Atrix left out of updated Skype w/ Video - Atrix 4G General

Skype just updated their Android app and stated that those phones not directly on the list but running 2.2 should still be able to manually enable skype via going into settings....unfortunately when I installed it there is no enable video call...
Link to article --> http://www.pcworld.com/article/2372..._on_more_android_smartphones.html#tk.rss_news
Wonder if this is because I'm now on gingerbread and its not enabled generically on 2.3.4 or the other line in the story is if video enablement is not visible in settings it means your phone does not meet minimum requirements (hard to believe as this is more advanced than many of the enabled phones)
Hoping some of our devs can find a hack to enable!!!

So they have, that sucks because I have contacts I would frequently like to call using video.

I want video calls support too ...

* This specifically does not include some tablets that use the Tegra 2 chipset (e.g. Android tablets and Motorola Atrix do not support video calling).

Outside of Fring which isn't nearly as well known and no PC platform, it would allow you to make video calls to all our iphone contacts plus PC/Mac users.
I've used the yahoo messenger videochat and its not bad, but not nearly as many people use/run yahoo messenger so its not as ubiquitous as skype..

Come on! ask for it !

Thanks for the link! I will post on that thread and ask them.

their library does not support the Tegra. Our processor doesn't support NEON architecture, which the Skype video libary uses. there's no way devs can get around it, because they've tried. The main Skype app hacker, droidrx, in the Software forum IS an Atrix owner, ironically. He's enabled video on Skype for dozens of devices but ours will NOT work until Skype makes the library compatible with the Tegra.
see:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153285

Anyone read this before and have access to this kit?
Tegra 2 enables new mobile media and gaming capabilities:
For the first time, consumers will be able to game with multiple players using different types of devices. For example, a Tegra 2-powered super phone or tablet can be used to play with players on a desktop PC.
NVIDIA demonstrated a prototype of Skype HD video calling on an Android tablet at its CES 2011 press conference. NVIDIA developed a reference implementation of HD video conferencing on Tegra 2-based tablets using SkypeKit. SkypeKit is a collection of software and APIs that allows virtually any Internet connected device to offer Skype voice and video calls.

Tango
There is a good option that I just started using which is TANGO. This app is compatible with the iOS devices, and have just announced support for Windows. Skype does not have the slightest intent to support the Tegra CPU.

Come on skype...The atrix community wants video too.

our phone is such the most powerful phone that we dont support skype. gotta love irony eh? ;D

I'm starting to regret getting the Atrix soley based on Tegra 2, it seems to be responsible for more problems than good it does.

:/ Darn. Well this sucks.

we just have to be patient.
i can't wait until the atrix gets skype w/ video.

Dude u dont regret about getting a phone just because you dont have enough support available for it yet. When the phone came out, people who bought it bought 'em not only because its a nice sexy piece of harware but its the most powerful phone of its time.
Lets deal with, things are getting better, bootloader unlocked, new custom roms available, all sorts of hacks are being made available... it will get there when we can make a video call through skype...
just wait not hate..
Cheers

I'm with you...I guess I never caught the Neon issue and not being able to run full HD which I thought was actually the opposite and big reason I bought this phone...related I was not expecting the compatibility issues with the Tegra2..

we can run full HD last time i checked. on the GB release notes 1080p playback was listed
pretty sad that bigOl' NVidia tegra 1 was fail, not tegra 2 is still missing features. they make some of the best chips, i mean.. come on. at least AMD didnt make it LOL, our phones would be 100C and melt. but still. im sure we will get support sometime, when nokia releases their new Meebo phone they are working on i think im going to go to that for a while and wait to tegra 2 gets fully optimized.

Gingerbread cannot run full profile HD whether it be 720 or 1080P due to lack of NEON code. Which most likely is the same reason why skype video does not work on Tegra 2...Plenty of posts about full profile HD not running on Tegra 2, not now probably not ever...

Skype Video for Tegra 2
IIRC, on CES 2011, nVidia wrote an app using SkypeKit and demoed video calling with the Tegra 2.
So although the official Skype app requires NEON instruction sets, I wonder if it is possible to write an app similar to nVidia's which we know works with Tegra 2.

