thinks its charging.... - Acer Iconia A500

so i've noticed multiple times today (just got it yesterday, rooted) that the charging indicator flashes on and off. this keeps bringing it out of standby. although sometimes the screen turns on without it saying charging but that seems to be a known issue.
but whats up with the charging flashing

full reset and its still doing it
actually i think it has to do something with rooting
i used this http://androidflip.com/how-to-root-acer-iconia-a500-with-stock-honeycomb-3-1/
but i unrooted and uninstalled and its not doing it now....
any other root method for 3.1?

Strange
Never had this issue on my a500 - but have the exact same issue on my Samsung Intercept with a slightly damaged charging port - after unplugging the system will still show as charging and offer to mount as an external storage device - even though it's not plugged into anything.
Had the random screen on when I was still on a 3.0 based rom - have you registered your tablet with Acer and upgraded ota to 3.1? Can also manually flash 3.1 update.
best of luck!

i just updated my last post,
but yeah im on the latest ota 3.1 in the US and registered

(Edit: the method you linked to looks like the same method described here at XDA. May not solve your problem)

well cancel my happiness. did a reboot and now it fully thinks its charging. no flickering.
even plugged it in and unplugged and still says charging.
this time i plugged it in and rebooted. at least the notification went away
edit: and its back.

really strange....
May want to just return it and snag a new one if that is easy/possible.
After your full reset did you do any Modding/install any apps? May be possible something you are running is causing the issue, but I am really stumped on this one.
Could always get cwm running and reset the battery cache, but I am pretty doubtful that is gonna do anything.

same problem for me here.though I did not root my device yet.it shows charging with no charger plugged in.also recognized that my battery indicator sometimes remains on a certain percentage and hangs.after a restart it shows the actual battery level.I am on stock rom 3.0.1...maybe I send it back tomorrow.because this is really enoying...

yup. mine just started doing the hanging at one percentage til reboot

don´t know if it´s software or even hardware related

the fact that we have identical problems makes me think software

Problem with touch-screen not functioning?

Hey guys,
So I loaded RubiX a while back and after getting everything all fancied up the way I wanted it my phone decided that it doesn't like when I touch it (touch-screen stopped responding, the hard keys still worked fine, but I have to serious hold screen-keys down to make anything happen).
I thought this problem was just something in the ROM that my phone didn't like, or a bad setting I changed, so I tried out Liberty ROM (which, by the way, is AWESOME). After getting everything completely made for the Liberty ROM, the exact same thing happened.
In a fit of frustration I decided to start from scratch, root and deodex, then load all my fun settings (like the de-throttle and imoseyon's memory changes) and it all started doing it again. Is there something I don't know about the way the screen works?
Another interesting fact: While I was trying to figure this problem out with my phone (stock with root/deodex and imoseyon's changes) I unplugged it from charging on my comp and now it's running pretty smoothly again... I've been having this problem all day, restarting and clearing cache / loading different ROMs and running restores didn't do anything... this is really strange!
Any idea what this is / has anyone experienced it before. I was just about to call Verizon and reset my phone to stock to get an exchange.
Try running a ROM stock and see what happens. Could be an app...
zehk,
I've tried every combination, including running to stock...
What I know now is that it only happens when phone is charging from a computer... The touchscreen goes completely brain-dead...
Any ideas?
I've had a problem when charging my phone from USB before. Someone said it was the drivers on my PC... might try a newer or older version depending on what you have.
That's an odd problem. Seeing how you have tried to troubleshoot your issue, trying the PC Drivers might indeed help as suggested by zehkaiser.
I would recommend downloading Motorola'as MotoConnect. It's the only driver I use for any Motorola device I hookup to my computer. You can download it here. Hope that helps and if not, sounds like you will have to do a .340 SBF with RSD Lite or the maderstcok zip 340 and return your phone for a new one.
nope
It's not the drivers either, I've now realized that it's happening when I plug into the wall too. I thought that might be due to using an old palm charger, since it's slighty higher amperage, but it turns out the standard moto charger still causes this problem...
My DX does exactly the same thing after unplugging. Any ideas?

