Not Gorilla Glass? - Acer Iconia A500

I just picked up a Nushield DayVue screen protector, mostly for fingerprints than anything else.
I noticed while polishing the tablet before installation that I've got a scratch in the glass. Thankfully it's over the black border and not the screen so it doesn't impact my use at all. If I had to guess I'd say it was caused by something being on the inside of the Acer case when I slipped it over it, and getting dragged across the screen. You know how tight that case is when you slip it over.
If this thing were Gorilla glass I don't think it ever would have happened.

It is not. that's bad.

I got a scratch on top right corner and don't know why i got it. luckily it is kinda not noticable. I post this before and got deleted somehow

strong glass
There are many different types of so called super strong glass.it really is just a selling strategy. Thou some glass is stronger then others all of it can and will be damaged.especially touch devices.
Be careful even gorillas can be injured if they decide to be careless.Just because something says its better does not mean its damage proof
The blonde geeky girl
Gorillas are cute and cuddly

gorilla glass doesn't mean scratch proof.
a guy at work was leaning over my desk yesterday and propped his hand on my iconia to reach for something on the other side of the desk... i freaked, but the iconia was unbroken.... which saved the other guy full msrp!

True, but you'd think that getting a scratch on the glass while it's in the case and UNDER where the case covers would be pretty darn difficult...
I've seen videos of people dragging keys across Gorilla Glass and not causing damage, and I guarantee nothing near that kind of abuse happened to my A500. It apparently scratched as easy as a cheap window.
With that in mind, I'm double glad I got my screen protector. And I know people have called Acer and been told it is NOT Gorilla Glass despite the posting on Corning's website so there seems to be much confusion of the makeup of our screens.

A little off topic, but I would take anything Acer support says with a big grain of salt. I was told that the A500 does not have a GPS receiver and it was impossible to transfer files via USB with a Mac.
No scratches on my A500.

Actually, if you get a bit of sand stuck between a case and any glass, that is the most likely to scratch as is has a reasonable amount of pressure, the case still will let the tablet wiggle, and it can be there for a while.

agree, is very strong, but is NOT un-scratchable (I dont know is this last word is an english word XD)

small pieces of silica such as you'll find in pocket lint will scratch gorilla glass. Also, as you carry the tablet outdoors fine pieces of silica dust may adhere to finger print oils on the screen and scratch it the next time you rub your finger across the screen. If you want your screen to stay pristine, get a protector or clean it gently, regularly

Galaxy S phone has Gorilla glass and mine is scratched... so Gorilla glass or not, it will get scratched without protection.

Trust me...I got scratches on my tab Though I have no clue what happened

Actually, the true test to see if it's Gorilla glass or not is to take your A500 and bash it over your head. Let us know the results...

"Gorilla glass" on Samsung Omnia 7? Still not confirmed .
Dell Streak has it.
Samsung Galaxy S has it.
Samsung Focus has it. Just tweeter confirmation from Samsung USA.
Omnia 7 - still no 100% positive source.
Thanks!
Update:
This is by far the best explanation that I got so far by Mobiletechword.
Hi Kraft,
There's obviously no official confirmation (press release etc..) but that's what a Samsung Rep told me when I asked him about it during the Oct11th launch event. You may also remember that The Gorilla Glass announcement of the Galaxy S line of phones only came (IIRC) 3 months after the product release. My guess is that Samsung can't officially say anything because the Gorilla Glass is one of the Dell Venue Pro selling features too so OEMs (and MS) decided to all have their own differentiating features to talk about and not step on each others toes. Take DLNA for example: It's available on all of HTC's new Android handsets and Samsung handsets too but is missing from the WP7 devices. That's because LG got it as "an exclusive" for WP7. Same for SRS/Dolby: It'son all Samsung's Android devices but surprisingly only on HTC's WP7 phones etc...
Now I'm definitely not going to try to "test" the Omnia 7 screen to really see if's a Gorilla glass but everything is pointing towards it. Gorilla Glasses aren't indestructible thought and can be relatively "easily" scratched like any other piece of glass (take a sample diamond ear ring or sand paper etc..) they just won't shatter in millions of piece if your device hits the ground etc.. Anyway the official list isn't even up to date: http://www.corning.com/gorillaglass/devices.aspx No Dell Venue Pro, Nokia N8 etc...
The samsung reps could have been wrong thought.. but glass on my Galaxy S is perfectly identical to the one on the Omnia 7... so who knows lol..
Sorry for asking, but what is "Gorilla Glass"? I own an Omnia 7, so how can I check?
Checked on the Website, nothing mentioned, so no idea at the moment.
Gorilla glass is a special process that toughens the Glass to help resist against scratches, shattering etc.
Dell Streak has it.
Samsung Galaxy S has it.
Samsung Focus has it. Just tweeter confirmation from Samsung USA.
Omnia 7 - still no 100% positive source.
dropped phone and it slid across my floor tiles for about 50cm.... and it got scratched.... if its got gorilla glass then its pretty weak imo.
What do you mean by scratched? How bad is it? Do you have to replace the screen?
Edit: Can you post any pictures? I' known for dropping my phones, so I'm particularly interested in this info.