Flash 10.1 will NOT work on Galaxy 3

Hello everyone. First off, be clear of one thing: FLASH will not work on our phones even when Froyo is out. Flash was an improvement in Froyo, but it is not going to be in all phones just because they have Froyo..
I see a lot of people complaining that the Froyo releases of the Galaxy 3 do not have Flash 10.1. I opened this topic to inform everyone who doesn't know that Flash is currently only supported on ARMv7 processors, namely the ARM Cortex A8 processors.
The Galaxy 3 has an ARMv6 processor, which is not currently supported by Flash. Adobe has mentioned that Flash might be supported on lower end processors in the near future, but right now it can only run on phones having an ARM Cortex A8 processor.
So right now, Flash is a no-go on our phone, even when the final Froyo update is released.
You can check the requirements for Flash on the following link:
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/systemreqs/#mobile
Also, check out this link which mentions that ARM might be supported on ARM11 (ARMv6) devices in the future:
http://androidandme.com/2010/08/news/flash-player-10-1-could-appear-on-some-arm11-devices/
For those who wonder why the HTC phones have Flash, just found out that the Flash Player on HTC has been developed by HTC themselves. It is not the actual Adobe Flash Player 10.1..
So we can only hope that until final FROYO relese Adobe will mode Flash to work on our hardware

Not likely. Adobe has said they might make it work on these processors, but it surely isn't at the top of their agenda right now.
But on the other side, if We ask at loud and if we do it in weaves, they will change their mind and support our hardware

Where did you get this information from?
This is crucial, especially to the people in countries, where this phone has been released for sale recently, such as India. The biggest selling point of this phone, has been the technical ability to upgrade from Eclair to Froyo, as such, the importance of Flash cannot be underestimated. Whilst there are many owners who are not too bothered about this, the vast majority have assumed that purchase of the Apollo, would mean, for their internet phone usage, a very much improved experience, mirroring , albeit on a small scale, a view familiar to the desktop computer.
I hope you may be wrong. Samsung should clarify this, before many others spend too much money.

Where do you want to use flash ?
a) WEB:
Because you can use SKYFIRE which converts at their servers flash to html5 and you can watch converted flash video at your mobile
b) SD card applications:
I had on my XPERIA X1 (which has slower CPU) flash player and many many flash games. It was working without any lags.
c) what if you install flash player 10 like 3th party application ?
d) do you want to launch complicated Flash www pages at your mobile ? With this stupid resolution ? I think that:
- it has no sense (I hate to read anythink on this display)
- sooner or later the pages will be converted to html5 and we will be able to have them.
So please for what reason do you need flash ?

Live score updates would be one feature I use on a regular basis. Many sites require Flash to be viewed properly, and Skyfire is somewhat limited in being able to do so.
The resolution of the phone is a factor, but with many video presentations and live transmissions in the 320/240 mode, the Apollo is more than capable of being able to used for displaying web video. LaolaTV, TVU networks, and Justin TV are examples of this.
An otherwise very capable phone, I would just like to squeeze a bit more of it's potential.
The main requirement of flash is a VFPU(vector floating point unit).it is a physical device that should be present in the chip for flash to work.the older arm processors(arm1136) does not support it(thats why adobe said they wont support older processors). Our processor(arm1176) supports it but it is optional.so it all depends on whether samsung implemnted vfpu in this chip. Considering what they did with 3d graphics my hopes are pretty low.
Flash isnt essential but it would have been nice to have it.i didnt know about these things before i bought the phone.but considering the fact that no device. Anywhere near this price range supports it,i am happy with the phone.

As Adobe releases Flash for free, it doesn't really matter to them if it's used in cheap or costly phones. The ARMv6 processor is not necessarily used only in cheap phones. Rendering Flash content is a processor intensive job, so it is not an easy job to port it to lower end processors.

