It seems at this point you won't be able to mirror your device without some additional hardware/software combo. Google wants you to start a google hardware family, which isn't out of the question if the price of the Q comes down some and there's some functionality that makes it worth it.
As it is now though everything I have with a screen talks to everything else with a screen but its still a bit haphazard to serve media in any different direction.
Hope this makes sense lol!

Luckily my lg smart tv has dnla so can stream from macbook / nexus over WiFi to tv.

I only used my nexus 7 for like 2 days because I returned it due to battery problem and I didn't have enough time to check to stream to my smart TV (DNLA). My phone can stream to my smart TV (DNLA). I'm waiting for nexus 7 to be in stock again. In the mean time, how did you get your nexus 7 to stream to your smart TV?

How did you get your phone to stream to your smart TV over dnla? The only way I can see if using the All Share app, but that doesn't mirror the screen, basically I want to push my games on to the big screen if possible...

You can use either of these (available in play store) if your TV supports DLNA connection.
Twonky Mobile or BubbleUPnP

But isn't this the same as using Allshare (on the samsung s2)?
I am mainly looking to mirror the screen so I can play games etc on the big screen.

To do what you are saying requires a Mobile High Definition link ~ aka an MHL connection which in turn goes to the HDMI port on a TV. Earlier cables (Samsung Galaxy S) could connect to a VGA port on a TV.
Unfortunately the Nexus does not come with any MHL capability otherwise we would by now be hearing of an MHL cable that you attach to the power socket (as is done on Samsung devices).
DNLA only links media files, as in Music, Photo's and Video. For that you need dedicated software to stream which has already been mentioned above.

Isn't possible any app to catch on a Google TV device and vice versa kind sling box for androids devices?

Android is lacking here big time, apple has airplay through apple tv to show the screen on the tv and play games etc throught it, all wirelessly.
Android needs this... and fast!

VNC client and server apps exist, so if you want to display your screen on an android enabled TV you should be able to do it with VNC?

Its a WIFI enabled Smart TV I have... can use all share on s2 to share videos and music to it, but cannot mirror your screen, its something they need to resolve soon.

What can I do if my TV doesnt have DNLA, and the N7 doesnt support MHL.
Is there any other way? USB to VGA cable?

It's nothing to do with Android it's ASUS and Google who are lacking.....
You have the S2 and that can link direct to your TV using as you say Allshare and for anything else you would use an MHL adapter as the S2 has MHL built in.
If the Nexus had an Allshare alternative built in and DLNA support you would be able to show media files on your TV..... and again if the Nexus had MHL built in you would then be able to use an MHL adapter and mirror your Nexus screen with your TV.

I'm not talking about the nexus in particular I mean android as a whole needs some kind of solution or they are going to fall behind. Our should I say they'll never catch up on that regard. Can you point me to am mhl adapter to check out out

The only way Android would have it as a whole is if Google demanded all manufacturers ensured the MHL hardware specification be built within their devices and that simply is not going to happen.
MHL is not a prerequisite of Android it's an added extra that runs totally independent. Yes the iDevice has it which makes it sound like Android is lacking but the iDevice is just one manufacturer. Just as Samsung is a manufacturer and yes they have MHL built in their devices, so it would be wrong to compare Apple to Google in this shortcoming.
As to pointing you to an MHL adapter, you can find these easily in either ebay or Google. The trouble is though if you intend to use it with the Nexus 7 you will be wasting you money. As I have already said, the Nexus 7 does not have MHL capability so it would not be able to read an MHL adapter.

nexus 7 is miracast certified, and that's rolling out this fall. patience is a virtue... and/or a software update. -Ara

Sorry to double-post, but while we're on the subject, is it that we lack hardware to get mhl working or we need to program support into the existing setup and we could achieve mhl with a custom ROM. I can mhl off my phone (I think). -Ara

Unlike the lack of USB OTG (On-The-go) which is a simple software limitation (as rooting then using Stickmount allows complete access) MHL is different as it is a hardware limitation. Google obviously left this out (as they did with other ports such as MicroSD) to keep the costs down.

[Q] buying Nexus 7 - newbie help

Hey there, i will be buying my first tablet - Nexus 7 (32gb) as i will be using it for gaming, reading, watching TV shows/movies etc
My main concern was regarding connecting storage devices
1. How could i connect the tablet with a USB Flash-drive? could i use an OTG USB Connector to sync the two so i can get data from my flash-drive via the tablet? is there a specific one i should get or any should work and where can i buy one. is it compatible?
2. As there is no HDMI input, how can i connect the tablet to my TV, if i wanted to show pictures on the TV. Could i get the MHL Cable HDMI connector, as i saw best buy carries them.
Thank you

yes this supports usb otg cable and it works flawlessely and you can also stream movies from usb flash drive
just google it how to use otg cable on nexus 7
and for the hdmi i doubt i heard that this tab doesnt support?? but still not sure
You can attach an OTG cable. You can either do it rooted or you can get apps to help you stream data from the external drive. Many people like to use Nexus media importer, though it's a paid app. People buy from 80 cent cables to $5+ ones and work fine. Just read reviews on what you plan to buy.
There is no HDMI support though in 4.2 update that is coming out soon, you can stream to your TV if you get an adapter.
While I love my N7, if you are huge on media consumption, you might want to look at the kindle fire HD. The only downside is that you are stuck in the amazon ecosystem but it has the HDMI support.

