Network problem????? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got a nook color from someone and they wiped all their data so its like out of the box. I connected it to my wifi blah blah blah.... then it says to pres continue setup.... it says registering your device..... network problem. "A network-related error occured. You may have lost conectivity to the wireless network. Press continue and we'll try to test your connection."
Only there is no problem with my wifi. This Nook Color didn't come with instructions.... so do I have to register it or is it screwed?
Thanks in advance
Dave

It's not just you. It's a wide spread issue, apparently BN's servers crashed.
Earlier I got an authorization issue message and then my NC wiped itself. Now it's just getting an error message during the registration part of the set up. Hopefully its not long til they get the services back up.

It also says .... Mac address:58.6 blah blah blah and I dont have a mac. Could that be from the previous owner or is it just that the BN site i down?

A MAC Address is a bit like a name tag to you and I - a MAC Address just shows that a device is connected to the Wi-Fi network
For example, if you take the battery out of a BlackBerry you will notice the FCC label with manufacturer, model number etc... You will also have amongst the Serial Number is the MAC Address
It's just an identification tag for the network

oh cool..... So I just have o wait for bn site to get back up? because I cant get past the registation part. I t wont even get to the screen to sign in..... it just keep going to the "select your wireles network". between step 3 and 4 of etup process

Im having the same problem all the way here in Scotland, UK so i can definitely say you are not alone with this problem!! And im relieved to see its a B&N issue -
I recently restored my NookColor back from deeperblue's excellent port of the Android 3.0 Honeycomb preview ROM to stock so i can see how B&N's Froyo update fares, and i thought the stock restore stuffed it big time!!

Thank god! I'm just glad I didn't buy a borked Nook Color.

I'm glad the it's not my problem.. however a problem i do have that i don't think is related to the network is that when i try to sign on my account during the initial setup it says something like it's having problems registering the device.. blah blah.. call support and only gives me an option to power down. Can anyone help me with this? Trying to get it back to normal as this isn't mine and i'm rooting it for someone.. i just need it to register the device and so i can get nook books on the device.

thats the same exact problem I'm having. It wont go past the register screen

If you figure it out, let me know.. i'm in need to fix that within 5 hours.. It just sucks because i had android working on it and everything and the only thing that didn't work was the B&N account and registering the device.

Were you rooted? Maybe I bought a rooted device and its BORKED!

Here's hoping its not something like the recent PSN "network problem."

I have been facing the same issue since afternoon. Not sure if it is purely a registration issue or something has been screwed up in B&N database and I need to call it in. In any case there is a way to bypass the registration altogether. This is temporary solution till the registration is completed ow you wont have access to the B&N store etc.
When you get to the part where there is picture of Kate and the video tutorial, hold the vol up button and touch the bottom left part of screen and then the bottom right. This will get you to factory mode. Click the factory button and there is button called skip OOBE (out of box experience). This will get you directly to the home screen bypassing registration. You can go to setting and set up your wifi etc.

[HOW-TO]Bypass google activation on Android devices

Ever got stuck on the "touch the Android" screen when you don't have network & cannot skip the registration?
Well, there is a simple solution:
Press all 4 corners of the screen one after the other clockwise, and TADA - you're on your home screen.
Start from the top left corner, then top right, bottom right, and then bottom left. Will work ONLY in this order on the myTouch3G.
This was successfully tried on both myTouch3G and Verizon Droid.
Edit: Tried it on a stock G1 running cupcake and it did not work.
Looking for someone with G1 running donut to test and check if it works.
how do you touch the corner without touching the select language and emergency call??
I agree, and I wish it were that simple........... Doesn't seem to work on the G1 at least.
This needs more testing.
If this simple method works that would really rock.
I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough - attached a picture that explains exactly where to press.
This worked on a Droid & myTouch3G. I will check on G1 & Cliq next time I'm in one of the T-Mobile stores.
Please check and validate it works for the G1.

Where is sort-of clear, How needs clarification.
Tried it like the picture. Lets try a little more detail... Why does the droid have a square around it and the number 1?? Is the droid the first touch and then it's #1 again in the upper right corner and so-on? Are we talking about holding each one down as you press the next, Or just one at a time?? Are you holding down the droid and then pressing each corner individually and letting them go?
I think I tried all possible combo's with no luck.
again, my bad.
Press only the 4 corners. Don't touch the Android. I was using that photo that I found on the net and didn't think it will just be more confusing.
Just press the corners according to the order of the red numbers.
This is the method used by store reps to bypass activation in order to give a demo of the device.
Update:Just wiped my phone and tried it again, and it works.
Please try according to the attached pic.
Just tried it. It works. Took a couple of tries, though.

