[INFO] Anandtech Review - Eee Pad Transformer General

Probably the most in-depth review of the Asus Transformer yet! There is, however, the slight error Anand makes when he says that the Transformer does NOT include integrated GPS, while all sources thus far states that it does, including Asus' own page on the product

Thanks for the link! That is a very thorough review.

Andriod Central has a decent review up also.

Hot damn cant wait

Wow, that's such a great review, Anandtech's are always so thorough and beautifully shot. I also think it was a really fair review as well, goes into a lot of depth about the plus points but also makes it clear what the issues are (mainly related to Honeycomb rather than the device itself).

Agreed, fantastic review! Definitely worth a read through.

So the dock will be compatible with future tablet versions? Yes, please. First time I had seen that.

Very good review, you can always trust anandtech to approach reviews with essentially no bias. I also like how they always find out extra information for us - like the dock will ship with new firmware and has a battery life improving update in the works as well as updates for the tablet next month and honeycomb updates from google as well.

Are we sure that the US version will ship with GPS? I can't believe Anandtech would do a review as thorough as this and slip up with a major feature. The US Asus site (usa.asus.com) doesn't even list the Transformer yet.
I hope it has GPS, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was removed to get the price sub-$400.

Fantastic review, just blew Engadgets right out of the water. Holy crap it was thorough.

Amazing review, I was already planning on getting one, but this review convinced me it is worth my time. ASUS is supporting it with firmware updates right out of the gate, and any negatives are software related, which ASUS can fix, or XDA dev's might solve on their own for us. The more I see the dock, the more I want it. I've never been much of a laptop user, preferring my tablet or phones for on the go use, and this is a worthy replacement to my heavily modded Nook Color.

I agree, those extra bits of information was wonderful, but they said NO GPS on the last page...! That is a deal breaker for me...I hope it isn't true....

just got this reply from the anandtech article:
I just confirmed with ASUS, the US version does have GPS hardware. Maps seems to require an active WiFi connection to use GPS however, which is why I originally assumed it wasn't present. My mistake, I've corrected the review
Take care,
Anand

Yay! So any good offline map programs since Google Maps needs wifi? We're going to Switzerland and Italy later this year, would love to have the Transformer lead us around.

I remember another review mentioned that as long as you set up your route with google maps with wifi, you could then leave wifi and still be able to use it with the map already loaded.

Eh there's info on this forum and on the Anandtech review, an asus rep said they were putting out bug fixes, probably a new dock firmware, changes to android and kernel, changes to myLibrary app, and they said generic tweaks as well.
Ahhh the under-used search function. Rest in peace my dear departed friend, under your mountain of dust.
Next he will want Asustek to announce the exact date they will release the Tegra 9 tablet.
Ah, y'all are being too hard on the guy...
Asus DID sell a dock that more than half of recipients can't even use and haven't made an official statement, let alone provided a date for the fix.
Sure, it's nice they're on the forum but frankly the dock shouldn't have even shipped in the state it's in.
They also released the tablets with varying firmware (including 2.2!), the wrong firmware for certain areas causing Transformers to brick, light bleed problems, dust under the screen issues, creaking issues...
And that was for the people who could find one!
And then they posted on Facebook how much we loved them.
Not a stellar launch!
(P.S. I do like my Transformer. But I want my damn dock fixed ASAP! )

Uh, they did release info about the dock update, but I guess you as well are plagued by the inability to use the search function or google. They have given a timeframe for a new dock firmware, also if you bought the dock thinking there wouldn't be issues, maybe you should have read a review first. Personally I'd rather have a buggy dock than no dock so witholding them completely doesn't really do you any good since then you wouldn't have a dock at all.
The bricking update yeah, they dun goofd on that. But they did give the people affected speedy RMA's and kept in contact with them, even on a seperate forum unaffiliated with Asus.
Really, show me an official link? I've read unofficial postings, but nothing firm.
Also, yeah, sorry that I assumed that Asus wouldn't ship something so broken. I mean, heaven forbid I'd want to USE what I paid for.....

