Finally,OTA update for wildfire :) - Wildfire General

Our hard work is finally worth it. To day I e-mail to HTC about OTA update for wildfire to unlock bootloader, and this is their reply:
"Dear Nhan,
Thank you for contacting HTC.
With reference to your query, we are pleased to announce that we have heard everyone’s comments and constructive suggestions and have decided to go forward with this initiative.
However, we currently don’t have a schedule yet, but stay tuned; we will let you know via through our official website and official social media outlets.
We currently don’t have information regarding which phones will be unlocked. Please keep an eye on our official website and official social media outlets for announcements about which phones will be bootloader unlocked.
HTC
Sincerely,"
That means there will be OTA update for some existing locked phones, but ("We currently don’t have information regarding which phones will be unlocked"). However , It's a good new ,right? And wildfire is also one of their big budgets , so I think later or soon, there will be a OTA updates for wildfire to unlock bootloader.
Of course that's just my thought
Sorry for my thread's title, I can't change it in the "edit post"

This Threat sounds like "there is allready an update"...
but there is NO UPDATE!
Choose a correct Threat name next time...
Oh and "yeah nice, we all can clearly see that the Wildfire is getting an OTA Update to be unlocked... we all can clearly read it in the mail that you got from HTC".

No more useful than the Facebook post they issued!

Well, that sounds like atleast some current phones will be unlocked. That means firstly the already released phones like sensation, desire s ... will be unlocked. That sounds to me that wildfire (if they wish to) takes a long time to get unlocked. Maybe 6months or an year. Because they have to increase the sales of their current devices which is done in 2 ways -----1) unlocking the newer devices faster. 2) keeping the older devices locked so that some older customers choose the newer devices.
Well, if they choose to unlock wildfire then i think it will be the last phone to get unlocked. Because it is the first phone that is hardly locked. Not to disappoint u guys, but just telling the facts.

Yes, and we need to boost up the progress by email them, held a campaign, begging them... what ever it takes

Yesterday I mailed HTC to ask whether or not the Wildfire will be unlocked as well. This is the answer I received:
"We currently don't have specific information which phones
will be unlocked, but it's a distinct possibility."

Yes. It's needed I think.
Everyone became calm with the statement by HTC. I don't know how many are presently expecting them to unlock wildfire. I expected that the groubal will continue till devices are unlocked. But the groubal is static now. The signs are not at all moving.
It would have been nice if HTC atleast gave an official statement that they will atleast unlock the present unrootable devices.

i bet htc could have launched the ota update in that day, right after they announced they would unlock the bootloaders, they don't have hundreds of different devices, i believe less then 20 are with locked bootloaders..
and in the end, if it will be a ota update, we will see it in a few months, that's just business

Lets Ask HTC for NexusOne SPL on Incredible

Hello everybidy as Froyo is just gona Release it will take ages for HTC to upgrade our Incredible and also we are missing on rooted OS.

You mean like the disclaimers in every custom rom thread, where people still manage to brick their phones, and then talk about taking them back to the store for a new one?
HTC doesn't even release legally-obligated kernel sources on time half the time, if you think they're going to go an extra step beyond that you're dreaming.

I believe they're talking about the disclaimer that you get when you unlock a nexus one. HTC will refuse to warranty most nexus ones if the bootloader is unlocked.... and thats the risk im willing to take
But you have to remember that Verizon will get say in that as well and they do not like people messing with their stuff. It's a long shot....

Actually, I already have the cdma nexus one hboot. But it's useless to us until we can flash to start. The version is pretty far from the HTC one as well so it's useless in our attempts. Stay patient.
Not to be a total retard, but is Froyo just a codename for Flash integration, or is it like an entire OS upgrade for the Android? Why would you say it would be ages until the HTC Incredible gets updated?
Sorry if that's a dumb question.

It's an entire upgrade for andriod, well from 2.1 to 2.2, but some good changes. HTC has to go through a ton of testing phases before releasing an upgrade so it usually takes them awhile and no question is a dumb question
I work for the mobile industry and have worked for the computer industry for years, and have never been one to believe the talk about obsolete devices soon after you buy them. It angers me that this incredible is my first Android and I can't root it like my friends who have the Droid and Nexus One, Dream, etc.
I'm almost tempted to take it back and get a diff android, but this damn phone is so cool.

Root will happen. As is, this phone is far from obsolete. 2.2 still needs to be released on an actual device before its mature enough for daily use. Trust me, I went to 2.1 way too early on my last device and it sucked. Then 2.1 devices came out and all of the sudden it was good enough for daily use.

