First to break it

Got my G2 on Wednesday and managed to throw it on concrete on Saturday. Scratched the crap out of the screen and case, thought this can't get any worse and then the screen cracked when I touched it. The screen still works but the outer casing is messed up. Sent it off to T-Mobile so hopefully it won't cost too much to fix.
I am pretty p*ssed off at how easily this phone broke. I have subjected my Vario III to some fairly serious abuse over the last 18 months and it still works fine. This phone on the other hand is wrecked after one measly drop.

Ouch man that sucks, to be fair tho there not really designed to take that kind of abuse, also the Vario III is a brick compared to the hero lol, you could probabyl drive a car over it.
i gess its the price we pay for lighter thinner more streamlined phones.

I'll have to be careful then I threw my magic across the road. - It skidded across before I could stop it. It ended up with a few small circular cracks where I could see that the material under the plastic coating is deffo metal. Not a mark on the screen, because the curves at the top and bottom of the magic protected it.
Reckon its worth condsidering a magic handset when the price comes down a bit. Lots of folks slagged it off for looking plasticky but its a tank of a handset underneath.
I'm passing mine on to my brutish boyfriend, cos I know it can take some knocks. Then again maybe it just fell right? and yours just fell exactly
wrong. Certainly wouldnt be dropping it again to check if it is robust LOL

Some might have took out insurance as I think you can for 7 days after you bought it. Glad to see your honest

I found the Touch HD really solid and resistant I'll be carrefull with my Hero witch is coming soon

YOu threw it on concrete, what do you expect? Simple physics, concrete is harder than the material the Hero is made from, so when the two meet with force the Hero will lose, no matter how hard the plastic its made from. It's not diamond coated.

It was very tempting to take out the insurance but I was already covered on my home insurance so I thought I'd rather take a bigger excess hit than go along the fraud route.
RichDog, I'm afraid collisions between complex objects are never simple physics. Concrete is hard but the phone will have many different properties such as the elasticity of the plastic casing and maleability of the metal casing. Both of these act as shock obsorbers to disipate the energy of the impact, hence why almost all mobiles would have survived wih minor scratches. Mobile phone designers should incorporate a certain amount of impact tolerance into their products as almost all will be dropped at some point in their expected life. Mine only dropped from a height of three feet, a fall which almost all mobiles will have survived with minor scratches.

I remember dashing my Trinity across the Office some time ago after finishing a phone call to my provider about something, (never down anything like that before in frustration) what a very robust phone indeed

My HTC Diamond was submerged in some puddle outside while it was raining, didn't realise until I couldn't find the phone in my pocket, and even then it was still working.
Your just a bit unlucky.

Hopefully it was just bad luck but I would not be surprised to see a lot more of these phones break pretty easily. The problem is the large screen which isn't sunk in, makes it very vulnerable when dropped.

Mines in a rubber case already - I'm learning from scraping my Google IOn.

My thoughts exactly. Also note that capacitative touch screens are made of glass, not plastic, so they are not as crack-resistant as resistive touch screens, which only have a vulnerable glass layer UNDER the plastic later.
So it's really not fair to criticize the durability of the device when you're the one who was careless. Remind me to try that line at the chinaware shop next time I'm in it -- drop a couple of expensive dinnerware, then blame the shop and manufacturer for making plates that are not as tough as the plastic ones I have at home!

I can't wait till I can throw my diamond of a roof when I get the Hero
The normal speaker has broke, but the loudspeaker still works I mean What the F is that

I'm not trying to say it wasn't my fault, all I was saying is that it unreasonable to expect a phone not to have some form of impact in it's life. Maybe I was unlucky and it landed badly but if they are truly this fragile then I can guarantee that there are going to be a heck of a lot of disappointed people with broken Hero's.

Just an update in case this happens to anyone else. It cost £96 to get it fixed through T-Mobile. Took over a week and a half before I got the quote but once agreed the phone was back at the store within a few days. The £96 was for the replacement glass window and casing.

But lemme make myself clearer...I dropped my phone on the pavement and therefore I now have a scratched screen. While we all know metal can't scratch glass..pavement and diamond rings apparently still apply. But this isn't to simply warn all of you of the obvious fact that screen protectors are very handy on any device, but its to inform that no method found on he internet will cure scratches on the glass. From toothpaste to Brasso(which makes it worse actually). Nothing works..and therefore you are doomed to the scratches! Not sure what half he people on the internet are raving about on half the remedies for scratches in glass, but that's all it is, is hype. So learn from me either live with the scratches, buy protectors while you can...or end up forking over the money for a new screen eventually.

