[Q] MKV Playback

Removing a bunch of preloaded bloatware, I also tossed the My Files app and have been searching for a way to get MKV play back to work. I'm noticing RockPlayer has a way to force System Player, which I would assume is the phones default video player.
I've loaded 3 videos onto my phone, all of which have subtitles. One is a 480p with subtitles, plays fine perfect frame rate, etc. however there are no displayed subtitles. Rockplayer does have subtitles enabled.
Second video is a 720p with subtitles. Video plays fine and smooth, no subtitles displaying.
Third video is also 720p with subtitles and those are working. However, the MKV uses codecs for variable frame rate, which make the video lag terribly in certain parts. Playing this file directly through RockPlayer causes a ton of artifacting and lag about four times more than I am experiencing with the stock player.
Does anyone know how to fix these subtitle problems, or know if there is an additional or better way to load the videos than using RockPlayer?
Edit: And on that note, is there a way/app that will allow choosing specific audio track for a video, or will it always be stuck on the default for the file?

Couple things. The default media player on the epic has ZERO options. You can not configure it as far as I know. However, it plays 720p\1080p MKV files flawlessly. I usually navigate to my video files with a file explorer and open them with the default video player. If subtitles don't work out of the box, then you're pretty much screwed. I'm willing to bet the movie player on the other SGS phones have more options.
Rock player is a piece of doodoo. While it can play MKV files, it chokes on anything remotely high definition. Video playback is all kinds of terrible. Doesn't seem to be able to make use of the Epic's graphics processing.
Until Sammy gives us a video player with more options, I think you're out of luck with subtitles

Just a suggestion but hardcode the subs to the video file.

You can try rock player, but it's really choppy with high quality movies. I think it supports subtitles. You can try it. It's free on the market.

For some reason, I can't get any of my 1080p mkvs to work. Do they need to be encoded in any particular way?

my problem is that the stock video player wont play any mp4 or mkv vids with more than 2 channels of audio. almost everything i have is 6 channel and wont play on the stock player. as stated above, i find rock player also to be boo boo at hi def playback. i can use headphones and get 5.1 audio, but not through the device speakers. any help?

"5.1" is simulated using a filter, but that method requires headphones to work, so that it can control exactly what each ear hears.

Hey..if you guys haven't noticed mvideoplayer added MKV internal subtitle support for SGS phones..and from what I hear it uses the default hardware acceleration rather then software like rockplayer
austin thats another video player for you to try lol..if not I suggest taking it to the i9000 forum as for now all the development has been there and they had the phones longer.

Oh thank you for pointing this out! I just tested a few 720p MKV files and they played great! Not only that, but it was made by the same person who crated act1 video player. It remembers the position of every video you start and stop. I love it

I was hardcoding subs until I foudn mvideoplayer a couple of days ago. works fine on 80% of external subtitle formats, even allows positioning and font control. it is great.
no more hardcoding subs or worrying about demuxing and increasing audio gain for me!

Cool, thanks for the recommendation. RockPlayer couldn't do HD, so I was looking for another player that was actually hardware accelerated.

I loaded up an MKV TV show with 720p h.264 and 6 channel AC-3 and it worked flawlessly. I tried playing a 1080p mp4 file with 6 channel AC-3 and couldn't open it. I'm going to try a 1080p mp4 with 6 channel AAC.
If that doesn't work then I'll be pretty disappointed but not by much. I know the S5PC110 supports 1080p recording and playback. It's likely Samsung lowered the DSP clock to save power.

The only point in trying to put on a 1080p movie is if that is the format you already have. If you're ripping your own movies, you should probably rip them to the resolution of the phone. Anything higher than 480p is overkill. 1080p is double the resolution of the phone. Have you tried a 1080p MKV?
For some reason when i try to copy over a 1080p movie that is 6GB, it says the file is too large for the destination device's file system... even though I have about 11GB free.

