When I play 720p.BluRay.X264 mkv file on my Galaxy S2 there is no sound. I tried the integrated player, mVideoPlayer and MoboPlayer. The sound track on MoboPlayer is shown as 1:6CH, 48000Hz. Do I need any audio codec to play the video with sound or there is nothing I can do to whatch theese files on my new Galaxy S2? Thanks for your answers in advance.

Unfortunately it is a trial version and not free. Do you know free player that will play the audio?
Check if it has DTS audio, the S2 has some trouble playing DTS audio. You should probably convert the audio to AAC or get video files that don't use DTS.
Yep, its probably DTS audio, in which case Diceplayer is what you need. Its well worth the price I think.

Most likely the audio-stream is encoded with DTS, which isn´t supported by the Galaxy S II.
It can play AAC, MP3 or AC3.
Do I need any audio codec to play the video with sound or there is nothing I can do to whatch theese files on my new Galaxy S2? Thanks for your answers in advance.

You can´t install any media-codecs on Android, like you can do it in Windows.
Obviously mediaplayers can bring their own decoders, but this means decoding on the CPU, which is slow and eats much more battery-power.
So it is best to encode the audio-stream in one of the supported formats

You mean video and audio is not synchronous?
That´s because, it plays video and audio separately. Basically the Player uses the media-framework to play the video without sound, so it can use the DSP.
Then it plays the sound separately, using a built in software-decoder.
This most likely also means reading the file twice, although some caching maybe prevents the need to actually read it twice from the permanent storage.
So it is a quite inefficient way to play the video. The player doesn´t know the internal timings of the media-framework, so it doesn´t really know when to play the audio. But most players should allow to set a custom audio-delay.
It is also possible that there simply isn´t enough CPU-power left to do the decoding in software.

could you post your movie file info? and what is the diceplayer's version?
There are some known problems to play HD MKVs.
1. 24bit Flac Audio is not supported
2. microsd card class ( transfer rate ) issue.
3. Wrong MKV time stamp issue.

I'm a bit disappointed with the mplayer. I have several clips which I could play with the Toshiba Mediaplayer and these did not work very well in the mplayer.
I should mention that the clips were 720p and 1080p, but when played with the Toshiba Mediaplayer (which use hardware acceleration) the Folio plays them without breaking any sweat.
I think we have to wait for a video player that use the Tegra 2 hardware instead of using the CPU to decode mkv.
Yes, I did some testing myself and I was disappointed with the quality. Normal SD AVIs from web were pixelized. There was no antialias or smoothing. The pixels of video were just magnified.
Rockplayer with HW support produced much better output.
Maybe for some formats not supported with rockplayer. Lets hope that in some future release it would be better. I didn't make any changes into config file maybe if I applied some filters, the result would be different.

Did you use a usb disk to play the clips from or did you try from a UPnP server? I am asking because I haven't been able to play any mkv from wifi connection with clips on my nas as the toshiba player always crashes

It's not possible to play mkv-files with the Toshiba Mediaplayer.
The clips I played are either in MOV or MP4-format.

I haven't managed to get any player to play HD x264 mkv's properly. Mostly they don't even start or are just really choppy. Some have options for HW/SW decoding, but still nothing.
Tested so far (latest versions): Vitalplayer, Vplayer, Yxplayer, Rockplayer, Act1 player, Default gallery, ES file manager movie player.
Any suggestions? Running Foliomod 1.3d

No not at the moment, but there are a few which in time could be intresting.
CorePlayer is one that I think will be able to play MKV, this due to the fact that they have their own codecs which are very effective and they use the hardware better. But its awfully quiet in the CoreCodec Forum.
They showed of their Android CorePlayer at CES in January.
Another one is the Video Player for the LG Optimus 2x which should support playing MKV in 1080p using the Tegra hardware. The problem here is to port the application to our Folio which has not been that successful. But this is something that could change over time.
More and more manufacturers are using the Tegra platform so I think it's just a matter of time before we se MKV support i several of them and perhaps they could be ported to our Folio.
As mentioned before you could use the MOV format and play video in 1080p without any problem using the Toshiba Media Player or the video player which comes with the Gallery.
But you would probably need to convert your video-files to the Mov format and that is one thing that I for one find a bit tedious.