HTC has been giving Flash support for their Eclair phones, but it doesn't work that great. If you check the Wildfire review on GSMArena, Flash has trouble playing videos on all sites, and only simple games run nicely.
Flash can run on ARMv6 processors, but it hasn't been developed properly for it yet. And no one except HTC gives support for Flash in their Eclair running phones, so it's not only Samsung's fault. Plus, even Samsung gave Flash on the high-end Galaxy S AFTER it was upgraded to Froyo.
Let's see, it's bound to come out for ARMv6 processors sometime, as budget Android phones are only gonna increase in popularity.

Give me some reasons why I should get a Xoom and trade my iPad 2

I want to hear from Xoom users some advantages on getting the Xoom. I currently have an iPad 2 and it's cool but there is no JB for it yet. I saw some articles on Google IO today and was amazed at the USB host support which would make it awesome for emulators.
What are some advantages you guys think would be? I currently own an Evo so I'm familiar with Android. I'm more interested in knowing the cool things you can do with it. I found someone in CL who is interested in trading his Xoom for my iPad 2. Thanks.
Reason #1, it gets you away from Kool-Aide drinking mac-bots who think everything has to be white.
Anyone else have a constructive response?

Those of us who show our loyalty to google will be rewarded with land and women once the takeover is complete.
Additionally, flash is neat, USB hosting, I'm fairly siked about google music. Greater customization. I'd wait to see how 3.1 runs but it looks very promising in the dev notes.
you are not bound to itunes, you can customize your UI, your notifications wont interrupt you, its positioned to be compatible with a ****load of other devices, hdmi ready, amazon and sony love android

One thing I hate about the iPad 2 is the camera. I took a picture of my daughter up close and it was so blurry I thought she was a UFO. I think it's rated at under 1MP.

Plenty of tablet apps and "tegra HD" apps available.
Also, pretty much every app I've tried that didn't specify Honeycomb support worked anyways. the "HD" games are spectacular (youtube "pinball HD honeycomb" ... it's 2.99 USD (2.84 CDN haha) and it rocks.

I actually purchased the Ipad 2 and received it about 2 weeks ago. It took me less than a week to call Apple and request and return package. I then went into Best buy and purchased a Xoom.
Here are the reasons why:
- FLASH: I watch videos online all the time, and most of them are sites that use flash
- Being able to just download a mp3, an image, or even videos right from the browser and save it wherever I want to
- Being able to open the downloaded file with the app I want
- Being able to connect my Xoom to my PC at work and transfer whatever file I want
- Being able to customize my homescreen to my liking
- Notifications
- Widgets (I just hated that fact that I always had to go to the settings to activate bluetooth or wi-fi for example
- Now with Honeycomb 3.1 announced, I'm really not regretting buying the Xoom

In short, it's not quite a slick as the iPad 2 and there are nowhere near enough tablet specific apps, but imo the browser is better, it's more customizable, google maps is far better as is the multi-tasking. But you should know that HD videos will require re-encoding due to the Tegra2 chip and it's limitations.
I think the biggest reason you have already mentioned in your post.
Jail-break.
iPad2 is a Jail. It needs to be broken.
I used to be an iPhone user (3GS and 4G).
I am sick of being told you should do things this way and if you don't , you are screwed.
Xoom and all other android device brings me "freedom" in what I OWN.
Specifically in terms of functions
0. Flash
1. You get much better camera (5mp back, 2mp front facing)
2. You have the rights to root it, install customized roms/themes
3. You can install third party apps freely.
4. You can flash kernels to overclock your CPU to 1.5Ghz while iPad 2 is stuck at 1G max
5. You have strong Dev community to create stuff. as long as there is a need. Apparently it requires certain level of computer proficiency but from what you mentioned, you definitely have it.
6. You have google rolling out more and more exciting updates and with an open source concept, the market share of Android will bypass iOS by much and developer community will definitely notice this part of the market and create apps (commercial apps) around it.
7. many apps you know what is going on because you can see source code.
8. To someone who may worry that iPad apps are more than Honeycomb apps, I think at the current rate of brining new apps to platform, it wont be a problem a few months later at all.
9. Oh, you can install and dual boot Ubuntu in it.

