Hey Google, Why Can’t Motorola Put Out a Jelly Bean Phone When You OWN MOTOROLA? - Atrix 4G General

I just read an article on Gizmodo with same topic so wanted to share it with the community to answer the big question, Why don't Google do some thing good with Motorola and its old devices.

True and since they recently downsize 20% i think we should give them some time before they start to kick so ass. After all they are Mother [email protected]#$%^& Google.

Well, at least they are offering Jelly Bean/ $100 discount for those who own Motorola devices launched in 2011 and later.. That's a start, yeah?

Honesty so few people know or care about updates have like 3 friends with droids that didn't know their sensations had upgrades waiting. So obviously we are the vast minority. Also who on xda doesn't have an unlocked bootloader. I'm sure we'll have fruitcakes soon after the us launch

About three months ago I purchased Samsung Galaxy Note for its screen size mainly. Getting to that age it hurts looking at small screen for a long period of time. Unfortunately, I have been left without my Samsung Galaxy Note for a month because of the mess and very poor service I have received from my network provider. On the happy note, I'm collecting a brand new one today. So I have been using my Atrix heavily again in the past month.
I have now owned my Atrix for over a year now and I can say I have never been happy with the software side of Atrix. When I started using Samsung Note I even more realised how badly Atrix's ROM was cooked. I own the international version of Atrix and Motorola never released any updates after the GB firmware upgrade in the UK. I'm extremely furious I had to put up with Motorola's shortcomings and ignorance towards its international users.
I cannot simply throw away my Atrix as I still need the phone as Samsung Galaxy Note is too big to carry in my pocket. I rather carry Atrix in my pocket than Note but I prefer using Note for everything else and Note is a pleasure to use for both reading and writing. I love it.
I have never unlocked the bootloader for the warranty reason first and then I don't believe custom ROMs are that better when it comes to the reliability. What deeply bothers me is that Motorola will not allow I unlock the bootloader legally/officially even after my two year european warranty is over. Take my word for it I would unlock the BL after the warranty is over should I need to and wouldn't give a monkey to Google/Motorola about it.
Atrix would still be a good backup phone even for the entire 2013 so I am wishing Motorola would finally do the right/honorable thing by releasing a solid ROM, be it ICS or JB. There is a significant difference between GB and ICS when it comes to user-experience and that is why Atrix will shine with it.
As it stands, I would never give my money to the Motorola again even if they had the best phones on the market. Making promises to the new customers when you have not shown loyalty to your old customers only shows your business hasn't been changed. I would have believed Motorola when they gave international users a solid quarter release date for older devices when on stage trying to sell new handsets. What Motorola did to international Atrix users and other devices is not something I would forget that easily. I will always be there to tell my experience about you, Motorola.

All those people that had the latest official update installed which came with an unlockable bootloader.

Google owns Motorola but they are not getting any special treatment. They have to wait lie any other manufacturer.
Motorola unveils 3 new Razr phones : http://usat.ly/RLZI8u
Read towards the bottom.
"Woodside says Motorola is not getting favorable treatment from Google though it's now part of the Google family. "Motorola is treated the way every other (manufacturer) is treated," he said during an interview. The company receives the Android software code the same day that rival handset makers get it. And Google doesn't get any special exposure to Motorola engineers."
That being said, this thread's question is answered.

No! They got a LOCKED bootloader.
Unlockable = can be unlocked and unsigned firmware installed.
Locked = can NOT be unlocked, you can ONLY install official signed firmware from Motorola.
Even if English is your second language, this is basic grammar.

