Verizon - Galaxy S II General

does anyone know if this will be 4g, I assume no, but a guy can hope can't he?

From what I've read on the tech sites, VZW is supposed to be the first U.S. carrier to get the phone and it's supposed to be LTE. Time frames talked about were Q3/Q4. AT&T is supposed to be next, following VZW by a quarter. No time frame mentioned for Sprint but they're supposed to be getting a variant. It looks like T-Mobile's getting a higher-spec version of the monster-screened Infuse called Hercules instead of the SGS2.

Droid 2 Verizon's first 4G phone? [update: verizon sales rep lies]

Just got off the phone with Verizon ordering a Droid 2. The rep told me the Droid 2 is Verizon's first 4G phone. She said they currently have 4G in 35 markets. I cant find anything about that anywhere online, so I called back and asked another rep and he again confirmed that the Droid 2 is their first 4G phone. Anyone heard about the Droid 2 supporting 4G?
edit: 2 out of 3 sales reps told me the Droid 2 was 4g. 3rd rep denied it, Customer service and Tech Support both denied it. Although the customer service rep did tell me she thought all of the phones would support 4g "Otherwise all of our customers would have to buy new phones when we roll out 4g". Uh, yeah, i think thats the point! I corrected her on the matter, and she then did some more reading and confirmed that 3G phones will not magically work on 4G. I hate it when you know more about a persons job then they do! If I sold phones I would know everything about the phones we sold.
Verizon does not have 4g available in 35 markets, and the Droid 2 is not 4g capable. According to DroidForums and BGR among other sources, Verizon will start rolling out true 4g around Black Friday with the first 4g phones to follow shortly after.

I am under that impression as well. But why are 2 different reps telling me this? Clearly either they are misinformed, or it's some super secret feature of the Droid 2. You would think if it was true they would be marketing the hell out of it. I'm going to call again when they open and see if I can talk to someone higher up. If its not true they absolutely should not be telling customers the phone supports it. She clear as day said "The Droid 2 is our first 4g phone".
As far as I know, Sprint is the only carrier with 4G at the moment. Verizon is currently testing their 4G, as is AT&T, while T-Mobile is touting its HSPA+ 3G network as having "4G Speeds". If Verizon launched the Droid 2 and it had 4G radios in it, I'm sure we'd know from them or the FCC. Those reps more than likely had no idea what they were talking about, it's just interesting you got the same answer from two different people. Out of curiosity, I think I'll call Verizon and ask them the same question.

Yes please do and let me know what they tell you. Next time I call I'm going to record the call and post it online
Im on the phone with them right now. Customer Service knows nothing about it apparently. It's the sales department that's telling people this. I'm being transferred to tech support now. Apparently this is absolutely not true (I assumed that). I'm going to call Sales again and see if I can get a 3rd rep to tell me the Droid 2 is the first 4g phone
edit: 3rd sales rep said the Droid 2 is not 4g. Interesting. Apparently they have different playbooks. I should call customer service and see if they can track down who took my order for the Droid 2 and give them a spanking. It was the first feature she mentioned! "The Droid 2 is our first 4g phone, we currently have 4G service in 35 markets". Naughty naughty verizon!

Yeah, whoever you talked to is either extremely misinformed, or just full of it. I called and talked to a rep today and said I was told that my Droid 2 I bought was a 4G phone and asked if my DInc that I'm currently on was too. He laughed and said Verizon doesn't have any 4G phones yet, because they don't even have 4G service so unfortunately I'm stuck on 3G for now. Silly telesales reps.

T-Mobile sent me a txt message...

I was sent an automated txt message saying I 'qualified for an upgrade', so, for grins and chuckles I called to kind of inquire. I think the lady was from India or something because I don't think she quite understood what I was asking but, she did inform me that their trying to upgrade all their customers to equipment compatible with At&t. She also informed me that equipment changes must be made before May 2012 when the conversion to At&t is complete. Startling news considering I thought the FCC is still mulling over the legal stuff and here I'm told the deal is already done.....sucks if it's true because I loathe At&t with a passion. Just thought I share this information with all of you.
She's probably just giving you generic whatever and has no idea on what's going on really.
Recently I've noticed a peculiar increase in dropped calls on my and my wife's G2s, as well as two friends... li wonder if we were pushed the same OTA upate, either that or the AT&T network switch may have already happened
Well the odd thing(s) I've noticed is a specific area where I used to get full bars of 3G has now reverted to EDGE service. I say odd because T-Mobile was the only 3G service in said area not even Verizon or Sprint had 3G. Now all of a sudden At&t pops up, which never did before.
I called again because I was curious about the LG G2X and I was told similar information regarding At&t and May 2012. I really am a tad concerned, anyone else have any info regarding this date? I don't mean to come off paranoid but, that's 2 people now that gave the same exact date.

Verizon commercial

Just thought it was funny that verizon dubbed over a part of the commercial where a mom is talking to a verizon rep and the son steps in to talk about the Xoom. The part where he says that it is 4g LTE upgradable, they dubbed in "including the Samsung Galaxy Tab". Was quick but i heard it, nothing ground breaking but I thought it was funny.
Wow, I never heard the version that mentioned it was 4G LTE upgradable.
Certainly doesn't seem to bode well for VZW Xoom owners, especially with the 'Xoom 4G' rumors...