Reading reviews before you buy is difficult I heard. I guess it is if you can't use google like just about 60% of the users on this forum. It was your decision to buy it, and your fault for disregarding the warnings in reviews. No one forced you.
Uh, the reviews I read said that Asus would have the issues sorted out before it was released.
And I guess it's okay with you that it was shipped with this many problems?
You're always sticking up for Asus like everything is perfect. Is that your job? Maybe you should go back to work before your manager at Asus catches you surfing.
I mean, I love my tablet. Just in no way shape or form was this launch done well. And I haven't seen a product shipped as broken as the dock in a long time... It's UNUSABLE right now for many people. (More than HALF if our little poll is accurate.)
I understand where people are coming from with their dissatisfaction. Asus should have NOT SOLD the docks until the issues were fixed, or they had a DAY ONE patch ready.
P.S. Where's that official link?

I don't stick up for Asus about nearly everything, the tablet has designflaws which causes issues for some users which is bad. Some build quality issues, their regular tech support is ****, their advertising is bar none, their update bricked devices.
And I didn't read any review that stated the dock would launch without issues or that Asus had said it would launch without issues. Then again I read a lot of reviews since I get my hands on a lot of tech so I generally know which reviews are accurate.
Also shipping with problems is better to me than not shipping at all. Look at the viewsonic g tab, it launched with a **** stock OS which is unusable and still is. LG has unusable software on 2 of their devices. iPads come with light bleed and wifi issues, Xoom comes without a functioning microSD slot, with a lot of products there are problems at launch, but the important problems are the ones that can't get fixed through software. The fact is if you had read a credible review you would have known the dock was buggy but would get an update in the following weeks of the release.
Also a confirmed Asus rep making a statement is generally enough since Asus reps have generally been pretty forward about updates. Anand also stated an update would be on it's way. But I guess using a search is difficult
Thanks for the well thought out response! And I do use the search...
I just don't count anything on this forum as official.. I consider official as on Asus' pages, or an official press release by them, etc.
Anyway, it's a great piece of hardware for the price! I hope they get everything sorted out quickly. I'd really like to be able to use my dock.
You guys are complaining about the dock while many of us don't even have a chance of touching it!!!
I would rather have it now and wait for the incoming update.
I think Microsoft should now tell us when we can expect a updated skype with video calling ability. How irresponsible of them. right, eh, OP???

Own Asus TF Getting Iconia A500

I've had the Asus Transformer since it was released and got the keyboard as well once it was available. I never really liked the way the Transformer looked with the bezel, and really found the extra keyboard kind of pointless. Anyways, yesterday I went to my local Staples and checked out the Iconia A500 and here are my thoughts, the build quality on the Acer is actually better than the Asus, I didn't care which one weighted more but screen quality was very important to me, luckily, the store had a Transformer on display as well and after some comparing I found the screens to really be on par and viewing angles/colours are just as good to the naked eye on the Acer as it is on the Asus. Overall though I thought the Acer Iconia A500 is a better choice than the Transformer if like me, you don't care for the keyboard. Aesthetically I like the way the Acer looks better and also feel that the build quality is a bit better with the Acer. So I ordered one from Staples and will be selling my Asus Transformer + Dock.
I'm just worried at the frequency of updates from Acer as I've owned other Acer products before and they are not the best when it comes to Support, as well it seems that development for the Transformer is moving a long faster than for the Iconia.

acer is at the top of the list, because the list is in alphabetical order. not because they have any preferential treatment or are more "in with google" than any other member of the OHA
true, that technically is for "cell phones" but thats all android was originally for.

I didn't really look at the blacks I was more comparing viewing angles and colour reproduction and like I said, I can't see much of a difference between the two tablets. To be honest I didn't really care much for how real the blacks are as this was mainly a gaming/surfing tablet and wont be used to watch a lot of movies, I much rather enjoy watching movies on my 60" TV. Build quality wise the transformer just felt so cheap after holding the Iconia, I also really don't like the power button on my Transformer cause sometimes it takes me a couple presses for it to be recognized, while the power button on the Iconia feels a lot more precise and feels like it will last. Basicly just small annoyances with the Asus, and since the hardware is almost identical as well as software, I really think it comes down to if you need the dock or not, if you don't then by all means go for the Acer, I also got the Acer for a very nice price as well $429.99 for the 32GB version so that was a major plus.
Thanks for your comparison. How did you get the 32GB version at that price? That is a great price.