Bummer...not even sure if a screen protector would have survived concrete. But a good case would have...

Sorry lol..Was typing it on my phone while watching Reno 911...I meant to say "metal can't scratch gorilla glass as easily".
Otherwise...I guess I'll try and wait out the arrival of HTC bravo or Supersonic...if either come to the US with a sim card carrier, and just give this nexus one to my GF. She claims I'm just being paranoid over something small so I guess she won't mind taking over ownership should a better phone come out.

Your completely giving up on the phone because a simple scratch on the screen, and instead you will wait for the Bravo a phone uglier than the concept model? This scratch must be very, very, bothersome.
I do get heavily irritated over small things such as this, but I would never buy an entire new phone over it. If its noticeable when the phone is on, then maybe yea..

Have you priced out a new screen, by any chance?

All I keep reading is currently a repair for things like screens run 250 from HTC and maybe 75 to 150 from some place in Texas.
As for giving up on the nexus, I didn't mean give up on the nexus...just give it away when they come out with something newer should the specs not be lacking in the hardware section. The all black of the bravo, or even red/black of the supersonic are more my style anyways. But if their specs are worse, ill stick with the nexus.

Luckily I keep the stock case on...
because it seems I forget it is in my lap and I get out of the car, and so far I've dropped it about 5 times on the pavement and it is still beautiful!

Haha..you're totally right the stock case was doing me a great justice but I had gotten out of the car texting and sat my case down in the passenger seat and on the way back and at the edge of the pavement and grass it fell out of my hand lol ... and skipped around a a bit and resulted in one scratch/etch you can see while the phone is on and about 3 more while its off. Even the edges of whatever material the phone is made of has an etch in it. All these are very small seperately but all together are very distracting. I hope eventually I can get the screen repaired for under a hundred. Then I'd buy a protector and be happy with my nexus. But right now the prices to repair them are more than I originally paid for the phone. An I'd rather not pay more than a hundred for screen repair.

The right screen protector, such as the invisibleSHIELD or Clear Protector, would have prevented this.. I only say this cuz of personal experience..

Mine goes in the passenger seat with a seatbelt firmly on and airbags fully deployed.
The wife gets shoved in the glove box

Some watch repairers have buffing machines to take scratches out of glass, you could try to find one of them.

I didn't even put the battery in my Nexus One until after I had put an Invisibleshield on it.

i highly recommend investing in a full phone protector.. i paid $35 and they wrapped my phone entirely in plastic screen protector material. Lifetime warranty on the stuff too.
If it ever gets scratched just bring it back and they replace it free.

Screen shattered

Just a quick warning, I dropped my streak from a height of about 2ft onto my floor at work, picked it up and put it in my pocket.
When I unlocked it, to my absolute horror, I noticed the LCD has cracked underneath the glass (which is undamaged).
Gutted.

i would say one downfall of the streak is that its so slim and smooth it is very easy to drop,
i wish they had put a lanyard strap hole like on the psp so you could have it around your wrist

That is extremely unfortunate, at least the glass held up
But in reality, any smartphone device owner is extremely lucky when they drop a device on a hard floor above 1 foot and it survives. Carpet helps a lot, but wood/cement/tiles just destroys gadgets. I would not even consider dropping my main monitor even 4 inches above ground, why would I treat my phone any different?
The only solution is to never drop your device!

....i just dont understand people who dont take care of their gadgets, my G1 is still in perfect condition, not a single mark. the same gos for all my other gadgets too. i wrap them in microfiber cloths, treat them like new born babies.
i just dont get it, i was watching techzilla the other day and they were both saying how they already dropped their brand new iphone 4s multiple times. i mean, you have in your possession and extremely expensive device yet you STILL treat them like there some old nokia brick from 10years ago.
my streak cost me £450..to me thats a hell of allot of money for something so small, it is at this moment in time completely irreplaceable and if anything ever happened to it id need happy pills just to avoid hanging myself..