On my G1
Tried it MANY times. Fast, slow, far from edges, close to edges, fingers, thumbs, after a fresh reboot, holding down each one as I press the next, standing on my head while I whistle dixie, hopping on one leg, etc. NOTHING
worked fine on my white htc magic with eclair running
nice one no real use to me but it works
ahhhhhhh

i cant seem to get it to work on my g1 either
I've tested it on a stock G1 running cupcake, and it did not work. It does work on myTouch & Droid.
Would appreciate it if someone with a G1 running donut will try it as well to rule out the build issue (1.5 vs 1.6).

[Q] Registration Error : Sorry we're having trouble setting up...

Hi all,
i just bought a Nook color from a Ebay Guy.
He told me he rooted the nook color, and use a reset factory before sell me the nook. and now the product is new.
I Power On the nook color, choice my wifi connection = > OK
But i can't register ... and use the nook color :'(
i write my informations :
name/firstname, email and password, and i have a message :
"sorry we re having trouble setting up your nook color. Please shutdown the device and try again."
After reading some posts, i think that this guy registered his account, and now it will be impossible for me to use the Nook color ?
I don t know his NC mail/password ...
If someone can help me, thx by advance.
I saw that when I was typing the wrong account password. After you fail to login a few a times it just defaults to that even you it is a separate attempt to register.
Try going into /setting/device info/erase and deregister the device. or poweron while holping volume and home button at the same time.
If that does not work you can try doing a full reset. That's where you boot the device and a few seconds after the N logo appears you hold the power button to power it off and then reboot it. Do that 8 times and then during the boot process it will reflash the device.
Then do the deregister or power+vol up+home.
I too have this "sorry we're having trouble setting up your nookcolor. please shutdown and try again" message
I just bought this nook it was sealed and I got this message after first boot I have tried the 8x reboot trick, and the 3 finger salute to reset it but every time i try it fails to register
Help?
EDIT: When I say it fails to register...it doesnt even give me a chance to input my bn account info...
Bump. Has anyone heard of anyone else having this registration issue at all? Not a major deal for me as I have all my books backed up on my computer and I think I can just load them on the SD card and read them, but I won't be able to buy any from BN using the nc...

There is a method of getting around the screen that works its on the nookdev site:
http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Factory_Mode/Skip_Out_of_Box_Experiance
When "tapping" the power button i did a little more of a 1 second press for it to work for me. also wait a second before hitting the corners. then you get to the normal screen.
Hope this helps
Turned out an error on my part.
Had skipped the all important boot with the "n" key and "Power"
Consider it step 2 of the reset "8 failed boot attempts"

Thank you very much for this. I got the same error and was wondering if it is possible to skip it. It took me about 10 tries to get the right timing but I was able to skip OOBE. I don't plan to use BN service anyway.
I am having the same issue on my backup nook. It was registered once. I auto-nootered it. Then wiped it because of crashing problems. I did 8 failed boots wipe, then the "N" + Power wipe. Now it will not register. I used the bypass OOBE steps and can use the Nook now, but I need to register it. Could there be a hardware issue? I called B&N last night. They placed a ticket, but had no other solutions.
Edit: Issue resolved. I called B&N support again and informed them that I already had a ticket and tried both of the reset steps. They informed me that I had a failed deregistration attempt of the Nook. They manually deregistered the device and I was able to login.
Anyone want to sticky this?
Registration Issue
I had the exact issue described here yesterday and had to call B&N for help. I made the mistake of creating a SECOND B&N account from my NOOKcolor afer reimaging with autonooter. B&N does not allow you to have two email addresses/accounts registerd to one NOOK inorder to protect the content I would have downloaded with my first account. Once a conflict is detected, they remotley wipe and reset your device. F*cked up right?? I dont remember reading this warning in the instructions.. but in all fairness, I never did read them entirly.. The devise was wiped as soon as i opened the SHOP.
The B&N tech suppport rep was very helpful. Thanks to this article I was sure this was the issue. They loacated the second account/email address I registerd my nook to via serial number and deleted that account for me. The registration process still would not work so he had to register the device on their end. After, I used my original account/email info to complete the registration process successfully. He also could not confirm my waranty or somehting along those lines. I was concerned that he can see something posted to my account that voided my nook warantay because it was rooted. He said that I would be getting "updated" and because i purchased my device 14 days earlier, he extened my warantay for a year from today!! I imediatly noticed something was different. The wirless utility was now defaulting to "SHOW PASSWORD" when configuring WiFi and the text was noticeably different. Concerned but satisfied, I burned a new image with autonooter and proceeded to root. The Nook would not boot past the N logo screen. I tried several times but it would not boot and root. I wiped the devise to factory defaults once more and loaded autonooter with success. Everything seems to be back to normal and device if functioning flawlessly.
I hope this helps anyone who thought B&N just F'd them
I also bought the NookColor as a gift off eBay. The seller said it was "new," but that someone in his family may have used it briefly before they did a factory reset.
I took this at face value, but I didn't realize that B&N links each Nook to a secure account and that link is not affected by wiping the device whatsoever.
So, we got the "Sorry we're having trouble" error and no amount of fiddling on our end helped.
Finally, on my second call to technical support, I was told that my device (which they located in their system by serial number) was paired to someone not me. Therefore, that person would have to call them and authorize them to have their name unpaired from the Nook. They would under no circumstances proceed any further with just me.
Apparently, they wanted the name of the previous account holder / owner, the date of purchase and a credit card number associated with the account. Hopefully, I can get in contact with the eBay seller and he is willing and able to jump through these hoops. Otherwise, I may have just purchased a pretty expensive paper weight.

