I did, should be here within a week!
same here, i walked in thinking they weren't going to cover it. I myself use to cause a stink when they wouldn't cover cracked screens. makes things a lot easier when sprint actually works with you. now my replacement is on its way, should be there tomorrow. i really am considering buying the otter box.
But in the long run, seems as though MOST people end up paying more into insurance than they actually get out of it
I absolutely agree, you end up paying $100 just to get a used phone. I just checked ##786# my phone was initially activated 7/1510

You even had a screen protector and it still cracked?
I've got to watch mine more carefully. I bought the Sprint screen protector for mine. Even after countless drops no cracks yet. But i can see a couple cracks on screen protector but not on screen itself.
Yay for insurance, even-though many would pay more into insurance than they get, at least there is a sense of protection.
Yup, that is one of the sprint sold protectors, it helps with scratches... Thats about it. Yes, if you love your evo, be careful haha

A screen protector is not going to prevent your glass from shattering....lol

Same problem with my homeowners and car insurance.
One thing I realized about insurance....you only need it when you dont have it.

Cracked screen :(

I'm just a little bit miffed today. My phone got knocked off a table at a restaurant, landed on the corner, then came to rest on its back (camera down). I know have a nice spiderweb across the top of screen. Thankfully, only my glass is cracked. The touchscreen still works perfectly, even across the cracks.
Am I going to be able to get this repaired from Sprint? One of my friends got his EVO repaired for free a few months ago with the same type of damage. Do I have similar coverage, or am I going to have to shell out for a replacement?
I'm taking it in on Monday, should I RUU back to stock, or just flash my rooted stock ROM backup? (I'm on CM7 RC4)
That sucks dude.
I'm always afraid of that happening to mine too
I personally don't know if Sprint will do it for free or not (they'll know for sure when you go)
Also, I think it might be best to RUU back (making backups of all your setups, ROMs, data, etc and saving said backups to your PC) Just in case Sprint feels the need to rummage through your phone after they replace the screen (I'm guessing they might to test to see if the screen replacement is working correctly)
You could do your second listed option, up to you. I'm also afraid of Sprint finding out I voided the warranty. See, if you they find out you're rooted, then there goes your warrant and free screen replacement (as long as a screen replacement is part of the warranty)
I'm not sure if they'll replace it for free. I have this "insurance" deal with sprint (which I'm pretty sure is a ripoff, but my mom insisted I get it) that we had to pay for when I first bought the phone that cost $10. It only covers certain types of things, such as hardware errors and the like, but doesn't cover accidental physical damage. It would cost me $100 to get my phone or screen replaced if something like this happened. But maybe the employees at your sprint store are nice and might replace your screen for free.
screen on my moment imploded and took it to the sprint store and asked them to fix it and they looked at me like i was a crackhead that walked in off the street. then they told me to call ausurion and pay the 100 bucks to get it fixed . chances are thats what you will have to do
