Skype android update to 2.1 still does not support video calls on Honeycomb tablets - Eee Pad Transformer General

Skype just updated it's android application to version 2.1 which now has support for 20 devices and support for video calls for devices running android 2.2+ :
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...ncluding-evo-3d4g-thunderbolt-sgs12-and-more/
I have an HTC Desire HD , did the update and in spite of only having one cam on the back, it is really supporting video calls as I made a test call and it shows the Desire HD's cam (in America HTC EVO) image ( I guess I have to put the device in front of a mirror if I want people to see me )
Anyway sadly enough it still does not support Honeycomb, thus our ASUS Transformer tablets, I perform the update on the ASUS Transformer, but still it doesn't show video conferencing options... Maybe this time some developer will hack it for us....

This is the only thing i envy ipads, they have facetime and we have nothing... well crappy gtalk and some other ones that nobody uses.
Update didnt change anything on my transformer or nexus one.. still no video call.

I'm sure we will get video support... but when :S

It took Skype over a year to come out with Ipad version, let's hope it doesn't take this long for HC...

I wouldn't get my hopes up. I read an article saying that they are now focusing their efforts on the Windows Phone platform. Makes sense since Microsoft bought them (/is buying them).

I wonder why Skype are so reticent to adding video calling to Honeycomb tablets. nVidia demoed Skype HD running on Tegra 2 back as early as January of this year. But I haven't heard anything since just the rather lame excuse of only having it supported on a limited number of Android devices and that more would be coming soon. When Google release Ice Cream Sandwich which is supposed to unify tablets and smartphones, I wonder what will happen then. Will Skype still be trying to switch video support on and off for different devices.

Forget mobile platforms, Skype can't even manage to code proper software on the desktop. Not only have they not made Skype compatible with most high-def webcams, they've actually gone out of their way to make it *incompatible* intentionally, with all but one specific brand's webcams.
Getting high-def video working on Skype for Windows is possible, but requires you to run an old version, avoid it getting automatically updated to a newer version, and then manually editing files to get it to accept the video feed at the right resolution.
Until they get their act together on other platforms, I really don't see things improving on Android at any significant rate.

The new skype app also has this annoying feature that everytime you get network connection it starts Skype by itself.
I used to be able to use "Kill Skype" to kill it, now I have to log out from Skype.

No, because google+ sucks and must be avoided.
However, I thought skype said it works on the Xoom ? So its just them slacking. And its very dubious programming behavior to check your app against a list to see if it works. - just do it right.

I myself do not think that Google+ sucks, in fact I find it quite good. But I am an old and regular user of Skype I even have paid packages to make skypeout calls and I have many friends and family members in Skype all living abroad, so the audio and video calls are truly a blessing and justified thing for me, not a luxury or a "nice-to-have" option. Right now, whether we like it or not, Skype is a much more popular, thus massive , platform than google talk or google+ , so it would really make my day when Skype brings video capability to Android 3.0+.

Video Calls in Android?

Hello All,
I hope nobody has discussed this topic. I did a search on XDA also, but no use. I would like get help from Android users on this topic.
I'm currently using Windows Mobile 6.5.x versions. I see WM is supporting Video call option over 3G. But never heard of such in Android.
Yes Android is newer than WM and yet growing (very rapidly http://www.gsmarena.com/2009_world_handset_sales_ranked_iphone_os_eats_winmo-news-1469.php ).
Is anybody aware of 3G Video call for Android phones and also a support of Secondary camera for it? If yes, please post the device name.
I had already done a complete search on phones, but if any body is using a 3rd party app for video call, yes then also please post the app name and phone on which the app is used. Also post the Android version you use!
I hope I can see a list of device names, so that I can try one Android phone.
AFAIK, the current Android kernels don't support front camera's.
Looks like the recent Android (not sure about version) is supporting secondary camera.
Samsung SHW-M120S specs say that Secondary VGA camera is available.
Reference
Hoping for a Video call app too...
Hiya Guys,
My wife has the T-Mobile Pulse which also has a camera on the front. unfortunatly she can only make photo's with it. no calls
Would be fun to get it working. I used it on my N73 like 3 years ago. Video calling for end users hasn't picked up.
Yeah, i'm missing also videocalls on new mobiles.
Seems like HTC dropped that functionnality from all its new phones. And other brands also.
I hope some manufacturers will put back the front cam on their models.
There are some rumors about new iPhone, which will have a front cam... Maybe that will be enough for the front cam to make its come back...
lets hope...
Since the camers is on the keyboard of the new Motorola Backflip, you can have the camera on the back or front of the phone (when the keyboard is open). So far the nearest we have is QIK and that tends to crash the camera after one use. Hopefully an app will come out?.?.?.?
There is nothing special about front camera which needs to be "supported" in kernel.
Implementation of a front camera is not done because android doesn't have a default video dialer. And while now there is at least one app which supports video conferencing, namely fring, phone makers do not make phones to suit a single application.
Yeah, videocalling on android would be pretty awesome. I use it quite often, and my girlfriend uses it all the time because that is the only way she can call her parents who are deaf.
Right now I'm using HTC Diamond but I'm searching for a nice HTC Magic to buy. It's pretty cheap and seems to be nice intro to Android world.
Saygus Vphone
the Saygus Vphone is supposedly going to be released this month on the verizon net work and thats its big claim to fame is 3G video calling, phone is like a moto droid with sliding keyboard, front camera
There's an app called Knocking that is an one-way video feed that works well. It is choppy but I look forward to future improvements as well as the addition of two-way feed.