That would be so effed up if the seller doesnt help. Hopefully they will do what is right. But if you do end up with an expensive paperweight. Just flash CM7 to your nook and you will still have a fully functional tablet. Yes you loose the stock b&n experience. But you get so much more out of CM7 anyways.
Good luck!

Thanks Racks.
UPDATE: As of today, issue solved. Both the eBay seller and B&N got together and joined my B&N account to the Nook rather than the one that was already paired.
Joy!

Acer has a single pricing repair .The cost for this in the us.is.199.99 dollars. I have called them in the past. However I do not know about just fixing a bootloader issue. Something that they should give a way to the end user to do from there home.but then again they lock these devices to protect software rights of digital copyright and so on.
Call them but be honest as to what you done. They will figure it out anyway.
You can also contact sc2k here on this forum. He might be able to help you.

You interrupted the update...this is something you should never do when updating a devices firmware/bootloader and your tablet probably has an incomplete firmware/bootloader, as a result.
BTW: have you tried pressing VOL- and PWR, to load the recovery image: i mean if that would work at all, given your circumstances?

Nexus 4 Not Recognizing Touch Input (VIDEO)

So I got some bad news
There is an area on my Nexus 4 that receives no touch input. Either that, or it is extremely inconsistent. This is the section right about where the bottom row of icons are located, directly above the on-screen navigation buttons.
I tried installing this "fix" for touch sensitivity, but it did not fix the specific problem I am having. And I noticed this problem before I tried that fix, so it was not a result of that.
I am about to try a full system reset to see if that helps. Hopefully it will. I will post back if it does.
If I have to send it back to Google, what process would I need to go through to make sure they don't know I rooted? Just unroot? Or would I also have to lock the bootloader as well? And would a full system reset do all of that? Or do I need to go back and use the toolkit?
Here is a video I just shot showing the problem:
EDIT: And unfortunately a full reset just made it worse

I would definitely RMA that. It's clearly an issue. I just ran the same touch tests you did in the video and have none of those same problems. The screen recognizes my touch even at the very bottom of the screen where the nav bar starts.
As for unrooting/re-lockingt he bootloader, just use Wug's toolkit:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015469
This worked flawlessly for me to unroot and re-lock the bootloader of my first N4 before sending it back to them. The toolkit is very straight forward.

Just make sure you follow the step by step guide for installing the proper drivers and uninstalling rogue ones before trying to unroot/lock the bootloader. It is super easy just make sure you read all the instructions and follow them to a T. After doing that the toolkit will work perfectly for you moving forward. Even with your next N4. I used it again today to root my replacement N4.
I encountered a MAJOR problem!
I did the flash stock + unroot part and that worked fine. But I am completely stuck on the last part.
Now I need to lock the bootloader again. In order to do that, I have to have USB debugging turn on. The problem is that in order to turn it on, I have to get into the phone. But I am stuck on the initial phone setup! The only way to move past the stage I am stuck on is to click an arrow, but the arrow is in the dead zone and the dead zone just got worse! I can't move on!
Anybody have any advice? I am totally stuck.
EDIT: Got it! At that stage I put the phone in landscape to avoid the dead area. Then the Android tutorial came out and I couldn't get out of it to go to settings and enable USB debugging mode. So I went to the lockscreen, after 20 tries got Google now pulled up, and was able to type in settings to open it up and enable USB debugging mode. Finally got the bootloader locked. Should I be good to send it back to Google now?
Please repeat this bug while holding the phone in your hand, a video would be nice.