That's sort of an apples vs. oranges comparison.
Both are Google partners, but this has nothing to do with how frequently they get updates. The oha is an alliance of Google partners which simply means they officially get Googles android 'code', open or not and Android is built with these companies devices/components/drivers built in.
Those NOT in the alliance must wait on public code (example, viewsonic, etc.).
Regarding updates, recently, Google is encouraging an 18 month update pledge which from what I've read isn't 100% clear, not to me anyway. The pledge seems to be more focussed on handsets, not tablets per se, and really is just a 'best practices' scenario which they are trying to push throughout the collective that is the oha, and while the oha does include tablet makers Acer, Asus, Dell, Toshiba, Samsung, etc. it doesn't mean it applies to tablets since they all do/will also make handsets. Assuming Google DOES intend for it to apply to tablets, that still doesn't guarantee a thing because getting different partners to follow any kind of a timeline just isn't feasible, not even if perks are on the menu.
We can only hope that each company sees fit to adhere to a best practices scenario, spurred maybe by customer 'preference' for/toward those companies who do issue updates on a more frequent and timely basis. For example, the whole Samsung debacle where the carrier Galaxy S phones weren't updating until months after promised caused fallout with many customers - then what happened? Samsung now seems to be the first to update their phones with new firmware, even doing it through Kies (vs. the carriers) and in response, seem to be the hot sellers of the Android smartphone market right now with millions sold in weeks. Likewise, Asus and Motorola are showing that they are on the ball with updates, more than likely in order to entice customers to feel 'safe' with investing in their brands.
I don't expect Acer to let us down....not especially since they seem to be in it for the long haul.

Not so sure about that.
Viewsonic say they will be first to market with a 7" Honeycomb tablet, and there is no public Honeycomb source code.

Why is Acer slow releasing 3.1? The Toshiba is looking better every day.

What is the deal with Acer? I have not received an update to address any issue since the purchase. This is quite ridiculous. If there is no release to 3.1 before the end of the month as promised (unless leaked versions are considered releases) I think its time to try a different device, maybe the Toshiba. Or HP Touchpad since Google and the manufactures can't seem to deliver a fully operational product. As a matter of fact I'm frustrated with being a lab rat for Google tablets period, the phones are awsome. Well now that i have released some tension the title of this thread should be changed.

Impatience has never served anyone.
The leaked version clearly isn't a final build, going by a few issues with it; especially on devices in the EU. Ever thought that, just maybe, they're having a few issues localising their mods with the updated codebase of Honeycomb?
Besides which, 3.1 isn't as big a change over 3.0.1 as you might think.
Had Acer and Transformer since day 1. Been very patient.

I guess I would rather have the gps, WiFi, and screen wake issues resloved. Everyone knows you under promise and over deliver. So Acer should say " we will relaease 3.1 in mid to late july" and actually have it pushed out 1st week of July. Therefore beating and meeting customers expectations. If Acer has a fix for their issues then release them. I can understand it may take time to address Honeycomb issues but things like the screen, wifi, and gps should have been addressed. Oh and cell standby should really be a priority.

Though the screen-wake issues should be easy to fix, the gps and wifi issues would probably require mW increases to the radios, which may or may not be possible depending on the chips and if they can be updated via user updated firmware (has Acer even shown these issues as future fixes?).
The N900 had an option to increase the mW of the wifi (did not help much), but is the only device I have seen that had the option in user settings.
I had all the common issues (screen-on, weak wifi and gps), so returned the A500 and will wait for an update that at least fixes the screen-on. Was looking at the Thrive, but am hearing mixed reports about the display (some reports are it is washed out and blurry-like). I am hoping these are minority opinions (or the A500 issues get fixed).