I know the wifi version isn't. Verizon and Motorola promised that the Verizon XOOM would recieve a hardware upgrade to add LTE radios to it within 90 days of it's launch, but it's been 90 days and it hasn't happened yet. Now there are rumors that a new XOOM will launch, LTE-ready and with upgraded hardware, before OG XOOM owners even get the LTE upgrade.
See this article: http://androidandme.com/2011/06/carriers/verizon/will-the-xoom-4g-launch-before-the-og-xoom-gets-4g/
Yeah, got all that... Just misunderstood your post I guess

Xoom for ATT, or how to make Xoom work on ATT?

does anyone know if and when a Xoom for ATT is coming out, possible with 4G? I really want a tablet computer, and want an Android, not the Ipad 2. Also, is it possible to take a Xoom from another provider and root/make it usable in the US?
Verizon is the king!
First of all, why would you want an ATT Xoom? Verizon is the best and most reliable out of every other provider. Verizon has the download and upload speeds that can actually be called 4g, and also has the greatest coverage. The rest of the pack has maybe what you would call 3.1g speeds, lol... lame.
Anyways, there won't ever be a Xoom for ATT or any other provider for that matter. The Xoom is a Verizon exclusive just as the Droids are. In fact... the Xoom is a Droid device in reality. It was originally called the Droid Xoom, but they decided to remove the Droid name a week before its intial launch, just to leave it with the name "Xoom." Much like how the Nintendo Wii was actually officially known as the Revolution, they changed the name about a week before launch day as well. Just a little side fact for ya, lol.
This topic won't get very far but there's my 2 cents worth.
P.S. I'm guessing you mentioned ATT because you have a phone with their service? And you would like to stick with your current provider for a tablet as well? If so.. that makes perfect sense. Let's hope you can figure something out. I have the OG Droid and the Xoom.

AT&T speeds are actually faster than Verizon's where Verizon doesn't have LTE yet (most places), and Verizon phones don't work if you want to use them in Canada, Mexico, or Europe, since Verizon uses their own proprietary CDMA stuff, while the rest of the world uses GSM/HSDPA.

First... Yeah you can buy an unlocked Xoom, but what are you going to do with it?
Second... Read this http://tinyurl.com/3nj9jea
To say that ATT is faster because Verizon's 4g coverage is still growing and not in all areas just yet is absurd. Like I said, all other network providers are running basically 3.1g speeds. 4g LTE currently has an upwards of 15+mbps down, and 2+mbps up. Yes, the 4g LTE coverage is not all there yet... reason being? It is new to the scene! Just how Honeycomb is to the tablet world.
They are taking their time because they know they already have all the tools to have the coverage and speeds to be crowned a real 4g network. All it is now is a matter of laying the rest of the tracks down to finish the project, which will take time to set up all the towers, and finalize everything.
I don't know about you, but... I would like to have real 4g speeds with real 4g coverage for my devices, not some cheap 3.1g knockoff that uses the same 3g technology. Can you believe that they try to pass that crap off as 4g? Verizon's 4g LTE network is built from scratch from the ground up, unlike the rest. The rest of the providers just took the 3g they had, and made it a little bit better, yet calling it 4g. Why do you think it is taking Verizon longer to expand their 4g coverage? Because they are the only one's to actually completely build a whole new wireless networking system.
Also... Verizon is introducing global devices one at a time, in due time. Some global Droids include: Droid 2 Global, Droid Pro, and the new Droid Incredible 2. The list will grow with tablets and other devices included as the network continues to grow and expand. Verizon is the boss, that cannot be denied. Cheers!
Why are you so keen on sticking verizon down his throat?
He never mentioned verizon once in his OP?
Well, I understand that verizon covers 100% of the US with 3g/LTE and he does NOT travel overseas at all.
oh wait guyz.....
@OP- Just pop the sim card in to whatever country you want to assuming the bands match.

Lol, who's doing that? My last post wasn't about the OP, instead I was defending Verizon Wireless as a whole. The guy I quoted shot off a little haha comment in a way that it was trying to put Verizon down. "AT&T speeds are actually faster than Verizon's where Verizon doesn't have LTE yet". That can be taken as a hidden shot in the dark at a joke. Just saying. Anyways, enough bickering. It is pointless.
To the OP: It sounds like you really want ATT as your tablet service provider. Since you do not want an iPad, and want an Android device instead, might I suggest you check out this Android Honeycomb tablet on the ATT network:

I find this a little odd considering Samsung has already said what the radio versions would be and Sprint has 0 LTE setup. I call shenanigans on someone. Maybe the want posters for use in the end of next year?

sprint announced lte starting q1 2012
Sprint Will Be Getting The Galaxy Nexus.
With out a doubt Sprint will be getting the new nexus phone as all the main wireless company's in the US will be. There are two models HSPA models will go to T-mobile and AT&T and the LTE models will be on Verizon and Sprint, anyone to think otherwise wouldn't be smart to think sprint has already does this in the past with the Nexus S 4G while it advertised it being the first and only usable NFC Compatible phone but nobody in theory could actually use the NFC feature of the phone until they had updated it to version 2.3.7 and gave u Google Wallet and Google Shopper. Sprint has stated that they are going to be very aggressive setting up LTE in 2012 to try to be on par with Verizon somewhat with 4G so its all makes sense if u really think about it..
Sprint announced LTE for next summer with it's first LTE devices launching next summer as well.

Wow hater. All major carriers and a few not so major carriers are getting the phone. Just like the SGS2...
looks like they might release the phone then launch lte? I hope LTE will be unlimited
Samsung/Google already dropped the ball in not releasing this device (or having a press event for it) before the iPhone4S was released. The best they can do now to salvage their product in the public's eye is to release it on as many carriers as possible.
im waiting for something more than a packing slip as a real confirmation.

Not a hater I own a NS4G and use Sprint everyday. I was just being honest. So far we know very little about what Sprint will use for their LTE and if there is any compatability with Samsung already has in the phone. I know all of the carriers will get a variant of the Galaxy Nexus but I honestly don't expect any of them to get one until after May of next year and I also think its possible late next year this phone will be advertised like crazy on Sprint and their new LTE.