How to pressure bootloader unlock or unlock tool release

We need to put some heat under the atrix development to have the bootloader unlocked or a tool to unlock it ........ in more then one conversation they have stated then retracted the statement saying " if you want custom ROMS buy a nexus " what could we do as a community to fuel the realease of an unlocked bootloder or a unlock tool ........ as functional as the phone may be out of the box it always has much more potential then a factory standard ROM

I don't think we'll really have much luck with that. I think the best route to go is to probably show what Microsoft has done (though I"m sure Moto is well aware): embrace the developers and work with them. Microsoft is learning from the developers, and vice versa. As much as I hate to say it, WinMo suddenly has a lot of potential. I don't see myself switching, as I hate the new version. It's something I'd expect to see in the mid 90s lol.

Are you an idiot? "Put some heat under the Atrix development"...wtf?
The easiest way is to pay someone. Until then and im sure you are just looking for hand-outs and free-bees, you can wait. Or better yet, take the devs comment seriously, buy a Nexus.
These people do this kind of stuff on their free time. Be a little more grateful for the devs that we have working on the stuff they they are working on instead of trying to "Put some heat under the Atrix development".

I took his comment to mean put some heat on Moto for an unlocked bootloader, or at least unlockable. I think the devs here at XDA are extremely talented, but I don't know enough about eFuse to know if they can even crack it.

I think AT$T will also have a say if the bootloader will be locked as well, and if they do. You know how that's gonna play out..
I hope Motorola/AT&T do not lock this one down. As long as this phone runs as fast as early reviews claim, the only two things I would like to see are Root, and the ability to side load apps.

That's all I'm hoping for.
all I'm hoping for is that I can use the Atrix with my T-Mobile sim
T-mobile in the USA uses 1700 MHz for their UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ service, while the Atrix supports 850 / 1900 / 2100 MHz. So it might work, but not for 3G/4G service.
Dont worry we will have an unlock tool soon :

What android phones on AT&T have a locked bootloader? The Captivate sure as hell doesn't. The aria doesn't either.
I don't see why AT&T would be 'the bad guy' in this case.
Hes saying the provider has a say in how the phone functions.
Just like how most providers block tethering unless you pay for it.
Hes suggesting that even if moto wanted an unlocked bootloader at&t could say "no we want a locked bootloader so people don't bypass our restrictions".

Moto is the only manufacturer to use something like eFuse on a bootloader. Look at the Moto phones with the eFuse...and none of them are offered on AT&T. While AT&T may have some kind of input on the matter, that point is moot, as the process is one that Moto created, for their own reasons and purposes, and has nothing to do with the carrier(s).
What phones besides Moto's have anything like eFuse? None. The only ones with eFuse are higher end Android phones, phones that AT&T hasn't carried.
Which high end android phones use Efuses? And what could possibly be the reason for wanting to lock a bootloader that bad? Doesn't Google require all scripts and coding ect to be released by phone makers ?

Motorola did say something about wanting to work with developers, so I'm hoping.. I'll sign an agreement, void my warranty etc..
Moto posted something about their xoom on facebook and at least half the people responding chimed in with something about wanting an unlocked bootloader, I'm not sure how much pressure motorola perceives from this, but I thought it was pretty good.
and unless a moto employee leaks the signing keys, I seriously doubt the bootloader will be unlocked, I doubt they messed up like sony did with the ps3.. unfortunately.

I Don't Believe On The Motorola Promise About That Unlockable Bootloader

hi,
guys, I don't want to dishearten you but did you think a minute about the way motorola will unlock your bootloader in the future update??
as they will release an update.zip like in the past, I'm not really sure if they will include the unlockable bootloader inside it and, not sure also if an android update can flash a bootloader. So I am a little anxious for you guys, mine is already unlocked...

I, maybe just optimistically, think they will. The backlash, *****ing, low sales, the fact they said they would, and the fact that we have it already all points, IMO, to them releasing it. Motorola exec. - "Well the kids already have it so lets release it and make us look good." If they are on our side, at least give us what we want, they sell more. DROID - ground breaking - unlockable - sold like hot cakes. ATRIX - ground breaking - locked - not so much

Does it really matter? For those that actually want an unlocked bootloader, they can get it in the dev forum. For the average user who will still get the OTA update, they probably didn't care about the bootloader to begin with.