The problem with the Streak is that while the Gorilla Glass allows some flexibility, the LCD screen behind it does not and is extremely rigid. Pair that with a case which is too thin to prevent bending, the size of the phone which means it's going to be stressed in a pocket when you move around, and you have a real design weakness.The G1 had a big chunky case round it to protect it - and of course the LCD was much smaller.
There are several reports of this happening to the Streak, and you don't have to abuse the phone for the LCD glass to fail. Sounds to me that they haven't made any shock absorbtion or flexible mounts for the screen in the the drive to keep size down, so any impact or distortion to the case is instantly transmitted to the LCD panel. It's happened to those who cosset their devices with kid gloves, even [email protected] (who got it replaced by the O2 store)

Droped mine today,
I was going out to the car and it was in the Dell case which was not closed.
It fell out of the Dell case onto the concrete floor face down (just like a buttered peice of toast) sods law.
But its insured and O2 are sending me one out in two days.
Note to self, close case properly, get a new case and just be more careful.
Never done this to a phone before in 15 years. Perhaps too much glass.

Carrying mine in my hand (in the Dell leather case) the other day it knocked against a post , I didn't notice until later that there's a tiny chip on the glass below the on/off button and the casing has raised a bit so that the button is now slightly inset. The Dell leather case does not offer any protection on three edges and it's the edges that need it most. I'm lucky, only a small chip and the device still works perfectly, it's taught me a lesson in how fragile it is, my next case will be better designed if I have to do it myself.

I agree, all my devices have been wrapped in either silicone case or invisible shield at the very least. Usually, I wrap em with both cause sometimes the dust gets in between the case and the phone and it scratches the surface of the device. Maybe its overkill, but the amount I paid for my devices (especially the Streak) is also overkill.

How durable is our HD2?

Got my HD2 couple months back and using it with silicon cover since beginning but now I want to take the cover off and show the real beauty of the phone to everyone but I am too scared to take the silicon cover off because I am clumsy and I drop my phone way too frequently.
I know the phone looks very durable but exactly how durable is it??? can people share some experiences like oh I dropped it from 5ft and it was intact or oh I dropped it from 2ft and the screen broke etc etc.
I used to have HTC Kaiser/tilt and I dropped it way too my times without any covers but it never gave up on me.
PS: I know there is no real way to define durability of a cellphone but u know there are some cellphones which are really delicate and u have to handle them with extra extra care. While there are some like the kaiser who are made for rough use. Just want to know which category our HD2 belongs to?

Hey, i droped it many times and nothing happens.
Sometimes from 150 cm and a bit more and less.

I have thrown my Diamond down the street many times on a night out, but I would never want to drop my HD2 outside of a case, the entire front of the phone is glass, so you may get lucky a couple of times you may not. I wouldn't want to take the chance, it's expensive to replace.

I've dropped my HD2 a few times, most recent was when my mate rugby tackled me on a night out and broke my hand in the process, the HD2 survived almost unscathed due to it being in its case, although there is now a tiny chip on the front-facing bezel above the headphone socket where it meets the glass.
I never bothered with a screen protector and the screen looks as good as new and I've had mine since Nov2009. It's a tough little phone. As long as you keep it in its case when its not being used you will be fine.

If you're that clumsy, I'd suggest you keep it in it's case Hardik119 as Murphys law says you'll drop it as soon as you take that cover off?

It's great, I dropped it several times from 0.5m-1.0m and it's working perfectly ATM.

Had mine for 9 months now, never put a silicon case or it or screen protector. Only use the leather-ish case that came with it, have dropped my HD2 loads of times. I am litterally the worst person with phones, i had four new phones in a 2 year contract before this because i am so clumbsy, including the kaiser and tp2. HD2 is far more resilient and mine has not noticable marks on it.
Maybe i'm lucky with this phone, but i have seen videos of hd2 and iphone being pushed together screen to screen and the iphone breaks way earlier and considering the screen is that much smaller more pressure would be technically be being applied to the HD2.
Dust in your HD2's USB port is more likely to break your phone than dropping it.

The screen is gorilla glass, check out youtube for some videos of guys trying to break or scratch it, not easy! As for the case, I dropped it a couple of times on asphalt, and while the case looked fine, there is a rubbery edging around the screen that did get gouged. You can't really tell by looking, but you can feel it.

Such a classy device needs to be treated elegantly!!
A screen protector is a must have.
And to show off with ur sexy phone use a OEM leather pouch (slim and rich looking) that can be bought from ebay with a reasonable price.

for such a big screen with lots of glass, its pretty tough, im a bit clumsy with phones, like some, i dropped by LG BL40, good job, it was ****e, but screen shatterd, chucked it in the bin and got this...always used the pouch, but had it out playing music, a broom(yes a broom) fell over and i have a c shaped scratch, drives me mad...but did scratch easier i thought..the case marks pretty easy to. But for such a large phone, thumbs up.

not sure I agree with the screen protector. I can never keep one on the phone, it will be on for a couple of months, then start annoying me and I take it off. The screen is very scratch resistant and I don't tend to drop phones. It stays in it's bodyglove kickstand case (which adds a little lip to the edges) and goes in a leather beltclip case.