I got insurance with my phone, so if it gets more scratches I might get it repaired for $50AU. What's better is if it breaks I can get a replacememnt for $250AU, but i've only had this for just over 2 weeks ><
I bought a screen protector, and as my posts in this forum has shown, multitouch gets affected when a screen prot is added. Maybe its just the screen protector? no idea, my guess was its the phone having conductivity problem when a plastic screen prot is added.
Thx.
I don't like screen protectos either. I do not buy one for my phone.
I never use any protectors, too.
This was just to clarify . So far I cant find 100% positive information.

I have yet to scratch my screen on either my hd2 or my hd7, neither has my wife or son on their hd2's. What kind of screen is the hd7 and why would the omnia scratch so easy? Is there a coating on it that scratches?
good morning to all
this is a beautiful forum
I have a question
is glued the glass to the screen?
i dont think its gorilla glass as i have a tiny hairline scratch on mine.
Glad i got a screen protector on it out the box it seems with some reviews popping up on the net about little marks being too easy to obtain on the samsung screen.
Don't care if people think it looks silly with one on it works...
The slogan "don't be a fool, wrap your tool" seems to have moved on to phones now.
I'd rather have scratches (as long as there tiny) then a sticker on my device.
Each to his own, I guess
I've had mine for over a week now and I have just been using it as I did with my last phone. I'm not wreckless but I dont wrap it in cotton wool either. There isn't a scratch on it yet, it still looks brand new, so I'm with 001mic I would much rather have the full touch sensitivity and feel of an exposed screen (even with a few scratches) than a sticker on the front!
I picked up a Samsung 'phone sock' for my Omnia 7 as I didn't want to go down the whole screen protector route either. Annoyingly, although the sock was marketed as being an Omnia 7 accessory, it is of course a generic 'one-size-fits-many-models' accessory, and this case, it happens that the size doesn't fit this model particularly well.
With some rather vicious and vigorous stretching, the phone just about squeezes in, though if I drop it, there's a very good chance that the top edge will take some scratches if it goes down head-first.
That said, from a screen protection point of view, it's not bad - it means that I don't have to freak out every time I almost put my keys or loose change in the wrong pocket, and offers at least *some* protection from scratches should my drunken paws lose grip on a particularly savage night out.
Also very easy to slide the phone in and out of the sock - and there's the added bonus that the screen gets some of my greasy fingerprints wiped off it each time I slide it in and out of the sock as well.
Almost an all-round win - if only it fit the phone just a bit better... Maybe I'll just use a normal sock and slap a Samsung sticker on it.

[Q] Question About Fascinate Screen

Hi there, Fascinate people!
I have a Captivate on AT&T (a.k.a. the my-signal-runs-away-from-buildings carrier). One of my absolute favorite features of my phone--a feature I had believed was common to all Galaxy S models--is the seemingly indestructible Gorilla Glass screen. I've carried this phone naked in my pocket for months now and the screen is still perfect!
A friend of mine liked my Captivate so much that she purchased a Fascinate as her very first smartphone. She put a screen protector and a case on it (two safety mechanisms I've blatantly rejected in favor of the uberslim Captivate), but not two days after purchasing the phone, she had scratch marks in the glass, below the screen protector in the soft button area. Granted, she has probably been carrying the device in her purse, but nonetheless I was blown away by this! I inspected it further today, and it actually looks like the scratching may be below the surface of the glass.
So my question is this: wtf? Is the Fascinate screen wimpier than the rest of the Galaxy S line? Is it possible that dust entered the phone and scratched the surface below the glass surface? Is this the sort of thing she might get an exchange for? Has anybody else experienced this, especially so quickly after purchasing?
Thanks for all of your help!
Ask the someone who knows... Ask samsung... I have no idea.
This just sounds like you are blaming us for your friend's woes. I feel like giving you the benefit of the doubt for now.
Anyways, ask them or VZW.
I haven't had any issues that you mention.
I've dropped my phone and had it unprotected since I bought it and it still looks brand new. No idea what's up with your friends phone.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
The fascinate does have gorilla glass. It holds up to a lot of abuse: you can't scratch out with keys, etc.
I can't speak to scratches below the screen, never seen anything like that.
Gorilla glass can be scratched (especially by any form of sand, which is more common than you might expect), and it can shatter. This is discussed in the accessories thread.
You also have a few options if you want to keep your phone thin. Look into steinheil, real look etc.screen protectors, also discussed in accessories.
Sorry to hear about your friend's screen. Tender care and a soft clean pocket will get you pretty far, but the back cover especially will scratch up on you no matter how careful you are. Fortunately the back is cheap to replace.
Swyped w/ XDA App. When in doubt, mumble.