If we're talking about looks, the toshiba is one of the uglyest devices I've seen in my life! Such lack of taste and inspiration for design...
Best to get a developer board with 3.1 if you don't care about aesthetics or ergonomics and can't wait for one more week.
Also the screen bug is no bug. It's something you installed. Restore stock and it's gone.
And what wifi issues? Check your settings.
If I were you I'd be more worried about the manual than a minor update.

I'm wondering if the screen-on bug is caused by a particular app i've installed too. The one that comes to mind is tweetdeck since it's constantly checking for feed updates, but I have no idea if there's anything in it
I for one will wait patiently, or possibly not so patiently(j/k) for Acer to release 3.1. I haven't really had any of the issues with the wifi or the sleep/wake issues at all. My wifi signal is always strong and I think my tablet has rebooted once unexpectedly in the time I've had it. As far as GPS goes, I got an OTA update from Acer about 2 weeks into my ownership that seemed to speed up the GPS fix 100%. Overall I'm very happy with it, but do look forward to resizable widgets.
so take charge
Flash your Iconia with one of the many awesome builds of 3.1 out there and make some changes - or have patience and wait for Acer to do what they do.
Even on 3.0 code base my tablet has been wonderful to me - if it's not working for you then perhaps the a500 is not the device for you.

maybe I will, especially if the the screen wake and cell standby isnt addressed. Just think how much longer the battery would last. I guess what I'm really confused about too is how some people received updates to fix issues, but most didn't? WTF. Updates should be on their website available for download. The tablet is solid and the best as of now, but my gripe is with time it has taken to address issues. Acer is slowly losing traction and needs to improve by showing better support to customers that spent 500 on their device.

for the OEM to fix the issues.
as far as I'm concerned, all the issues that sock 3.0 had were completely insignificant. I've been getting great wifi reception, and the cell was so simple to fix it's not even worth complaining about.
If you want a 100% purified experience, go get an iPad. If you want something that you'll be able to do what you want with (including fix issues), stay with the A500.

On the contrary, swearing IS free speech, possibly the best expression of free speech..
After all, WHO gets to define what is swearing anyway.
I've been in some forums and got banned for saying "hell" when some moron said I should say " H - E - double hockey-sticks".
Is 'bloody' swearing (it probably IS in USA bible-belt towns), "bugger", etc.
Swear words come and go (I was told I was showing my age because I said "sod").
No one has the right to define 'swearing' for someone else, hence it becomes free speech to swear!.

Xoom Gets a Bad Rap?

I've had multiple tabs; Viewsonic, Asus, Acer and now the Xoom. While I'm not rich I can have almost any tab I want and of all the ones I've owned I greatly prefer my wifi Xoom. The screen isn't as good as the Asus but the build quality is excellent and the updates have been great being an Android experience tablet. I knew about the sd card going in but knew it could be fxed with rooting and figured an official update would eventually come. I actually thought the 599 price I paid for it was fair considering the price of other 32gb tabs. While the Asus has the dock, the Xoom has a ton of accessories and frankly I dont need another notebook, in fact that's what I was trying to get away from. So why all the hate for the Xoom? Is it mainly geared toward the 3g version and lack of 4g yet? Is Verizon partly to blame? I just don't see why there's so much disdain for this tablet. Not looking for flamers just point of views.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
I have to say, I'm in the same boat as you...... I just can't understand why some people have such a hate on for this device. I've owned every tab but the 10.1 and I have to say I think the zoom is best all around. It got ports, accessories, and fantastic build quality..... great device here's hoping it gets a little more love in the future
Glad I'm not alone. If I had to buy a tablet over, it would still be this one.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
I agree, I mean, it's not to thin to the point where you think your gonna break it, and it doesn't feel so cheap that it is just gonna fall appart, and it is 100% Android with no extra whatnot.
The one thing that beats out other tablets is that we are basically spoon fed from google. I dont trust ASUS/ACER/Samsung to update their tablets after newer models come out a year later compared to google. Samsung only updates their galaxy S line of phones in a timely matter while my low end intercept is still on 2.2. I'm sure samsung will probably slowdown with updates once the newer models come out. I was considering waiting for the 10.1 but NO I wanted a google experience device.
I Also Had Them All...
and the build quality of the Xoom is far superior to Acer, Asus and even the Samsung. Then too, even though some are ranting about Motorola, my personal experience with Acer and Asus tech service (totally clueless) makes me like the Xoom all the more - hell, Acer can't even get an update out and the build quality of the Asus tab is pathetic.

