Tab 10.1 and Samsung D7000 and D8000 TVs - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

If you guys havent heard you can link your GSII or Tab 10.1 to your D7000 or D8000 tv but I havent been able to find the app to do so. I believe its called Samsung Wireless Link. This allows you to mirror your TV on to your tablet. Anyone got this working or have more information about it?

I orginally bought the 55" D7000 on Amazon and it was defective. I returned it and bought the 46" D8000. I talked to a TV tech about the models and he claims the D8000 has significantly better black levels and was raving about the micro dimming plus blah blah... he also went on to say that on TV's smaller then 55" you wont notice much of a difference between the 7 and the 8 series. Since I was saving a bunch of money on the smaller size TV I went for the D8000. One thing I noticed is the D8000 does come with glasses which I didnt really need since I got the 3D Starter Kit bundle and Bluray Player for free through the Amazon promotion. I like the glasses that came with the D8000 better though and while I initially liked the bezel on the 7000 better I now really like the 8000 bezel. It's a very sweet TV I have it plugged into my router and I can stream 1080p mkv and mkv3d files no problem with no additional software/hardware needed. You just need some DLNA server software and your good to go. I can also stream 3D content from my Evo 3D to the TV via DLNA over wifi. Pretty cool. I'm hoping this new update for the Tab 10.1 with TouchWiz adds this mirroring capability that they talk about here: http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/samsung-d8000-d7000-streaming-galaxy-201102221034.htm

They pulled the touch remote for the USA release. From what I hear its crap anyways although you can buy it separately if youd like. I LOVE the remote that it did come with however (both the 7 and the 8 came with the same remote)... I think you are on the other side of the pond though so it may come with the UE models, mines a UN. I read something about only the D8000 coming with the touch remote and only on the UE models. Could be BS though. The remote mine came with is a qwerty keyboard on one side, remote control on the other side. It's backlight which is great, I've never had a backlight remote before haha. I'm easily impressed I guess...

Dev Request - HDMI Desktop Out

Ok, I'm getting this "phone". I've been sitting around waiting for a release date for what seems like a year now, lol.
Here is my one request, from the marvelous XDA dev community, who has never ceased to amaze me in the years I've been here.
I want this thing to do HDMI out. I'm not talking pushing a YouTube video out of the HDMI port, I want to see Android on my 24" monitor. I want to be able to use a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard to run the controls, and I want to be able to dock my Streak and use it on a larger display. 720p/1080p would be a huge bonus, but I have no idea what limitations are in place there.
Ok, that's it. Make that happen, and I will be very happy.
If you pay £55 for the Dell Home AV Kit it will do this I believe......
Granted, I don't have a Streak on which to try it out...but isn't that only for videos (YouTube, video files, etc)? As far as I'm aware, you don't get the actual desktop, right?
I don't have one either, but in a video I saw it appeared that the dock only pushes the video through the HDMI and not the android "desktop."
I too would love to be able to do this though!
Ah right thats not too good then, the Samsung Galaxy seems to be TV-Out and just replicated the system as on the screen, I'm thinking of buying a Nokia N900 to play with as it has TV out and would let me play SNES / Mega Drive games etc when I'm in a hotel room.
I wonder if full TV Out is something we could hack
£55 is a lot for just movies out...i was hoping for full android on my big tv

Yeah, that's for sure. Big deal, if I wanna watch just movies, I'll find a computer and do it. The power of HDMI-out is in being able to use Android on your phone on the go, and then docking it and using it as a netbook-replacement when at a desk (or as a HTPC when in the living room, etc.)
Give it a few months once the Chinese get their hands on it and they will churn out the Accessories and flood ebay
I need this also for a bmw idrive integration. I'm sure the community will crack it.

I just bought a BMW with the new 1280 pix CiC I-Drive display. With a Motorola Bionic, I'm hoping to send TV to the phone via SlingBox and send the HDMI out from the phone to the display in the car.
Thoughts?

Hdmi out is limited to video and audio....why?