I'm guess i'm still an 'average user' when it comes to android, but this is where I came to become a superuser (pun intended). I don't think i'm ready to mess with the HK build yet, but I definitely plan to flash a few ROMs when the official unlocked GB update comes through. And if it gets yanked before the final release, hopefully i'll know enough by then to use kenneth's version, or if worst comes to worst, the HK build.

It's not like the HKTW build is as unstable as the build TBH gave us. The only things that don't work is the front facing camera, and fingerprint sensor.
I just didn't restore from a backup, and you can fix the WebTop. So my phone is running fine, and it seems even more stable than FroYo (Besides the obvious bugs)

It really dose not matter if thay include the unlockable bootloader in every update or not. As long as their is a way for it to be done. Thats all the matters. Really only the N1 could be unlocked without much of any hassle. You just needed to know what commands to run,
Once its unlocked. Its unlocked. Cant go back. And just because you flash back to 1.57 or 1.83 and it no longer says "Unlocked" at the top. It is. All you need to do is flash the pudding and it will put those little words back.

When is the next firmware update to gingerbread 2.3. Let's try to stay on topic, and have fun.
1. It's kind of a loaded question. "about to start" and "a while" mean different things to different people. No lie, it's difficult to manage everyone's expectations. I don't want to set the wrong expectations. Mis-interpretation just leads to frustration and further pessimism. I don't want to promise something that I don't have the control over delivery. I wouldn't expect any soak sign-up, at minimum, for another week. Soon as we get closer to soak I'll invite everyone.
2. As mentioned before we are working on a Unlockable Bootloader solution for release later this year where our carrier partners will allow it. This isn't specific to any product or carrier. Further details will be released as they are known.

AT&T sells android phones that already have unlocked bootloaders and I do not see them having a reason to deny the update.
With that said pudding will give you unlocked bootloader, once applied, FOREVER! so it will not matter at this point if they allow it or not

They do? Which ones? Last I checked, all sorts of phones have locked bootloaders. It's just that Moto's the only one who actually does more than simply lock it.
If the soak test sign ups started in a week, you could look at soak testing starting a week later, and if past updates are anything to go by, an update another week later if all went well. That puts the GB update at in the last week of July.
On the locked bootloader, a lot of people said they will not unlock until they get the official update enabling this, so although many of us are already locked, many people are probably getting screwed. Might push them to just unlock now.

In a sense, yes. A question, and then my thoughts.
While the AT&T bootloader can be unlocked now, is it possible (not likely, just possible) from a technical standpoint, that Moto could release a GB update that would prevent pudding from working? Say GB is release next week. A month from now a guy buys an Atrix, pulls it out the box with GB. Could that GB update prevent him from unlocking the bootloader? I think it's possible this could happen.
Further, my thoughts are that there is concern for future Moto devices on AT&T. We have a reasonable solution now, for this phone. What about future Moto devices? I don't think AT&T would allow such an unlock.

Which phones on AT&T come with an unlocked bootloader? Or do you just mean that they sell phones that have bootloaders that can be unlocked? Big difference, IMO. HTC doesn't care if you unlock their bootloader. Moto says you need carrier permission. What makes you think AT&T would ever grant such permission?
As for the rest, see my questions in my previous post. I'm not sure on the technical aspects of it, but I can see this making a difference in future devices, and possibly future Atrixes that are sold...

My theory on this is that carriers were willing to subsidize manufacturers' bootloader lockdowns that ensured the carrier bloatware would remain installed and stuff like tethering could be mitigated. Perhaps AT&T paid Motorola more than other manufacturers, so it's a matter of arguing over money.