Link to the release of this phone?
Can't we just get like the files off the HTC Evo as that has a front facing camera, or does the WiMax and CDMA make it a bit harder for the GSM 3G users?
Qik is coming!
the saygus vphone will support it...although, no word on when it will come out (rumored to be may) but no updated news...could be like the others and slip a month...HOWEVER, the press release from sprint just revealed that there would be an "upgrade" available from Qik, at the time the EVO comes out -June 4th! which would enable mobile to mobile video calls or mobile to desktop. It was actually demonstrated tonight at their release event, although it had a few snags...should be good to go in a couple weeks though.
Hello All,
Well I am jsu another cray person like Balaji who started the tread who is like hungry for the front facing cam as the market has FRING offer video @ wifi and 3G. which is like pretty cool stuff. Also i did do a research that Android has the front feature option Taking the android tablets floating around. Will We have the ported WM phone use the front cam like the Kaiser or Touch HD . Inputs appreciated !!

This is a good development. It will be cool to have this feature since the cam is now an indispensable gadget that captures every important moment.
fring use internrt for video calling same as skype, win phone , symbian use 3g network for vid calling..
this is why i still dont buy android phones.. i got 60hrs free vid call per month.. over 3g not internet!!...
I heard gingerbead (android 2.3) support for video call, but i dunno that support 3g network video calling
I looking this feature too, that's why I dont buy android phone, coz I cant make video call over 3g network
well, maybe you can take your time to review this phone since it use froyo inside and have a videocall front camera. but i dunno is it over 3rd party apps or built in.
I have no idea wht you guys are talking about. I have video calling on my HTC EVO using it's front camera. The phone came with Qik on it but I dont like it that much. It's too buggy, the same with Fling. The best I find is Tango which is available on the market. Also the new Gingerbread coming from Android will have it's own video calling app. so you wont have to use a third party app. Bar none the EVO is the best phone , I beleive , out there. Going back as far as the TY-TNII there have been phones with video calling (front ) cameras installed.

Tango needs HTC EVO Beta testers.

Hi,
I work for Tango - the newest player in mobile video calling. Hopefully some of you have been able to play around with our app.
We released our application last week, and have been listening to users on some of the items we need to fix/improve with our application.
I am looking for 5-10 HTC EVO users that can help me out with beta testing our product.
The requirements:
1. You have a HTC EVO and feel comfortable installing Beta software on your phone.
2. You can devote 2-3 hours every few weeks to provide us feedback.
3. You feel comfortable having a video call with me (I promise I'm not that scary).
4. You will not share new features with our competitors.
I would prefer to find people who can test this weekend - we have a big fix regarding our battery consumption that we would like to release ASAP.
Please message me with the following:
1. Name/Email
2. Availability to test over the next few months
3. Experience with Android
4. Phone/Version/Rooted? etc.
Thanks!
Dmitry
I just used tango to video chat with my father. He has a new Evo and I have an Epic, it was great!!!
Wow! That was quick, already have 10 people signed up to test on the EVO.
I would like to find other phones to test with as well (especially Galaxy S), but if you feel very passionately that you can contribute to our beta testing, send me a PM and I'll try and add you to the list.
Thank you SO much!
is this better than skype
you have a PM sir
My wife and I have Evo's , both on Fresh rom. I could test if you want.
A couple questions....
Will Tango only video call/chat with other Tango users, or will it also be able to connect to Skype, Qik, Fring, etc..?
Will there also be a desktop version, for your computer? (This is mainly, if it will only connect to Tango users)
I ask, because I have a friend who has Skype on their computer. Skype blocks connection to Qik and Fring, and currently, iMovicha is only one way video (from what I understand).

