keyboard attachment in tablet mode?

hi all...1st post i believe....
i am interested in this device with some hesitations as with most upscale pda-phones, one cannot go down to the store and play with one so until one can do that , he just makes templates and pretends!
well, i did previously have the i-mate jasjar and loved it, and especially the form factor, which still has me thinking if an htc omni is waiting around the corner...giving time to sell a bunch of advantages first, before the launch, but i digress.
the actual question is whether the keyboard attaches magnetically to the back of the device when using it in tablet mode, so it is in essence always with you and there is no need to remember where you may have put it when using in the tablet mode.
2nd question for you users is if the joystick is appropriately functional to use one handed...at least until the device weighs you down.

On mine, the x7500/Advantage, the keyboard does magnetically attach but it's very weak and slides all over the place. I just keep my device in the case because I've learned that if the case is not protecting the device, the device gets scratched up. Since I keep it in the case, when I do use it in "tablet mode" I just bend the keyboard part of the case behind the main unit and all is well. Hope this answers your question #1. An alternative is to utilize a full screen keyboard and eliminate the use of the hardware keyboard alltogether.
I don't really use the joystick much. I use a combination of Microsoft Voice Command and when I need to browse I use the stylus.

I don't know where you are based but my local T-mobile store (in London) was happy for me to play with an Ameo for quite a while (presumably because they get a hefty commission). That may apply elsewhere.

I too came from a Universal and think the Ameo's great (even more so now I have Salling Clicker!). The Omni keeps on coming and going. Without wishing to be profane - there are other options if you want to keep the Uni format (Imate Ultimate 7150, Toshiba G900 etc)

No. I tend to leave the keyboard at home or in the case.

It is perfectly positioned for your left thumb in landscape or portrait mode. And the Ameo is not that heavy!

i am in ann arbor , michigan, USA and t-mobile does not have it available here for "playing"......yet?!?!
i guess the answer to the kb attaching to the back of the device when using in tablet mode is that it does but slides off?, meaning it was not meant to attach or it is faulty, bc from what i see/hear about the magnet it is supposed to be quite strong.
i hesitate to wait for the i-mate ultimate bc in photos it appears "cheap" looking and have found the htc devices are of good, sound durable make, and i have had cheaper devices that are lighter but i believe the sacrifice of durability and incr weight is worth it, ie., the jasjar.
i did not know the G900 was a convertible pda-phone....i will check on it and google "salling clicker", as i have not heard of that either!
for me using the virtual kb defeats the purpose of the form factor as i love to have the device sitting on my bedside table in laptop or reverse laptop mode for viewing and the keyboard acts as the stand/cradle...i guess the advantage could NOT be used in reverse laptop mode as i think of it?!
also, for me the idea of protecting the large screen with the keyboard is a must at all times when stored away.

Shame there's no unit to play with. I've never understood why it is that some companies expect customers to part with large amounts of money on things like this without being able to try them first. Good luck on that.
The magnet is strong - but only on the front. I have never heard that it was supposed to be usable on the rear. That suprises me a little as suerly that would require some extra shielding??
I agree re HTC phones. I am, however, just about to send my third Universal back to be repaired.
The problem with the trion is that it didn't really add anything over the Uni.
As to protecting the screen - a good screen protector is obviously a must. I have also fitted a body shield.

i'm still caught in that "love the small compact size, but love that large vga screen even better", dilemma...until a fold out screen is reality i have to choose one over the other.
i am a doctor and like to have my device in my pocket all the time to use as my pda-medical software/internet device, camera for lesions, email, etc that is work related, but also use it for mp3 player for the commute home, gps and of course phone. i had the jasjar for about a year but the camera is abysmal and so i had a separate canon camera in the other pocket and it did weigh me down and got hot and uncomfortable in my pockets with 2 devices so i would end up leaving the jasjar on my desk and not using it for work at all!
the trions macro mode camera is quite good for up close photos for documentation and small enough to be comfortable in my pocket, but now i find i need more memory as the micro sd is full at 2 gb w/ music, photos and medical programs and photos, and i do miss the jasjars vga screen and form factor, sooooooooooooooooo, alas the advantage, it would solve the camera, space and screen problems and without the keyboard attached it might be small enough to be in the front pant pocket, but i have to try to see for certain.
i'll probably see if the omni surfaces before getting an advantage, unless i can get a good return policy to trial the advantage.
btw, i almost convinced my wife that my fujitsu 1510 was the same device as my fujitsu T4020 tablet until she heard me calling them different names!!!, i just slipped up!!

The BBC have just put a video up on the Tech section of the news website http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6711785.stm where they look at a Sony Ericsson G-sensor and also demonstrate the Advantage/Athena. I thought they would also mention the g-sensor on that, but they appear to only be interested in the deficiencies in the magnetic attraction between the keyboard and screen. Is it as bad as is shown? I guess the whole idea isn't to walk around and hold the unit by the keyboard though.