The screen is very durable. Over the 9 months I've owned my HD2 the screen hasn't had one scratch on it despite no screen protector.
Drop it and one of two things will happen: nothing or total destruction of the screen.
Unfortunately, after 9 months of being careful I recently dropped my phone onto concrete from about 2 feet and the screen is totalled
The problem lies with the thinness of the bezel where it meets the screen (it deforms easily) and the tight tolerances of the join between the bezel and glass.
The combination is deadly and any design engineer ought to have noticed that at pre-production.
Someone at HTC sacrificed how the phone felt in the hand to how the glass screen reacts to side on pressure as a result of the bezel deforming on impact.
I'd be happy to have a chunkier bezel with just a few more mm of metal on the bezel if it prevents deformation on impact.
The phone is insured but I'll probably get reamed at policy renewal time next year.

the hd2 is durable as far as drops go (i don't use a case) - i've dropped mine twice, once on a wooden floor from about 5 ft up,no damage, and once onto concrete from the same height,only damage a very tiny dent/scratch on the corner of the case where it hit the street.
however, do NOT believe the bull**** about the screen being super scratch resistant !! after only two weeks of GENTLE use,and only being kept in my back pocket with nothing else,there was a one inch scratch across the front. i know,i saw the videos as well, but the fact remains. it scratches,and it scratches pretty damn easy.

Neither case nor screen protector has (or will) ever touched the perfect curves of my hd2. Furthermore, it has seen a heavy ammount of abuse.
As far as dropping it goes... I wouldn't reccomend it. Mine has survived chest high (I'm 6'4") drops on to concrete (landing screen first) and not broken. However, many a sad story has been told by users with falls from lesser heights. The unlucky folks notwithstanding, I have to say that the screen is certainly well-made. In the 6+ months I've owned it, the screen remains conspicuously scratch-free. It should be noted that I often take out my car keys and and aggressively assault the screen with them (to the horror of onlookers). I also regularly lay my device down face-first. Still can't seem to find a single scratch.
As previously mentioned, I do not have or use a case of any kind. I keep my phone on me at all times in my front pocket (screen facing my leg). This includes when I am at work. I work... at a warehouse. Which means my hd2 gets to enjoy pallets, boxes, and various other blunt-force trauma slamming against it in my pocket. Here's what I have found.
The parts that are NOT so tough:
1) Battery cover.
I have noticeable scratches and marks on the battery cover. There is a thin coating on it that will flake off after a certain ammount of abuse.
2) The flash.
My led flash was dislodged slightly (some time while at work) and pressed up against the vibration motor. Although it was easy enough to fix by popping the phone open and remounting it.
The parts that ARE tough:
So far... everything else.

No. It really doesn't. Whatever happend to your phone to cause a scratch is unfortunate... but it is the exception, not the rule. When I am unable to INTENTIONALLY scratch something, aforementioned "thing" can not be considered "easily scratchable".

I dropped mine from 4-5 feet high a few times (a couple onto concrete) and it was fine.
Then yesterday I dropped it from 2 feet high onto a wood floor and the screen was totally destroyed. Must have just hit at the right (wrong) angle...
Also, my screen has several scratches on it, so saying it is EXTREMELY scratch resistant is BS. However, now that my screen is destroyed anyway, I tried scratching it with a key, and knife, a pushpin, and a couple other things (haven't tried my wife's diamond ring, heh) and cannot for the life of me scratch it. But it DID get scratched somehow... and one of them was there after only a few days of use.

however, do NOT believe the bull**** about the screen being super scratch resistant !! after only two weeks of GENTLE use,and only being kept in my back pocket with nothing else,there was a one inch scratch across the front. i know,i saw the videos as well, but the fact remains. it scratches,and it scratches pretty damn easy.

the one inch scratch on your HD2 is very unfortunate, but does not mean at all that it scratches "pretty damn easy". At this point I totally disagree. I have my HD2 now for more than 1 year and I'm a heavy user, but after all this time there is not one single scratch to detect on the screen. I must say though, that I always have my HD2 in a leather belt case when not in use, but never used a screen protector on my HD2.
So in conclusion: the HD2 does not scratch easlly at all, but you have just been unfortunate and very unlucky.