You're spot on about Skype blocking connection to Qik and Fring - for this reason we won't be integrating into their platform.
We're hoping to get a desktop client sometime in the near future, but are focusing on the mobile arena first.

Well I tried Epic to Evo, Epic to Iphone4 and Epic to Droid tonight, all worked flawlessly! Really freakin cool! Never seen a video chat thing be so simple!
I wish I had someone to video chat with. My sister has the iphone 3g, and no one I know has an Evo. I'm going to buy one for my GF for her birthday but that's all the way in March.
I'm down to help.
This APP needs to stop running in the background sucking down the EVO's juice. Many people ran and tested this APP last week and just about all of us unistalled it due to MAJOR battery drain and that APP not closing. Fix those things and this thing will be golden, much nicer than Qik and Fring.
Yeah this App needs some work, but looks promising. Was trying to get it to work all day, but a lot of the times I was getting, connection too slow or some other errors - and this was on WiFi. Anyways, tweak the bugs out and sure looks like a winner
I would be down to test it..

I think a bigger issue would be the lack of Google docs support, and the lack of uploading larger videos over 3G instead of WiFi only.

Multiple calendar sync is broken.
Contact data entry is extremely limited compared to the web ui.
I do like that I've made the switch to Android from winmo, but am missing a lot of features that I used to have. I was basically free to do anything, but feel so limited now to what Google is giving us. Hopefully this is resolved soon and we are able to get full functionality from our nexus one devices.

Android has been through 6 MAJOR versions ... if they can't fix the basics, maybe they shouldn't be competing in the space.
Or maybe Google should stop that dumbass policy of only releasing BETA software. Others seem to be able to release software that works fine, admittedly with less features. Get the basics right and then add features one by one and make sure they all work before releasing them.

How do I video chat between MT4G and iPhone 4?

I am sure this has been discussed, but i 0 results when I searched this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php
And from Google search the only thing I found was an application called Tango but some said it wasnt possible :http://www.google.com/search?source...ideo+chat+from+MyTouch+4G+to+iPhone+4&qscrl=1
So, is Tango the way to video chat between MT4G and i4? If so is it the only way? Does it require wifi from both sides or just the iPhone? Thanks for any help, and sorry for asking this for probably the millionth time but I couldnt find the previous discussion...
Why don't you just try it? Like seriously you must be asking this because you want to video chat with someone that has an i4 so tell then to dl tango aand try it... like seriously. Wasting time looking for answers you could easily Come up with. Tango works great, the best imho but if you want to see other video chat services, search video chat or calling in market on both devices and look for common apps...
Sent from my MT4G running Gingerbread
Yahoo Messenger, ooVoo, Tango are your options as of currently.
Thanks for the help. Also, what I'm doing is actually the opposite of "wasting time". My wifes mytouch arrives tomorrow or the next day, i thought I'd search around and figure out how to video chat before it came so I wouldn't waste time messing with various apps that may or may not work. When we both had vibrants we used fring, but since vibrants are such pieces of **** I wound up with an i4 and tmobile exchanged her piece of **** vibrant for a new mytouch. Incidentally, they told us just to keep the piece of **** vibrant, that's what a piece of **** the vibrant is, tmobile didn't even want to try to refurbish the piece of **** because it's such a piece of ****. I know the majority of this post is superfluous but I just hate the samsung vibrant with every fiber of my being I can't help bad mouthing it every chance I get. We went through 7 vibrants between us and not one had working gps.

Look for it on eBay soon it'll be a good starting price, and I think I have at least 1 or 2 extra samsung batteries I'll throw in along with a car mount and a class 6, 8 gb card if I can find it, plus a rubber case and an already perfectly applied screen protector and I guess I'll throw in whatever extra unopened screen protectors I have. I won't stet it at more than $150-$175

First, my sympathies to the OP. I returned the PoS Vibrant at 14 days, many thanks to this fine site for letting me know it was the model, not the sample I received (or its replacement).
I dredged through this forum, and did a search on the wider web trying to find a video chat app for my MT4G, and I didn't find any answer other than the quoted one (which left out Qik).
So. There are 4 options, and NONE of them will talk to any client but their own, is that right?
Which is another way of saying that the FFC is worthless.
Are the software makers such pinheads? The second someone <cough>Google</cough> comes out with video chat that works with Jabber (what Google's Talk uses and iChat can use), all the others become irrelevant. Jabber and Skype would support anyone I ever would video chat with and I'm not holding my breath for Skype to support video anytime soon.
Skype just recently bought out Qik (the video chat on MT4G) and it was announced (or leaked) that they are developing an Android version of their app that supports video calling. It was demoed on the HTC Thunderbolt but isn't available anywhere else yet. So I'm just holding out for Skype because like you said, that's all I would need.