Thats normal..you have to break it up into either 2gb pieces or 4gb pieces (don't remember off the top of my head)...and it will work...this is actually where Kies I hear is good for..it automatically breaks up the video file for you if you use it. (unfortunately due to TW3 being missing we can't use Kies)

The limit is 4GB and this is due to the FAT32 file system. If android could read exFAT or NTFS there wouldn't be that limitation.

The only 1080p MKVs I have are over 4GB. Even if the phone could play 1080p MKVs, it can't play the DTS audio in the movies I have.
I usually get m2ts contained movies with AC-3 audio that stream perfectly to my Xbox 360 and also work locally on PS3s.

I know that the tab is divx certified but, i would like to know if it is possible to play divx in the browser? On sites like stagevu, loombo and vidxden.

i am not able to play divx videos from web.... its showing the plugin symbol

That all said, my Tab is loving XviD dvd rips

I mainly want the Tab for Xvid DVD rips. Do you know if the Tab plays avi's that our encoded with an AC3 soundtrack rather than MP3. a lot of dvd rips have Ac3 rather than MP3 and I heard that the galaxy cannot support multichannel soundtracks.

It has played all files I have tried until now. avis' in a lot of formats, divx. h.264 all new series. It even does mkv files in 720p with no problems or lag at all

ac3 is supported. But the stock player has decoding problems. Try vPlayer alpha - its the best atm.

so with vplayer alpha does it play 720p mkv files with AC3 (a52 codec) soundtrack, dont want to convert everything to AAC 2 channel or MP3.
Any word on firmware upgrades to fix stock video player???

None yet... but youre right, the stock player is very good otherwise! I love the browser and media library. And of course the ar control.

so can someone confirm does it play perfectly with another video player instead of the stock one.
As I said really interested in playback of 720p mkv with AC3 (5.1 sound)
Gonna try it when they are for sale next week, take my sd card and see if it works

Yep works fine in vplayer. But remember, no files larger than 4gb on internal storage.
Also, the 1080p playback advertised for the galaxy tab refers to divx and xvid I believe, so high profile move are square in third party player laps. Lets hope they make fixes too!

I'm a bit disappointed with the mplayer. I have several clips which I could play with the Toshiba Mediaplayer and these did not work very well in the mplayer.
I should mention that the clips were 720p and 1080p, but when played with the Toshiba Mediaplayer (which use hardware acceleration) the Folio plays them without breaking any sweat.
I think we have to wait for a video player that use the Tegra 2 hardware instead of using the CPU to decode mkv.

Yes, I did some testing myself and I was disappointed with the quality. Normal SD AVIs from web were pixelized. There was no antialias or smoothing. The pixels of video were just magnified.
Rockplayer with HW support produced much better output.
Maybe for some formats not supported with rockplayer. Lets hope that in some future release it would be better. I didn't make any changes into config file maybe if I applied some filters, the result would be different.

Did you use a usb disk to play the clips from or did you try from a UPnP server? I am asking because I haven't been able to play any mkv from wifi connection with clips on my nas as the toshiba player always crashes

It's not possible to play mkv-files with the Toshiba Mediaplayer.
The clips I played are either in MOV or MP4-format.

Rockplayer read all formats. You choise hard or soft decoding.

I haven't managed to get any player to play HD x264 mkv's properly. Mostly they don't even start or are just really choppy. Some have options for HW/SW decoding, but still nothing.
Tested so far (latest versions): Vitalplayer, Vplayer, Yxplayer, Rockplayer, Act1 player, Default gallery, ES file manager movie player.
Any suggestions? Running Foliomod 1.3d

No not at the moment, but there are a few which in time could be intresting.
CorePlayer is one that I think will be able to play MKV, this due to the fact that they have their own codecs which are very effective and they use the hardware better. But its awfully quiet in the CoreCodec Forum.
They showed of their Android CorePlayer at CES in January.
Another one is the Video Player for the LG Optimus 2x which should support playing MKV in 1080p using the Tegra hardware. The problem here is to port the application to our Folio which has not been that successful. But this is something that could change over time.
More and more manufacturers are using the Tegra platform so I think it's just a matter of time before we se MKV support i several of them and perhaps they could be ported to our Folio.
As mentioned before you could use the MOV format and play video in 1080p without any problem using the Toshiba Media Player or the video player which comes with the Gallery.
But you would probably need to convert your video-files to the Mov format and that is one thing that I for one find a bit tedious.

