Kindle DX or G-Tablet Cases - Acer Iconia A500

Anyone try any Kindle DX case with the Iconia A500 yet? They are almost the same size -- I think the Kindle is less than 1/2" wider though.
Dimension
Kindle DX vs A500
Long side
26.4 cm vs 26 cm
Short side
18.3 cm vs 17.7 cm
Thickness
1 cm vs 1.33 cm
Also looks like the Viewsonic G-Tablet is almost identical in size.
Long side
26.7 cm vs 26 cm
Short side
17.3 cm vs 17.7 cm
Thickness
1.3 cm vs 1.33 cm

I was using this case and it did fit, but it made the tab very heavy. I like the Acer case better.

I have the G-Tab case with the keyboard and it works great as long as you use a USB hub. it doesn't matter which one and you can multiple devices with the hub. I tested with two keyboards and they both worked at the same time. Without the hub, the keyboard will not work.

No problem. The mouse actually works too. You just don't get the pointer, yet. I believe Honeycomb 3.1 should take care of that.

Just ordered this case and a very cool ultra portable USB HUB (link). With a bit of luck I think I can tuck this hub into the case and not have to have a second piece to lug around. I will post picks once I have it all together. With this case, that hub and my touch screen stylus (link), I think I have a laptop replacement. Well maybe not a full replacement, but a travel partner that can do everything I need it to while I am out and about...

My case was bigger than the tab so it would slide out a bit. Also I was worried of the flap holding it back coming in and opening the case and my tab coming out.
So I bought some of those velcro stickers (placed on top of some carbon fiber vinyl to protect the tablet) and voila, the tablet stays in place and can be easily taken off.
Just a tip if you want to secure the tablet a bit more

Here is a pic of the Iconia in the GTablet keyboard case. As with everyone else, I have to use a hub in order to get the keyboard to work.
It is a bit larger in dimension than the Iconia, but I found that the Iconia in the acer case fits like a glove.

Got it. Fits well except the power/sleep button was covered by one of the thicker leather corner holds. I had to flip it and now its covered by the thinner elastic corner hold, but is accessible

i just ordered the senyx leather case (for the Kindle DX) from amazon. they updated their description to include "A500 compatibility" hehe.
We'll see how it goes. Probably going to return the Acer OEM case today back to staples. not a big fan of it.

Stylus for A500?

Has anyone done testing with a stylus for the A500? If so, what were your thoughts?
I'd like something I can use to either draw quick sketches for photo ideas, or something I can use to jot a quick note here and there (of course, I'd probably need an app that supports handwriting, but those may come in time).
I purchased a Targus stylus today. Having come from the old pre-capacitive days when the stylus is hard, the new stylus' seemed a little odd but I must say the control is very good. Pin point accuracy - excellent for drawing.

I also got the Targus stylus a week or so ago; and it does works well.. I saw another stylus somewhere online that is supposed to give you even finer control and allow you to actually see exactly where the stylus is touching the screen, but now I can't find where I saw it. I'm thinking about giving the new one a shot too, if I can find it again. ;-)

I think you're referring to this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/DAGi-Stylus-P10...?pt=US_Tablet_Accessories&hash=item41582701ff
I have one and it works very well in general. The only issue is getting it at the right angle with the screen - particularly if you have the screen at an angle. But I like it better than the rubber tipped ones.
I bought the Boxwave stylus. I like it a lot. However it doesn't always catch it, sometimes it clicks on a screen I don't want or am scrolling through. But other than that, I am very happy with it for detailed work. My fingers get sweaty on occasion and I have a hard time using the screen when they are like that. So the stylus is a nice addition to have, especially if you don't like fingerprints.
I do wonder if it will somehow mess up the screen though later on.
Just curious, is there any way to get hand writing recognition to work? So for instance, if I bought one of these stylus's, would I be able to use it and forgo the need for an on screen keyboard?

I'm using flexT9 app which has peninput, but its not perfect, the capacitive stylus is more like big stick then a pen
Can anyone recommend a stylus that's got more of a penpoint tip rather than something the size of a finger?
With a capacitive screen I don't think something like this exists. Although I was in a meeting today with somebody taking notes on an I pad, not sure how they were doing that.
I own this stylus and I really like it. This is the only stylus I have used so I cannot compare it to anything.