Unlocked, or unlockable? If they are unlocked out of the box... I don't know. Maybe if presented with a choice (what Moto is doing), they would say no. But they wouldn't push for it up front. Maybe?? I don't know.
I still think they are just unlockable, and not unlocked out of the box. HTC allows for an unlock solution (my guess is so does Samsung). Not sure on LG. Moto decides to ask carrier permission.
I still see no reason why AT&T would approve such a thing. We haven't had a carrier-sold Nexus, and I'm not holding out hope we will. Look at how AT&T has crippled Android before: no sideloading, limiting apps, etc. And now you think they'll play nice with everyone?? LOL
I respect you, and I respect your opinion. I politely disagree. I don't think AT&T is the most advanced-user-friendly carrier (or dev-friendly, but we're not all devs here). Moto is certainly not the most dev friendly with the efuse and locked bootloaders. Combine the two and it's a damn mess. Shame, because I really like this lapdock feature that Moto wants to do more of.

yeah man, same here just waiting for the custom ROM's to come.

Should I have waited for the dev version note 3?

I get that it will have an unlocked bootloader and such. But does the release of this mean no one will bother with unlocking the non dev version. Because id really like me a custom rom.

As of now beanz said that only safe strap will be worked on for the non dev edition . which means only custom tw Roms. No kernels, no aosp. No one mentioned the possibility of bootloader unlock, as he mentioned time after time to wait for Dev edition.
Hope that answers your question
I could not wait for a phone that I all ready like... but that being said I wonder if Knox will be on the dev edition? A asop note??? Would be lame!
damn this sucks. the note 2's bootloader was unlocked within a few weeks of release.

But even with an unlocked bootloader on the dev edition, how many ROMs, kernels, etc. will be available? I know that Beanz and some other devs said they will get it, but the number of ROMs will still be fairly limited. Not sure if it is really worth it.

It will be limited because not as many devs will have a DE version of this phone. They might be able to port some roms but it won't be anything close to the note 2 community

so why will this bootloader never be unlocked if the note 2 took very little time to get unlocked?

Well, the note 3 just happens to have a chastity belt of a bootloader which is also guarded by bastard of a shot gun called knox.
Who's to say any tampering with the boot wont trigger knox and void us all to warranty hell.
I was looking forward to using an unlocked bootloader just to get the kernels ect, but I come from the Droid Bionic so im fairly use to using safestrap.
If I can get the bloat gone, deodexed, with a few cpu scripts ill be happy.
Well I giess id be happy with some TW kit kat roms. As long as it imprives battery life and rids the rom of all un-nessesities.

Wish I knew about how the bootloader was screwed. I Purchased 2 note 3's at full retail, and sold both of my note 2's, only to find out about the bootloader issue after it was all done. I had been so busy at work I didnt have time to research the note 3 very much. I just assumed it would be similar to the note 2 bootloader. This may be what causes me to leave vzw. I hate that they refuse to allow me to use my phones the way I want.
Your departure will not be noticed. Should probably research first before spending 1500 dollars.
If your looking for a few investment ideas with no research first, I got a few ideas.

I bet you feel better about yourself after being rude for no reason.
The note 2 was never intended to be unlocked by Samsung. Adam outler and the xda guys just happened to find a easy way to unlock. Of course once Sammy figured out how they did that, they had to patch that hole and make it harder for devs.

I thought about turning my 3 in to get the DE version but since safe strap looks like it'll be a go soon I'm not. I think if you use touch wiz roms there's really no need to with the New development on safe strap

Anyone that buys a phone with no research, at full price, and just expects it to all come together like the previous model is an idiot.
You make your bed, lie in it.

You sound like a people person, a real joy to hang out with.
More of a realist that doesn't bull**** and gives it to you straight. Probably should research before you press buy on a whim.
I've havw two upgrades on a Verizon Employee account, I get an upgrade every 10 months and yet still haven't just went and blown money just to blow it. Clearly you can afford to spend 1300$ no problem, but don't come here whining because you just expected something.