Jewelry is a common scratcher too.
I have a screen protector on my phone, just in case... its an invisible shield, so it covers the whole screen. I passed on the VZW ones because I figured it just covered only the screen, but the invisible shields do have an orange peel kinda look to them.
I have been carrying my fascinate since launch unprotected in my pocket, and my screen is still flawless! I just bought a protector from a local uscc store for the mesmerize that covers the whole screen yesterday! 3 in a pack for $14.95, they fit well (except for maybe 16th of an in. at the edges) and they cover the whole screen!
2 small scratches and 1 small scuff mark on my screen and i have been VERY careful with this phone. not that impressed with the glass. took me weeks to scratch the screen on my TP carrying it the same way i carry the SF. i need to pick up a protector just to prevent any more marks.

[Q] Gorilla glass?

Can anyone tell me how the tough the glass screen is? Is it gorilla glass? Do you have any scratches on yours?
http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/#featured-products
I am looking at the LG Optimus 7 and the Samsung Omnia 7 (16GB version). I would buy an unbranded Sim free version. The O7 definitely has gorilla glass. I don't want to use a screen protector, but the last thing I want is to scratch the screen.
I'm not sure weather it has Gorilla Glass but it's a tough phone. Had it about 4 months now, dropped it several times, keep it in my pocket without a protector. No scratches at all (this includes the screen and the rest of the phone).
I've even dropped it on the dancefloor in clubs and it's been fine.
would love to share your experience.
my omnia 7 seems to scratch far more easily than my hd2 or hd7 ever did.
Scratches magically appear on the bloody thing
If the Phone has even one noticable scratch then it is much harder to sell it on. My iPhone 3G, HTC Desire and HTC HD7 were all pristine. Apple made a big deal about using harder glass from the first iPhone. The HTC Desire and HD7 both have gorilla glass. As do many others.
http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/#featured-products
To me build quality is vital. That means metal chassis and toughened glass, no creaks etc. The old Nokias ie 6310i were legendary for lasting for years, requiring no more than possibly a new battery
.
One of the key reasons why Palm failed was because of low quality, cheap Pre build quality.
So it doesnt actually have Gorilla Glass
I agree with the pristine quality. Main reason i sold the HD7 because i didnt feel it was a solid product. It was laggin behind in performance to the omnia 7 as well as build quality. Hate creaks in nokia phones. I left them with N97 and HD7 had the creaks too so i left that too.
It was indirectly confirmed by a Samsung rep to have gorilla glass.
The Samsung Focus is confirmed to have Gorilla Glass
http://www.samsung.com/us/article/get-to-know-the-samsung-focus-with-windows-phone-7
And MobileTechWorld says that the Omnia 7 does, but doesn't offer collaborative proof (but I guess the review has been told)
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010/11/23/samsung-omnia-7-hardware-tour/
I emailed Corning a few weeks ago asking about this. They said that they cannot tell me due to privacy agreements with other companies and to ask my phone manufacturer.
I find it hard to believe Samsung would put it on the focus and not the omnia 7.

It is on the Omnia 7. Samsung is not able to provide an official statement since they have an agreement in place with Microsoft.
This agreement enforces the "differentiation" of the different phones that were released by the manufacturers for the wp7 launch. Each manufacturer is allowed to advertise a unique feature of their brand ie. LG DLNA.
I also think it is gorilla glass. I have mine from middle December and no scratches at all. (glass and aluminium back). I dropped it once or twice thought, so I'm very pleased with the build quality =P
Yeah. I've dropped mine a couple of times onto a marble floor and there's not so much as a scratch anywhere.
It's a superbly built phone.
Could do with a rubber coating. Would solve all the dropping.
The phone is as slippery as a fish
I like it the way it is. Slips easily in and out of my pocket. Having a rubberised/high tactile coating would just annoy me
Well it wrecks my head. Have to hold the phone really tight to make sure it doesnt fall out. A bit better now since i got a vynil skin.
But **** that. Never had that issue on HTC phones. They were always much comfier to hold in hand and always provided plenty of tacktile grip but not too much as you said to make it slip out of pockets easily
for me the only so so item of buld quality is the home button made o plastic and having e little of movement if touched.
other than that best Phone ever after iPhone 2G
Well I have a story to tell about my Omnia 7. I dropped it while coming down the stairs on the 4th floor. My heart stopped as I heard it bang along the sides of the walls and hit the ground floor. I went down. The cover, the battery cover, the battery and the phone were spread all over. The gorilla glass has cracks but it has not come off. The phone works as if nothing happened. Only the cracks remain. Its still fully functioning and this incident happened on the 1st week of February (Feb 8th to be precise). I will post pictures of where it fell from the phone itself if anyone is interested. btw, I forced the Nodo update on Saturday and updated successfully on first go. Its a T-mobile UK unlocked.
Its a superbly built phone. Haven't seen anything like it.
I've gotta echo many other people experience here.
I've dropped mine quite a few time, this weekend just gone actually on a dance floor, fell flat on its face hard enough for the batter cover and battery to shoot off.
BUT yet not a single scratch on the screen or casing.
Which is good because like someone said, its a very slippery phone.
Well, I haven't dropped mine, but it has small scratch, that can be seen when the screen is fully cleaned and watching it at light