I got word yesterday that Acer is releasing one specifically for the A500. I will get more information and keep everyone posted.
I'm getting behind on everything as I had to go out of town for a few days on a business trip. Also, prototype custom Iconia case ships to me today for a review and should be available stateside after the 26th. It's similar to the FUSE.
I also use a Targus stylus for iPad as it was called.
Has a soft rubber tip, but works great on my device.
I have a griffin made for the Ipad but works on all my Android touch screens

I ve found this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Car-Holder-...384063?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f0a28c67f the seller says its for x5
One of the many reasons I wish manufacturers would've standardised on a MiniUSB connector instead of a MicroUSB connector, is the fact that the MiniUSB slots in effortlessly so is ideal for a docking station - the MicroUSB on the other hand is a pain in the backside to both slide in and slide out. Strangely, there's very little difference in the external size of the connector itself, so there's really no (as far as I can see) advantage in using MicroUSB.
That being said... Unless Huawei release their own U8800-specific dock or the 'phone itself becomes enormously popular, I doubt there'll ever be a proper dock available for it. By "proper" I mean one that you can just throw the 'phone at, and it'll (by virtue of the form-specific design) slot straight into its connector - this is the situation I have with the after-market dock I got for my HTC TouchPro.
It looks like that for the U8800, we'll have to make do with a "universal" dock. The one sebgus mentioned is about as good as it gets, but at around AUD$60 plus postage, it's a painful proposition for something which isn't even purpose-built.
By the looks of it, the Google Nexus One dock might fit the bill, but frankly I couldn't be bothered tracking down the dimensions (hey, it's nearly 2:30am here!). However... Even if the dimensions (width and thickness) of the 'phone were the same, there'd still be the U8800's ultra-curved end to consider - it may well slot into the dock perfectly but then want to overbalance to one side or the other. This however might be cured with some styrene wedged/glued into the corners to keep the 'phone upright?
The only other option would be to go the genuinely universal route, but then you're just getting a 'phone holder - and that's not what a dock's all about.
I'll do some more investigation into this thought tomorrow after I've had a few hours' sleep.
Edit: Bugger the sleep! Just looked up the dimensions, and it seems it might work...
U8800: 62mm (W) x 11.6mm (D)
Nexus One: 59.8mm (W) x 11.5mm (D)
Depending on the depth of the resting recess, the U8800's extra width may actually counteract its curved bottom edge.
Does anyone here have access to a shop which sells Nexus One docks, in which they can try to fit their U8800? They're cheap enough from eBay (around AUD$14), but it'd be far more prudent to try it out before parting with your cash.
The Nexus One docks wont fit, because the microUSB plug points in "wrong direction".

I wonder how "butcherable" they'd be, to allow the plug to be re-mounted the other way 'round?

Oddly enough, the HTC Sensation dock works fine, my dad has one and every now and then I slip my phone into it. It's not a flush fit, but it does the job

If you need a quick dock solution without charging you can use the case from an old mini DV tape case.
Just open up the case, the X5 fits pretty well. If you're brave enough you might even try gluing a charging cable on the bottom, I tried but the super glue didn't really hold well.

Keyboard/Case Combination Uk

Has anyone found a decent keyboard/case combination within the Uk? I'd like something that has the keyboard built into a leather style flip case. I had one (bluetooth leather flip case) for my iPad which was superb but the Iconia is a little too long for it
There are some on Amazon & Ebay, but people have reported in here that you need a USB hub to get the keyboard to work, which for me makes it useless. I don't want to have to lug around even more stuff!
The case also isn't a perfect fit.
Hi,
No personal experience but you might like the keyboard/case combination on eBay (search for object ID 160610349685 - Sorry I am not allowed to post hyperlinks yet)

re Case/Keyboard
hi - i have ordered one so will let you know my thoughts once it arrives - not expecting to much but again it may okay for light use in the office and i will use my other case for normal wear and tear protection.
I own that case or something amazing close to it. The reports of needing a USB hub to get the keyboard to work are accurate. I ending up buying a L shaped 4 port hub, it sticks out of the case but allows me to have a mouse and a usb stick plugged in at the same time.
My hope is that once 3.1 drops I can loose the hub, but I am not holding out to much hope.

does anyone actually own this one and can they report if it actually works, functionality, etc.
Thank you!
i own one of this, i like the case a lot, it looks stylish and it's very good for note taking, i also use a bluetooth mouse for easy access, the keyboard is made for windows (it has windows key) and havent found a way to bind the back action with any key, most keys works as intended, even the menu key (next to alt gr), but it seems tha honeycomb is not made to be used with just keyboard, you need to use the touch screen or a mouse. the case weigth a little bit less as tablet, has 3 magnets (one for close, one to secure the back support, and other to hold the latch while you use it), overall i think its a great case for the tablet, would like a more "honeycomb" oriented keyboard like the acer official, but for most things this just works.
I use it with dexter's P1 Rom, cause i coudn't make it work with any other rom, no even P2, virtous or stock 3.01.