At no point did I "whine", I stated my situation. I also never said I needed my exit from vzw to be noticed, or that it was anyone's fault other than my own. You just seem to have a need to be negative towards me and my situation. Which, from the beginning I said was my own fault, and that I didnt have time to research because I had been very busy at work. and you immediately began talking down. Realist or not, your still being a rude for no reason. Do we know each other in real life? have I offended you in the past? I dont understand why you have such animosity towards me.
I have been doing 80+ hour work weeks for the past month, and wanted to purchase the phones as a reward to myself, and my wife who starts a new job on monday. I had experience with the note line, and it was an excellent product. So I thought / assumed I would have a similar experience with this product. why that offends you? I have no clue. but by all means, lose as much sleep as you need to over the situation.
Just relax buddy the phone will be unlocked soon enough

Root finally out? Nope nevermind.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/help/s7-s7-edge-root-t3321556/page16 Look there and you'll see it looks like root has finally been achieved. Sounds like they installed the newest TWRP and then using that flashed supersu. It does trip Knox though. I'm about to head off to work so I can't test this now but it looks promising.
Yeah source code is out for g930f & g935f but as that op says:

Well, I guess I shouldn't have opened this thread then. That's what I get for trying to think that early in the morning.

Looks like you may be charging that thing for a while, then. Seems that even the T-Mobile version is subject to the plague that is the locked bootloader for right now. Hopefully someone can figure something out or Samsung releases something along the lines of HTC's bootloader unlock for us. For once, the Snapdragon appears to be more crippled than the Exynos.
Yeah. I wouldn't count on anything any time soon. Not days, not weeks....
If you want a root able device. I would suggest taking the phone back.
Ummmmm, do you guys know what's going on with root on the US versions?

What are you talking about? T-Mobile has an unlocked boot loader. It's been confirmed dozens of times. Where are you getting your information from?

Ummmmm, no.

Unless John Legere at TMO can sway the powers-that-be at Samsung to unlock the bootloader for the G930T/G935T (and supposedly he's trying), nobody will be rooting any time soon.

You must not get on here much. This is the biggest story lately and the reason why everyone is mad/frantic.
TMOBILE locked the bootloader John is playing us after 14 days when return period is up he will tell you guys Samsung said no its has nothing to do with Samsung it's the u.s carriers with the new leasing programs, warranty exchanges, and unauthorized tethering...They are losing money from phones which have been rooted

I understand everyone being upset about the latest development but some need to calm down a bit. Not saying it's anyone in this thread though some comments are a bit over the top. Maybe some people are new around here or others have the memory of a goldfish but this isn't' the first time this has happened to a device. There are a multitude of ways around this. Motorola who is known for locking bootloaders with almost a hatred for consumers, was defeated with the combined effort of many people on XDA. They managed to find the key to unlock the bootloader and it was smooth sailing from there.
Will we obtain the key? Quite possibly. we'll either do it the hard way and get lucky running a program on multiple computers and phones to decrypt it. The other option is that it'll be leaked by an internal source (probably the most likely). Samsung might even give us a dev program to unlock it similar to HTC. The fact is Samsung doesn't want a large customer base to be this unhappy. We are the most influential consumer base as well. Think of all the changes and additions to Android over the past few years. Changes that started here first and were adopted by manufacturers. They use us and in a way, need us to show them what people want. Let's not forget that XDA is the most influential Android site on the net. If Samsung gets snuffed here badly it'll spread very quickly.
TL;DR It'll happen one way or another guys. Chill out. May not be in the time frame we're use to these days (remember waiting weeks to months for root back in the day?) but it will happen. focus on pressuring those who can exact change into doing so. For the ones capable of it you should focus on ways around this.
I for one am not worried. I had a Motorola Defy that had a locked bootloader. By the time I had bought the phone though it had been out for a few months and people had found a way to put custom roms on it so I was happy.
At least I know I'll be able to keep my Samsung pay around for a bit ?