Sure! This is a well-known issue across a LOT of Android phones, YT is awash of vids like yours, all sitting flat on a surface.

Odd it's so zone-specific... I'd suspect the grounding short is right near that lower micro-USB area. Thank Gawgle for quick RMA supply!

I hava the same issue
I have same issue in the same area of display, but my is sporadic, it's not present all the time. It comes and goes. I removed front protector, issue was still present. Then I removed back protector and did a factory reset, and now it's gone for 5 days. It's bought in Canada, and I'm from Serbia so it's a little tricky for me to send it for RMA because now I am not sure if the issue is realy hardware type. I run it in safe mode and it behave same.
Sometimes if goes totaly crazy with tens of simoultanous touches around non working stripe. Lock unlock and it's gone.
Tafak?!?? Don't know what to do...

Screen broken, need help wiping.

Hey guys/gals,
Dropped my phone yesterday and now the screen is completely gone. I was able to back everything up. I had planned on wiping it this morning, but apparently it had some mad LCD bleed and I can't see anything any more.
I had Vysor running yesterday (control your phone from Chrome browser), but now it seems to not be working (I didn't change any settings). I had USB debugging enabled...at least I thought.
I suppose I could just put it into Download Mode/Recovery, I come from 4 years of Samsung devices, so I was using Odin before.
Any chance someone could throw up some screen shots for any screens I'd have to interact with...driving blind.
Thanks
P.S. I did do an "erase" from Android Device Manager. It does say that I would see the Android Welcome Screen next time I turn the device on...haha, except I won't either way
I suppose I'll know if it is erased if the fingerprint reader stops giving me haptic feedback and turning on the device (can see a slight image on the bottom right).
Just boot into download mode, then use ADB to flash the factory image. It will tell you if it works or not.
Thanks Geoff, got that done.

what are u doing to get ur screen fixed?
My work will fix the screen for $170
Have the replacement plan, $80 for a brand new phone. Typing from it
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Hey sorry for the necro but cant seem to get any help on this. If you cant see ANYTHING on the screen, how do you know what mode you are in after you boot to recovery? It seems the default options are always different so how do you ensure you are at the right option to use ADB or anything else? I need to make 100% sure the phone is wiped before I sell it.

just use android device manager and wipe it but you will probably need to tell buyer your account and password after they fix it to get in it then change your password again https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiwzPL1-tjXAhVDPN8KHab3CCAQFggoMAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fandroid%2Ffind&usg=AOvVaw18MrvVnXQpTGzGjml46v_F

I been trying ADM and it is not detecting my phone... I am pretty sure I am logged into my phone but again its hard to be 100% sure. Doesnt your phone have to be on and logged in for this to work? Or does your old sim card have to be in for it to work? I already put my sim card into the new phone, but dont wanna screw up my account or "new" phone by messing around with the sim. I've read somewhere else that it worked without it.

No the phone does not need to be on just still connected to your account and the next time it turns on it will wipe it self and ask for the Google account to unlock it it will be in factory
Reset protect mode
If it's not showing up under your account its not on that account unused phone stay there for like 6 months to a year before disappearing

Ok I think we are missing some info here....
I already got a new 6P and put my SIM card in that
In the Google options to wipe it shows the phone in 2 different names, I think one is my very old Samsung S4, but the 6P
When I clock on the old 6P, it tries to find it but results "Can't Reach Device"
When I click on ERASE it results in:
"ERASE Your device has been erased If your device is offline, erasing will begin when it next comes online. You'll need to sign in to your Google Account to use the device again."
Now that sounds great, but since I cannot see anything, how do I know whats going on as far as if it did it, will it be safe for me to sell this phone now, etc, etc.... I cannot login to a phone I cant see or check out whats going on on it.
I hope this makes sense... maybe I am sounding paranoid but I am sure you know how it is if you have any valuable or personal data in your phone and are selling it.
Thanks so much.