Thanks. I might try this one out. For $19 it is an inexpensive risk I think.
this is cheap as I am finding keyboards for $69.00. why so cheap that always makes me flinch like it is not to be believed.
what do you think...
just looks to dog gone cheap!
the only bad thing i see here, is that there is no protection for the screen, when you close the case, the screen is in contact with the keyboard. But the idea is good, transform the tab into something near the transformer from asus for 10 time cheaper ^^
can someone test it please
I have one on order. Should arrive this week sometime hopefully. Will report back on how it works with my Acer tablet
I've ordered one of these as well should do the job short term. Worth the money compared to what some of the other cases are charging. Now that 3.1 has been released hopefully we'll see a lot more bluetooth/keyboard case combinations for this tablet as it seems it 'wasn't completely compatible' with certain hardware prior to this update. Needless to say it worked fine with my wife's ipad 2 bluetooth case just unfortunate that i couldn't jam my iconia into one of them! I think if there's not a bluetooth keyboard/folio case combo available soon I'm going to buy a bunch of the bluetooth keyboards a bunch of the leather folio cases for the iconia and a big tube of superglue and start my own case company!!
well the keyboard case i orderd arrived this morning, so it was a quick flash back out of the Galaxy ROM so i can plug the usb in. Using it to type this up.
sorry no photos but those in the advert are about correct, the only one missing is the kick stand.
The Case Quality is adequate, but considering what it costs then i can not expet too much. Stiching is okay and reasonably tidy, get the feeling it will fray though if rubbed a bit hard. USB cable is more than adequate. There are no cutouts for Camera, speakers etc but then i dont need that when i am using it as an office tool.
Drain on the battery for the USB power is noticeable but then i suspect that is the same for most plugins. Not too much of the plastic smell so that was okay.
The case closure is held in place with a small magnet, just about strong enough for the job. The kick stand is also held flat to the case when not in use by a magnet which is a nice touch. The angle of the screen with the stand is fine for me
The keys themselves give just enough play, Typing is for me okay as i dont have the largest hands in the world but if you are wide fingered then it may a little tight.
the right hand Shift and Enter keys a little to close for me, i keep hitting the Enter key by mistake. Obviously the function keys etc have no purpose.
The real problem lies in the fitting of the Acer into the case - the lugs that are supposed to hold it are about 3-5mm too large so the acer is very loose. it wont fall out forward or to the sides but as there is no lug on the top, turn the case around without the clasp closed and it will definitely be on the floor. i am sure i can find a remedy for this that would allow me use the case with a greater feeling of security.
on the whole a useable case if the security can be sorted for those needing to spend some time at the keyboard, but probably not your long term day in - day out case. Mine will probably end up on my desk and i will slip the acer in when i wnat to use it and back to something else for mormal use.
Hope that helps
ps. typed this in a notes program as i find the browser is very laggy when trying totype directly in to it.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160610349685&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
GREAT FEEDBACK - thank you. I have the same one coming - should arrive next week.
For $19 - your review is very encouraging.
To use it for any normal activity you Need to figure out a way of not letting it slip out of the top. Some of the material you use on the dashboard of the car to stop your phone etc slipping might well do the trick . Probably easier and cleaner than some other methods I might try. But if it is a slip in and type , slip it out and walk away use, then it meets that criteria faily well.
Let me know your thoughts when you get it

I think you will be really happy. I have been using mine constantly since it arrived. Makes using the tablet much easier and far quicker when typing. Really adds a lot to the overall unit as a whole.
Just received mine in the post. So far looks very nice but need to wait until I can get home so I can test it with my Iconia! Will post pics and thoughts later and a link to the product.

Recommended cases?

I dropped my tablet yesterday while it was inside a laptop slipcase onto concrete. Luckily, I got away with a small chip in the corner instead of full on case warping like I've been hearing. Anyway, I figure it's about time I look into a nice case with stand support. What do you guys recommend?
Well, i bought the official acer stand case. I had a rebate card so it was only 20 bucks. I may go back and get a netbook bag because it was only 10 bucks.

So do you like the build quality of it? I was looking at that, but I really want to protect the corners of the tablet now.

This case looks very interesting. I found a few more photos of it that were not shown in the eBay listing.

Does anyone have any experience with this case?
Don't buy the official Acer folio. I did, even after reading the crappy reviews (didn't want to wait for something else), and regret it. Crappy quality, the fit loosens so the tab tends to slide out, it covers the microphone, etc.
The list goes on and on.
I am waiting to buy this:

Hi,
I just got this bundle delivered for under € 10 ...
http://cgi.benl.ebay.be/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270793202679
The stylus pen is nice imho, keeps the screen clean
All connectors nicely accessible apart from the MicroSD ...
I also have to original Acer one, I like it, but it seems to pick up a lot of dust, anyone having the same experience?
Thanks, Marcher

I dropped my tablet yesterday while it was inside a laptop slipcase onto concrete. Luckily, I got away with a small chip in the corner instead of full on case warping like I've been hearing. Anyway, I figure it's about time I look into a nice case with stand support. What do you guys recommend?