Using FolioMod 1.4 and the Toshiba Media Player I can play MKV (720p, [email protected]) with almost the right speed. So there must be room for other improvements.
I really don't want to transcode every episode of all series.
Don't have any problems with quick rewrite to another container format (mp4, m4v), because this is fast and I need to get rid of AC3 in favor of ACC, otherwise no sound
I have tried the default video player but it cannot play .mkv movies with DTS sound track.
I can see the video part of the movie but so sound can be heard.
Is there a solution to this or do I have to convert my .mkv movies?
Edit: Actually DicePlayer and MX Player can play .mkv movies with DTS sound track.

use mx video player , it worked perfect when I played 1080p mkv /w dts video.
Dice Player does this too (and is a better player for the Tab 7.7 overall with better hardware decoding, not much in it though so pick whichever).

Just wondering what makes you think dice has better hardware decoding. I have not tried Dice yet but i have not run into a single problem with mx video player

On my Note and Galaxy Nexus some files don't play smoothly with mx player (they are very watchable, just not perfect like with Dice Player).
Glad to see you here NZ... Haven't try the video part thoroughly... Anyway, MX is still good for me as of now... Thanks for the input about Dice...

However, when the same videos are accessed over the network they are choppy if they play at all. Anyone else experiencing this? I've done some network analysis and the wifi isn't being maxed out or anything.

There is another thread "wifi connections" that documents some slow streaming prob.
I had to experiment with wifi-g to wifi-n (both 2.4 & 5.0 ghz) to get a steady stream.
No fixed answer at moment as all above settings still hv some intermittent stutter.
Try wifi-g and slowly move up speed.

What version Exactly?
MX Video Player v1.6f. You'll have to google for the apk as it's an old version that supported DTS software decoding prior to it being pulled.
yeah I tried them and they aren't supported on jellybean so I got diceplayer and used the special codec file and I can playback my 15GB .mkv's with DTS with no problem even running the cpu at 300mhz on my note 2 it plays back flawlessly on my 64gb ntfs microsd card. So it's DicePlayer that does it for JellyBean.

I did a quick search for XBMC in the market/play store, but couldn't find the video player - got a link to it by chance, please? I'd love to try the sliders.

Unless they've improved bt with video in the last three years, you cannot use bt headphones when watching videos. It introduces a delay with audio. This isn't noticeable when simply listening to music as there is nothing to look at. Same with voice calls.
I was super bummed years ago when I bought quality bt headphones and found this it. Regular wireless headphones have so much static.

Thanks for that: just tried it, and it is fiddly, that's for sure.
I also found that although you can almost get audio in sync, in XBMC, it seems to drift, so the more you play, the further out of sync it goes - I guess this will be fixed in a future release.

Well I'm not sure, it seems watchable on my HTC Desire with MX player when I tried it just now, the audio delay on that is roughly 0.2 secs - you can't notice it unless you tried to.
Even a generic search on Google such as "bluetooth audio delay" brings up a few results, mostly to the Asus transformer. And funnily enough the Nexus 7 is an Asus device so I'm wondering if there's a relation in the BT hardware used. Not good.

Works GREAT for me. I encode the video (x264 video & AAC audio) myself with Handbrake and use the STOCK video player. No issues.

xvid is a thing of the past and scene release no longer supported.
Stock player SD xvid .avi does not play

So if you want to play xvid bluetooth Dice does the job.

That matches my experience 100%, I have to use Dice Player too for SD content.
Yeah I should move on from xvid but still got a lot of older content to get through first!

Windows. It's quite possible I did something wrong. I'm also using an Asus Infinity, and your settings were tested on Nexus 7, weren't they?
I'm new (as in, yesterday) to Handbrake, but it looks like you can export/import profiles - perhaps you could export your profile and I could try that? Would be good to have something which others can import and use to get around this problem. I'm still hoping Jelly Bean might somehow miraculously fix this bug.