I really just want update to 1.141.07

So, I'm on my second a500, first one seemed "off", bad battery life, random shutdowns, etc.
now, I understand some issues are fixed with the 1.141.07 update. I desparately run the system update check like a teenage girl waiting for a boy to call. But no dice.
Is there any way to legitimately get the update?
Seems like people were being updated last week and then nothing...... (crickets chirping).
I'm still not very impressed with my second unit. screen on/off thing drives me crazy. I dont think the battery should be draining when in standby. etc.
I know that nobody here works for Acer, so dont flame me. But if I can;t get a reliable android tab, I think I may run back and get an Ipad2 instead. I have had an ipad 1 since release, and I guess i'm spoiled to only needing to charge the thing once a week, and I use it heavily.
I really want a android tab though - I'm a big google person and love having all my stuff in sync and connected. But I dont like having to live next to the power outlet, or wonder when my unit is going to randomly restart. I'm sure there are others in the same boat.
My first one runs great, just bought a second one at Costco with the fabulous deal they have. I have no battery run down issues. Auto brightness, Wifi, and gps all on....except when in for sleep mode. I turn on Airplane mode on and off through a downloaded toggle widget.
I've been using it periodically for 3 days and haven't turned it off. Even started a new book with Kindle. Still have 55% battery.
I'd say you are running a bad app which is the culprit. I bet if you go back to stock reset you won't have the issues, other than sleep without airplane mode.
...and no, we are all waiting for the update or 3.1, whichever comes first. I need it for Exchange, everything else is pretty minor.
I guess I should have mentioned. my first unit, I did a factory reset and ran stock for a couple of days, and still had the same issues.
This new unit is pretty much stock, and only thing I have installed is Flash, Kindle, and File manager HD.I have it running in airplane mode, wifi set to turn off when the screen is off, and screen brightness at about 10%.
I charged it all night, I have used it maybe 3 times today (since 6am), just to browse a couple of sites, and @2:30 today the battery was already @ 40%. it has been in standby most of the day.
I find it hard to believe that 2 different units could perform so poorly.
I really want to love this product, but haivng a hard time doing so, lol
The thing you described should be fixed with the 3.1 update...be patient.

I too am waiting for the .141.07 update. Seems I read that Acer had pulled the updates. Still check every day. I like my tablet and have not seen battery issues with very little standby drain.
The only issue I have is that the WiFi keeps disconnecting. I have checked the advanced settings and it is set at always connected and I have tried changing the channel on my router (suggested elsewhere) but once or twice an hour I have to bump the WiFi to get it to work.

yup, did that on both units.
so, I made it 12 hours today on a single charge. I only used it 3 times to browse the web for about 5 min (no flash), and I wrote an email and sent it.
Sorry, but that is ridiculous.

Mine has been fine, except for the GPS.
I have a build 1.112.01_EMEA_CUS7. A new tablet and it's registered from today so they probably update them by batches because there are no new updates.
EDIT: But it works brilliantly apart from the crashes when I've installed any app. I've fixed that but it would be nice to be bug free.

You are lucky. There is a update from Acer here for your build. It will take you directly to 1.141.01.
You need to unzip it using this post and then move the extracted update.zip from the decoded.zip file to your external sdcard and then do the update key sequence (volume down and power pressed) and you're done
Thanks. I'm updating as I type this.
I just hope that it will update properly and that I won't have any problems with rooting and or bricking my device or any problems that I've already solved.
I come from Desire so I'm used to wiping my phone first so just updating is a new for me. I would also feel better if our bootloader would be unlocked.
EDIT: Updated OK. Root pending.
EDIT2: Rooted and disabled phone.apk
The phone now works perfectly and is updated.

This is an official update so it will either update or not if the checksums are wrong or it cannot binary patch a file. So no chance of a brick.
It works OK. The only thing I've noticed is the longer boot time.
The android screen takes a minute longer probably because it's building files.
I'll check logcat when I have the time and patience to mess with it some more.
I didn't know that the update would just fail. I was expecting a brick because I was reading some posts about people bricking their tablets. I guess I was wrong.
Feedback from Acer Support re Updates, Etc.
According to Acer tech support, there is no way to force the new firmware update or Honeycomb update to the Tab. You just have to be patient and wait for the Tab to update itself.
As we know, lots of people are complaining about the screen turning on/off/on/off by itself, resulting in battery drain. These complaints are well-publicized and easily found using search engines.
I first purchased a 16gb Iconia Tab. I called tech support about the flashing screen and reported it as an issue. After speaking with customer support, they emailed me a survey asking about my user experience with the Tab. I completed that survey and again noted the problem with the flashing screen and battery drain.
The new firmware update that was pushed to the device solved the flashing screen issue and improved battery life.
Then I bought a 32 gb Tab and experienced the same flashing screen/battery drain issue. I called tech support (to see if I could obtain the firmware update for the new Tab). Amazingly, tech support told me that they had never heard of this issue. I told them to search their knowledge base but they insisted this was the first time they heard about a problem with the screen.
I know that cannot be true because I called them twice about this very issue, and gave them feedback in their on-line survey.
Anyway, I expect that the screen problem will be resolved when the firmware update gets pushed to the device. Unfortunately, on my first 16gb TAB I got the firmware update the day after I opened the box. I'm still waiting for that update on the 32gb Tab after 10 days.