Skype android update to 2.1 still does not support video calls on Honeycomb tablets

Skype just updated it's android application to version 2.1 which now has support for 20 devices and support for video calls for devices running android 2.2+ :
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...ncluding-evo-3d4g-thunderbolt-sgs12-and-more/
I have an HTC Desire HD , did the update and in spite of only having one cam on the back, it is really supporting video calls as I made a test call and it shows the Desire HD's cam (in America HTC EVO) image ( I guess I have to put the device in front of a mirror if I want people to see me )
Anyway sadly enough it still does not support Honeycomb, thus our ASUS Transformer tablets, I perform the update on the ASUS Transformer, but still it doesn't show video conferencing options... Maybe this time some developer will hack it for us....
This is the only thing i envy ipads, they have facetime and we have nothing... well crappy gtalk and some other ones that nobody uses.

It took Skype over a year to come out with Ipad version, let's hope it doesn't take this long for HC...
I wouldn't get my hopes up. I read an article saying that they are now focusing their efforts on the Windows Phone platform. Makes sense since Microsoft bought them (/is buying them).
I wonder why Skype are so reticent to adding video calling to Honeycomb tablets. nVidia demoed Skype HD running on Tegra 2 back as early as January of this year. But I haven't heard anything since just the rather lame excuse of only having it supported on a limited number of Android devices and that more would be coming soon. When Google release Ice Cream Sandwich which is supposed to unify tablets and smartphones, I wonder what will happen then. Will Skype still be trying to switch video support on and off for different devices.

Forget mobile platforms, Skype can't even manage to code proper software on the desktop. Not only have they not made Skype compatible with most high-def webcams, they've actually gone out of their way to make it *incompatible* intentionally, with all but one specific brand's webcams.
Getting high-def video working on Skype for Windows is possible, but requires you to run an old version, avoid it getting automatically updated to a newer version, and then manually editing files to get it to accept the video feed at the right resolution.
Until they get their act together on other platforms, I really don't see things improving on Android at any significant rate.
The new skype app also has this annoying feature that everytime you get network connection it starts Skype by itself.
I used to be able to use "Kill Skype" to kill it, now I have to log out from Skype.

Looks like you forgot about the coming of google+. Did you?

No, because google+ sucks and must be avoided.
However, I thought skype said it works on the Xoom ? So its just them slacking. And its very dubious programming behavior to check your app against a list to see if it works. - just do it right.

I myself do not think that Google+ sucks, in fact I find it quite good. But I am an old and regular user of Skype I even have paid packages to make skypeout calls and I have many friends and family members in Skype all living abroad, so the audio and video calls are truly a blessing and justified thing for me, not a luxury or a "nice-to-have" option. Right now, whether we like it or not, Skype is a much more popular, thus massive , platform than google talk or google+ , so it would really make my day when Skype brings video capability to Android 3.0+.

xBounds

I was searching around for an alternative to Airplay without a wireless TV with my 10.1, and I stumbled upon this.
http://droidcon.nl/?p=3616
It's called xBounds. Anyone heard of this? I see that the video was posted the 25th and I'm surprised at the low views.
thats great
Exactly what i was looking for as Dlna is just crap for compatibility and so slow and clumsy to use. This xbounds looks awesome.

I saw the video about xBounds also.
Is really cool. I sent an e-mail to the team and they answered:
"
...
Sorry for the slow reply. xBounds is not available for end-users yet, as it is not an app that can easily be installed on the phone.
We are talking to numerous cell phone makers and are confident that xBounds will become available by Q3 this year.
We will let you know as soon the technology is available!
By the way, xBounds supports all the use cases you described and it makes gaming real phone on a large TV using you phone as a controller

"
The use cases what he is talking about is a description what I wrote about play HD games like Shadowgun and play high quality videos in .MKV format.
This device is very usefull if your handset don't have any tv-out hardware, and if you already have some you can start to think wireless.
People from Amsterdan can find to buy at droidcon (droidcon.nl).
It seems to work with any android with wifi, and also bluethoot and usb (seriously I don't know how).
The Xperia Play users are running in circles while shaking money to buy it xP.
PS: sry for the english

Splashtop THD just dropped in the Market -- Tegra 3 only. :(

Crossposting from Transformer Prime General, so that people aren't shocked when they can't download it for their TF101. ::sigh::
Blog post here, Market link here. $6.99.
Lucky Tegra 3 users.