The keyboard does not stock to the back is the unit. It would only to the front.
However, if you are like me in having discovered a far far better way of entering data, you would see the hardware keyboard as redundant and in fact much inferior method of input. I don't use the supplied keyboard even at home, let alone carry it with me.
I use TenGo software keyboard. It works in both QVGA and VGA mode, it is clever, there is virtually no learning curve, and typing is FAST with this magic.

Usable stylus for Hero

Hi All
My wife's recently got a Hero but she's found a problem with her long nails making typing difficult (capacitive screens don't work with fingernails!)
I've bought a couple of different types of iPhone stylus' but, though they do work, you have to really press quite [scarily] hard to make them register.
Can anyone recommend a stylus that works smoothly and without too much pressure?

Not yet. I was going to try a Pogo stylus but then found a review that suggests that it may be no different than the other stylus' I've bought. I can actually believe this because I've now managed to test the stylus' I've bought on an actual iPhone and they work far, far better than on the Hero
...not sure where to go from here.

The best stylus I have ever used is the papermate flexgrip elite M. They come in different colors and double as a pen which is what they really are. I recommend highly. I change color with the outfit I'm wearing. I'm in IT Networking so I always keep one in my shirt pocket. My job gives them out. Once you start using them you wont be able to go back to a regular stylus. I can't. You want to see it with the cap on the pen side, not the clip side. I use the small stylus side.

What Bluetooth Keyboard Folios/Cases work with Acer Iconia A500?

I am honestly happy with that one BUT
1) I am wondering if there is a bluetooth keyboard folio/case yet for the Iconia Tab so the port is not taken
2) If there is an Acer branded keyboard so all of the keys will work with the specific tablet
3) do the Apple and Xoom bluetooth keyboard folio/case work with the Acer?

I don't think that the xoom bluetooth shouldn't have any problems, because it's both Android and bluetooth.
I wouldn't buy apple's keyboard before you can go into a store and ask if you can try it (because it can have a security handshake with other apple hardware)

Xoom keyboard does work and there is a keyboard that Acer makes, just google it .

The mounting solution is rather interesting. It comes with 2 different sizes of rubber pieces that slide over the corners of the tablet, then Velcro to the inside of the folio. With our tablets being a bit on the heavy side, I'm not sure how well or long that would hold.
One thing I like about this one over the USB one mentioned in the OP (aside from it leaving the port open) is that this is a free standing case that looks like it could sit on your lap fairly easy, whereas the other one has that narrow easel stand which requires that it sit on a flat surface.
I'm still torn between them. If I had the cash, I'd just buy them both and return the one I don't like but that's not really an option, so I'll just hope someone else on here has tried this case.

There is an acer A500 specific keyboard. I use it and it works well. It has quick access keys for swapping apps and such straight from the keyboard. Not sure about a folio case though. I just use a laptop sleeve to carry everything and a hipstreet tablet stand to keep the tablet up.

I use a BT keyboard designed for the HP Touchpad and it works great

I bought the Kensington and it is GREAT. It is the only case i use with my Acer now. The keyboard is really nice, no lag and the entire thing is first class.

this is the best android-buttoned keyboard (IMHO) that i have found. probably gonna get it when i have some leftover cash. has anyone here tried it with our tab?

The keyboard in the Kensington FOLIO KEYBOARD CASE is almost exactly the same as that sony one, and you get the full case/cover.
The wireless keyboard in the Kensington folio is just about the best wireless keyboard I have purchased to date, and you get the case with it. Can use with or without the case.

well, i'm not really into the folios, and the kingston doesn't seem to have the android specific keys like the sony....

what do you mean? all of the keys work with Android perfectly??

if you look at the one i linked to, it has dedicated keys for back, home, multitask, menu, and search. the "android buttons".
the picture quality of the kingston wasn't that great but it didn't look like it had the dedicated android keys to me...

the Kensignton one is NOT a cheap overseas one - it is much nicer

Looking for preorders / donations

Hello everyone, recently picked up an acer a500 over the weekend and i have to admit i am in love with it, i have always thought that tablets were useless when i have an android phone but i have to admit, this thing has changed my mind, and the fact that it has full usb makes it even better, but I have been a little annoyed at the lack of a keyboard / laptop dock. After reading a couple of threads about what the dock connector does on the tab I have decided to fill the need for this adapter. What i have planned includes the following.
Definite features are:
Full Keyboard
Charging ability
Extra usb ports
Possible features are:
Built in harddrive and OR memory card reader
Built in battery (obviously a little expensive to add so may be not possible)
Built in trackpad to use as a mouse.
I am just trying to see how many people would be interested in this and what they would be willing to pay for this. I would love to provide an adapter for the community since acer didn't make one, I also have a couple of other questions as well, if i made two models, one with a battery built in and one without how much more would you be willing to pay for an extra battery, also this would be a fordable dock meaning you could fold it together to carry like a normal laptop.
I look forward to hearing some responses, i hope to be able to offer this for about $100 or less however the more features obviously the more expensive it will be to implement.

if its possible, i'd love to buy one!