I had this issue. It's because of the wifi. My screen would turn on and off randomly and it was because my wifi was on my place where it had bad reception. I turned it off and the screen didn't light up anymore.
I didn't test if it also occurs on the new firmware.

Could be a brick, Could be hardware...

A Little History: :silly:
I have been running i9220ZCLP1...known bad kernel since whenever it was first available, April I think. Anyways, acquired that through flashing Rocketrom v5, according to the instructions provided at the time. Everything worked fine, other than contacts crashing and the wlan some times not enabling until reboot...common issues, as far as I've seen on these forums. One thing to note, is that unless the instructions at the time asked for a full wipe after flashing 5 (I'm almost certain they did not), then there has not been a full wipe performed while in this kernel.
The current issue:
The other day my phone froze on me...months after flashing and having used this kernel, waiting for something more solid to come out. After it froze...holding the power button turned it off, but the phone would not boot afterwards...to ics, to recovery, to download mode, nothing.
After some fiddling, I realized that it will charge and once it buzzes and the screen comes on showing a full battery, I can turn the phone on and it will boot...then freeze after getting past unlock screen. Or freeze and go black in download mode...didn't try recovery, wasn't interested in it at the time, but I'd imagine the same.
After removing the battery for a few days, then plugging it in til full charge notification, I was able to get it to boot again, where it froze at the boot screen, but went dark. After one more full charge...oddly, like a minute later, it booted to ICS fine and worked for 24 hours or so.
Now:
With a mind to flashing away from the bad kernel, I restarted the phone tonight from the menu in ics... it booted fine, so I left it plugged in to get a full charge and came back to a phone, screen still on, that shows same battery % as when I left it. And I'm back to where I started with this problem, powered off after holding power button a few seconds and now nothing.
Waiting for a full charge again, to see what happens...I'm guessing/hoping I'll be able to get it to boot again, with some more fiddling...
My question is whether this sounds like it's hardware (battery etc) or software (bad kernel etc) that is causing the problem.
If I can get it into download mode...plugged in, obviously, should I try OdinPC to a safe kernel?
Thoughts would be awesome. :fingers-crossed:

+1 I've read a few people on ICS having charging/battery related issues over time. Worth seeing if it still happens on a gb kernel.

[HELP] The usb on my n4 won't communicate with anything, no matter what.

I just transferred a movie on it two days ago. I have been on a road trip the past week and using a car adapter during that week (2.1 amp) and navigation. and navigation. Yesterday I was staying at someone else's house and kept losing signal in their house a lot and the battery went down fast. I plugged it into the way to charge like I have every night. When I went to bed I checked and it hadn't really charged at all. So I closed the location stuff that had destroyed the battery and went to bed. I woke up in the middle of the night to my phone vibrating from a reboot and it was ridiculously hot. It hadn't charged much. I used it for navigation on the way home and it charged in the car at a pretty normal speed. When I got home it won't connect to my computer.
I can't get adb to work, in the OS or recovery. Doesn't get recognized in the bootloader either. I tried multiple computers. It sometimes shows up as 'unknown device' and I uninstalled it once thinking i could re install it and it never showed up again.
I would go back to stock to try and fix it if I could, but I can't transfer anything to my phone.

Same here. I am still searching for a workaround. I think it is a USB brick.
Download a ROM from XDA onto your phone and boot into recovery from the power button (assuming you have something like CM10.1 installed. I'm sure there are other apps that can boot into recovery also). Then you can wipe/flash from there and start fresh and see if the problem persists. No need for ADB here.

I installed almost every ROM and kernel there is, there's no connection via USB and the battery life is just terrible (around 6 hours until it's completely empty).
Read through some of your posts Ultraschorsch and I'm definitely in the same boat. I have airdroid to transfer files, but it's slow. I'm gonna try to go to the deodexed stock rom and kernel (but still rooted), and hope I get lucky.
I've already gone into recovery and wiped and reflashed in every combination I could think of and that hasn't helped. It's very frustrating.
I seems like it heated up so much that it destroyed the usb chip on it or something, and it wiped the info of what kind of device it's supposed to be or something. It was seriously so hot that I couldn't hold it in my hand (and that's with a case on it).
This is really a pain in the neck since we can't unroot it any more, so no RMA for us, I really hope there will be a solution to this problem. On the HTC Desire it was fixed through CWM but they need to find a workaround before. I am really a little hopeless...
I use dropbox to transfer files on my N4, I think it's faster than airdroid.