This is a biggie for me, I don't have to be rooted to get the latest and greatest.

I'm with all of you...I love my Xoom!
The Xoom was released too early, hell, Android 3.0 was released too early.
I did my share of working-around, and bug reporting.
Nonetheless, I love this thing. I really do.
Every update makes it better, too.
It's solid as a brick, has kickass battery life, really good audio output.
(I use it as a Google Music player sometimes)
The Xoom let me detach my media consumption/remote work from my phone: was able to ditch the Droid 2 and get a Nexus S 4g, which is a sexy beast itself.
I use my Xoom way more than my cr-48 netbook (even though it's faster to type on) because the Xoom is actually more responsive and adept at multimedia and work. (That being said the cr48 is better as a browser. Closer to desktop. But flash is better on the Xoom)
I read on the Xoom, watch movies, youtube, play games, connectbot, google docs, set up torrents to download TV shows at home. I absolutely love reading comics on it. (Have over 8GB of comics alone)
It's my go-to Honeycomb development test device. The emulator is too slow to be useful, so my Xoom sits on my desktop in debug mode a lot.
It's so integral to my day that giving it up for Moto to do the LTE upgrade is going to be like giving up a limb.

Same here.
+1
I own the VS GTab, Asus TF and now the Xoom. I agree with earlier posts about the Asus, a true POS. I am on my second one now and it is no better than the first one, maybe worse. My first TF was a B5 build and the B6 build changed the screen color/temperature so the screen isn't as sharp as the B5. That being said, I don't think the screen is any better on the TF now. With all the screen light leaks around the edges, the battery draining on the dock and the poor video playback on Flash 10.3 (6 frames/second) at 720P, the Xoom is definately a better product. The build quality is far superior to the Asus. I think the build quality on my Viewsonic GTab is better than the Asus... I am all about the Xoom now, we'll see what comes out in the future...
I will always love my Xoom, only android Motorola thing i own and i enjoy it. Its just that people that enjoy the Xoom don't come and say how much they love it as appose to the people that find every little problems to whine.
i love my xoom too. but It wans't always that way. I had to void the warentee by flashing a US ROM. problem is motorola customer support outside US is dreadfull. Pity really cos i always wanted a device to rival ipad internationally. this only seems to be the case within the US.
I love my Xoom too. Still waiting on the 3.2 update, but I'm pretty happy with 3.1.
Build quality of Xoom seems good to me, although, I have not used any other tablet. Screen is just fine. Works great as an ebook. And 3G is plenty fast so I'm in no hurry for the LTE upgrade. But I do understand those who are angry about it since it was one of the features that was prominently advertised when it first came out in February.
Agreed my xoom is awesome...I do everything on it...a lot of people never owned or touched one but seem to have a lot of negativity to say about it....I don't think you can judge it unless you used it for a solid month

Agreed, most posts on these forums are about speculation about stuff.
We have nothing hardware/battery life/build quality wise to complain about except maybe the screen.
Mine took effort to make it right (US ROM on UK model), but there is a way to go just yet. Especially the tablet apps section on the market, which seems rather odd to leave out. However, it was money well spent.
I love my Xoom and Honeycomb. I even sleep with it.
I am a little disappointing with Moto's/Google's communication skills.
Love, love, love, my Xoom.
I own the Xoom and yes I do love it as well, (yes it sleeps beside me as well) Hardware wise for me its second to none very well built system, as for updates In the USA you have little to complain as Google is the one that releases the updates, but outside the US its Motorola who releases the updates and they have really made a mess of the communication with updates and so forth, they only released in China and Japan, Australia been pulled due to numerous issues with it, then Google releases 3.2 and most people don’t even have 3.1 yet. Al Motorola has to do is come out say something ,anything, they come out once in Canada and say the release update will be “soon” that was over two months ago, how soon is soon ? To me it sure is allot less than two months, I am sure some people will have issues with the Xoom and that is the nature of business not everything is perfect, but for the most part most complaints are against Motorola and their lack of communication and updates, to me it looks like their house is a mess they don’t know what they are doing , and have ignored their customer base outside of the USA if Samsung, Asus, Acer etc. can release 3.1 why not Motorola, why are they being so quiet what’s going on ? I paid good money for this device, I was told an update will be coming soon, I would like some answers.