My guess, without more information on your specific mkv file, is that the mkv file you are trying to play has a audio track with DTS,DTS-HD,DolbyTrueHD, or something along those lines which I'd assume the note is incapable of decoding. If your mkv had a stereo audio (mp3...ect) track my guess is you wouldn't have an issue.
Have you tried VLC or the other video players from the play store? A number of them come with their own codecs built-in. I have not come across an MKV file that I haven't Ben able to play.

I'm not sure about the DTS, DTS-HD, DolbyTrueHD audio thing. I'm just a plug and play person. Now that you've enlightened me with all these complicated audio jargons I will have to do some research on it so I can better understand the cause of my mkv audio problem. As much as possible, I would really love to use all the default apps on my note3. If it turns out that the problem lies within the default video player then I have to search for other media player to play my mkv videos. Thanks for your prompt reply, I really appreciate it.:good:

if u have MXPlayer installed already, play the video, press menu button, Tools -> Properties, tick the more button, and scroll until the Stream where type is Audio, and see what type of codec it is. It's like many have said here, chances are, it's DTS, or something that Note 3 does not have any codec, and we cant help u unless you can confirm that
I think unlike some other video players, default video players have only as many codec as the OS natively support, so maybe just try opting 3rd party video players with software audio decode capability for higher compatibility. I think some one-time configuration should be worth the effort since you're a plug and play guy

Thanks BBXiong for your help. :good: As per your suggestion, I downloaded MX player. At first launch the mkv video still played without sound, what I did was to press the back button, go to settings -> decoder. I checked all the Hardware decoder box (there are 6 of them), also I checked all the Software decoder box (there are 3 of them). Then I go back to play the mkv video, this time the audio is working! I'm posting all the pertinent datas found in the Stream #2 which hopefully will help you figure out my problem:
Type : Audio
Codec: ATSC A/52A (AC-3)
Sample rate: 48000 Hz
Channels: 5.1 Channel
Bit rate: 384.0 kbits/sec
Stock vidéo player used to décode AC-3 on galaxy note 1.
I do not know what they did for Gn3 but they need to change it!
Just like in PC.. VLC media player.. Plays everything straight away w/o patches or need for other codecs.. And it's free

Try to install a video player app on your Galaxy Note 3. If it still didn't work, you can find a video converter program like Brorsoft's Video Converter to convert MKV to Galaxy Note 3 most compatible H.264 .mp4 video.
As titled, the video player on my note 3 doesnt play some video files properly. It just plays the sound of the file but doesnt show the video.
This is weird because these files played fine on my note 2 previously.

Note 3 supports *MP4, AVI, MKV, 3GP, WMV and FLV format. Check you video file format. Alternatively try mx player

My videos are of the avi format. Some can be played without problems. Most only plays the sound.

there are sometimes some of the avi. Format that are not proper try to download some low size video.avi then play it if it's work there is nothing wrong with the app but with the video if it doesn't then let us now and I'll gonna post the stock svideo apk and then try to reinstall it
Use MX player, and the arm 7 neon codec. Best media player i have used on android. It has played anything ive thrown at it for years now.

The new versions of MX player dont need the codecs.
Simply install.
Go to Settings > Decoder > enable HW+
Even without enabling its one of the best apps ul find for video playback
It has gestures, as well as keeping track of the position you stopped at

Or just use VLC or Dice Player, those play everything.
MX doesn't play certain audio codecs because of copyright issues.

And yet it plays a heap of videos with sound in software decoding that other players won't...
I tend to use 3 players for allround coverage. I've only ever found 1 or 2 things that don't play and that was because of encoding errors...

Yes, same here. I have VLC, Dice, MX and Archos installed. Mostly I use DICE because of the 400% volume boost and the fact I have yet to find a file it can't play. (And I download, so.. loads of different formats.) VLC secondary, MX is usually my 'If it really doesn't work, might as well try it' one, as it usually crashes on the files the others can't play.
VLC plays literally everything.
Worst videoplayer ever is Stock... I've seen Windows Media Player do a better job...
It seems that there is no correct video codec on your devices to afford AVI videos. Have a try to encode AVI into MP4 format.