I agree. Not only does it enable things VZW disabled intentionally but it increases the chances for issues that can lead to unsatified customers and returns.
HTC probably wouldn't want to go against their customer who is VZW not us. We buy from VZW not HTC.
We just have to trust in our developer community and hope they are able to accomplish root in the near future. I believe every HTC Android device has been rooted in the past so why would the Incredible be any different.
I remember reading an artible about how the G1 would never be able to be upgraded to 1.6 and devs got that phone running 2.1 so I am hopeful

[q] ridiculous

How come the dev's haven't released any information about if they are going to root the 2.2 froyo or not? now before any douche bag comes out with the same response all douche bags have(why don't you make it yourself if your so mad) i am knocking the fact that the devs haven't released a root yet im knocking the fact that they haven't said if they are even doing one, and if you go to the unrevoked beta irc(#unrevokedtest) and ask about the wildfire with regards to a new root they act if you just ask for a baby to sacrifice. Most of us just wanna know so that if in fact the unrevoked project for the new wildfire hboot is not happening we can go and get a new phone or try to find someone with a xclip(i don't know anyone that has one in Australia so im screwed)
Point of this thread apart from your rant? Since you very well know everything there is to it, was it really necessary to have one more rant post?

........................................................................ of course there is a reason read, read and then re-read and you will find that i am asking if the froyo 2.2 root is a go or no go
Just my 2 cents: getting a patched phone is no right, it's a privilege.
It is entirely up to the people of unrevoked to give information or not.
They are not obliged to do that.
So just wait and see.
If they release anything, be happy, if not, look somewere else.
They are doing a great job, and I have deep respect for them, investing many hours of hard work for the (inpatient) masses.

I think indeed that the reason why we have a huge number of unhappy users that post about the issue every day is that there is not a lot of communication from anyone involved in the developing process of rooting the device... Anyway I'm mainly disappointed by the HTC behaviour: what is the point in changing the hboot in an old device that you will not upgrade anymore? Make us buy a new device? I'm thinking of changing the brand of my android instead... Shame of you HTC...
I'm fairly new here, and the sense of entitlement is amazing. I'm new to android development, but this constant noise about this is driving me crazy.
I just bought a wildfire but before I purchased it, I did some research first. In Australia thankfully telstra hasn't done an over the air update so I knew that I could root the device.
On this forum there are many warnings about not applying the over the air update.
My advice is that the more noise that everyone is making about rooting the wildfire with the newer version of hboot, is more likely to make the developers ignore the wildfire as a platform.
Another option is that you could try and root the platform yourself. I know I'm looking at it, as I want s-off.
Take care,
Ivy.

Of course, your anger is justified. But, apparently, since there is no dev from Unrevoked here, and, in the case there is no update from Unrevoked as is the case now, what can you and I do about it? No More Rooting Our Little Friend...

Just a FYI, I was on the phone with one of my friend HTC engineers, long distance from outside the USA, which he gave me some good gossip about the G2.
*Take it for what is worth. I do admit this my not be new info to some.
1) There is a OTA update coming for the G2 which will DEFINITELY cause you to loose root, and A LOT OF WORK has gone into the update to prevent rooting. Matter of fact, my HTC friend tells me that the encryption algorithm will almost make it impossible to root. My opinion, nothing is impossible!
2) BTW, there IS MAJOR development in up coming new tech with 3D displays. My little 'rumor mill' friend informed me that he seen a Android live wallpaper in 3D fire that looks so realistic that when you tilt the device forward, the icons actually go through the flames.
3) He told me that when the G2 was originally released, it was purposely done to make it hard to root, and now with the Gingerbread OTA update just around the corner (he said it may happen in July) by the time IF anyone figures out how to root it, the phone will be completely outdated.

I dunno, but its true that bootloaders and rooting are 2 separate things anyway. He's referencing rooting this latest stock GB rom, not unlocking bootloaders.
*edit-
It seems there is an 'official' leaked rom out there that is digitally signed by HTC and also T-Morgul (misspending is applied) that after flashed, perm-root has not yet been achieved. Now the great devs that stripped the GB rom (from the raw, has rooted it), so you can flash a rooted version, but hasn't yet rooted after flash.

hard to believe.
I find when people are lying they add useless information like "a long distance phone call" and "out of usa."
Were this true imd expect somthing like "i was talking to a buddy of mine that works for htc. He heard they had some new encyption that will take forever to root!"

I would say he is lying, but after spending some time in the irc its not looking so good. They even blocked the fail safe goldcard method for downgrading. I think this is bad news being one of the first to receive a 2.3 device back from them I have tried everything to help get this thing rooted hope there is a way to root it soon before all the devs leave for newer devices.

Hi !
We gonna see about that!
But just to put some things straight:
- The goldcard to downgrade method also needed temp-root to change the main version in the misc-partition.
- At the moment we do not have a working temp-rooting method for gingerbread (besides gingerbreak but this has been patched in our version)
- We are not working on a new temp-root very urgent but this will change
Comes time, comes root.
Have fun - Guhl

Even those running a custom rom?
well if you think about it, if GB update from htc has been in development for the past 6 months (with specific configurations for different phones). and during this development phase they're stance was to still lock rooting and bootloaders. it would be near impossible to get a release June/July with a different development path based on the statement by the CEO.
either they will push back the OTA update, or roll out and meet the deadlines with their current path and with other phones already getting updates the past few months. I would say they're rolling it out with just configuration testing and QA on our phones
Why not just do this...sell rooted devices and locked devices. Or just sell all devices rooted. Lets face it most people now with android phones have no clue what the os is capable of and buy it off of hype.