This is what I'm going to do and try to get an RMA tomorrow.
Also, I feel like the only solution would be to open the device. It seems like something actually broke when it overheated when this happened, so it needs to be replaced. whatever IT is.

Hello all,
This is my first post in here and the reason why I'm here, is that I got the exact problem as mentioned in the opening post.
I've got my N4 last thursday, so 1 week ago. It worked like a charm and since I was busy finding out all the stuff and apps, I hadn't connect it to my PC before the weekend started.
Saturday in the morning I left for a trip and I navigated to the destination, using my car charger. The phone became extremely hot but it was the first time I tried the navigation, so I tought it was 'normal'.
That day and the days after (until today) my battery drained like hell, 6 hours standby with max. 45 minutes of active usage and it is empty.
So I started looking out for a custom ROM to solve it. But I never could connect it properly to my PC. Tried different PC's and different cables. Never a proper connection, only 'usb not recognized' or no connection at all!
Luckily I couldn't connect...because now it's still in the unlocked state as when I got it.
Today I'm going to call the company where I've bought it and ask for an RMA. Only problem is...they imported it from another country since the device isn't for sale in my country (Netherlands).
I'll keep you up to date.

Anyone else experiencing touchscreen issues while charging?

The strangest thing just happened to me. While I was charging my OPT it failed to register my fingerprint. Upon asking me for my pin, the touchscreen acted very erratic, and after 5 seconds stopped working completely. The moment I disconnect the charge cable everything works fine!
If my calc or any other app is open it also registers a lot of touches without touching the screen. It's nothing you can replicate. Kinda spooky actually lol.
I've tried a couple of things already, rebooted, killed most apps, checked the charge cable (original) and port but to no avail.
I have the US version and am on the latest stock ota, but rooted. I'm about to do a restore and after that clean install if necessary. I just wanna check if anyone experienced this before.
I will lost back if I get to the bottom of this. Hopefully it's not the hardware.

Thats not great news burnoutslo! It's pretty annoying that you can't use your phone while charging. I've noticed that once it reaches 100% everything's ok again so it definitely seems software related, probably android if other devices have the same problems. I will do a nand restore back to the previous oxygen version over the weekend. Hopefully it solves my problems.

I observed same thing yesterday,
The whole scenario was-
Yesterday when my battery gone below 15% i ran for the charger and plugged in and after that i started using phone and i noticed that my touchscreen becomes less responsive.
Difficulty in swiping between home screen, opening of apps during swiping.
So the solution i found that if i stand on the ground barefooted then only i am having this problem, when i put slippers on then its perfectly fine.
So may be it is some kind of grounding issue.
same here; issues sometimes when charging; I didn't see the differences between sleeper and barefoot but I also think it's a ground problem...

I had once this issue on cm12.1 oneplus 2 . What I did to solve this problem successfully.
1. I removed case from my phone . This causes grounding issues sometimes.
2. Reflashed OxygenOS.
3. Then I flashed cm on top of it. Wiped data, cache, dalvik only. didn't wiped system partition.
4. That's it. I'm. I'm typing right now while charging. Totally perfect.
I noticed it more with my cheaper USB C cables.
I bought a half dozen and some are better than others.
the boxed cable that was stock is the best by far.
Yesterday i aux in my phone to a audio player and observed the same problem again with touchscreen. Feeling very annoyed because of this and other bugs.
My phone used to lock up completely for up to 30 seconds after plugging in the charger. After move to cyanogenmod 13 this does not happen anymore, so obviously a bug in OxygenOS.

Hmm, this is generally not a problem with your phone or your software, but relates to the power supply. Noise in the power or grounding issues specifically cause the 'ghost touches' and erratic behaviour you describe. If you are lucky, your charger and cable are also fine and the issue is with the power socket, in which case you need an electrician to come and take a look. If its the charger/cable, then simply get a new one and you are good to go.
To figure out where the issue is, start by using the same charger + cable in a different location (completely different physical location). If the problem persists, then try changing the cable in that same location. If it still persists, try a different charger.
If the problem is NOT there at the alternate location, then chances are its your wiring and you need an electrician to sort this out for you.