try this one (got it from Amazon)
rooCASE Slim-Fit (Black) Folio Case Cover with Multi Adjustable Viewing Angles for Acer Iconia Tab A500 10.1-Inch Android Tablet Wi-Fi $26.98
Just got my tpdgear leather case in today. Its great so far. All the ports are easy to access. There is no hinderance. Speakers are tucked away until you prop up the unit. When its closed, it feels like a hefty notepad. The flap is secured with an elastic bad. It feels like an executive notepad when closed tbh. In landscape mode, it has three angles. Good for typing and viewing videos. My only grip is that it extra bulk when in portrait but it can't be help with all these folio style cases.
I've uses the hard plastic version on my friend"s xoom and I like tdpgears much more. Feels better, softer and not eggshell like. I assume its better if ever dropped because its softer. Got it for 30 on eBay.

Just unboxed my rooCASE/blueREX slim.
To anyone considering the Acer case, GET THIS INSTEAD.
Looks nicer, feels nicer, and the cover actually stays closed. And cheaper.
Due to the original Acer case having a more wrap around fit (rooCASE is sort of a clip-on. See pics and you will understand), I think it might give better edge protection against drops, but if you are worried about that, get the non-slim version.

What Bluetooth Keyboard Folios/Cases work with Acer Iconia A500?

So I have one of the USB keyboards and it works great, but takes up the port. There can be found here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1175316
I am honestly happy with that one BUT
1) I am wondering if there is a bluetooth keyboard folio/case yet for the Iconia Tab so the port is not taken
2) If there is an Acer branded keyboard so all of the keys will work with the specific tablet
3) do the Apple and Xoom bluetooth keyboard folio/case work with the Acer?
month later - anything?
thought I would bump this thread. Is there ANY Bluetooth keyboard folios / cases that works with the Acer yet???
I don't think that the xoom bluetooth shouldn't have any problems, because it's both Android and bluetooth.
I wouldn't buy apple's keyboard before you can go into a store and ask if you can try it (because it can have a security handshake with other apple hardware)
I'm looking for a case that can hold a keyboard and tablet in one, but havn't found one for the Acer just yes (if you find one, let me know)
Xoom keyboard does work and there is a keyboard that Acer makes, just google it .
But I haven't seen any bluetooth cases yet.
Here is one I am considering: http://amzn.to/xJLQIO
Reviews on it are a little hard to go by, since the only reviewers so far are Xoom or Thrive users, and I'm not sure how the dimensions compare.
The mounting solution is rather interesting. It comes with 2 different sizes of rubber pieces that slide over the corners of the tablet, then Velcro to the inside of the folio. With our tablets being a bit on the heavy side, I'm not sure how well or long that would hold.
One thing I like about this one over the USB one mentioned in the OP (aside from it leaving the port open) is that this is a free standing case that looks like it could sit on your lap fairly easy, whereas the other one has that narrow easel stand which requires that it sit on a flat surface.
I'm still torn between them. If I had the cash, I'd just buy them both and return the one I don't like but that's not really an option, so I'll just hope someone else on here has tried this case.
There is an acer A500 specific keyboard. I use it and it works well. It has quick access keys for swapping apps and such straight from the keyboard. Not sure about a folio case though. I just use a laptop sleeve to carry everything and a hipstreet tablet stand to keep the tablet up.
I use a BT keyboard designed for the HP Touchpad and it works great

I bought the Kensington and it is GREAT. It is the only case i use with my Acer now. The keyboard is really nice, no lag and the entire thing is first class.
this is the best android-buttoned keyboard (IMHO) that i have found. probably gonna get it when i have some leftover cash. has anyone here tried it with our tab?

The keyboard in the Kensington FOLIO KEYBOARD CASE is almost exactly the same as that sony one, and you get the full case/cover.
The wireless keyboard in the Kensington folio is just about the best wireless keyboard I have purchased to date, and you get the case with it. Can use with or without the case.
well, i'm not really into the folios, and the kingston doesn't seem to have the android specific keys like the sony....

what do you mean? all of the keys work with Android perfectly??
if you look at the one i linked to, it has dedicated keys for back, home, multitask, menu, and search. the "android buttons".
the picture quality of the kingston wasn't that great but it didn't look like it had the dedicated android keys to me...

the Kensignton one is NOT a cheap overseas one - it is much nicer
Check out this page on their website for info, videos, etc -
http://www.kensington.com/kensingto...niversal-bt-keyboard-case-for-10-tablets.aspx
This is their brand new one that looks amazing -
http://www.kensington.com/kensingto...pert-folio-keyboard-for-android®-tablets.aspx
I DID NOT buy direct from them as I found them much cheaper elsewhere
i said PICTURE quality was not that great. kingston is a good brand, i've bought their products before.
perhaps you could take a picture of your kingston's keyboard so we can see what the key layout is? i can't find a good pic online.