Yeah, that's not an option =) I'll just wait or sell the Folio for another Tegra 2 device probably. Thanks!

Using FolioMod 1.4 and the Toshiba Media Player I can play MKV (720p, [email protected]) with almost the right speed. So there must be room for other improvements.
I really don't want to transcode every episode of all series.
Don't have any problems with quick rewrite to another container format (mp4, m4v), because this is fast and I need to get rid of AC3 in favor of ACC, otherwise no sound

[Q] No sound when playing BluRay.X264

When I play 720p.BluRay.X264 mkv file on my Galaxy S2 there is no sound. I tried the integrated player, mVideoPlayer and MoboPlayer. The sound track on MoboPlayer is shown as 1:6CH, 48000Hz. Do I need any audio codec to play the video with sound or there is nothing I can do to whatch theese files on my new Galaxy S2? Thanks for your answers in advance.

there is a test done before for mkv files playback..

Unfortunately it is a trial version and not free. Do you know free player that will play the audio?

Check if it has DTS audio, the S2 has some trouble playing DTS audio. You should probably convert the audio to AAC or get video files that don't use DTS.

Yep, its probably DTS audio, in which case Diceplayer is what you need. Its well worth the price I think.

Most likely the audio-stream is encoded with DTS, which isn´t supported by the Galaxy S II.
It can play AAC, MP3 or AC3.
Do I need any audio codec to play the video with sound or there is nothing I can do to whatch theese files on my new Galaxy S2? Thanks for your answers in advance.

You can´t install any media-codecs on Android, like you can do it in Windows.
Obviously mediaplayers can bring their own decoders, but this means decoding on the CPU, which is slow and eats much more battery-power.
So it is best to encode the audio-stream in one of the supported formats

You mean video and audio is not synchronous?
That´s because, it plays video and audio separately. Basically the Player uses the media-framework to play the video without sound, so it can use the DSP.
Then it plays the sound separately, using a built in software-decoder.
This most likely also means reading the file twice, although some caching maybe prevents the need to actually read it twice from the permanent storage.
So it is a quite inefficient way to play the video. The player doesn´t know the internal timings of the media-framework, so it doesn´t really know when to play the audio. But most players should allow to set a custom audio-delay.
It is also possible that there simply isn´t enough CPU-power left to do the decoding in software.

could you post your movie file info? and what is the diceplayer's version?
There are some known problems to play HD MKVs.
1. 24bit Flac Audio is not supported
2. microsd card class ( transfer rate ) issue.
3. Wrong MKV time stamp issue.

i think that lag is not sync problem.

Playing 720p mkv

I was having quite a few problems playing HD mkv files, tried multiple players. The only player I found that played them well was BS player. Thought I would spread the word, I was rather annoyed that i was going to have to transcode a bunch of movies to play on this tablet but then i tried BS player and was incredibly surprised. Not sure if the pro version is worth the money, im hoping VLC will eventually be able to handle it.
EDIT: With software decoding MX player was able to play them as well. I tried DICE player as well and it also seems to work. For awhile I was having issues with those other 2 players but they seem to work fine now. It still depends a lot on other encoding settings but all these players seem to work fine with 720p mkv.

Vplayer is good also...

all these players can't play videos properly ......I would recommend u to convert video into mp4 or avi using formatfactory for PC .....once converted copy to ur tab and play using mx player or v player or stock ...........the resolution and bitrate adjustments make videos look lot smoother and plays without any hookups ......

I have no problem with stock player and 720p mkv files as long as you don't use High Profile H.264 encoding. The file size will be a little bigger (than High Profile encodings) but that's about it.