I don't know if Samsung10 is the official account for Samsung but I don't think anyone else can answer questions on that site. You can see Galaxy Tab is listed but they don't specifically say the 10.1 version. So, it could mean the 10.1 does use Gorilla glass, but could also mean only the 7" version does.
My guess is that it does not because if it did for sure they probably would have advertised it and the answerer on the Samsung site would have said "Yes" instead of giving the roundabout answer they did.
That list is on Corning's site: http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/#products-with-gorilla
Although it doesn't mention which specific tab; from this clip i'd guess it's not though...

I have one of the tablets from Google I/O and unless they changed the screen, I already have a small scratch on my screen . Be careful, because I don't even think I was rough with mine.
Zagg
I wasn't sure whether it had gorilla glass so i bought the screen protector by zagg just to be safe, but it also gives the added bonus of reducing finger smudges. It was trickier than most zagg covers i have used in the past to get on. I was concerned i screwed it up with lots of air bubbles but now after sitting over night it is nearly flawless. Touch sensitivity was a little iffy last night after i applied it but seems to be fine this morning.
I haven't seen concrete evidence in regards to the Tab 10.1 having Gorilla Glass.
I contacted Samsung and they assured me that it does.
If that's the case, I'm wondering if I still need a screen protector.

If you aren't careful with devices, you might as well. You can still scratch and crack gorilla glass...it's not indestructible.

Dropped my Desire Z in a gel case... from a bike @ 20km/h

And NOTHING happened. I suggest those little, cheap ass gel cases to anyone now. I was holding my phone and driving my MTB when I suddenly hit a bump and had to drop the phone not to lose control.
Anyway, the phone hit concrete in the gel case, and it only opened up the keyboard after that (hit on the floor while being closed).
Phew.
You're lucky.
I just drop mine , and the battery flew away. The 4 battery connectors are now bent.
Still, the phone's working. The dz appear to be much stronger than my old ipaid, iclose, or what ever you call it
My battery is totally covered with the gel case, I would have to rip it off to open it.
I've accidentally dropped my phone many times onto the wooden floors of my house and it has never gotten any dents or anything. One time though, i completely fumbled my phone and it flew out of my hands onto rough concrete and it only got a few small scratches which have worn off by now! haha, this is definitely a hardy phone! I've never used a case with my Desire Z and i don't plan to because i know it's a tough phone.
I can't use it without a case, it's surface it's too slippery, it just feels right in a case although it is thick as hell in it.
I used to baby my DZ in a case, but now I don't bother. I've dropped it loads, and although it does have a lot of battle scars, it still works fine.
I found all of the cases I tried made the phone ridiculously bulky as well, and I find it just much nicer to handle it "naked"

Gorilla glass disappointed me badly, i have my phone covered all the time in the holster and still has two minor scratches on the display. Silver backside surface is damaged too, not sure why.... surface layer is peeling. Otherwise, its heavy and solid.
You see, OP? That's why you should never use the phone while moving on the bike. Get one of those handlebar holders for the phone and worry not. Of course, don't drop your bike!
My recommendation? Follow the "no phone while on the saddle" rule.

This is Gorilla Glass? I would've never imagined it; I broke the screen on one in a stupidly short fall and this replacement already has a scratch!

According to this webpage, Desire Z should have Gorilla Glass.
But I expected more.
gorilla glass is far superior over old screen screens. my g2 has an almost flawless screen, same with my girlfriends. neither of us has had a phone for longer than six months with out me replacing the screen. so yeah we must have gorilla glass or we have both just became lucky

I do have a holder I was just changing some settings on GPS ;P
Also it does have Gorilla Glass but I am using hte screen protector anyway.
Also without the Gel-Case the DesireZ wouldn`t be broken imo.
I`ve threw my DZ many times very hard on the floor and against the wall and the only thing that happened was that the battery-cover opened and the battery dropped out.
No display crack or something similar
The DZ is the best mobile phone ever! And i`ve seen many (broken and working ) devices. Try to throw a Samsung <foo> against the wall, you will only do this once