This might be a rant, so I apologist up front but..........
When the dock costs 50 quid why does it only allow the video and audio to be outputted?
What I was hoping is that it could see the operating system and effectively act as a monitor and therefore a portable computer.

This is what majority of owners want - to watch a movie on TV and play some music.
The ability to have desktop on TV is useless for them - you cannot touch TV screen to press a button anyway...
But you can touch the dell, therefore touch screen monitor not required.
I also have 3 devices for watching films on my tv (cable, ps3 and dvd player) why do I need another one. But if I could replace them with something better I would.
The present function is not better but in fact worse as I have remotes for my other players
Hdmi out for the full phone means you can browse the internet, check emails via the tv, this becomes a media center that could rival apples iTv. As you could watch hulu, most british tv, love film streams, amazon etc straight from the device. If it was done via wireless or then it would be a remote also, the perfect device.
Short sighted developers and a lack of understanding of what is possible is the only thing blocking it.

You don't have to convince me that it is nice use case.
I am only saying that from Dell point of view it is so rare, that it's not worth working on it. ROI is to low.
You may support my effort for porting Maemo/MeeGo to Streak, though.
Maemo/MeeGo offers everything you mentioned and more.
Ie. I already have a working setup with bluetooth keyboard and mouse connected to my Nokia N900, which is connected to TV for display.
it would be preferable if the screen stayed "on" the telly (or monitor?) for everything though - saves going back and forth between the two screens. Can understand why it's not a priority for Dell though, but I think they'd sell more docks if it DID do full output....i'd probably buy one then!
I presume it's not possible for someone to develop something?..............

It seems at this point you won't be able to mirror your device without some additional hardware/software combo. Google wants you to start a google hardware family, which isn't out of the question if the price of the Q comes down some and there's some functionality that makes it worth it.
As it is now though everything I have with a screen talks to everything else with a screen but its still a bit haphazard to serve media in any different direction.
Hope this makes sense lol!

To do what you are saying requires a Mobile High Definition link ~ aka an MHL connection which in turn goes to the HDMI port on a TV. Earlier cables (Samsung Galaxy S) could connect to a VGA port on a TV.
Unfortunately the Nexus does not come with any MHL capability otherwise we would by now be hearing of an MHL cable that you attach to the power socket (as is done on Samsung devices).
DNLA only links media files, as in Music, Photo's and Video. For that you need dedicated software to stream which has already been mentioned above.
Isn't possible any app to catch on a Google TV device and vice versa kind sling box for androids devices?

Android is lacking here big time, apple has airplay through apple tv to show the screen on the tv and play games etc throught it, all wirelessly.
Android needs this... and fast!
VNC client and server apps exist, so if you want to display your screen on an android enabled TV you should be able to do it with VNC?
Its a WIFI enabled Smart TV I have... can use all share on s2 to share videos and music to it, but cannot mirror your screen, its something they need to resolve soon.
What can I do if my TV doesnt have DNLA, and the N7 doesnt support MHL.
Is there any other way? USB to VGA cable?

It's nothing to do with Android it's ASUS and Google who are lacking.....
You have the S2 and that can link direct to your TV using as you say Allshare and for anything else you would use an MHL adapter as the S2 has MHL built in.
If the Nexus had an Allshare alternative built in and DLNA support you would be able to show media files on your TV..... and again if the Nexus had MHL built in you would then be able to use an MHL adapter and mirror your Nexus screen with your TV.
I'm not talking about the nexus in particular I mean android as a whole needs some kind of solution or they are going to fall behind. Our should I say they'll never catch up on that regard. Can you point me to am mhl adapter to check out out

The only way Android would have it as a whole is if Google demanded all manufacturers ensured the MHL hardware specification be built within their devices and that simply is not going to happen.
MHL is not a prerequisite of Android it's an added extra that runs totally independent. Yes the iDevice has it which makes it sound like Android is lacking but the iDevice is just one manufacturer. Just as Samsung is a manufacturer and yes they have MHL built in their devices, so it would be wrong to compare Apple to Google in this shortcoming.
As to pointing you to an MHL adapter, you can find these easily in either ebay or Google. The trouble is though if you intend to use it with the Nexus 7 you will be wasting you money. As I have already said, the Nexus 7 does not have MHL capability so it would not be able to read an MHL adapter.