Awesome, I plan to have a prototype made by the weekend, i think the material of choice is going to be wood since it's light weight, easy to manipulate and also sturdy and it doesn't conduct electricity

once i see a working prototype, then id preorder, until then all your doing is fishing for donations, ive been lurking xda for quite some time and usually people with so few post and not a recognized developer are just spewing flights of fancy and never actually create anything, though if im wrong, prove me wrong and ill be the first to not only apologize but preorder one. not trying to be a d*ck just saying how it usually goes..

No worries I understand completely, once I have a prototype done then and only then will I accept any orders or donations, should have made that more clear beforehand sorry about that, right now I'm just judging the interest of the community for such a product.

How will you be connecting this? AFAIK, the full pinouts and capabilities of the dock connector are not known...

Using my volt meter and some old fashion trial and error, I'm pretty confident in my abilities just need to actually get started on development, going today to look into what my supplies are going to cost.

A voltmeter isn't anywhere near enough... You might want to check out this thread first.

I know I will need more than a voltmeter, and yes i read that before i decided to embark on this project. This is where trial and error will come in, from a usb standpoint since there is an apparent lack of usb support through the dock this will be circumvented by having a small plugin to the usb host port in order to connect the planned additional usb devices in the dock.

The dock connector doesn't have the required pins for USB, or really anything other than charging.

any prototypes up? the idea of the keyboard dock extra battery and usb mouse sounds like bliss

It could be some sort of variation of the keyboard that Acer already made for this tablet. Perhaps modifying it so that you can put the dock in to charge and have the input device (in this case the keyboard) connect via bluetooth. Having the touchpad for a mouse is a different story though.

I'd rather use USB for a mouse using a touch pad would not be so good with onlive

Be cautions with Trial and error on a mobile device . there electronics will not be forgiving any type of over voltage or short circuits . And you could very well be shopping for a new ICONIA .
To me a dock for a hand held tablet is counter productive . PEOPLE BUY A NETBOOK.its faster more power more storage more battery . LESS MONEY.
Ok the above is my opinion only I have a 11.6 inch hp notebook with the new multi core amd fusion cpu i get unbelievable battery life. Near that of my iconia .
with a full keyboard and track pad 1.2 tb hard drive
So good luck . by the way if you get the connectors and hardware worked out make the case out of lexon or carbon fiber both easy to work with and mold to any shape . acrylic works well also..

Acer has not made a keyboard that uses the dock for this tablet. You may be thinking of the W500 keyboard, or of a USB keyboard.
To be honest, I don't see this going anywhere. OP, I'd suggest you find out how to get USB or Keyboard off of that connector before asking for preorders.
To anyone else, I'd suggest you just keep looking. Not to be rude or mean to him, but the OP seems to be rather noobish, and I think your money would most likely be better spent elsewhere, or at least held onto until there's some sort of result or breakthrough.
Also, the OP only having 9 posts throws up a red flag to me.

Shield type setup for tegra note

Bought one of these the other day, hoping to modify the bracket to fit, however to my surprise if you have the genuine slide cover you can fold it such a way it actually holds and works with no modding!! the silver plastic bar does flex but easily returns to its straight form when taken off. Only downside is you couldn't hold it for ages it is heavy.
just an idea

can you use it the over way around, so that the silver bar is on top and not gets pushed like this?

afraid not as the position makes the screen hang over the joy pad. you could adjust the pad so it grips more of the front bezel that would solve it. Hasn't done any damage to this one.

Is that the g910 gamepad? I tried that one and while it seemed nice for the price, it was a pain to connect for me. Many times I had to reboot the tablet, and the controller, turn bluetooth off and on, just to get them to talk to each other. I sent it back and bought a moga power pro. It works very well.

Yes it is, just wanted something cheap as they get knocked about anyway. Looks like they updated it as the D pad is not the standard XBOX360 one anymore, it connected straight away with dead trigger and nova. I am guessing build quality and battery life is nowhere near a moga, cheap though.

Ya, I really wanted to like mine. It overall worked ok, I updated the firmware and did everything by the book, but any time I would turn it off, then try to use it later, I had to jump through hoops most of the time to get it to work.
I first ordered it straight from geekbuying for $27 or so, but after a month and a half waiting, I finally canceled that order and picked it up from Amazon, also from geekbuying, but out of Amazon's warehouse. I paid about $32 or so that time. When I decided it wasn't good enough really, I found the moga power pro (newest one) on Amazon's marketplace for $50 I figured it was only about $17 more to get the real thing.
Overall I don't regret sending the g910 back and getting the moga. It has worked flawlessly so far. Plus the app is pretty nice too.
I hope it works out for you, the reviews were really good, that is why I went with that one first.

Although using the cover case folded as a means to grip the tegra worked, it wasn't very secure and could easily flip forward. So I opened up the game controller, changed the analog sticks as my dog manage to chew one off. In doing so I was able to look at the mechanism for the phone grip part, the arm is far too short to allow a 7inch tablet, however using an old piece of plastic, cutting it down to length and adapting it to extend the original arm it is possible now to fit the tegra securely with or without the case cover, the spring loaded grip works just as well as the original.