First: Great news!
Second: I said it wrong. I should have said "Once support for Jabber and Skype comes out all the others become irrelevant".
Skype gets me to 1 person who I video chat with. Everyone else uses iChat, signing on to jabber.google.com.
And it was an overstatement for me to say that the FFC is useless w/o Skype or Jabber support. I've used it like a mirror a couple times.

Atrix left out of updated Skype w/ Video

Skype just updated their Android app and stated that those phones not directly on the list but running 2.2 should still be able to manually enable skype via going into settings....unfortunately when I installed it there is no enable video call...
Link to article --> http://www.pcworld.com/article/2372..._on_more_android_smartphones.html#tk.rss_news
Wonder if this is because I'm now on gingerbread and its not enabled generically on 2.3.4 or the other line in the story is if video enablement is not visible in settings it means your phone does not meet minimum requirements (hard to believe as this is more advanced than many of the enabled phones)
Hoping some of our devs can find a hack to enable!!!
So they have, that sucks because I have contacts I would frequently like to call using video.

Outside of Fring which isn't nearly as well known and no PC platform, it would allow you to make video calls to all our iphone contacts plus PC/Mac users.
I've used the yahoo messenger videochat and its not bad, but not nearly as many people use/run yahoo messenger so its not as ubiquitous as skype..

Thanks for the link! I will post on that thread and ask them.
their library does not support the Tegra. Our processor doesn't support NEON architecture, which the Skype video libary uses. there's no way devs can get around it, because they've tried. The main Skype app hacker, droidrx, in the Software forum IS an Atrix owner, ironically. He's enabled video on Skype for dozens of devices but ours will NOT work until Skype makes the library compatible with the Tegra.
see:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153285
Anyone read this before and have access to this kit?
Tegra 2 enables new mobile media and gaming capabilities:
For the first time, consumers will be able to game with multiple players using different types of devices. For example, a Tegra 2-powered super phone or tablet can be used to play with players on a desktop PC.
NVIDIA demonstrated a prototype of Skype HD video calling on an Android tablet at its CES 2011 press conference. NVIDIA developed a reference implementation of HD video conferencing on Tegra 2-based tablets using SkypeKit. SkypeKit is a collection of software and APIs that allows virtually any Internet connected device to offer Skype voice and video calls.
Tango
There is a good option that I just started using which is TANGO. This app is compatible with the iOS devices, and have just announced support for Windows. Skype does not have the slightest intent to support the Tegra CPU.
Come on skype...The atrix community wants video too.
our phone is such the most powerful phone that we dont support skype. gotta love irony eh? ;D
I'm starting to regret getting the Atrix soley based on Tegra 2, it seems to be responsible for more problems than good it does.
:/ Darn. Well this sucks.
we just have to be patient.
i can't wait until the atrix gets skype w/ video.
Dude u dont regret about getting a phone just because you dont have enough support available for it yet. When the phone came out, people who bought it bought 'em not only because its a nice sexy piece of harware but its the most powerful phone of its time.
Lets deal with, things are getting better, bootloader unlocked, new custom roms available, all sorts of hacks are being made available... it will get there when we can make a video call through skype...
just wait not hate..

pretty sad that bigOl' NVidia tegra 1 was fail, not tegra 2 is still missing features. they make some of the best chips, i mean.. come on. at least AMD didnt make it LOL, our phones would be 100C and melt. but still. im sure we will get support sometime, when nokia releases their new Meebo phone they are working on i think im going to go to that for a while and wait to tegra 2 gets fully optimized.

Gingerbread cannot run full profile HD whether it be 720 or 1080P due to lack of NEON code. Which most likely is the same reason why skype video does not work on Tegra 2...Plenty of posts about full profile HD not running on Tegra 2, not now probably not ever...
Skype Video for Tegra 2
IIRC, on CES 2011, nVidia wrote an app using SkypeKit and demoed video calling with the Tegra 2.
So although the official Skype app requires NEON instruction sets, I wonder if it is possible to write an app similar to nVidia's which we know works with Tegra 2.