Honesty so few people know or care about updates have like 3 friends with droids that didn't know their sensations had upgrades waiting. So obviously we are the vast minority. Also who on xda doesn't have an unlocked bootloader. I'm sure we'll have fruitcakes soon after the us launch

About three months ago I purchased Samsung Galaxy Note for its screen size mainly. Getting to that age it hurts looking at small screen for a long period of time. Unfortunately, I have been left without my Samsung Galaxy Note for a month because of the mess and very poor service I have received from my network provider. On the happy note, I'm collecting a brand new one today. So I have been using my Atrix heavily again in the past month.
I have now owned my Atrix for over a year now and I can say I have never been happy with the software side of Atrix. When I started using Samsung Note I even more realised how badly Atrix's ROM was cooked. I own the international version of Atrix and Motorola never released any updates after the GB firmware upgrade in the UK. I'm extremely furious I had to put up with Motorola's shortcomings and ignorance towards its international users.
I cannot simply throw away my Atrix as I still need the phone as Samsung Galaxy Note is too big to carry in my pocket. I rather carry Atrix in my pocket than Note but I prefer using Note for everything else and Note is a pleasure to use for both reading and writing. I love it.
I have never unlocked the bootloader for the warranty reason first and then I don't believe custom ROMs are that better when it comes to the reliability. What deeply bothers me is that Motorola will not allow I unlock the bootloader legally/officially even after my two year european warranty is over. Take my word for it I would unlock the BL after the warranty is over should I need to and wouldn't give a monkey to Google/Motorola about it.
Atrix would still be a good backup phone even for the entire 2013 so I am wishing Motorola would finally do the right/honorable thing by releasing a solid ROM, be it ICS or JB. There is a significant difference between GB and ICS when it comes to user-experience and that is why Atrix will shine with it.
As it stands, I would never give my money to the Motorola again even if they had the best phones on the market. Making promises to the new customers when you have not shown loyalty to your old customers only shows your business hasn't been changed. I would have believed Motorola when they gave international users a solid quarter release date for older devices when on stage trying to sell new handsets. What Motorola did to international Atrix users and other devices is not something I would forget that easily. I will always be there to tell my experience about you, Motorola.

All those people that had the latest official update installed which came with an unlockable bootloader.
Google owns Motorola but they are not getting any special treatment. They have to wait lie any other manufacturer.
Motorola unveils 3 new Razr phones : http://usat.ly/RLZI8u
Read towards the bottom.
"Woodside says Motorola is not getting favorable treatment from Google though it's now part of the Google family. "Motorola is treated the way every other (manufacturer) is treated," he said during an interview. The company receives the Android software code the same day that rival handset makers get it. And Google doesn't get any special exposure to Motorola engineers."
That being said, this thread's question is answered.

Unlockable = can be unlocked and unsigned firmware installed.
Locked = can NOT be unlocked, you can ONLY install official signed firmware from Motorola.

However, we cannot confirm if the device will have S-Off, as we do not have any detailed information about the device yet. Please keep an eye on HTC.com for updates and announcements about this device. You can also check back with us periodically to see if we have any additional information for you. We are just an email away for more support. In the meantime, I hope you have a great day, Balint!

this kind of thing makes me wonder what it's like working at a place like HTC. are they really as disjointed as they appear to be?

Most big companies are.
If HTC makes Dev edition S-OFF, they will wipe all sins they have done over last 2 years in my eyes
I tweeted htc dev and they said no -off.

Just got a follow up email from a supervisor, he says the employee was wrong, the device does not have s-off. Apparently he had the developer edition in his hands, when he wrote that.

It's such bull that they market it as "dev" and leave s-on.

I couldn't agree with you more..
so what is the point of purchasing the "developer edition?" other than it being a 64GB device? this is totally effed...
You also get unbranded firmware and update quicker.
It is not designed for developing roms, it is designed for developing programs. Rooting and installing custom roms invalidates the warranty on any HTC one, including the dev edition.

Before I get my head ripped off asking what appears to be a silly question, what is S-off? I gather by your reactions the HTC One I bought on pre-order at the HTC.com website has a security feature that by default is turned on and not off? So what there is another layer of security that must be unlocked to flash custom ROMs? I'm putting my wife into this device given her line of work...medical migrating from Windows Phone 7.8 so forgive me if I am not entirely up to speed on all things Android. Thanks!

It is not required to flash custom roms. It is required to change certain items in the phone such as the country code. It is turned on by default until someone figures out how to hack the phone.

Most people don't need S-Off, it allows you to brick your device, and more importantly to relock it so that HTC don't know you've put custom ROMs on it for warranty purposes.
On the One X it would have been useful to flash updated firmware so that JB ROMs could be installed on carrier phones before the carriers bothered to get round to validating the update, but that's a fairly rare scenario.
It also allows you to flash different radios, but again, it's pretty rare that's required.
So yeah, other than those rare scenarios and AT&T phones who prevent the phone from being bootloader unlocked via htcdev.com, it's not needed if you just want to flash custom ROMs or lie to HTC.
I don't think flashing radios is a rare scenario... I've done it a dozen times on my One XL.
I want s-off to see if we can flash a T-Mobile radio on dev edition to enable all T-Mobile bands.