I've recently replaced the screen in my HD2 because the old one had sustained some serious damage through an unfortunate encounter with asphalt. The device can handle some serious punishment, but the screen can crack quite easily when dropped just the wrong way. I've heard the screen can handle 400 newton of force which is quite a lot, but a 1 meter drop and slide across asphalt was too much.
Also, the screen is almost scratch-free except for sand! Sand can scratch the screen easily (had it in my pocket when working on the beach) so use a screenprotector when in a sandy environment.

While the phone is durable, it is always a good idea to to have the phone in a gell case to keep it from getting mangled when dropped. having owned several touch phones I have not found a need for a screen protector as I do not put my phone face down or in a pocket with other things...

There's obviously no official confirmation (press release etc..) but that's what a Samsung Rep told me when I asked him about it during the Oct11th launch event. You may also remember that The Gorilla Glass announcement of the Galaxy S line of phones only came (IIRC) 3 months after the product release. My guess is that Samsung can't officially say anything because the Gorilla Glass is one of the Dell Venue Pro selling features too so OEMs (and MS) decided to all have their own differentiating features to talk about and not step on each others toes. Take DLNA for example: It's available on all of HTC's new Android handsets and Samsung handsets too but is missing from the WP7 devices. That's because LG got it as "an exclusive" for WP7. Same for SRS/Dolby: It'son all Samsung's Android devices but surprisingly only on HTC's WP7 phones etc...
Now I'm definitely not going to try to "test" the Omnia 7 screen to really see if's a Gorilla glass but everything is pointing towards it. Gorilla Glasses aren't indestructible thought and can be relatively "easily" scratched like any other piece of glass (take a sample diamond ear ring or sand paper etc..) they just won't shatter in millions of piece if your device hits the ground etc.. The samsung reps could have been wrong thought.. but glass on my Galaxy S is perfectly identical to the one on the Omnia 7... so who knows lol..

Gorilla glass is a special process that toughens the Glass to help resist against scratches, shattering etc.

dropped phone and it slid across my floor tiles for about 50cm.... and it got scratched.... if its got gorilla glass then its pretty weak imo.

What do you mean by scratched? How bad is it? Do you have to replace the screen?
Edit: Can you post any pictures? I' known for dropping my phones, so I'm particularly interested in this info.

I got insurance with my phone, so if it gets more scratches I might get it repaired for $50AU. What's better is if it breaks I can get a replacememnt for $250AU, but i've only had this for just over 2 weeks ><
I bought a screen protector, and as my posts in this forum has shown, multitouch gets affected when a screen prot is added. Maybe its just the screen protector? no idea, my guess was its the phone having conductivity problem when a plastic screen prot is added.

My wifes omnia 7 has a small scratch on it after 2 days use. Based on my experiences, It scratches like any other screen ive owned.
Don`t belive the hype.

I have yet to scratch my screen on either my hd2 or my hd7, neither has my wife or son on their hd2's. What kind of screen is the hd7 and why would the omnia scratch so easy? Is there a coating on it that scratches?

i dont think its gorilla glass as i have a tiny hairline scratch on mine.

Glad i got a screen protector on it out the box it seems with some reviews popping up on the net about little marks being too easy to obtain on the samsung screen.
Don't care if people think it looks silly with one on it works...
The slogan "don't be a fool, wrap your tool" seems to have moved on to phones now.

I've had mine for over a week now and I have just been using it as I did with my last phone. I'm not wreckless but I dont wrap it in cotton wool either. There isn't a scratch on it yet, it still looks brand new, so I'm with 001mic I would much rather have the full touch sensitivity and feel of an exposed screen (even with a few scratches) than a sticker on the front!

I picked up a Samsung 'phone sock' for my Omnia 7 as I didn't want to go down the whole screen protector route either. Annoyingly, although the sock was marketed as being an Omnia 7 accessory, it is of course a generic 'one-size-fits-many-models' accessory, and this case, it happens that the size doesn't fit this model particularly well.
With some rather vicious and vigorous stretching, the phone just about squeezes in, though if I drop it, there's a very good chance that the top edge will take some scratches if it goes down head-first.
That said, from a screen protection point of view, it's not bad - it means that I don't have to freak out every time I almost put my keys or loose change in the wrong pocket, and offers at least *some* protection from scratches should my drunken paws lose grip on a particularly savage night out.
Also very easy to slide the phone in and out of the sock - and there's the added bonus that the screen gets some of my greasy fingerprints wiped off it each time I slide it in and out of the sock as well.
Almost an all-round win - if only it fit the phone just a bit better... Maybe I'll just use a normal sock and slap a Samsung sticker on it.