Thank you Asus tablet team

I just wanted to say thanks to the Asus tablet team. I had a great support experience with them lately. They are really dedicated to their product and clients.
Thanks also for the 3.2 update. There are a lot of complaints but it fixed a lot of issues for me. I even like the pointer and scrolling on the dock!!!
That is all...

It's good to see someone give positive feedback, not just complain. I am still waiting for the 3.2 update. I hope it solves browser rendering issues and improve overall speed / stability.
I'm going to chime in and agree; this was a good update. I also like the new pointer....I guess to each his own..
My TF is working fast and smooth....with few issues.
Thanks Asus!
Thx Asus. You are much faster than Acer, Motorola Europe
Keep up the good work!
The 3.2 update has definitely made the tablet faster and smoother. Frankly this is the first product in recent memory that has had such an awesome proactive support team. I have had fixes personally sent to me, brand new replacements sent to me at no cost, and regular contact through both emails and PMs here.
love it
I have only had my Transformer couple months and LOVE it.I use my G2x as hot spot and it works perfectly...
thanks
This is a good topic. For all the problems I've had (battery dying on first dock, dock battery drain, etc.) it's easy to forget that the Transformer is the best Android tablet on the market right now and is receiving an unprecedented level of support.
I told myself that i would get the tablet that got updates but i just went for the cheapest. Worked out both ways for me and now my next tablet will be an Asus one as long as they keep the updates coming. I have no problem waiting a few weeks but like here in Canada the Xoom is still 3.0.1, the Acer got 3.1 when 3.2 came out and I wouldn't even look at the optimus pad way to expensive.
I recommend the Transformer to all my friends because it really is the best tablet cheep and updated a lot
Thank you Asus if you are reading this
I totally agree that Asus is doing an excellent job of updating honeycomb to its latest version. That's for me one of the most important rradon to choose transformer vs other andriod tablet brand.

Love the update things run so much smoother. I dont have a dock so the curser isn't an issue. I am upset over no Netflix after they say it will be there but I can wait

Another satisfied customer here. I love the works done by ASUS. I'm very pleased with HC3.2. I even like the new pointer.
Keep up the good job guys!
I too have to say "Thank you ASUS", for a great tablet and fast 3.2 update. Had one small problem with the file explorer, but with a simple work-around I have my
VitalPlayer working again. Also Real Player showed up in Market Place after my update, Or was that just me???? I had just got my dock, so I had no chance to see the difference in pointers. I do wish you could turn off the tap feature on the touch pad, like you can with a mouse. All and all, I love the update.....
I think it's terribly impressive that Asus manages to sell the least expensive tablet, with arguably the best screen (or darn close), great specs, and the most innovative design--and, provide the best support to go along with it. I've yet to own another device that provides as much functionality in so many situations.
Way to go, Asus!
They are doing great thanks asus update is great keep it up

I am not going to complain about the 3.2 update as it did fix some issue & didn't create any new ones. I only wish they would have fix some of thedefaut bowser issues.

My experience with US phone Tech Support has been excellent, quick and efficient.
Over email, though, it's really bad. It took them 3 weeks to reply to my report of an unresponsive screen, and then with one of those "update to 3.2"... which at the time had been withdrawn (my tablet is currently being repaired).
I also have a (very nice) ASUS netbook that goes back 3 years, and my two email requests had a similar fate.
ASUS please release an update for the sound imbalance other wise updates have been great!