That's fantastic. A remote desktop client requiring 5 cores.
Here I thought my 1-core 1GB "AD-based VPN+remote desktop client" VMware image was earthshatteringly inefficient, but I guess someone was able to one-up me on that.
I remember back in the days when we used to create thin clients out of obsolete 386 and 486's by making them boot linux and run rdesktop on boot. You could do that with 16MB of ram and a 16Mhz CPU.
Are Splashtop telling us that 2x1GHz CPU and 1GB of RAM is not enough to run remote desktop? Seriously?
This is hilarious.

You can still use the regular version of Splashtop for remote desktop.
It's just that THD is designed to be able to do things that require higher processing power.
I am actually happy to see this because it means I will have better experience when/if I get a tegra 3 tablet.
However, I am still skeptical of the praticality of it because it will require even greater Internet bandwidth and stability on the receiving device for more advanced content streaming. Starbucks wifi won't be adequate, no way. You will need at least 3G quality connection.

im perfectly fine with them making a higher end version of Splashtop, but is our version made for tegra 2? I ran it and it was not a good experience for me

I use Splashtop remote to access my desktop from Afghanistan, but since going to ICS it opens, and tries to connect to my desktop but once it does the app just closes. Still works on my HTC Thunderbolt, but no dice on my TF101.
Any suggestions?

u should try to delete all data in the app from settings, then uninstall, reboot and reinstall, hopefully that will solve the problem

More likely it use native components that they've hacked together and don't want to back port to Tegra 2, or maybe nVidia only gave way for Tegra 3. I'm not sure what tools they have for developers.

.... I hope really Nvidia diden't do that, some games are already tegra3 exclusive. With gamelofts tf101 freeze out (nobody knows why) its like we have a foreveralone unit among other android units (which already have less apps then ios)
sorry for my *****ing, but asus needs to put some demands on developers

What's bad about some games being tegra 3 exclusive? Technology moves on, man. Also, companies want to make money.
It's just like how older CPUs and GPUs can't handle some of the new computer games.

Beg to disagree... Tegra 2 is less than a year old, and should not be considered as antiquated. i use linux at home, with an aasus eeepc 701G, the netbook that started it all, and can continue using the latest linux versions. And with the tf101, i am stuck to what asus wants, and cannot use linux.
I bought the tf101 in september, but it already feels old... Why?

Our 701s(use mine as freenas) arent expected to hang with the atom processor that soon followed in newer netbooks can do either. Nothing out of the ordinary. It feels old because we have to constantly hear about the latest and greatest gadgets and toys all the damn time now lol. Apparently their marketing strategy is working on us. I just fire up shadowgun to remind myself that this old girl ain't so bad

Developers are free to do what they want. If they want to make a program that requires stronger processing unit than tegra 2, so be it. You are in no position to complain. No one is forcing you to use their program.

No you are correct on that, but that isnt the point, with PCs a good one built for gaming can last up to 4 years playing stuff really well (maybe longer now that most PC games are ported from consoles), Tegra 2 tablets havent even been out a year really and now they are on Tegra 3 trying to essentially skip over Tegra 2 devices, if a game can be designed for Tegra 3 it should be available in a Tegra 2 version with some dumbed down graphics, I dont see how this would be so hard, plus the number of people actually using Tegra 3 tablets is pretty small as Asus is really the only one that has one out there with the Prime.
Why would these developers limit their potential user/buyer base so much? I hate to say it (and I love my android phone and tablet) but Google and the Android market are so fragmented its crazy, no wonder top apps come out on IOS first and quite a lot stay exclusive, one OS to worry about and the same specs across the millions of users that own one, the Ipad has pretty much become the console of the tablet world and Android Tablets are the PCs
As far as Splashtop goes, I paid for the Splashtop HD version because it was so much nicer than the regular version, it works fantastic with my Transformer, so I'm not sure why anyone is upset that there is a version that takes advantage of what the Tegra 3 can do, there is already a great HD version for Tegra 2 out there, which is what I was talking about at the top of my post