The above is only a rumor.. Its not confirmed.. Matter a fact there is some speculation that the device is not capable for full mira-cast encoding.

[Q] How Do You Screen Share like this?

In this Google Christmas video, at :32 seconds in, it show wireless screen sharing on the N4. How do you do that?
Thx

It's the built in features called Miracast. It's only compatible with other Miracast devices and I don't think there are many, if any TV's that support it right now.

Oh cool. Thanks. That feature would've come in handy on Christmas Eve when everyone wanted to Karaoke off YouTube. I ended up hooking up my MacBook Pro to the TV.

Yeah you have to buy a Miracast adapter or a TV with it built in. Alternatively, you can buy a Slimport HDMI and plug it onto your TV from that (~$30) http://www.amazon.com/SlimPort®-SP1...&qid=1356573162&sr=8-1&keywords=slimport+hdmi
It's not worth the trouble really. Just hook your laptop up as you did. Wireless display technology just isn't there yet.

It's new technology but it is there. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/intel-wireless-display.html
Pretty much all new laptops have that, the TV just needs a adapter or it built into the Tv.

I've got an UE55ES7000. How to mirror the display content to the TV without the AllShare Cast Dongle?
Screen mirroring only works with TV's with the very latest version of wifi direct / miracast - have a look at this thread, it is discussed in detail. The only working method available to you at present is the allshare cast dongle.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847290
I have the 7000 series Samsung, it has the allshare app on it, do I still need the dongle for mirror? Also is there an app the tablet has to use to mirror?

Yeah big style, lots of promises, total failure.
complete failure. I cannot even find any documentation on my TV that says yes or no that is has WIDI
I have the 6800. You can send video and photos to allshare play. You can now even control the youtube app for the tv with the updated youtube app for android. But true mirroring is not possible untill i got the dongle.
To be honest mirroring isnt really that usefull, only really if you want to game.

I have the UA55D7000, a 2011 Samsung TV. It was on the list they 1st supplied as compatible but after almost pulling out and losing most of my hair trying to get it working, I went and got the dongle.
Works fine now but considering the adverts were showing that you didn't need the dongle and were making fun of the guy in the business meeting who didn't bring his, this was a major letdown. Especially since it cost another $90 on top...
I do find it useful though...
I have the Allshare cast dongle. It does work really well. I use it to mirror my GT-N8010 screen to a data projector. My data projector is quite old and does not have HDMI in so I had to buy a HDMI to VGA digital to analogue converter too. However it now means I can present off my Note and I am not constrained by cables.
no S4 screen mirroring

[Q]Nexus as second display?

I want to connect my Nexus to my PS3 via HDMI cable so I can play "on the go". I have a HDMI to MicroHDMI adapter and a HDMI cable, Nexus isn't rooted yet.
So is this possible? it would be kind of nice to be able to do.
Thanks.

Unfortunately it's impossible to do a hardware based video input. Wireless however though I'm not sure.

I would do some searching around and see if there is anything PS3 related to display mirroring and then see if they use display mirroring standards that would recognize the Nexus 10 running something like AirDisplay.
It's definitely possible via PC or Mac to Android but my guess is anything that is available for PS3 is going to be something where you'll need to ability to run homebrew on PS3. Also, keep in mind, at least with my Mac to N10 experiences, I am only getting frame rates in the neighborhood of 5-10fps, so that's not going to cut it unless you've got a checkers or chess PS3 game.
Does your device has Dlna ? you may use it

Is there anyway to connect the s7 edge to tv with hdmi??

I am aware that samsung made some hardware changes so MHL dont work. But is there any workaround ? I wanna play my emulators on tv.

My work around recomendation assuming u simply want to mirror ur screen to ur tv is going wireless. What i use is push2tv. I love it! I use it on my truck to watch movies n mainly for my daughter to watch toons. Mirror my screen, put youtube and its all set. One of my reasons for ditching apple.
Chromecast, but if you want something more general / doesn't require WIFI:

Its still not good enough as wired though. I use HDMI cable when I travel abroad in hotels aånd places without wifi so I can play games on tv.
Not sure if this wifi streaming thing works on a hotel wifi. But its good for home use when I wanna play some retro games on emulators ok tv.

It requires a device that supports Miracast (or WiDi), which includes most smartphones and many laptops. This device turns any display with HDMI into one that supports Miracast (some newer TV's support this out of the box). Also I've heard there might be some lag, so it isn't the best for gaming.
I use mhl cable (5pin) on my s7 edge