Unlike the lack of USB OTG (On-The-go) which is a simple software limitation (as rooting then using Stickmount allows complete access) MHL is different as it is a hardware limitation. Google obviously left this out (as they did with other ports such as MicroSD) to keep the costs down.

I've got an UE55ES7000. How to mirror the display content to the TV without the AllShare Cast Dongle?
Screen mirroring only works with TV's with the very latest version of wifi direct / miracast - have a look at this thread, it is discussed in detail. The only working method available to you at present is the allshare cast dongle.

I have the UA55D7000, a 2011 Samsung TV. It was on the list they 1st supplied as compatible but after almost pulling out and losing most of my hair trying to get it working, I went and got the dongle.
Works fine now but considering the adverts were showing that you didn't need the dongle and were making fun of the guy in the business meeting who didn't bring his, this was a major letdown. Especially since it cost another $90 on top...
I do find it useful though...
I have the Allshare cast dongle. It does work really well. I use it to mirror my GT-N8010 screen to a data projector. My data projector is quite old and does not have HDMI in so I had to buy a HDMI to VGA digital to analogue converter too. However it now means I can present off my Note and I am not constrained by cables.

Wireless Display TV's (UK)

Stick with the LGs for wireless display & Miricast with the N4. Argos and Currys were both doing decent deals recently.
The 42ln575v @ Argos/Currys for 370 or the 42ln578v for 399 at Currys are decently priced
The LG remote app in the play store is pretty good and some models come with nfc tags to launch the remote etc.
I picked up a similar one, a little better panel than the above one and am really pleased so far and the NowTV passes for Sky movies and sports will come in handy too. I'd recommend it, but the price has gone back up on it....

So any TV that says built in wifi, will that do the job or is it LG technology?
edit: This it? http://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/lg/39ln575v/lg-39ln575v £40 cheaper
To be honest, I don't know.
Some other TVs may play nicely with Miracast on the N4. Some may not have used the standard to the letter or may have done a custom implementation of wireless display and may not work properly.
If you find a model you prefer I'd either test it in the shop or google "nexus 4 +TVmodel wireless display" at least.
Let me say that it was one of my considerations in getting an LG but even if it didn't work I still would have gotten the TV I did. The LG is a nice tv.
I have never had a problem with LG t.v,s and personally recommend them also , have used both mirror cast via wifi and slimport both without any problems.
That also goes for Toshiba.
One company I have read a lot of problems with is Samsung , all be it I bet the sg3 /sg4 work fine with them.
So I guess you known were I am coming from LG nexus 4 = LG T.V. Samsung t.v = s4 / s3. Just my thoughts and not exact science.

I don't know. If you already had a tv you were happy with otherwise then sure, the ptv is a reasonable addition.
If you find a great deal on a cheaper/nonsmart tv then it would be a good alternative as well, but if you're only going to be saving £20 to £30 I'm not sure it would be worth it.
Have you considered a slimport adaper or a chromecast?

Sadly not. Its very very limited. Before I was able to play my offline music on tv but Google decided to block that feature with an update . Only plays music purchased from Google music.
The YouTube updates made it worst. I connect it to my Tv; play one video. All going well. But if my Nexus 4 screen goes to sleep it stops working. If I want play next video; I have to reconnect it to my TV.
Oh and after switching my router security to wpa2; chromecast cannot be detected anymore. I searched online and it's not only me. Now, It's just sitting on my computer table collecting dust.

Mirrorcast and chromecast both rely on wifi.
Tried both and personally prefer slimport its dam cooool.
Games are hard to play thought as you need sometimes to look at the phone to hit the buttons e.t.c which means you're not concentrating on the T.V.
If you get one of them game controllers you should be o.k.
It would need to be a Bluetooth one or one that doesn't connect to the micro USB out socket as you need that for the slimport.
Sorry I no nothing about controllers as I have never used one.
